I would be interested in knowing if the Square blue tooth card reader works
as well, since I am looking for an accessible card reader for two totally
blind folks.

I just got my new Square blue tooth card reader which will accept the chip
cards but I haven't had a chance to try it as I generally don't get actual
cards to swipe but this one will likely work. If anyone out there has used
the new blue tooth version please let me know.

Yes, and it would not work at all once the reader is plugged in. I

RE: Square card reader

2014-07-08 Thread DJ
While I've been able to use the reader withbluetooth headphones once or
twice in the past, I haven't been successful for some time now. I do the
same thing as suggested below. I plug the unit in, swipe, and then unplug
the unit to check the results. This works fine for me at this time
allthough I really hope that Square finds a way to make it work with
bluetooth at least.

Did you experiment with a splitter to find out if you could use a headset

Ok after reading the message below, I decided to give it another try and
believe it or not it works now. I previously tried it in IOS6 but now in
IOS7 it truly works. Let's see how it works next time I use the app with a
client.

Thanks for the reminder Sieghard!

If you plug in the Square Card Reader and then turn on your Bluetooth
headset sound should come through the headset. This works with any wired
headset so it should also work with anything else you plug into the headset.

For example, if you listen with a Bluetooth headset or Bluetooth speaker and
plug in a wired headset, then the sound switches to the wired headset.
However, if you turn off your Bluetooth headset or speaker while the wired
headset is plugged in and then turn it on again, sound switches back to the
Bluetooth device.

Wouldn't the sound square needs the reader to pick up end up also coming
through the bluetooth into your ear instead of into the reader, or can it
specifically address the jack while leaving speech on bluetooth?

If you plug in the Square Card Reader and then turn on your Bluetooth headset
sound should come through the headset. This works with any wired headset so it
should also work with anything else you plug into the headset.

For example, if you listen with a Bluetooth headset or Bluetooth speaker and
plug in a wired headset, then the sound switches to the wired headset. However,
if you turn off your Bluetooth headset or speaker while the wired headset is
plugged in and then turn it on again, sound switches back to the Bluetooth
device.

RE: Question on Square Card Reader

2013-06-10 Thread DJ
Karen,

My experience is that using bluetooth headphones with the reader plugged in
does not work. Maybe someone else has had better luck with that, but when I
am using bluetooth headphones and plug the reader in, I do not get audio
until I unplug the reader.

I did not have success with a splitter either, but my particular splitter
might have been the problem.

You can run the Square app on both devices loged into the same Square
account. You will find that the app is a bit different between the iPad and
the iPhone.

I just received a Square credit card reader, and would be interested in
communicating with someone who has experience with it.

1. Is it possible to use a splitter, pluged into the earphone jack, to be
able to plug in both the reader and an earphone? If so, is there anything I

should specificly ask for when purchasing the splitter? I would rather not
use a wireless headset unless it's absolutely necessary.

2. If I install the app on both my iPhone and iPad, can I switch back and
forth between the two, or am I limited to using it on one device?

Thanks,

RE: Square Card Reader, Does it work with VoiceOver?

2013-06-10 Thread DJ
Penny,

When I use the reader, I manually enter the amount of the transaction before
plugging the reader into the headphone jack. After plugging the reader in,
I swipe the card, sometimes 2 or 3 times to be sure I get a successful read.
I then unplug the reader. If the card was read, I will find myself in the
screen where the person paying is supposed to sign. If I am still in the
amount screen I Plug the reader in and try another swipe. The only time the
reader has to be connected to the device is when you are actually ready to
swipe the card. Also, you may want to wait about 5 seconds or so after
swiping the card before disconnecting the reader just in case it takes a few
seconds to complete all transfer of information between the reader and the
device.

I hope I explained this clearly enough.

RE: Question on Square Card Reader

2013-05-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Karen,

Hopefully you will get some helpful replies, but in the meantime I thought I
mention that the Square Card Reader has been discussed before and you might
find some helpful hints if you do a search in the archives for "Square Card"
or "Squarecard" (not sure if officially it is spelled in one or 2 words, but
people might have done both). It's a pretty unique name so a search should
be quite easy to do.

