I would rate XP Home as a kind of Crippleware. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crippleware I use Bootcamp and Parallels but mostly the latter. Parallels even lets me use Windows98/Protools Free. CommPost: Zytech newsletter/specials
Hi all, Its been quite a while since the last newsletter, and there is quite a lot to write about, but I will try and keep this short. Firstly, congratulations to Michael from Mount Pleasant, who was our latest newsletter subscriber winner. Now you can have your cake and eat it too! The new Intel models have brought along with them some newer software for running Windows (I know, a dollar in the swear jar). You can read about and download the Apple attempt here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/. For my money though, parallels is the better option as it allows you to run both OS's at the same time. See http://www.parallels.com/ for further details - and, see our special below. For a detailed comparison, see this article: http://www.macuser.com/xp-on-mac/parallels_workstation_vs_boot.php There has also been good news on the hard drive front as well, with perpendicular technology boosting capacities of hard drives which Seagate has already brought to market. Other technology just around the corner, will allow current hard drives to experience a ten fold increase in capacity - more on this in another newsletter. Seagate by the way, is in the process of taking over Maxtor. In an industry first, Samsung has produced a hybrid hard disk drive that combines the traditional hard disk with flash memory. The hybrid drive is meant to not only improve system performance, but also extend battery life and will especially be useful in laptops. Performance stats indicate battery life is extended by between 8 per cent and 10 per cent, and boot up with a hybrid drive should start between 8 seconds and 25 seconds faster. Microsoft is building support for hybrid drives into Windows Vista under the name ReadyDrive. It's one of a number of technologies the company is building into the new operating system to help improve system performance. These include ReadyBoost, which allows a removable flash memory device to act as system memory, thus providing an instant memory boost without having to install new RAM boards, and SuperFetch, which preloads frequently used applications into memory to improve system responsiveness. And now to the specials: Latest 1GB memory for the Intel Macs now reduced to $169 inc. gst. (Even less for bulk deals - dealers welcome). Get a 256MB flash drive for only $0.05 when you buy Virus BarrierX4 for $78.95 (OEM version), heres the link: http://zytech.com.au/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODProduct_Code=SOIVirusBarrierX4 We are also doing our 250GB FireCube Firewire drives for only $269, or $355 for a 250GB SATA drive with SATA/FW400/FW800/USB2.0 just see our home page at: http://zytech.com.au/Merchant2/merchant.mvc? Also, as mentioned in the article above, we are doing a special on Parllels software. For a limited time you can buy the software for an introductory price of only $69 (CD only with licence key), see: http://zytech.com.au/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODStore_Code=ZOSFAFMDSProduct_Code=SOPDeskMac We also have a demo ViewSonic 19VG900 for $329 with free delivery to Perth metro area, just email me for details. And lastly, Samsung have a great special till the end of July, but the 21 LCD monitor for $989 and they will give you a DVD player for free. The first shipments from Samsung sold out in weeks. Check the details here: http://zytech.com.au/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODProduct_Code=AVS215TWP For all you IT requirements, remember we deal with Australia's leading IT distributors so can supply your needs no matter how big or small. Re: GIGs on HDD
Hi Tom, Here's the explanation for a 160GB, same logic applies to all sizes: A true Gigabyte is actual 1024x1024x1024 bytes. But the whole computer industry rounds this to 1000x1000x1000 for ease of understanding. So when the manufacturers make a 160GB drive it is actually 160,000,000,000 bytes whereas the computer will see it correctly as 160,000,000,000 divided by (1024x1024x1024) = 149.01GB. In most cases, older DiskWarrior 3 CDs cannot start up newer machines because they do not have the necessary System files. At press time, this included important programs such as Microsoft¹s Virtual PC, and disk-repair programs such as Alsoft¹s DiskWarrior and Micromat¹s TechTool Pro. CommPost: Zytech newsletter/specials
