I'm really digging the new player. However, right now my latest posted video is breaking the player. It completed the Flash conversion, but perhaps there is a secondary conversion happening in the background just for the new player? I'm going to try using the new player for my most recent video (i.e. the MN Stories home page). When that video becomes yesterday's video, I'll switch to the old embed method so the correct video plays in the permalink. Yes, it would be nice to specify which video plays first for permalink purposes. Also, there are some videos I don't want popping up in the player - like the Justin.tv sex video. So I just labeled that video as explicit content and it smartly is not included in the player videos. All in all, GREAT job Blip.tv! -chuck http://mnstories.com

Unlike others who are treating user-generated content as advertising, PR or buzz marketing, the Ikea campaign is based on a very old marketing model: consumer promotion. The promotion, which is being hosted and managed by Shycast, any early stage company that is going public today with the Ikea campaign, is essentially a contest that offers $5,000 in cash to the user who creates the best online video on making a bed. Actually, the contest asks consumers to break the rules of bed-making. As of early this morning, moments after the campaign went live, Shycast had three video posts: One from Bill showing a bed making itself; one from Steph, making my bed; and one from Robert J. Moore, asking whether, you can see me in his bed. The hope of Ikea and its agencies is that the campaign will prove to be more than just a test bed, and that it will catch on like wildfire, tapping a new undercurrent of competition in the user-generated video space. How cool is this concept. If you are in the market for an advertising agency you should hire these guys now. I love it. [videoblogging] Re: John Edwards to Run for President (announcement on YouTube)
Yes, more footage coming from NOLA. This day began for the Edwards entourage in the early wee hours, in the devastated 9th ward of New Orleans. From there it was on to Des Moines Iowa for a town hall meeting and blogger meetup, and now I'm in New Hampshire about to crash after a totally surreal day that feels like 3 days. (3 awesome days!) The announcement was your typical press event, my camera had nothing unique to offer. So I interviewed Scoble on how he got involved and what he thought of the whole thing and the process. I interviewed a vlogger from North Carolina who was invited by the Edwards folks and was very excited to be there. Lastly I found some church volunteers down the block from all the Edwards hoopla, where the real work was going on -- they were gutting a house of all it's moldy exoskeleton. They were working like mad ripping it up, finding some remnants of the owner (beads, a moldy bible). The guy giving me the tour was a big Rocketboom fan which I did not expect! For what it's worth I'm convinced Edwards is a passionate, smart, authentic person who would make a great president. He has some people on his team I interviewed 3 years ago -- the people who made the Dean campaign legendary for its use of technology to engage and make the campaign people powered. But now, it's evolved to include video and frankly there's a better candidate. cheers, chuck I've got a few bad phonecam photos and thoughts on my flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/blogumentary/ --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, T Shey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: What was it like for you all to visit New Orleans? The Internet TV Conference Expo 2007 is the first event of it's kind, to be held at NYC's Roosevelt Hotel on June 25/26 2007. http://www.itvcon.com/ Holy hyperbole! There's a lot of stuff there that makes me cringe, but I've had experience with this one: Turn your editors and writers into television celebrities. How to include Internet television content to magazine, newspaper, and online media Websites. Traditional media Websites without video content will be obsolete overnight. It's true that online video is big in the magazine world, and it makes sense. I've made some cool videos for a magazine trying to make their editors into web personalities. Suffice to say, just because you're a good print editor doesn't mean you can be engaging in front of a camera. In fact the biggest mistake this particular magazine made at the outset was in trying to be... television. They finally realized that trying to look like TV was (a) way too expensive, and (b) ended up looking like bad television.
[videoblogging] Re: Are You Recommending HD Cameras Yet?
