Re: Moderator Note -was- Re: unable to purchase knfb reader due to lack of money somebody gift me please!
I was just thinking that even when a moderator asks a topic to stop, there are going to be a few messages from people who didn't read it by the time they had already responded. That's normal and to be expected. However when some of you continue writing on a closed thread even though you obviously know you shouldnt shows an utter lack of respect. At this point I'm ready to start revoking posting by some list members. Thanks much On Dec 26, 2014, at 3:40 PM, Charles Rivard wee1s...@fidnet.com wrote: Who is Karen? --- Be positive! Hello everyone, I am not a moderator and I apologize if I am stepping over a line, but I don't think I am, and I need to share this. We have had some fairly harsh things to say about ram's request. I totally agree that it is not OK to ask for a gift like the KNFB Reader from this list. However, let's step outside of our own United States shoes and into someone else's for a moment. From the name and the English usage, I am guessing that Ram may not be a native English speaker and may be from another country and another culture where asking for gifts from strangers may not have the bad connotations that it does in the States. Also, in the States, we have a 60-75% unemployment rate among blind people, depending on how you figure the stats. We know that we have many blind people who have not had the opportunities to learn independence, self-sufficiency, and the skill set that makes them empowered in this world. Given all that, I would like to explain to Ram that I understand his/her need for the KNFB Reader, but that we can't give it to him/her and that it is not a good idea to ask. I would also like to explain that I feel very sad that Ram and many of us, blind and sighted, don't have what we need in this world. I send compassion and hope that Ram can find resources to get what is needed. I also hope that we as a list change our tone of responses. I hope the above is not out of line. I figured that you had not moderated the list because, just like us, you are humans. You were probably celebrating the Holidays just like we were. You were spending quality time with friends and families. I don't blame either of you for not stopping the thread in a timely manner. I respect the work you do for the list and the time it takes you to do it. Keep up the good work, both you and Raul, and have a happy new year, too. --- Be positive! So far I've seen nothing but bashers and flamers flaming this person, and while whether his request was appropriate on this list or not, I am sad to say that the bashers and flamers will not be dealt with at all, and that is very sad indeed. This is Christmas, for those who celebrate it, yet people are giving this person all kinds of grief for posting something that may or may not have been appropriate. Darned screen readers, anyway. I've known some people from the United Kingdom who were referring to a game by the name mark one instead of mach one because of the screen reader's voice not pronouncing the r, like saying pot instead of part. I don’t come on this list to listen to someone ask for money and gifts. IMO it’s not appropriate. RE: unable to purchase knfb reader due to lack of money somebody gift me please!
I deeply appreciate this list and the info and help that you share. I have learned so much and have felt such a part of a supportive community. Ditto, Terrie! I mean, what is this day all about but to show compassion and kindness to our fellow human beings, not to get smart alecky and snide to some one that in truth may come from a place where he doesn't have all the resources we all do. Re: unable to purchase knfb reader due to lack of money somebody gift me please!
THANKS Terry for your post. I was taken back when I read the posts, especialally on a holiday such as Christmas. All of the religious holidays being celebrated during this time of year always express joy, harmony, and peace, whichever holiday one observes. I'm wondering where the old saying of Do on to others that you want others to do to you has gone. Thanks for listening and have a wonderful holiday season to all. From the name and the English usage, I am guessing that Ram may not be a native English speaker and may be from another country and another culture where asking for gifts from strangers may not have the bad connotations that it does in the States. Hi Terrie, Beautifully said and if you hadn't done so I was going to do so myself, now I will just support you and add a few thoughts. I agree that asking for this is not OK, but being married to a Filipina and having travelled to several east Asian third-world countries I have seen what not having anything means. Some of the blind folk on here who don't have work and are on a very tight budget may think they are not so well off, but I can assure them that their situation is nothing compared to that of half the population of the planet. I know it doesn't mean anything to make these comparisons, but given the several very ungraceful replies I thought maybe a reminder of how good we have it living in free countries like the US, Canada, England and so on. Given it's Christmas today I really wonder about the sarcasm in many of these messages and it was probably expressed by people (at least some of them) who may consider themselves Christians. Hello, all. I have been reading the responses and trying to formulate my own. I think that not only do we need to step out of our North American mind set but also please remember that upon first glance, that request might look suspicious. It is of utmost importance to think before we answer harshly. I think it is essential for people to step back and think how well we have it and I’ve known this for years. I used to belong to a pen pal magazine when I was a teenager and I got requests from developing countries asking for watches, paper, all manner of things which I used to detest because, in my ignorance, I did not have a clue about these nations nor their access to things we take for granted. I received a valuable lesson not to criticize others for asking for things as long as we know it’s done with upright intentions, not a scam. We can't control who joins the list, and we can't control what posts make it to the list. Obviously, there needs to be some guidelines on what is and isn't appropriate to post to the list, but we also need to respond responsibly to the posts we do see on the list. We need to have a bit of a thick skin sometimes, realize not everyone speaks our language or lives in our culture and just use the delete key from time to time. I don't follow this list to see people ask for something, but I'd rather see that one message, hit my delete key than see all of the unnecessary responses to that one post. I'd suggest using the delete key and let the moderator deal with the original post. Well said Terrie. My understanding is that this is a support group, yes for all things related to i'devices but a support group. Sarcasm amounts to bullying and in my opinion doesn't belong here. asking for money and gifts on a technical public support list is bad netiquette, and will get you banned on most lists I am on. Re: unable to purchase knfb reader due to lack of money somebody gift me please!
