Re: question on emoji

2019-11-19 Thread turab chimthanawala
Hi all,
I too have the same query as Shirley.
Also, since the IOS 13 update, while browsing the Emojis, VO says
'alternative characters'. What are they? and How does one use them?
Thanks
Best

Re: Keyboard command to go to notification center

2019-11-19 Thread Justin Harris
How odd. That one isn’t working for me. Not sure if it’s a bug, or an issue
with my keyboard. My keyboard seems to be styled after the Magic keyboard but
it says there are shortcuts specific to iPad os, so I really wonder if some of
these could be causing the problem with VO as well as with other apps. Also,
strangely enough, in commands, it will let me delete, but not modify anything
or add anything new.
Thanks.

Hi Justin,
The command is Function (FN) key with VO keys and Up Arrow. Check the user
guide, which you can get from the Apple Book store.

RE: Any improvements for voice over in 13.2.3

2019-11-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There are bugs one can work around and some one can't.
I did actually forget about the dictation issue, this actually is a
super-annoying issue and there is no work-around except to take a Bluetooth
keyboard and type the message, so yes, I guess that is a work-around but only
if I am near my Bluetooth keyboard. Of course for people who only speak/use
English this is not a problem.

Keyboard command to go to notification center

I thought the keyboard command to go to either notifications or control center

I also need to replace my phone, but unlike you, my screen is still working,

Subject: Need to replace iPhone 8 looking for pros/cons of iPhone 11 vs iPhone X

Hi,

Recently my Iphone 8 has been suffering from some battery issues (not holding a
charge), plus two weeks ago the screen cracked, so it looks like it is time to
upgrade my phone.

According to verizon, I can get an iPhone 11 64gb for the same monthly payment

My questions are:

1. Have enough of the bugs been shaken out of the iPhone 11 series to make it
a reasonable choice?
2. Would the iPhone X series be a better choice?

How hard is it to get used to not having an actual home button? I know that
the iPhone X/XR/XS don't have the actual home button, and a friend let me try
her ipad without the home button and it seemed difficult to navigate without
the physical button.

Also, which case would everyone suggest for the 11 or X depending on which I

Any suggestions/reccommendations are greatly appreciated.

question on emoji

2019-11-19 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi All,

When you go to the emoji keyboard on the iPhone when you are composing a
text message. As you go across the different faces it will say something
like smiley face and then a number like 20. It says a different number after
each face. What are the numbers for. I thought maybe the numbers were some
kind of shortcut to post the emoji. Does anyone have any idea what the
number by each emoji is for?

Mr. Ed

Re: Need to replace iPhone 8 looking for pros/cons of iPhone 11 vs iPhone X

2019-11-19 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
I really like my iPhone 8. I don't think it is slow at all. I can
download bard books pretty quickly even though our wifi isn;'t the
best. It doesn't seem slow to me at all. I've only had my iPhone 8
for a few months and I've still got a lot to learn, but I can put
audio books or described movies on my phone thanks to voice dream
reader, and the bard mobile app is great. I really like my google
assistant and my google play music. It is very cool when I'm out and
about if I want to listen to my favorite song or artist, to just bring
up google assistant and listen to my music or internet radio station
just like I would on my full sized google home. The quality of phone
calls and being to use a bluetooth speaker for calls and audio book
playback is also a lot of fun.

Re: Creating shortcut keys in iPad os

2019-11-19 Thread Justin Harris
Hi Anna,
I took a look in there, but couldn’t find anything that would let me create a
new shortcut like the ones I used to be able to create on Mac to be able to
launch certain apps with just a hot key.
Maybe this isn’t possible yet.

Hi Justin,

On any iOS device, you can assign keyboard shortcuts to many things by going to
Settings/Accessibility/VoiceOver/Commands.

Cheers,
Anna

Creating shortcut keys in iPad os

Actually I thought the same kind of thing just after I wrote that question in
the email :)

Going from a keyboard to a touch screen is probably a bigger change than simply
dealing with not having the physical button on the phone, so I will forge ahead.

