[videoblogging] Online video editing sites

2010-06-08 Thread JD Lasica
Hi folks,

Haven't popped in here for a while. We're running a story on video
editing for nonprofits. I wanted to make passing mention of some
online alternatives, except most have bitten the dust in the past 3
years:

Eyespot folded.

Yahoo purchased Jumpcut and then closed it.

Cuts is gone.

Videoegg went into the advertising game.

Onetruemedia is more about dumbed-down video montages.

So what's left?

1. Jaycut.com

2. Motionbox.com

3. Moviemasher.com

That sound right? Anything else that's easy to use and smartly done
(and isn't simply an entertaining mashup tool)?

thanks!

[videoblogging] iphone compression in imovie and fcp

2008-10-23 Thread JD Lasica
Hi, I've been experiencing a strange problem.

I shoot my videos in HD on a Canon VH20 at 1440x1080 (and output the
finished works at 480x270).

When I output the finished video in iMovie (as mp4, .mov or .m4v for
the iphone), they turn out fine.

When I output it in Final Cut Pro, they turn out fine in .mp4 but
distorted (squeezed and deeper) when I export in either:
QuickTime Conversion iphone (where it's all done automatically)
QuickTime Conversion QuickTime Movie

I asked my FCP tutor about this yesterday and he couldn't track down
the problem.

Could the culprit be FCP's Audio/Video Settings? Or do I need to
change something on my camcorder?

Thanks, O Wisdom of the Mailing List!

[videoblogging] Re: iphone compression in imovie and fcp

2008-10-23 Thread JD Lasica
First, thanks, Rupert and Michael V. for the quick and incisive
responses. I learned a lot today!

This is quite interesting (to me, anyway). When I followed Michael's
method of exporting a .dv file in FC Pro, opening it in QuickTime Pro,
then exporting it as an .mp4, the resulting file was actually a
quarter-inch shorter than the version I exported directly as an .mp4
in iMovie 6. (Unless I'm doing something wrong. Michael, you said:
export a full resolution copy from FCP -- does that mean Export as DV
Stream? That's what I did.)

Rupert, thanks much. The Aspect Ratio is set to 0.

Where do I look to see if my Clip and Sequence are both checked as
Anamorphic - or not? I'm new to FCP and don't see the word Anamorphic
anywhere ...

thanks!

Rupert wrote:

You can find it in your Browser in FCP - the list of all the clips
sequences. Either scroll across to read the detailed settings for
each clip sequence, or ctrl+click on them individually and choose
Item Properties.

Actually, that's the first place I looked. :~) But I didn't know
Anamorphic was a heading. OK, both the sequence and the movie file are
unchecked, so not Anamorphic. Something else is the culprit.

I just tried the ipod compression trick in FCP -- and it didn't work.

It comes out squeezed, just as with the iphone conversion.

Ah, well, back to the drawing board. Or the Verdi workaround.

[videoblogging] title stretching bug

2008-08-06 Thread JD Lasica
Hi folks,

I'm sure this has come up before, but I missed the answer and it's
driving me crazy.

I'm still using iMovie HD (6.03) on a Mac Pro, and shooting HD video
on 2 camcorders.

But whenever I add a title of any kind, it stretches and distorts:

http://www.socialmedia.biz/images/2008/08/06/trivalley_type.jpg

I've tried checking and unchecking all the preferences in iMovie
(including Automatic DV pillarboxing and letterboxing), to no avail.

The only solution that has worked so far is to do a Save As and copy
the entire 10-gigabyte movie to another version, but that's a waste of
time and space.

Does anyone know the solution? (I did a Google search but came up empty.)

thanks!

[videoblogging] footage wanted

2008-03-11 Thread JD Lasica
For a producers screencast we're putting together in the next 48 hours
for Bid4Vid.com, we need a 4-second clip of:

 - a videographer recording footage, or setting up a video recorder,
in an office setting

or

- 3 to 4 second shot of a film crew (trailing behind or from the front)

and

 - a short clip of a sound engineer or lighting specialist (just
someone at sound controls or setting up lights).

