RE: Deleting an app from my phone

2013-12-08 Thread Tess
Yeah, this is what I do, but in my particular case, I can't delete a certain
app. It is the game center app.
Any reason why it refuses to allow me to delete it?

Double-tap and hold the app on your screen. In other words, tap twice
quickly, but on the second tap, keep your finger there. After you hear the
distinctive tone, vO will say: moving and the name of the app. Simply lift
your finger at this point. Now you're in edit mode. Find the app again and
double-tap it. you'll get a confirmation dialog asking if you want to
delete. Press the delete button. Once you've done this, double-check to see
if the app is still there. If it isn't, press your home button to get out of
edit mode.

You could instead move it to the dock or on a different page of the home

Latest Prizmo seems to be fine now!

2013-12-08 Thread Sandratomkins
Hello all you scanners and especially Richard,
After reading Richards message, and seeing the near perfection of his scanned
document using the latest version of Prizmo, I decided to uninstall and
re-download mine. It now works well! Indeed, I took a quick snap, freehand, of
part of a page of the newspaper and got a near perfect result! In the past,
Prizmo struggled, as did all the scanning apps, with newspaper print. Now,
however, it seems to be doing really well! If I compare Prizmo and its
performance now with the original version, I have to say, it has come on leaps
and bounds. So, for those of you who had small or no success using it
tpreviously, I would suggest you try again. And don't forget the usefulness of
a light box such as the stand scan pro. Remembering that the 12 V battery
option is the best way to go.

J MT,
Sandy

Hi,
I've been taking a look at the Internet archive site which was mentioned by
aman the other day. It looks extremely nice and useful! However, when I choose,
four example, an audiobook such as Huckleberry Finn, I find three unlabelled
buttons near the top of the screen. I am wondering if these are the download
buttons, or, if people know how to go about downloading, could you tell me?

Thanks in advance,

Well, there are a few things you can do. When you lose, you should get a tip.
Sometimes those tips are useful like a certain enemy is especially subject to
magic damage or an enemy likes to attack the last person in the party instead
of the first person in the party. Unfortunately, sometimes the tips are
 pretty useless.

you can also notice what happens to your party during the battle. I'll do a
two finger swipe up periodically during the battle and then try to notice
what's happening to my party, like the first heroes in the party are going
down first, or the heroes with no magic resistance are taking the brunt of
the battle. Between this and the tips you get you can change up your strategy
and eventually come up with a winning combination.

In general, I like to put heavily armored heroes up front and keep the
magical heroes in the back. Sometimes the enemy likes to go after heroes at
the bottom of the party, so you'll need to switch this up. Obviously, if
you're going up against magic using enemies, you'll want to use heroes with
good resistance and use an alchemist to heal the party, since they also help
with your party's resistance. If the enemy party deals out a lot of maleigh
damage, then you'll want a heavily armored party. Periodically review your
heroes characteristics, so you'll know what their strengths and weaknesses
are with respect to armor, magic, range damage and so on. When things aren't
working, step back and come up with a different strategy. For example, right
now, I like loading my parties up with footmen and knights and try delivering
that killer knock out blow up front. If it works, the enemy party loses a
hero right away and you have a advantage. If it doesn't work, you might win a
long drawn out battle or just lose in the long run. I call this my old school
strategy because as you get new heroes, like druids, hawkeyes, sentinels and
so on, you tend to forget what your healers, footmen and knights can do.

I, too, cannot reach the wish list or download anything from BARD on my
iPhone. Since there were a few outstanding titles I wanted recently I
downloaded them to my computer. Then I put them in Dropbox. This is
tedious since my upload speed is slow but I really wanted the new J. D. Robb
book! Then on the iPhone I opened the Dropbox app and clicked on the zip
file for the book. It takes a while to download it to Dropbox but when it
reached 100% I clicked on Share. Then on Open with ...The last step is to
choose Open in BARD.
For some reason I had to try this several times before it showed up in the
Bookshelf list. Go ahead and click the share button even when it says This
file cannot be opened..yada yada.

For now it is a work around until BARD fixes the problem.