Thanks

Re: Need to replace iPhone 8 looking for pros/cons of iPhone 11 vs iPhone X

2019-11-19 Thread Justin Harris
If I may, when I first considered getting the iPhone xs I wasn't sure about the
lack of a home button either. However, after having made the switch, I could
never go back. The gestures in place are quite intuitive. Face id is much
faster than touch id. All around, it's a much better experience. Granted there
are times face id doesn't register, but that's like once out of 50. The iPhone
8 is also slower than newer models. I wouldn't buy the same thing you already
have.

Re: OTR Apps Broken in iOS 13.all

2019-11-19 Thread 'Bill Gallik' via VIPhone
The issue with several OTR apps is that it is impossible to select a specific
program episode once you’ve picked the season. Here’s the scenario:

- open the Gunsmoke app
- select the season (i.e. 1952)
- Now, trying to select a specific episode from 1952 is impossible with
VoiceOver in play
- shutting down VoiceOver will allow one to select an episode, it’s just that
if totally blind there’s no way to know which episode you’re activating
- if VoiceOver is left on in the “Select Episode” list it appears the cursor is
stuck on the status line.
- Shutting off VoiceOver to select just any episode will play a random episode,
but turning VoiceOver back on while streaming the randomly selected episode
results in annoying alarm sounds with still no possibility of selected a
specific episode

This is the case with the OTR apps from Appsstation!

Subject: OTR Apps Broken in iOS 13.all

With the advent of iOS Ive become an Old Time Radio fan and have several OTR
apps (i.e. , Johnny Dollar, Challenge of the Yukon, etc).

However, since Ive installed iOS 13 on my iPhone 8, these apps no longer work
effectively with VoiceOver. Apparently, a number of these apps are essentially
the same program - only being named differently to identify the suite of OTR
episodes to access (eg, the Gunsmoke app accesses Gunsmoke episodes and the
Johnny Dollar app will likewise access only those specific episodes). Im able
to select the season (eg, Gunsmoke episodes from 1952) but when attempting to
select a specific episode the app seems to be stuck on the status line.

If I turn VoiceOver off, i can then select one of the episodes for that season,
but with no idea as to which episode im selecting. This is not a problem if
one can read the screen visually.

I have written to the developer of this app(s) and have not gotten any feedback.

For this reason, if anybody is still using a pre-13 iOS and uses these apps I
urge them to not install iOS 13 of any version.

RE: Need to replace iPhone 8 looking for pros/cons of iPhone 11 vs iPhone X

2019-11-19 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Don,

Well, you ask an interesting question.

Now, this is just my opinion but, were I, you, I would go to the Apple Store
and purchase a new unlocked iPhone 8 / 8 Plus and be done with it.

It is my hope that next year will see a new set of hardware interactive
features
Added to iPhone. Again, this is just my opinion and Lord knows, I've been
wrong in the past.

So, as for me, as long as Apple continues selling a model with a traditional
Home button, I will probably continue to buy it.

Having said this, I do use an iPhone 11 and it is a very nice model. The sound
quality is excellent and after a few days, one can definitely begin to get used
to the lack of a traditional Home button.

I am making now on the iPhone 8.

Also, which case would everyone suggest for the 11 or X depending on which I
get?

Any suggestions/reccommendations are greatly appreciated.

RE: Any improvements for voice over in 13.2.3

2019-11-19 Thread Albert Ruel
I too was frustrated by having to constantly return my rotor to Headings when
on a webpage, so I took the opportunity to assign the two-finger swipe right
and left to previous and next headings navigation. That way each time I'm in a
position to move by headings I don't have to worry about where the rotor is
pointed, I simply flick right or left with two fingers.

Thx, Albert

No issues with iOS 13 for me either.
Ok, one minor annoyance is I have to use the rotor to move to headings every
time in Safari to move by headings.
Prior to 13.2 VO remembered my setting and I could move by heading in safari
without first have to use the rotor.
Currently I run 13.2.3 and I really like iOS 13.
I really like the preset/profile feature to have individual settings per app
and they are automatically applied when that app is in the foreground.

Apple squashed quite a few bugs in 13.2 and as I said iOS 13 now works fine for
me.

