Can someone please tell me how to check the battery status on my Apple TV
Remote?

We recently purchased a new remote, and it is currently pluged in to charge
it. Just not sure how to determine when it is fully charged.

Thanks.

Hi there,
I?ve noticed when I am on messenger, when I double tap on someone?s name to
send a message, focus changes, and I i?m looking at a different profile, if
that makes any sense.
For example, if it says, John and Bill are online, if I double tap on Bill?s
profile, John?s profile will come up.

Most of the time, when I make a call and am asked to push a number for an
extension, the iPhone works fine; however, in a few instances, the caller
requests me to push a number and I can't get to the keypad, it's not showing.
If I go to the phone and get to the keypad and press a number, still nothing
happens to complete the request the caller is making?

Any help would be appreciated.

Just another quick question; I am buying the watch from the Apple Store, should

I know that it is a very simple process to eliminate the sound that occurs when
you run your finger down the screen but, for
the life of me, I can?t even remember where that sound setting is or I would

I looked in Sounds and Haptics and in General and didn?t find the setting in

I am using an SE2020 with 15.1.

Could someone please remind me as to what the sound is called and where you can
turn it off?

Many thanks for any assistance.

Re: Glucose monitor?

2021-04-12 Thread Ari Moisio

Hi

My wife has used Libre2 with IOs app at least two months. However the
sensor lifetime is still two weeks, at least here in Finland.

The alerts are quite unreliable and the connection is often lost.

Hello Ann and all,
I recently started using the Freestyle Libre 14 day system product from Abbott.
I highly recommend this product. I downloaded the Libre link app on my iPhone.
The app is easy to use. You do not need to buy the reader unless you want a
sighted person to look at your readings. I use my iPhone to monitor all of my
data.
I recently got my insurance company to purchase my sensors. I have a small
co-pay.
Here is a link that can get you started:

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Yeah in the US the libre last 10 days,

Here in Nz and in the UK and I believe everywhere else

The free style libre last 14 days.

Yes the NFC chip is what the sensors and the phone use to communicate however
there is a device available for each of the
products that allows them to talk using blutetooth to your phone.

The Dexcom is I believe their own product

The freestyle uses a third party product called the miaomiao

I believe this is Chinese but that?s only a guess.

With this product currently or still I believe you have to either jailbreak
your phone or set the software up as an apple
ddeveloper.

this may have changed in the passed couple of months but it was like this when
I started using the freestyle 6 months ago.

The bt dongles for the devices do cost but they let your phone talk to your
sensors without having to worry about the
manual  swiping

According to one of my clients, the Dexcom is accessible.

Both types need at least an iPhone 7 because they use the NFC chip that was
introduced starting with the 7.

Their apps make it so a blind person doesn?t need their expensive stand-alone
device to scan the patch.

I think the Freestyle ones last longer but if the app doesn?t have an alarm, I
can see why the doctor is leaning toward the
Dexcom.

Though, you may want to double check the specifications for each one to make
sure that feature hasn?t been added.

Hi all,

Yes, this is very much iPhone related.  I have a question about two glucose
readers.  One is the Freestyle Libre and the
other is the Dexcom.  I know that the Libre app is accessible but I don't know
anything about the Dexcom.  My doctor wants
me to get the Dexcom because it has alarms and the Libre does not.  The
downside of it is that you have to enter in codes
every so often.  To me, if it is accessible that doesn't really matter because
there is always Aira or some way to work that
out.  I also noticed that the Libre link app does not work on the 6 S.  Anyone
know why?  Or do you have a customer service
number?  Does anyone have any answers or where I can go to find out more?
Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I too am waiting for the release of the Freestyle LibreLink app in the US App
Store. I currently am using the
TapTapSee application to capture a image of the screen and read the bg reading
to me. This works well enough for now
but it will be nice to have the app on the phone with the Voice Alerts active.
This feature is used to read the
current scanned blood sugar. It will also announce the direction such as slowly
falling, raising slowly, etc. From
what I have read on some of the Diabetes forums the app is fully accessible
with VoiceOver and it is pretty simple to
use. Here?s to hoping!

Hi Jeff,
For some reason since you have joined this group your emails do not come into the
VIPhone group correctly. Let me see if I can explain it to you. When I have emails
come into my email client Outlook I have folders set up for each of my groups that I
belong too. So when emails come in from each group they go into the correct folder.
Your emails do not do that. The reason is your emails says in the from field: From:
jedbar...@gmail.com [mailto:jedbar...@gmail.com] On Behalf Of Jed Barton. Now I am
going to paste another email from someone else's email from the From field:
viphone@googlegroups.com; on behalf of; Sieghard Weitzel . As
you can see his email start with vIphone and yours does not. I don't know how you
have this setup to do this but your email is the only one that does this out of
hundreds of emails I get from the vIphone group. Could you please look at this and
see why this is.
Thank you for your assistants.

I was just wondering if anyone else is having problems with the
announcement

of their incoming notifications. Since upgrading to iOS 11, any time a
notification comes in, VO just announces the time instead of reading
the notification. Other than my notification dilemma, I?m really
impressed with

the responsiveness of VO on my 7 Plus. Also, this was the fastest I?ve
ever

been able to download the upgrade using iTunes. It came in at right
around 5

minutes. Now on to explore some more new features.

