Have you tried opening the document in Numbers? Merv On 20/12/13 3:41 PM, Severin Crisp wrote: Thanks for the comments, Peter. Let me emphasise the problem again. 1. The document basically a table (Word .doc from 93 PC version) opens and displays correctly in my MS Office 2011, Word 14.3.9 2. When I print, on any of three printers, a few values, which are calculated within Word are incorrect, some are unaffected. Non calculated values are fine. 3. When I save as PDF from the print dialog corruption occurs as in printing 4. If I open the document in Acrobat 11, the same corruption occurs 5. Text Edit can not open the document sensibly 6. Preview opens and prints correctly, though the setting out is disturbed 7. If I save from Word as .rtf, then open and print from Text Edit, the numbers are fine but once again the setting out is disturbed. All in all, most annoying! The same thing happens when I save as PDF so I suspect a postscript mismatch is the culprit. Though it looks awful it saves as .rtf correctly. I have latest MS Office and it gets it wrong if I save as a .docx. Most annoying, comments please! A few ideas: 1. What happens if you open the file in something else that will read .doc files, eg, TextEdit or Open Office or any of its clones (NeoOffice, etc - assuming have any of the latter)? 2. Do you know the syntax of the calculations? Could you re-enter them into your onscreen document? A bit of a nuisance but it might work. 3. I'm also wondering if there isn't some reliance on a macro set up which isn't available to you Sorry I can't of more help. Re: Startup problem iMac power PC
Sorry for the delay in responding. Did as you suggested Ronni, but no change - including the vacuuming and the use of my puffer for removing dust from photos. A day or so later one of my sons, the only one immersed in Macs, called by and went through the procedures as well. He agreed with you Ronni, and Tim, that it was a capacitor problem. He had had a similar experience with one of his own iMacs, and although the capacitors had been replaced by an experienced technician, the problem did not go away. A new power box was the only solution. So, my wife is considering her options - will keep in touch - but don't hold your breathe. Incidentally, her machine has firewire 400 only. Using SuperDuper I had been making bootable backups to an external disk that only had 800firwire sockets. I used a cable adapted for this situation. I made one desperate attempt to install one of bootable copies back on the 'injured' iMac but it did not recognise the back-up. Maybe I did something wrong or was trying the impossible. If you haven't recently cleaned the dust from all of the intake and exhaust vents, I would suggest you do. Turn the iMac OFF and disconnect power cable anything attached to the iMac. Find the air vents, there is one along the top, one along the bottom, and in some models there is a circular one in back. Use a vacuum cleaner to get the worst off, then use compressed air to blow the rest out. Susan and Martin Thank you for exploring this topic with me. I did a search on consequences of jailbreaking an ipad and a telling one was: 'if you install new firmware updates released by Apple for the iPad, those updates will restore the iPad to a non-jailbroken state, removing any third-party apps or device customizations made while jailbroken.' For more see: http://www.ehow.com/info_8169902_jailbreaking-ipad-do.html I guess that if I get totally frustrated with phone messaging I'll purchase credits and use Skype. Thank you both for your help and advice. Merv On 6/04/13 9:57 AM, Martin Hill wrote: Just a small correction - WhatsApp does not work on the iPad (even in the USA store) due to WhatsApp's policy. However, at this stage, I believe that unfortunately the only way to get it working on the iPad is to jailbreak as Merv originally said. -Mart On 06/04/2013, at 8:25 AM, Susan Hastings susanhasti...@mac.com wrote: Facebook has a messaging section. It's the same as Apple's service in that you can only contact people using a setup that you both belong to. Tango, which you can use on a phone, not sure about an ipad also requires you to both be using that app. I don't know of any universal SMS service that is free. Things that work in the USA may not work here because we have different carriers with different approaches. If whatsapp is actually free it probably still requires you to sign up and give an email address. I would expect a huge avalanche of spam that may even get past your ISP providers anti spam services by signing on to such a service. After all, they have to pay for it somehow! Skype's paid service is an example of one where you pay (as you do when using SMS on your mobile phone) and it allows you to contact anyone. As its the same as using SMS on a mobile phone I would suggest that she consider it. Although their security may be flawed at times they are big enough to care is there is a public outcry, so would at least try to have good security. Trying to fill in some gaps in my family tree that I am creating with MacFamilyTree. My question is not about MacFamilyTree so is a bit off topic but is related. Has anyone used Just Answer as a search service for obtaining information about ancestors? If so, how do you rate their service in terms of satisfactorily answering your question(s) and the corresponding costs. Feedback appreciated. iPad:access mail attachments