Contact me offline and we'll discuss how to credit you or make a payment.

(Ordinarily I'd shoot this myself but I'm under the weather and on a

[videoblogging] Revlogging redux

2007-02-22 Thread JD Lasica
Just a quick note to let you know that we listen to the community and
put some time into tweaking our UI to make it clear whenever we revlog
a video from elsewhere on the Ourmedia home page.

Markus Sandy of Outhink's development team dove in and added some new
functionality to our editing tool suite so that whenever we point
offsite to a cool video elsewhere, we have a short bit of text
explaining what this is or why we liked it, along with changes to our
standard wording. It now says Revlogged From: and says Producer's
page rather than Member's page. (As before, we don't touch the
media or put it on our servers.)

We sent a note to United Vloggers last night telling them we featured
one of their clips, and they replied a short time later saying they
were already getting lots of inbound traffic and appreciated the
shoutout.

We'd like to do this more often in the coming weeks and months, so
that Ourmedia isn't just about media on the Internet Archive's servers
but also about highlighted socially meaningful or creative videos on
other sites as well. One idea is to give users the ability to create
channels or playlists of media regardless of where the media files
actually are hosted.

NewTeeVee may be posting something about all this in the coming days.

Thanks for the good feedback and input, everyone! And send me links to
any videos for which you'd like to get wider visibility.

While I agree with the sentiment -- and indeed, that's exactly what
I've done, uploaded my videos to YouTube with CC post-rolls -- I think
we should all keep in mind that by uploading to YouTube, you're
agreeing to their Terms of Service, which supersedes any conditions
you may or may not include as part of your video.

In other words, if you include a Creative Commons noncommercial
license when you upload to YouTube, YouTube still has the right to
license your video to its business partners to show off on their
sites. As attorney Colette Vogele told me in a different context:
Creative Commons licenses are essentially nonoperational on Yahoo!

(TOS comparison: http://www.ourmedia.org/node/283309)

Perhaps the members of this list, together with Creative Commons,
should launch a petition campaign to persuade YouTube to include CC

2007-01-18 Thread JD Lasica
We're doing something different with Ourmedia: We'll be using our
front page to point people to the coolest grassroots video regardless
of where it resides. The videos don't have to be on our site, they
don't have to live on the Archive's servers. We'd like to showcase a
new lead video just about every day.

All I need is a url of the page with the accompanying metadata, and a
url of where the video lives. (Some with Flash, this is often
impossible, alas.) We'll input the title of the work and your name and
link directly to your blog/site and to the file's hosting site.

It would help if you sent along a screenshot (320x256 or so), but
that's not required. I'll drop you an email when your video gets
featured.

Doesn't have to be new, just well done and engaging. QuickTime or
MPEG4 would be best, but WMV, Flash or Real work too. Oversize vids
(widescreen), etc., won't work with our current setup.

Questions? Lemme know.

[videoblogging] re: gumby IP question

2006-04-26 Thread JD Lasica

I promised I'd ask an attorney friend about our friend Gumby, and
Andrew's idea of dusting him off and remixing him for the 21st
century. Here's what she says:

This Gumby Problem is a lot like the Peter Pan case I worked on
(and eventually settled) at Stanford last year. The problem is: what
happens to trademarked characters once the copyrighted work falls
into the public domain. (I'm assuming here that Gumby is in fact in
the PD.) In the Peter Pan case, it's absolutely clear that the
original story was in the public domain (published 1911). So our
client used the characters and made a sequel to Peter Pan that is set
in this century. Our client had the characters act differently, put
them in new modern situations, and even challenged the idea that
growing up is necessarily a bad thing. The Peter Pan copyright owner
claimed both copyright and trademark infringement. There are cases
that state pretty clearly that the characters also fall into the PD
when a copyright expires, so the copyright question is, in my
opinion, fairly clear (though we fought about it in the Peter Pan case).