Hi

Basically you select the rotor what function up/down swipe will do and you
have probably selected move by headings. Try to select some other
movement with the rotor.

To use the rotor image a big, round coin at the center of the screen. now
move two fingers around the edge of this imaginary coin like tryin to
rotate it.
(Dont put a real, physical coin on the screen, it will not work) Maybe a
round cookie will do:-).

Volume buttons are push buttons and they usuaaly affect the sound that
is currently playing so is you want to adjust volume level of certain
pplication make sure VO is not talking at the same time.

Help! I was playing around to see how the roter worked. It seemed
complicated because in settings there is a lot to do with the roter. I went
to some screen, maybe the home page and simply tried to make the gesture. I
stopped or tapped on heading. Now every screen I'm on says no heading
found. How do I get rid of that?
Also how do you get to the volume control wherever you are? There is
supposed to be a physical place on the phone to turn it up or down on the
left edge at the top - I'm using an old 4S - but though I feel a few tiny
little switches, they don't seem to move. I find a volume button a lot but
often I'm on a page without one, or maybe I'm just missing it, like the back
button which is sometimes hard for me to find and other times I can keep
moving back and back.
As for the learning curve even with a book, it's 3 steps forward, 2
steps back.

Works with iOS 8 with limitations. Apple does their best to support older hardware,
and does a better job than Google and Microsoft. Good luck getting the latest
version of Android working on a four year old Android phone. I also used to
have similar problems getting new versions of Windows working on four year old
computers.

The fact is, technology is always changing. Moore's Law states that device
power will double every 18 months. So, a four year old device, such as an
iPhone 4S, is the great grandfather to the iphone 6 (three generations ago).

Well, first at all, i'm not sure why people will upgrade t heir 4s to ios8.
There are some key eatures on ios8 that won't be supported by iphone 5c and
below, and some are quite exclusive to 6 and 6+.
And again, all these support or not supported, for which phones and which
ios, it is not something new. It is the same old same old arguement from
pretty much the first gen of iphone to now.
People constently have problems reported from an old phone upgraded to the
new ios.
It is expected.
Apple does say that ios8 can be install on 4s. But if there is no
slaggishness, then, people won't keep upgrading their phone as the new ios
come out, will they.
Apple do that for a reason, they don't just release a new ios out from no
where, just because they can.

If you want to upgrade, that is your choice. But be prepare for te
slaggishness. And, if you do upgrade for a 4s to ios8, and knowing very well
that there are problems, stop complaining about it either...

The one bug I would add that is not presently in that article,
is that sometimes answering a call with a two-finger

Well, with a $100 androy phone you will find that it is more than
likely is not Talkback comparable, because of whatever overlay that
they have on top of Google Stock Androy, and more than likely will
stop at Androy 4.22, which is a crap Androy OS when come to
accessibility. Yes, you can get it work, but is that really worth it,
that is another issue.
Of course, one could argue that it only cost $100, as compare to
$1000 for an upgrade. If you have that mind set, go ahead, nothing
stopping you on switching over to Androy.
Just bare in mind, whatever phone you choose to get for Androy
platform, make sure you get Androy 4.3 and above. The best entry and
low end level phone for Google Stock Androy is Moto G or Moto E, which
is between $200 and $350 (depending on specific model.

In another word, Androy is good to see, good to touch, is great as a
secondary phone even. But, not all Androy phones are accessible for
the blind. That is the bottom line of the Androy OS.

Well, first at all, i'm not sure why people will upgrade t heir 4s to
ios8.
There are some key eatures on ios8 that won't be supported by iphone 5c
and
below, and some are quite exclusive to 6 and 6+.
And again, all these support or not supported, for which phones and
which
ios, it is not something new. It is the same old same old arguement from
pretty much the first gen of iphone to now.
People constently have problems reported from an old phone upgraded to
the
new ios.
It is expected.
Apple does say that ios8 can be install on 4s. But if there is no
slaggishness, then, people won't keep upgrading their phone as the new
ios
come out, will they.
Apple do that for a reason, they don't just release a new ios out from
no
where, just because they can.

If you want to upgrade, that is your choice. But be prepare for te
slaggishness. And, if you do upgrade for a 4s to ios8, and knowing very
well
that there are problems, stop complaining about it either...

Hi

Where you got these numbers? $35 would be believable if there is for
example a hardware keypad included for each and every iphone. Or if the
cost of accessibility are divided between the amount of blind iphone
users.

According Wikipedia there is about 500 millions iphones sold so the total
cost of accessibility is over 17 billion dollars.

When estimating $70 per hour this makes 156 thousand man-years of
development. Iphones have been on market about seven yearss what gives
the average esize of accessibility team a bit over 22000 employees. Are
there even so much blind iphones users out there?

Very easy answer.

First, accessibility costs a big lot of money and, if they calculate it at
$35 per phone, it amounts in billions.
Second, if Mr. Cook mentioned this at shareholders meeting is because the
shareholders wanted him to cut back on accessibility to save money and he
told them he would never do that. Let's be thankful he stood his ground.

