How do you rename your device so it shows that in the source list? Right
now my iPad Mini just says iPad, but I would like to put my name there
instead. Anyone know how to do this?

When you open IBooks for the first time, you're presented with the library.
This is where your books are organized. If you have books already, simply
pick a book and double-tap to open it. With speech, you can begin reading the
book by using the two-finger-downward-flick gesture. To pause and resume
speech, you use the two-finger-single-tap. With speech VO will read
continuously and turn pages as it goes. If you close IBooks in the middle of
a book, it will retain your place when you open it again. You can always find
the library at the top of the screen to choose another book.

With Braille, you have to pair a Bluetooth display. Unfortunately you do have
to turn pages manually with Braille by using dots 1-3-5-space for next page
and dots 2-4-6-space for previous page.

At the top of the screen are controls for Ibooks. When you go into the

It isn't clear to me from your description where you were looking. Were you
at Christianaudio or in the iTunes store under apps.
Did you look at the iDevotional app itself which contains My Utmost for His
Highest. It costs $9.99 and I also would be a bit hesitant to buy it
without knowing if the items in it are accessible. But I suppose the only
way we will know is to have somebody buy it unless somebody has already done
so and can report on it. From the description, it accesses Morning and
Evening and My Utmost for His Highest. I could be wrong, but I don't
think it's an app from within which you must buy other things so I'm not
sure what the mention of things that cost $14 each refers to. This is why I
am thinking maybe you went to Christianaudio directly instead of the app
store but I'm not sure. Be careful because I think there's a music app by
the same name. Here is the link:

Hi Robin,

Well, this topic has just become of great interest. we have a security
system from Time Warner Cable. It's a an older system, however the newer
system supports an App for the iPhone. I spoke with a rep tonight and we
tried out the app on the call and it appears to be VoiceOver accessible. We
are going to meet with a rep soon to discuss its uses and I may either
purchase the new system, or perhaps switch over to ADT, we'll see how it
goes. I'm interested in the thermostat functions. I have a talking
thermostat already, but I'd be interested to know if I could control that
remotely.

others to set up the timing of outside lights going on and off for me.

I’m glad to say the app works well.

Re: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Rob Harris
Ok, you have to imagine this like the old radio dials, the tuning dial for
example. You'd hold it between finger and thumb, and twist it.
So you try to do this on the screen, hold your fingers a bit apart like
you're holding one of those twist knobs, put finger and thumb on the
screen, then twist, you might have to take fingers off and put them on to
twist it some more, but it will take you through all the options. You can
twist either way, it will go right round back to the beginning eventually.
Knowing what you're on can offer a short cut, though they seem to appear in
a more random order than they used to; not a good feature.

By all means. lol. It wouldn't be the first time I was wrong, and I'm fairly

this has translated into more battery life for the VO user over say

Re: Read2Go Braille Question

Hi Mark.

I have not testet this in read2go, but it works in other reading apps, where I
have the same problem.

If you add vertical navigation to the router and choose that option when you
will have to start reading again, I hope it will work. You choose the vertical
navigation in the router and press spacebar dot 6 on your braille display or
one of the other commands that lets you do the command on which the router is

Best regards Annie.

Re: Keeper app for storing passwords -- how to enter the master passsword?

2012-11-05 Thread Kimber Gardner
That's what I ended up doing though I suspect there is some way of
giving it alpha characters.

It's a pretty nice app, especially if like me, you can never remember
your various passwords. I have a half dozen passwords at work and
countless more in my personal life. This app allows you to organize
them in folders like work stuff, social media etc.

The only issue I've encountered is while filling out the fields for
each new record, when you double tap a field to edit, sometimes the
cursor doesn't move to the new field and you end up typing additional
stuff in the prior field. It was quite frustrating until I realized
that if I tapped save and went back in to edit the record, I could
then get the cursor to move to the field I wanted.