The TM question is trickier because generally a TM lasts as long as
it is not abandoned by the owner and is properly used to identify a
good or service. You can still parody the mark without infringement
or dilution concerns (thanks to our First Amendment), but you always
need to keep an eye out for whether you are using the mark in a
manner that will cause customer confusion (infringement) or whether
you are possibly diluting the Gumby mark. (Dilution claims stem from
either blurring [e.g., causing a famous mark to lose some of its
distinctiveness due to use of a similar marks] or
tarnishing [e.g., associating a famous mark with unpleasant or
unwholesome products/services] the mark.)

I hope this is helpful!

Best,
Colette Vogele

[videoblogging] Re: Trademark/Copyrights Question

2006-04-24 Thread JD Lasica

Hi Andrew, it's too bad your email query didn't get more thoughtful
responses here. I suspect it's because it's largely a legal question,
and most of us aren't lawyers. Be that as it may ...

You're right: varioius early versions of Gumby are indeed in the
public domain. Here are 8 PD gumby cartoons:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002VKLQK/103-5161085-4495048?v=glancen=130

To your larger question about creating derivative works: I'm no
attorney, but my understanding is that

- you're free to make derivative works from any work in the public
domain, including these Gumby cartoons

- you could copyright your specific work but not Gumby's likeness,
since he has been re-copyrighted. So your scenario of giving away
Gumby likely wouldn't work.

- trademarks are a whole nuther ball of wax.

There are lots of examples of copyrighted works enterting the public
domain, and then corporations trying to exercise retroactive claims
over the use of such works. They can't. Still, it's a somewhat murky
area of the law -- which is what these corporatons are counting on. I
wouldn't assume that a simple answer has been worked out -- it's not
in their interests to provide clearcut answers.

Shall I ask my lawyer friends to weigh in? :~)

With that in mind I have a question about this mashup stuff. Is there
any particular partnering organisation that was the primary driving
force for this mashup stuff, does one of them have such things as one

guess I am interested in whether this is something that will be
expanded upon in future, and whether its in the form of a new
website/service/social network thing, or as part of an existing thing
like ourmedia? Because I want to know who the right people and groups
are to talk to about this in future.

Well, yes. Outhink, which sponsored this mashup event, is intent on
creating a rich and deep mashup marketplace and remix center for both
licensed and unlicensed works: video, music, audio, etc.

Ourmedia will be helping with the effort. I'm very excited about the

I know sull has previously said he's jazzed by the idea, and now Steve

[videoblogging] Video mashup mania

2006-03-26 Thread JD Lasica
Two weeks ago there was what I think may turn out to be a significant
milestone in the world of video mashups. It didn't receive any mention
on this list (because we've all been running around like crazy), but I
thought some of you may want to know about it.

Shortly before the South by Southwest Music Festival, Outhink, IODA
(the Independent Online Distribution Alliance) and Ourmedia joined
forces to sponsor a video mashup event. Five indie music labels agreed
to have one of their bands' songs used as the music track for a video
mash-up.

I invited a half-dozen videobloggers from this list to participate,
and Ryanne Hodson, Josh Leo, Steve Garfield, Annaliese Rittershaus and
I wound up producing 2- to 5-minute video shorts. The rules were
minimal: grab whatever video footage or photos you've shot, or public
domain or CC-NC licensed material, and mix into a visual collage that
works with the music.

We then showed them to the bands and labels, and they were blown away.
So was I. I was especially fascinated by the three different
treatments of the same song by three vloggers.

As I told The Herms, why pay a director $100,000 to make a music video
when you can get talented vloggers to do it free, or cheap? Outhink
hopes to facilitate a media remix marketplace that brings together
different constituencies -- say, a band looking for a talented remix
artist could come to a site to check out his past mashups -- and,
eventually, there should be a commercial marketplace for these kinds
of talents.

Check them out on the Outhink Media Showcase site:

 http://node101.org/community/index.php/SXSW06
You get an error when you save the page but it will work.