Two questions come to mind.
1. Why does Apple have to spend $35 for every iPhone sold for
accessibility.
2. Why did Mr. cook feel it necessary to make that an issue at a
shareholders meeting.

On Sep 17, 2014, at 2:34 PM, David Chittenden dchitten...@gmail.com wrote:

Wow, what an interesting comparison. In reality, such devices have been
released. The first several devices were not at all accessible to the blind.
Therefore, your argument does not hold up to what actually happens. The fact
is, we are a very tiny group of people.

At work, we have a water filtration system which has multiple settings. the
system announces which type of water is coming out when it is started. It
does not announce the setting when being set. We have a few pieces of tape
on the face of the machine so I can find the start button.

My microwave oven has no announcements whatsoever. We marked the touch panel
with dots on the buttons, but I have no way of knowing for certain what I
have pressed until it is finished. The same is true with our washing machine
and dryer.

It is unfair to those of us who are blind, but we are not a viable market
for any mainstream product. Therefore, any bugs which effect VoiceOver only
are not major or showstopers for over 99% of Apple's market

And yet, Apple spends $35 per every iPhone sold for accessibility. This is
what was stated in April at a shareholder meeting by Tim Cook. This is not
an insignificant amount of money.

Now that the beta cycle is complete, send in those bug reports. The minor VO
only bugs can now be worked on more by Apple.

Oh, and as to the question about why doesn't Apple wait until all minor bugs
are fixed? Well, it is impossible to fix all bugs, so Apple would fall
behind as a company if they stop innovating in today's world. The majority
of those who buy products tend to purchase those products with the most
innovative useful features. For example, we just purchased a robotic vacuum.
We found a model which the base/recharging station empties the dirt from the
robot cleaner. This way, we only need to empty the dust from the bin in the
base station once a month or so. Much better than emptying the robot's
little dust cup after every use. Oh, and the robot needs to be programmed by
the sighted person. It does not have a blind-accessible interface.
Fortunately, the robotic lawnmower we are planning to purchase next year has
an iPhone app that appears to be accessible.

I did not say it had to be perfect, but consider this.
If you were developing a popular product that would drastically
decrease heart attacks, would you release it first with lots of bugs
for people who were blind just because it worked for people who see.
Would your company philosophy be that as long as it works for sighted
people it will be released even though it is not yet ready for people
who are blind? I don't expect it to be perfect, but I see no reason
why it is not just as stable for me as it is for my wife. Why am I
assumed to be impatient if I think people who are blind should have
equal access? Equal access means it works equally for both populations
when it is released. I think that is a reasonable assumption.

By the way, I did send a similar email to apple.

to the left. I've tried placing the phone in my pocket facing different
directions but doesn't seem to make a difference. Can someone who has used
blind square more give me some suggestions?
Lastly, does blind square seem to notify you more accurately when a

tracking it, or does it make a difference? Hope all this makes scence and
someone can give me some tips.

What is the point in that? Doesn't make a lot of sense to be completely
honest. You have to have a data plan in order to have a smart phone. You
can use it on Wi-Fi but you can't make phone calls or anything like that
which kind of defeats the whole purpose.

Personally, I have not heard this complaint for a couple years now, so forgot

tended to complain because many of those desired features were then crippled.

Um. Where to start? Well, if you don't want a smart phone, don't get one. If
you don't want to pay for a data plan, get an iPod Touch, or an iPad without
a data plan. What are those, you say? Hmmm. As for the virtual keyboards
they're not as fast for anyone as a regular keyboard. How fast was the old
method of using the teeny keys on a real phone keyboard or even the numpad
keys for typing letters? Not very. And why not use Siri to call a number?
What is Siri? Hmmm.

I will say that I have come across folks at my local blind center who
receive iPhones and haven't the slightest idea how to operate them. A
well-meaning person might have given it as a gift, but they ask me why they
can't do things more simply. Maybe for some, a bit more one-on-one attention
would have been a good idea.

having said this, I think this article is more than a tad condescending, if

For item 10, there are a few aids.

Go to settings, general, accessibility, home click speed, and select slow or
slowest.

Also in accessibility, one finds assistive touch which modifies the screen and
command structure for limited dexterity, switch control for either a bluetooth
switch, or using the front-facing camera to monitor a person's head movements
for switch activation, and guided access which limits what a person can do on
the iPhone / iOS device. One will also find several options for low vision
users, and options for users suffering from hearing loss.

A data plan will cost you about twenty dollars a month. You need a data plan
for the iPhone to be able to communicate over the Internet.
Response: you need to pay for a monthly plan to get anything on the Internet.
If a consumer already has an Internet connection in his home, he can buy an
iPod Touch or an iPad. These devices run iOS and don't require an additional
monthly data plan. The fact is that any computer or device that accesses the
Internet is usually going to require you to pay for some sort of access plan.

On the other hand you cannot use ipad as a phone. Most non-iphones works as a
phone without a data plan.