I think I will be emailing the developer about this issue because
other than that I like the app very much and will upgrade to the paid
version if that problem is addressed in a future version.

the book by using the two-finger-downward-flick gesture. To pause and resume
speech, you use the two-finger-single-tap. With speech VO will read
continuously and turn pages as it goes. If you close IBooks in the middle of
a book, it will retain your place when you open it again. You can always
find the library at the top of the screen to choose another book.

With Braille, you have to pair a Bluetooth display. Unfortunately you do
have to turn pages manually with Braille by using dots 1-3-5-space for next

Hi there,

The lock switch is just above the number four key. You slide it to the right
to lock it and to the left to unlock. It is kind of stiff, so you may have
to use a good finger nail.

problem and knows of a work around, I'd really like to hear from you.

RE: Software update

This was the case in 6.0. I wrote to accessibility about this bug, but they
denied to me that it was ever different. Guess it is not a priority for
them. I still am struggling with iTunes, which does not show anything it
should on the computer, so I would need sighted help when this bug kicks in.
Thank goodness I have not had to use home and on/off. Someday, I need
someone to get on phone with me and fix my iTunes. Then it will be a
non-problem since accessibility doesn't seem to think it is a problem.

Did you look at the iDevotional app itself which contains My Utmost for His

without knowing if the items in it are accessible. But I suppose the only
way we will know is to have somebody buy it unless somebody has already done
so and can report on it. From the description, it accesses Morning and

think it's an app from within which you must buy other things so I'm not
sure what the mention of things that cost $14 each refers to. This is why I

Showing physically isn't that easy either when a person can't see. You can't
exactly do it easily while somebody is touching your hand or force their hand

where we have another blind person around to show us and from what I understand
the gestures sighted people use are somewhat different. At least, none of my

RE: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Alex Stone
Cheryl, I completely agree, I would find it very difficult to demonstrate it to
someone. I’ve always described it to people as like turning a knob with two
fingers.

Showing physically isn't that easy either when a person can't see. You can't
exactly do it easily while somebody is touching your hand or force their hand
through it, or at least i can't. Besides, a lot of us don't necessarily live
where we have another blind person around to show us and from what I understand
the gestures sighted people use are somewhat different. At least, none of my
sighted friends can do their gestures with vo on.

Re: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Søren Jensen
I have trained lots of blind, visually and fully sighted people how to use
Voiceover on an iPhone and iPad, and I have a huge success on showing people
how to turn the rotor.
If people don't understand my explanation, I usually take their hand, carefully
place their fingers on the screen and turn the device slowly so they can feel
what it feels like. Then I hold the device with one hand so they can't move it,
and them I take their hand again, and slowly turn their hand so they get a more
natural feel on how to do it.
People use that jesture differently, and the trick is to figure out what works
best for them. You can use whatever fingers you want. The device don't care. :)
Just make sure you're only using two fingers.

VIA and Recently Added Aps

2012-11-05 Thread Ralph Supernaw
Hi,

I can no longer get VIA to list the most recently added aps. If I swipe
right through the options until I hear, Recently added aps and doubletap,
I go to the ap categories screen. If I run my finger down the screen to
list the options, recently added aps is never listed. Can anyone help me
with this?

Thanks

I have setup my iphone to synch via wifi to itunes running on my

I have added several new cd's to itunes on my pc, but can't get my
phone to synch any more.

It keeps saying that it will continue synching when my pc becomes

Also can't figure out how to turn off synch via wifi so I can synch

Any thoughts gratefully appreciated.

Re: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The key is that you need to have two fingers on the screen moving in
opposite directions. Try placing the iPhone on a flat surface, so you
can use both hands if you want, now place two fingers on the screen, one
near the left edge and another near the right edge, about an inch apart.
Now move those fingers in the opposite direction, one from left to right
and the other from right to left. This should give you the roter
gesture. This may be a bit cumbersome to do all of the time, but once
you have it working once, you'll be able to practice it until you get
comfortable using some simpler methods.

