Re: A MS Word puzzle

Have you tried opening the document in Numbers?

 Thanks for the comments, Peter.
Let me emphasise the problem again.
   1. The document basically a table (Word .doc from 93 PC version) opens
and displays correctly in my MS Office 2011, Word 14.3.9
   2. When I print, on any of three printers, a few values, which are
calculated within Word are incorrect, some are unaffected. Non
 calculated values are fine.
   3. When I save as PDF from the print dialog corruption occurs as in
 printing
   4. If I open the document in Acrobat 11, the same corruption occurs
   5. Text Edit can not open the document sensibly
   6. Preview opens and prints correctly, though the setting out is
 disturbed
   7. If I save from Word as .rtf, then open and print from Text Edit,
the numbers are fine but once again the setting out is disturbed.

 All in all, most annoying!

I regularly receive a report in Word.doc format from someone with a
PC and Word 2003. The document is in fact a table and has some
calculations embedded in it. It displays correctly on screen but
some, not all, of the calculated cells have incorrect values in them
when printed. The same thing happens when I save as PDF so I suspect
a postscript mismatch is the culprit. Though it looks awful it saves
as .rtf correctly. I have latest MS Office and it gets it wrong if I
 save as a .docx.
 Most annoying, comments please!

 A few ideas:

 1. What happens if you open the file in something else that will read
.doc files, eg, TextEdit or Open Office or any of its clones
(NeoOffice, etc - assuming have any of the latter)?

 2. Do you know the syntax of the calculations? Could you re-enter them
into your onscreen document? A bit of a nuisance but it might work.

 3. I'm also wondering if there isn't some reliance on a macro set up
 which isn't available to you

Sorry I can't of more help. It does seem likely that there may be some
internal structural problems with the file.

Re: Startup problem iMac power PC

2013-11-23 Thread Merv Bond
Sorry for the delay in responding.
Did as you suggested Ronni, but no change - including the vacuuming and
the use of my puffer for removing dust from photos.

A day or so later one of my sons, the only one immersed in Macs, called
by and went through the procedures as well. He agreed with you Ronni,
and Tim, that it was a capacitor problem. He had had a similar
experience with one of his own iMacs, and although the capacitors had
been replaced by an experienced technician, the problem did not go away.
A new power box was the only solution. So, my wife is considering her
options - will keep in touch - but don't hold your breathe.
Incidentally, her machine has firewire 400 only. Using SuperDuper I had
been making bootable backups to an external disk that only had
800firwire sockets. I used a cable adapted for this situation. I made
one desperate attempt to install one of bootable copies back on the
'injured' iMac but it did not recognise the back-up. Maybe I did
something wrong or was trying the impossible.
Regards to all
Merv

 Hi Merv,

What were your results please; is the problem fixed?

If you haven't recently cleaned the dust from all of the intake and
exhaust vents, I would suggest you do.

Turn the iMac OFF and disconnect power cable anything attached to the
 iMac.
Find the air vents, there is one along the top, one along the bottom,
and in some models there is a circular one in back.
Use a vacuum cleaner to get the worst off, then use compressed air to
 blow the rest out.

  3. Wait 10-50 seconds.
  4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding
the power button on the back of the computer.
  5. Let go of the power button.
  6. Then turn on your Mac again

 _*Reset PRAM and NVRAM*_

  1. Shut down your iMac
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this
key combination before the gray screen appears and before the
 chime sound.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the
 startup sound for three times.
  6. Release the keys.

If this does not fix, you might have problem with the capacitors on
 the logic board.

To get all the following features seems to cost a premium:

The Fuji Xerox DocuPrint CM205 fw has everything including wifi but only

Susan and Martin
Thank you for exploring this topic with me.
I did a search on consequences of jailbreaking an ipad and a telling one
was:
'if you install new firmware updates released by Apple for the iPad,
those updates will restore the iPad to a non-jailbroken state, removing
any third-party apps or device customizations made while jailbroken.'
For more see:

Whether this is due to legal or technical problems I don't know, although it

any universal SMS service that is free.

Things that work in the USA may not work here because we have different
carriers with different approaches. If whatsapp is actually free it probably
still requires you to sign up and give an email address. I would expect a
huge avalanche of spam that may even get past your ISP providers anti spam

 somehow!

Skype's paid service is an example of one where you pay (as you do when
using SMS on your mobile phone) and it allows you to contact anyone. As its
the same as using SMS on a mobile phone I would suggest that she consider
it. Although their security may be flawed at times they are big enough to
care is there is a public outcry, so would at least try to have good
 security.

