RE: Face I.D

2020-11-13 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Simon,
Okay, no problem. I have done that a couple of times. I have an appointment at
an Apple Store fairly close to where I live on Wednesday, When I explained the
issue I was having, the rep with whom I spoke suggested that my problem could
be with the front facing camera and that it might need to be replaced. So, I
will test with a technician and we will go from there. Have a good weekend.
Best,

Les

Sorry Les,

I meant that you can delete your current face id settings and re do face ID
without having to wipe the phone and start setup from the beginning

Easier than going through the entire setup again.

Hi Carolyn,
Thanks. Well, I thought I had this all figured out, but I'm still getting
inconsistent performance with face I.D. I think my only option is to completely
erase the phone And start over, or swap out my phone. If I erase the phone and
re-set it up and that does not resolve the issue, I'll have to do this a second
time. I've spent considerable time on this issue, and I'm leaning toward
replacing the phone. I can be holding my phone in the exact same position and
it will work, then stop working with the message, try again. If anyone has
other suggestions, I'm open to them. With Covid concerns, I may not be able to
swap via curbside, but we'll see about that one.
Best,

I appreciate your response, as well as the many recommendations from others on
this list. I think I finally figured it out! I was holding the phone the same

When I get a new iPhone, I'm not going to use face ID at all, just a passcode.
I was talking to someone recently at apple accessibility and they told me, that
I have a choice whether to use face ID at all.
This was something I didn't know about. I have the choice of using face ID,
using a passcode, or turning off all security together where my iPhone wouldn't
lock at all. I would never turn off security all together, so when I get a new
iPhone, I'm not going to enable face ID, but just use a passcode to unlock my
iPhone.

Hi Simon,
Yes, the attention setting is off. There is another setting for attention

Hi Les

Yeah the attention setting should be off by default if you have voiceover
running.

And from what you're saying I'm guessing it's off as you would have more of an
issue with it than you have with your success

Mine works about 90% of the time. I hold my phone like I'm on a Facetime or
other video call. I do have issues with turning my head the right way when
approving app downloads or purchases. I usually will rotate my face around
until I hear the ding to approve the purchase/download. Perhaps an SE phone
would work better for you. It sounds like you're still in the first 30 day
period.

RE: Face I.D

2020-11-12 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Carolyn,
Best,

Les

Good going, Les. I think I was doing more like you said until someone on one of
the lists said they held their phone about 12-14 inches out from their face.

Hi Wayne,
I appreciate your response, as well as the many recommendations from others on
this list. I think I finally figured it out! I was holding the phone the same
way as I do when navigating the screen. My wife encouraged me to hold the phone
vertically. I can best describe it as the phone being absolutely straight in my
hand. Holding it in this manner and away from my face now results in Face I.D
working every time. Now, I've had false positives before, but I really think
I've cracked it! Again, I really appreciate everybody's suggestions. Simon, you
mentioned an attention setting which I will look at. As of now, the difference

All things being equal, I prefer touch ID over face ID, but I don't find face
ID to be as bad as some make it out to be, especially since if the face ID
doesn't work, you can still just enter your PIN.

Touch Id is not so convenient and if like me you enjoy woodowrking Touch Id
also is not always so great because I may have a bunch of cuts on my fingers or

And why would you want to do that? Sorry, just curious? For me Face Id work I
would say 99% of the time and I think it's a huge pain in the finger so to
speak if I had to type in my 6-digit passcode each time I want to unlock my
phone. Even if you go with a 4-digit passcode it's still inconvenient, after
all, you use Touch Id so why wouldn't you want to use Face Id.

I would never turn off security all together, so when I get a new
iPhone, I'm not going to enable face ID, but just use a passcode to unlock my
iPhone.

Lenron,
I am just curious; did you use Face ID for more than just a few hours
or a few times? I think more people would like and get used to Face ID
if they spent a good week with the feature, but that's my own biased
opinion. If you entered your face on a friend's phone and tried it a
few times with said friend, and decided you did not like it as much;
that doesn't seem like a long enough time to make an objective
judgment. Again, just my humble biased opinion. As someone else said,
I'll take off my teacher hat now, :)

Tested it a while ago when I had access to an xs max hated it. I like
being able to have my phone where ever and unlock it. Touch id works
all the time so if it aint broken don't need to fix it. If apple gives
me a phone with both I will consider upgrading my 7plus in a couple
years, but for now it's 7plus and s20 fe.

But even more,
If they haven't used it, how can they really comment be it positive or negative
on how it is.

I don't think I'll go back to a touch id device now I've had the face id
phones.

Even if apple bring both out in one device as they are rumoured to be doing,
I'll still use face id first.

Interesting,

I've had a number of situations where the sun was some how to bright and
couldn't pick up on my face therefore not unlocking the phone.
Going into the shade it worked fine.

That sounds like a good point, Anna. For some reason, the guy at Wal-Mart could
not get mine set up.

I went outside in bright sun at about 3 P.M. on a January afternoon and got
mine without one bit of trouble.

Hi,

On the iPhone X, I found that if I had a lot of light available when setting up
the scan, Face ID worked better, presumably because it got a better scan. You
don't have to have any light at all when scanning for Face ID, but it may help
when doing the initial scans.

The one thing I’d say to check is that the attention setting is turned
off in the face id settings,

This wants you to look at the camera to unlock the screen,

If you turn this off, it takes that requirement away and you can have
more luck.

Note though that this should be disabled / off if you have voiceover on
from the start of setup.