I created a document in Pages and exported it as aWord document to a colleague for appraisal. He said he had sent it back with comments, the comments being linked to the appropriate point of insertion in the text. I received his response by email and took the email using my iPad 2 (iOS 5.1.1; Pages 1.7.1). I double clicked on the document image in his email and it opened in what I assumed (perhaps incorrectly), that the document was opened in Pages. No changes were visible !! I downloaded the email on my iMac, double clicked the attachment, and it opened in Pages with the changes clearly marked. Because the promo for Pages stated tracking was now part its attributes I assumed (not again!!), that the Pages document would show tracking. Is there an alternative way to access an attachment on iPad so that I know I am using pages, not an iOS text application, and perhaps see the recommended changes? Advice appreciated. Flash back 1999
No doubt some of you will remember this story circulating in 1999. Merv Bill Clinton, Bill Gates (the Microsoft King) and a priest were leaving from New York on a private jet on the eve of the new millenium. They were heading for Rome to celebrate the occasion with the Pope. Just before board a young man with long hair and a backback came up to the group and begged to be allowed to fly to Rome with them. The priest was very taken with the young man’s zeal to be in Rome for the 2000 commoration of the birth of Christ and convinced Clinton and Gates that it was OK to take him. The plane took off at 11.30pm on Dec 31, 1999. Just before midnight they were cruising at 35,000 feet. On the stroke of midnight the engines cut out. The pilot announced that the computers controlling the engines had shut down and consequently the engines. They would crash. The cabin steward announced that there were only three parachutes for the four passengers. Bill Clinton said he was the leader of the most powerful country in the world and so must survive. So saying he took a chute and jumped. Bill Gates said he was the most intelligent man in the world and must survive and jumped. The priest turned to the young man and said, “I am an old man and you are young and have everything to live for. You take the remaining chute.” The young man replied, “Not to worry Father. The most intelligent man in the world just jumped with my backpack.” -- The whole psychology of modern disquiet is linked with the sudden confrontation with space-time. Re: Eudora 6.2
Hi Daniel As you point out there are lots of changes happening in the background as servers are updated. Only when it interferes by making something malfunction on our computers do we become aware of these changes. Thanks for reminding us of the big picture. (or specific protocols for certain email clients). It may be the same where mail.m.iinet.net.au as outgoing and incoming mail servers still works now, even though their recommend setting is mail.iinet.net.au. One day if they upgrade or change servers again this setting may just stop! (the same could also be said for people that merged with iinet and have ozemail.com.au addresses from years ago. One day iinet may decide, hey we're now changing this and they will no longer be supported. Mail accounts (and internet connections) are spread over many different servers and computers and devices (or dial in boxes), and sometimes if you happen to get a specific one it lets you do one thing, and another one doesn't. (That's why sometimes you can have a great connection one day, then the next if it drops off and reconnects and you get another Server box it can be not so good. :o) Trying to be fairly generic with that,..and hopefully doesn't across too poorly, just offering some ideas of why it can be. :o) But the main thing it's all working. Oh, as an aside, something similar is slowly happening with Telstra/Bigpond clients. Telstra have decided at some point obviously they no longer want to house email. So they've (obviously) done some deal with Microsoft and a lot of clients emails are being palmed off from Telstra to Hotmail. (so the mail.bigpond.com incoming setting no longer works, and clients are finding they now have to use pop3.live.com - which is the incoming setting for Hotmail). The strange thing is that so many of Telstra clients don't appear to know this. (I must admit the first time I stumbled across it I was a bit unaware fully - vaguely knew but didn't sink in). And even though it's being done for a lot of people, I'm surprised that s it' s been poorly advised from Telstra, as so many don't' realise. not exactly the same as what yours was, but just to sort of tie in the changing of settings type principal. Re: Eudora 6.2