2. It is very inefficient to make a simple phone call with the iPhone,
particularly if you don't have a person in your contacts list. You can dial a
phone number that you know much more quickly with a keypad that has real,
physical buttons.
Response: not at all. You can simply press the home button and command siri to call any
number, such as saying call 302 555-1212. That's hardly what I'd call
inefficient. Also, a consumer can order screen protectors from Speeddots containing
tactile keyboard overlays.
Finally, the rivo keyboard, while insanely expensive, gives you a keypad
allowing for quick telephone entry and it also provides keyboard commands which
let you control many other functions of the iPhone.

We also had that kind on telephone services at early 70's where one had to
dictate the telephone number to the operator. Then we got the rotary dial and
after that the tone dial. That's why i consider Siri a bit old-fashion:-)

Even with different tactile screen protectors you cannot simply push harder to
press the button. Also each application will spread it's buttons around the
screen so every application you'll use needs it's own tactile layer. Good
business, i have to admit.

3. On the iPhone touch typing for texting and email is very slow as compared to
a regular keyboard; this has been somewhat mitigated by Braille apps, of which
there are now two. However, you should know that research has shown that, on
average, a blind person entering data using the touch-screen QWERTY keyboard is
writing at about three words per minute. By contrast, users of the built-in
Braille apps have been clocked at around 23 words per minute.
response: you can use any number of Bluetooth keyboards if you want to compose
a lengthy email or text

2. It is very inefficient to make a simple phone call with the iPhone,
particularly if you don't have a person in your contacts list. You can dial a
phone number that you know much more quickly with a keypad that has real,
physical buttons.
Response: not at all. You can simply press the home button and command siri
to call any number, such as saying call 302 555-1212. That's hardly what
I'd call inefficient. Also, a consumer can order screen protectors from
Speeddots containing tactile keyboard overlays.
Finally, the rivo keyboard, while insanely expensive, gives you a keypad
allowing for quick telephone entry and it also provides keyboard commands
which let you control many other functions of the iPhone.

We also had that kind on telephone services at early 70's where one had to
dictate the telephone number to the operator. Then we got the rotary dial
and after that the tone dial. That's why i consider Siri a bit
old-fashion:-)

Even with different tactile screen protectors you cannot simply push
harder to press the button. Also each application will spread it's buttons
around the screen so every application you'll use needs it's own tactile
layer. Good business, i have to admit.

3. On the iPhone touch typing for texting and email is very slow as compared
to a regular keyboard; this has been somewhat mitigated by Braille apps, of
which there are now two. However, you should know that research has shown
that, on average, a blind person entering data using the touch-screen QWERTY
keyboard is writing at about three words per minute. By contrast, users of
the built-in Braille apps have been clocked at around 23 words per minute.
response: you can use any number of Bluetooth keyboards if you want to
compose a lengthy email or text message. For short text messages, composing
one is as quick as dictating the text to Siri, just as you can use your voice
to place a call.

Keyboards are even bulkiert than the iphone itself. If i have to dictate
something i can call with same effort.

4. The iPhone is very much a technology requiring good hand-ear coordination.
People who want real buttons that they can operate silently by touch will be
very disappointed in the iPhone.
As I stated in a previous response, you can purchase affordable tactile
overlays from Speeddots. Besides, in the section in the article covering the
iPhone's strengths, it is stated correctly that the iPhone demonstrates, with
a properly designed user interface, that blind people can successfully
operate a touchscreen.

But people who prefer tactile buttons are still disappointed.

5. Battery life for the iPhone is still an issue. You have to charge it at
least once a day--a lot more if you use GPS.
Response: yes, I long for the days when products like the Braille 'n Speak
could give us 30 hours of battery life from one charge. However, this is a
non-issue. During the day, I connect my iPhone to my computer's USB port and
when I get home I connect it to my computer for a few hours before going to
bed. Turning off Bluetooth, if you're not using that service, and turning
your screen brightness down to zero percent will do a lot to save battery
life. Besides, it's not exactly a major inconvenience to plug the thing into
a computer or a wall outlet every night.

It depends if you have a computer or usb connector near you. For example
for a long bus or train journey if you like to follow your location on
gps there are not always a usb port to charge. GPS is especially power
hungry.

6. The iPhone is not small. It is bigger than a lot of flip phones.
response: are you serious? Really, are you kidding me? My wife's Motorola
Droid Ultra has a wider form factor. The iPhone fits very comfortably in one
hand. I mean, we're not talking about a device like an iPad or a Kindle 8.9
HDX.

Should i list here all the smaller phones i know?

7. For a lot of people the iPhone is a lot more technology than they want. It
is not for someone who just wants a phone to make and receive calls.
response: true, but once blind people discover that the iPhone can act as
their digital book player, restaurant menu reader, Web browser, email client,
money identifier,

For item 10, there are a few aids.

Go to settings, general, accessibility, home click speed, and select slow or
slowest.

Also in accessibility, one finds assistive touch which modifies the screen and
command structure for limited dexterity, switch control for either a bluetooth
switch, or using the front-facing camera to monitor a person's head movements
for switch activation, and guided access which limits what a person can do on
the iPhone / iOS device. One will also find several options for low vision
users, and options for users suffering from hearing loss.

In my opinion, the article reads like it was written by an amateur. Smile.

