Re: [Videolib] Jane Otto's C article.

2016-08-03 Thread Maureen Tripp
Scott, thanks for suggesting this article, "University Faculty Describe Their
Use of Moving Images in Teaching and Learning . . . ".
It made me think that, apart from my regular and active clients, I don't know
very much about faculty actually use moving images in their teaching. I would
be interested in your faculty survey results, as well.
Did anyone else who read the article find her last paragraph disturbing?

"The largest issue, however, may be that faculty video users appear to be
falling away. If libraries are to survive as players in this arena, they will
have to redefine themselves. They must reexamine their relationship to YouTube
and other online video sources. Are there ways in which libraries can
facilitate access to the heavily used resources they don't own, and never will?
Will they choose to compete with online providers or identify new services to
complement those of the Internet video sites? Libraries should stake out their
territory, marshal their resources, focus their efforts, and get the word out."

Anyone have any ideas on specific ways we can go about staking, marshalling,
focusing, etc?
Maureen

Similarly, in Spring '15 to capture some case studies as part of a streaming

[Videolib] audio recordings of poets/writers reading their work?

2016-05-24 Thread Maureen Tripp
Well, fresh off the streaming rights for tv series discussion, here I am with
another question . . .
much less controversial, I'm sure--
We had many spoken word audiocassettes in our collection, and I'd like to
replace them on CD. But I'm having trouble finding sources for them.
I can find some collections and a few individual poet collections on Amazon,
but much of what we had--Audre Lorde, Kurt Vonnegut, and others--are not there,
or anywhere that I can find.
Any suggestions?

[Videolib] streaming rights for TV series?

2016-05-17 Thread Maureen Tripp
Would like some feedback on the following scenario: The complete first season
of All in the Family is part of the library's media collection. A TV writing
faculty member wants to show a single episode to students enrolled in an online
course. The faculty member would borrow the DVD from the Library, take it to
media/instructional services and ask that it be digitized and uploaded to an
internal streaming service so that it could be streamed via a course management
system.

However, if this TV writing faculty member wants to stream more than one
episode, then the fair use analysis would weigh against fair use, and they
would need to seek streaming rights.

And speaking of streaming rights for TV series, does anyone have any tips on
how to proceed?
Thank you, Collectively Wise Ones.

[Videolib] using short films for an online class

2016-04-05 Thread Maureen Tripp
A faculty member will be teaching an online class on the short film, and wants
to use (obviously) a bunch of short films as part of the class. Meaning she
wants to post them online.
We have many of the films as part of DVD collections we've purchased--for
example, Academy Award Nomanated Short Films, or Best of Resfest.
It's my understanding that these films are complete works, and therefore can't
be used in their entirety online.
But it's proving very difficult to find out who owns the rights to all these
films--is there any possibility that I'm wrong, and that, as portions of a
collection, a case could be made that using them online is like using parts of
a complete work?

We have a robust intercampus loan system here at Mason between our 3 campuses.
I don't think it takes more than 2 days for an item to get from one campus to
another. So faculty can request the item.

Also, second copies of high use items for another campus are purchased.

Rhonda and all,

Deg and Jo Ann’s process is similar to the one that I am researching at GMU now.

As part of the research process, I have compiled different 500 notes for
expressing Sec. 108 conversion. If anyone is interested in this list, let me
know.

Additionally, compiling a public site on ALA Connect about our best practices
on Sec. 108 is a project that I have been hoping to start up. It would be
simple: just needs someone to do the data entry and create the links.

If anyone is interested in developing a Sec. 108 best practices links list,
please contact me so we can discuss!

Rhonda: I will email you separately with more information.

At the University of Connecticut this is the process we follow. Since it is
labor intensive and time consuming we invoke section 108 sparingly.

1. Determine if the VHS is damaged, deteriorating, lost or stolen.

2. Document damage, deterioration. This checklist developed by Kenneth
Crews useful for ensuring i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed.
http://copyright.columbia.edu/copyright/files/2009/10/copyrightchecklist108preservation.pdf

3. If found to be damaged/deteriorating, conduct due diligence search for
evidence of new VHS or DVD for sale at a reasonable price. We use this
checklist (Creative Commons license), http://aladinrc.wrlc.org/handle/1961/16025

4. If no new VHS or DVD is found for sale then a DVD is made from the VHS.

[Videolib] anyone know a source for Fear on Trial?

2014-12-08 Thread Maureen Tripp
We have a copy on VHS, but I'd like to upgrade to DVD.
However, I can't find a copy available for purchase in any format.
It's a 1975 made for TV movie, with George C. Scott.
Any leads much appreciated!

the issues.
Doug and Elizabeth, you are certainly strong advocates for your principles, but

going to make or break anyone's academic experience.
I hope when we all meet up again in real life, at conferences, workshops, etc.
that we can . . . well . . . get along.