Hi Ronni You could be right that iiNet have always had the email address as User Name but that does not explain how for years, at least from 1996, the user name sufficed on my other two machines and until Monday of this week, on my wife's machine. Be that as it may, I am very pleased that operational status has been achieved. I hope it stays that way. All the best. I suspect that iiNet made some changes to their system overnight between 11.00 pm Sunday evening and 7.30 am Monday morning when my wife tried to access her email. That change required the full email address rather than just the User Name. I have two other machines running Eudora that would not access mail so I entered the full email address and Bingo! Blocked printer nozzle

Did a nozzle test and yellow did not show up. Cleaned and tested the heads twice but yellow refused to show. In the ink levels it is showing at 100% full. Took out the yellow cartridge _ went through the cartridge replacement procedure to do this_the cartridge showed some dampness so I assume the nozzle in the printer is blocked. Can this be fixed? Re: Blocked printer nozzle
Hi Ronni Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I am using genuine Epson cartridges. This time instead of using the utility application on my Mac I went to the Setup menu on the printer. It probably makes no difference but worth a try. Did a nozzle test. A hint of yellow appeared. Still within the Setup menu I then did a head clean. I was next going to do another nozzle check but the Magenta had run out. It had been low so I suppose the head cleaning episodes drained it. Replaced the Magenta and waited for the reload testing procedure. Did a nozzle check and all the colours appeared. I have a test page made up of four 25 mm squares, one colour to each square. Ran that and solid colour came out in each square. Success!! Thank you for the encouragement to have another go and for the additional tips should this happen in the future. Regards Merv On 20/11/12 11:36 AM, Ronni Brown wrote: Hi Merv, Are they genuine Epson Ink Cartridges? If so first try suggestions below. 1. Remove the cartridge and reinstall it. 2. Power cycle the printer, and then remove the cartridge and reinstall it. 3. If the cartridge heads are blocked then soak them in window cleaning solution or warm water and then clean with a soft cotton swab. 4. If the cartridge has ink and still the printer does not print then the circuit of the cartridge may have failed. If the printer still doesn’t recognise the ink cartridge, replace the ink cartridge with a New Retail cartridge. Try reinstalling and charging it a few more times. If all else fails you have a defective cartridge. It happens sometimes whereby for one reason or another the chip refuses to register, even in the Epson Brand. If this is the case, nothing short of exchanging the cartridge will solve your problem. Remove the cartridge and rub a soft tissue over the gold part (chip) of the cartridge. Then replace. Re: Apple: some food for thought
It is a common ploy to defend oneself by saying that everybody else is doing it. Throw in some adjectives such as silly, ridiculous and tall poppy syndrome to add to the mix. The issue of ethics in business is the sub-text of the article. At the more literal reading the author of the article was suggesting that a $35 adapter was a small amount for a company at the top of profit list in the world and would have been a gesture of goodwill to its devoted customers. Merv On 17/09/12 5:25 PM, Stephen Chape wrote: Well done Martin ! On 17/09/2012, at 2:31 PM, Martin Hill wrote: This is the reply I posted to the article below: I'm sorry, but complaining about a $35 adapter is frankly silly. Why don't you go complain about car manufacturers charging an atrocious $400 for a replacement key remote instead - a far more nefarious example of corporate greed than Apple's little adapter. NFC has been termed Not For Commerce because it has been dead in the water as it requires huge changes by retailers. Apple only supports these sorts of standards once they become widespread enough to be useful - witness the time Apple took introducing 3G and 4G in their devices - they waited until there was enough 3G and 4G coverage to be useful for consumers saving them the terrible battery life impact inherent with jumping in too soon on early chipsets. Likewise, the ACCC's crusade against Apple re 4G was ridiculous as the International Telecommunications Union classes Telstra's HSPA+ dual carrier NextG network as 4G even if Telstra doesn't advertise it as such locally. It gives up to 42mbps