RubyMotion and Accessibility

Hi everyone. I just gave a great talk about basic iOS accessibility, as well as
a new iOS toolchain called RubyMotion, which lets you write iOS apps in Ruby.
Check it out.

Re: iphone cases with battery extenders?

2013-01-11 Thread Brett

 Hi,

Yes, they do. I use the Mophie duce pack and it will charge my phone
when flat to about %80. Other wise, I can just leave the case on and the
iPhone will use the cases battery until its dead, then use its own, It
extends my battery life by about two thirds. I find it very handy and
its not too big either.

Cheers,

Brett

Re: Ripped 1 CD into iTunes; got 6 partial albums. How to fix?

2013-01-11 Thread Sherrie
I would suggest that you select all the tracks and then do “Get info” with
control I. It will ask if you want to edit multiple items. Say yes.
Then under the Info tab go to the album choice and put in the name of the
album. I would also make sure you have the artist in the artist space Then all
the tracks will have the same album name and artist listed. Don’t put in other
info unless it applies to all the tracks.
I would then tab back to the Info tab and then over to options. Here you can
say whether it is a compilation, Whether you want iTunes to remember the place,
and whether you want the items skipped when shuffling. There is also a place
here to choose what type of material it is, such as music, podcast, audio book,
etc..

I recently ripped a book on CD and after each CD was ripped (or before if
iTunes could not find the track names) I did this select all, then get info and
put in the name of the album or book. Only in the case of multiple CD’s I also
filled in the Disk number blank of blank disks so they would stay in order. It
worked.

Hi Keith,

Are you sure you are looking under the “More” tab and then “Album”? You might
also want to check “Compellations”.

Most of my musicals, however, do show up as an album, e.g. My Fair Lady, Cats
etc.

Hi,

I ripped a CD of a Broadway musical titled Aida, containing 22 tracks, and
syncked to my iPhone.

On the iPhone Music app, under Albums, there are now 6 albums titled Aida, some
containing 1 track, others containing several tracks, totaling the 22 tracks in
all. Some albums are listed as Ensemble, others with the names of different
people, but not sure if composers, performers, or what. The tracks are not in
proper sequence across the different albums, e.g. on one album is track 12; on
another album are tracks 2, 6, 13, 14,, and 22.

I just want to listen to this album Track 1 through Track 22.

Can anyone explain what happened and why. And, how to get it working in the
obvious way?

Thanks. Keith

Thanks for this info. I had to swipe left to page 4 and then do the Ready

ready to go.

The first time I tried to use the app I stopped on page three to read it and
got stuck there. So I removed it from the app switcher and just swiped
straight through to page 4 the second time. It is really great and very
accessible. I like that it only has aboutabout 6 or 7 apps a day so is not
so overwhelming.

Hi,

When they did a major upgrade a while back, they added an introductory
screen. It's been a while, but I think I had to swipe left with three
fingers a few times to get through it, or possibly turn off VO and slide one
finger to the left three times. But I could be wrong about the direction.
The final screen has a Continue button or some such. Once you double-tap
that, the welcome screen never comes up again, and the app is accessible. I
use it all the time. And when you find an app you like, double-tap. A screen
opens with a Free button that takes you to the app store, or in the rare
occasions when it doesn't work, you can use the Go to the App Store button
near the bottom of the page. It's a really great and accessible app.

Best,
Anna

RE: Ripped 1 CD into iTunes; got 6 partial albums. How to fix?

2013-01-11 Thread Richard Turner
Welcome to the biggest headache when importing CDs into iTunes.
What happened is that the tracks are tagged with different artists, usually
to point out who are the soloists on each of those tracks.
It is best to do this before you import, but since you already imported it,
these are the steps you want to take.

1. Figure out if there is one thing you can search for that is common
between all tracks but not on other albums. That would likely be the title
of the musical. Search for that in the search box in itunes.

2. Tab to the resulting list of tracks and hit control+a to select all and
then control+i to edit all. Say yes when it prompts you about editing
multiple tracks at once.

3. In this case, I would tab to the album artist field and put something in
like Aida Original cast, then tab to the compilation checkbox and check it.

