Setting the Picker in Reminders and the Rotor
Hi Folks, I am running IOS 6 on a iPhone4. I just tested the picker with the different rotor settings. First, there is an adjust value in my rotor setting that allowed me to change the date and time. However, the rotor settings that I could not change the picker was language, vertical, and headings. If you have the rotor set to any of these, it may be causing the problem of not being able to set the picker when creating the reminder. I haven't had any problems with this function here, but had some difficulties in the app store changing the picker when attempting to navigate to the next app in the search mode. HTH. Voice over, while on a call
Hello, I am using an iPhone 4S and IOS6. When I am on a call, and have to access menus, I have the phone on speaker. But it is impossible to hear voice over. This did not happen in IOS5. Also, if another call comes in while I am on a call, I can't hear voice over to end plus answer. Is there a fix, or any suggestion is appreciated. Maria, This app is no longer available in any store. :) Apparently it was pulled a while ago and no one knows the reason or at least I do not recall anyone providing one. Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale
Hey if any of you are even thinking about this, I am throwing in my support for the Take COntrol books. You will not regret spending your money on any of these titles. Even if I am familiar with the topic, I have found information useful to me. THe books are all written in a way that makes them easy to understand, pleasant to read, and keeps your attention. Obviously everyone learns differently, but I think most users will appreciate the books. And hey you cannot beat the price at 50% off. So, go check it out and for the record I am not affiliated with the company or any authors. My comments are my own and all that good stuff. Thanks for sharing Esther. On Sep 28, 2012, at 8:37 PM, Esther mori...@mac.com wrote: Hi All, The Take Control ebooks, one of the great sources of information for the Mac and iOS devices, are on sale for the end of September with a coupon code of CPN20921SEPSALE (without the quotation marks) that will give a 50% discount when applied at check out up through the end of September. These books are DRM-free, and are available in both PDF and ePub versions. Furthermore, once you purchase a book, which generally lists for $10 or $15, you can get all minor version revisions free and re-download alternate formats from your account, and often you can get a discount on the new major version of the eBook. I'm cc'ing this to the viphone list, because some titles, such as Take Control of iTunes or even Take Control of Switching to the Mac, may be of interest. For Mac users, titles such as Take Control of Apple Mail in Mountain Lion, Take Control of Using Mountain Lion, Take Control of Troubleshooting Your Mac, Second Edition, Take Control of the Mac Command Line with Terminal (for learning to use Terminal and unix concepts), Take Control of Backing Up Your Mac, and Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network, Third Edition (for general Wi-Fi setups and use) might be of interest. These guides are very hands on and practical; some of them have information that I've never found anywhere else. If you log in through their special anniversary sale link, the coupon code should get filled in automatically. This URL is: http://tid.bl.it/september-sale-mountain-lion Alternatively, if this web page is busy, you can go to their catalog page: http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/catalog You can browse the Take Control titles in iBooks, if you have an iOS device, but the discounted price and the ability to download alternative formats and be informed of new, free, updates is only available for purchases made through their web site. I'll put in a few sample direct links to specific books on their web site: • Take Control of iTunes 10: The FAQ, Second Edition http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/itunes • Take Control of Apple Mail in Mountain Lion http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/mountain-lion-apple-mail • Take Control of Using Mountain Lion http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/mountain-lion-using • Take Control of Switching to the Mac http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/switching • Take Control of Backing up Your Mac http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/backing-up • Take Control of the Mac Command Line with Terminal http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/command-line • Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network, Third Edition http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/airport-n There are also good guides for GarageBand, third party apps such as Scrivener. Re: Using Reminders with IOS 6