Give it up for content y'al! I certainly lust after an HD television. Our friend has a sweet 42 Panasonic and we're always in awe of the HD experience. So... what does that have to do with videoblogging? Not a whole lot today, not something most vloggers need to worry about. But tomorrow is coming quick. Rocketboom has their stuff in HD. I shoot on a Sony HC1 which is small and not very expensive. However I hardly ever edit in HD - I basically think of it as a really good SD camera with sharp detail. But I've got that footage in HD should I have an opportunity to show a video on TV, or in a theater, or online. Strangely enough, I'm considering ditching the HC1 for a Panasonic DVX. I just love the 24p look, and the gamme curves (or whatever) that just look fantastic. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Andreas Haugstrup Pedersen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: 1) Shoot using the cheapest camera you can find. 2) Embrace compression artifacts. 3) Rejoice, send me a link and spend the money you save on things that actually matter (hint: it's not a green screen). - Andreas Den 18.12.2006 kl. 01:58 skrev Joshua Paul [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Not completely on topic, but not off either. [videoblogging] Re: RSS as Relationship Tool
Here's my edited response to all this from 3vilvlog: We make money, you make money. Is that in an agreement someplace? That should be front and center. Everyone wants our content these days, and everyone wants it for free so they can make money off of it and we get squat. So skepticism is a natural first response. Here's a question I don't know the answer to: How does TV Guide work? Who pays whom? Obviously a TV show or channel would be foolish to not be included in a tv guide or online program guides. And obviously, in the case of TV Guide, they make money off of that. In return, they bring an audience. It's a tradeoff. Same thing is happening right now in online video. Networks and guides are popping up. At the outset we'll have a lot of them. Blip is trying to be that for their own content, same with Revver, same with MySpace. Mefeedia has always been a guide for vlogging, but I think they're lacking in resources and interface. (But I still love you!) I think Network2 can be a good, useful guide to online shows/vlogs/etc and I personally *want* the stuff I produce to be linked and seen by more people. And yes, if they make money, I want to make money. Something that's never really been resolved: By the act of publishing with RSS aren't we allowing this kind of usage? Aren't we saying, spread my content?
[videoblogging] Re: RSS as Relationship Tool
I'd be curious to hear why you think it's a bad idea? Vlog networks are inevitable. PodTech is a podcast network of sorts. There are a lot of people making shows that want to do that for a living. Many of them spend all of their time making great content, but have no time or perhaps expertise in business or infrastructure or promotion. There are a lot of potential advantages for those folks to band together, or otherwise be part of a larger network that can do all of that for them and probably bring a bigger audience, too. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Steve Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Okay I soon foudn this on businessweek: http://www.businessweek.com/the_thread/techbeat/archives/2006/10/ network2tv_vona.html Oh how I am reassured, not... [videoblogging] Re: OOoh, Amanda's Up!
I'm sure the amount of money being spend on a weekly vlog show might be shocking. But consider... 1) ABC needs to jump into online video and get an audience there. That's where the audience is going, so they need to learn and learn fast. Hiring someone of Amanda's stature is a high-profile way to do that. The costs of *not* getting involved and *not* learning how to earn an online audience probably far outweighs whatever they're spending. Survivial. 2) I'm personally glad it's a weekly show. I don't watch Rocketboom or any daily show every day. No time. Other people obviously do, but I tend to get my fresh links from TailRank, BoingBoing, etc. because it's less demanding of my attention and non-linear. If you found anny of that vaguely interesting, I posted more on my blog, which peaked in 2004: http://tinyurl.com/yhdaa5 --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, andrew michael baron [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On the topic of ABC's videoblog, I'm going to set aside all of the technical problems everyone has already mentioned with the video distribution and the ABC platform - the fact that there are no RSS feeds, the comments are pre-approved and filtered (even when not offensive), the video scrolls have been turned off, one is forced to view long, irrelevant pre-roll ads that outlast many people's curiosity and especially the closed platform with no mobile or local potential. In otherwords, the only difference between this video platform and one from say, 1997, is that for this one, at least the video does come on and plays. Maybe they can hire someone who knows a thing or two about it. I'm going to suggest that the greatest failure of this project however has to do with the severely expensive resources that are being used for a product that can be much more valuable for a mere fraction of the effort and costs. My question is, how much money did it take to produce this? Also, if all of the effort only goes into a once-a-week show, how effective and interested are the people behind the show to take so much time and money to do so little? For instance, we know they are probably paying Amanda a professional salary. They are also paying two senior level producers for this. Then there is at least one editor, a camera person (unless one of the producers is a cameraman), lighting tech, audio guy, all with premium 'ABC' salaries. I am just speculating, perhaps I have missed some. In addition to that, the entity ABC needs to make revenue (beside the people), yet they also have at least one rep that works with Amanda besides the producers and other production staff. Surely they have someone who works on the website if not a section of a team. Amanda's agent needs a professional share. Amanda's manager too. They obviously have a very aggressive PR team too (which they will definitely need to drive people to the show). Lets not forget the advertisers! They are the ones supporting this and because so many people need to get paid such high salaries, the advertisers need to get paid most of the real-estate of the website. In many ways, this scenario is typical of one where the advertisers are way more important than the show itself. The show is just a tool for ad sales in the end, after all. The point I want to make is, there are probably WAY too many people needed to pull off this one 5 minute production exclusively for a small flash file on one website. A company like ABC should perhaps use their expensive resources to produce content that needs expensive resources. Was there special access gained? Was there need for expensive equipment? Travel expenses? 3 producers? No, there was no sign of any need for any of the above that I could see.