Has anyone used Just Answer as a search service for obtaining

If so and you have the photos you want already for insertion why not

iPad:access mail attachments

2013-02-17 Thread Merv Bond
I created a document in Pages and exported it as aWord document to a
colleague for appraisal.
He said he had sent it back with comments, the comments being linked to
the appropriate point of insertion in the text.
I received his response by email and took the email using my iPad 2 (iOS
5.1.1; Pages 1.7.1). I double clicked on the document image in his email
and it opened in what I assumed (perhaps incorrectly), that the document
was opened in Pages. No changes were visible !!

I downloaded the email on my iMac, double clicked the attachment, and it
opened in Pages with the changes clearly marked.

Because the promo for Pages stated tracking was now part its attributes
I assumed (not again!!), that the Pages document would show tracking.

Is there an alternative way to access an attachment on iPad so that I
know I am using pages, not an iOS text application, and perhaps see the
recommended changes?

Advice appreciated.

Tap on ‘Open In “app name” to open the attachment in a pre-selected other app.

Each button has an apps icon and name next to it.

Flash back 1999

2013-02-01 Thread Merv Bond
No doubt some of you will remember this story circulating in 1999.
Merv

Bill Clinton, Bill Gates (the Microsoft King) and a priest were leaving
from New York on a private jet on the eve of the new millenium. They
were heading for Rome to celebrate the occasion with the Pope.

Just before board a young man with long hair and a backback came up to
the group and begged to be allowed to fly to Rome with them. The priest
was very taken with the young man’s zeal to be in Rome for the 2000
commoration of the birth of Christ and convinced Clinton and Gates that
it was OK to take him.

The plane took off at 11.30pm on Dec 31, 1999. Just before midnight
they were cruising at 35,000 feet. On the stroke of midnight the
engines cut out. The pilot announced that the computers controlling the
engines had shut down and consequently the engines. They would crash.

The cabin steward announced that there were only three parachutes for
the four passengers.

Bill Clinton said he was the leader of the most powerful country in the
world and so must survive. So saying he took a chute and jumped.

Bill Gates said he was the most intelligent man in the world and must
survive and jumped.

The priest turned to the young man and said, “I am an old man and you
are young and have everything to live for. You take the remaining chute.”

The young man replied, “Not to worry Father. The most intelligent man
in the world just jumped with my backpack.”

Disabling Java in Safari is highly recommended for safe computing.
You should enable it only when on a trusted site that requires it.

 3. Select the Java plugin(s) and click disable.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is urging computer users to

The DHS' Computer Emergency Readiness Team warned Thursday evening that it

servers and computers and devices (or dial in boxes), and sometimes if you
happen to get a specific one it lets you do one thing, and another one
doesn't. (That's why sometimes you can have a great connection one day, then
the next if it drops off and reconnects and you get another Server box it
can be not so good. :o)

Trying to be fairly generic with that,..and hopefully doesn't across too
poorly, just offering some ideas of why it can be. :o)
But the main thing it's all working.

Oh, as an aside, something similar is slowly happening with Telstra/Bigpond
clients. Telstra have decided at some point obviously they no longer want to
house email. So they've (obviously) done some deal with Microsoft and a lot
of clients emails are being palmed off from Telstra to Hotmail. (so the
mail.bigpond.com incoming setting no longer works, and clients are finding
they now have to use pop3.live.com - which is the incoming setting for
Hotmail). The strange thing is that so many of Telstra clients don't
appear to know this. (I must admit the first time I stumbled across it I was
a bit unaware fully - vaguely knew but didn't sink in). And even though
it's being done for a lot of people, I'm surprised that s it' s been poorly
advised from Telstra, as so many don't' realise.

not exactly the same as what yours was, but just to sort of tie in the
changing of settings type principal. Ok, it probably wasn't the
 same,…lol,..but hey, I like sharing interesting stories,…lol :)

 Glad it's all working :)

 Kind regards
 Daniel

Hi Kev
Launch Eudora. In the main menu click on Eurdora and run down to
Preference. Top of the list Getting Started. Click on that and a box
occurs with User Name, Mail Server, Real Name, SMTP Server and Email

Fill these in as per Ronni's recent email and you are up and running.

BTW I have used Eudora for years and the only problem I have with it is

Blocked printer nozzle

2012-11-19 Thread Merv Bond
I am running an Epson Stylus Office 600TX600FW.
Yesterday I printed a map and it came out in purple and blue hues.
This morning I checked the ink levels and the magenta is low but OK.
Did a nozzle test and yellow did not show up.
Cleaned and tested the heads twice but yellow refused to show.
In the ink levels it is showing at 100% full.
Took out the yellow cartridge _ went through the cartridge replacement
procedure to do this_the cartridge showed some dampness so I assume the
nozzle in the printer is blocked.
Can this be fixed? By whom?
Your advice appreciated.