Here’s an update. I just called up T Mobile, and I specificly asked if my cell

Re: T mobile users out there, question

2013-12-08 Thread Kelly Pierce
I live in Chicago and use the T-Mobile prepaid $30 a month plan that I
described in my article on iPhone on the cheap. I have an iPhone 5
from December 2012, before Apple supported the AWS band. I regularly
obtain download speeds of 10 Mbps and upload speeds 700 to 900 Kbps.
Sometimes my upload speeds are one Mbps. When I visit family in
northern Indiana, the iPhone falls back to 2G EDGE speeds that are
only two to three times as fast as a dial-up internet connection. By
next spring or summer, T-Mobile said that all cell towers will be
refarmed to HSPA+ and/or LTE, making this a non-issue.

Call quality is excellent and very clear. My calls are much clearer
than on a friend’s iPhone 5 with ATT. With the $30 a month plan
T-Mobile says that five Gb of data is at LTE speeds and speeds are
reduced to EDGE when five GB of data is used in a month. I listen to
iTunes radio, TuneIn and download two or three talking books from NLS
each month and I don’t even chew up one megabyte of data.

Here’s an update. I just called up T Mobile, and I specificly asked if my
cell plan was truly unlimited data, and they said it was. If, however, I
used my iPhone as a tethered hot spot, I’m limited to 500 MB of data using
it that way. Since I have a mobile hot spot I’m not going to use my iPhone

Hi, Russ and all.
These seem to be some odd encryption/obfuscation method used by
certain providers. I wrote to Winston at VoiceDream asking about using
the files from archive.org on VDR, which would be wonderful, and
generally asking what encrypted files meant in this context. He
explained as follows:

Theses are DAISY files with encrypted file names used mainly in Europe.

Localscope app is free (November 8, 2013)

2013-12-08 Thread Esther
Hi All,

Localscope, an iPhone navigation app, is free today. This app gives information
on what's in your vicinity and lets you search for POIs similar to AroundMe and
Where To?, but has some other features. For example, from the main screen,
your present location is identified, and you can share this with others with
both address information and link to Google maps, subject to the usual GPS
accuracy limits. However, when you search for POIs, you can change the source
of your search from the default Google Places, to other sources like Four
Square, Yelp, Yellow Pages (though this seems to only be the Australian Yellow
Pages), etc. This iPhone app works internationally, and you can select the
sources it uses, which includes social media sites.

Here's the app store URL:
• Localscope (free for a short period, usually lists for $2.99) by Cynapse
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/localscope/id409869453?mt=8

Be aware that the labeling of the Localscope app interface is not the greatest
for VoiceOver users, but it's usable. For example, the buttons on the main
screen are Gear White, Dashboard BTN Discover,Dashboard BTN Search, and
icon Aroow1 White Up beside your current address. You'll want to relabel
these elements with the two finger double tap and hold to something like
Settings Help, Discover, Search, and My Location. Also, when you
navigate away from the main dashboard screen, the button in the top left corner
of the screen for returning to the main screen is not identified as a back
button, and in the case of using the Discover and Search buttons are
labeled icon Dashboard White. I couldn't use the two finger scrub gesture to
move back. You'll have to decide for yourself whether the real content
advantages of this app outweights the annoying nature of the interface . For
example, the search button has a category for jobs. Double tapping this
brings up a list of results with their addresses and distances that you can
double tap for more information. But if you move your finger up from the home
button at the bottom of the screen, just above your location address (or
longitude and latitude coordinates if an address can't be resolved) you'll hear
the selected source announced, which is Google Places, but with the labeling
of this app will come out as selected, lens incon google places unsel, dimmed
button. If you flick right to another source and double tap, like Four
Square, Yelp, Factual, Wikimapia, City Search, or other sources, you
get different listed search results, so you can get a quite substantial list of
possibilities.

Also, note that many of the sources for the Discover button are for
photographs and image sites like Picasa, Panoramio,Flickr, and these tend
to get listed first. There is a user guide under the Gear White (aka
Settings Help when relabeled) page under the help tab, but focus doesn't go
correctly to these items when the previous Settings tab contents updates, so
I end up double tapping km to bring up the guide.

I know this is one of David Chittenden's favorite POI apps, so maybe he can
offer more suggestions. I think it's worthwhile to get while free, and useful
if you can get past the annoying labeling. I think the developer's Twitter
name is @cynapse, if anyone wants to get I. Touch with them about improving
accessibility.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

This is just a guess, but if you can get your finger on the link, try a
double tap and hold.