[Videolib] pornographic films in the Library collection?

2014-11-14 Thread Maureen Tripp
A faculty member is planning a new class for the spring--Sex in the Media.
Guess who gets to order his new, pornographic DVDs? So . . . my question for
academic media librarians out there--do you include materials like Behind the
Green Door, Vintage Stage Films of the 40's and 50's and Russ Meyers' Abundant
Beginnings (collection) in your catalogs?
Apart from my general squeamishness, I wonder if having these titles in the
collection might be disturbing to other students who find them demeaning to
women, or perhaps even perceive them as warranting trigger warnings.
So . . . does anyone include porn in their collection? If yes, under what
circumstances, and do you treat them any differently than any other collection
item?
thanks,
Maureen

[Videolib] do any academic libraries out there share your media collections with faculty teaching at external program locations?

2014-09-05 Thread Maureen Tripp
Hi Everyone,
A faculty member wants to borrow 10 DVD and VHS titles for the fall semester,
for use at our L.A. campus.
We've never had a request like this before, as the program is relatively new.
I don't like the idea of 1. tying up stuff for an entire semester (usual length
of loans to our faculty is 2 weeks)
2. shipping this stuff across the country
Some of these titles could be leased from Swank, but if we set that precedent,
it could run into big bucks!
What do you all do/think?
thanks,

A question for the collective wise ones: Several times instructors with deaf
students in their classes have contacted our disability services people, who
then contact us, and request that media be captioned. Usually this is done for
vhs tapes, but sometimes for dvds that don't have close captioning or
subtitles. The disability office wonders if, once these materials are
captioned and transferred to a dvd, the Library can catalog them as captioned,
and keep them in the teaching collection.
Faculty would be able to locate them through the catalog, and could use them in
face to face teaching.
What say you all?

hi Richard,
We have had a circulating DVD collection in open stacks for several years now.
The DVDs are given LC numbers. We don't separate the discs from the cases.
We've had a bit of theft, but not anything horrific.

Hi Richard,
We opened our DVD collection in 2005 when we only had a few hundred films. Our
collection has grown to a little more than 4,000. We keep them in a space with
our popular collection.

We label all of our DVDs with an LC call number. The call number is placed on
a DVD case for browsing and a paper disc sleeve for storing in a cd cabinet.
We keep the discs in the cabinet behind the service desk and the DVD cases get
shelved in open browsing cabinets. The discs in the cabinet behind the desk
are filed by call number. The browsing cases are shelved by the first letter
of the film title. So anything with a title that starts with B will be in
the B section, not in alphabetical order. So, they pick a case, bring it to
the desk, we use the call number on the case to locate the disc and put it in
the case for checkout. We don't worry about security since the discs are
stored behind the desk.

I will warn that is is a very labor intensive/time consuming way of doing
things. I think we spend more time shelving/pulling DVDs than anything else at
the desk. We had space and financial issues that prompted the move in this
direction. I looked at the Browser Pak product and determined it would be too
costly for us. We already had the cd cabinet so we were just re-purposing an
empty cabinet. We did move to an extra slim DVD case for browsing purposes to
save space. I have been very happy with the paper sleeves that we use. They
are practically indestructible.

Overall, it seems to work but could be better. I just haven't figured out a
better way yet.

From Filmakers Library

High Heels and Ground Glass
This fascinating film portrays the life and work of five outstanding women
photographers, born around the turn of the century, who perfected their
craft in an era when photography was a man s domain. Using examples of
their photography with clips from news of the day, their on-camera
interviews are woven together to tell a story about life for professional
women living in turbulent decades of the middle of the twentieth century.
Gisele Freund, a reporter-photographer describes her harrowing escape from
Nazi Germany with negatives taped to her body. Fashion photographer Louise
Dahl-Wolfe recalls her evolution from a young art student to the creator
of Harpers Bazaar covers. Maurine Loomis was a little known but highly
successful photographer of Hollywood stars. Lisette Model, the teacher of
Diane Arbus, reveals her method for making a successful photograph. Eiko
Yamazawa practiced her art in Japan for over seventy years with the
elegant eye of an abstract painter. These dedicated women share their
successes and struggles with candor and warmth.