Hi all, Its just amazing how quickly this year is going, and with a tsunami of new technology and products expected, our heads will be kept spinning all year. Congratualtions by the way to Ken from Seven Hills who was our latest newsletter winner for February. Storage solutions are conintuing to be a growth area with the prevalence of digital audio and video, and to help with our appetite Seagate will be releasing a 160G-byte Portable Hard Drive that weighs less than half a kilo. It is expected to cost around $500 when it goes on sale. The new drive is based on an emerging technology called perpendicular recording. You may recall we discussed this emerging technology in one of our earlier newsletters. Just to refresh, older drives store data by lining up bits on a flat drive from end to end, but perpendicular recording stacks bits of information vertically. This frees up more space on the drive for data, and will allow hard-drive makers to continue pushing the boundaries of storage capacity. And now for a bit of visual stimulation - this could be the future of the way in which we interact with our screens. Being very reminiscent of the minority report, check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp-y3ZNaCqs With our quest for higher and higher speeds, IBM have found a method of boosting retrieval and sharing of information by as much as 600%. 'Project Fastball' used the combination of the compute power of ASC Purple, the massive IBM-designed Blue Gene supercomputer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories in Livermore, Calif., and IBM's General Parallel File System (GPFS) software. The combination demonstrated more than 102GB per second of sustained read-and-write performance on a single file, which is more than a 600 percent jump in the speed of data, said Chris Maher, development director for HPC development at IBM. The GPFS software was used to manage the flow of information between the thousands of processors and disk storage devices in the supercomputer. The project used 104 Power-based eServer p575 nodes and 416 storage controllers. The project resulted in a file system of 1.6 petabytes, one of the largest in the world. The performance of the file was maintained as more than 1,000 clients pushed workloads into the file. The speed equated to the downloading of 25,000 songs in a second. But, having said that, I still learnt a valuable lesson - here's what happened. Several weeks ago, I applied the Microsoft Office 2004 SP2 and things went totally haywire with Entourage. I know there's many people out there who don't like Entourage and while instances like this certainly have swayed me, I still believe it to be a great all round package that does much more that just manage mail. Well the patch for SP2 was applied, the computer rebooted and Entourage failed to load. I checked that the file size was below 4GB, and then attempted the repair. After several attempts I was in panic mode, and turned to Microsoft support for help. We copied, moved, uninstalled, reinstalled etc etc, only to find on starting up Entourage - nothing. Microsoft suspected that my data file had been corrupt for some time which is why it didn't start up properly - and thats where Microsoft's support ended. But I kept calm (OK maybe I was calmer after an hour) and reverted back to my backup which was a few weeks old, which was certainly better than starting from scratch. I now understand why some of you justifiably stay clear of Entourage. The 2 lessons I learned from this were 1. Always make extra copies of your data before you let someone else have a play, and 2. With mission critical data, you can never be too safe and you should not only back up, but keep different versions as well. Now for something new - Sharp has developed a new LCD (liquid crystal display) panel that is capable of showing different images when viewed from the right or left hand sides. The panels are soon to go into production and will make possible people being able to watch different programs simultaneously, or computer screens capable of giving battling gamers different views of the same game. The screen works by displaying each image in alternating columns of pixels, which also means the resulting picture has a lower resolution. Onto our specials - we've started selling the Harmony remote control from Logitech. These have a RRP of $399, but we have them as an introductory special at $288. These would make a fantastic Xmas gift (yes it is around the corner). CommPost: Zytech newsletter/specials
