Is this with the onscreen keyboard or a bluetooth keyboard? I guess either way you should check Voiceover Settings and Typing Feedback, that is the only place I can think of. Here you can set if you want typing feedback to be None, Character, Word or both Character and Word. You can set this individually for the virtual and external keyboards. Maybe his is set to None in which case, however, Voiceover should still speak each letter as you touch it, it just won’t speak it a second time when you release it. RE: A Definite Step Backwards for AudioBook Listeners in iOS 8.4 iBooks
What's the file extension for podcast files? i.e. .m4a for audio, .m4b for books, .m4r for ringtones, etc. Thanks, Keith -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of M. Taylor Sent: Friday, July 03, 2015 2:29 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: A Definite Step Backwards for AudioBook Listeners in iOS 8.4 iBooks Hello Frank, Thank you so much for your very thoughtful reply and for your precisely stated options. As I posted in a different thread, my solution to this conundrum is to simply tag the files as I normally would but, under the media type, select Podcast rather than Audiobook. Given that I do not use the native iOS podcast app for listening to actual podcast, choosing instead to use DownCast, the podcast area of my iTunes library is completely empty of any live podcast feeds. Consequently, all I see when I open this area of iTunes is the list of books. After syncing to my iOS device, launching the native podcast app displays all of my manually created audiobooks. Single-finger double-tapping on any of the books results in each title being displayed just as it used to be displayed in iOS 8.3 and earlier. While I have no objection to third-party apps, I really do try to use as many native iOS apps as possible. It took over a year or so but I have finally found a practival use for the native podcast app (smile). Thank you again for your help on this. Juli 2015 08:52:17 UTC+2 M. Taylor: snip So, for example, I have three episodes from the Beyond Midnight radio series. The three titles are Let me See Your Face, Fortieth Birthday, and The Room. These are .mp3 files that, after being imported into iTunes, I change their media type to Audio Book. Now because I have them tagged as Beyond Midnight, under the Album field, in the Title field, I can list the actual episode names as listed above. In iOS 8.3 and earlier, after syncing to my iOS device, I would then simply select Audiobooks from within the native music app, and then I would see Beyond Midnight listed as a single book. After single-finger double-tapping on the title, I would then see each episode listed by name. No longer. To my complete dismay, I now discover that in iOS 8.4, the iBooks app does not list the individual episodes by names or chapter titles but simply list them as tracks. This means that when I now select Beyond Midnight, under contents, all I see are track 1, track 2, and track 3. Try as I may, I cannot figure out how to get each episode listed by its episode title or chapter heading. snip If any of you have discovered a tagging method that will allow for the individual chapter titles to be respected in audiobooks, in the iBooks app, please post. snip I have exactly the same problem with audio books being handled by the ibooks app on IOS 8.4. As long as Apple won't display track names instead of track numbers (and I fear they won't at all) I see only two approaches to solve this problem: 1) Tag all audio book files as music so that they will be displayed in the music app. Although this seems to solve your problem the drawback is that your music library gets cluttered with audio books and if you don't tag them to be skipped when playing in random mode they will also be selected along with your music files. 2) Change the album name of the audio book files to the names of the specific episode. So in your case the albums would be called Let me See Your Face, Fortieth Birthday, and The Room all having Beyond Midnight set as artist. Problem here is that you get a lot of seperate audio books in the ibooks app (I got a show with 73 episodes...) Currently I see no other solution to this. Re: Battery drain on my 6 since 8.4
It seems some but not all people running 8.4 are having this problem. I haven't experienced it yet, but I also haven't enabled Apple Music either, so perhaps that's the culprit. first thing to do is check your apps running in the background. There may be a rogue app sucking your phone or tablet's battery life. As far as Apple Music is concerned, streaming services can be a huge drain on the battery life. Head over to Settings General Usage Battery Usage to see apps that are draining the most battery. If you notice something unusual, update that app, reinstall it or completely remove it. You may also consider limiting the activity of apps in the background. Go to Settings General Background App Refresh Turn it off for individual apps. Alternatively, you may consider storing your songs locally. Streaming music over 4G LTE consumes a lot of battery power, whether it's Apple Music, Spotify or any other service. If you are in a poor coverage area, turn on the Airplane Mode to save battery. If the problem still persists or you believe that the iOS 8.4 is the real culprit, you may downgrade to iOS 8.3. Re: Editing tags on the Idevice?