From Cinema Guild

Words of Witness
Follows a 22-year-old female reporter for the independent newspaper Egypt
Independent , as she covers Egypt¹s transition to democracy, from the
heyday of Tahir Square to Egypt¹s first free and fair presidential
election. Defying cultural and gender norms as well as family
expectations, Heba takes to the streets to report, using Facebook posts,
tweets, and text messages, on an Egypt in turmoil. The film offers a
fascinating account of Egypt post-revolution as the nation faces the
challenges that lay ahead; as well as a moving portrait of an incredible,
fearless young woman, who is now a contributor to The New York Times.
Heba¹s story is an illustration of the critical role social media played
in the Arab Spring, as nations are in the process of reinventing
themselves and finding their voices.

From Women Make Movies

No Job for a Woman
Before World War II, war reporting was considered to be absolutely no job
for a woman. But when the United Staets entered the war, American women
reporters did not want to miss covering the biggest story of the century
so they fought for and won access. But there was a catch: women reporters
would be banned from the frontlines, prevented from covering front page
stories about generals and battlefield maneuvers, and assigned woman's
angle stories about nurses and female military personnel. Several women
reporters refused to abide by these journalisti conventions and military
restrictions and, instead, brought home a new kind of war story; one that
was more intimate yet more revealing.

Saddam Hussein and Dan Rather, and Nixon on Meet the Press.
These recordings are on VHS. A lot of this material, like coverage of 9/11, is

I also wonder about the ethics of doing this. We would keep these DVDs for

This is a shout out to all of you video/media/audiovisual librarians... Could
you please tell me what you call your library or area of the library or college?

The background is this - since the College's existence in 1964, we have been
called the Audiovisual or AV Library. I am the Audiovisual Librarian and we
have an Audiovisual Administrative Assistant. However, we have just had a
renovation of the entire library, and the Audiovisual Library has been left off
of the new signage - we are not in directories, and there are no individual
signs. No one knows where we are now that we have moved location!!

The reason seems to be that the administrators of the College think that
Audiovisual is a dated term. They would prefer something sexy, evidently, but
they don't know what. Actually, I think that the administration would be
happiest if we went entirely to streaming!! We in the library still have a
number of video tapes, cds, and many dvds which are heavily used by faculty and
students. And we have viewing equipment.

One proposal is Media Services - tho that has a bad connotation here on campus,
as that used to be the department creating media productions and delivering
equipment on campus. It had a poor reputation. Multimedia Services is taken
by our IT department. I personally would like to keep Audiovisual Library but
I don't think that our Library Director is going to go with that. Could you
please tell me what you are called, or if you have any ideas for sexy,
forward-thinking titles?

Thanks so much!!

At the CCUMC conference last week in Las Vegas there was an excellent workshop
on VHS Retirement: Strategies from Multiple Institutions. Also discussion from
a variety of perspectives from going analog to digital as well as discussion in
the Collection Development and Management Interest Group. Our proceedings will
be online shortly. This may be one way to begin, that is, to get a variety of
perspectives and strategies.

At our institution, we are not removing VHS/DVD players from our classrooms.
We still have a number in stock when one goes, we replace. We too have a large
VHS collection to support. Slowly, I have been replacing our most popular
titles on DVD or streaming whenever possible. It is a slow task and also an
expensive one to say the least. This is a much larger transition than when we
went from ¾ to VHS because VHS has been in existence much longer and the
titles were relatively cheap so our collections blew up in size.

I would encourage you to have VHS players on hand for faculty to check out to
take to the classrooms to connect and use as needed if they indeed are being
removed. You can try to ask IT to keep them in the rooms as long as they are
operational. When they die, that's when they replace them.

Consider going to CCUMC next year as I'm sure it might be helpful in dealing
with these issues. The conference will be held in Chicago.

Subject: [Videolib] Confronting a campus wide VHS DEATH Deadline

Greetings,

I have an issue of which I would like some advice. Recently, our IT
department (bless 'em) for our university announced that as of May 6 of next
year it would be pulling all VHS VCR players out of all classrooms, including
dual (DVD/VHS) players and would no longer be supplying or supporting any of
these players. DVD could still be played on the existing classroom
instructor's computer of course. The bombshell was dropped on the faculty.

To be sure, we have long been living with the long, slow death of VHS, and we
(or at least I) have expected this death to be a lingering one as far as the
library is concerned anyway. We have a significant collection of VHS tapes
still and have about a dozen players in the library to play them. We have been
slowly replacing the collection with DVD (no Blu-Ray), but still have some
heavily used VHS titles.
I certainly understand the IT department's point of view, especially
considering our cash-strapped state of late. They are looking for ways to not
pay for or maintain unnecessary equipment. VHS is a likely target.