speeds which is far faster than Vivid Wireless's 4G WiMax network here in Australia which tops out at a pathetic 5mbps. In contrast, Apple's iPad 4G has demonstrated real-world speeds of 20mbps on NextG in Australia. Now you tell me who is putting one over the consumer in that context? @David, this continued witch-hunt against Apple over Chinese working conditions is unfortunately based on a lot of untruth exacerbated by the infamous Mike Daisy. For example the topic that started the media frenzy originally was the supposed suicide cluster at Foxconn, Apple's major Chinese assembler. The reality which still very few media outlets mention is that only 17 suicides were verified over a 5 year period. This may sound like a lot until you realise that if Foxconn had the same suicide rate as the rest of China, they would have had 1,320 suicides over that same timeframe out of their 1.2 million workers. Make no mistake about it, these sorts of complaints are nothing but tall-poppy syndrome and sour grapes On 17/09/2012, at 1:03 PM, Merv Bond m...@iinet.net.au wrote: http://www.eurekastreet.com.au/article.aspx?aeid=33211 Merv -- The whole psychology of modern disquiet is linked with the sudden confrontation with space-time. Merv On 17/09/12 8:52 PM, Martin Hill wrote: Merv, my apologies if I expressed myself a bit too strongly in my comment. I do in fact agree absolutely about the importance of ethical business practices but feel the examples given in the article were just so inaccurate as to damage the author's cause. I have been frustrated in recent years at the amount of unbalanced commentary in much of the media about things like this. The continual tendency to tear down those who do well that is such a feature of the Australian psyche is unfortunately all too evident on the Internet as well. In the case of Apple it almost seems to be an orchestrated campaign for many elements of the media to fixate on some manufactured negative issue with each product release and blow it out of all proportion. Examples include the lack of a keyboard on the original iPhone, the non-removable battery, the supposedly *hot* iPad which was cooler than most other tablets, the Aussie 4G issue and now this $35 adapter. Where was the outcry when Samsung changed their adapter from their 30-pin dock connector (which they copied from Apple) in the Galaxy S2 to the Galaxy S3 without a free adapter for S2 owners? What's wrong with buying a cheaper third party adapter than Apple's for the new iPhone 5 - they're already being advertised. Why should Apple give it away free? Apple already gives lots of free or cheap stuff out - far cheaper OS update prices than Microsoft, far cheaper app prices than desktop software, free iCloud services, the cheap cloud-hosted iTunes Match service even for pirated music, free iOS system updates, free Find My iPhone and Find my Friends apps, free Maps GPS navigation app, free iTunes Remote app, etc etc. How many gestures of goodwill does Apple have to make? What's the big deal about this adapter? What other company has stuck with the same adapter and port on their devices for a decade? Why is there no outcry over the ridiculous number of different USB port sizes and shapes out there that you have to buy different cables and adapters for each different device? Why did I have to pay $400 for a new remote key fob for my Landrover(). ;-( It is this unbalanced commentary that just gets my goat! -Mart On 17/09/2012, at 5:53 PM, Merv Bond m...@iinet.net.au wrote: It is a common ploy to defend oneself by saying that everybody else is doing it. Re: Proposed name change to Apple Users WA
1 Thank you Pete for clarifying the Special Meeting requirements. Unless specified otherwise in the Constitution (Rules) then the Act, as you say, prevails and 28 days apply. 2 As suggested by Ronni the legal use of the word Apple does need further exploration. 3 Has the 'no post unless you are a financial member' brought the issue of membership into a sharper focus, hence the campaign? 4 The tone of the third paragraph of the original mail-out on 10/9/12 sounded like the mission statement of a business rather than a self help community of Apple enthusiasts. Although we have some members who are professionals in IT, most of us are not. We try hard to help each other and people act on our advice at their peril. 5 As WAMUG the efforts of our more knowledgeable members and useful examples of things that worked for our less qualified members have earned us a reputation of providing high quality assistance both nationally and internationally. Re-badging would result in having to rebuild that reputation. 