- Syndication. Is being able to syndicate your video to other sites of any value? The idea would be to have the option to publish your video to other sites and then they can decide if they want it or not, furthering the reach of the video. Do you mean RSS? RSS is crucial. [videoblogging] Re: A question to the video bloggers
Let's say there was a website that allowed you to post your video clips to be viewed and purchased by mobile phone customers. Would you use it? Only if the licensing wasn't restrictive (I own my content and can take it anywhere I like). Then I would try it. If it generated some real $, I'd continue to use it. Hell, if it was easy to use I'd probably use it even if it generated no significant $ (for anyone), just as a service to my users. Peter Yahoo! I removed most outside links from the Wikipedia videoblogging entry (including the one to Mefeedia), leaving only a link to a few key, nonprofit sites: this group, freevlog and vlogmap. Sure, disagree, but its better this way than with a long list of self-serving commercial links. Wikipedia is not a directory. Then again, I'm sure someone will change it back. Oh well. So you will be syndicating Flash FLV files using RSS enclosures? If that's the case, then FireAnt is the only aggregator that supports this at the moment. Don't forget Mefeedia.com, we support Flash video ;) Flash may be more lightweight but its certainly not as portable. Absolutely, as in: you can't play Flash on your video iPod. Do you really want to ignore the iPod market? It's a big choice, and Flash is the somewhat easier choice technically, but not necessarily the best one marketwise. Peter Yahoo! [videoblogging] Re: new strmz.com beta
The site is a mashup of programming from major media outlets; popular video-blogs and podcasts; and top-rated content from video upload services Nothing against mashup services, and I hope this one has a great future, but I see a problem: - major media outlets - popular videoblogs - top-rated content If you focus on major, popular and top-rated, you will not add any real value in letting discovering people cool stuff. The only way to add value as a mash-up service or aggregator is to show people obscure, unknown or unpopular stuff that is good, that you have discovered. Just a tip :) Don't focus on the popular or you're competing with AOL video on *their* terms. Better to compete with them by offering us something different. Peter -- http://mefeedia.com Yahoo! Having said that, I do think that FireANT (on the Mac at least) could have a much larger directory of feeds to choose from, and perhaps an 'activate' checkbox... I'm thinking of the huge list available in standard aggregators like NetNewsWire. Would be a nice touch and appear less like a cliquey club. Yeah.. I've removed the default subscriptions (the usual suspects) from Mefeedia for that reason, to level the playing field. I know ANT is coming out with a new directory which probably will do its best to level the playing field as well. OK, it is as I thought: the data is being cached. I just talked to the Feedburner guys. The stats are just a little out of date because of caching. We've been sending the correct amount since yesterday, and by tomorrow everything should be showing the correct amount. The Feedburner live stats go back 24-26 hours (interesting to know!), so today in about an hour or two those should show the correct amount (we've been sending the correct stats since yesterday). Hey Ryanne, your subscriber number had a problem, it's fixed now, by tonight Feedburner should report the correct one. There is a difference between subscribers and people who watch. Someone might be subscribed to you, but they might never turn on their computer, so they're not watching any videos. ps: yes, if they watch it on the Mefeedia site that registers too. [videoblogging] Re: making directories
You're assuming that the lact of a directory is a problem. Here's my view. First, with video, you need a lot more info to decide where to put your attention than with text, because video demands more attention (you can't just quickly scan it like a text post, for example). So for video, you need more filters, metadata, information that helps you decide what to put your limited attention towards. It's an attention war. Hence, directories can be useful. Second: we as vloggers, for some reason, aren't really linking a lot to each other's videos. I'm not sure why that is. But it does mean that we have less interlinking than textbloggers to help people discover new stuff. Hence, a directory makes sense, again. Third: search for video is an unsolved problem, and will continue to be, especially for our type of long tail video. Hence, .. you get the picture :) Then again I could be wrong also and Google might come out with a great algorythmic way to find videos you want to watch, or we might all start linking like crazy to each others videos and we wouldn't need directories to discover cool stuff. Oh well. Peter -- http://mefeedia.com Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- 1.2 million kids a year are victims of human trafficking. [videoblogging] Vlog porn - my fix for now: comments?
