[videoblogging] creating del.icio.us tags with posts

2005-11-13 Thread duncan speakman

So I'm wondering if there is a way to create del.icio.us tags when you
actually make a post rather than having to publish then go and tag
it?
(also I've removed my vlogroll from my site, don't take it personally
people, it's been replaced with my del.icio.us tags which i think may
be more useful, and anyway. how many referrals did you ever
really get from my sitesee! )

Do you recieve a referral bonus for either of the links you posted?
410word.com redirects to cashbackalliance.com with a different PID than

2005-11-13 Thread Randolfe Wicker

You're a vlogger when you zoom in on streams of
water cascading over a rock's edge to try to capture and share that special
experience.

You are a vlogger when you capture the setting sun
playing special visual tricks on passing dying leaves through a bus's window
just to see if you can capture the moment.(And you actually do!)

You're a vlogger when you think you can capture
those exciting seconds when a plane you are in descends to the ground and trees,
cars and speed become full size again---and the video captures only the
twinkling light majesty of the big city below and the strange transformation in
the sizes of cars and buildings...but totally fails to
capture the great audio of the engine's deafening roar and the
physical sensation of being thrown forward as the engine reeves in
reverse.

You know you are a vlogger when you regret not
filming that "Alaska" Jet you pulled in next to at the Airport with the big
picture of anEskimo painted on its tail.

Being a vlogger is being alive with wonder and
wanting to share it with others...

[videoblogging] Michael Verdi: The numbers behind the numbers

2005-11-13 Thread Randolfe Wicker

I had to chuckle when I read Petertheman's
comment:"Michael Verdi has over 7000 (!)
subscribers (because new users aresubscribed to his feed by default), but
"only" 6706 views. Sosubscribers doesn't equal to people
watching."

I chuckled because I have
downloaded and saved all the Freevlog tutorials on my PC. I still pull
them out if there has been a few days since I vlogged to make sure I do
everything correctly.

I play them on my PC,
freeze the video as I do the task and then continue. I jokingly told
Ryanne that sometimes I felt like she and Michael were roommates of mine since I
viewed them so often--especially when I first started
vlogging.

So, there are numbers
behind some numbers. I know that I am probably on 6 or 8 of the 6706
views. But since I have watched each video a few times since
downloading--even playing them for friends since they play more evenly from my
"saved" version--my small numbers should be multiplied by ten at
least.

If many did as I did,
Verdi would really have something like 67,060 views. Oh, we can play such
games with numbers.

I don't care what they do now. I don't trust that company. The only
reason they stopped was that they were getting bad PR up the wazoo.
Nobody at Sony Corporate stopped to think about the implications of
installing software without full and honorable disclosure to home users.

Will Sony re-claim all of the copy protected CD's? Will they make it
easy for non-technical users to remove that crap? Can you call them on
the phone for an answer? The answers lie between the letters N and O.

On the videoblogging side - if the technology is improved so that they

them from preventing anything they perceive as a threat to their
business, including content creation by non-MSM producers and vloggers?

[videoblogging] Re: Video on the new iPod

2005-11-13 Thread Steve Watkins
Cheers, but I disagree.

Lets forget the technical explanations, a practical test will
determine the reality. Use a DV cam to video something square. Is it
still square when you view it at 720x480 on a computer? Is it still
square when you convert to ipod using qt703 ipod export? Is it square
on the ipod's screen?

I dont think its splitting hairs because black bars onthe ipod are
annoying, things at the wrong aspect ratio are annoying, and no
videoblogger wants to do it wrong for ages and then have to go back
later and reencode perhaps hundreds of clips.

Steve of Elbows

 Steve,

Don't mind the debate at all...

Agreed, that DV is a non-square pixel format (as opposed to the
screencasts I referenced
which were made with Snapz using a square 3:2) but in the NTSC world
it is a 3:2 aspect
ratio. The ratio of height to width is 66.7% for 720x480. Now, PAL
DV is a 5:4 aspect ratio
 at 720x576.