Hi all, What a great win for the Eagles over Adelaide last weekend and here's hoping for a WA win for the Grand Final!! Congratulations also are in order for Vicki who is the latest winner of our newsletter draw. Don't forget to get your friends to join up and possibly win a prize. Our first item for this newsletter relates to the latest software update for Java 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 Release 2 with a warning that users are reporting severe problems with the update. The updates can cause instability and crashes. Further information is available here: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20050916083526155 News that Fujitsu has developed a flexible liquid crystal display (LCD) panel that can maintain the displayed image even with no power supply. The name given to the technology is 'cholesteric' LCD panel, and the first display at the Fujitsu Forum 2005 event in Tokyo measured 3.8inch diagonally. Two screens were on disply at the forum, the first a coloured one showing changing images, even though they took several seconds to change, and a monochrome display that had been powered off for two weeks. Fujitsu expect the technology to reach commercialization in about 2 to 3 years and is a result of 5 years of research. The cholesteric displays require very little power to refresh, so images can be changed by drawing power from weak radio waves used in contactless smart cards, like those in use on many public transport systems around the world. Other companies developing the technology include Philips Research and Kent Displays, based in Kent, Ohio. We've made a number of price reductions throughout our store promising even better value and competitiveness than before so please take a look. Remember too that we have a access to a wide range of IT and technology products and we would be happy to quote on any of your requirements. New from Macpower is the 'M9'. This fantastic hard drive enclosure has some great features: -LED indication for access power Smart power swith allowing the M9 to power up or down in tandem with your Mac Mini -Interactive smart cooling system Thermal probe which automatically regulates and varies fan speed according to temperature of the hard drive -User configurable fan settings Passive heat sink to radiate heat away from the hard drive -Extra large heat sink to radiate heat away from the hard drive -Concealed ventilation holes -USB 2.0 High-speed 3 port hub -Firewire 1394a 3 port hub Swith for firewire or USB external hard disk mode -Special micro security slot designed to allow the M9 to be anchored Check out the pricing details here: http://zytech.com.au/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGYCategory_Code=EM9 So now to the specials: We've reduced our 200GB Firewire drives to only $262: http://zytech.com.au/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODStore_Code=ZOSFAFMDSProduct_Code=EDGF208 100GB Hitachi 2.5 drives with 3 year warranties now only $325: http://zytech.com.au/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODStore_Code=ZOSFAFMDSProduct_Code=HDH2100548 Our 250GB firewire 800/400/USB 2.0 external drives reduced to $378: http://zytech.com.au/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODStore_Code=ZOSFAFMDSProduct_Code=EDG8258 Our Bluetooth portable hands free car kits now only $79: http://zytech.com.au/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODProduct_Code=ZYT306 Till next time. Hi all! Well over half of the year already gone and there's been another exciting release from Apple with the Mighty Mouse, but more on that later. The 'Cell' recently made a public debut to a standing-room only audience at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC). The Cell has been described as a supercomputer on a chip, and its multi-core design architecture leapfrogging the current single microprocessors. The multi-core design allows chips to run more efficiently, use less power and generate less heat. The processor is made up of one PowerPC Processing Element (PPE) and eight Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs). The PPE feeds the instructions to the SPE's. The SPE's are able to work independantly of the other SPE's which results in eight tasks being run simultaneously. Beneficiaries of the 'Cell' may include devices requiring huge processing in realtime, such as multi-channel HD broadcasting programs, as well as mega-pixel digital still and movie images captured by high-resolution CCD/CMOS imagers. But the first is expected to be the Playstation3 - this will be a huge leap in processing power. When will it make its way into the Mac? We'll have to wait and see! Heard of Dashboard? Well Yahoo has bought Konfabulator (like Dashboard) which provides a platform for small widgets that show news headlines, weather data, and stock information among other things on a user's desktop. And they've made it free for both Mac and Windows users - see: http://www.konfabulator.com/ to download it. Is the Mouse Mightier than the sword? In Apple's case it certainly is. Apple have put more functionality into this mouse than most multifunction mice out there. It has also been specifically designed to work with Tiger. Re: LCD TV/Monitors
