This is where your voicemail calls are directed to Dial **61*(THE NUMBER YOU WROTE DOWN)**30# and press Call. Your iPhone should now ring longer — that is, for the full 30-second duration of your ringtone. Good afternoon wamuggers In the last few days some weirdness has crept into my system. OS X 10.5 - easy
I thought I would briefly publish my experience installing Leopard on MacBook Pro 2.33MHz 2Gb RAM so that anyone considering the upgrade may get an indication of what happens. Chose archive and install method. Chose to check DVD before installing, it took 20 minutes. Chose to not install some languages and printer drivers, installation took 40 minutes. After installation it took about one hour to check and adjust system preferences. Ran update and installed 10.5.1, after reboot, blue screen lasted 35 minutes. Overall Leopard was easy to install, easier than I remember of earlier versions. Its looks wonderful, lots of cool eye candy, and runs fast I like quick look and time machine is very cool, haven't had a chance to get to spaces yet. I really like Leopard and recommend it if you are thinking about the upgrade. I hope everyone @ WAMUG has a wonderful 2008, and thank you all very much for the great support you provide. I have three Macs (MacBook Pro, G4 PowerBook, and a G4 iBook) running on a wireless network, plus Apple TV, and historically my back up solution has been to manually copy my critical files from one Mac to another periodically, but inevitably never as frequent as I should because it's a pain. I understand that with Time Machine you need an external hard drive plugged into your Mac, but can someone please confirm that Time Machine will work just as well with a hard drive plugged into an Airport Extreme Base Station? And if I install Leopard on all three Macs, would all of them automatically back up to a single hard drive plugged into Airport Extreme via Time Machine? Assuming yes to all of that, is there a clear leader in hard drive options based on capacity and value for money? I see at the Apple web site that in terms of size consideration alone, the largest seems to be a LaCie 2 terabyte for A$1,199. But a 2-3 month waiting time?! www.dstore.com.au seems to have them in stock for $1,062.05 plus $14.95 delivery, http://www.digitalyes.com.au has them for $940.40 plus $15.80 delivery. Is LaCie a good brand I terms of value for money. Maybe 2 terabyte is overkill for my purposes and the 1 terabyte Lacie Big Disk Extreme option is good, which seems to sell as low as $406. I would have thought you get scale economies buying bigger disks, but seemingly not. Any thoughts and tips read with interest. The archive is wonderful, thanks for the time and effort. One thing it highlights is the need for a meaningful subject. Re: airport 802.11n
Hi David Thanks for the info. Does this mean there is no point in getting the enabler for my Intel based MacBook Pro unless I am going to purchase a new airport extreme? It will have no effect on my 'old' extreme base station? Best wishes edward On 30/03/2007, at 8:09 PM, David Moyle wrote: Hey Edward In basic no. The IEEE specification of IEEE 802.11n is the new standard of wireless transfer to eventually replace 802.11g. It has a transfer rate of 108Mbps compared to 802.11g's of only 54Mbps. The new standard is also supposed to get better range and quality. Only the brand new Airport Extremes (In a square box which looks like a miniature Mac Mini) can work at 802.11n or any other new Access Point which operates at 802.11n. Now take note, the update provided by Apple which costs a few dollars I believe only works on the latest Intel Macs minus the budget 17 iMac. (I just checked, it costs $2.99AUD) (Important note: The Enabler is included free with the new AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n. If you purchase a new AirPort Extreme Base Station, you do not need to purchase the Enabler separately.) Another thing to throw into the equation is the specification of 802.11n hasn't been ratified by the IEEE and isn't supported by many companies or access points, despite this Apple has released the new Apple Airports and the latest computers with this feature. I hope that answered your question and didn't confuse you more.. Thanks, David Moyle Hi Can someone explain please how to enable 802.11n on a MacBook Pro? services:summarise
This is the best thing in OS X that I've seen for ages: http://www.macworld.com/2005/05/secrets/juneosxhints/index.php *Clean up text using services:summarise* Have you ever come across a selection of text you’d like to keep—for example, a how-to on a Web page or an article on your local paper’s site? You may have tried copying it and pasting it into TextEdit or Stickies, only to end up with the text and all its distracting formatting, links, and spacing. Here’s a quick and easy workaround. If the program you’re using supports OS X’s Services feature (as is the case for most Apple apps, as well as The Omni Group’s products and Bare Bones’ BBEdit), you can use the Summarize service to clean up the text for easy saving. Start by selecting the text within the source application, and then choose application name: Services: Summarize. Using Font Book by itself to preview many fonts simultaneously is difficult. So press F10 to access Exposé’s Application Windows mode and clearly preview each font in its own window. A new window will open, and you’ll see a cleaned-up version of your text. Next, move the Summary Size slider to the 100% mark; this will force the service to show every word in your original selection. Then press Command-C to copy the text to the Clipboard (it’s already all selected by default), switch to your final destination (a Stickies note, a Word document, or whatever), and press Command-V to paste. If the text isn’t in a Services-aware application, drop it into TextEdit as your first step. If you have TextEdit in Plain Text mode (go to TextEdit: Preferences), doing so will get rid of almost all the formatting. Using the Summarize service will then remove any remaining excess line breaks and other oddities.