The other thing I’ve found glair from the sun can affect the face id
also,
As well as not pointing it directly towards your face.

Hope this helps.

Hi All,
Okay, I have had my new iPhone for about 3 and a half weeks. More often
than not, I cannot get Face I.D to work. Sometimes it works when I do not
expect it to do so, other times, it’s just the opposite. I cannot consistently
create situations where I can identify what my issue is with this feature. I
have had a few discussions with Apple Accessibility. I have removed and reset
up Face ID, I even removed my app settings before setting up Face I.D. The
problem persists. So my questions are these. For those of you using Face I.D,
on a percentage basis, how often would you say that Face I.D works for you.
Second question, if it works the majority of the time, what method did you use
to bring this about? Thanks for the assist on this one.

I would say to those who are going to experience this for the first time, just
like I am when I get my phone on Friday, that you should at least experience
the feature. You should be able to turn it off later if you truly don't want
it. That's my teacher mode there, as this is what I would say to a student of
mine with any new feature or process on computer or iphone.

Touch Id is not so convenient and if like me you enjoy woodowrking Touch Id
also is not always so great because I may have a bunch of cuts on my fingers or

As of now, the difference
is night and day!
Best Regards,

Les

I'm curious. Why won't you use face ID? If you're face isn't recognized, you
can always enter your PIN. These two options are not mutually exclusive.

RE: Face I.D

2020-11-11 Thread Carolyn
That sounds like a good point, Anna. For some reason, the guy at Wal-Mart could
not get mine set up.

I went outside in bright sun at about 3 P.M. on a January afternoon and got
mine without one bit of trouble.

Hi,

On the iPhone X, I found that if I had a lot of light available when setting up
the scan, Face ID worked better, presumably because it got a better scan. You
don't have to have any light at all when scanning for Face ID, but it may help
when doing the initial scans.

Best,
Anna

The one thing I’d say to check is that the attention setting is turned
off in the face id settings,

This wants you to look at the camera to unlock the screen,

If you turn this off, it takes that requirement away and you can have
more luck.

Note though that this should be disabled / off if you have voiceover on
from the start of setup.

The other thing I’ve found glair from the sun can affect the face id
also,
As well as not pointing it directly towards your face.

Hope this helps.

Second question, if it works the majority of the time, what method did you use

Hi Les

Yeah the attention setting should be off by default if you have voiceover
running.

And from what you're saying I'm guessing it's off as you would have more of an
issue with it than you have with your success

I don't use face id and honestly life is good with out it. My 7plus
nor my other phone has it. Fingerprint readers work just fine. I am
happy it works for some but there isn't really much likeable about it.

No reason why one form of security wont work,

Just remember though that more people have success with face id than don't on
phones that require face id.

I would never turn off security all together, so when I get a new
iPhone, I'm not going to enable face ID, but just use a passcode to unlock my
iPhone.

Hello:
As far as using face ID, I find that holding the phone in front of me with the
display facing my face as if I am reading a book seems to be the best way to
get Face ID to work. It’s different when you’re laying down if you’re laying
down then you have to put The phone above your forehead, and aimed towards the
chin. Hope this helps!

I'm curious. Why won't you use face ID? If you're face isn't recognized, you
can always enter your PIN. These two options are not mutually exclusive.

2020-11-11 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi,

On the iPhone X, I found that if I had a lot of light available when setting up
the scan, Face ID worked better, presumably because it got a better scan. You
don't have to have any light at all when scanning for Face ID, but it may help
when doing the initial scans.

Best,
Anna

RE: Face I.D

2020-11-11 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Les,

It works for me on my 11 pro max 99% of the time
The one thing I’d say to check is that the attention setting is turned off in
the face id settings,

This wants you to look at the camera to unlock the screen,

If you turn this off, it takes that requirement away and you can have more luck.

Note though that this should be disabled / off if you have voiceover on from
the start of setup.

The other thing I’ve found glair from the sun can affect the face id also,
As well as not pointing it directly towards your face.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Face I.D

Hi All,
Okay, I have had my new iPhone for about 3 and a half weeks. More often than
not, I cannot get Face I.D to work. Sometimes it works when I do not expect it
to do so, other times, it’s just the opposite. I cannot consistently create
situations where I can identify what my issue is with this feature. I have had
a few discussions with Apple Accessibility. I have removed and reset up Face
ID, I even removed my app settings before setting up Face I.D. The problem
persists. So my questions are these. For those of you using Face I.D, on a
percentage basis, how often would you say that Face I.D works for you. Second
question, if it works the majority of the time, what method did you use to
bring this about? Thanks for the assist on this one.
Best Regards,

Les

Re: Face I.D

2020-11-11 Thread Wayne Merritt
Mine works about 90% of the time. I hold my phone like I'm on a
Facetime or other video call. I do have issues with turning my head
the right way when approving app downloads or purchases. I usually
will rotate my face around until I hear the ding to approve the
purchase/download. Perhaps an SE phone would work better for you. It
sounds like you're still in the first 30 day period.

Best,
Wayne Merritt

Re: Face I.D

2020-11-11 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
When I get a new iPhone, I'm not going to use face ID at all, just a
passcode. I was talking to someone recently at apple accessibility
and they told me, that I have a choice whether to use face ID at all.
This was something I didn't know about. I have the choice of using
face ID, using a passcode, or turning off all security together where
my iPhone wouldn't lock at all. I would never turn off security all
together, so when I get a new iPhone, I'm not going to enable face ID,
but just use a passcode to unlock my iPhone.