Hi Reg, There are quite a few around at the moment, but resolution still tends to be poor in the larger size monitors. From what I've seen, the 23 monitors with 1280 x 768 resolution are more for display/TV purposes than being used as a monitor, but I guess it depends on your expectations as well. You certainly won't find anything at half these prices (unless their damaged stock etc.), but I can give you very competitive pricing on Sony, Philips, BenQ, Samsung, Viewsonic + many more other brand. CommPost: Zytech specials
Hi all! Congratulations to Mr Tran from Melbourne for being our lucky newsletter subscriber for May-05. We have a huge end of the year with some great specials from Zytech. First cab off the rank though, you will no doubt have heard about the 'engagement' of Intel and Apple. Apple plan to introduce the intel processor in their Macs beginning June 2006 with the expectation that all Macs will have moved across to Intel by the end of 2007. Its a big leap of faith to move away from the PowerPC and Steve Jobs says that Intel have the best 'roadmap' for the next 10 years. Its going to be very interesting to see how the wedding goes and whether they will successfully consumate the marriage! All I can say is I'd hate to see the pre-nup! Apple have realised that with speed being an ever increasing issue, they have progressively lost ground with their competitors advancements, and I believe the move will ultimately swing more consumers over to Apple which will lead to more profits and more being spent on RD to keep Apple out there leading the pack. That can only be a good thing surely (?) As the end of the financial year is fast approaching, we've focussed this newsletter on specials, but you'll have to be quick as these specials are only valid for orders placed until 30th June. Have a look at these: END OF FINANCIAL YEAR SALE PLEASE NOTE pricing for some of these items will be adjusted at time of processing. http://zytech.com.au/Merchant2/merchant.mvc? 250GB FireCube external drives - free delivery 300GB FireCube external drives - 10% off iMac350 $225 and only $9.95 freight costs iMac500 $375 and only $9.95 freight costs Memory orders greater than $150 - free delivery 256MB Multifunction device with voice recorder for only $50 with any order $2000 or more Bluetooth mice a crazy $69 Radeon graphic cards - free delivery 42 plasma screen just $2499 - thats not a misprint 40GB 2.5 FireStar drives superspecial of $225 We've also had such a great response to those iStation Speakers, we've decided to continue the special. Hi all! Congratualations to Dave from Minnamurra who is our lucky winner for Apr-05 (Yes we are a bit late!) just for being a subscriber. Our May winner will be revealed in our next newsletter. In the every changing face of storage, Samsung Electronics recently announced a breakthrough in flash memory for mass storage with a 4GB flash device in a 70-nanometer chip. The 70nm form factor will replace the 90nm chip that held 2GB, and it will allow for 50 percent higher performance, writing at 16MBps. According to some analysts, flash memory promises to hold some very exciting future prospects. Included in this is the possible replacement of hard drive storage with flash memory storage. The advantages are, increased reliability (no spinning hard drives to worry about), and reduced power consumption being the major ones. Other industry analysts however, are quick to pour water on this idea, saying that the cost differential between the technologies is far too great and as flash memory prices come down, disk drives will also come down maintaining this competitive edge. The battle between disk and flash can be seen in the MP3 market where the iPod and iPod mini use disk and the iPod shuffle uses flash. Samsung, is producing the flash in volume now and is ramping up from 4,000 wafers per month in June to 15,000 per month by the end of the year. Although Intel also produces flash memory, it is the market leader in what is called NOR flash, which is used in cellular phones because it stores both the code that drives a cellular phone and the data. Samsung is the market leader in NAND flash, which is used only for data and is typically found in digital cameras and MP3 players. It will be interesting to see if flash memory makes its way into computers, no doubt laptops to begin with. We've added a couple of new products; firstly the iStation Speakers allows you to play your iPod just like a mini HiFi. The price is reduced only for a week so you'll have to be quick to snap up this special. http://zytech.com.au/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODProduct_Code=iPODStation We've also just introduced a 300GB drive for those truly serious about their storage requirements, and at $444 it represents great value for this much storage. Hi all! Samsung has introduced a Serial ATA II hard disk drive boasting twice the speed of SATA I hard drives. The drives, available in 80, 120 160GB versions run at 3GB per second (300MB data rate on the bus), spin at 7200rpm and have an 8.9 millisecond average seek time and an 8MB cache