Who else in the vlogosphere is coming?

Who knows Austin? Where are the hot dining/drinking spots?

Is it still true that I also need to register at IA? Probably I did that
many moons ago when I first registered on Ourmedia, but I don't remember
whether I did, and I have no way of knowing except to go back and try to
figure out what username-password combo I might have used back then. And I
thought that limitation was supposed to be fixed long ago?

In the interests of fairness I'd love to get a clip hosted by Ourmedia onto
that page, but for the moment I stand defeated in my attempts.

Hi. Yes, when you register at the Archive and then at Ourmedia (or
vice-versa), your Archive email address gets saved on your Ourmedia
account settings page. They need to match (the registration emails you
use at both sites), otherwise Ourmedia won't be able to communicate
with the Archive side of things where the media is stored.

I know it's of little solace, but we'll be melding these dual
registration systems into one (finally!) by spring.

If you've spent time at other video hosting sites, you know that
uploading video over the Web is an iffy proposition (one interruption
and it stops and doesn't resume). That's why we offer Ourmedia
Publisher, a downloadable tool that should be used for any file bigger
than 20MB. If your upload is interrupted by Internet traffic, it
resumes where it left off.

Still, you're absolutely right that the site needs a major usability
overhaul, and we've begun that process.

We're always happy to help with any problems you may be having by
emailing [EMAIL PROTECTED] Often, we're able to plop in your
identifier and the media will appear within moments. If you've tried
that (we're overworked and understaffed -- but unlike youtube and
other for-profits, we're all volunteers and all unpaid), you can email
me directly: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Some of the performance issues we've had can be tied to our current
server. We've been promised bigger, better servers by two partners
since last November. They have yet to deliver, but we should have new
servers in 4-6 weeks.

Kath O'Donnell wrote:

I'm using the upload tool for windows. for some reason it
doesn't upload the tags or copyright settings and a couple of other optional
settings, so I need to edit them on the page once it's finished uploading
and I have the final page url. but I just thought that was the tool being a
little buggy. I usually end up editing something anyway once I see the
published page even if this bug is not there, just to tidy up how it looks
so it's not a problem for me.

You're absolutely right, it's a bug that's been bugging me for months.
:~) Alas, no coders have volunteered to fix it. But it's at the top of
our to-fix list.

I think IA will be around longer than most of the other free
uploading spaces atm. and apart from a few test personal videos most of my
content is archival/documentation of arts/muisc events or projects so I
don't want to have to reupload them all again in 5 years.

That's what we believe, too. The Archive will be around, possibly for
generations, while the vast majority of the 97 video hosting services
that have followed us in the past 11 months won't be.

Meantime, after we fix our current usability and reliability issues,
we have an ambitious slate of projects to advance the open
media/participatory media movement in the months ahead. As always,
we'd love to hear from volunteers who want to help out in moderating,
coding and designing the site.

Thanks for your patience. There'll be good news ahead. Hope to see you
all at Vloggercon in June!!

[videoblogging] Elisabeth Shue

2006-02-19 Thread JD Lasica
One of the side benefits of being a citizen journalist/vlogger is that
you sometimes run into opportunities you wouldn't normally have if you
weren't lugging along a camcorder. Such was the case Friday night when
I asked actress Elisabeth Shue to say a few words about Creative
Commons.

Here's the short writeup on my vlog:
http://www.realpeoplenetwork.com/2006/02/actress_elisabe.html
(the video is available in mp4 or m4v)

(For you kids, Shue starred in such films as Leaving Las Vegas, for
which she won an Oscar nomination for best actress, The Karate Kid,
The Trigger Effect, Back to the Future 2 and 3, Cocktail, etc.)

