Even if your iPhone ringtone is 30 seconds long, your iPhone rings for only
20 seconds by default. To get your iPhone to ring for 30 seconds, instead of
the standard 20-second ring, follow the steps below:

 Dial *#61# and touch Call.

Jot down the phone number displayed on the screen.
This is where your voicemail calls are directed to

Dial **61*(THE NUMBER YOU WROTE DOWN)**30# and press Call.
Your iPhone should now ring longer — that is, for the full 30-second duration
of your ringtone. To verify that your voicemails are still being sent to the
correct place, repeat step 1 and check that the phone number matches.

The fix - if you have LastPass installed in Safari, download the app again

to remove LastPass. After this Safari opened for me with no problems.

WOW, thanks for the detailed reply Ronni, much appreciated.

Taking your Qs from the top:

1. Did you mean the NEW installed Fonts worked ok in another User Account No.
or had you only installed the NEW fonts in your User Account home folder?Yes.
Installed the NEW fonts in MY USER ACCOUNT not any other user.

2. When you installed the NEW Fonts, did you have “Validate Fonts before
installing selected in Font Book Preferences? Yes.

3. If you installed the NEW Fonts for “All Users”, then I would say the Fonts
are not compatible with Snow Leopard or are ‘duds’ and need to be un-installed
;-) COL did that.

4. If your installed the NEW Fonts only in “Your User Account” there was NO
problem when you booted into another User Account” then there is a problem in
your User Account, which might require a cleaning of Font Caches. COL Did that.

Thanks again Ronni.

WOW! I got it sorted.

For the record: In FontBook I looked more closely at the fonts in the web-safe
Mac/Windows at the bottom of the Collection column on the left side of the
FontBook window. The Arial font was showing up as the blocky font I was seeing
in the browsers. After deleting the font, emptied the trash, did a restart and
all is good again in my MacWorld.

speech and window weirdness

2008-01-08 Thread Edward Arrowsmith

Good afternoon wamuggers

In the last few days some weirdness has crept into my system. The
speech recognition is off but every window that is opened or app or
keystroke such as volume down, brings Vicky's voice saying everything
that appears or announcing every keystroke. At the same time this
started windows have a black box around them and sometimes fields or
buttons as well. I reinstalled Leopard but weirdness persists.

Has anyone experienced something like this or know what to do please?

OS X 10.5 - easy

2007-12-25 Thread Edward Arrowsmith
I thought I would briefly publish my experience installing Leopard on
MacBook Pro 2.33MHz 2Gb RAM so that anyone considering the upgrade may
get an indication of what happens.

Chose archive and install method.
Chose to check DVD before installing, it took 20 minutes.
Chose to not install some languages and printer drivers, installation
took 40 minutes.
After installation it took about one hour to check and adjust system
preferences.
Ran update and installed 10.5.1, after reboot, blue screen lasted 35
minutes.

Overall Leopard was easy to install, easier than I remember of earlier
versions. Its looks wonderful, lots of cool eye candy, and runs fast
I like quick look and time machine is very cool, haven't had a chance
to get to spaces yet. I really like Leopard and recommend it if you
are thinking about the upgrade.

I hope everyone @ WAMUG has a wonderful 2008, and thank you all very
much for the great support you provide.

I understand that with Time Machine you need an external hard drive

www.dstore.com.au

seems to have them in stock for $1,062.05 plus $14.95 delivery,
http://www.digitalyes.com.au has them for $940.40 plus $15.80
delivery. Is

LaCie a good brand I terms of value for money.

Maybe 2 terabyte is overkill for my purposes and the 1 terabyte
Lacie Big

3. Open Garageband. Start a new song. All the standard settings are
OK.

4. Go to Track New Track and make sure to select 'Real
Instrument'. You should get a new blue track on your timeline.

5. Test your input by speaking into the microphone. You should be
able to see the meter moving in the blue section of the new track,
next to the 'left and right' pot and above the volume slider.

6. Find the big red button at the bottom of the screen, to the
right of the scissors. Prepare yourself to record. When ready,
press the big red button and recording will start.

7. When finished, press the red button again to stop recording. You
may need to press the spacebar to stop the playhead as well.

8. Drag the playhead back to the start and press the spacebar to
hear what you recorded.

Note that this is not the 'Podcast' version, as I haven't had a
chance to play with that yet, but it will do what you need. Once
you've got a handle on this, you could easily move on to the
podcast section.

I recommend Internode. A bit more expensive than some others but
you get what you pay for. Check out the add-on freebies like ABC

Go to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins. Remove AdobePDFViewer.plugin, or
do what I have done: create a new folder in the Plug-ins folder
called Disabled Plug-ins or something similar, and move
AdobePDFViewer.plugin there. Safari won't find it, but it's there
in case you ever want it again.

Just one more point though: this won't prevent PDFs from opening
directly in Safari, since it has its own built-in PDF viewer which
becomes active if there are no others available. Once the PDF has
loaded you can just use Safari's Save command to save it to your
hard drive.

Re: airport 802.11n

2007-03-31 Thread Edward Arrowsmith

Hi David

Thanks for the info.

Does this mean there is no point in getting the enabler for my Intel
based MacBook Pro unless I am going to purchase a new airport
extreme? It will have no effect on my 'old' extreme base station?

Best wishes

On 30/03/2007, at 8:09 PM, David Moyle wrote:

Hey Edward

In basic no.

The IEEE specification of IEEE 802.11n is the new standard of wireless
transfer to eventually replace 802.11g. It has a transfer rate of
108Mbps
compared to 802.11g's of only 54Mbps. The new standard is also
supposed to

get better range and quality.