buffer. The drives also feature Native Command Queuing (NCQ) allowing the drives to multitask. The NCQ feature has been available in SCSI based products for some time, and may be the key in prompting users to switch from SATA I to II. NCQ will allow the drive to accept a queue of commands like bringing up 5 blocks of data, and put them in the appropriate order. The drives are approximately half the cost of SCSI making them extremely price attractive as well. No doubt the technology will gradually make its way across to other manufacturers and eventually into PC's. In the last few day Apple has released iTunes 4.8. It includes new Music Store features and support for transferring contacts and calendars from your computer to your iPod (requires Mac OS X version 10.4 on your computer). If your version hasn't been updated from 'Software update' you can grab it from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ Heard about Tiger? Well of course you have! This review talks about how interested Windows users have become about Tiger, who knows, some people may even convert :). Re: Firewire 800 HDD
Philippe, I don't believe that Firewire will be going anywhere too soon! There are certain advantages and disadvantages with each technology, but if anything was already that superior to Firewire you certainly would have seen it out there - at least in print. PC's have been equipped with Firewire for sometime now, and importantly the trend is increasing not declining. Many devices now come with both USB2 and Firewire for convenience, but I know which technology is my preference by far. Would rectify a few problems especially with the VTR's for HD coming online and the troubles Panasonic and Apple are having with the AJ-HD1200A. Sadly if the CEO of Weibetech (a Firewire hard disk manufacturer) is correct (see link and excerpt below), Apple may be deprecating it's commitment to Firewire 800 and possibly heading in the direction of SATA bus technologies for external as well as internal connections. It is hard to imagine that Firewire 400 won't stick around with so much video gear using it - but at least for future external hard drives, it sounds like Firewire 1600 and 3200 may just be pipe-dreams. Perhaps that is why Firewire 800 still hasn't made it down to the iMac or into video gear and perhaps why Apple hasn't fixed the performance problems with Firewire 800: http://www.barefeats.com/fire47.html Who knows which way it will go? :-( -Mart Thanks for this info Mart, and to Rob and Shay for their comments. That is now making it difficult for me as I was just about to place an order with Daniel for a Firewire external drive, admitedly a FW400. The question now is: Do I want to back a moribund horse? I thoroughly love Apple and its product, but at times, as a small user of its products, I cannot help but feel I am spending the hard-earned cabbages on something which may not be there tomorrow. FireWire seems to be going the way of the wonderful Newton. Wonder how those who bought these pricey, although brilliant, PDAs feel about the abondonment of this platform by Apple? I think that Apple should think more than twice before trumpeting some new technologies which they are not sure to back all the way. Boy, did they ever flaunt the superiority of Firewire! Maybe they are right, but commercially a real black hole I guess that with the new iPods coming with only the USB cable, the writing was already on the walls for FW? Yes? I'd feel sorry to see FW go though .. Regards, Philippe

Hi all! We start off this latest newsletter with some reports of superdrives not burning at their advertised speeds. The particular drives affected appear to be the one manufactured by Matshita and feature in the in iMac G5 and 2005 PowerBook G4's. A number of applications are affected including Apple's own Disk Utility, Roxio's Toast and a number of other recording applications. The problem manifests itself either by not be able able to access the option to burn at that speed, or the procedure to burn repeatedly fails. For further information see http://www.macfixit.com/. Want to upgrade your Mac Mini's RAM? - Well according to Apple's specifications, authorized service technicians, will have to install a larger module in the mini's single RAM slot. Any attempts at opening the case to install extra memory may void the computer's warranty, but read on.Apple has stated on numerous occasions that though the warranty's wording states that any opening of the case may render coverage void, if nothing is broken during the process the warranty will remain intact. Some members of the list may also want to comment - good and bad? Just one thing to note with the off the shelf products is that you will only get 1 year warranty on the LaCie external drive, whereas our drives have 1 year on the enclosure and at least 3 years on the drive (8MB cache