I also did a short video interview with her husband, filmmaker Davis Guggenheim:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jdlasica/101814333/
again, available in mp4 or m4v

And I created a Flickr photo gallery of screen shots from Elisabeth's
video shoot:

As well as a BitTorrent gallery:

[videoblogging] re: http://youare.tv/

2006-01-14 Thread JD Lasica
Josh, nice spending time with ya this week, but when you write:

let's cut the guy a break.
He's listening and interacting here. That's the first step.
Legaleze like Terms Of Service agreements are hard to write. Nobody
knows what to do here, and paying lawyers to do this gets expensive...
and the lawyers can often come up with some draconian stuff anyway.
Usually people just copy TOS from other sites just to get it up and
get going. They often don't think about it and the users don't often
read it.

Not so fast. Look at Ourmedia's Terms of Service:

http://www.ourmedia.org/rules

The first line says:

1. You own your own material. Ourmedia claims no intellectual property
rights over the material you provide to our service.

Simple, straightforward. Who wrote it? Me, someone with no law degree.
Sure, a lawyer reviewed it afterward, but what your enterprise stands
for has to come down from the top.

Too many of us don't bother to read site TOS because we're trusting,
or think it won't affect us. We need to get educated and push back
whenever we see outrageous terms such as these. Public exposure,
criticism and even ridicule are the first steps toward that end.

If I recall correctly, members of this list pushed back at BlipTV over
its original TOS, and they quickly revised them.

Let's see what YouAre.tv does in response. But I'd be surprised if
they follow Ourmedia's example.

[videoblogging] Real People Network

2006-01-03 Thread JD Lasica
Thought some of you would be interested in this.

I've been blogging since early '01 and videoblogging for a year or so,
and have been reluctant to launch yet another blog. But I've become
convinced that there's value in creating a vlog that's focused almost
entirely on the videoblogging phenomenon.

So I spent the holiday weekend scratching out css code from the ground
up and came up with this:

http://www.realpeoplenetwork.com

I realize that some of the design decisions (featuring apple's video
iPod, natch) will rub some vloggers the wrong way. I also think a year
from now, a heck of a lot of us will be using H.264.

Be that as it may, this is just one more pebble in the growing vlog
pond. Real People Network is geared mostly for newcomers to the
vlogging world, who don't know about rss, or bittorrent, or how to
find free video. The ability to download photos via BitTorrent is an
interesting touch.

This is version 1.0, so I'll be adding info about other devices that
play blog video.

You'll find plenty of broken links over the next week or so, but the
design's essentially done.

I've only been able to test it on a PC (firefox and ie) and 15-inch
Mac Powerbook (firefox and safari), so if you see anything that looks
funny in other displays, please let me know.

Looking forward to seeing some of you at Macworld next week!

[videoblogging] H264

2005-12-24 Thread JD Lasica
Someone pointed to Om Malik's report on Google Video, where a reader
left this comment:

In my ideal world, all forms of digital video would be Quicktime and
encoded in H264, because nothing out there, at this time, comes even
close to even hoping to touch H264's image quality at the lowest
bitrates, it kicks insane butt, it blows me away.

That's been my experience as well. The image quality of everything I
encode in 'movie to ipod' (m4v) is MUCH better than what I get in any
other codec, the file size is the same or smaller, and I haven't seen
any problems with distorted aspect ratio.

I'm launching a videoblog next week and at this point expect to encode
in both m4v and mpeg4.

Can anyone point me to any stats on what % of PC/Mac users can play
H264/m4v video on their computers (I assume they need to have
QuickTime 7)? I'll guess: a small % of all users, but a fair number of
video aficionados.

What % can play MPEG4? (presumably a very high percentage - apple says
QT6 has been downloaded 350 million times)

thanks!

We can do better, packaging this movement through Node101, Ourmedia

[videoblogging] Audacity preferences

2005-12-03 Thread JD Lasica
Hi all,

I'm trying to digitize audio off of a microcassette cassette recorder
onto a Powerbook G4 using Audacity.

Should be simple as hell, right? Well, I've spent the past 6 hours
trying to do this, and I'm totally frustrated. Google also proved
useless. So I'm turning to the wise minds in this group.