6 Personally I have no problem in saying I am a WAMUG (way mug), member and follow it by saying we are no mugs. 7 The Committee's efforts to reinvigorate membership and meeting attendance is commendable. However, we must do it keeping in mind that we are a self help community of Apple enthusiasts. Regards Merv On 12/09/12 11:40 PM, Pete Smith wrote: Hi Ronni and all other WAMUGGERS. I'd just like to address two points from a personal perspective to put your minds at ease. 1. Domain name. Knowing that the name change would invoke healthy public debate on a public forum and also knowing that there are people out there (not WAMUGGERS!!) who snap up possible domain names to hold out for 'ransom', so to speak, a couple of domain names were snapped up by WAMUG first. If the end result is that the membership vote to change the name, we already have the domain secured. If the end result is that membership vote to retain WAMUG, then the domain names will simply expire and not be renewed. It was just a precautionary thing. Personally - please consider the change and vote for what you want. 2. Constitution. I don't know where the 28 days has come from. Our constitution reads: 5.3 Notice of General Meetings At least twenty one days notice of every Annual General Meeting or fourteen days for every Special General Meeting shall be given to Members specifying the place, the date and the hour of the Meeting and the general nature of any special business, but the non-receipt of such notice by any Member shall not invalidate the proceedings at any General Meeting. The Associations Incorporation Act 1987 allows us to set the time period as we see fit as long it is actually in the Rules (Constitution) which it is. Other bodies may have 28 days but we don't. As you see, it is 21 days for the AGM and only 14 days for a Special General meeting. Regards, Pete Smith On 12/09/2012, at 17:15 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: OOPS ... I forgot another point I did hint at it my first post to the list. In the post from the Committee it was mentioned having to explain the WAMUG name. Once you've got them asking what it is, you then explain what WAMUG is, what it does (covering all Apple products) etc etc. You have then got them intrigued enough to enquire about it, so you've got them,... then you can sell them on the idea to come and see, come to a meeting or join the Mailing List. After doing a search of registered Domain Names, I noticed it was registered already, which I then discovered was by WAMUG. Just curious why this was registered when it has not been agreed on as yet? Secondly, Merv mentioned the other day that the Special Meeting requires a 28 day notice, so may not fall in time for the 2nd October. I'm assuming this would then need to be the November meeting to keep in line with the constitution. The Committee mention a marketing push in the original post. Re: Proposed name change to Apple Users WA
Hi Committee There could be a problem with holding a Special Meeting on 2 October. Check in our Constitution. Usually Special Meetings require a 28 day notice with the item to be considered detailed in that notice. Merv On 10/09/12 10:00 PM, wamug announce wrote: Hi Muggers, As you know the WAMUG Committee is working hard to increase the availability of our service to Apple users. A number of our recent meetings have included well received hands on demonstrations in addition to the traditional segment for problem solving and the sharing of ideas. Though we are a vibrant and active group and have a particularly responsive, helpful mail list, the Committee would like to instigate a marketing push to increase meeting attendance, attract some new members, and get involved in community outreach. A model that we can aspire to is that of the dynamic Apple-Q in Queensland. ( http://www.apple-q.org.au ) This marketing will include a revamping of the web-site, printing of business cards, and advertising in local publications and on local notice boards. Before the marketing initiative begins a name change would greatly help with public recognition of what our group does. The committee proposes that our group of Apple enthusiasts be know as Apple Users WA. As opposed to WAMUG which has to be explained to all on first hearing, Apple Users WA obviously describes a group Apple product users. We support the whole range of Apple products and services in addition to the much loved, time honoured Mac. Newer products such as the iPod, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV all contribute to the easily accessible Apple ecosystem that we have come to rely upon. Rounding out the Apple combined ecosystem are services that include iCloud, iTunes, iTunes U, iTunes Match, the App Store, and the Mac App Store. It is now possible to own and iPhone and an iPad, and with the use iCloud have an extremely versatile and functional setup. Younger people in particular are often in a position where they do not even know what a Mac is. Also Windows users are often wooed into the Apple fold by the iPhone and iPad, but may initially not know the benefits of converting to an iMac or a MacBook. We would like to help these sections