Re: Blocked printer nozzle

2012-11-19 Thread Merv Bond
Hi Ronni
Thanks for the suggestions.
Yes, I am using genuine Epson cartridges.
This time instead of using the utility application on my Mac I went to
the Setup menu on the printer. It probably makes no difference but worth
a try. Did a nozzle test. A hint of yellow appeared.
Still within the Setup menu I then did a head clean.
I was next going to do another nozzle check but the Magenta had run out.
It had been low so I suppose the head cleaning episodes drained it.
Replaced the Magenta and waited for the reload testing procedure.
Did a nozzle check and all the colours appeared.
I have a test page made up of four 25 mm squares, one colour to each
square. Ran that and solid colour came out in each square. Success!!

Thank you for the encouragement to have another go and for the
additional tips should this happen in the future.
Regards
Merv

On 20/11/12 11:36 AM, Ronni Brown wrote:
 Hi Merv,

Are they genuine Epson Ink Cartridges?
If so first try suggestions below.

 1. Remove the cartridge and reinstall it.
 2. Power cycle the printer, and then remove the cartridge and reinstall it.
 3. If the cartridge heads are blocked then soak them in window cleaning
solution or warm water and then clean with a soft cotton swab.
 4. If the cartridge has ink and still the printer does not print then the
circuit of the cartridge may have failed.

If the printer still doesn’t recognise the ink cartridge, replace the ink
cartridge with a New Retail cartridge.

Try reinstalling and charging it a few more times. If all else fails you have
 a defective cartridge.
It happens sometimes whereby for one reason or another the chip refuses to
register, even in the Epson Brand.
If this is the case, nothing short of exchanging the cartridge will solve
 your problem.

Remove the cartridge and rub a soft tissue over the gold part (chip) of the
 cartridge. Then replace.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

I know I am running close to the deadline but I am about to fill out the

It is a common ploy to defend oneself by saying that everybody else is

is that only 17 suicides were verified over a 5 year period.

This may sound like a lot until you realise that if Foxconn had the same

that same timeframe out of their 1.2 million workers.

Make no mistake about it, these sorts of complaints are nothing but

I have been frustrated in recent years at the amount of unbalanced commentary
in much of the media about things like this. The continual tendency to tear
down those who do well that is such a feature of the Australian psyche is
unfortunately all too evident on the Internet as well.

In the case of Apple it almost seems to be an orchestrated campaign for many
elements of the media to fixate on some manufactured negative issue with each
product release and blow it out of all proportion. Examples include the lack
of a keyboard on the original iPhone, the non-removable battery, the
supposedly *hot* iPad which was cooler than most other tablets, the Aussie 4G
issue and now this $35 adapter.

Where was the outcry when Samsung changed their adapter from their 30-pin
dock connector (which they copied from Apple) in the Galaxy S2 to the Galaxy
S3 without a free adapter for S2 owners? What's wrong with buying a cheaper
third party adapter than Apple's for the new iPhone 5 - they're already being
 advertised.

Why should Apple give it away free? Apple already gives lots of free or cheap
stuff out - far cheaper OS update prices than Microsoft, far cheaper app
prices than desktop software, free iCloud services, the cheap cloud-hosted
iTunes Match service even for pirated music, free iOS system updates, free
Find My iPhone and Find my Friends apps, free Maps GPS navigation app, free
iTunes Remote app, etc etc. How many gestures of goodwill does Apple have to
make? What's the big deal about this adapter?

What other company has stuck with the same adapter and port on their devices
for a decade? Why is there no outcry over the ridiculous number of different
USB port sizes and shapes out there that you have to buy different cables and
adapters for each different device? Why did I have to pay $400 for a new
remote key fob for my Landrover(). ;-(

It is this unbalanced commentary that just gets my goat!