Yeah, I have a friend who can't do the rotor gesture. She has tried and

the description in the iPhone book from NBP and I've tried to describe
it several different ways but she just can't seem to do it.

open an application. I use the rotor the way that I kind of flick with
both hands the opposite ways. It is not very practical. I know it is
 doable using one hand only.
Please could you try and explain what I might have been doing wrong
and how to get it working using one-hand gesture?
I hope my question does make sense.

I finally figured out how to enter a search passage in to the search field of

syncing notes from my computer to my iOS devices

2012-11-05 Thread Marcy Weinberg
Hi, everyone,

When I make a note in the notes app on any of my iOS devices, it syncs to the
notes.app on my MAC with no problem. But when I make a note in the app on the
MAC, it doesn't sync anywhere, not to any of my devices.

I've tried turning off and on notes in system preferences/iCloud, and signed
out and then in again to iCloud in the same place.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks!

VoiceOver bug concerning filenames

I appeared to have uncovered a new voiceover bug. If the file name starts with

filename as a telephone number and you cannot open the file as an attachment

how have you worked around it? Thank you for your help.

Re: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Steve

That sounds more like a pinch gesture.

I use the rotor by imagining a small knob like a volume control on a radio.
I put my thumb and foreginer together and twist left or right.

Pages on Ios question

2012-11-05 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi, I intend to look up the recent podcasts on Pages, but in the meantime, I
wondered if you could answer a couple of questions for me.
Is it possible to use the dictate function when working in Pages?
When a document is saved, is it possible to rename it so it can be given a more
meaningful name?
Many thanks!

RE: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone

2012-11-05 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
I use the rotor the way most people do.

I Have just tried this new approach to see if itw would work, and it does 2 out
of 3 trials, without much practice, at least for me.

I hold the phone in my left hand with my left thumb over the screen, at about
the 9 o'clock position, and my right finger over the screen at about the one
o'clock position.

I touch the screen simultaneously with my left thumb (1 o'clock) and right
index finger (1 o'clock) and gently move my right index finger down, from the 1
c'clock position towards the 5 o clock position.

For me, the rotor activates and changes 2 out of 3 tries without ever having
tried this before.

It may help. Worth a try, any way.

Best, Keith

2012-11-05 Thread Rob Harris
I don't think i'd have trouble demonstrating as such, though this is going
to depend mostly on the comprehension of the trainee.

But you do the gesture on the back of their hand, while it is more or less
in situ with the iDevice, then they try and emulate what they feel you do.
You could step them through quite a lot as you do a gesture relative to what
was heard from VO and the trainee mirrors what you did;and then you get
to pause and see if they make the right gesture and reproduce again as
necessary and so on. Getting into the right angle to use right hand on
right hand for example could be a bit tricky, but this method sounds as
plausible as any.
Trainer would need a light touch so as to not hamper the trainees movements,
but we tend to have a knack of following the movements of a guide lightly
so they're not sure you're still there.

Showing physically isn't that easy either when a person can't see. You
can't exactly do it easily while somebody is touching your hand or force
their hand through it, or at least i can't. Besides, a lot of us don't
necessarily live where we have another blind person around to show us and
from what I understand the gestures sighted people use are somewhat
different. At least, none of my sighted friends can do their gestures with
vo on.

2012-11-05 Thread Timothy Emmons
Hey guys, when I taught my last iPhone class, I taught the rotar this way and
it worked great. The student was able to pick it up quite well, lightly using
the back of the hand as my surface I showed them how to turn the rotar and what
to do and it worked perfectly, this also works for gestures, and tapping as
well. Hope this helps. Thanks.

2012-11-05 Thread reggie.alvar...@gmail.com
Simple way to do the rotor. I put two fingers with a space between them on the
screen. Then I turn the iPhone under my two fingers. After a while doing it
this way, I began feeling the movement and now I can do a little of the
movement with the phone still. I still need to move the phone, but I understand
the gesture.