I have my iTunes set to just show the CD, not to import automatically. I
then always check that the album title, artist and Genre are what I want.
For example, most Christmas albums are listed with the Genre Holiday. I
always change that to Christmas.

The other option you have is to Go through each song and make sure the
Artist names are all the same.

HTH,
Richard

That should get them all back together.

How do you have your preferences in iTunes set up so that the CD doesn't start

Yes, Sieghard, I'm looking under Albums. I've also looked under Compilations,
where there is nothing listed from this Album. It sounds, from others, that I

You've previously encouraged me to re-rip all my CDs, and I agree that, in
general, this may be the best thing to do. But this experience gives me pause.
Do you, or others, have suggestions for best practices on how to manage ripping

Great tips, especially for the multi-disc books. I'll be using that one!

Thanks. Keith

I would suggest that you select all the tracks and then do Get info with
control I. It will ask if you want to edit multiple items. Say yes.
Then under the Info tab go to the album choice and put in the name of the
album. I would also make sure you have the artist in the artist space Then all
the tracks will have the same album name and artist listed. Don't put in other
info unless it applies to all the tracks.

Only in the case of multiple CD's I also
filled in the Disk number blank of blank disks so they would stay in order. It
worked.

HTH,
Sherrie

Hi Keith,

Are you sure you are looking under the More tab and then Album? You might
also want to check Compellations.

Thanks. Keith

Good plan. Remember though to delete the iCloud backup of the iPhone

lost my phone sounds

2013-01-11 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,

I dropped my iPhone for the first time ever today. Nothing broke, so far as I
can tell. I guess the otterbox defender is worth something. But having dropped
it, it is now muted. Or I should say, sounds are muted. VO still speaks, but if
I get a call, there is no ringer, and I don't get the vo sounds either. I've
been in to settings trying to find where to unmute sounds and can't find it.
Looked in sounds, in phone and under vo settings. No dice. Can somebody tell me
how to unmute this phone, please?

Re: Can't send mail

2013-01-11 Thread Christopher Chaltain
What is your SMTP server? Some email providers, Road Runner for example,
will only allow email to go through their SMTP server if it originates
on their own network. When I was using Road Runner as my email provider,
I could only send email (through their SMTP server) if I was on Road
Runner broad band or dial up. ISP's do this to keep people from using
their SMTP servers to send out spam and denial of service attacks.

RE: Spotify, how accessible?

2013-01-11 Thread Øyvind Lode
Wendy

It seems like it's actually possible to sign up without a FaceBook account
again.
However, it's not accessible on the iOS platform.
I tried it myself now just to have a look and nothing happens when double
tapping on the sign up with e-mail.
But if I turn off VoiceOver and tap on it it works and you can then start
VoiceOver again and continue the sign up process.
Alternatively you can sign up from your computer here:

https://www.spotify.com/us/signup/open/

There is a link on this site named Create an account using your e-mail
address.

Well, they just lost a customer. I tried to sign up via email several times
and got nowhere. I'm not getting a facebook account just so that I can get
Spotify. That's just crazy.

I signed up for Spotify before they required a FaceBook account.
I can still use my Spotify account but all new customers are required to
 have FaceBook.

Regarding signing in to spotify, they do have an alternative method but I
can't get it to work and I have tried at least 4 screen readers with it.

I eventually had to log in with my facebook account and I don't know
anyone else who hasn't had to do that.

If you can do that then the app is quite accessible but there are some
unlabeled buttons. You can figure them out pretty easily though.

Focus 14 Blue +IOS 5.1.1 - having a problem pairing

2013-01-11 Thread Paweł Masarczyk
Good evening!

I have got a Focus 14 Blue display today and tried to connect it with my iPhone
4. The phone is running IOS 5.1.1 still. I went to settings / General/
Accessibility / Voice Over / Braille but the device doesn't appear there. My
computer can see it just fine.

I'm wondering: is IOS 6 required to connect these two or is it something on my
part that I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide me with.

I don’t have my phone in front of me, but as I remember, the trick is to go in
to accessibility settings (under general) and then to Braille.