Only the brand new Airport Extremes (In a square box which looks
like a
miniature Mac Mini) can work at 802.11n or any other new Access
Point which
operates at 802.11n. Now take note, the update provided by Apple
which costs
a few dollars I believe only works on the latest Intel Macs minus
the budget
17 iMac. (I just checked, it costs $2.99AUD) (Important note: The
Enabler
is included free with the new AirPort Extreme Base Station with
802.11n. If
you purchase a new AirPort Extreme Base Station, you do not need to
purchase

the Enabler separately.)

Another thing to throw into the equation is the specification of
802.11n
hasn't been ratified by the IEEE and isn't supported by many
companies or
access points, despite this Apple has released the new Apple
Airports and

the latest computers with this feature.

I hope that answered your question and didn't confuse you more..

Thanks, David Moyle

Hi

Can someone explain please how to enable 802.11n on a MacBook Pro?
Does it require purchasing a 'key' to activate it? Will doing this
improve the quality of the connection to an airport base station?

No surprises here really. The problem is almost certainly the

problem.
If you need to move the Airport further from your ADSL/Cable modem

suggest a longer cable and not a coupler.

Try pinging the ADSL modem from your Mac to see if the Airport has a
connection to the DSL modem.

I had no problem connecting to the Internet wirelessly via
AirportExpress. Recently we moved the Airport base station and added
an inline ethernet coupler to gain the extension of the ethernet
cable. Since then we are unable to connect to the web. However,
network diagnostics shows we have an airport connection, there are
five bars indicating a strong signal. My iBook thinks it is connected
by ethernet instead of airport.

Have tried all known (to us) possibilities, any suggestions greatly

in the same prcie range as you. It came out the very good value in
most reviews.

I had previously used a Sony which I liked, they are more expensive
but solid. The panasonic feels plastic-y but it was easier to use
than the Sony and the image is very good. It also allows firewire
download.

I purchased it from an online retailer, Discount Digital
Photographics: www.d-d-photographics.com.au

Definitely the cheapest ($1399) but their manner and customer service
is terrible. Personally, I wouldn't buy there again. I was also going
overseas so I got my GST back at the airport.

Good luck and Best wishes

services:summarise

2005-05-07 Thread Edward Arrowsmith

This is the best thing in OS X that I've seen for ages:
http://www.macworld.com/2005/05/secrets/juneosxhints/index.php

*Clean up text using services:summarise*
Have you ever come across a selection of text you’d like to keep—for
example, a how-to on a Web page or an article on your local paper’s
site? You may have tried copying it and pasting it into TextEdit or
Stickies, only to end up with the text and all its distracting
formatting, links, and spacing. Here’s a quick and easy workaround.

If the program you’re using supports OS X’s Services feature (as is the
case for most Apple apps, as well as The Omni Group’s products and Bare
Bones’ BBEdit), you can use the Summarize service to clean up the text
for easy saving. Start by selecting the text within the source
application, and then choose application name: Services: Summarize.

Using Font Book by itself to preview many fonts simultaneously is
difficult. So press F10 to access Exposé’s Application Windows mode
and clearly preview each font in its own window.

A new window will open, and you’ll see a cleaned-up version of your
text. Next, move the Summary Size slider to the 100% mark; this will
force the service to show every word in your original selection. Then
press Command-C to copy the text to the Clipboard (it’s already all
selected by default), switch to your final destination (a Stickies
note, a Word document, or whatever), and press Command-V to paste.

If the text isn’t in a Services-aware application, drop it into
TextEdit as your first step. If you have TextEdit in Plain Text mode
(go to TextEdit: Preferences), doing so will get rid of almost all the
formatting. Using the Summarize service will then remove any remaining
excess line breaks and other oddities.

Its not easy for a non Mac person to shop around for Macs in Perth and
not all their web sites are helpful, some are not up to date or easy to
navigate. This is on the front page of a Perth Apple retailer's web
site - it needs no comment:

I purchased my 15 PowerBook from Team Digital and had a good time of

new Mac time lag

2005-04-17 Thread Edward Arrowsmith
This is not necessarily a complaint but a description of utter
frsutration on behalf of someone who orded a G4 iBook over a month ago.

A young person named (lets say, Tara) wanted to buy a new computer. She
knew how happy we were with our iBook and PowerBook. She had a play
with these computers and enjoyed the experience. The decision to
purchase a new computer is a huge outlay, and she is also a switcher.
Tara finally decided to get a PowerBook 15 Superdrive with lots of
RAM.

I recommended an Apple retailer in Perth as I had some reasonably
satisfactory experience with, 'better than they were under the old
management' they once told me. However, my perception and the retailers
perception of themselves are not in accord.

Five weeks after ordering, no sign of the PowerBook and very weak
excuses offered by the retailer after they promised two weeks. The
problem is this switcher is about to switch again, back to Windows.
Quite a few others that have been watching the process have now lost
interest. They all like the look of the Mac and the interface and
iTunes and IPhoto and GarageBand. These are young people in their 20s
and are very influenced by these things. But they are also influenced
by getting something they really want without having to wait over a
month for it after ordering it.

I feel the retailer should take more responsibility as they are about
to lose not just one customer, but also myself as a second (and I won't
be recommending them again), and potentially more, as all those
watching this episode are quite appalled at the time lag and would
definitely not make a purchase there. This crew is also very
iPod/Shuffle savvy and this market is also lost to this retailer.

If Tara had been offered a loan of a similar second hand computer it
may have eased her anxiety and enabled her to become familiar with the
OS. The retailer appears to have little interest in Tara as a buyer
since she made her order. The 'service' ceased once the deal was done.

I don't know anything about the politics of Apple resellers, Apple
Australia and Apple, but from the point of view of a customer who may
potentially make another purchase in future, or recommend others to
purchase similar stuff from a retailer, this its a very poor reflection
of all three.