Thanks,

Like that friend of mine that encounters the fade-in speech bug or the
dictation bug whereas your second dictation line behaves in another
installed language ... how would you wirkaround these bugs?
If one is using the native mail app constantly there is no way to rule the
focus. But if mail and notifications don't matter you there is no reason not
to update.

Sieghard

I do understand your statement very well but my iphone is a bit of a
newsticker for me and there are severe bugs in the notification center at
least for me in the 7 days I had used ios13.1.2. Moreover, some
notifications become sticky even since ios13.2.2 reported by several of my
friends.
I will certainly update to ios13.3 on condition that the mail and
notification focus bugs are gone. I hear positive rumors of ios13.3
betatesters that the notification bug is solved wait and see.

Hi Davy,

It is true that some synthesizers pronounce a few things in a funny way, Gun
in fact is simply spelled out as G U N by at least the American female SIRI
voice, haven't checked Samantha or the male voice, but I think I read Alex
still speaks it correctly.
A few mispronunciations to me are small annoyances but not reasons for not
upgrading and take advantage of potentially other new features. It could
even be the case that you have to upgrade to iOS 13 if you want to use
certain apps.
One example is the new ScripTalk Mobile app which is available in the US and
Canada and which can read prescription medication packages which have been
equipped with a special RFID tag by the pharmacy. That app won't work on
anything below iOS 13 and of course anybody who bought a new phone this fall
gets iOS 13 whether they want it or not.
The fact is that almost all of the major bugs like the one with Voiceover
going away after a phone call and not being able to use third-party software
keyboards have been resolved. There are still a few rotor and focus issues
in the Mail app when deleting messages, but those I also classify as
relatively minor and they definitely are not deal-breakers.
If you have to use a hearing aid I can understand how system sounds not
coming through the hearing aid can be more of an issue, but hopefully this
will also be soon resolved.
I can't comment in detail with respect to braille input and using braille
displays since I don't use either.

I am not replacing my SE for a few months, but as for the Home Button and not

Subject: Need to replace iPhone 8 looking for pros/cons of iPhone 11 vs iPhone X

Hi,

Recently my Iphone 8 has been suffering from some battery issues (not holding a
charge), plus two weeks ago the screen cracked, so it looks like it is time to
upgrade my phone.

According to verizon, I can get an iPhone 11 64gb for the same monthly payment
I am making now on the iPhone 8.

Also, which case would everyone suggest for the 11 or X depending on which I
get?

Any suggestions/reccommendations are greatly appreciated.

RE: Any improvements for voice over in 13.2.3

2019-11-19 Thread Carolyn
With my hearing aids, I have the problem of the haptics, but not with my little
cheapy Bluetooth that messes me up when s scrolling through, say Contacts. That
is why I intend to look into a Logitech one. I can navigate without problem
with my hearing aids, but the haptics come out of the phone's speaker. I have
navigation problems with my $6.80 cheapy Bluetooth, but the haptics come
through the headset, not the iPhone speaker. Would be nice if there could be
some kind of merger that would solve both problems.

Do you use Braille or hearing aids?
I am not sure if Braille input got fixed, I don't use it, but as far as I am
concerned the main issue otherwise was with hearing aids. Apart from that and a
few minor annoyances iOS 13.2.2 (haven't upgraded yet to 13.2.3) works very
well.

Need to replace iPhone 8 looking for pros/cons of iPhone 11 vs iPhone X

2019-11-19 Thread Donald Raikes
Hi,

Recently my Iphone 8 has been suffering from some battery issues (not
holding a charge), plus two weeks ago the screen cracked, so it looks
like it is time to upgrade my phone.

According to verizon, I can get an iPhone 11 64gb for the same monthly
payment I am making now on the iPhone 8.

My questions are:

1. Have enough of the bugs been shaken out of the iPhone 11 series to
make it a reasonable choice?
2. Would the iPhone X series be a better choice?

How hard is it to get used to not having an actual home button? I
know that the iPhone X/XR/XS don't have the actual home button, and a
friend let me try her ipad without the home button and it seemed
difficult to navigate without the physical button.

Also, which case would everyone suggest for the 11 or X depending on
which I get?

Any suggestions/reccommendations are greatly appreciated.