If that doesn't work, maybe someone who has actually dealt with it can be
more helpful. If not, then this could be reported to
accessibil...@apple.com

I know there are plans to make lots more interactive material available in
iBooks, so if they missed making that accessible, that would be an issue.

Good luck,

It will also mean you need to reenter your passwords, I would probably do a
full backup on a computer using iTunes just in case. I had to do this
Friday, I also, took the step of disabling the volume slider on the rotor.
Until this issue gets fixed I don't want to have to reset the phone again.
One question to all regarding this reset does the auto update for apps in
setting being turned off in the apps itune settings fix the update
automatically issue? I don't remember how that works.

Hi,
Upgrading my iPhone 4 to IOS 7 went smoothly, and I didn't experience
significant sluggishness issues. I didn't notice major performance
degradation in the apps that I frequently used. I did notice some
sluggishness with Seeing Eye GPS, but it was sluggish on my iPhone 4 even
prior to the upgrade to IOS 7, so I considered that to be a nonissue.

remember how usable but sluggish it was compared to iOS 7 on my shiny
new 4s, which is at least ten times better. The 5s well I can't comment

BARD and Commercial audio books

2013-12-08 Thread Richard Turner
I know the app has not worked the last few days.

I was just looking through the recently added books on my computer and found
they have the commercial edition of The Goldfinch. I've been interested in
that book since it has received many great reviews and was considering
buying it from Audible when I was pleasantly surprised this morning to find
it in the recently added books.

The book was just released on October 22, 2013.

So, in less than two months, NLS has managed to make the commercial
recording available to their patrons.

In spite of the problems the app is having this weekend, I just wanted to
mention here that NLS deserves huge kudos for taking this approach to
building their collection.

Archive.org has a few million books available to everyone and
somewhere between 25 and 50 books in encrypted format for
blind users using the NLS encryption system. At the moment, these are
locked up, particularly from those of us who need braille, by the fact

Re: Any tips for entering an itunes gift card using the iPhone's camera

2013-12-08 Thread Alex Hall
The code is easy to find - it is under the plastic strip you remove. Just get
into good lighting, position the lens just above that code, and raise the phone
until the code is captured. Move slowly, letting the camera focus as you go,
and it should work.

Re: Solara heros

2013-12-08 Thread Christopher Chaltain

I'm not sure what you're asking.

Just guessing, but after you double tap the battle button, you can use a
two finger swipe up to hear how your battle is going. The first two
heroes listed will be from you're party and then it'll list the first
two heroes from your enemy's party and then the 3rd and 4th heroes from
your party, so you can hear how each member of your party is doing.

For example, I was in the arena and battling a party consisting of a
huntress, a mage, a sorcerer and a druid. The first member of my party,
whether it be a templer, sentinel or whatever, was always being taken
out right away. I finally moved a ranger into that #1 position on my
party and won the battle. BTW, I lost a few battles before I figured
that out and lost my chance to finish in the top ten of that tournament.
Sometimes you just have to be patient and lose a few battles to figure
something out and learn something new about the game and your heroes.

Well, there are a few things you can do. When you lose, you should get a tip.
Sometimes those tips are useful like a certain enemy is especially subject to
magic damage or an enemy likes to attack the last person in the party instead
of the first person in the party. Unfortunately, sometimes the tips are pretty
useless.

you can also notice what happens to your party during the battle. I'll do a two
finger swipe up periodically during the battle and then try to notice what's
happening to my party, like the first heroes in the party are going down first,
or the heroes with no magic resistance are taking the brunt of the battle.
Between this and the tips you get you can change up your strategy and
eventually come up with a winning combination.