Showing physically isn't that easy either when a person can't see. You
can't exactly do it easily while somebody is touching your hand or force
their hand through it, or at least i can't. Besides, a lot of us don't
necessarily live where we have another blind person around to show us and
from what I understand the gestures sighted people use are somewhat
different. At least, none of my sighted friends can do their gestures with

as far as?
The clearly of the call for both you and the caller that is hearing you
or when you are in a noisy area and you would like to hear your caller
and have them hear you well also?

also as far as how you would sound to the person that you have called.
Wis one of these two units would give you the best sound or are they
about both the same?
Now for battery life winch one of these units will give me the best
battery life?
They both sound like nice units but I would like to get the best one of
the two.

So any and all recommendations are welcome.

You could step them through quite a lot as you do a gesture relative to what

backing up your entire IPhone threw Itunes

2012-11-05 Thread Casey

hi okay at some point I am going to get the I Phone 5.
I currently have the I Phone 4.
But what I would like to know is once I connect my current I Phone to my
computer with I Tunes running.

How do I 1. Back up all of my phone?
So that when I get my I Phone 5 I can then just threw I Tunes connect my
new I Phone 5 and have all my screens and folders and apps set up just
like they were on my I Phone 4 before I got my new I Phone 5?
I guess what I am asking is how do I make my screens and folders carry
over from my I Phone 4 to my I Phone 5 once I get it it?
I would like to make the new I Phone look the same as my 4 does now with
all of my folders that I have and apps and all of my stuff on my new phone.
So if someone can please paste how to make this happen that woudl be a
big help.

this woudl be my forst time doing this on my own.
So I would like to do it right.
I know that I woudl need to first do a back up of my phone I have now.
So then what is next and how do you back up the entire phone so you
don't loose anything including all the apps tha tyou ahve paid for?

So basically what I would like to do is once.
I would get my new I Phone 5 just be able to connect it to ITunes and
after I disconnect it have it already so I can take it and use it just
like I can with the I Phone I have now.

thank you all and I hope that you can understand what I am asking here.

Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?

My phone company offers a 14-day window where you can get your unit

The new unit has no rattle at all. I'm very happy.

I'm convinced there was something moving around in the older unit that
shouldn't be.

Re: apple tv question

Would there be any point in a blind person jail breaking one? I'm sure none
of the alternative systems have accessibility in them unless it's just the

Did you look at the iDevotional app itself which contains My Utmost for His Highest. It costs
$9.99 and I also would be a bit hesitant to buy it without knowing if the items in it are
accessible. But I suppose the only way we will know is to have somebody buy it unless somebody has
already done so and can report on it. From the description, it accesses Morning and
Evening and My Utmost for His Highest. I could be wrong, but I don't think it's
an app from within which you must buy other things so I'm not sure what the mention of things that
cost $14 each refers to. This is why I am thinking maybe you went to Christianaudio directly
instead of the app store but I'm not sure. Be careful because I think there's a music app by the
same name. Here is the link:

Hi Debbie,

I assume you bought this used? Anyhow, I suggest you do a factory restore
and set it up as a new device then sync whatever music, apps and other
stuff you want on it again, but don't use a backup to restore from as some
issues come back that way.

Hi All

I recently purchased an iPod Touch 4TH Gen which is generally working fine,
except for Safari. It allows me to brows about three or so pages at a time
before crashing and rebooting the iPod. If anyone else has experienced this
problem and knows of a work around, I'd really like to hear from you.

Many thanks.

Facebook App Updated

2012-11-05 Thread Len Burns
All,

There is a new version of the Facebook app that was released in the last
couple of hours. I have not thoroughly sized it up, but thus far I very
much like what I have encountered. For one thing, theinvisible friends
list is now visible! The navigation is also greatly improved. Thus far
I would say huge progress!

Gosh Carla. Thank you ever so much for these. Too exhausted tonight to use
these links, but I will definitely be looking at them tomorrow! Have not
been to iTunes for quite some time due to frustration so I hope they have
not given up on Windows-XP users. Otherwise will wait for hubby to return
from getting his new guide dog and cajole him into putting Windows-7 on my

Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?