I don’t know if this would work but have you tried this. Go to the music app. Next swipe to the artist in question. Next do a two finger double tap and hold and wait for the three rising tones. Then remove the unknown artist and replace it with the name of the artist. Then swipe to save and then double tap. Try that and see if that works. Now if you are running iOS 8.4 make sure you are in the my music tab before doing this. Frustrated with your Mac, I-device, or AppleTV? New user and want quick efficient answers? Re: Anyone figure out what liking a song does in new Apple Music
Hi Brian, liking music in Apple Music has different consequences, depending on where you're liking it. If you create your own radio station based on an artist or song, a menu is available similar to the old iTunes Radio that helps you influence the kind of music you here. In this case you can play more like the current song or tell Apple Music you're not a fan of the current song. If you like a song when listening to one of the Apple Music featured stations, this doesn't influence the music you hear on that station, since the songs are chosen by humans, not an algorithm as with a service like Pandora. However liking music played on a featured station is still worthwhile, because it influences the music you see in the For You tab. And speaking of the For You tab, you can double-tap and hold on a suggestion there to get a menu, one of whose options is to tell Apple Music you don't like the suggestion you've been offered. Taking the time to tweak these things can give you a wonderful music listening an discovery experience. Even though Apple Music pre-dates iOS 9, there will be a comprehensive chapter on it in my next book, iOS 9 Without the Eye, with plenty of Apple Music tips and tricks like this. Hope that helps. Re: Battery drain on my 6 since 8.4
Go through settings, see what it's turned on and turn it off again, if you don't need it. There's often a lot of that about. - Original Message - From: 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone viphone@googlegroups.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, July 03, 2015 12:45 PM Subject: Battery drain on my 6 since 8.4 Hi, This may even be true of my phone since 8.3, but, certainly, since 8.4, my battery is draining alarmingly since I upgraded. I have always found the battery life of the 6 to be excellent, but, unfortunately, no longer. Am I alone in this? If so, it might be attributable to an app I have installed or some such. However, Location Based services are not showing up in the status bar and I am just at home, not running GPS etc. Can anyone confirm? Sandy. Re: Apple Music: adding songs to playlists
I find that if you add the track to my music first, then adding to a playlist is more reliable. To add from my music, as stated before, just go to the track, swipe down to more, double tap, then choose add to playlist. Chris Sent from my iPhone On Jul 2, 2015, at 7:59 PM, Lynette Frison 1baby1...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all, My first impressions of Apple Music aren't great. While it's very accessible, I primarily organize my music by creating various playlists. I was excited that I could share these with my friends and perhaps follow other peoples' lists as well. However, when I attempted to add songs to a list by double tapping on more in the player window, then tapping on add to playlist and then the name of the playlist, the song was not added. Voiceover said, added, but when I went into the playlist itself, it was empty. Has anyone experienced this? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Re: Follow-up about serious VoiceOver bug in iOS 8.4
I have noticed this behavior as well. As an example, if I am in the index of messages using the native Mail app, and if the first in the list has already been read, a right flick may bring me to the second message in the list as if the first were not there. The solution, as others have recommended, is to touch the screen rather than swipe or flick. Craig On Thursday, July 2, 2015, Grant grant.li...@icloud.com wrote: Thank you for this confirmation. It turns out that this problem is appearing in many more places, including Email messages. I've discovered that often, when using a swipe right or swipe left to move through a message in Mail, or even when doing a two-finger swipe up to read the entire message, some entire paragraphs can be skipped. The only way to tell that this is happening is by reviewing the message multiple times to look for missed text. I've never seen anything quite like this, and I'm wondering if others are finding this as serious as I am. I'm wondering whether to try to erase my device and start from scratch, which I'd just as soon avoid, or whether this is simply a VO bug in iOS 8.4 that has to be worked around. Thanks all. RE: A Definite Step Backwards for AudioBook Listeners in iOS 8.4 iBooks
Hello Keith, Generally speaking, there is no specific Apple-designated file extension for podcast files. Ifyou think about it, such an extension would work against Apple as most podcasters publish their podcast episodes using .mp3. To manually designate a .mp3 (music) file as a podcast, do the following: 1. Open iTunes on your computer. 2. Import the desired .mp3 file or files. They will appear in the Music area of your iTunes Library. 3. Locate the file or files and select them either one at a time or in a group. 4. Now, right-mouse click on the selected file or files. A list box will appear. 5. Select Get Info. A multi-tab dialog box will appear. 6. Select the Options tab. 7. In the Media Kind drop-down list box, select Podcast. 8. Save the changes. The file or files will now be moved, and consequently listed in the Podcast area of your iTunes library. So in your case the albums would be called Let me See Your Face,

RE: Follow-up about serious VoiceOver bug in iOS 8.4
