Re: onscreen keyboard problem

2017-02-16 Thread Kimber Gardner
Sandy,

The apple accessibility tech seemed to think it had something to do
with Bluetooth as well. He had me turn off Bluetooth altogether after
unpairing my amazon basics keyboard and my focus display though none
of these actions brought back the keyboard.

I have seen posts from sighted users who say they have the vanishing
keyboard problem but no definite cause or resolution. One of the
suggestions was to restore the phone completely. I absolutely did not
want to do this which was why I called apple accessibility.

In any case, it's a thorny problem and I hope Apple gets it resolved
in a future release.

I have always thought that this was a Bluetooth issue. iOS 10 X has been
plagued with Bluetooth issues. perhaps, it is Bluetooth plus voice-over
related? when it happens to me, I have the impression that the phone is still
thinking it is connected to my Bluetooth keyboard, even though that keyboard is
switched off. often, it might say "quick nav on" which implies to me that it is
thinking the keyboard is connected.

next time it happens to me, I shall try your method with locating the edit box,
turning off voice-over, and then tapping the middle of the screen once. thanks

Re: Onscreen keyboard problem persists

2017-02-16 Thread Kimber Gardner
Sandy,

What you are calling "putting the phone to sleep" is what I meant by
locking the phone. Each time I did that the keyboard would disappear.

I posted another message describing my call to apple accessibility and
the steps the tech took to bring back my onscreen keyboard. In short,
when you have focus on an edit field, turn off VO then do a single
finger single tap in the center of the screen. Turn VO back on and
your onscreen keyboard will be displayed. It's not a solution, but
it's a viable work-around.

I hope this helps.

Re: onscreen keyboard problem

2017-02-16 Thread Kimber Gardner
Please do report your onscreen keyboard problems to Apple
accessibility. I spoke with someone yesterday and he told me they have
other reports from voiceover users who are having trouble with the
onscreen keyboard disappearing. He took me through several steps --
most of which I had already tried to no avail. But the one thing he
had me do and that worked was this. He had me open an app where I was
seeing the disappearing keyboard problem and put focus on the edit
field. He then had me turn off VO with the triple click of the home
button. While VO was off, he had me do a single tap with one finger in
the center of the screen. He said this gesture would cause the
keyboard to appear and it did. I turned VO back on and haven't had any
problem since.

He seemed convinced that the disappearing keyboard was VO related, but
we were unable to reliably reproduce the problem which will make it
difficult to address.

One more thing I noticed, while I was having the problem, there was a
button displaying under settings, general, keyboard that indicated the
presence of a hardware keyboard. When the disappearing keyboard
problem cleared up that button was gone. So there is definitely a VO
related issue, we just don't know how to reproduce it or the
underlying cause.

incredibly frustrating! Also it's a problem I nevwer saw before

RE: Weird onscreen keyboard problem!

2013-07-13 Thread Rose Combs
You could always switch to the numbers by using the more button bottom left
corner, to select the AT sign.

HI Sieghard,

Thanks for that most comprehensive explanation!

What I am trying to do is to enter a user name in the incoming and outgoing
mail server fields. This is where I am now not seeing the @ sign; I just
have the spacebar in that bottom area of the screen as you described. It's
probably just a field where I can't use the @ sign!

I am using an Iphone 4S running IOS 6.1

Thanks!

Debbie

Hi Debbie,

Can you tell me exactly where you are when you are looking for the @ symbol?
The fact is that in designated email fields, for example, when you enter the
To address while you are composing an email, the @ symbol is just to the
right of the space bar and to the right of that is a period, then you have
the Return key.

I suggest you try this out. Open the Mail app and double tap on Compose at
the bottom right.
Your cursor will now be placed into the To field.
Find the Return key at the very bottom right, now move your finger slightly
left or just flick left once.
Voiceover will announce period
Move a bit more left or flick left againand you now hear Voiceover announce
the @ symbol, after that you have the space bar.

OK, now double tap in the message body field.
Now check your onscreen keyboard, once again focus Voiceover on the Return
button.
Move left or flick left and you will find that both the period and @ are
gone and you are immediately on the space bar which now takes up the entire
area.
Now touch and release the More Numbers button.
Find the 0 at the very right of numbers row. Just below at the very right
edge is the symbol, one symbol/space to the left of it is now the @
symbol.
In fact, here is everything you have from left to right in that second row
(I am spelling out most of the symbols to make them read correctly):
Hyphen comma Slash Colon Semicolon Left Paren Right Paren Dollar AnPercent
At quotation mark In the bottom row in between the More Symbols button on
the left and the Delete button on the right are most of the punctuation
symbols:
Period Comma Questionmark Exclamationmark Apostrophy

In certain fields like a field where always the email address is required
which often includes login fields on web pages, the @ symbol and the period
will be on the main letters keyboard to the right of the space bar so it's
easier and faster to find them.
The same goes for fields where a URL is expected, you often have a Slash,
period and even a .com key on the main letters keyboard and of course if
strictly numbers are possible you may end up with a numerica phone keypad
instead of the regular onscreen keyboard where you have to first switch to
More Numbers. I actually wish developers would use this feature more often
because in many apps like for banks or credit cards, it would make much more
sense to have just the numeric keypad show up when it is necessary to enter
one's credit card number, but usually the regular keyboard is displayed.