Once the braille is enabled the phone will see the device.

Re: Mail App Alternatives

2013-01-11 Thread Grant Hardy
One very popular app in the mainstream iOS community is Sparrow. I've
never tried it though so have no idea whether or not it is accessible.

The built-in mail app can play very nicely with your Gmail account,
though. What you can do is set up filters and labels on the Gmail
website, i.e. I have a filter which sends messages sent to this list
to a label called ViPhone and has them skip the inbox. When I'm
reading mail in the built-in mail app, it respects the filters I've
set up because the labels show up as folders to the iPhone, which uses
IMAP to get the mail.

A lot of people don't set up their Gmail accounts using the default
IMAP route and instead opt to set them up as Exchange accounts. That
gives you push notifications, but it takes away a fair amount of
functionality and makes it harder to sort, search, and read other
folders besides the inbox (at least in my opinion). An example is that
you have to choose every folder that you want pushed, and you might
not want push alerts for all your labels! What I'd recommend doing is
setting up your Gmail account as an IMAP account then using another
app such as Ultimate Notifier, Push, or even the native Gmail app, to
provide push if you want it.

Re: iphone cases with battery extenders?

2013-01-11 Thread Alan Paganelli
David, I use a USB charger. They come in various power capacities such as
1000 mAh, 1800 mAh, 2200 mAh etc. They connect to your iPhone using your
data cable and plug into a USB port on the charger. There is also a
flip-down adapter that permits charging via a wall outlet. When no outlet
is handy like in your pocket or purse, just connect your sync/charge cable
to your phone and to the USB port on the charger and press the recessed
button. The 1000 mAh charger will recharge a dead iPhone once. Of course,
the batteries with more power can recharge more times or more devices.
Usually though there are 2 USB ports on the charger. I bought a sync/data
cable that retracts and that works great when your out and about and power
is getting low. You can also be charging your phone wile talking on it.

Note: the batteries with greater capacity are also larger in size. My 1800
mAh charger is enough to recharge 2 devices fully from being dead. In my
case, it's most often my iPhone 4 and my Bluetooth ear peace.

HTH

PS: I should also say that there are solar chargers which add one more
rankle to the mix meaning they can be charged by the sun, by it's own
battery or plugged into a wall outlet. Other chargers work with a battery
inside a case for the phone. Still others work by laying your phone on a
pad. No need to take it out of a case etc. Just more ways to get you to
spend your money. I like the 1800 mAh recharger because, it's smaller then
a deck of cards, can recharge 2 devices at once and turns it's self off when
your phone is fully charged or as high as it can before it dies but it
always disconnects so it doesn't steal power from your phone's battery.

I have been surfing the internet concerning Iphone cases which claim
to extend the phone battery life.

I guess some contain a actual additional battery, some plug into ac power.

Has anyone used these types of products?

Do they work?

Will they work on an iphone 3gs?

screen. There are many, many very experienced Apple
product users here, so I was just hoping I could tap into the accumulated
knowledge on this list. I know I can place the sleeping
iPod down and tap the home key to turn it on, so I'm hoping there is an equally
quick way of locking the screen. Thanks.

It sounds like the device needs to be reset in settings, general, reset, and
double tap reset all settings. As a last resort, in the same menu, double
tap, erase all content and settings. If you have to get to this point to
fix the problem, you may lose some content but if you cannot sync now, there

I'm assisting a friend with his iPad and there are problems with some
TV shows that he purchased from the iTunes Store. For one thing, a
specific episode gives the error could not load movie when he
attempts to play it on his iPad. The episode plays fine in iTunes on
his computer.

For another, I've just stepped in recently to assist so I'm not sure
how this situation began, but there is TV content on his iPad which is
not syncing with his iTunes Library, which is not what he wants. In
other words, it is not selected for sync within iTunes but is still
appearing on his iPad.

Any ideas on how we can get either of these cleaned up?