So what's going on is constraining (Chris Bevan has a neat little
web app: http://
 chrisbevan.com/projects/podsize#c that demonstrates this). When
you contrain DV NTSC
within it's native aspect ratio of 3:2 (a square version would be
720x540 which is 4:3 no
contraining necessary as that factors down to 320x240) by taking the
width down from
720 to 320 and multiplying by .667 you contrain the height
(letterbox) to 213.

Now, all this does really split hairs on a device that sits well in
the palm of your hand and
unless your pie charts are looking like egg charts, it really is
hard to tell.

[videoblogging] Re: Sony adding root kit spyware hacker tools to your computer (no joke!)

2005-11-13 Thread Steve Watkins
They may well end up making it easy for non-technical users to remove
this stuff, they already released a patch that deisables the stealth
side of the code that viruses are exploiting.

The disabling of PC cdrom/dvd is a technical mistake, not deliberate
behaviour. As I said before there are 2 issues here, DRM in general
(which far more companies than Sony support, including Apple) and the
technology used, which in this case was badly designed rubblish which
has cost Sony dear. Anti-DRM people can rejoice that crappy
implementations such as this do real harm to the DRM concept in
general, even though theres plenty of other DRM stuff around that
never gets any bad press because its not technically flawed like the
Sony thing.

Sony deserve what they get in this case, which is now involving at
least 6 lawsuits against them around the world.
Suggesting theres nothing to stop them hampering non-MSM content using
similar techniques, is a step too far for me. Why would they do that?
The logic behind their flawed DRM attempts was very simple, to protect
their own CDs and thus the revenue from their music label. It doesnt
imply anything else, and they have included Rocketboom in their latest
PSP-software for the PC, so I see no evidence that they are
anti-independent-content-creators, theyve just been overly
protectionistic in one field o their business and will probably have
to think hard before trying such things again.

Im sure this isnt thew first case of CD-protection gone wrong either,
we've been here before in recent years.

[videoblogging] Re: New to the group and catching up

2005-11-13 Thread Gena
Oh man. I just took a look at the front page. I am going to assume you
really are asking an honest question. Here is my honest opinion:

1. Anytime I have to submit information to find out more information
about a company that wants to sell me a service I see it as a red
flag. Your email address has a value. You are a point of contact and
if thay can't convince you to do business with them they will sell
your name down the line in a sucker's list.

2. This is a videoblogging site. I'm sure we will deal with wireless
video issues but radio is not the same as video or videoblogging.
Having said that, there is an implied sense of urgency on the panels
on the page that only x amount of wireless cell radio whachamacalits
are left. Act now! Another red flag.

3. Part of what podcasting and video blogging/podcasting is about is
the removal of gatekeepers that control the access to content. You
don't need to spend $300 to produce a program. If your content is good
and you market yourself/your program you will be successful. It is
more than creating content.

You have to understand the medium and the users of that medium. That
is called learning the business. There is no short cut. This sounds
like a franchise business sales pitch. Not dissing legitimate
franchises, just the bad ones. If this is about targeting the cell
phone user market then this is not the place for the question.

3. Spotmagic seems to be some kind delivery service for
broadcast/cable programs that want to have additional content for
their viewers and who collect info for those programs. That's okay, no
objection but i didn't see anything that related backed to the other
company.

I think this is not worth the money. Take the time to learn about the
realities of podcasting/videoblogging/videopodcasting.

I do respect the right of companies not to have their products ripped
off. That is not right. However DRM is mutating into absolute control
over the user's behavior. I don't need or require their help.

And I don't think I'm being too far out on the idea that at some
future point DRM is going to affect how people are going to create and
display content with the same tools used by MSM creators.

Soon there will be new technology that will for a while stop the
pirates from extracting or recording. Will they think about the wide
reaching effects before they impliment said technology? They didn't
this time. They won't next time.

Will that new technology also stop me from creating/recording my own
content? I'm not paranoid, just a little pyschic or psycho. ;-)

Re: [videoblogging] Michael Verdi: The numbers behind the numbers

This is a little screwey if you are counting views using FeedBurner's stats.
Views according to FeedBurner is how many people have clicked through
to the original blog post and passed through FeedBurner's redirect in
order to be counted. So its more like, how many people watched a video,
read a post, and then decided to travel back to the original.