Here are the steps I used to setup the reminder. 1. Tap on Add Reminder button. 2. Enter name for reminder. 3. Tap the More Details button. 4. Tap on the Remind me on the Day button which by default is off and this needs to be on. 5. Locate the date/time, (i.e. Saturday September 29, 2012, 6:00) (swipe to the right from the aforementioned button) and tap the date which will now be reported by VoiceOver as being selected. 6. NOTE!! I understand the problem now so read this carefully. Once VO reports the date as selected, you need to touch the lower 1/3rd of the screen. You will find the day, hour, and minute pickers. WHen you encounter a picker you flick up/down to adjust. NOTE: I did notice that at least on one occasion if I took focus away from the date/time pickers it seemed to revert back to hidden for a lack of a better description and I then had to select the current date again. This was a little random, but generally the pickers seem to remain. I hope that helps. Flick to the right until you hear the text edit field and double-tap on that. Input whatever the reminder text should be. You may not have to double-tap on the edit field. 4. Double-tap on the done button located in the upper right corner. This will bring you back to the first screen. 5. Find the newly created reminder and double-tap on it. This will open the details screen. 6. Under the reminder text, there will be 2 options; one for day and one for location. Double-tap on the one that meets the reminder text criteria. In the case of being reminded on a day, double-tap on Remind me on a day. These are toggle buttons. 7. When the date is shown, it is the current date and time. Double-tap on the current date field. This will place the date at the bottom where you are able to use the picker to change the date, and time. 8. When you are finish, double-tap the done button located in the upper right hand corner. RE: Voice over, while on a call
Hi Jan, If you look for Voiceover volume in the archives you will find that this has been discussed quite a lot a few days ago. This is a bug and there is currently only one good solution/work-around for it and that is to use a headset. I find on my 4S that if I turn down the call volume as much as it will let me (this doesn't seem to work properly either since I was able to turn it down lower before) and then turn Voiceover up to 100% using the volume rotor I can hear Voiceover when it's fairly quiet around me, but it's definitely not great. I suggest you add your voice to that of those of us who reported this to accessibil...@apple.com and hope that they can fix this in the next update. Re: Siri
You will need VoiceOver to be on for this. When you say something and she misunderstand you tap the text she thinks she heard and manually wake edit it. Also try asking her something like : Send myself a message. Maybe this will do it. Also say : Siri, I an an say your name. Good luck. Re: Navigating by heading bug perhaps and email issue
Hi James, Yes I got to a certain spot on the page, and it began reading to me the headin and link and then it just jumped up the page a little bit, it's like it lost focus or something. So I tried it again, and in order for me to go to that particular link, it read it, I had to quickly double tap and then it took me to where I wanted to go. Maybe it was just one of those weird things that just happened at that time. I'll try it again, and see what happens. I then hit back and moved back and forth by headings and it was fine. When you say you have to look for it and then double tap quickly, do you even mean if you find it with your finger on the screen it won't even stay there then? So I had to find it again, and quickly tap on it to go to it. So I didn't know if this was a bug maybe? RE: SIRI and relationships
Tom, Let's assume your Dad is John Rasch and you do have him entered under that name in Contacts, you would activate SIRI and say John Rasch is my father. SIRI should come back and ask Do you want me to remember that John Rasch is your father? Rely with Yes or No or tap one of the buttons You can then press and hold home again and say Yes after the SIRI tone or double tap on Yes. However, keep in mind that unless you use iCloud to store your contacts this will not work. If you use gmail, Hotmail or Exchange SIRI will come back after you confirm and tell you that the addressbook you are using does not support this feature. Apple in their typical way of ignoring anything not Apple never did point this out during any of their Keynotes when they showed off this feature. Because of this limitation relationships are a useless feature for probably 95% of the world. RE: IPhone 5 Cases
Hi Anthony, Keep in mind that I am not saying this to disagree as everybody has to decide which case to use and I have at this point not upgraded from my 4S and maybe won't. However, I stopped by one of our local electronics/cell stores yesterday to take a look at the iPhone 5 since I was just curious how it feels compared to my 4S. Strictly on features it's really not worth upgrading, but I really had to tell myself this because after I had it in my hand I wanted to just go online and order one. My 4S is a very nice phone, but the way the 5 feels is stunning, I can't believe how much thinner and lighter it feels even though it's less than one eighth of an inch thinner and less than 1 ounce lighter. The difference in length despite having a half inch larger screen is just shy of 3/8 of an inch and insignificant. This is one super nice phone and I understand the reviewer whose article was posted here a few days ago and who said that the iPhone 5 is the nicest thing he owns. Having said all this, I'd try and find the slimmest case possible for that phone and half the time would probably use it just as it is without anything. Re: Is SiriusXM On Demand accessible, and if so how do you get to it?