There are a few discussions about Square on Applevis, but a quick look seems
to indicate that they are mostly forum questions which have some often
answers where others offer guesses as to how this might work. I think that a
Bluetooth headset might be your best option although it also is an educated
guess since I don't have or use the Square card reader.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: Square Card reader

2013-02-06 Thread Nicholas Abrahamson
It's true the square reader plugs into the headphone jack. i'd think for fast
connectivity hardline would be easiest, because he or she could leave the
splitter attached to square, and then just plug in really quickly if they
wanted. Bluetooth works just as well from what I've read. Any decent
headphone splitter would work, Dynex, monster, that kind of thing.

The up side though is that there's no taking over of the audio jack. A good

I think I have seen a simular case in the apple stores, but they were using

You can buy a dual headphone jack from Radio Shack and plug your
headphones in one and the reader in the other. I've taken several payments
this way.

All, I haven't used the square reader however I have used Go
Payment which is from intuit. Who are the same people who make
turbo tax. Yes, it plugs in to the headphone jack which disables
voiceover. However, I plug up my bluetooth headset... & go from
there. The App which comes with it is also totally accessible with
VoiceOver as well. I've considered Square, however, I do not like
some of their fees & other practices. I'm not saying they're a bad
company.

You should plug in the card reader first, making that bluetooth is turned on
in settings first, then turn on your bluetooth headset. If you turn on the
headset first, then plugin the reader, iOS will reroute the audio threw the
headphone jack.

All, I haven't used the square reader however I have used Go Payment
which is from intuit. Who are the same people who make turbo tax.
Yes, it plugs in to the headphone jack which disables voiceover.
However, I plug up my bluetooth headset... & go from there. The App
which comes with it is also totally accessible with VoiceOver as
well. I've considered Square, however, I do not like some of their
fees & other practices. I'm not saying they're a bad company.

2012-08-15 Thread Damashe Thomas

Hi,
Can the Mophie Market case be used with any payment app, or is it specific
to the go payment app?
I think I have seen a simular case in the apple stores, but they were using
iPod touches to process payments.

Thanks

The free Go Payment reader doesn't work for crap. That being said, the Go
payment app is very accessible, and the Mophie reader which is not free,
works incredibly well with headphones, no splitter needed.
It's called the Mophie Marketplace.
It looks like the Mophie juice pack case just doesn't offer you any
battery.

:-)
They make them for the iPhone 3, 3GS, as wel as 4 and 4S.

I tried a splitter from Radio Shack and it didn't work. A friend of mine
says he has one that works but I've not seen it. I thought it would be
simple to just listen through my blue tooth ear piece but as soon as the
card reader went into the earphone jack the audio was cut off the blue
tooth

as well. Nothing is ever as simple as you think it is going to be.

Re: blind person using s square card reader with iphone or ipad?

2012-08-15 Thread Sean Paul
Also, just for a bit of further clarification. I am using the Go Payment
card reader on an iPhone 3GS. However, when I look @ the supported devices
on the help section of the Go Payment App, it does have listed both the
iPhone 4&4S. My wife has an android phone, I can't remember the model number
& it for some reason or another will not work with her phone. So, if we
except credit card payments, I have to be with her as stated, it will not
work with her phone. Any further questions, please feel free to ask. I'll
attempt to answer them as best as I can.

I have not. It would be worth a try. One of the things I'll say about that
is this. The card readers tell you that you have to turn your volume coming
out of your earphone jack all the way up so it might be a little loud in
your ears. &, I wonder if there would be any reduction in the volume which
perhaps would cause the card reader to fail. I do have a headphone splitter
here in the desk & the next time we use the card reader, if I think about
it. I'll give it a go & see what happens.

which comes with it is also totally accessible with VoiceOver as
well. I've considered Square, however, I do not like some of their
fees & other practices. I'm not saying they're a bad company.

Re: blind person using s square card reader with iphone or ipad?

2012-08-15 Thread Sean Paul

Hi.
If I may ask, has anyone tried a headphone splitter, whether
purchased or home-made, with either the unit from Go Payment or that from
Square? If so, has it failed to work?
Thanks.

blind person using s square card reader with iphone or ipad?

2012-08-14 Thread Hank Smith
Hello has any blind person successfully used a square reader with the
iphone or ipad?
I know they plug in to the head phone jack so am wondering how blind
folks are getting around this?