Re: Proposed name change to Apple Users WA

2012-09-12 Thread Merv Bond
1 Thank you Pete for clarifying the Special Meeting requirements. Unless
specified otherwise in the Constitution (Rules) then the Act, as you
say, prevails and 28 days apply.
2 As suggested by Ronni the legal use of the word Apple does need
further exploration.
3 Has the 'no post unless you are a financial member' brought the issue
of membership into a sharper focus, hence the campaign?
4 The tone of the third paragraph of the original mail-out on 10/9/12
sounded like the mission statement of a business rather than a self help
community of Apple enthusiasts. Although we have some members who are
professionals in IT, most of us are not. We try hard to help each other
and people act on our advice at their peril.
5 As WAMUG the efforts of our more knowledgeable members and useful
examples of things that worked for our less qualified members have
earned us a reputation of providing high quality assistance both
nationally and internationally. Re-badging would result in having to
rebuild that reputation.
6 Personally I have no problem in saying I am a WAMUG (way mug), member
and follow it by saying we are no mugs.
7 The Committee's efforts to reinvigorate membership and meeting
attendance is commendable. However, we must do it keeping in mind that
we are a self help community of Apple enthusiasts.

Merv

Hi Ronni and all other WAMUGGERS.

I'd just like to address two points from a personal perspective to put your
 minds at ease.

 1. Domain name. Knowing that the name change would invoke healthy public
debate on a public forum and also knowing that there are people out there
(not WAMUGGERS!!) who snap up possible domain names to hold out for 'ransom',
so to speak, a couple of domain names were snapped up by WAMUG first.

If the end result is that the membership vote to change the name, we already
have the domain secured. If the end result is that membership vote to retain
WAMUG, then the domain names will simply expire and not be renewed. It was
 just a precautionary thing.

Personally - please consider the change and vote for what you want.

 2. Constitution. I don't know where the 28 days has come from. Our
 constitution reads:

  5.3 Notice of General Meetings
At least twenty one days notice of every Annual General Meeting or fourteen
days for every Special General Meeting shall be given to Members specifying
the place, the date and the hour of the Meeting and the general nature of any
special business, but the non-receipt of such notice by any Member shall not
invalidate the proceedings at any General Meeting.

The Associations Incorporation Act 1987 allows us to set the time period as
we see fit as long it is actually in the Rules (Constitution) which it is.
Other bodies may have 28 days but we don't. As you see, it is 21 days for the
AGM and only 14 days for a Special General meeting.

 Pete Smith

Once you've got them asking what it is, you then explain what WAMUG is, what

You have then got them intrigued enough to enquire about it, so you've

First off, I'm assuming that appleuserswa.org.au would be the new website

registered already, which I then discovered was by WAMUG. Just curious why
this was registered when it has not been agreed on as yet?

Secondly, Merv mentioned the other day that the Special Meeting requires a
28 day notice, so may not fall in time for the 2nd October. I'm assuming
this would then need to be the November meeting to keep in line with the

The Committee mention a marketing push in the original post. Has a
marketing push been tried currently with WAMUG as it stands to date?
Couldn't this be tried as another (much easier) way to try and recruit more

Hi Committee
There could be a problem with holding a Special Meeting on 2 October.
Check in our Constitution. Usually Special Meetings require a 28 day
notice with the item to be considered detailed in that notice.

 Hi Muggers,

As you know the WAMUG Committee is working hard to increase the availability
of our service to Apple users. A number of our recent meetings have included
well received hands on demonstrations in addition to the traditional segment
for problem solving and the sharing of ideas. Though we are a vibrant and
active group and have a particularly responsive, helpful mail list, the
Committee would like to instigate a marketing push to increase meeting
attendance, attract some new members, and get involved in community outreach.
A model that we can aspire to is that of the dynamic Apple-Q in Queensland. (
 http://www.apple-q.org.au )

This marketing will include a revamping of the web-site, printing of business
cards, and advertising in local publications and on local notice boards.
Before the marketing initiative begins a name change would greatly help with
public recognition of what our group does. The committee proposes that our
group of Apple enthusiasts be know as Apple Users WA. As opposed to WAMUG
which has to be explained to all on first hearing, Apple Users WA obviously
describes a group Apple product users.

We support the whole range of Apple products and services in addition to the
much loved, time honoured Mac. Newer products such as the iPod, iPhone, iPad
and Apple TV all contribute to the easily accessible Apple ecosystem that we
have come to rely upon. Rounding out the Apple combined ecosystem are
services that include iCloud, iTunes, iTunes U, iTunes Match, the App Store,
and the Mac App Store. It is now possible to own and iPhone and an iPad, and
with the use iCloud have an extremely versatile and functional setup. Younger
people in particular are often in a position where they do not even know what
a Mac is. Also Windows users are often wooed into the Apple fold by the
iPhone and iPad, but may initially not know the benefits of converting to an
iMac or a MacBook. We would like to help these sections of the community as
well as those who make use of the full range of Apple products.