Hi Kevin, I have the same question. If I had to speculate, it seems that this feature should be accessible on the iOS app. There is a series of unlabeled buttons on the bottom of the screen. One of them takes you to what looks like the interface where on demand should be available; However, since I'm not subscribed to the on demand feature, all I hear for each show in this list is Upcoming guide only. There's supposed to be a 30 day trial of this feature, but unfortunately, as most things with sirius, finding pricing info, and signing up for the trial seems to be more complicated than it needs to be. I spent a few minutes earlier trying to figure this out on their website to no avail. I may break down and call them at some point. Honestly though, if I wasn't such a big NFL fan, and din't enjoy their football coverage so much, I'd be long gone. Everything they do is poorly designed, clunky and frustrating, but that's a rant for another day. Take care, Al On 9/22/2012 11:27 PM, Kevin Minor wrote: Hi. I was listening to a show on my XM radio, when I learned that it was on demand, and you could listen to it any time you wanted online with your computer or on your IOS or Android device. My question is is it accessible to VoiceOver, and if so how do you get to the content? I suspect that you do this through the SiriusXM app, but I'm not sure where to look. I sure hope VoiceOver users can access this new feature, because as things stand now I stay up in the wee hours of the morning to catch what's new in the XM countdown of pop tunes, and it would be nice to listen to this at a more decent hour. Re: Cellular usage data question
Tethering is when you use your phone as a wireless hot spot to get on the internet with something such as your computer or another device. In my understanding, if you do not do this then there is something inaccurate about those statistics you are looking at. Hopefully if I am missing something someone will add to it or correct if necessary. Jim On 9/29/12, Hope Paulos hope.pau...@gmail.com wrote: Hello all. I am running an iPhone 4S with iOS six. Re: Using Reminders with IOS 6
Hi Scott and others, Scott's suggestion did the trick for me! It is certainly confusing and without this list I don't know If I would have figured out how to get to the picker to change the date and time. The difference from iOS 5 is that now after tapping on the date you can not just flick right several times to the picker. you must touch the bottom part of the screen. Also if you flick left past the day button and reach the delete button the pickers disappear . This has confused many of us as I have seen this question emailed to me from non list members using the podcast on Applevis.com. thanks Scott for finding a solution. Until this is fixed I suspect many Voice Over users new to the app will not figure it out and likely give up on the app. I know I almost gave up on it under iOS 5 and it was easier to find the pickers then. Eric Caron On Sep 29, 2012, at 6:15 AM, Scott Howell scottn3...@gmail.com wrote: Here are the steps I used to setup the reminder. I hope that helps. iPad questions
Hi everyone. I'm going to be getting an iPad soon, and I have a few questions. I understand that there are some gestures which are iPad specific. Where can I specifically learn about these? Is there anything else I should know in terms of screen layout for apps like settings, the app store, or any apps which come standard with the iPad? Lastly, I'd like to get a speaker dock which will accommodate the iPad. I realize that I have an abundance of bluetooth options. Re: Verizon LTE is a battery hog.
The screen curtain doesn't do anything to save battery. And, this is why Apple didn't put LTE into the 4s. The chips and radios available last year were even worse. RE: Verizon LTE is a battery hog.
I agree. It's kind of vague when people make that general of a statement. But, getting back to your original post, I also notice it, but I don't think it's anything that needs to be worried about, as that's most likely a symptom of LTE chips, seeing as they do require more power to run. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Richard Turner Sent: Saturday, September 29, 2012 3:39 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Verizon LTE is a battery hog. You were waiting for a bus and did some light news checking and browsing--is that for 2 minutes or 20 minutes and did that continue while on the bus, etc. It is hard to gauge if we are talking about real battery drainage issues, or what without knowing how much time resulted in 10 percent battery use. RE: iPad questions