Bill,

I'm sorry you're having issues with the specific OTR program apps and iOS 13.x.
The app OTR Streamer seems to be working fine in iOS 13.2.3 but I don't know
how it compares with the specific OTR program apps in terms of content or
quality.

RE: InstaPot with iOS App Access

2019-11-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I just had another look on Amazon Canada and for now it seems the Instant Pot
Smart WiFi is back from third-party sellers and actually for not too bad of a
price. It is listed for $199.99 regular and currently on sale for $149.99, but
no free prime delivery and a $16 shipping fee in addition to the price.
Last time I looked maybe 6 or 8 weeks ago I also saw it from third party
sellers, but it was over $300 Canadian.
Given the current exchange rate from Canadian to US Dollars the regular US
price of $149.99 is pretty much exactly $200 give or take $5, so it is the same
as the regular price in the US.
If you can get it for $89.99 US on sale that would be about $120 Canadian so
still $30 or 20% cheaper than the sale price here and if you factor in the $16
shipping it's a $46 difference.
Still that isn't so bad, I put it in my cart, but I think I'll wait a week and
see if there is a better Black Friday or Cyber Monday deal and if there is I
may break down and buy one. I could then sell our stand-alone rice cooker and
slow cooker, both are pretty good quality and I may get $60 or $70 for both of
them so if I could get the Instant Pot for $129.99 or even $139.99 Canadian I
might do that.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Yes, you can get a good deal on the Wifi model of the Instapot. That is how I
bought mine back in July. It was for $89.99. I use my pot weekly. I don't
normally set it from the phone, although they have improved that. I use the
buttons, which beep when pressed, and just get confirmation from the app on my
phone.

RE: Announcing the Launch of ScripTalk Mobile for iPhone

2019-11-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It is used by Apple Pay to communicate with the card terminal, but it’s a
passive technology since here in Canada all credit cards and debit cards have
chips embedded in the card which allow for the card to be simply tapped to the
terminal for transactions under $100 to be approved. For larger amounts you
still have to insert the card and enter your PIN for security.
In Vancouver all Skytrain transit faregates are also equipped with it and you
can simply tap your credit card to the correct place on the gate or hold your
iPhone up to it to unlock it. When you get to your destination you have to tap
again to get through the gate when leaving the Skytrain platform and at this
point your fare is calculated and charged to your credit card or Apple Pay.

Here is the best quick definition I found:
NFC stands for "Near Field Communication" and, as the name implies, it enables
short range communication between compatible devices. This
requires at least one transmitting device, and another to receive the signal. A
range of devices can use the NFC standard and will be considered either
passive or active.

I don’t think this requires any sort of internet connection since the
labels/tags are programmed with the information and the iPhone’s NFC chip is
used to read this information.
This is why this will only work with the iPhone 7 or later and currently it
appears that iPhone 11/11 Pro support is still in Beta.
This app also requires iOS 13, it will not work on devices which are still on
iOS 12 or earlier.
Currently it is available in the US and Canada.

And it was available on Samsung phones for years before Apple finally decided
to adopt it with the iPhone 6S, but it was very limited and the NFC chip was
locked down and could not be used by developers. This is why certain devices

an iPhone 7 which was the first phone where the NFC chip could be used by
developers for their own apps and devices/accessories.

NFC is shorthand for Near Field communications. It is an Apple feature
introduced several iOS versions ago - iOS 9.0 I believe. It is the
communication protocol that allows the placement of your iPhone physically
close to another iPhone or other appropriately equipped device to exchange
information such as using your iPhone to make payment at a properly configured
cash register (i.e. Apple Pay).

RE: Any improvements for voice over in 13.2.3

2019-11-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Davy,

It is true that some synthesizers pronounce a few things in a funny way, Gun in
fact is simply spelled out as G U N by at least the American female SIRI voice,
haven't checked Samantha or the male voice, but I think I read Alex still
speaks it correctly.
A few mispronunciations to me are small annoyances but not reasons for not
upgrading and take advantage of potentially other new features. It could even
be the case that you have to upgrade to iOS 13 if you want to use certain apps.
The fact is that almost all of the major bugs like the one with Voiceover going
away after a phone call and not being able to use third-party software
keyboards have been resolved. There are still a few rotor and focus issues in
the Mail app when deleting messages, but those I also classify as relatively
minor and they definitely are not deal-breakers.
If you have to use a hearing aid I can understand how system sounds not coming
through the hearing aid can be more of an issue, but hopefully this will also
be soon resolved.
I can't comment in detail with respect to braille input and using braille
displays since I don't use either.