[videoblogging] Re: vlog
Uh-oh... do I have to remove you from the list of MN Vlogs now?? Nooo! I've always been a proponent of the simplest, content-agnostic definition of vlog: Video on a blog. A videoblog. David, you're putting video on a blog so I'd say you fit the classic definition. It gets a little blurry with YouTube and video podcasting. * YouTube calls its users broadcasters and says it started as a personal video sharing service. Nevertheless, it has blog-like features. People can post videos over time and have a blog of sorts. Others can subscribe to your videos, though it is a closed system. * Video podcasting, videocasting, what have you - these activities don't necessarily rely on a blog or even a web site. Content creators can make video for their subscribers on iTunes, Akimbo, Democracy, maybe TiVo. These are all manifestations of a revolution in online video distribution. It's very exciting. And I'm sort of in the who cares what you call it camp. I think vlog/videoblog have taken hold because the early adopters and proponents used that term. It also happens to be easier to say and make into a verb than the myriad alternatives. I tend to think of myself as a filmmaker who chooses to distribute my work in a vlog. Again, content-agnostic. However there's no doubt the word vlog has some style connotations. Vlog-style -- holding the camera with one hand pointed at yourself, talking to the camera, very spontaneous and not over-produced. That's pretty brilliant! I've been waiting for this for a long time. The only problem is, it seems like they're treating it like a text ad rather than something that's inserted before/after a video. I'd rather have the option of a real video ad that's part of the video experience, rather than marrying it to a static web page. I'd love to go knock on doors and find good, preferably local, advertisers for video ads. But I barely have enough time to keep on top of my content, let alone drum up any income. That's what's so great about Google Ads - it does the matching for you with little effort on your part. Of course the results are sometimes random and obviously disassociated from my vlog except for a few keywords. My ideal video ad, which I may have mentioned before, is connected to my vlog in a more meaningful way. First of all, it's a product or service I genuinely like and use. Second, I'd want to talk to the people behind it and create a short documentary ad. That approach is far more valuable and useful to me, my audience, and the advertiser. According to Adobe/Macromedia, based upon a survey by NPD: http://tinyurl.com/zzftm Flash 5: 97.7% Flash 6: 97.2% Flash 7: 94.8% Flash 8: 69.3% That's for the U.S. as of April 2006. Percentages are higher in Europe. I'm still using Flash 6 for MInnesota Stories, primarily because of the high installed user base. I'm very tempted to upgrade to Flash 8 video but I don't want to lose anybody or force an upgrade -- and it looks pretty decent. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Charles Iliya Krempeaux [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello, I thought Flash only had about 90% saturation (not 98%). [videoblogging] Re: Voxmedia wiki: Flash video
I'm having a hard time finding hard numbers. Here's an article in Publish magazine putting Quicktime at 59% and Windows at 50%. http://www.publish.com/article2/0,1895,1780061,00.asp I don't think there's any question Flash has a bigger installed user base than any other video format. That's why YouTube, video ads, etc. are using it. That's why, after many thousands of visits, I've never had a single person say your video won't load unless I did something wrong. :-) That said, there are still pros and cons, and I completely agree that embedding Flash while offering a Quicktime feed is an excellent choice. That's what I do. Here's a good article discussing Pros and Cons of Flash video. It's generally more difficult for a novice to create Flash video, though services like Blip and YouTube perhaps make that a non-issue: http://www.publish.com/article2/0,1895,1780061,00.asp cheers, chuck mnstories.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, LeanBackVids.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Before we continue to debate the various versions of Flash, can someone post hard numbers for the penetration rate of Quicktime and Windows Media? My bet is that both are less than Flash... and there is no doubt a downside to each. Seems like the best option would be to output both Flash and QT. You can use the Flash by default on your blog, but also offer a QT link if they do not have Flash. Better yet, set a cookie for their preference. Then of course offer a QT feed for iTunes/iPod. As for the wiki's accuracy, lets just add a link to the Flash penetration page. [videoblogging] Voxmedia wiki: Flash video