Has anyone read the June Braille Monitor? there is an article covering
the supposed pros and cons of the iPhone. I have to admit that it would
be very difficult for me to come up with a list of ten things which are
not good about the iPhone but this article supposedly did just that.
I plan to write a detailed blog post in the coming week with my
responses to the ten objections but I'll just say that it's one of the
most irresponsible pieces of journalism I've ever read from that
magazine. Please, understand that this is not meant as a bash about the
NFB vs any other organization or even a criticism of the Monitor.
However, the piece infuriated me because the NFB is a highly influential
organization and many of its members and readers of the Monitor will
take the article seriously just because it comes from a nationally
recognized blindness organization. My fear is that many people may read
this article and will be convinced to not buy an iPhone due to things
which the article claims are not good about the device.

Enabling keyboard seems to be quite random: sometimes navigating out and
in will help. Occasionally activating field multiple times may help.
Sometimes activating the field with VO-space instead of up-and-down arows
migth work and often entering first character with the touch screen will
enable the keyboard.

Sometimes the keyboard ceases to work middle of the word.

Every now and then the focus will be on a wrong field after activation.

Password fiels are the worst to get working.

Luckily Apple does not manufacture cars:-)

I don't understand the question. Of course Apple will work on voiceOver. It
isn't true that nothing has happened since IOS 7 was released. IOS 7.0.3
released at the end of October had multiple fixes in it related to VoiceOver
and accessibility. IOS 7.1, which is reported to come out shortly, has quite
a few changes and fixes in it, including many related to VoiceOver and
accessibility. Apple has also demonstrated over the past, with major updates
like IOS 6, IOS 5 and so on, that changes and improvements will be made to
VoiceOver and accessibility. To a lesser degree, this has also been
demonstrated with dot releases.

Apple isn't perfect, and there are multiple legitimate issues you could have
with Apple, but a statement implying that Apple hasn't or isn't going to work
on VoiceOver is simply false.

please could you give some examples of such controllers? as when I had a

screen, and nothing else. admittedly, this was over a year ago however.

Hi

On the other hand many gamers want precise and immediate interaction and
there are plenty of game controllers for the idevices available. I doupt
anyone has said that they just are not get used to the touchscreen:-)

Unfortunately until Apple puts any effort to general keyboard usability on
IOS devices these keypads do not help much except for making flicking and
double tapping faster and more prddictable. Apples's 1D approach for
screen navigation is extremely inefficient. 2D-way, exploring the screen
with one finger is faster but for efficient use one heve to memorize all
the controls on every screen of any application he/she uses.

It is a bit unfair to compare mobile phones to desktop computers but even
sighted ones works more efficiently with keyboard than mouse/touchscreen.

Using the touch screen as blind is similar to using an failing keyboard:
you have every time check that the key press gets through and it was the
correct key that wenth trough.

Re: Portable Bluetooth Keyboard Suggestions

Hi

Such mni-keyboard with arrow keys and most essential VO command keys would
be handy especially for us whose dads din't work on a nuclear plant - ie

I also prefer to keep the phone in a pocket. It is not advisable

Some game controller such as iMpulsecontroller would be handy if it could
be tuned a bit but of course it requires there are enough intersted

I know Apple has a portable bluetooth keyboard but they tend to be a bit
pricy so hopefully there is a good after market solution.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi

I use solely the apple bt keyboard. I have tried Bowwave and the RII

I'm also looking for a small bt remote controller if it could be

that can be made to make a noise so as to locate them? I used to have
something like this, but it was not an app. You had a small box that was a
transmitter and several small receiver objects you could attach to things
like a water bottle and you could press a button and cause the module
attached to the water bottle Etc. to make a noise. Is there such a thing
that can be interfaced with the iPhone?

Impulsecontroller

2013-12-21 Thread Ari Moisio

Hi

I found an interesting miniature game controller,
http://www.impulsecontroller.com/
and ordered it to check it it could be used something useful too:-)

At least one can use it as arrow keys to navigate in VO but unfortunately
one cannot make the double tap although latest firmware will have a home
button equivalent.

It would be handy to have only a small remote controller in hand instead
of bulky, fragile and stealprone phone:-)

I have contacted the developer if there would be some way to re-define
the keys
but got no response so far.

Anothher possibility would be to hijack the Audio/Video Remote Control
Profile (AVRCP) keystrokes and use them to navigate within VO. The
impulsecontoller can send them also.

Alright, I'm going to throw this out there. I'm hoping someone can offer
some thoughts on this.
I am looking at a dispatcher position for a fire department. I've
dispatched for a long time and am all about creativity when it comes to
getting a job done. One of the requirements, you have to read 2 different
meters for fire alarm circuits to get voltages. In our technologically
advanced world, there has to be a way this could be done. With all the apps
out there, can anyone think of a way to do this? It's older equipment, but
I would guess there has to be a way to take a picture of the meter in
question.
Any thoughts on this?

What settings do I need to make sure the app is set to in order to get it to

particular setting, or some combination of things?

Weird. Only explanation i can think that iPhone will uncopress the image

This makes no sense because uncompressing the image does not improve it's

Re: BlindSquare, A Disappointment

2013-10-28 Thread Ari Moisio

Hi

With Blindsquare this should not matter because both of it's map resources
are globally available.