Even though we long standing members are quite comfortable with, and likely
even quite attached to the WAMUG name, a name that better reflects our
activities and sounds more accessible will help us promote the use of the
Apple product range and provide a obvious support group for the growing
 collection of new Apple users.

So while aficionados principally do our work on a Mac, increasingly certain
specialised functions are better served by using newer Apple products and
services. The Committee proposes that we change the name to Apple Users WA to
 better reflect this.

This name change will require the passing of a motion at a Special Meeting of
WAMUG. We propose that the meeting of Tuesday 2 October be such a Special
Meeting. An email with details will follow shortly.

 Best Regards,
 WAMUG Committee

Given my query you would realise I am a beginner ins this area.
In WAMUG archives search for Drawing on iPad.
In that thread Carlo and Pat offered suggestions. I guess your choice
will depend on what you want to do with it. My motivation was to involve
my grandchildren in problem solving without worrying about making
mistakes. For note taking at a meeting I use Pages and a keyboard.

To fix this issue, you need to remove Notes Plus and re-install the

Please remember to backup your important data prior to re-install Notes

Hi Carlo and Pat.
I downloaded Carlo's suggestion before I received your email Pat so I
have been playing with Notes Plus and have sent a sample of my efforts
by email, directly from the app, to the son who gave me stylus. He rated
my writing as barely Year 4!!
I will also explore the suggestions you made Pat as I think my two

lot of enjoyment from these apps.
Thank you both for your great suggestions.

I also have a stylus, but unfortunately can't use it as there is a screen

Re: Transperth

2012-08-29 Thread Merv Bond
Hi Mac
I had no success with the maps.
However after going to the home page: http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/
I clicked on the button Bus Timetables, lower left of the page.
The table that comes up is not all that helpful but assuming I want to
travel in the Western Suburbs I took a stab and clicked on the timetable
for Western 41.
The resulting pdf gave the timetable for the route and a map.

If you did not know the Timetable Name nor the Service Nos then you
could use the Planner and that would give you these details to then go
through the procedure I have described above to obtain a timetable and a
map.

Perhaps one of our experienced commuter members would have a better
solution.
Happy journey.

I remember using it a long time ago and it did significantly reduce

ColorSync Utility.app From finder select the Go menu, and
 select Utilities.
In this folder you will find the ColorSync application.

 1. Open ColorSync.app
 2. Go to the File menu and select open. Find the pdf file you want
 to shrink and select it.
 3. You will see the first page of the pdf file in a 'preview
window', and at the bottom of the window you will find a drop down
menu with Filter by the side of it.
 4. Use the drop down menu to select Reduce File Size, and then
 click Apply.
 5. You can then close and save the document, which will now be a

 Hi Clive,

 Just adding to Carlo's comments.

Open the PDF in Preview and then save it (as a PDF) again; the
resulting file will usually be significantly smaller than the
original with no difference in quality.

Preview Save dialog includes, in the Quartz Filter pop-up menu, a
 Reduce File Size option.
However, this option uses compression, so it reduces the quality
of images and text in the resulting PDF.
If you simply re-save a PDF, without this option, no compression
 occurs.

How does this work if Preview isn’t actually compressing images?
The program is simply using OS X’s built-in PDF-processing
features to strip PDF files of all the unnecessary bits: preview
 images, metadata, and the like.
This feature is especially useful for PDFs created in Adobe
Illustrator and InDesign, which tend to be unnecessarily large
because of program-specific components and other non-vital data
these applications save inside each PDF.

 Ronni

 Hi Clive,

The effectiveness of compression of a PDF will vary wildly
depending on the content. Large PDF files normally contain a
large number of images or a few very large images. If you have
access to the source of the PDF you can choose to compress the

dramatically. You can also purchase tools which will compress the
images in a PDF even if you do not have the original source

3CXPhone

2012-05-08 Thread Merv Bond
Yesterday I installed the app 3CXPhone on my iPad 2. It is a free
download from the Apple Store. I found the terminology in the setup a
bit confusing but referring back to setting up my VoIP on my modem, and
talking to my Windows son, I got it going. Checked it over the internet
and local calls came through quite clearly. Same result when connected
to the net via G3.
My mobile phone runs through Optus so when we go bush I have to buy a
Telstra prepaid sim card. The sim card in my iPad is from Telstra so
perhaps my iPad will become my country mobile. Looking forward to trying
it out. Is anyone in the country using a phone app on iPad and if so
what is the quality of performance?
Merv
PS There is 3CX Tunnel app which I downloaded but didn't use. My simple
understanding of its function is that it helps in bypassing firewalls.
At the moment the phone works fine without it.