Good luck,
Sieghard

I'm beginning to wonder if you are correct in that the developer can
determine what type of text field to use as now that I've turned on
punctuation in the rotor and set it to some and and then to all, in both
cases the @ sign appeared when entering an email address. However, in
settings, when trying to enter an email address the @ sign is not there!

Thank you!

Try hit more on the lower left hand corner of the keyboard and it will then
bring up the symbols and numbers and you can find the at sign somewhere
there as well as numbers. Then, in order to get back to the letters you
will have to hit that more button on the lower left corner of the keyboard.

Hi Debbie,

Is it just the @ sign? You might want to turn your rotor to Punctuation and
check what it is set to, if you set it to Some or maybe accidently set it
to None this may effect which symbols are spoken.

What I am trying to do is to enter a user name in the incoming and outgoing

which often includes login fields on web pages, the @ symbol and the period
will be on the main letters keyboard to the right of the space bar so it's
easier and faster to find them.

Good luck,
Sieghard

Hi Mike,

I'm beginning to wonder if you are correct in that the developer can
determine what type of text field to use as now that I've turned on
punctuation in the rotor and set it to some and and then to all, in both
cases the @ sign appeared when entering an email address. However, in
settings, when trying to enter an email address the @ sign is not there!

Thank you!

RE: Weird onscreen keyboard problem!

2013-07-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Debbie,

I am sending this to the list and also directly to you so you don't miss it
and also because it may be of use to somebody else.

I just went into Settings and Mail, Contacts, Calendars and then Add
Account to try and reproduce the issue.

I started to set up a mail account and when I put focus in the Incoming Mail
Server field, I noticed the keyboard was completely different from what you
normally find.

For one thing there is no space bar since I guess Apple wants to avoid
mistakes and there is no need for a space in this field, in fact, it would
probably cause issues if one was accidently inserted.

So, here is what I found (the @ symbol is there, but in a very different
place.

On the letters keyboard, across the bottom where the space bar normally is
(between the Return key on the right and the Next Keyboard on the left
which may not be there for others who don't have additional keyboards added,
you have 3 things:

Period Slash .com

Incoming and outgoing are usually server addresses like, for example,
imap.google.com or smtp.google.com

I am, by the way, not sure why you would need an @ symbol in one of these
fields, I have never seen a case where an email address should be in one of
these.

Anyhow, if you switch to More Numbers, you find the @ symbol on the very
left just under the number row instead of second from the right where it
normally is. It would be under the number 1. Here is the complete layout
without the numbers which are in the top row:

At Anpercent Percent Questionmark Comma Equals Left Bracket Right Bracket

More Numbers Underscore Colon Hyphen Plus Delete

More Letters Next Keyboard Period Slash .com Return

Hope this clears things up.

Sieghard

What I am trying to do is to enter a user name in the incoming and outgoing

you described. It's probably just a field where I can't use the @ sign!

Hi Debbie,

I am taking this off-list, but I like figuring out stuff so I am hoping you
could explain to me exactly where it is you are not finding the @ symbol.

Is it in Settings and Mail, Contacts, Calendars or is it in a particular
app? If it's an app, which one is it?

Tell me the steps you take to get to this field and I'll check it out.

RE: Weird onscreen keyboard problem!

2013-07-11 Thread Thanh Vinh
Hi friend. In my opinion, it is normal because on-screen keyboard is not always
the same in different situations. E.g. in the address field in Safary, the
.com key and . key will appear while in others like chat field on Yahoo or
Skype, those keys are not present and you will have to hit on the more
numbers to display them. Hence, the @ sign will only appear in text fields
where Apple think it's necessary like in email address entering field. So check
if it ever presented in the field that you don't see it now and check if it's
not present at the bottom row, is there any of its sign at the very top row of
the typing field (Above the row QWERT...Etc) like in the App Chrome that I've
seen.

Hope this helps!

Hi Debbie,

Is it just the @ sign? You might want to turn your rotor to Punctuation and
check what it is set to, if you set it to “Some” or maybe accidently set it to
“None” this may effect which symbols are spoken.

Hi, if it's a user name field, the @ sign will be there. if ti's a
server field it may not be there, although I have seen it on occasion.
So it depends. However as others have said, it may be in a different
location. If ti's not in the usual spot of an email address entry field,
then tap the more numbers button under the left shift, and the @ sign
will be toward the right, where the letter K or L usually is.

The same goes for fields where a URL is expected, you often have a Slash,
period and even a .com key on the main letters keyboard and of course if

instead of the regular onscreen keyboard where you have to first switch to