IMO there is market and need for blind-specific navigation applications.
Reason is very simple: sighted has only to look the visual map to get
information. For us there should be either quick commands to get needed
information or let the application babble all the time.

Personally i prefer the former approach.

Yes, this is part of what I am talking about. The blindness specific GPS apps
are primarily focused on US, Canada, and UK.

Apple Maps, Google Maps, and general market GPS apps cover many more countries.

With the blindness focussed apps, one pays significantly more for significantly

Re: BlindSquare, A Disappointment

2013-10-28 Thread Ari Moisio

Hi

The POI density of FS varies wildly. For example here inf Finland there
is almost 100 POIS per square kilometer at the Helsinki capitol area but
at northern or eastern areas less than 0.1 POIs perm km2.

Quality of the POIs also varies.: i have noticed about one third of the
POIs are quite pointless (pun intended): private homes tagged something

else than private homes, lot of moving targgets not tagged so etc.

Accuracy is adequate to find out what is nearby but usually one needs good
OM skills to find the entrance.

Openstreetmap is a different story. Although we are talking about
countries where a blind person can afford an iPhone and could
expect than joe Average can afford a smartphone too. However fro OSM
mapping satellite and aerial images are used a lot, also dedicated gps
loggers.

I cannot talk about OSM coverage globally but here in Finland when i have
compared OSM maps and Finnish national land survey maps OSM coverage is
quite good.

Well, for POI, FourSquare is reliant on its users checking in to places to
identify those places. In the US, many sighted people check in to places with
FourSquare. In NZ, on the other hand, some areas have many places marked whilst
other areas have only a few, or no places marked. Australia is better marked
than NZ, at least for large cities, but smaller towns are not marked very well
at all.

The same is true for the free user-identified street maps. Outside heavy
smartphone use areas where people are marking streets, nothing will be
identified. Therefore, even though Blind Square accesses worldwide data,
the data is not readily available outside the US, Canada, UK, and parts
of Western Europe.

Apple Maps and Google Maps actually access better map data. The same is true
for other general market GPS apps which are sold for specific countries.

With Blindsquare this should not matter because both of it's map resources are

IMO there is market and need for blind-specific navigation applications.
Reason is very simple: sighted has only to look the visual map to get
information. For us there should be either quick commands to get needed
information or let the application babble all the time.

Personally i prefer the former approach.

Yes, this is part of what I am talking about. The blindness specific GPS apps
are primarily focused on US, Canada, and UK.

Apple Maps, Google Maps, and general market GPS apps cover many more countries.

With the blindness focussed apps, one pays significantly more for significantly
less.

Points of interest? Yes it announces them, just not streets and intersections,

I?m considering buying blindsquare and have two questions. First is it
possible to mark points of interest without having a 4square account? If it
is not possible to do this am I correct that you can create a 4square
account with no friends and marked as private so no one can see your
points? Second some of the comments I read stated that the app uses the
cumpus for direction which doesn?t work well if the phone is in a pocket.
Is this still the case or is it possible to use GPS only for direction?

Re: blindsquare and some frustration and a question.

Hi Fred

I afraid there is not such aplication. Blindsquare/Foursquare has quite
good database of different POIs but if none of Foursquare users haven
never visited on a business or the business owner don't know or care about
Foursquare visibility the business could not be found there.

Probably only way to find out most of the places around is to have some

description of what's around me, however not so. I wanted to add a point of
Interest to blind square, but that appears to not be possible. I travel up and

I'm not a power user of Blind Square. I do like that when I'm walking
or riding places, it tells me the intersections I'm coming up to.

Depending on how you have your settings, you can hear what businesses
are around you. And it's very easy to toggle those on and off.

I haven't run a search for anything, though I see you can.

Blind Square gets its information from 4-Square, so, if you haven't
already, you will need to download that free app as well.

Hope this helps.

If you ask for a simple division result how did Siri know you were speaking

That would be truly amazing.

Hi,

I decided to see if Siri would do a calculation for me yesterday. We had
just filled the tank on our vehicle and I wanted to check the mileage we
were getting.

I brought up Siri and said calculate 381 divided by 12.5. When she came
back she told me the answer but also continued with much more info. She
even gave a comparison between European cars and U. S. cars. She also gave
several alternative forms of calculation.

My wife and I were both totally amazed and laughing our heads off.

Try it yourself, you'll probably find her results amusing too.

Raul, I have a question about the Amazon basics Bluetooth keyboard sense I
ordered mine. It won't be here until Monday because I chose free super saver
shipping. What I'd like to know is, when the keyboard is connected to my
iPhone, will I still have the screen active as well? In other words, if I
touch the screen of my iPhone will I still hear voice over? I'm sure I'll
get the hang of the keyboard after a bit but wile I'm learning it it would be
nice too if I can also open let's say email via the phone and use the
keyboard just to type in text in an email message.

My reason for buying it was so that I can do email wile traveling.

Thanks for this great little keyboard recommendation. I really didn't want
to shell out allot of money for a keyboard that will only get limited use.
This should fill my needs rather nicely.