Hi all, so I implemented a fix (it's not live yet, but will be next week). Here are some screenshots: http://flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/69373519/ http://flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/69373437/ http://flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/69373386 What it does is put a 'parental advisory thumbnail on feeds that we have flagged as porn (it is surprisingly easy to catch most porn feeds and flag them manually). If you subscribe to this feed or queue its videos, you get the real thumbnails. This addresses the problem of innocently browsing Mefeedia and seeing pictures that can be fairly heavy, especially before breakfast. It doesn't censor any feeds in any way apart from just not showing the picture - you can still subscribe to the feeds, watch videos. If you want to. But it does make browsing videoblogs a nicer experience, and de-emphasizes the inevitable porn feeds. Of course this is just my first stab at fixing the problem, and this approach will evolve over the coming months and years. What do you guys and girls think about this approach for now? Does it work? Does it address your concerns? Would you show Mefeedia to your kids/students as a place to find videoblogs? Cheers, Peter -- http://mefeedia.com Yahoo! I wouldn't go with G, PG, X type ratings... As mentioned, 'adult' doesn't always mean X, etc. Perhaps following the iTunes model of marking things as 'mature' or 'explicit' or whatever might work. For people not logged in, I would filter out all 'mature' content. For people who are logged in, provide a checkbox for whether they want 'mature' content displayed to them or not. Don't the various search engines do something similar with the results they display? Good ideas. I am taking the light approach here: take it easy on the fixes. Step by step. In a month or two, I am sure we'll add some more features. There's a distinction between 'porn' and 'kid-safe' yes. The kidsafe tag is a good example: http://mefeedia.com/tags/kidsafe know that I'm sometimes not even sure if I should want videos in FireANT when my kids are in the room. Yep. It's a complex issue. I just want to make sure we provide solutions that scale and that work, but don't censor. There is enough censorship out there. Peter Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Get Bzzzy! [videoblogging] Re: Porn on mefeedia??
Hey Jay, yes, I noticed it as well. It was inevitable, I am actually surprised it took this long.. So here's the plan we have, for now. In a few months we'll probably add more features. I have given this some thought over the past months, and there is a balance: I want mefeedia to be an open directory, which means we don't censor feeds (except in extreme cases of hate speach and such...), not even porn. The best example of a feed I don't want to censor is Richard's (MAdge Weinstein), which is sometimes very good, and a great videoblog, but also could be called pretty nasty porn, sometimes. So: if we don't want to censor, but we do want to protect, what do we do? While surfing Mefeedia, the shock I get is from seeing the thumbnails. It's just not nice to see a thumbnail of some naked guy if you're not expecting it. Bad experience. So I have decided to, for porn feeds, *not* to show thumbnails in the website. The feeds are still there, you can still subscribe to them. But the pictures are hidden: so you can browse the website and you won't see any naked people. I think that's a good first step. It's a careful step. I am very conscious of not wanting to censor people's feeds. But I think this will help. It should be live in about a week. Any comments? Peter Just wanted to throw something out to the vlogger community. I just went to check mefeedia site. Because of an email from Devlon and was bummed to see some one had submitted a Iporn site which was inevitable. I personally am not opposed to porn but when it comes up so blatantly we as vloggers are going to need to find away so that when we are showing new people youth how to Vlog and the tools that are available that this stuff does not hit us in the face. Hopefully someone is exploring ways to deal with it. I am commited to helping others learn to Vlogg. Why not provide an option for users to flag certain content as questionable or offensive, then put that content/feed into moderation queue for possible removal. Flagging is another thing we're working on. The key is this though: I don't want to remove feeds like Richard's, even though they contain porn. If you have an open directory, you need to be open. I *will* remove things like children's porn or hate speech, or course. But anyway, giving users the choice is the way to go I think. [videoblogging] Re: Blogger templates SPECIFIALLY for bloggers