but imo there are places for that. I wouldn’t go on a list about cats, and gush about my dog, nor do I think a tech list is the place for asking for things. It could get to the point where the list is used for it, and who knows who might get ripped off then complain here, and where does it end? If you guys want a list for that drama you can start one. Of course the mods will make this decision, then I will think long and hard about whether it is somewhere I want to stay. I give gifts, and money to those I trust, and know, and charities I believe in, and no offense but I don’t know anyone here well enough yet to do that, and if I did I would want it done privately. I’m sorry if that sounds harsh, but I don’t want this list to turn into the “ask for iphone list. Alia On Dec 25, 2014, at 2:03 PM, Kerri G kerri.g1...@icloud.com wrote: Hello, all. I used to belong to a pen pal magazine when I was a teenager and I got requests from developing countries asking for watches, paper, all manner of things which I used to detest because, in my ignorance, I did not have a clue about these nations nor their access to things we take for granted. Re: unable to purchase knfb reader due to lack of money somebody gift me please!
Hi Andy I suggest you read the posts of those who felt the initial responses to Ram Kalia's post was harsh as not one stated that his post was appropriate for this list as you have suggested. I think Terrie's post in respect of this was very clear and succinct and well worth revisiting. They are in no way similar. When I read the request, I noticed that it was very poorly written, and it was an absolute turn off to me. This has nothing at all to do with Christianity, either. There are just some things that you do not do on a list like this, and this request is probably at the very top of that list, or near it. Hi again, To those who have written about the inappropriateness of Ram's request, I think that we all agree that the request is inappropriate and that we should not give money to someone that we don't know who asks by email. I think that this matter would be best dealt with by a moderator. None of us lowly list members have the power to say, unequivocally whether this person's post was appropriate or not, so I think this thread should end until the moderators get back and handle it. Either way, I believe it's a shame to have to come to my e-mail, and see nothing but hatred being spewed on a list that is there for the sole purpose of helping others out. Merry Christmas, or what ever other holiday you happen to celebrate at this time of year, I'm sure you're making your religion very proud. I should have also mentioned that it states in the rules that if you don't like a post from another member, there should be no flaming or bashing on list, simply contact the moderators and they will handle it, so, technically speaking, all the bashers, and, I'm sorry to say, all the messages of support to this person, however well meaning, have been breaking the rules, so, even if you don't like my last post, I think you better think twice about sending a nasty reply to this one. When I first heard about this app, I had to save for two months to be able to afford it. Everyone is in different circumstances, some better than others, and it was tough seeing others who were just able to plop down $100 like that, but I had to be patient. I think it’s beneath our dignity as blind people to beg for anything, no matter the culture. An app is not a need; it’s a want. It’s a luxury. It’s a great thing to have that makes life easier, but we went for a long time without it. It’s better to be financially responsible and save what you need until you have enough. Just my $0.02. I deeply appreciate this list and the info and help that you share. I have learned so much and have felt such a part of a supportive community. Joke or no joke, where are the monitors of this group? For a member of this list serve to post a prank should be band from the list. There have been many posts on this thread that are beginning to clutter up my inbox. This thread needs to be closed. I know I'm not a monitor or the list owner, but enough is enough with this. If the monitors want to place me on monitor status for voicing my opinion, then go right ahead. The members of this list shouldn't have to put up with this kind of warped sense of humor. JMO.