Hi, more on this app. I played with it a little more and saw that in
order for it to read, it uses cloud-based TTS reading. So this means
that which ever document you have loaded in the app, it uses data to
send the document to the net and then the TTS voice reads it to you.
So, this is a bit like streaming. I don't know how much data it uses
up with this method, but I don't see it as being a viable source of
reading text files. I also think it only supports txt files, but I
could be wrong on this point. I would still choose to use Voice Dream
Reader since it offers much more features and it doesn't use a
cloud-based TTS to get you that higher quality voice.

what's near me in a category such as hotels, restaurants, Etc. I'm
looking for an impartial app, like around me used to be. Please note:
around me is no longer this good! I'll base it on the old around me,
hopefully you guys know of a similar app. A year ago, if I wanted to
know what hotels were close to me, I used to use the around me app. It
was completely impartial to hotels.com, travelocity, Kyak, Etc. It
just gave me what was close, nothing else! i got the hotels around me,
based solely on distance, and nothing else! The new around me no loger
does this and deliberately skips hotels i know darn well are close,
because its partnered with hotels.com now. How about restaurants? I
know of a good restaurant called Clean street marina.' (not the
actual name, since i don't wanna give away right where i live!) Its a
good fish/seafood place, some of the fish came right from my local
lake! What if I'm in dallas and want to find a locally owned truly
texas barbecue place (not a chain?) What about a small locally owned
motel/hotel that's distinctly dallas? Is there new apps that are good
at that stuff? Please reply. If you guys just can't follow my point
I'll put it a different way...the sighted person who looks at the
signs of businesses around him/her, seeing what the area is like.
That's exactly what i'm looking for. Please help!

Check if the reader has two 'rings' in the connector instead of one.
Normal headphone plugs use tip for left channel and ring for right
channel. Rest of the connector is ground. Special connectors use
second ring for control signals or microphone signal.

Standard splitters will hanle only tip. one ring and the sleeve.

Youn can feel the insulation between tip, ring(s) and sleeve with your

Hello,

I received the square card reader and used it twice with success. Before
using it with clients, I did the following and it worked.

1. Open the app and enter the amount of the transaction in the appropriate
field.
2. Enter a description if I want to do so in the description field.
3. Plug the card reader into the headphone jack.
4. Swipe the card.
5. Unplug the card reader.

I discovered that if the card swipe was not successful that I would still be
in the amount and description screen after unplugging the reader, but if
swiping was successful then after unplugging the reader I would
automatically land in the signature screen. I then turn VO off for signing
the screen, and then turn VO back on to activate the continue button.
Everything from that point is a breeze.

BTW, I found that if I am using my Plantronics bluetooth headphones and I
plug the reader into the headphone jack, I lose VO until I unplug the
reader. I also noticed that the tip of the plug on the reader is a bit
different from the stereo tip on earbuds or headphones. If I plug the
reader and earbuds into a splitter, will the reader actually still work
properly?

Thanks,

DJ

The cellular data is to fetch the map information, not get the gps signal,
that latter isi ndeed free!

Nothing short of a gps app with built in, or downloaded and hhosted on the
device, will overcome this. Navigon is the one you buy and hold maps for
without having to constantly go fetch the next bit. I hope someone will
correct any inconsistencies in this, but this is the general form.

Although this probably borders on heresy for this list, I use my iPhone
3-GS exclusively as a wifi device, no phone service other than Skype. I
do so because I am not anxious to incur exorbitant charges for data. One
thing which I presently do not have is GPS access.

Something I read from a couple of messages this afternoon suggested that
if I used an external GPS receiver with my 3-GS, I would not incur data
charges. I may well have misunderstood. So now for the questions. If I
purchase an external GPS receiver, will this somehow obviate the need
for cellular data? The only external GPS receiver I have heard of is
something called Bad Elf. Are there better choices? Lastly, if I bite
the bullet and purchase a data plan, is there any sort of GPS receiver
in my 3-GS?

Thanks for any feedback.

The only issue that i have with it is that if you are using it while in a
vehicle, it can't seem to keep up with you if you are going more than about
30 mph. On a city bus or walking, it probably would be fine. For all it
does, it's well worth the money.

The only objection i've got against blindsquare is that it takes too long to
report on what street i actually am compared to the Trekker Breeze. It may be
that the comparison is unfair, but i have the feeling that i could go down a
street for several blocks and then all of a sudden Blindsquare will tell me
where i am, and by that time, if i'm lost, i may already have figured out that
i'm lost and so have maybe turned around, with Trekker, i feel the response is
more instantaneous assuming the damn thing gets a satelite fix, which could
take a couple forevers.

that you can use it in tandem with Navigon or Apple Maps for turn by

hearing Blindsquare's speech to announce your proximity to the POI

Hi there listers,
I tried out the iMove app this morning on my walk to the supermarket. It's
not a bad app.
It reminds me of a lite version of blind square.
It seems to update your location, every so many yards, to an value that you
can set in the settings area.
It tells you the address, direction you are moving, direction your phone is
facing, and your speed.
As your walking down the street it will tell you when you are close to a
business if notification is turned on. This worked out very well.
Although it didn't announce cross streets, if you have it update often, it
will change the value to the cross street as you're walking across it.