Regards,

Re: OTR Apps Broken in iOS 13.all

2019-11-19 Thread 'Bill Gallik' via VIPhone
Well Richard, it won’t hurt to contact Apple with this issue. This problem has
Object Oriented Programming all over it. I suspect that Apple may have made a
very obscure change to the List Class and it has rendered this particular list
(episode list) inaccessible to VoiceOver.

I will contact Apple right away - thanks for the suggestion. Guess I should
have thought of it myself.

Subject: OTR Apps Broken in iOS 13.all

With the advent of iOS I’ve become an Old Time Radio fan and have several OTR
apps (i.e. , Johnny Dollar, Challenge of the Yukon, etc).

However, since I’ve installed iOS 13 on my iPhone 8, these apps no longer work
effectively with VoiceOver. Apparently, a number of these apps are essentially
the same program - only being named differently to identify the suite of OTR
episodes to access (eg, the Gunsmoke app accesses Gunsmoke episodes and the
Johnny Dollar app will likewise access only those specific episodes). I’m able
to select the season (eg, Gunsmoke episodes from 1952) but when attempting to
select a specific episode the app seems to be stuck on the status line.

If I turn VoiceOver off, i can then select one of the episodes for that season,
but with no idea as to which episode i’m selecting. This is not a problem if
one can read the screen visually.

I have written to the developer of this app(s) and have not gotten any feedback.

For this reason, if anybody is still using a pre-13 iOS and uses these apps I
urge them to not install iOS 13 of any version.

2019-11-19 Thread Sharonda Greenlaw
Yes, you can get a good deal on the Wifi model of the Instapot. That
is how I bought mine back in July. It was for $89.99. I use my pot
weekly. I don't normally set it from the phone, although they have
improved that. I use the buttons, which beep when pressed, and just
get confirmation from the app on my phone.

The ScripTalk Mobile app was designed with mobility and convenience in mind.
We think you will love both the "scan" and "quick scan" buttons. Scan tells
you all of your drug information and Quick Scan is a convenient way to hear
only the drug name announced. You can also use the History feature to review
your medications without having to scan them.

RE: Announcing the Launch of ScripTalk Mobile for iPhone

2019-11-19 Thread Richard Turner

OTR Apps Broken in iOS 13.all

2019-11-19 Thread 'Bill Gallik' via VIPhone

RE: why did my orientation lock turn itself off?

2019-11-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It has never done so for me although I haven't had it on recently. Are you
absolutely sure you didn't go to control centre for something else and maybe
you accidently turned it off?
Otherwise I'd just keep an eye on it and see if it happens again.

However, my question is why did it turn itself off in the first place?
I didn't turn it off. I went back into control center and turned it back on.
I'm going to practice some typing and I needed it lock.
Thanks for any help.

Apple squashed quite a few bugs in 13.2 and as I said iOS 13 now works fine for
me.

Thanks,

Re: Any improvements for voice over in 13.2.3

2019-11-19 Thread Richard Turner
That is not normal behavior.
Have you done a screen share with Apple Accessibility and demonstrated that?
That has never happened with any iPhone I have ever handled, and that is quite
a few since I teach people how to use it and am often going through the sound
settings on their phones.

One of the Most annoying bugs for me is that the sound goes to the iPhone
speaker anytime I go to change any setting in sounds and haptics even though i
am using the earbuds, worse than that, the phone rings even if I am not
anywhere near the sound volume settings.

I can't tell any difference in VoiceOver.

Also, there still remains the problem that when using Bluetooth through hearing
aids, the sounds go through the iPhone speaker, but not with a regular
Bluetooth set.

Hi folks,

Any improvements in voice over performance in iOS 13.2.3? The description does
not mention voice over at all. This has been apple’s policy since the release
of iOS 13, which is to ignore accessibility concerns. I noticed that the email
delete bug still persists.

Regards,

Cris