In general, I like to put heavily armored heroes up front and keep the magical
heroes in the back. Sometimes the enemy likes to go after heroes at the bottom
of the party, so you'll need to switch this up. Obviously, if you're going up
against magic using enemies, you'll want to use heroes with good resistance and
use an alchemist to heal the party, since they also help with your party's
resistance. If the enemy party deals out a lot of maleigh damage, then you'll
want a heavily armored party. Periodically review your heroes characteristics,
so you'll know what their strengths and weaknesses are with respect to armor,
magic, range damage and so on. When things aren't working, step back and come
up with a different strategy. For example, right now, I like loading my parties
up with footmen and knights and try delivering that killer knock out blow up
front. If it works, the enemy party loses a hero right away and you have a
advantage. If it doesn't work, you might win a long drawn ou

t battle or just lose in the long run. I call this my old school strategy
because as you get new heroes, like druids, hawkeyes, sentinels and so on, you
tend to forget what your healers, footmen and knights can do.

RE: Voice Dream Reader and encrypted daisy

2013-12-08 Thread Richard Turner
Hi,
Assuming you have a DropBox account setup, and you have enabled DropBox
under the Voice Dream Reader settings, you would download the Open Library
book on your computer, copy it to your DropBox folder, open Voice Dream
Reader, double tap on Add, select DropBox as your source, and find the file
and double tap on it and see if Voice Dream can open the book.

HTH,
Richard

The app I used for dictation on my iPhone 4, before I got my 4S is called
Vokul. It's really great! It even lets you control music using voice commands!
I think it's 2 or 3 dollars in the U.S. asp store. I'm not sure if it's
available in other countries, but you might try looking if you're outside the
U.S.

voice over even when using headphones. So I would appreciate knowing
not only which app to use for this purpose but also how to use it to

Sometimes my upload speeds are one Mbps. When I visit family in

only two to three times as fast as a dial-up internet connection. By
next spring or summer, T-Mobile said that all cell towers will be
refarmed to HSPA+ and/or LTE, making this a non-issue.

Call quality is excellent and very clear. My calls are much clearer
than on a friend's iPhone 5 with ATT. With the $30 a month plan
T-Mobile says that five Gb of data is at LTE speeds and speeds are
reduced to EDGE when five GB of data is used in a month. I listen to

each month and I don't even chew up one megabyte of data.

I'll call them up to get a clarification of their so called unlimited plan.

Here's an update. I just called up T Mobile, and I specificly asked if my
cell plan was truly unlimited data, and they said it was. If, however, I
used my iPhone as a tethered hot spot, I'm limited to 500 MB of data using
it that way. Since I have a mobile hot spot I'm not going to use my iPhone
 as a hot spot.

RE: Voice Dream Reader and encrypted daisy

2013-12-08 Thread Richard Turner
You could try that with Safari and when you get to the download link, see
what happens if you do a double tap and hold on the link and then select
copy link.
Then, In Voice Dream, when you double tap on add, select Web Browser. In
the address field, paste the download link.
I would think that would work.

I just did a daisy book from openlibrary.org using my computer and Dropbox
and it worked fine.
Though, the book itself has no markup for chapters or pages or anything, but
all the introductory material did.
This was Hamlet, by Shakespeare.

It is available in other places with the ability to go to different acts,
etc., I was just curious to see if it would work.

Good luck,
Richard

login which will then ask for your email address. Type that in. Under that
it asks you for your password. Type that in and double tap continue in the
lower right-hand corner. That should get you logged in. Then you should
see your folders if you've created them etc.

iTunes File Sharing Mostly Miss

2013-12-08 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Everyone.

I was missing the last, all important step re adding Bard books through
iTunes: hitting the Sync button. I was following instructions from
can't-remember-where and didn't hit the Sync button because there was
nothing in the directions about doing that. I'm new to file sharing; I know
you can do it, but haven't had a reason to try it till now. It didn't click
that iTunes was the link between the computer and the iDevice, that I have
to sync/give the OK for the transfer to the iPod via iTunes.

But . I've only been able to download _one book. I tried replicating the
steps and haven't been successful. I get the three tone chime from iTunes
that seems like a sync happened, and the Documents portion of the Bard
Mobile app is blank. But no doorbell on Berd Mobile's end.

Are there any settings I should be looking at?