But yes, I'd be a bit cautious. The other thing would be if you'd see any
real world speed difference. The USB3 would only be running at USB2 speed
as that is what the Mac would expect, so it's not going to convert to
Firewire speeds, so I think you'd still be gaining USB2 speeds anyway. So no
 real improvement.
I could be wrong here, but I also had the impression there were differing
data versus power consumptions through both a USB and Firewire cable. (ie
one pulls through or expects more power and data then the other). So wouldn't
want to fry anything if there was. Again, I could be wrong there,...

Found this info as well, which may help with it...
 /quote
Firewire is isochronous, basically meaning that you can pump clocked data
though it in real time. USB works more like TCPIP, with the data chopped up
into packets and later reassembled. (Thus, at a minimum, you have latency,
that is, the wait for the data to be put back together.) Second, the
Firewire protocol allows more direct address to memory (including mass
storage) with minimal intervention of the CPU.
 /end quote

I can't lay my hands on the other info I thought I had and Siri can only do
 so much when driving,..lol ;)

whereas Firewire is a true peer-to-peer connection and required handshaking
signals back from the disk drive.

Thanks Ronni, Carlo and Bob.
From your responses I gather that having made a GUID Partition Table I

Have I got it right?

 Hi Merv,

 Just adding to Carlo’s reply.

In order to boot from an Intel based or PPC based Mac, you may need to change
 the partition map.
The bootable partition Map for PPC is (APM) Apple Partition Map which is
 Apples default.
The Intel based Macs require (GUID) “GUID Partition Table to be bootable.

Yes, you can have as many bootable partitions as will fit on your drive.
Format the partitions as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use Carbon Copy
Cloner or SuperDuper to make bootable copies

 Hi Merv,

I certainly have not heard that Rosetta is no longer included on the SL
Retail DVD; unless Apple have changed this and not let anyone know.

Rosetta and Quicktime 7 are both included on the Mac OS X 10.6 installation
DVD (that I purchased when SL was released), both are designated as
 'Optional Installs' by default.

Rosetta can be installed from the Optional Installs package installer
located in the Optional Installs folder on your Snow Leopard DVD.

Or if you don’t install it; just open any application which requires
Rosetta; you'll get a prompt to install it if it's not already present and
it will download and install (if you are connected to the Internet); if you
are not connected to the Internet, you would then require the Install Disc.

I just checked Apple Support site and they still have this:

 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/27987.html

If you need to install Rosetta:

To install Rosetta, follow one of the procedures below.

If your computer is connected to the Internet:

Click the Install button in the Rosetta dialog. Rosetta will be downloaded
 and installed for you.

If your computer is not connected to the Internet:

 1. Insert the Mac OS X installation disc that came with your computer or
your Mac OS X retail package.

 2. Double-click the Optional Installs folder, and then double-click the
 Optional Installs package.

A package has an icon that looks like an open box.

 3. Follow the onscreen instructions. Select the disk where you want to
 install Rosetta and click Continue.

 4. Select the checkbox next to Rosetta, click Continue, and then click
 Install.

All you need is a FW400 to FW800 cable, depending on the drive you buy it
 may even be thrown in.

When FW800 drives first came out, they tended to ship with both fw800
fw400 ports (the first I bought was like this) - but then they just started
shipping with fw800 ports and some suppliers threw in both fw800 cables and
fw800 to fw400 cables (that's what I got with my second fw800 drive).

Have any of you expressed your concerns by ringing the ICT Customer
Service Centre? Or written to the Department to say, the Deputy Director
General David Axworthy?
Safari and Firefox are recognised by most corporate bodies so I find it
amazing that the Department of Education and Training is not at the
forefront of communications and using these browsers.

 Inexcusable!

Perhaps the Department of Education needs to send someone on a course to
 learn about modern web technologies…

Even Microsoft themselves acknowledge that IE6 is an antiquated, insecure
 bug-ridden mess!

So very true Peter, I would not use the Internet if I had to use IE6.
Only last week I had quite a somewhat heated discussion with a High School
 Principal re just this issue.
Unfortunately the Education Department and their IT just Don't Get It!

If only this problem was confined to this particular issue, but we see it all
too frequently in what are generally government-base sites or those of large,
seemingly inflexible organisations such as standards authorities. Such
organisations, which by their nature should be accessible to as many users as
possible, tend to be precisely the opposite, causing those of us who support
users to go through numerous hoops just to make these horrible web pages
work. And it's not just their web sites...