The biggest thing probably to get used to are the containers on the iPad. They're basically frames on the screen. Other than that, and for a few exceptions such as pinching, four finger swiping, etc. gestures are the same. If your need isn't immediate, I would perhaps suggest waiting a few extra weeks to see when or if Apple's going to introduce their mythical iPad Mini sometime in October. The iPad's great and all, but in my case, I find myself more often than not going to my iPhone for most of my tasks that don't involve being out and about and using my iPad more like a laptop just because of the size of the screen you need two hands instead of one. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Allison Mervis Sent: Saturday, September 29, 2012 1:58 PM To: Viphone@Googlegroups.Com Viphone@Googlegroups.Com Subject: iPad questions Hi everyone. However, I'd like to be able to physically dock the iPad so that I can charge it while listening to books, watching movies, etc. Thanks so much. Settings, General, Accessibility, voiceover, rotor. There you'll see a lot of options such as characters, words, headings, speech rate, etc. To add one of these options to the rotor, you have to double tap on it so that the option says selected and double tap to unselect the same. You can also drag the selected items to arrange how you want the options to show up in the rotor when doing this action. You are correct. Actions is not amongst the settable rotor options. Actions is like typing mode. Because it only appears in a few places, actions is automatically added to the rotor when it is available. ARTICLE: ATT's off-contract iPhone 5 can be unlocked with an easy reset
ATT's off-contract iPhone 5 can be unlocked with an easy reset Off-contract ATT iPhone owners can skip waiting for the carrier to unlock their smartphones (Credit: Josh Lowensohn/CNET ) One would think that if you bought an iPhone 5 at full price and off-contract that it would already be unlocked. Apparently, that is only partially correct. While Verizon sells Apple's next-generation smartphone at full price already unlocked out of the box, that is apparently not the case with ATT. Normally, ATT customers who opt to pay the full $649 price instead of agreeing to a two-year contract for a subsidized iPhone must follow a lengthy process to get handset unlocked. Those ATT customers must fill out a Web form, send a fax to ATT, and wait as long as a week for word on whether it will allow the device to be unlocked. However, it now appears that unsubsidized ATT iPhones ship unlocked and that off-contract customers can save a lot of hassle and time by simply restoring the device in iTunes. This little bypass was first reported by Tech Crunch, which says it confirmed the process with ATT technical support and successfully reset an iPhone 5 with a T-Mobile SIM card, getting the usual unlock message: Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked. iPhone users can confirm the unlock by swapping in another GSM-compatible SIM card, Tech Crunch's Romain Dillet explained: After receiving the notification my new iPhone was unlocked, I cut a micro-SIM card into the shape of a nano-SIM by using the ATT SIM card that was already in the iPhone 5 as a guide. The most difficult part was to make it narrower so that you can close the tiny nano-SIM tray, though some have reported that this step may be optional. In a couple of seconds, the iPhone was able to pick up the T-Mobile network, and calls and EDGE data connectivity worked as expected. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. article: iPhone 5 honeymoon over already?
article: iPhone 5 honeymoon over already? week in review Owners of the new smartphone find a litany of fault with the new device, while Apple grapples with map miscues. CNET News: After just a week on the market, the iPhone 5 has owners writing up a laundry list of faults with the new device. Soon after the iPhone 5 went on sale last Friday, users started filling up discussion forums and social networks with reports of scratches and nicks on their brand-new phones. People say they've noticed the defects around the aluminum band surrounding the phone, with the issue more visible on the black version of the new iPhone. Those complaints don't appear to bother Apple. Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color, Apple Senior Marketing VP Phil Schiller said in an e-mail, according to 9to5Mac. That is normal. Apple seems much more taken aback by the flap over its iOS 6 Maps app -- so much so that CEO Tim Cook on Friday took the startling step, for Apple, of issuing a major mea culpa for falling short of delivering the best possible experience. We are extremely sorry, Cook wrote, for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better. But back to the iPhone: A purple halo also seems to plaguing some iPhone 5 owners, reportedly occurring on photographs if you aim your iPhone 5 camera toward a bright light source such as the sun or an incandescent light. If you then move the camera so the light source is off-screen, a purple halo effect can be seen through the camera. That effect also shows up on any pictures that are taken. Users are also complaining of lines of static appearing across their keyboard as they type. But the problem seems to occur only when they enter their passwords at the App Store or iTunes store. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: article: iPhone 5 honeymoon over already?