A rather misleading stat if you ask me...

only 6706 views. Sosubscribers doesn't equal to people
watching.

I chuckled because I have
downloaded and saved all the Freevlog tutorials on my PC. I still pull
them out if there has been a few days since I vlogged to make sure I do
everything correctly.

I play them on my PC,
freeze the video as I do the task and then continue. I jokingly told
Ryanne that sometimes I felt like she and Michael were roommates of mine since I
viewed them so often--especially when I first started
vlogging.

So, there are numbers
behind some numbers. I know that I am probably on 6 or 8 of the 6706
views. But since I have watched each video a few times since
downloading--even playing them for friends since they play more evenly from my
saved version--my small numbers should be multiplied by ten at
least.

If many did as I did,
Verdi would really have something like 67,060 views. Oh, we can play such
games with numbers.

Can you explain to me the purpose for using Delicious to tag your own stuff?
Is it because you are trying to make it findable for others?
Wouldn't that be better accomplished using an open tagging spec like
Tachnorati's.
That way your tags are more likely to be picked up and spread aroun
the web rather than confined in Delicious.

Re: [videoblogging] creating del.icio.us tags with posts

2005-11-13 Thread Joshua Kinberg
Delicious is not an aggregator, spider, or search engine. When you tag
something in Delicious, it lives in Delicious. There are APIs and
other ways to get information into and out of Delicious, but its
mostly dislocated from your blog... that's why people have developed
hacks to post their delicious links onto their blogs to create
so-called link-blogs.

In this case though, you are not trying to add links to your blog,
rather your are trying to add your blog entries into Delicious so they
can be tagged and thud somehow more findable. That's perfectly
useful... but useful only really to Delicious users and not to other
services.

The tag spec put forth by Technorati isn't really owned by Technorati
at all. Its just a way of creating a keyword link and referencing it
as a tag, so you can easily tag your blog posts at the point of
creation by including links with the following syntax:

a href=http://some.tag.space.com/[tag]; rel=tag[tag]/a

The Tag Space can be any URL ending in the Tag Keyword, for instance:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology
- or -
http://technorati.com/tag/Technology
- or -
http://del.icio.us/tag/Technology

are all valid tag space for the tag keyword: Technology

The tag doesn't really need to live in Delicious, it lives on your
blog out in the open so any service that crawls your site -- spider,
search engine, aggregator, etc. -- can discover the tags and know that
the author of the content (you) has attached these tags to it.

Hope that helps explain a little bit...

-Josh

Technorati should notice the tag regardless of where the URL points.
It should be fine to use wikipedia links as tags since the URL
structure is the same as that of a tag space. In fact, the wikipedia
example is given in the description of relTag on the Microformats
wiki.

[videoblogging] Video guides needed.

2005-11-13 Thread Randolfe Wicker

I noted Petertheman's comment that:

And of course popularity doesn't mean you're good
:) I always go tothe end of the popularity list in Mefeedia, like
here:http://mefeedia.com/feeds/pop/1050/, and subscribe to the *unpopular*feeds. There are some
real pearls there.

This is exactly the reason I want to
develop a Vlog Digest. I find I pick vlogs when I recognize a name that I
know produces good ones. However, I am always finding vlogs that are
little gems posted by people I never heard of.

We need "columnists" who direct us to vlogs
about music of a certain type (1980s or Hip Hop or Classical), others who focus
on tech stuff, others that specialize on visual arts, etc. The Vlog Digest
could direct you to vlogs of a type you want to view.

You'd get to know certain compilers whose

The need for "guides" and reviewers is

Why don't some members on this list share
with us a link to a specific vlog (especially one from an unknown vlogger they
have discovered). How many save the link to specific vlogs they like
whether they download them or not onto their computers or Ipods?

Okay, this comes up again and again and again. You all have blogs. When

[videoblogging] Understanding Blip TV stats

2005-11-13 Thread Randolfe Wicker

I just discovered that you can click on "Stats"
under your dashboard at Blip TV and you get a breakdown of daily views for a
certain vlog, top referrers (views, sites, users, browsers) and top
browsers.