OK, Here's an overview of the Mefeedia thumbnail feature. 1) It doesn't generate thumbs for *all* types of movies. For most movies it does, including Flash movies, Windows media movies, you name it. There are some codecs that it can't handle, unfortunately, but it gets most of them. 2) It takes the server about 3 minutes of hard, processor intensive work per movie: download movie, create thumbs, resize thumbs, cleanup. This is a dual processor server with 2 Gigs of RAM. 3) We do 2 movies per minute now (before we switched to the dedicated server we did 1 movie each 5 minutes). So far, in total, we've generated thumbs for 64,695 movies. Mefeedia has 111,054 movies in its database, so we are clearly behind. More and more people are starting to videoblog, so its like a race to keep up. 4) We are currently working to find solutions that don't require me to pay 10s of 1000s of dollars in server fees (out of my pocket).. 5) The reason that old movies still haven't been thumbed is that there are about 55,000 movies in the queue right now - it just takes time. We're working on solutions. So in short: hang in there. It's always getting better, and this is one of the biggest priorities we are working on :) Thanks for your patience! Let me know if you have any other specific questions I can answer :) Isn't this fun? Hey, for competing with Yahoo and Google I think we're doing alright ;) Cheers, Peter PS: the math below is somewhat mistaken. For each movie, we generate about 20 thumbnails, so our total so far is well over 1,000,000 thumbnails generated. i understand all that but do the math: there are less than 2000 feeds as of today i think 500 videos per feed is grossly over estimating most people's *average* output that's 100,000 thumbs we have been told that they have been generating them for several weeks (months?) now let's assume only 6 weeks = 6 x 7 x 24 x 60 = 60480 minutes that's 16 minutes per thumb and counting more likely, there is an average of less than 200 videos per feed at this time so 40 minutes per thumb or higher? wow, that's a lot! this still does not explain why older video thumbs are not slowly showing up for me and why some new ones aren't (no changes in codec here) Joshua Kinberg wrote: Thumbnail generation is a very CPU intensive process. Mefeedia's server must download your videos, extract thumbs and save them, then remove the video. Not to mention there are often errors due to various video codecs and the fact that it can be hard to decode all types and extract images. Even Yahoo! has difficulty in this area, and they have much better server resources than MeFeedia. Someone in Yahoo! Media Search once told me that it can take several days for a video to be indexed properly even after the crawler has discovered the video. Its for the same exact reason. There is a batch queue set up to extract the thumbnails and do whatever other processing needed on the file before it gets indexed properly by the search engine. -Josh On 11/29/05, Devlon [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Our thumbnail generating code got a bit behind, but it will catch up soon. It is very easy and subtle to build closed technologies, the differences are often subtle but have a big effect. Apart from that, Mefeedia is right now just plain the best place to find videoblogs. Perhaps in a year from now, vlogs.yahoo.com will be the best place to find videoblogs, or perhaps not :) Who knows. But meanwhile I am committed to building the absolute best site I can, and to make sure all the videobloggers are represented in there. In a future of 1,000,000 television channels on the internet, it's important to have independent places where people can find videobloggers. Here's the deal: the Time Warners/MTVs/... of this world are busily working on building great places where you can find 1000s of hours of commercial video. Who will build the places where you can find the independent videobloggers? Not them. And apparently not Brightcove. Anyways, enough with the preaching already! I'll shut up now. Cheers! Peter Yahoo! [videoblogging] Re: revlog
is it customary to ask permission when revlogging someone's work in your on vlog? If you want to link to someone's blog and to their video, you don't have to ask permission. This is the web, linking is what we do. Not even a need for a CC license. The only problem arises is when you make it look as if these videos are being created by you, or are coming from your site. Well the time has come. I want to see all of your movies. I have tons of subscribers and they want movies for their ipods. This is a website designed with you in mind and your talent. The theater if full and it is time for you to perform. I want your short and long films. Um, Paul, excuse my language, but this list does not consist of idiots. Your message was, frankly, insulting. People work hard on their videos, and have video blogs to show them. This is personal media. If you want to feature *our* content on *your* site, you better be clear about the license, your intentions and such. Why would someone send you a video, for free, instead of featuring it on their own videoblog? We have RSS for distribution. If you want to link to videobloggers , promote them and in that way contribute to this ecology, feel free, that's how the web works and that would be really helpful. [videoblogging] Re: Happy new year