I would have expected several options in Audacity Preferences to
select from. But there's only one:
Audacity Preferences
Audio I|O
Recording
Device: Built-in Audio

This lets me record live sounds, but nothing else.

I have a 1/8 jack running from the recorder's Ear (headphone) jack
to the G4's headphone jack.

So: how do I record sound off an attached device?

I had the same problem last year, and an Audacity rep wrote back:

This is a limitation of the mac audio controls - there isn't a way to
choose inputs from within an application. You will need to use Apple's
Sound and Midi Setup utility to choose the Line input as the system
default.

You may also have to select the correct audio device on the Audio I/O
tab of the preferences.

Well, I don't even see a Sound and Midi Setup utility in Tiger, and
the Midi Setup utility offers no choice of a Line input.

Arrrgh! Thanks for any help! I need to do this on Sunday.

[videoblogging] Zadi and Ourmedia

2005-10-24 Thread JD Lasica
Zadi's Karmagrrl blog and Ourmedia are finalists -- in the same
multimedia category, no less! -- in the international Best of the
Blogs competition announced today.

http://www.newmediamusings.com/blog/2005/10/ourmedia_a_best.html

Incidentally, today Ourmedia upgraded from a 2GB to a 4GB bandwidth
pipe, so you should see immediate improvements in the site's
performance.

[videoblogging] Re: Ourmedia status (was: Weird OurMedia.org error message:)

2005-10-23 Thread JD Lasica
Boy, I really hate these weird-ass default Drupal error messages.

We've changed dozens of them since launch -- trying to translate
Drupalese into English -- but haven't caught them all.

As for new servers, we should hear something this week. Will let you know.

Great to see Jay and Ryan, and Mike from Blip, at the Open Media
Developers Summit over the weekend!

[videoblogging] video iPod, H.264 and more

2005-10-23 Thread JD Lasica
I just posted a review of my video iPod in which Steve of Elbows

Also has some answers to Steve's conjecture about H.264 settings.

B Yen, see Ourmedia's fair use guidelines page:

http://www.ourmedia.org/rules/fair-use

At Ourmedia (which uses archive.org's servers), we won't let you
republish a news telecast because you find it newsworthy, but we will
allow transformative uses (commentary while piecing together news
outtakes) or reproductions of certain kinds of news footage.

[videoblogging] editing audio in iMovie

2005-09-22 Thread JD Lasica
A quick question:

I put together an 11-minute video about mashups on Ourmedia. I
converted the original formats (WMV and Flash) into QuickTime, then
imported them into iMovie HD, and then in most cases extracted the
audio (so that the sound would continue over the Titles between video
clps).

Here's the vid:

http://www.archive.org/download/JDLasicaMashupsintheMiddle/mashups.mp4

BUT I didn't see a way to trim/delete the portions of an audio track I
wasn't using. (Couldn't find the answer in iMovie Help.)

According to this page about iMovie4 ...
http://www.cap.nsw.edu.au/techtalk/imovie.htm
... to edit out unwanted audio, I should see a box labeled Edit
volume at the bottom of the page. I have iMovie5, and there's no
equivalent Edit volume control that I can see, and when I mouse over
an unwanted portion, it doesn't turn into an arrow that lets you
delete that portion, it simply lets you turn down the sound to zero.

So:

- Is iMovie5 less capable than iMovie4? If not, how do you trim out
unwanted audio?

- OR is the answer that turning the audio down to zero is essentially
the answer, and that these unheard portions of the movie project do
not increase the file size once it's converted into a codec like
mpeg4?

thanks!

[videoblogging] MPEG-4 settings

2005-09-08 Thread JD Lasica
Today I spent a little while experimenting with MPEG-4 settings.
Because some people prefer MPEG4 to QuickTime, I've been hoping to do
more of my video in mp4, but I've never been pleased with the default
settings.

So, I thought I'd ask the wise people on this list for some advice or
pointers for MPEG-4 compression settings for publishing a video for
display on Ourmedia. (And, yes, I know all about Michael Verdi's PDF
primer on Video compression with 3iv ...
http://www.ourmedia.org/node/42835).