I find just going to Blip TV and scrolling through
the latest postings is a good random way to stumble on new vlogs of
interest. Does anyone know of other sites where this can be done besides
the well know aggregators?

I like the way you can see the visual with the
videos on Blip TV.

A lot of videographers fail to understand how
important sound is. I bought a new Sony MiniDV camera which actually has
great internal sound but no plug-in for a wireless mike or a mike with a
wire.

I'd make sure that any camera I bought could take a
mike input. That way, you can always improve the sound. Clip on zoom
mikes, etc. just don't make the cut in my opinion.

  Any

  Now,

Also, along the same lines -- I'm using moviemaker and now that I have

Yeah, Josh - you make a good point. The item views stat is really an

We'll be working on a number of media-specific services (podcasting,

Technorati should notice the tag regardless of where the URL points.
It should be fine to use wikipedia links as tags since the URL

[videoblogging] Re: Internet television station

2005-11-13 Thread Gena
What do you mean by Internet Television? From Dictionary.com the
meaning of television is:

The transmission of visual images of moving and stationary objects,
generally with accompanying sound, as electromagnetic waves and the
reconversion of received waves into visual images.

   1. An electronic apparatus that receives electromagnetic waves and
displays the reconverted images on a screen.
   2. The integrated audible and visible content of the
electromagnetic waves received and converted by such an apparatus.

Analog TV - we are of the Digital generation. We do things different here.

The industry of producing and broadcasting television programs.

Do you want to set up a multi-channel videoblog?
Or do you want to replicate traditional television into an Internet
format?
Or do you want the means to pre-select content from around the world
and view it at your leisure?

Not trying to be funny. I just don't understand the question.

Even though I'm not a technical person, I saved the
link because it thought my technie friends would "get a kick out of it" or tell
me "I had been had" and it was a clever ploy by commercial
interests:

Watch it and tell me. I should have remembered the

like that. The repeated spelling of delicious with the dots in just the
right places made me suspicious..and made me laugh.

 http://stevegarfield.blogs.com/videoblog/vlog_soup/

I'm up to seven episodes and highlight videoblogs that I like.

Take a look if you haven't seen it yet.

I checked out some of your other videos and must
say that some certainly lived up to your theme of "most extraordinary". I
added the filming of the butterfly emerging from the cocoon to my "best nature
vlogs" files.

I never realized that the butterfly emerged and
then hung there like that while its wings grew/filled out. You should put
some text with your vlogs. You can do that at blogspot. It would
make people more likely to explore.

Take this entry: URL: http://www.solitude.dk/archives/20051105-2354/
Both links (teletext and philosopher) are tag links pointing to thetags Teletext and Kierkegaard respectively.
oh you're such a tease, how could I not go and look at a post that contains both 'teletext' AND 'kierkegaard' in one entry!

Re: [videoblogging] creating del.icio.us tags with posts

2005-11-13 Thread Joshua Kinberg
i don't quite understand the tagging thing yet, when you say 'open tagging
spec' why is technorati more open than del.icio.us ?
  it's not

In terms of a specification for creating tags on open web pages, yes
Technorati is more open. You don't have to be a technorati user to
create tags. With Delicious, you must be a Delicious user, thus giving
Delicious control of all your data which may not necessarily be a
bad thing, just something to be aware of.

Is this a standards thing between the two that technorati is winning?
  no way

It doesn't really have to do with winning/losing

  ... plus del.icio.us actualy works

Delicious just works differently. I enjoy and use both services, but
they exist for different use case scenarios. Delicious is a Bookmarks
Manager, plain and simple. Technorati is something else, somewhere
between a search engine and conversation tracker.

This is exactly what Del.icio.us is great for! It is a place you can
go to bookmark and tag links, and then see links that other people are
tagging and bookmarking. Sometimes people bookmark links to video
clips. You can see what videos are being bookmarked by delicious users
here:
 http://del.icio.us/tags/system:media:video

At FireAnt we are developing our own tagging system that is more
specific to videoblogging.

[videoblogging] Proposition: Official Monthly Meetup Schedule

2005-11-13 Thread Susan
Hiya all!