For anyone who cares, I edited the Voxmedia wiki entry about Flash video. It was extremely biased against Flash IMO: >From this: * ''Flash delivery of media''. While we love Flash for lots of reasons, the downside is that Flash makes it nearly impossible for folks to quote / mashup or otherwise use your work for their own nefarious artistic purposes. If you don't care about nefarious artistic purposes as defined by the [http://creativecommons.org/ Creative Commons], then Flash is great. It will prevent folks from downloading and distributing your work, just like RealPlayer. To this: * ''Flash delivery of media''. We love Flash for lots of reasons, mainly because it's installed on 98% of browsers. The downside is that Flash makes it difficult for folks to quote / mashup or otherwise use your work for their own nefarious artistic purposes. [videoblogging] Copyright radical
Check out this just-posted interview with Negativland's Mark Hosler: http://tinyurl.com/fkfrd He says You don't get total control when you put a creative work out into the world. If you want total control, keep it in your bedroom. I tend to agree. That's not to say you shouldn't get paid for your creative work. But if you put something out into the public consciousness, you've already surrendered how that work will be perceived, contextualized, and interpreted. Or even mentally remixed, you might say. Our lives are mashups. The whole fucking world is a mashup. For this reason I'm increasingly against the No Derivatives clause of Creative Commons licenses. Let me give you an example. I was recently depressed about staying up all night doing web production for my job. A piece of art by Hugh Macleod *almost* represented how I felt. It was a purple scribble that said We can't go on like this. I made it red and changed it to say I can't go on like this and posted it on my blog: http://tinyurl.com/l6mx9 While Hugh kindly says I can do whatever I want with his art for personal use, his CC license says No derivatives. Those conflict. That license says I can look at his work, and remix it in my head, and create a personalized version of it, but I can't show anybody. I can't recreate or regurgitate my experience of Hugh's art - according to that CC license. Well, I say I can and I do. This is particularly true in the digital age. Hugh is not losing anything (especially monetarily) by my personal remix of his art. You can say the same of using commercial music and images in your videos. If you're not trying to redistribute or profit from another's copyrighted work, why NOT include it in your creative palette? The world around us is our creative palette. We have the right to express the world around us, as artists and human beings. (END RANT) SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Use Explains YAHOO! Great thoughts. FYI, I'm interviewing Jon Rawlinson about the Nata Village blog/vlog project this weekend. Hopefully for Rocketboom, or Human Wire. Or MN Stories, or anywhere really. :-) Minnesota Stories sometimes dents molehills. Definitely approaching things form the hyperlocal level, equally important as the global. My goal is for it to be a place for otherwise unheard voices. Most of the time it's just entertaining stuff around town, but it's going in interesting directions. One project I'm excited about is Citizens for Election Integrity. Minnesota is going to audit elections to ensure accuracy in every county through this nonpartisan organization. I'm going to set up a vlog for them to get the word out and recruit volunteers. I anticipate this will be the primary way people learn about this issue and how they can help. [videoblogging] Re: HDD for Video Blogging?