Well it would seem that all of those listed are quite minor. I have to say in my opinion of course, but I really, really think the press is absolutely grasping at anything to cast a negative shadow over the IPhone 5. They really, really seem to try hard to do that. I have heard the new Samsong phone came out with much more impacting functional issues and also cracked plastic right out of the box. RE: [Maccessibility] Apple Continues Tweaking iOS AppStore
So does apps which have been returned mean something like apps which search has found? I don't get what apps which have been returned means? To me, a return is taking something back after it's been purchased. This doesn't seem to fit with AppStore purchases, which can be deleted and a refund request be pursued. Re: Action rotor/new delete option inconsistancies
So what some are taking issue with here and how it works is how the feature is implemented right now and not a bug in how it is performing. People need to understand that. If you want it to work differently that is a feature request. As has been mentioned, it is available where the delete gesture is available for sighted people within built-in apps and features, not in third party apps. In the built-in apps it does not do the same thing on all screens because the delete gesture for the sighted people does not either. At this point the Action rotor setting is not present when in the list of Podcast episodes for a Podcast I am subscribed to. The Phone app: Here the Action menu is available in the Favourites list, a single finger flick down or up will put me on Delete and a double tap will remove whichever Favourite I am on. I still have to tap on “Edit” at the top, then tap the delete button beside the call I want to delete, confirm that I want to delete it and then tap Done at the top right. The Contacts app/Contacts tab: No deleting a contact in this new way. You have to open the Contact, go to Edit, go to the very end and double tap on the delete button there. The Messages app: I can delete a conversation in the main list view, but if I go into that conversation, the Action rotor is not available to delete individual messages in the conversation. I can clear all messages by going to Edit and then tapping Clear All at the top left or I can double tap one or more messages in a conversation and then double tap the “Delete 3 messages” in the bottom left where 3 is just an example, it will indicate however many messages you selected. Re: SIRI and relationships
Hi all, As usual, I found a way to cheat. Tell Siri something like, call my brother. She will then ask you who is your brother? The you can tell her your brother's name and she will add the relationship. If I remember correctly, it also worked when I said, Call my brother Lewis. Then she asked, Is Lewis Frank your brother? yes, and she added the relationship. I did the same with my wife and my girlfriend. Just kidding about the latter. siri, please tell me the number for local undertakers. Tom, your not dead yet. No, but I soon will be. Now that this is mentioned in every document I read about what you can do with SIRI I tried it again and at first it seems OK, I tell SIRI the relationship and she asks “Do you want me to remember that so and so is your brother”. I tap Yes and then get the following message: The addressbook you are using does not allow me to change this. I am using 2 cloud services for my contacts. For personal use I use Windows Live Hotmail and for business use I use Microsoft Office 365 which is full hosted exchange. Adding relationships for contacts I have in either contact list results in that same message. I am curious whether somebody who uses Google for storing contacts gets the same message because if that is so Apple is offering a SIRI feature which is useless for just about everybody except those who use an Apple @me.com email where I assume this will work. I am not syncing my contacts via iCloud although I guess I could try that, e.g. turn of Contacts in the Hotmail account and turn it on in iCloud. I am not sure if this will screw things up and if anybody has ideas, suggestions or experience with this I’d appreciate any feedback. It’s not like being able to tell SIRI who my Mom or my brother is would completely make my day, I can still go into Outlook and put in “Mom” or “Brother” as a nick name and then I can say “Call Mom” and it works. I am also mystified by what is supposed to be a new ability of SIRI. I read an example where they say “So and so is my favourite comedian”, can’t remember what name they used. So, I just told SIRI “Shania Twain is my favourite country singer”. SIRI replied “I see”. Then I asked “Who is my favourite country singer” and SIRI said “I don’t know”. Does this mean I have to add Shania Twain to my contacts first not withstanding that my contacts can’t have relationships associated with them? I wish Apple would put some useful functionality in SIRI like “Redial the last number that called me” or “Turn Bluetooth on” instead of coming up with gimmicks that don’t work for anybody who is not using Apple services. this But Regards, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Yes, I agree. In fact, it can easily be argued that the honeymoon is still in its early stages. Re: article: iPhone 5 honeymoon over already?
And because any successful company such as APple has to be busted down. After all, the media just can't stand having so much success--it doesn't sell airtime. The reason all of these other devices receive so little criticism is because those companies simply do not have the success rate as does APple. Although what is more interesting is when Ford or some other company has a recall with failing fuel lines etc. and you hear much less news and there is a case that impacts the user's actual life. :) On Sep 29, 2012, at 6:15 PM, James Mannion mannion...@gmail.com wrote: Well it would seem that all of those listed are quite minor. This is an example of FUD gone wild, fear, uncertainty and doubt. It's amazing the stuff the media runs with. PBS App
I just downloaded it this afternoon and when I opened it it keeps acting like it is downloading something but it just keeps doing it. Does it take that long for the app to open up? Updating iPad 3
Hi, Just wondering if I should upgrade my iPad 3 to iOs 6? I've read some things where there some bugs perhaps, just like with the update to the phone. So thoughts? Thanks. Re: IOS 6 Voice Over Question
Hi. Honestly, I've never used the South African English voice, or Tessa as she's called, because I haven't found a way to once she's my default voice, download the premium voice. I have plugged it in and still get the compact version of her. To be honest, and correct me if I'm wrong, I think the only premium voices you can download are Samantha, Karen, and Daniel. If anyone found a way to actually download Tessa and the Irish English Moira voice, I would love to hear it. -- Shawn Sent from my white MacBook using SamNet -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group.