Jolimont (more pro friendly that one), even the CBD - that seems pretty reasonable for a computer with a 3% marketshare. I like a up-to-date website as much as the next person, but it's not the be all and end all - While I don't always agree with Digilife's pricing, I appreciate their store presence and stock selection. Cheers, Tobes. P.S. Aplogies Team Digital, haven't seen your digs in East Perth so didn't think it's fair to comment. :}
new Mac time lag
This is not necessarily a complaint but a description of utter frsutration on behalf of someone who orded a G4 iBook over a month ago. A young person named (lets say, Tara) wanted to buy a new computer. She knew how happy we were with our iBook and PowerBook. She had a play with these computers and enjoyed the experience. The decision to purchase a new computer is a huge outlay, and she is also a switcher. Tara finally decided to get a PowerBook 15 Superdrive with lots of RAM. I recommended an Apple retailer in Perth as I had some reasonably satisfactory experience with, 'better than they were under the old management' they once told me. However, my perception and the retailers perception of themselves are not in accord. Five weeks after ordering, no sign of the PowerBook and very weak excuses offered by the retailer after they promised two weeks. The problem is this switcher is about to switch again, back to Windows. Quite a few others that have been watching the process have now lost interest. They all like the look of the Mac and the interface and iTunes and IPhoto and GarageBand. These are young people in their 20s and are very influenced by these things. But they are also influenced by getting something they really want without having to wait over a month for it after ordering it. I feel the retailer should take more responsibility as they are about to lose not just one customer, but also myself as a second (and I won't be recommending them again), and potentially more, as all those watching this episode are quite appalled at the time lag and would definitely not make a purchase there. This crew is also very iPod/Shuffle savvy and this market is also lost to this retailer. If Tara had been offered a loan of a similar second hand computer it may have eased her anxiety and enabled her to become familiar with the OS. The retailer appears to have little interest in Tara as a buyer since she made her order. The 'service' ceased once the deal was done. I don't know anything about the politics of Apple resellers, Apple Australia and Apple, but from the point of view of a customer who may potentially make another purchase in future, or recommend others to purchase similar stuff from a retailer, this its a very poor reflection of all three.
disk utility permissions
Is there a difference between verify disk permissions and repair disk permissions? I notice when running VDP a repair is carried out if needed. Is there a need to run VDP and RDP or is VDP sufficient? In lay terms, what does this stuff mean/do? Thanks Ignorant edward
Re: disk utility permissions
Thanks Shay, Mark and Ronni for your replies. My mind is now at ease. And special Thanks Ronni for the link to http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/durepairfns.html Best wishes edward

Re: Talking point - apps that enhance OS X
The one I can't do without is TypeIt4Me: typeit4me.com By typing the first (or more) letter of a word or URL or sentence or whatever ... this great program expands to write the entire thing.
Re: Tuesday Talking point - apps that enhance OS X
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you ... For a couple of years I have had to record in real time the movies made with my Sony digital still camera to get an audio track. As a result of reading your post I just downloaded bbDEMUX and it separates audio and video instantly. How wonderful!!! I have been giving the following a go: Tinkertool to give me scroll up and down arrows at top and bottom of windows Yasu, MacJanitor and Panther Cache Cleaner to keep it running smoothly (Yasu perhaps best) Carbon Copy Cloner which did a fantastic job last year setting up 6 iBooks and various eMacs at Augusta PS iiUsage which Daniel put me on to, showing my iiNet broadband usage in the menu bar Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection, to show some disbelievers that my mac will do Windows! Photorescue - haven't paid for it so can't really use it but the demo showed me that my daughter could retrieve almost all of her Christmas hol pics that esteemed partner had accidentally deleted from their Kodak digital camera BatChmod which I used last year to set up correct privileges for kids folders in Kidpix,'cos Kidpix wants to store ALL files in the KidPix Folder with admin privileges only so the kids can't actually save their masterpieces! (Found that out after an hour with the yr2/3s and boy were they a little bit annoyed!) bbDemux which let me separate the sound track from video on a short movie taken on a Sony digital still camera, which muxed the movie. THen I could edit it in iMovie a Chronological Calculator which I copied from a website as an html file and runs nicely as a little mini app, usefull when you're doing WALNA data analysis and need to calculate the age of children, or if little Johnny can be enrolled as a kindy kid cos he turns 4 before the end of June (eg if Rod was born on 4/10/1965 then Rod is 39 years, 11 months, and 25 days old today.) Just need to remember it is in US date format mm/dd/year. MorphX which you can use to morph a picture of Rod into a chimpanzee, weevil or similar ;-) or your newborn daughter to your mother-in-law to show her what she's going to look like in the future! Enough for now. Reg

My PowerBook HD is called Maitreya. Other drives are Amitayus, Tara and Avalokiteshvara. :-) On 01/04/2005, at 2:17 PM, Onno Benschop wrote: For a bit of Friday fun, what do WAMUGgers call their hard drives or servers?