Using the Square card reader

2012-05-30 Thread Jenine Stanley
I have a couple questions for anyone using the Square card reader to process
credit cards with your phone.

1. Which way does the card go through the reader?

2. I got my Braille display to pair and read when the card reader is plugged
in but since I'm not putting the card through correctly, I'm not sure what
to click on.

Can someone give me an off list tutorial? Thanks.

I have loaded apps, that when I have my ear phones plugged in,
automatically route the sound to the speaker any way. I wonder if this is
possible with Square Card, and if a suggestion to developer wouldn't be a
good idea for something like this. I know there is no relation, but the
apps with which I've noticed this feature, or possibly bug, are Zello and
Talking Carl.

Re: Square Card Reader

2012-04-28 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi and thanks. I think the problem is that not all splitters are the
same. Not only that, but since the headphone jack of the iPhone is more
than just a headphone jack, perhaps the splitter needs to support extra
features as well. I can look into this and see. Thanks for the tip.

Re: Square Card Reader

2012-04-28 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, ah yes the signature. If the transaction is 25.00 or less, no
signature is required. If it's more, then it is. However if you are
taking a payment over the phone or making a manual transaction where the
person isn't there for whatever reason, then you have to write down
phone order or phone auth. You have to turn off voice over in order to
do this and it works fine. My wife and I play with this a little where
she paid me for some fake services just to see how well the manual
option would work out. The minimum payment you can take is $1.

Thanks.

Thanks much for this info. Many of the credit card readers do use the 30-pin

Hi Jenine,

Unfortunately you will most likely discover that your bluetooth headset will
not work if you plug something into the headphone jack. I didn't want to
give you wrong information, so I just turned on Bluetooth and then I turned
on my Bluetooth headset. It took over as usual and both VoiceOver and
anything else (music, audio books etc.) played on my bluetooth headset. I
then plugged in my Apple wired headset and any audio was immediately routed
to it, it said in the Bluetooth settings that my bluetooth headset was
connected, but there was no output. As soon as I unplugged the wired headset
audio was back on Bluetooth. Unless that card reader has some sort of
headphone jack on it so that you connect it to the headphone jack and then a
headset to it I think you will be out of luck.

I tried out one of those IR dongles last year which in connection with an
app turn your IOS device into a universal remote and here I found a company
which made a dongle that plugs into the 30-Pin connector, others exist which
also use the headphone jack. I am surprised there are no credit card readers
which use the 30-Pin connector.

Good luck,
Sieghard

The problem I gather is that when you plug the device in you loose speech
because it connects to the earphone port. Using Braille however would
probably not pose a problem. I do not have one so cannot test it out.

Re: Square Card Reader

2012-04-28 Thread Sieghard
Hi Jenine,

Unfortunately you will most likely discover that your bluetooth
headset will not work if you plug something into the headphone jack. I
didn't want to give you wrong information, so I just turned on
Bluetooth and then I turned on my Bluetooth headset. It took over as
usual and both VoiceOver and anything else (music, audio books etc.)
played on my bluetooth headset. I then plugged in my Apple wired
headset and any audio was immediately routed to it, it said in the
Bluetooth settings that my bluetooth headset was connected, but there
was no output. As soon as I unplugged the wired headset audio was back
on Bluetooth. Unless that card reader has some sort of headphone jack
on it so that you connect it to the headphone jack and then a headset
to it I think you will be out of luck.

I tried out one of those IR dongles last year which in connection with
an app turn your IOS device into a universal remote and here I found a
company which made a dongle that plugs into the 30-Pin connector,
others exist which also use the headphone jack. I am surprised there
are no credit card readers which use the 30-Pin connector.

Good luck,
Sieghard

RE: Square Card Reader

2012-04-27 Thread Jenine Stanley
I'm assuming if you use a Bluetooth headset then you don't lose speech but
will have to test that one with my crappy Bluetooth headsets.

The problem I gather is that when you plug the device in you loose speech
because it connects to the earphone port. Using Braille however would
probably not pose a problem. I do not have one so cannot test it out.

Square Card Reader

2012-04-27 Thread Jenine Stanley
Anyone out there using the Square Card Reader app and device to take credit
card payments?

The app itself looks fairly accessible. I haven't received my free card
reader yet, but wanted to know how this app plays out in the real world.