of the community as well as those who make use of the full range of Apple products. Even though we long standing members are quite comfortable with, and likely even quite attached to the WAMUG name, a name that better reflects our activities and sounds more accessible will help us promote the use of the Apple product range and provide a obvious support group for the growing collection of new Apple users. So while aficionados principally do our work on a Mac, increasingly certain specialised functions are better served by using newer Apple products and services. The Committee proposes that we change the name to Apple Users WA to better reflect this. This name change will require the passing of a motion at a Special Meeting of WAMUG. We propose that the meeting of Tuesday 2 October be such a Special Meeting. An email with details will follow shortly. Best Regards, WAMUG Committee -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Hi Mac I had no success with the maps. However after going to the home page: http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/ I clicked on the button Bus Timetables, lower left of the page. The table that comes up is not all that helpful but assuming I want to travel in the Western Suburbs I took a stab and clicked on the timetable for Western 41. The resulting pdf gave the timetable for the route and a map. If you did not know the Timetable Name nor the Service Nos then you could use the Planner and that would give you these details to then go through the procedure I have described above to obtain a timetable and a map. In this folder you will find the ColorSync application. 1. Open ColorSync.app 2. Go to the File menu and select open. Find the pdf file you want to shrink and select it. 3. You will see the first page of the pdf file in a 'preview window', and at the bottom of the window you will find a drop down menu with Filter by the side of it. 4. Use the drop down menu to select Reduce File Size, and then click Apply. 5. You can then close and save the document, which will now be a smaller size. Open the PDF in Preview and then save it (as a PDF) again; the resulting file will usually be significantly smaller than the original with no difference in quality. Preview Save dialog includes, in the Quartz Filter pop-up menu, a Reduce File Size option. However, this option uses compression, so it reduces the quality of images and text in the resulting PDF. If you simply re-save a PDF, without this option, no compression occurs. How does this work if Preview isn’t actually compressing images? The program is simply using OS X’s built-in PDF-processing features to strip PDF files of all the unnecessary bits: preview images, metadata, and the like. This feature is especially useful for PDFs created in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, which tend to be unnecessarily large because of program-specific components and other non-vital data these applications save inside each PDF. You can also purchase tools which will compress the images in a PDF even if you do not have the original source document. 3CXPhone
Yesterday I installed the app 3CXPhone on my iPad 2. It is a free download from the Apple Store. I found the terminology in the setup a bit confusing but referring back to setting up my VoIP on my modem, and talking to my Windows son, I got it going. Checked it over the internet and local calls came through quite clearly. Same result when connected to the net via G3. My mobile phone runs through Optus so when we go bush I have to buy a Telstra prepaid sim card. The sim card in my iPad is from Telstra so perhaps my iPad will become my country mobile. Looking forward to trying it out. Is anyone in the country using a phone app on iPad and if so what is the quality of performance? Merv PS There is 3CX Tunnel app which I downloaded but didn't use. My simple understanding of its function is that it helps in bypassing firewalls. At the moment the phone works fine without it. -- The whole psychology of modern disquiet is linked with the sudden confrontation with space-time. Thank you everyone for your responses. A dealer I spoke to suggested such a cable existed but they didn't have one in stock. So no real improvement. I could be wrong here, but I also had the impression there were differing data versus power consumptions through both a USB and Firewire cable. USB works more like TCPIP, with the data chopped up into packets and later reassembled. (Thus, at a minimum, you have latency, that is, the wait for the data to be put back together.) Second, the Firewire protocol allows more direct address to memory (including mass storage) with minimal intervention of the CPU. /end quote I can't lay my hands on the other info I thought I had and Siri can only do so much when driving,..lol ;) Kind regards Daniel Sent from my iPhone 4s --- Daniel Kerr MacWizardry Phone: 0414 795 960 Email:daniel AT macwizardry.com.au Web:http://www.macwizardry.com.au **For everything Macintosh** On 27/04/2012, at 8:46 AM, cm wrote: Hi Merv and Peter, I would be wary of those connectors. Portable HD Firewire 400