Please note that HDD and HDV are not the same. The original question is about HDD cameras - Hard Disk Drive, i.e. tapeless cameras. Sony just announced a new $1000 HDD camera which competes with JVC's Everio line. This is quite handy because you just copy files instead of capturing from tape. These cameras is *not* high definition, however. HDV refers to High Definition Video on miniDV tapes. I also have one of Sony's HDV cameras, the HC1. The Darknets panel was a good and touched on some of the copyright issues. Personally, I think a system where something like The Grey Album is illegal, doesn't work. Now the MPAA (they had a representative on the panel) and the RIAA still look at this as theft. As long as that's the case, things are not going to change. And they certainly won't listen to me as an individual on the issue. But if people in aggregate willfully disregard these laws where they're just plain stupid, I think, they'll be forced to come up with some sort of solution. Just as background - I come at this as an artist who very much respects people's right to get paid for their work and on the other hand I also believe that by contributing to and participating in culture (popular and otherwise) you give up total control over your work. A few years ago I made a short film about my brother and I playing Star Trek as kids (here's the link all you fellow Star Trek nerds: http://www.michaelverdi.com/video/mjplaystartrek.mov). I wrote to Paramount asking for the right to use the tricorder and transporter sounds. What I got back from them was a letter explaining how I could not use (with no option to license for a fee) those sounds along with the words Spock, Enterprise or Phaser. I just think that's complete bullshit. We didn't play Star Voyages as kids or run around with Quadcorders or something. It was Star Trek. Those are my memories and this film is my way of remembering. I don't really give a shit if you've trademarked that stuff - it's part of the culture and they've benefited from that by both ripping lots of others off in the ideas behind it and in the billions of dollars they've made because of it. -Verdi Yahoo! It's absolutely a good idea to make your own music, or find/buy royalty-free podsafe music. If you do anything else, you're taking a risk. But also keep in mind, the boundaries of Fair Use have not been fully tested in court. I sometimes choose to take the risk on my non-commercial personal vlog, crediting the artist, rather than inhibit my creativity. No cease-and-desists, so far. The perfect example of a potentially legitimate use of copyrighted music is Zadi's When September Ends video, which was written about in the NY Times Critic's Notebook: http://smashface.com/vlog/20050924nytimes.html Then of course there's my Welcome to the Future video which deals with this whole clash between copyright and our desire to capture, share, remix: http://blogumentary.typepad.com/vlog/2005/03/videoblog_week__2.html Keep in mind Zadi and I could hear from record company lawyers. Maybe we could get the EFF to defend, but more likely it's easier to simply remove the video. [videoblogging] Re: Pricing Media (difficult question)
There's definitely value in the archives, and in genres of information. Now that I have a good library of Minnesota Stories videos, all categorized, I'm going to make those categories prominent. It's something we take for granted on text blogs, but I think if you call it something other than Archives by Category (yawn) -- more like Videos by Category, people will want to explore. That opens up an opportunity for sponsorship by type of content. Obviously this doesn't apply to most vlogs, but my content is all over the map. A local club might want to sponsor the music genre of videos, for example. It's basically the PBS model, where you see Science programming on WGBH is brought to you by 3M. I've actually got an opportunity brewing along these lines, for architecture/ urban development. It was triggered by a video I made about an old mill building being renovated into riverfront condos in downtown Minneapolis. The real estate community really latched on to this and saw the power of video, and how it could benefit them. Where it gets tricky is they want me to make a series of videos about a new condo development.. follow the citizen meetings, the building, etc. I'm interested in that kind of long-term video project, and having access. But there's the huge question of editorial integrity and editorial control. Sponsorship and content are ideally completely separate, though you see it blurring all the time. It's something I'm struggling with... I think maintaining editorial control is of utmost important if it's going to be on my vlog, instead of a straight-up corporate video they put on their site. It also has much more value to them being on my vlog, much more integrity and reach. Just as it would if a news station followed a condo development, that has a lot of influence. Anyway, the only way I can imagine doing it is if they sponsor that *type* of vlog programming, which would include following the condo development but also anything else related to architecture, housing issues, and so on. (any thoughts??) I also have no idea how to price something like this. -chuck http://mnstories.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Caution Zero [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- Enric [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: If the ad was generic enough it may have longer pertinence. But just slapping video on a static web site is most certainly NOT a videoblog. By that reasoning, almost every web page would be a blog because it has text. You at least need dated entries of some sort to be a blog format. That's what it *is*. Dated entries in reverse chronological order. Comments and RSS feeds are nice, but those are all bells and whistles. You don't have do enable conversation or offer alternative distribution of your content, but it's nice. :-) --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, missbhavens1969 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Jebus--are we really going to do this again? As soon as our $15/month account couldn't hold us any more, we were at the point where we could have started putting up ads, accepting sponsorships, just generally bringing in money to support server costs. We didn't do this, because we wanted to do things in a very specific way, a way that Andrew had saved up for years to make happen. Your claims about Andrew's trust fund and his top-tier contacts from elite schools are almost as bizarre as your earlier claim in a previous message to this group that you knew what our mission was. For the record, we spend $0 on promotion-- unless time spent producing our videos equals time spent promoting? And time, of course, equals money? I can see that, but I think our about page is much more literal. We don't spend money on advertising or a PR person, that's what that statement on our site is all about. The fact is, we have never sent out a single e-mail promoting our site, aside from ones to this list. We spend our time making videos. As for server costs, the beauty of having a big site is that servers want to host you for discounted rates or even for free. Are you now claiming to know about our relationship with our server? If you want to talk hits, we get over half a million of those per day. Yeah, just posting the clip is shaky ground. At this point it's out there, so even if one of us got a cease-and-desist it would be pointless. Hopefully the network execs are smart enough to realize this is good buzz for them. (Err, not that I'm going to start watching CSI or anything...) Also - good perspective as usual Verdi. I remember how you Dylan were excited and in the moment being on national news, but also talked about what that means and how fleeting it really is in the larger scheme of things. This is definitely a milestone of some sort. Historic seems pretty hyperbolic. Who was the first blogger to get a book deal from their blog? I sure don't remember. I think whether you're a writer, or an actor, or a filmmaker, it's exciting to have your work out there in any form. Good stories are good stories. The videos I make can and do end up on a web page, on an iPod, on a Tivo, sometimes on a big theater screen. [videoblogging] Re: Rocketboom to Auction Advertising Time on Ebay?