Performance tweaks on IPhone and iPod Touch 5th

2013-01-11 Thread Lauren Simmons
Hi all,

Just wondering if there are any tips and tricks to getting as much battery life
and performance out of an IPhone and IPodTouch. So
far the following is a list of what I've modified, and these changes have
yielded pretty good results. Yesterday I charged a new
IPodTouch 5th and determined it can run for 9 hours straight in full use and a
total of 20 hours stand by. I was at 13% battery
power before plugging in for recharging. Here's what I changed:
1. I changed the brightness to 0%.
2. I turned off Bluetooth.
3. I modified Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and alike to only check hourly. I can
always do this manually so no need for a
semi-constant check which only eats up battery life.

Is there anything else I can turn off until needed?

Re: Ripped 1 CD into iTunes; got 6 partial albums. How to fix?

2013-01-11 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Keith,
I am not at my computer right now, so I can't be as specific as I would like.
When you open iTunes, the hot key to get into preferences is control+comma.
Either on the General tab or the advance tab you will find a combo box so you
can choose what you what iTunes to do when you insert a CD.
It could also be under the Device tab.

If you don't find it, or someone else chimes in with the exact answer, let me
know and I'll double check when I fire up my computer next.

The other option you have is to Go through each song and make sure the Artist
 names are all the same.

 HTH,
 Richard

That should get them all back together.

I ripped a CD of a Broadway musical titled Aida, containing 22 tracks, and
 syncked to my iPhone.

On the iPhone Music app, under Albums, there are now 6 albums titled Aida,
some containing 1 track, others containing several tracks, totaling the 22
tracks in all. Some albums are listed as Ensemble, others with the names of
different people, but not sure if composers, performers, or what. The tracks
are not in proper sequence across the different albums, e.g. on one album is
 track 12; on another album are tracks 2, 6, 13, 14,, and 22.

I just want to listen to this album Track 1 through Track 22.

Can anyone explain what happened and why. And, how to get it working in the
 obvious way?

 Thanks. Keith

RE: RE: Ripped 1 CD into iTunes; got 6 partial albums. How to fix?

2013-01-11 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Richard and Sherrie,

Thanks very much. I think I've fixed this one.

Is there a way to keep Compilations checked as a Preference so it's a default?

I've looked at some other albums I've ripped. Some albums which were
compilations were recognized as compilations, but others were not. I guess I
didn't catch this before. But, if Compilations could be a default, wouldn't
that keep all the tracks from a newly ripped CD together?

Learning slowly, but at least I'm learning smile.

Welcome to the biggest headache when importing CDs into iTunes.
What happened is that the tracks are tagged with different artists, usually to
point out who are the soloists on each of those tracks.
It is best to do this before you import, but since you already imported it,
these are the steps you want to take.

1. Figure out if there is one thing you can search for that is common between
all tracks but not on other albums. That would likely be the title of the
musical. Search for that in the search box in itunes.

2. Tab to the resulting list of tracks and hit control+a to select all and
then control+i to edit all. Say yes when it prompts you about editing multiple
tracks at once.

3. In this case, I would tab to the album artist field and put something in
like Aida Original cast, then tab to the compilation checkbox and check it.

I have my iTunes set to just show the CD, not to import automatically. I then
always check that the album title, artist and Genre are what I want. For
example, most Christmas albums are listed with the Genre Holiday. I always
change that to Christmas.

The other option you have is to Go through each song and make sure the Artist
names are all the same.

HTH,
Richard

That should get them all back together.

Hi all,

I dropped my iPhone for the first time ever today. Nothing broke, so far as
I can tell. I guess the otterbox defender is worth something. But having
dropped it, it is now muted. Or I should say, sounds are muted. VO still
speaks, but if I get a call, there is no ringer, and I don't get the vo
sounds either. I've been in to settings trying to find where to unmute
sounds and can't find it. Looked in sounds, in phone and under vo settings.
No dice. Can somebody tell me how to unmute this phone, please?

I got it to import by right-clicking on the CD (Shift+F10). It worked well.

I just selected all, and then checked Compilation, and it fixed the issue.

I think I've moved to a new dimension in understanding and using iTunes today.
Still a long way to go, though.

The only time you really want to use compilation is if tracks have different
artists.
So, CDs that only have one artist listed, will always rip correctly.
And, no, there is no way to set compilation as a default.