As just one alarming example, I regularly receive, on behalf of a client, a
spreadsheet file containing report data from one of the largest health
insurance companies in the country (and yes, it's government-based - is that
enough clues? : ) ). This file, which always comes from the same contact,
is created in MS Excel 95! Perhaps we can look forward to the day when they
 upgrade to Windows 98...

I think Flux is an excellent application, at the top of the tree. For my
money, it is better in many ways than Dreamweaver, which for years has been
overpriced and bloated, and is still based on 20th century ideas. Flux
depends completely on CSS for its design techniques, and has full support
for all modern technologies, especially HTML5, jQuery, and many others. Like
Dreamweaver, it produces very clean code, and does not modify your original
 code.

The main caveat with Flux is that it is such a departure from more
conventional WYSIWYG Web Page designers that it does take quite a bit of
getting used to, but once you get used to it it becomes a pleasure to use.
Flux receives very regular updates from its developers, and is becoming
highly regarded in the development community, even though it doesn't seem to
get the same publicity that other software gets. I would definitely take
 advantage of the discount.

Introduction

I'm Matthew Drayton, CEO and lead developer here at Nolobe. It
has been a while since our last newsletter but we have big things
   planned for the year ahead.

New Year Savings - Interarchy 10 for $14.95
---

If you haven't purchased Interarchy 10 there's no time like the
present because for a limited time Interarchy is available $14.95.
That is half off the normal price of $29.95.

To purchase Interarchy 10 for $14.95 enter the coupon code
   HAPPYNEWYEAR2012 and save.

   http://nolobe.com/interarchy/buy?coupon=HAPPYNEWYEAR2012

If you already have Interarchy 10 thank you very much for your
past purchase. We would be honoured if you were to pass along the
coupon, and a good word, to your friends.

Plans for 2012
--

We had big plans for 2011 but like so much in life little went
according to plan. I suffered a major back injury which slowed
development on Interarchy somewhat. I'm hesitant to say I am back
to 100% but I feel much better and am looking forward to spending
a lot of time in front of Xcode.

2012 marks my 12th year of working on Interarchy and am very much
looking forward to showing you the next big update soon.
Additionally we also have a new app, tentatively called Paste,
which should be available next month.

As always the above information is subject to change but it should
give you an idea of what we are working on here at Nolobe and what
   our plans are moving forward.

Beta Testing

We are looking for beta testers. Anyone with an Interarchy 10
license and a Mac running OS X 10.7 or an iPhone or iPad running
iOS 5 is welcome to take part. If you are interested please send
an email to the following address along with the hardware UUIDs
for any devices you wish to test on.

Firefox and MacFamilyTree

2011-12-21 Thread Merv Bond
I use MacFamilyTree (MFT). One can export web pages from MFT to the HD
and view the pages with a browser. I have done this with Firefox for
earlier versions of MFT. However, as from version 6 of MFT the content
of the pages become transparently layered over each other. I can read
the web pages correctly with Safari but I prefer Firefox. I have gone
through the Firefox support and followed The websites look wrong
suggestions without success. As yet I have not created a web site on the
net so one can't view what I am experiencing. However, if some one is
using MFT I'd be pleased to know whether they are successfully viewing
the web pages from MFT with Firefox.

is: /Library-Printers-EPSON-InkjetPrinter-EPW-EPSON Printer Monitor.app

The printer is on my computer and shared with two other computers.

Intel iMac OS X 10.5.8
Multifunction Epson Stylus Office TX 600 FW

The problem is not fatal, but an irritation.

In your third suggestion I found a file titled

Copied and saved, including the pathway, then deleted the original.
Restarted.
Irritant gone!!

Printed a page. OK
Thank you for my Christmas present.

Hi Ruben
I am running 10.5.8 on an intel iMac.
If usr means user then using that path I don't reach a java file.
There are lots of jar files etc when I do a search. Also found a disk
image containing an update for JavaForMacOSX10.5Update10.dmg but it is
120.3 MB so can't send that.
Any other clues for locating the file?

 Hi Merv Ruben,

 /usr/lib/java is a hidden file.

 1. Go to the Menu bar, click on Go, then select Go to folder

 3. In the dialogue that opens, type usr/lib/java” (without the quotation
 marks).
This will reveal your hidden usr files.

I don’t know about issues/problems Ruben might create in his Lion OS X
10.7.2 installation if he installs the Leopard versions of Java.

To get EyeHome to work in Snow Leopard there was this solution, but no-one
AFAIK has got EyeHome working in Lion.
The EyeHome Software 8.1 was the last release in 2006. EyeHome has not been
 supported since then.

If Ruben wants the solution for getting EyeHome to work in Snow Leopard,
post back and I’ll include it.