David! You have Google ads on your site, as does Minnesota Stories, where you've been kind enough to lend your video. So you must tolerate some degree of ads. Maybe Google ads are unobtrusive and/or you can easily ignore them. Wouldn't the same be true of a video ad, potentially? Esp. after the real content? It's fine to draw the line someplace, but I'm just pointing out you must not be 100% against advertising on vlogs. Minnesota Stories will surely have a video ad someday (please...) preferably something not evil. Not only to offset the growing costs of my growing audience, but because I'd sure like to do Minnesota Stories for a living if it's possible. It has so much potential, but I don't have the time or resources to give it all the care and feeding it needs to really blossom. Anyway, I hope you don't boycott the site when that happens. Heck, if you want to make a quirky 15 sec promo for your own vlog, I'll run it for a day as an experiment. That's definitely a not evil ad, of sorts. Let's imagine and try different ideas. There really aren't a whole lot of options for sustaining a vlog with a bigger audience, esp. if you want to devote all your time to it. Rocketboom is trying two of the main ones, advertising and subscription. The way they're going about advertising is very creative and innovative, I'd say. It's surprising it's taken them this long, given their massive audience and growing costs, to bring in some money. [videoblogging] Re: Rocketboom/Ebay/Vlogs=love
I sure don't speak for Chasing Windmills, but I do know they're *very* interested in learning how they can keep creating their episodic vlog with some sort of financial support. Just as I am for Minnesota Stories. Look... nobody is independently making big bucks from videoblogging, if any bucks at all. I don't think anyone has video ads, do they? But that doesn't mean nobody WANTS to make any money, or have any video ads, or explore other avenues for sustaining and cultivating their vlog. It's not that we're all a bunch of purists. Many of us are looking to folks like Rocketboom (or anybody, really) to say Hey - the water's safe! Here's a business model, come on in! We'll probably see the models emerge this year, from whomever is willing to get their feet wet. Here's another statement I want to make: ARTISTS SHOULD MAKE MONEY. I don't think there's all that much controversy about vloggers making money. Even the most outspoken DIY-spirited vloggers want to make money. Whether it's a book deal, Google ads, grants, subscriptions -- there are lots of options. And that's *good*! As I've mentioned elsewhere, the important thing is that your vlog comes from love. If you're starting a vlog with dollar signs in your eyes, (a) you're deluded, (b) it will be transparent and sadly obvious. Start it because you love it. The good news is, the love you pour into your vlog may well attract money in time. I think it's good karma. If you pour yourself into it and love it, it will show. Your audience will know it, and maybe tell others. You've got love value. Bask in that creative exchange, knowing that's why you do it. Or quit your dayjob and take a shot at doing what you love for a living. Different strokes... I have spoken. :-) -chuck --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, David Howell [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: http://chasingmills.blogspot.com/ -- they do it. Sure. A paycheck from my hobby would be nice. I have the Sony HC1, and for my Quicktime feed I'm using 400 x 225. Weird I know, but looks pretty good and should handle being blow up bigger. Sorenson Squeeze has a deinterlace, which isn't really necessary if you're shrinking your video. I'm not sure how much processing time it adds but I'd like to experiment with a larger format feed. Warning - do not step into the ring with Matt Clayfield on matters of the cinema. You will get served. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Matthew Clayfield [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Enric [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It is the form of a duration around 90 minutes with three acts that does define the cinematic form. This is so wrong it's not funny. The length criterion (not to mention the absurd narrative-biased three act structure criterion) completely disregards almost the entire avant-garde movement, many films of which are decidedly more cinematic than the narrative films you see to think define cinema (see Brakhage, Breer, Mekas, Deren, VanDerBeek, Fischinger, Richter, and so on). It also disregards masterpieces like 'Les Vampires' (399 min), Tarr's 'Sátántangó' (450 min), Lanzmann's 'Shoah' (544 min), and Rivette's 'Out 1' (729 min). I can assure you that these are