We have an iMac Power PC G5 running OS X 10.4.11. It has two Firewire ports, both 400. HD capacity approx 500 GB. I am searching for a like capacity portable HD with a firewire port but these days most of the devices are at least 1TB and only occasionally do they have a 400 port - obviously superseded. However, if I purchase a 1TB HD, with a 400 Firewire port, can I partition it so that half of the disk is a viable bootable HD for the G5? Your advice appreciated. Merv I think Flux is an excellent application, at the top of the tree. For my money, it is better in many ways than Dreamweaver, which for years has been overpriced and bloated, and is still based on 20th century ideas. Flux depends completely on CSS for its design techniques, and has full support for all modern technologies, especially HTML5, jQuery, and many others. Like Dreamweaver, it produces very clean code, and does not modify your original code. The main caveat with Flux is that it is such a departure from more conventional WYSIWYG Web Page designers that it does take quite a bit of getting used to, but once you get used to it it becomes a pleasure to use. Flux receives very regular updates from its developers, and is becoming highly regarded in the development community, even though it doesn't seem to get the same publicity that other software gets. I would definitely take advantage of the discount. I have done a couple of repair permissions and corresponding shut downs. The location of the original is: /Library-Printers-EPSON-InkjetPrinter-EPW-EPSON Printer Monitor.app The printer is on my computer and shared with two other computers. Re: Printer monitor spontaneously launches
Hi Ronni In your third suggestion I found a file titled com.epson.epw.agent.plist Copied and saved, including the pathway, then deleted the original. Restarted. Irritant gone!! Launched EPSON Scan. OK Printed a page. OK Thank you for my Christmas present. I hope your Blessings are many. Re: Help From 10.5.8 User
Hi Ruben I am running 10.5.8 on an intel iMac. If usr means user then using that path I don't reach a java file. There are lots of jar files etc when I do a search. Also found a disk image containing an update for JavaForMacOSX10.5Update10.dmg but it is 120.3 MB so can't send that. Any other clues for locating the file? Ronnie's instructions were completely correct. In my searching I did find the instructions for the SL fix but I couldn't find any information suggesting whether it would or wouldn't work for Lion so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm hoping the potential fix won't cause any issues since it only involves adding some files rather than replacing the one file that Lion has in that folder but I wouldn't dream of playing around like that without a backup. I have a time machine backup and also another bootable HDD in case anything ever goes wrong. Thanks Ruben Hi Merv Ruben, /usr/lib/java is a hidden file. 1. Go to the Menu bar, click on Go, then select Go to folder 3. In the dialogue that opens, type usr/lib/java” (without the quotation marks). This will reveal your hidden usr files. I don’t know about issues/problems Ruben might create in his Lion OS X 10.7.2 installation if he installs the Leopard versions of Java. To get EyeHome to work in Snow Leopard there was this solution, but no-one AFAIK has got EyeHome working in Lion. The EyeHome Software 8.1 was the last release in 2006. EyeHome has not been supported since then. If Ruben wants the solution for getting EyeHome to work in Snow Leopard, post back and I’ll include it. Re: operating system or new machine
A little more info please, Jennifer. What sort of Mac have you got? A power Mac or an intel Mac, a Mac mini ...? We use our computer mainly for word processing, email, iphotos, itunes (audio books and podcasting), ical diary and downloading information from the internet. My games are limited to solitaire and who knows, one day I may expand to scrabble and backgammon:-) No films or videos. Currently I cannot update Adobe flash and Addobe Air because our operating system does not support the new versions. We have a four year old Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 running Leopard; 1GB Memory. 152 Gb space remaining. Should we update to Snow Leopard/Lion or is it time to update the computer keeping in mind the relatively limited use and no iphone or ipad likely to be acquired? Fwd: What's New in FMS 4.5
Toward the bottom of this FlashNewz.com email is an item about a meeting of the Flash Media Server Users Group at which cross-platform matters will be discussed including iOS. Having only just acquired an iPad I am a babe in the woods on this topic but new adopters might find it of interest.