Thanks,

Dani

obtain download speeds of 10 Mbps and upload speeds 700 to 900 Kbps.
Sometimes my upload speeds are one Mbps. When I visit family in

two to three times as fast as a dial-up internet connection. By next
spring or summer, T-Mobile said that all cell towers will be refarmed

Call quality is excellent and very clear. My calls are much clearer
than on a friend's iPhone 5 with ATT. With the $30 a month plan
T-Mobile says that five Gb of data is at LTE speeds and speeds are
reduced to EDGE when five GB of data is used in a month. I listen to
iTunes radio, TuneIn and download two or three talking books from NLS

The maximum amount of data that I can get for my hot spot is 12 gigs

Here's an update. I just called up T Mobile, and I specificly asked
if my cell plan was truly unlimited data, and they said it was. If,
however, I used my iPhone as a tethered hot spot, I'm limited to 500

not going to use my iPhone as a hot spot.

Yes, this does work. Up until now, I wasn't able to get to page 4. When I did
this time, at first, even though I hit sign in it had me on the page to
create, but when I hit the back button and did sign in I was able to sign in.
Really dumb to have it on the last page imo.

voicestream tutorials

2013-12-08 Thread Tom Cramer
Hi,

Where can I get some good and comprehensive tutorials for VoiceStream so
that I can really learn how to use it? I also don't know where or how to
put my books on it. I do have the Readtogo app but I know Voicestream is
better.

I know the app has not worked the last few days.

I was just looking through the recently added books on my computer and
 found
they have the commercial edition of The Goldfinch.

Just guessing, but after you double tap the battle button, you can use a two
finger swipe up to hear how your battle is going. The first two heroes listed
will be from you're party and then it'll list the first two heroes from your
enemy's party and then the 3rd and 4th heroes from your party, so you can
hear how each member of your party is doing.

For example, I was in the arena and battling a party consisting of a
huntress, a mage, a sorcerer and a druid. The first member of my party,
whether it be a templer, sentinel or whatever, was always being taken out
right away. I finally moved a ranger into that #1 position on my party and
won the battle. BTW, I lost a few battles before I figured that out and lost
my chance to finish in the top ten of that tournament. Sometimes you just
have to be patient and lose a few battles to figure something out and learn
something new about the game and your heroes.

Well, there are a few things you can do. When you lose, you should get a
tip. Sometimes those tips are useful like a certain enemy is especially
subject to magic damage or an enemy likes to attack the last person in the
party instead of the first person in the party. Unfortunately, sometimes
 the tips are pretty useless.

you can also notice what happens to your party during the battle. I'll do a
two finger swipe up periodically during the battle and then try to notice
what's happening to my party, like the first heroes in the party are going
down first, or the heroes with no magic resistance are taking the brunt of
the battle. Between this and the tips you get you can change up your
strategy and eventually come up with a winning combination.

In general, I like to put heavily armored heroes up front and keep the
magical heroes in the back. Sometimes the enemy likes to go after heroes at
the bottom of the party, so you'll need to switch this up. Obviously, if
you're going up against magic using enemies, you'll want to use heroes with
good resistance and use an alchemist to heal the party, since they also
help with your party's resistance. If the enemy party deals out a lot of
maleigh damage, then you'll want a heavily armored party. Periodically
review your heroes characteristics, so you'll know what their strengths and
weaknesses are with respect to armor, magic, range damage and so on. When
things aren't working, step back and come up with a different strategy. For
example, right now, I like loading my parties up with footmen and knights
and try delivering that killer knock out blow up front. If it works, the
enemy party loses a hero right away and you have a advantage. If it doesn't
work, you might win a long drawn ou
t battle or just lose in the long run. I call this my old school strategy
because as you get new heroes, like druids, hawkeyes, sentinels and so on,
you tend to forget what your healers, footmen and knights can do.

Kevin, yes, and I regret the upgrade. I have since sold my 4 but can
remember how usable but sluggish it was compared to iOS 7 on my shiny new
4s, which is at least ten times better. The 5s well I can't comment on

are of course my experiences so as the saying goes your mileage may vary.