among the most cinematic films of all time. The three act structure criterion doesn't just disregard films from the avant-garde, either, but narrative films with one act (short films), two acts ('Sleuth'), four ('Shoah'), more ('Playtime'), and so on, as well. Again, all incredibly cinematic films. Your definition of cinematic form seems to me to speak only of your very limited understanding of everything that cinema is and can be. It's like saying that literature is defined by novels of approximately four hundred pages in length, as opposed to by words, any number of them, arranged to make meaning, or to create aesthetic effect, no more, no less. It's like saying that music is defined by four quarter time compositions that run for approximately three or four minutes and have lyrics, often which rhyme, as opposed to by sounds, arranged by tone, timbre, quality, and so on, for any length of time, again for some sort of aesthetic effect, pleasurable or intentionally otherwise. It's like saying that visual art is defined by one type of paint, on canvas, hung on a wall somewhere in France, as opposed to by shapes, colours, textures, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. You see where I'm going. Cinema is not defined--not in any way, shape or form--by films with ninety minute running times and three act (narrative) structures. It is defined by moving images (occasionally accompanied by sounds) existing (they don't even have to be arranged) in time. Cinema is time-based images. This post has nothing to do with videoblogging (it could, but I'm tired and want to go to bed), but I'll stand up for cinema until my bloody, no doubt premature death. All I can say is that if our definitions of videoblogging are as restrictive and reductive as this definition of cinema, then we're simply not the right people to be developing it--in fact, I'd argue that we'd be hindering it far more than we'd be helping it. So where does iTunes fit in? RSS separates the content from the original blog post. Depending on where it goes, you'll find a whole spectrum of functionality. FireANT and Mefeedia give you some context and let you comment. iTunes doesn't let you comment, but if you click the right buttons you can see the blog post description and get back to the blog. TiVo probably only gives you the video. Maybe more later on. And of course we show these things on movie screens, which is about as far away as you can get. In my mind, good content is good content and can live anywhere. I personally don't get my undies in a bunch about where something is going to end up and what you call it. From the outset I suspected my videos could end up on little portable devices, and on TVs and film screens. [videoblogging] Re: The innocence of the vlogosphere is at an end
Right... I think Minnesota Stories is a bit of a hybrid. I also don't want to box it in or overly define it right now. It's young (1 month old!). It feels personal when I make something, and when other people contribute their video it's personal to them (usually). It's a conduit for stories, often personal and creative. Yet it's also a daily videoblog that challenges broadcast media. And I hope to God it makes money, otherwise I doubt I can sustain it. I think there a lot of people like Josh Leo would are doing something personal, but sure wouldn't mind making it a regular money-making form of _expression_. If you post more regularly, you'll probably have a bigger audience, and probably make more money from ads. So it sort of scales to however ambitious you are. Yep... good post Raymond. (Hmm, do I know any videoblogging hacks? Maybe content or compression?) cheers, Chuck http://mnstories.com http://secretvlog.com http://blogumentary.typepad.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, andrew michael baron [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I would say that you have identified two extremely extreme scenarios and that almost all videoblogs, including yours and Rocketboom, share from both of those approaches and many other ones too. [videoblogging] Re: ny times article on vlogging
I railed against (almost) everything I think is wrong with the NY Times article here: http://tinyurl.com/brpef That said, congrats to everyone, especially Ian, who deserves all the kudos we can shower upon him! I was also so happy to see the words Reality Sandwich. Too bad you won't see much of a traffic spike without links. Apparently Neopets.com will, though... I'm going to email Sarah Boxer about the links. We need to keep on journalists about this, sadly. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Clint Sharp [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/25/arts/25vlog.html? kudos to everyone who got a mention!