However, you can imagine the effect this announcement has had on our faculty
when they were suddenly told that that if you have VHS tapes that you show in
your classes, you will need to find replacements by May 6, 2013. IT also
mentioned the coming analog sunset, which has evoked memories of the dreaded
Y2K of earlier times (remember that apocalypse?). VHS death went from a
lingering, gradual one (to which we seem to be slowly adapting) to a quick
bullet to the head. Actually, it's more like a bomb tossed into a crowd at
the moment.

We are getting frantic requests to digitize VHS tapes or replace everything
with DVD and streaming as well as a general perception of what do we do now?

Obviously, this is a perfect opportunity for our library to sweep in, calm all
nerves, gently explain the situation to faculty and administration, and save
the day as the information/video/media professionals that we are.

Still, I was hoping to get some input from other media librarians out there who
are or have been through or into this lately.
How are your libraries handling this? By this I mean transitioning between
VHS and DVD and (in our case at least) facing an institution that is now
declaring an entire format obsolete and un-usable by early next year. Of
course it involves copying issues, collection development, streaming, and you
name it. At the very least it means the library taking a leadership role (and
producing a working plan) to get the institution through this great transition

Subject: [Videolib] Big Picture Cataloging Advice

Hi Videolibbers,

I have a brooding sense that I really am about to ask a pretty dumb question,
but this is generally a fairly forgiving listserv. So here it is: our
cataloger (i.e. mainly, our media cataloger) has just retired. It’s never an
expeditious process here to get a position filled (I’m thinking 6 months). In
the meantime, we’re continuing to receive media. In terms of cataloging
knowledge, the rest of the librarians (including myself) are worthless, and
though we have a paraprofessional she does only copy cataloging and no media.
So, do I have any other options besides waiting? I know a lot of places
(Midwest for example) provide MaRC records, but in truth I’m hoping there might
exist something more “robust”. If not, is it worth the effort for someone here
to learn media cataloging if in all likelihood they’ll be replacement for my
retired colleague… eventually.

PS –I think they do a consistently weak job of teaching cataloging (in library
school), but I also blame myself for not taking it seriously enough.

So, after that, I decided to ask them to catalog the FMG items. They say they
can, but I must prioritize-should they concentrate on cataloging the physical
media items that we have waiting (several thousand, due to alumni donations) or
the FMG collection (also several thousand titles).

There's talk here of getting rid of the media desk, and merging it with the
regular circulation desk, in an attempt to same money on the staff budget.
I don't like this, but I'm not sure why.
We have two collections--one which circulates to students, and I'm sure that
could be handled at the circ desk.
But we also have a teaching collection, which is booked for faculty in
advance--or, which happens often, faculty can call us and book titles on the
spot. These videos don't circulate outside of the Library, except for use by
faculty in classes, or for faculty preview.
It seems to me that having two service desks is a good idea, to relieve stress
and congestion. But I don't have any evidence for this, and I'm a committee of
one, the only Media Librarian here, and thus, I have a vested interest in
keeping a separate media desk.
Has anyone gone through this? Does anyone have any ideas pro or con for
merging media operations with the print circulation desk?
Any help/feedback would be much appreciated!

[Videolib] thanks for all the help with my Swank question!

2010-09-13 Thread Maureen Tripp
As Sandra Jackson said, it seems it depends a lot on the film, anticipated
audience size, and other factors--but I now have a ballpark range of
estimates--I appreciate it, everyone!

[Videolib] swank

2010-09-10 Thread Maureen Tripp
Can anyone give me a ballpark figure on what it costs to rent a film from Swank
for non-admission charging campus viewing? Just an estimate?

[Videolib] new copyright rules: effects on student work?

2010-07-29 Thread Maureen Tripp
The exemptions are worded so carefully that I wonder if non-media
students--Writing, performing arts, or Marketing students, for example, would
be excluded from this exemption, unless they were taking a film/media class.
I'm assuming Journalism and Communication could be covered by media studies.
Any insights into the impact on student work--embedding clips into projects,
etc?
Thanks, wise ones.

[Videolib] looking for video docs on printing

2010-05-04 Thread Maureen Tripp
Has anyone seen anything in the documentary area, or industrial film area,
that would take us inside a printing plant where books are manufactured?
The ideal film would show something about paper making, and then, inside the
printing plant, a web press and a sheet fed press, folding of signatures into
pages, gathering of signatures into the book block, printing the cover or
jacket, and gluing or sewing the cover on.
While I'm on the industrial kick here, a similar question: We could use a film
on how digitally driven warehouses work. At the Ingram and Amazon warehouses,
for instance, where millions of titles are stored, the fork lifts are robots
that can pick and pack titles for bookstores. Our publishing faculty would
love to see something like that!