My experience with T-Mobile, was: T mobile users out there, question

2013-12-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I was in Las Vegas a few weeks ago and while I was only there for 4 days at
a trade show, I still wanted to be able to have access to my email and use
Facetime and other VoIP services. I have an unlocked iPhone 5S which I
bought from Apple here in Canada directly.
I went to a T-Mobile store in a mall and bought a Nano SIM for $10.
On top of that I spend $15 for 5 days of service at $3/day.
I was told this would give me unlimited calling and texting in the States
and 200 Mb of data each day.
Where I live in Canada we don't yet have LTE service and I was looking
forward to seeing how fast this was. I was shocked how poor the coverage in
general seemed to be. I sometimes had LTE showing in the status bar when I
was outside and at one point I was walking from the Flamingo where I was
staying to the Mirage where the trade show was. Both resorts are on the
south end of Las Vegas Boulevard right in the heart of the Strip and as I
was walking it showed LTE and 5 of 5 bars signal strength. I started
Blindsquare and since I hadn't used it since I got my 5S it wanted to
download the additional voice. The download was 25 Mb and I thought this
would take a few seconds on LTE. I started the download and after my almost
10 minute walk to the Mirage it had downloaded less than 20% and all in all
I think the download took about an hour. On the 11th floor of my hotel in an
outside room I could hardly use my phone because I only had 1 or, if I was
luck 2 out of 5 bars signal strength and the status bar displayed 4G all the
time which I thought was something only ATT was doing.
All in all I was quite disappointed in the service and I ended up spending
another $15 for 2 days of WiFi access at the convention centre where the
show took place and that turned out to be much more reliable for email, VoIP
calls and so on.
When I ran a speed test in Vancouver at the airport the LTE connection gave
me 21 Mb/s down and almost 8 Mb/s up which I thought was pretty impressive.

Regards,
Sieghard

My calls are much clearer
than on a friend's iPhone 5 with ATT. With the $30 a month plan
T-Mobile says that five Gb of data is at LTE speeds and speeds are
reduced to EDGE when five GB of data is used in a month. I listen to
iTunes radio, TuneIn and download two or three talking books from NLS
each month and I don't even chew up one megabyte of data.

RE: My experience with T-Mobile, was: T mobile users out there, question

2013-12-08 Thread Corey Michael Cook
it really depends on where you use t-mobile. Their networks is well not the
best. I expect you would have had better results using Verizon or ATT. yes
more expensive but you do get what you pay for.

Subject: My experience with T-Mobile, was: T mobile users out there,
question

Sieghard

My calls are much clearer
than on a friend's iPhone 5 with ATT.

Apple Maps

2013-12-08 Thread David Chittenden
The more I play with Apple Maps, the more I like it. I used Apple Maps earlier
to locate new potential places to live. After I got the address from the
website, I opened Apple Maps. I placed the address (number and street name
only) in the search edit field. I then right flick a couple times, or slide my
finger down the display a little, and I find a list of cities. Apple Maps shows
me the name of each city and country where the address and street is valid. I
double-tap on the city I want.

Now, a pop-up window opens. At the top of the display is Directions Button. One
flick right shows the full address in the search field. After that is one's
current location. Double-tap on directions and one gets the choices of driving
Button, Walking Button, and Public Transit button. Double-tap on any of these
buttons to select it. Then, double-tap on Route Button to take Apple Maps to
the next screen.

On this screen, one can start the route, or one can go to the bottom of the
display and find the Directions Button. Double-tap Directions to have the route
displayed. The displayed route is excellent, listing direction to travel,
distance to next point, and direction to turn (left or right). At the end, it
shows whether the place is on the left or right.

Also in the Start screen is a More Info Button and an Options button. In
Options, one can add multiple stops to the route, amongst other options.

Note: Currently Apple Maps does not support public transit information, so it
brings up GPS apps on the iPhone that support Public Transit. When I opened
Google Maps, my starting and destination information was loaded for me.

For a free option, this is very good. Also, the map screen can be tactually
explored by moving one's finger slowly. Apple Maps announces the street one is
touching, and can go into tracking mode with sound cues for following streets
on the display.

Note, I have not yet used Apple Maps for route navigation. Given that I like it
for what's around me when I am walking, I suspect it will do quite well with
routes. I will test it soon.

Re: Journal app for diabetics?

2013-12-08 Thread Brett
Hi,

Glucose Buddy is one app that should do the trick. It can sync with the
www.glucosebuddy.com site. The app and registration to the web site are both
free. The app does have in app purchases for things like blood presure
tracking. But you don't need these things to log your blood sugar and carb
intake etc.

Hope this helps,
Brett.