Here's what I would suggest to improve the app:
1. Have a button to turn the monitoring on and off.
2. . When in look around mode, offer directional cues ( like clock face) to
the POI's along with the direction.
3. Have it update the distances to the POI's as you move around.

It's a very good app for the price.
Thanks to the developer to come up with such a nice product for free.

I didn't try the voice recording feature yet, so I can't comment on it.

Hi

If you have the destination in the favourites open favoirite manager,
select the desired favourite and open it, select options and selet the
track button. Select the home tab and look for tracked location and leave
focus on it. Now the phone will announce periodically your distance and
direction to the tracked favourite.

With blindsquare you can mark location as tracked too.

Both will also alert when you're at the destination but this alert is too
late if you have to leave out at a bus stop.

Truthfully I suggest just getting outside and walking around your
neighborhood with the app running. It will do the work for you.

It will start telling you whats nearby.

After a while you can cutsomize it by letting it know things your not
interested in hearing about just buy turning the category on or off, simple
toggles.

The other setting you need to play with after a bit is the distance setting.
This says ow many feet you want to look ahead. Shortening the distance it
looks ahead can help sometimes when you just want to know what is close to
you.

Another setting is the way it tells you information about direction.

You can decide if you want the area described as a clock face, or compass
directions or where things are in degrees.

Don't worry abou tthis just run it and after a bit you will decide how you
want things set.

Don

Just to balance it all up a bit i will now come with my not so positive opinion
of this app. I actually tried it here in a very small town in Sweden. I must
say that i'm rather dissapointed actually. If i compare it to trekker,
something you maybe shouldn't do, i'll have to say that the Trekker is much
speedier when delivering info about where you are after having turned into a
street. It took a long time, a minute or more for Blindsquare to tell me what
street i was on. Maybe it's the openmap thingy, something i don't like at all,
or maybe it's user error or something but that's what i have experienced.
Furthermore at times Blindsquare gets very, very verbose and starts speaking of
shops and fasilities that aren't even close to where i am, sometimes even
behind me, i don't understand the need for that. I can in theory see and
appreciate its goods, but we're just not there yet, if we ever get there. Now
having said all this, it could be user error, that is me not knowing every
aspect of how this program is operated, in which case i would be willing to
learn.

program like navigon but really the best! pair of eyes bar none a blind
person can have.

After all that is what we really miss most of the time what stores are
we passing, what street are we approaching etc.

I live in New York city, in the heart of midtown manhattan and let me
tell you I have found out about more things in my neighborhood that I
never knew were there with Blindsquare then all the gps apps, restaurant
apps restaurant menu apps etc. put together.

Its truly amazing!

I only wish I had made the time to nominate it for the appleviz awards
for 2012 because unfortunately this app I feel has been very much
overlooked. I tended to overlook it as well when it first came out and
I truly regret that.

While I am no fan of 4square, the concept of using things like 4square
to provide info is a great! one.

Companies like Sendero, navigon mosionX pay big fees to companies like
navtech for POI data and so many times that data is quite inaccurate
very outdated and to say the least incomplete.

The approach BlindSquare takes to POI info makes so much sense because
the information is always being updated by people like you and I
visiting these places.

Just my opinion but if you have been on the fence take a look at this
app, give it the attention it deserves and I can't imagine you will
regret it.

Re: creating folders on my iPhone for my apps

2013-01-05 Thread Ari Moisio

Hi

To create a folder move an app into another app. This will create a new
folder witth default name witch you can edit later and both apps inside
the folder.

To move an ap tap it few times and then hold until you hear a rising
pitch. Now you can drag the app with your finger. To initiate the move
is very timing sensitive and hit and miss at best.

Re: Basic wireless blue tooth keyboard and the IPhone-4s.

2012-12-11 Thread Ari Moisio

Hi

You need only the phone and keyboard. It's a bit tricky because you have
to enter the PIN code that phone will display and there is not much time
to do that. Prepare by looking for number keys and enter key for that.

You also have to put your keyboad into pairing mode. Usually this is done
by pressing the power key for few seconds.

On the other hand if you visit in the Apple shop pairing the keyboard is
not an issue. I have made it couple of times without sighted assistance
and it was a bit frustrating experience.

Blindsquare can tell both direction and distance to the venues. It can
also tell your current address and and nearby crossings. You can also
store your own locations and find them later.

Re: Battery Charging Question

Don't worry, electronics will take care not to overcharge the battery.

Not sure why phone will report both 100 % capacity and charging at the

Wanted: good gps application

2012-11-15 Thread Ari Moisio

Hi

I'm lookin for good gps application. I have tested so far Navigon,
Tomtom, Blindsquare, Aroundme, Sendero lookaround, IOS 6 maps, Ariadne,
MyWay Classic and few aplications made only for finnish market.

I have found Blindsquare best so far.

Especially i would be interested about accessible application that will
use OpenStreetMap data or application that will allow user to import POI
data in some format.

Another nice feature would be justo to point phone to certain direction
and it will tell details on that direction: crossings, addresses or POIs
according user preferences.

Any tips welcome.