drives). Hi all! Heard the hype about Skype? The telco companies will be in for a huge battle over the next few years with VoIP technology set to boom. Skype's version of Voice over Internet Protocol software is now about to be become standard on some mobile handsets with the i-mate brand becoming one of the first to have this software pre-installed. These phones use Microsoft's Windows Mobile 2003 software for Pocket PCs and have both GSM/GPRS and Wi-Fi wireless LAN capability. With Skype software, you make the calls over a broadband internet connection through a Wi-Fi network, bypassing the provider of the GSM/GPRS service. Skype makes the peer-to-peer VoIP softgware which allows free calls over the internet. The Luxembourg based company's SkypeOut service also allows users to make calls around the world to fixed lines and mobiles at a fraction of the cost of conventional international calls. Last year Skype joined with Siemens to offer a USB adapter device for some of their cordless phones that allowed users to make Skype calls. Re: MFC
Hi all, Can definitely vouch for the Brother MFC (incl. Fax), I've just recently bought the 5840CN which has dual input trays. The compactness of the machine is made possible by 'new' technology (they claim) that feeds the ink to the print head via tubes thus eliminating a great deal of internal space normally required by other printers. All the paper trays are at the front of the machine which also means easy access. With an inbuilt network interface its brilliant. We sell both at Zytech, so feel free to browse at: http://zytech.com.au/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGYCategory_Code=PR Kind regards, Greg Satti www.zytech.com.au PO Box 758, Bunbury WA 6230 Ph: (08) 9721 1125 Fx: (08) 9721 1126 Mob: 0423 558 636 The online data storage technology store On 31/1/05 6:15 PM, Kathy Quinlan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: michael.hawkins wrote: I've had a Brother 3820CN printer/copier/fax/scanner for a year and am very pleased with it. I'd avoid Lexmark unless ink consumption and ink costs have improved since the z35 printer. My printer costs a packet to run. Mike Hawkins. I can second the Brother MFC 3820CN, I love the media slots, and it is not used via USB, I just access it over the network :) The consumerbles are VERY cheap at ~$20 a tank, which is not bad as they do not all need replacing at once :) I even have a HL1440 laser from Brother, and it runs faultlesly printing 400 page manuals in manual duplex :) Regards, Kat.

Re: External Hard Drive Storage
Hi Rod, The best value external drives are really 160/200/or 250GB, with 250GB offering the lowest cost per GB. The prices differences between 2MB and 8MB drives are minimal and when you consider your getting a 3yr warranty on 8MB drives instead of 1 yr on the 2MB drives, this is definitely the better way to go. All 3.5 external drives are 7200rpm, but if you want portability then you have the choice in the 2.5 drives of 4200rpm/5400rpm or 7200rpm. 7200rpm would be preferable, but 5400rpm would do. Again, I'd pay extra to go for the 8MB version to get the extra warranty. Hope that helps with your decision. Hi All, Thanks Tobes for the compliment, although I had to read it twice to make sure it was a compliment and not grouped within the brackets!! We do try hard to have the most relevant items in stock, and I think in most cases we do a great job. Some items can be shipped direct from our suppliers and this helps us to cut down our costs and provide better pricing. It also means that we can offer the latest products and we are not stuck with outdated stock that we are trying to sell. But I do understand the frustration as some of our suppliers that we deal with certainly lack in communication skills. There have also been a few instances where our suppliers have not been able to deliver as promised so its hard to give absolute guarantees all the time. Re: external HD storage backup
Hi Bill, Zytech has predominantly sold WD and Hitachi based on the years of experience that Keith had in the industry. But, as you've probably already read from the other posts, you do get bad batches and this can occur across the board. The Maxtor range (which we'll be carrying shortly) offer an out of the box warranty for 1 year, but you have the option to extend this for a second and third year. LaCie's warranty period for external drives are also 1 year. All 8MB cache drives that we sell carry a 3 year warranty while the enclosures carry 1 year, this is whether you buy them as a complete external hard drive unit or individually. Hi all, Thanks Mart - I was waiting for a lead to join into the conversation. I think service is the one thing that sets businesses apart, and more than that its attitude. If the right attitude is displayed then service follows along with the return business.