Hello Molly, Thank you so much for this feedback. You know, there is a visually displayed VoiceOver cursor that surrounds anything upon which VoiceOver is currently focused. If you have enough vision or have a sighted person available, can you let us know if the VoiceOver visual cursor is also skipping various elements as well? This is to say, is the VoiceOver visual cursor accurately following the speech output? Also, please enable the Reduce Motion feature. Finally, restart the phone, after having cleared/closed all open apps. See if this makes a difference. If you continue to experience this issue after having made the adjustments, described above, I would be interested in learning which wireless provider you use. I've discovered that often, when using a swipe right or swipe left to move through a message in Mail, or even when doing a two-finger swipe up to read the entire message, some entire paragraphs can be skipped. The only way to tell that this is happening is by reviewing the message multiple times to look for missed text. For me, I prefer the links. I want to see the most recent up to date text and also read up on any comments or reviews that might also be on the web site or follow any links to order the product or get more information. It's probably obvious, but you're just stating your own personal opinion. Whether a feature in an assistive scanning application, that you don't find in an off the shelf application, is worth the price depends on how important the feature is to you and how much you're willing to pay for it. This is something each person has to decide for themselves. On 07/03/2015 09:52 PM, John Diakogeorgiou wrote: All the assistive scanning software for Windows are a waste of money. I agree. Sure, if you're not interested in a particular feature, then you could say it's just there to drive up the price, but others might not find that feature so frivolous. Either way, it's up to each person to decide whether they want to pay for those features or not. Jango has dozens of curated playlists. Apple Music simply copies the best ideas from other iPhone music apps and combines them with the phone's MP3 player and sells the package. Add to library or add to playlist?t
In the for you section, I actually found a playlist I like. It seems I have a choice of adding this to my library or to my music. I certainly don't want to make it available off-line, as I want only those items I purchased to be available off-line so as not to confuse things and get DRM or I don't wanted. I've discovered that often, when using a swipe right or swipe left to move through a message in Mail, or even when doing a two-finger swipe up to read the entire message, some entire paragraphs can be skipped. The only way to tell that this is happening is by reviewing the message multiple times to look for missed text. RE: Follow-up about serious VoiceOver bug in iOS 8.4
Hello Craig and All, I have been following this thread and can confidently say that I am not experiencing this particular VoiceOver issue. I have attempted to recreate this problem on two 6 Plus phones running iOS 8.4, to no avail. I would ask all of you experiencing this issue to confirm that you have your display font size set to normal and to turn off zoom mode, if, in fact, you have it turned on. Also, please enable the Reduce Motion feature. Finally, restart the phone, after having cleared/closed all open apps. See if this makes a difference. If you continue to experience this issue after having made the adjustments, described above, I would be interested in learning which wireless provider you use. The two carriers on which I tested this issue are A T T Wireless and Sprint. Re: I'd have to say that looking for classical music in Apple music is something of a bust
Neal and others, I am far from happy with my classical music listening on the net. Even the high-priced TIDAL app does not provide specific labeling of artists, orchestras, etc. For instance, a performance of Beethoven's 5th symphony may be listed as conducted by Herbert von Karajan; but if he has conducted one version with the Vienna Philharmonic and another with the Berlin Philharmonic, I would like to know which one I am listening to. I realize that services such as My Music, TIDAL, and Spotify are dealing with databases whose labelings they cannot change. Nevertheless, I reserve the right to be frustrated. Since this thread came up yesterday, I did a search on the Bach Brandenburg concertos from the Academy of St. Martin In The Fields, which I purchased on CD at Tower Records in Westwood back in 1994. I promptly added it to my library, then went looking for some of my favorite Mozart string quartets and found some, but I don't know if they match the recordings that I also bought at Tower. I'm still very interested in what the new Apple Music service has to offer but will reserve judgment regarding going beyond the free trial. RE: A Workaround FollowUp To: A Definite Step Backwards for AudioBook Listeners in iOS 8.4 iBooks
Hello Daniel, This was an excellent suggestion; one that I had considered earlier but had not yet tested. However, upon reading your post, I did test your suggestion and am sorry to say that the results were no different from those experienced with .mp3 files. The problem is with the iBooks app, not the files, themselves. The developers must allow iBooks to display individual track titles, when provided. Both the native music and podcast apps respect such metadata. My personal opinion is that the developers probably did not take into account that people like to make their own audiobook volumes consisting of various episode titles. My hope is that, should enough people report the oversight, it will be corrected in iOS 9. Can I offer another suggestion? Instead of converting the files to MP3, convert them to him for a, but change the eight to a beat. That way they'll be tagged as an