(1) The application.

I generally edit video on my Mac (OS 10.3.9) with imovie HD 5.0.2. I
also have a Sony Vaio desktop PC. So I'm open to using a different
application (I have Final Cut Pro, for eg, but haven't had time to
learn it), if that would be advisable. But I think I'm probably fine
with what I've got.

(2) The settings.

When I choose Share (to encode the video), under Options/MP4 Export
settings, I see ...

Video:
On a hunch, I chose MPEG-4 Improved (rather than MPEG-4 Basic)
Data rata 256 kbps (this was pre-entered)
Image Size: 320x240 QVGA
Frame rate: 12 (i use 15 when there's more movement in the video)
Key frame: every 75 frames (used this from a prior tutorial from Ryan)

Audio:
Audio format: AAC-LC (Music) (that's the only choice given for MPEG-4 Improved)
Date rate: see below
Channels: Mono/Stereo
Output sample rate: 44.1 kHz
Encoding qality: best (upped it from better)

Streaming:
Enable streaming? yes
maximum packe size: 1450 bytes
maximum packet duration: 100 ms
optimize for server? yes

I encoded an eight-minute video at 15fps, 64 kbps audio, mono, and it
came in at 27.8 mb:

http://www.archive.org/download/JDLasicaRUSiriusonpodcasting/RU_Sirius.mp4

I was happy with the video quality but unhappy with the audio.

So, I tried again, at 12fps, 96kbps audio, mono, and it came in at
40.8 mb. I was still happy with the video quality but still unhappy
with the audio.

I adjusted it to 128 kbps audio, stereo, and it came in at 44 mb. I
was happy with the video and audio quality. And I'm happy at how fast
the video starts playing. Here it is:

http://ia300112.us.archive.org/0/items/JDLasicaMondoGlobosRUSiriusonthepodcastingphenomenon/RU_Sirius_new.mp4

But I'm wondering if I should play with any of the other settings
above to reduce the file size without compromising audio or video in
any significant way and without reducing the window size. For example,
I need a primer on things like MPEG-4 Improved vs MPEG-4 Basic, data
rate, key frame, etc.

We're creating a knowledge base/learning center on Ourmedia, so I'm
hoping that any information shared on this list about this topic can
be shared on Ourmedia as well.

thanks!

[videoblogging] Re: Speed of Ourmedia/IA

2005-08-10 Thread JD Lasica

Skullcrew, I could be off here, but could the problem be that you
didn't check the Fast Start checkbox (or streaming, or whatever it's
called in your QT version) when you compressed your video?

You're right, it took 4:17 to load on my PC ... but when it began, it
was fully loaded. That suggests to me that QT didn't do its
progressive download here.

Any QuickTime experts in the crowd? That sound reasonable?

The Internet Archive's performance has actually gotten better lately.

Is it my videos or is the archive just running slow?

This video I just posted last night still takes forever to even start
playing. It is only 45mb, which in video terms to me, doesn't sound
that bad.

NickStankusWalmartGumRunwithJon/WalmartGumRunwithJon.mov

Has anyone experienced this issue? I guess I cannot complain for a
free service.

Is there something that I need to modify on my IA homepage to make
the videos stream better?

Thoughts?

nixter out. =X

[videoblogging] new videoblogging page

2005-07-15 Thread JD Lasica

I've been wrestling with the question of how to showcase the blog
videos I've been creating in recent weeks. Do I really want to create
another blog for that? (I already have 3 blogs -- 4, if you count the
one i have at ourmedia.)

I finally decided, no. I'll blog about my videos as part of my regular
weblog. And I'll create a page to showcase them. So far, they all fall
under the heading of citizen journalism. I'm no Steve G., but then,
who is? :~)

Any thoughts on how to improve this?

http://www.newmediamusings.com/blog/videoblog.html

I need to add an RSS subscription icon, for one thing...