2012-11-05 Thread David Chittenden
It depends on the rattle. On my iPhone, if I hold it just right and shake it
just so, I can barely hear a very slight rattle. In my case, it is one of the
volume buttons which I can very slightly wiggle. The movement is less than a
millimetre. As a company, I would not replace such an issue unless my policy
stated that nothing in the product has any movement except in directions that
are specified. Yes, you can acquire products built to that intense of
specifications. And yes, those products are considerably more expensive than
the consumer analog of such products. For example, look at the specs, and
related prices, of the Panasonic ToughBook laptops. They are a couple thousand
more than standard laptops of the same specs.

Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?

2012-11-05 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi David and all,

I agree with most of your comments and have found Apple to be
absolutely outstanding in terms of customer support and level of
service; as you rightly point out, they go far above and beyond what
many other mainstream companies provide, and in terms of
accessibility--well, they're lightyears ahead of anyone else.

In terms of the rattle, I do think it's fair that if a customer is
experiencing something on their phone which is not present on others
(i.e. the display models in the Apple store) then it's only natural to
want a replacement. Yes there isn't anything wrong with the phone's
functionality at present, but, it could be a symptom of something to
come. When you buy a new handset you do expect it to be, well,
perfect, in comparison to other handsets of the same model.

However, when I called Apple they were very very helpful and didn't
indicate that I would have any trouble getting my phone replaced. I
went with my carrier's replacement program only because I wanted to
have a new handset, not a refurbished one.

I am fairly certain that in Canada Apple can charge you for another
handset, ship it out, then credit the charge when your original is
mailed back; but I am not certain of this.

The wonderful thing about he said / she said is it can't be proven either

I do not know if Apple has such a policy, but I do know that they will
repair or replace any product under warranty, and provide way above industry
standard customer service for anyone under warranty or service plan.

The majority of computer company service plans only cover a set number of
customer service/tech support calls. When you exceed that number, you are
charged significant amounts of money for each tech support question.

In my experience, the majority of tech companies will not send out a
replacement product until after they receive the original product.

In my experience, the majority of tech companies only pay freight to send
 product back to me.

In my experience, aside from Assistive Technology specific companies, the
vast majority of tech companies do NOT set up dedicated support toll-free
 numbers for disabled customers.

In my experience with mobile phones, if the phone has a slight rattle in it,
but the phone works properly, no company will replace the phone after the
 initial replacement period.

I've worked for a couple different AT companies in the past. One of the
companies was very focused on customer service. Because this was our focus,
many people complained about our product. We released patches and upgrades
monthly. The more responsive we were, the more people complained. Another AT
company I worked for only paid a little more than lip-service to customer
service. We released patches every few months or longer. This company was
larger, and we received less complaints. And, more people purchased this
company's products. Therefore, the lesson companies should learn is to just
ignore the complaints if you want to grow from a smaller to a larger
 company?

True, in the case that you describe, I very likely would not pay

Agreed; sounds like a non-issue to me. This is all very subjective and
I think we have to rely on our instinct to a certain extent to decide
whether to request service. I believe I have heard that there may have
been certain issues with a couple initial batches of iPhone 5s, but am
not totally sure.

Best thing to do as always if anyone is concerned is head to an Apple

anylist ap is now accessible

2012-11-05 Thread Dave Bahr
Hi, for those of you who use the anylist ap, it is now accessible. I
contacted the developer and he said he would work on it, he did. It now
tells you what every item is, gives you the status of the item, crossed
off or not, and gives you the item details with a button labeled as
such. So, worth the wait and thanks again to Jeff for making it happen.

Re: Some links to some ITunes tutorials I made for a UK magazine

2012-11-05 Thread Carla Savage
Hi Reggie,
I myself use Windows XP service pack 3 with Window-eyes, so there's still hope
for the XP user yet. It shouldn't make any difference what version of Windows
you use as iTunes in itself is the issue here. By the way, I'm currently using
iTunes 10.7. I do hope you find the files are useful.
Take care,
Carla.

Gosh Carla. Thank you ever so much for these. Too exhausted tonight to use

been to iTunes for quite some time due to frustration so I hope they have
not given up on Windows-XP users. Otherwise will wait for hubby to return
from getting his new guide dog and cajole him into putting Windows-7 on my
 machine.