audiobook, and should theoretically have your title is intact. Just a suggestion though, I'm not sure if that will work. By the way, as stated in my previous post, I did submit a bug report to Apple about this issue. Today, during a very pleasant phone discussion with an extremely kind list member, who responded to my request for a Voice Dream Reader conversation, it occurred to me that, as a workaround, instead of tagging the .mp3 files as audiobooks, via iTunes, I could simply change the media type to Podcast, instead. Then, after syncing my iOS device as I would normally do, simply listen to the manually-created audiobooks, complete with chapter heading or individual episode title navigation intact, using the native Apple Podcast app. I am delighted to say that this workaround is working perfectly in iOS 8.4. Taylor Sent: Tuesday, June 30, 2015 11:52 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: A Definite Step Backwards for AudioBook Listeners in iOS 8.4 iBooks Hello Everyone, This post comes under the heading of look before you leap: I enjoy downloading old-time radio dramas such as the Mystery Theater and Beyond Midnight as .mp3 files, then tagging them as Audio Books in iTunes and then listening to them in the native iOS app. So, for example, I have three episodes from the Beyond Midnight radio series. At first, I thought this was an oversight until I did a search on Google and discovered the following excerpt from Mac Rumors that described this issue back near the beginning of the beta cycle: [Begin Excerpt] Currently, in iOS 8.3, a users' audiobook library is divorced from their ebook library, forcing users to use two different apps to access their entire digital book library. The new update consolidates all books in Apple's iBooks app and also fixes another longstanding issue with audiobooks on iOS. Since iOS 7, audiobook listeners have been unable to view chapter titles or even select them. RE: A Definite Step Backwards for AudioBook Listeners in iOS 8.4 iBooks
Hello Frank, Thank you so much for your very thoughtful reply and for your precisely stated options. Finding my Puppy!
Hallo to the Viphone Community, Seeing as many of us will have Guide dogs, I was wondering if anyone has found a good app which will allow them to find their dog in open spaces? I have a new, non professional, puppy. We also have a largish plot of land, about an acre, with lots of bushes and trees etc. I have put a little bell on his collar, but often don't know where he has gone. He is still very young and so doesn't know to come to me when called. I have been looking at various apps that work alonside a device, to help find him, but most of them are geared to GPS and a map for location. I am looking for something that will allow me to point my phone in a sort of scanning mode to help me locate him by, say, buzzing, when I am pointing in the right direction and, perhaps, indicating the distance? Is anyone using such an app and, if so, what is it and what Bluetooth/GPS device are you using? Thanks in advance from me and puppy Lupin! Maybe there is someone out there who has a sided significant other who uses a Roku and with us have access to it with the iPhone app who has tried this. Re: Finding my Puppy!
The most you need is a remote controlled sound device so you press a button, not an iDevice thing, just an IR or radio transmitter so that it makes the receiver on the dog, beep or something, and just listen for it. If he's gone too far for that, you're in trouble anyway. Even battery-powered door bells would do this. A smallish one if it's a puppy! There are keychain finders which do the same and are smaller to go on a key chain. Something to press and something else to make a noise to centre in on. Gestures incartunesplayer don't work
Hi Since I put some music back on my ipad after the latest update, I finally wanted to try the cartunesplayer. Unfortunately, it either doesn't work, or I'm just to incompetent. :-( I disabled voiceover but the gestures don't do anything. I neither get a song started with a double tap. NOr does the title change when sweeping left or right. Any ideas what could be the problem.? Guenni -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Ap layout... moving aps in the apple watch.
Hi all. So I'm trying to sort my aps on the apple watch... moving the aps I don't use to the end of the list etc. But, when I go to the apple watch ap on my iPhone... ap layout... when I think I've moved an ap to where I want it then flick... the order the aps are when flicking is different from the order when I move my finger around the screen. Perhaps I'm not explaining myself very well... but how does one successfully move aps around? Isn't it just like moving them on the ipone home screen? Again, I'm using the apple watch ap on my phone. Thanks for any assistance. Jenifer Barr Sent from my iPhone -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. Battery drain on my 6 since 8.4
Hi, This may even be true of my phone since 8.3, but, certainly, since 8.4, my battery is draining alarmingly since I upgraded. Sandy. Re: Anna's apple watch book
Hello Daniel, I am pasting the pertinent information from Anna's email that was sent to the list regarding her book which should have all the information: Watching Without Looking: A VoiceOver User's First Month with the Apple Watch. is available at http://watchingwithoutlooking.wordpress.com It's in ePub, so it will work in ibooks, Voice Dream Reader, and any other software or hardware that plays unprotected ePub files. Hope that helps On 7/3/15, Daniel Miller miller...@gmail.com wrote: Hello. Can anybody give me a link and more information on where to find Anna's book on the Apple Watch? Re: Battery drain on my 6 since 8.4
I haven't checked, but sometimes after an upgrade, some battery hungry services are turned back on. Double check your screen brightness, bluetooth and so on.