 1. Download and Install the driver: USB(RT257X/RT2671/RT2500)

The Ralink Wireless Utility will open, in about 20 seconds it should
 detect the device: connected.
 3. You should also set up a profile in the utility.
  Just add and activate.

 4. Then open Network Prefs, Network Port Configurations, and Hit Apply.

Ronni, to do a test run on my iPad 2 I visited the first site that you

I printed a Pages document - fine.
Inserted a photograph in the Pages document and printed - fine.
Tried to print a photograph not in a document - timed out.

I next visited the teckrepublic site mentioned below.
Same experience except that with the photo I got an error message
Document type not supported. It was a jpg and the downloaded
application 'PrintCentralPro' listed jpgs as acceptable.

Has anyone had experience with either of these applications, or an
alternative, and successfully printed photos?

 Hi Merv,

I have never used this app or don’t know much about Filterstorm 3 other than
reading a few reviews and also about Filterstorm Pro.

 Exporting Images

To export images, go to the 'export' tab (iPad) or tap the bottom icon in the
main menu to bring up the export screen (iPhone), and tap on the destinations
in the list you wish to check them. At this point, tapping the Send Photos
button will begin processing and transferring all the selected photos to all
 the selected destinations.

The Delivery Settings button will bring up a popover giving you options to
scale all the images you're sending to fit into a certain pixel-sized box.
You can also set the maximum size here. If you don't need extremely high
resolution output, you can speed up the processing time by lowering the
maximum size. You can also choose the JPEG quality, higher means larger file
 sizes, smaller means worse quality.
Somewhere around 80% is usually a good compromise between the two. Finally
you can set the option to confirm these settings each time before export.”

Locations Services, Notifications, SIRI Apps like Weather app are all going

If you are worried about draining the battery, and don’t mind missing out on

I’m not sure if I posted this before to WAMUG, I know I did to GMUG.

Here Are 10 Ways To Improve Battery Life On The iPhone 4S:

 1. Location services in Settings Location Services and switch it to off for
apps where location services aren’t important.
Having all your apps use GPS will quickly drain your battery.

 2. Turn off Wi-Fi when you aren’t using it in Settings Wi-Fi and switch it

 3. Turn Off Bluetooth in Settings General Bluetooth.

4.Turn off push data in Settings Mail, Contacts, and Calendars Fetch New

Fetching data at longer intervals will give you some extra battery life. Even
more so if you do it manually.

Some apps, such as Facebook, have push notification settings in Setting

had the experience of touch screens on iPod or iPhone I guess the
symbols are obvious - thank you for explaining in plain English.

Tap a mailbox to see its messages. Unread messages have a blue dot

If you have more than one mail account, tap Mailboxes to switch between

If you haven't already downloaded it, I'd recommend getting iBooks from
the App Store (Free) then grabbing the iPad User Manual. It's very good,
plus it's on the device all the time.

 Help appreciated.

Re: csv file to iPad

2011-10-27 Thread Merv Bond
Hi Daniel
Imported Thunderbird's email addresses into Address Book on my computer
successfully. However, on connecting to iPad I couldn't find an Address
Book - am I correct in assuming I use the Contacts file. If so, I can't
see a ready way to sync it with my Address Book. No doubt it is senile
blindness, but guidance appreciated.

 Hi Merv

Import into the Address Book on the computer, then (assuming you're syncing
this already), sync the iPad via iTunes. Data will transfer across from the
Address Book on the computer to the iPad.
(If not already syncing the Address Book then once the iPad is plugged in, go
to the iPad (under Devices) then to the Info Tab and tick on Address Book.).

A note with .csv files. Just be wary with some of it, as they can need a
tidy up and some of the info doesn't always get read well. So pays to go
through and clean up the Address book after the csv import before syncing
 with iPad.

Also, make sure you've got a good backup of Address Book before you start.
(User folder - Library - Application Support - AddressBook is where all the
data is stored.). I normally make a copy of that onto a drive or desktop
 before I start. :))

 Easy :)

 Kind regards
 Daniel

No films or videos. Currently I cannot update Adobe flash and Addobe Air

We have a four year old Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 running Leopard; 1GB Memory.
 152 Gb space remaining.

Should we update to Snow Leopard/Lion or is it time to update the computer

Fwd: What's New in FMS 4.5

Toward the bottom of this FlashNewz.com email is an item about a meeting
of the Flash Media Server Users Group at which cross-platform matters
will be discussed including iOS. Having only just acquired an iPad I am
a babe in the woods on this topic but new adopters might find it of
interest.