 Hi Folks,
I thought that as some people wanted some help with using ITunes,
then maybe these files would help.
I did a series on the use of ITunes for a computer magazine based in

Re: Pages on Ios question

Hi Kirsten,

Yes, you can dictate in Pages. As long as there is an edit field, you should
be able to dictate in virtually all apps that you use.

Is it possible to use the dictate function when working in Pages?
When a document is saved, is it possible to rename it so it can be given a
 more meaningful name?
 Many thanks!

Re: In the quest of a hymnal ap I found iWorship Plus and it works

2012-11-05 Thread Jesper Holten
Hi.
Yes it works fine. TThere is thus far only one problem I have
found, which is one button not being labeled. It seems to be add song
to playlist. Otherwise it accessible, I can select the different
hymnals, as well as choosing and reading the individual Hymns.
My initial fear was that the Lyrics might not be contained fully on
one screen, and scrolling might not be possible, but I have not found
any Hymns thus far I could not read.

 Dear all.
In the church we attend they use the Celebration Hymnal book in
their service. Finally I came around to see if I could find an
accessible version so that we could follow along and sing the hymns.
In the quests online I found iWorship Plus which contains 11 Hymnal
 books to some extend.
The app is accessible besides one button which is not labeled, and you
can read the lyrics of the individual hymns, and some of them even
have midi files attached so you can hear the Tune.
Unfortunately, the Hymn books seems not to be complete, which is
ashame, but it is far better than nothing. If other hear on the list
hav other solutions we would be greatful to hear from you.
It is as I mentioned the Celebration Hymnal book we use at our
 congrrigation.
Below is the describtion from the app store of iWorship Plus.

iWorship is the most comprehensive hymnal app in the App Store. Access
over 3,000 hymns with MIDIs for you to play and sing along. You can
even search for by numbers from the most used hymnals. Invest in your
spiritual life by having the best hymns ever written always with you.

 _
 SUMMARY

In short, here are the features and content included in iWorship PLUS:

 1) Total songs included - 3,225. This represents OVER 70% of the songs
 from the following hymnals*:
Hymns of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (1985)
New National Baptist Hymnal (21st Century Edition)
 Baptist Hymnal (1991)
 Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal (1985)
 United Methodist Hymnal (1989)
 Presbyterian Hymnal (1990)
 Lutheran Book of Worship
 Celebration Hymnal
 Hymnal for Worship and Celebration
 With One Voice
 Christian Life Hymnal
*Please note that NOT ALL songs in these hymnals are included, only
the 3,225 that have cleared copyright licences.

 2) Includes Lyrics MIDIs for every hymn/song for you to listen sing
 along.

 3) Quick dial search (tap number + 'Go')

 4) Playlist tool for Worship Leaders and Musicians

 5) Easy search (select which hymnals/collections to include).

 6) Full screen lyrics mode for easy singing

 7) Offline access (initial download required for scores and chords)

 8) Download management and appearance settings

What about more contemporary songs? We hear you ask... Well, we are
in constant negotiations with CCLI and copyright owners to release
more songs. However, this is a very complex issue as many songs have
different owners and distributers in multiple countries. As soon as
new songs become available, you'll get a free download with their
 lyrics.

Please send us feedback and don't forget to review this app.

 * Please note that although over 70% of the songs from these hymn
books are included here, NOT ALL the songs have cleared copyright
 licensing.

sprint plans on there website?

2012-11-05 Thread daniel
Hey guys, sorry this is kinda Off-topic, but does anyone use sprint here? And
in your oppinion, how accesible is there website? The reason I am asking is
because it seems that alot of the links I click on either don't do anything, or
take me to a message that says the website is down for maintenance, is this
normal, or is this something that's just been happening over the past few days?
the reason I'm asking is because I'm probably going to get an IPhone next month
and I was wanting to look at there plans and I really didn't want to go into a
store where someone would probably try to get me to buy something I really
didn't want.
Thanks in advance,
Daniel