Bluetooth headset in church or no-interruptions environment?

2013-01-11 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Hi all.

I am using a motorola hx550 headset (one ear). I really like it. However, in
church and other really public situations where interruptions wouldn't be
appropriate, I am still using my iPhone earpods. i would like to go completely
bluetooth but I am wondering about the following:

(1) Is it likely that the bluetooth might go down in the middle of something so
that I would suddenly find my iPhone talking for everybody to hear?
(2) If the bluetooth headset is hanging on my ear instead of being in my ear (I
have choices with this headset), is it likely that people sitting near me would
hear it and be distracted.

I would be in airplane mode with bluetooth on and would have notifications in
locked screen turned off plus the mute button would be engaged. But I would be
taking notes and using my bluetooth headset to hear what I am writing.

RE: Bluetooth headset in church or no-interruptions environment?

2013-01-11 Thread Tony
I have a similar arrangement. I have a bluetooth device that picks up
signals from the iphone and sends them to my hearing aids. I can listen to
both iphone output and the hearing aid microphones pick up surrounding
sounds at the same time.

The only time my iphone starts talking out loud is if I set the iphone down
and walk more than about 30 feet away from it or if the bluetooth device's
battery runs down.

Make sure your bluetooth device is charged before using it with the iphone
and you should have no problems. I have an external battery pack than can
charge both the iphone and the bluetooth device if I'm going to be using
both for more than 6 or 8 hours non stop.

I can confirm what Chris said, when I was still using POP back in the Middle

I have been using full Exchange for my business email and Windows Live which

Pages and Office, was: Please to announce Pages being 100% accessible

2013-01-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Listers,

Just for those who are thinking of paying a relatively large amount for an
app, Pages is $10 after all, keep in mind that we will see Office as an app
probably some time around the middle of the year. This may initially be just
an iPad version, nobody knows, of course, but I believe Microsoft all but
confirmed that there will be an Office app in the near future.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi,
I get no results when searching for Pages under the iPhone heading, can you
give me any more info on what to look for?
Thanks.

Jon

As the subject line says the latest release of Pages fixes the accessibility
issues that were prevalent in other builds. The unlabeled buttons are now
labeled and the rename feature for documents are now there.

Enjoy!

RE: Bluetooth headset in church or no-interruptions environment?

2013-01-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Cheryl,

If you turn on Airplane mode there is really no point to turn off
Notifications in the lock screen. With Airplane Mode on WiFi, Bluetooth and
cellular services are all disapled. In fact, you would have to go back and
manually turn on Bluetooth again, but you probably know that.

Bluetooth should not disconnect from your earpiece randomly unless your
earpiece suddenly runs out of battery, but most headsets have some sort of
audible warning when the battery is low, either a beep or a spoken notice.
The other possibility when bluetooth may disconnect is if you leave your
iPhone somewhere and move away from it, but you have to be at least 30 or
more feet away before it drops the connection.

I doubt somebody who is 3 or 4 feet away from you could hear Voiceover
talking over a bluetooth earpiece.

Having said all that, I have a bluetooth earpiece as well, but unless I
really can't have a wire, I totally prefer the Apple Earpods. You could just
put one of them in your ear and it's much less noticeable and of course if
you are taking notes, a wired headset would be my choice because of the
delay you get with bluetooth.

Regards,

Sieghard

Subject: Bluetooth headset in church or no-interruptions environment?

Hi all.

I am using a motorola hx550 headset (one ear). I really like it. However, in
church and other really public situations where interruptions wouldn't be
appropriate, I am still using my iPhone earpods. i would like to go
completely bluetooth but I am wondering about the following:

(1) Is it likely that the bluetooth might go down in the middle of something
so that I would suddenly find my iPhone talking for everybody to hear?

(2) If the bluetooth headset is hanging on my ear instead of being in my ear
(I have choices with this headset), is it likely that people sitting near me
would hear it and be distracted.

I would be in airplane mode with bluetooth on and would have notifications
in locked screen turned off plus the mute button would be engaged. But I
would be taking notes and using my bluetooth headset to hear what I am
writing.