Same here, trying to figure out what to do next year.. In my case, it always ends up involving Mefeedia. Being more international and connecting different communities is superimportant I think.. As a first step, I'm gonna make a Spanish Mefeedia version, so it becomes easier for Spanish speakers to browse the 1000s of videobloggers and discover what's being done.. Later I want to go French, Japanese, you name it.. And I also want to build in ways that those different languages can easily find each others' stuff... because that's the great thing about video! You don't necessarily *have* to speak English to appreciate a lot of the stuff we're doing... Substitling is another part, if I can find a way to let people subtitle each others' videos, that would help spread video as well... When we started this the dream was always to be able to see videos from other countries.. We're already partly there: you can go to http://mefeedia.com/tags/ and there is a list of cities and countries you can browse around in.. Africa, Asia, you name it... The next step is to get them involved and connected. Don't underestimate them: the French, Japanese, Spanish are starting to videoblog like crazy. I want Mefeedia to be a place where you can explore these different parts of the world, and where they can connect. So I guess that's my mission for next year! What's yours? you need to be able to parse the user count (often passed through in the user agent field) Yes, Mefeedia will soon report this info in the header of its spider, so that Feedburner stats can take your Mefeedia subscribers into account. Peter If it says 'copying' when I do this, then the file is compatible, if its not compatible then nothing happens, no error message, the file just doesnt get copied. I assume that when setting itunes to automatically sync podcasts, the same will apply, and it will simply ignore any files that arent compatible. The behaviour is identical whether the files are mov, mp4 or m4v. As for settings, the only options really are the podcast ones, specifying whether all podcasts get synced, or just specific ones you tick, or none (manual). This behaviour isnt particularily intuitive, and definately needs to improve. [videoblogging] Re: I need to get a friend.
Exactly. That's why I never let people comment on a video at mefeedia, but send them to the blog instead. p I myself probably would take advantage of the ability to turn off comments or moderate them at blip.tv. I've always reserved the right to just that with any post on my own website (which is where I consider 'official comments' need to be placed :-P ) Yes. I don't get why people are commenting on blip and sharing links to the video directly on blip. What happened to the blog permalink? I think we've got to keep that. That's what makes blogs work. It sucks to have a post in one place and a video in another - both of them having separate conversations going on. For example, when I put a video on the new vlog feed or the classic vlog feed (at FreeVlog) I always disable comments and write Comment here with a link to the blog permalink. -- Verdi URL: http://michaelverdi.com/ URL: http://freevlog.org/ URL: http://node101.org/ Yahoo! [videoblogging] mefeedia feed problems
Hi all, I am working on mefeedia this week, and I wanted to ask everyone who has had problems with their feed in mefeedia to send me an email. That will help a lot with fixing the problems. The most common probs are: can't add feed to mefeedia, or there is something wrong with the instant archive. Email me at petervandijck at gmail if you've had any problems with your feed and mefeedia.. include the feed url.. and describe the problem.. Thanks so much! Peter Yahoo! [videoblogging] 1000s of new vloggers coming - it is the time to talk about content
I was just trying out Typepad's new integrated video posting. (http://typepad.videoegg.com/faq.html) It makes posting videos really, really easy. All you do is drag and drop a clip (straight from the camera or saved on your computer) onto the field. Then you can cut it, and then click upload, and you're done. Supereasy. I don't wanna talk about the pros and cons of Flash and all that, but about the content. This means that 10s of 1000s of people now have the easiest videopublishing tool built into their blog software. Some of them at least will try it out. I think that what we've built here over the past year is a really rich way of communicating with video. Forget the geeky stuff. But the *kinds* of videos people here make are amazing. Personal. Real voices. Truth. As opposed to the funny stuff you see on AOL video portal and such. So I think we need to educate. Each of us can be a teacher. And each of us will have 1000s to teach. Go to typepad vlogs and leave comments about the *content* of their videos. Tell them to be free, speak truth... It's not just typepad by the way. Livejournal. Myspace. And others. Video is finally happening. And I want people to realize the power of this medium.. the stuff we talk about here.. But I do think we've created something unique here. And now's the time to spread the word. That's what I think, sorry for the evangelizing :) Peter -- http://mefeedia.com Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Most low income households are not online. [videoblogging] Re: 1000s of new vloggers coming - it is the time to talk about content