This may have been suggested already in other circles, and forgive me
if it has... I know we have node101 doing some stuff, and we are the
media doing some others...

We should set up a monthly meetup schedule, and it would work like
this: each month's meetup would be the last weekend of the month, and
everyone would know that a certain month would be in their city. For
example, San Antonio could be the October meetup each year, and Santa
Barbara could be the November meetup each year, and New York City
could be the April meetup each year (coincide with vlogger con), etc.

Thoughts? I think this would be a great idea to allow people to plan
to visit new places and prepare for meetups! Oh--and we'd all have to
go to Michigan to see Josh in the summertime.

:)

2005-11-13 Thread Gena
So it sounds like you are looking for a web host to upload store
your videos and then use Broadcast Machine to distribute them (RSS =
Channels in Broadscast Machine speak) via Bit Torrent.

For free video web hosting you can try:

http://blip.tv/
http://www.dailymotion.com/
http://ourmedia.org (currently having problems accessing so make this
#3 to try out)

[videoblogging] Re: creating del.icio.us tags with posts

2005-11-13 Thread LeanBackVids.com
As a WordPress user, which do you recommend?...

http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/Technorati

I'd like to make sure that my blog posts show up in Technorati's
tagging system automatically (or with the least amount of work). I'm
already pinging their services, but I don't see my posts under
skiing or snowboarding.

Any other WP users have a preference? Thanks.

In this case though, you are not trying to add links to your blog,

  services.

Delicious is a bookmarking service. It's for and foremost a way for
you to
organize your bookmark and secondly a way to share bookmarks with
others.
Systematically adding your own works to your own delicious account
sort of
defeats the point of sharing bookmarks. It smells a bit of 'gaming the

that's
why I'm not a fan adding your own entries systematically to delicious.

The tag spec put forth by Technorati isn't really owned by Technorati
at all. Its just a way of creating a keyword link and referencing it
as a tag, so you can easily tag your blog posts at the point of
creation by including links with the following syntax:

Lately I've been trying to remember to mark any links I make to
wikipedia
as tags. This is nice when Wikipedia has an informative entry, but I
still
want Technorati to notice that I'm talking about a given tag. It's all
 good. :o)

More specific question... I've got a couple of tags set up and each
using skiing and snowboarding, but the posts still do not appear
in Technorati. Is there a delay? Note, I went back and added these
tags to old posts. Hopefully that does not matter.

[videoblogging] stretching 320x240 in final cut express

2005-11-13 Thread pettisb
Dear Video-Bloggers,

I'm just beginning to learn final cut express and I imported some
320x240 avi's from my sd300 and edited them and then exported them and
they turned out all teeny-tiny. It is like they didn't stretch to the
whole screen but stayed 320x240 and then when I exported they went to
160 x 120.

Here's the movie to watch and see what I mean:
http://www.imakethings.com/?p=437

I'm also interested in resizing videos and putting multiple videos in
the same frame. Anybody have any tricks or tips to help me with
resizing videos in final cut express? Maybe these two questions have
the same answer!

Thanks

Bre Pettis

[videoblogging] Re: stretching 320x240 in final cut express

2005-11-13 Thread LeanBackVids.com
The left video window is called the Viewer and the right one is the
Canvas. Just above the Canvas are three little buttons. The right
button has an option for Image+Wireframe. This will allow you to
move and resize the video. If you want multiple vids, just add a new
video track and resize/move that too.

As for the sizing issue, make sure to check the Final Cut dropdown and
click the Easy Setup option. You'll want something like DV-NTSC. To
confirm, check the size of your video in the Canvas at 100% rather
than Fit to Window or Fit All. If that isn't the issue, then it must
be in your export settings.

Note I'm using Pro so it may be a little different in Express, but I
doubt it on these two.

2005-11-13 Thread Brad Webb
I'd personally add us (vSocial, URL http://www.vsocial.com/) to that
list as well. Our RSS feeds have enclosures of the original, uploaded
files -- plus we transcode for m4v -- which can be distributed in the
same or similar manner, plus we have easy and compatible embedded
features for your blog or wherever else you'd want to put 'em. Still not
sure specifically what the original commenter was looking for, though.