I wrote this (in the excitement of having just tried the typepad thing) before reading the latest posts, and yey, we're already talking content. Here are some of the most important things in my mind (they are very basic): - you have something to say. Try the videoblogweek for yourself and at first, you'll feel like what can I have possibly to say. Then you realize everything is interesting. - it's about connecting people and speaking truth. Vlog what you really believe. It's a great exercise in not becoming the fake person, the corporate drone you always feared of becoming. I think people become that way because they just lack the practice of saying what they really think. - small cameras (the elph for example) work fine. It's not about the gloss. - as you becom better, you can do most editing while filming. - make sure to always put your url at the end of a video. You don't know where it might end up. Eh, I think I might post these on my blog :) P Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Get Bzzzy! (real tools to help you find a job). [videoblogging] Re: iPod reviews ( Mefeedia question)
MEFEEDIA QUESTION: I was wondering about the Mefeedia thumbs. Is there any reason why one or two of my videos might be skipped when the thumbnails are made? At least one of my videos always seems to be missing. I can't figure it out. The reason was probably this: until yesterday, mefeedia was running on a 20$/month shared host. The generation of thumbnails was very slow, and running way behind, so I had to skip many movies in order to keep up. Since yesterday, it is running on a shiny new dedicated server, so it will start catching up. Your old movies will slowly, over the following weeks, have thubms generated for them. http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/mefeedia-users/ is a good place to keep track of what's up with mefeedia, by the way :) Peter -- http://mefeedia.com Yahoo! [videoblogging] Starting a conversation about money
I'd like to start an intelligent conversation about money. Right now, I am moving Mefeedia to a dedicated server. That costs some money. And more imnportantly, I am spending a lot of time on it. So I'm thinking about ways to perhaps turn it from a hobby into a business. The same issues arise for blip.tv, ant and other businesses, so feel free to add to this conversation guys. I think if we can have a conversation here, then perhaps the vloggers can steer the future into a path that they like. So that'd be cool. So here's 1 idea I am playing with. Let's say Mefeedia can get your vlog accessible on the PSP, and through the PSP users paying a fee or something we make some $$, and give you a % of that, maybe half. Only if you opt-in of course. That way you get more viewers, and make some $$ of it, and Mefeedia makes some $ too for making the deals and the software to make this possible.. You would still have you videoblog wherever you want, nothing would change, all you need to do is opt in at mefeedia to allow this. Would that make sense? Good? Evil? This is just one crazy idea, I'm just trying to see what people think about things like this.. Cheers, Peter Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Get Bzzzy! (real tools to help you find a job). [videoblogging] crazy blinkx rumors
I don't think Mefeedia would never do anything intentionally malicious. Let's wait and hear from Peter and Blinkx. I'm at this information architecture conference (this is my day job), but let me try to asnwer the question. Also feel free to email me at any time, my email is on the mefeedia homepage :) Mefeedia does NOT have a deal with Blinkx. So this is not true in any way, shape or form: Blinkx and Mefeedia have a deal for Mefeedia to distribute other peoples content to Blinkx. NOT true. I have never talked to the Blinx people, never met them. Mefeedia produces 1000s of RSS feeds (every tag has an RSS feed for example), and anyone can use those. The only deal we have is with I/ON, the open source and free desktop aggregator: they use our directory, and I'm quyite proud of that. It's an example of 2 small projects working together. There's no money or contracts involved in that, there's no exclusivity. I think that's a good thing for videoblogging. Mefeedia is still a hobby project, even though I am putting in my time and money, and even though VC's call me all the time. If I ever sell out I'll be sure to let you all know ;) So yey, I hope that answers any questions people may have. I'll take some more time tomorrow.. I totally understand people being sensitive about where their videos are used. I always make a point of it to provide the links back, and if your vlog is listed in Mefeedia and tagged then there will be hundreds of links to your website from mefeedia. People have told me that Mefeedia is actually their number 1 referrer, I try hard to find ways to send traffic to vloggers and to get you all more viewers.. that's the whole point. If anyone has more questions, feel free to ask them here, email me (my email is on the mefeedia homepage), or call me at 646-549-1513 (USA). Hope that helps.
