Andy then asks Opie, “You want your suit to get soft?” I suppose horse
hairs were used in suits to keep their shape. That’s just a guess.

My wife and I recently moved to a new community and are living in an
apartment. On my way to taking out the trash this evening, I noticed a
postman walking nearby and delivering mail to apartment mailboxes. On my
way back to my apartment I noticed the postman dropping mail into my
building's mailboxes. I thought about asking him to just hand me my mail,
but then I thought about the experience that Barney and Andy had with their
postman. I knew from that episode that the mail must only be placed in an
authorized receptacle. "Put a mailsack on some people and it goes right to

To respond to Margaret’s question...my wife and I are in North Central Ohio
visiting family. My hometown has a population of 5,000 ppl and 4 stop lights.
It definitely has that “Mayberry feel” to it! As a matter of fact, the largest
classic car show in Ohio takes places tomorrow in my hometown! The Main Street
and the side streets will be lined with classic cars. There will also be an
antique sale going on, food vendors, a book sale at the library, the Lion’s
Club hosts a BBQ chicken lunch, and the American Legion hosts a breakfast.
I’ll be looking out for a Mayberry squad car...there’s usually at least one! I
just wish Ken Anderson was the driver behind the wheel!!

Thanks for that post Elizabeth! NW Georgia is not too far from me in E TN!
Speaking of remembering Mayberry, my wife and I travelled to Ohio to visit my
daughter at her college over the weekend. We stayed in a small town called
Yellow Springs. Just outside of Yellow Springs on Rt. 68 is a Marathon gas
station that had a sign that read, “Mayberry’s” above the front door. We didn’t
stop in, but really liked seeing that sign. It’s a “sign” that Mayberry is
appreciated in southern Ohio.

Front Porches

2018-04-04 Thread Brian Kaufman
I really enjoyed reading Ken’s article about front porches. The article took me
back to my own front porch during my high school days. We had a large front
porch on the front of our farm house in north central Ohio. I have lots of
memories of being on or around that porch...mostly of graduations, proms &
weddings. We also had a large patio behind the house where we did our snapping
of beans, husking ears of corn, etc..
Tonight I’m watching the episode, “Opie’s Rival” from Season 3...it’s
coincidental that I was watching that episode while I was reading Ken’s
article. The episode includes a very heartfelt segment on Andy’s front porch
where Andy explains to Opie about their strong relationship.

Allan Thank You

2017-10-19 Thread Brian Kaufman
Allan,

Thank you so much for managing the WBMUTBB Digest. It is a joy to read and
provide occasional submissions. Hopefully in the not-to-distant future I
can meet you at Mayberry Days. I suggested to my wife that we could
celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary in 2018 at Mayberry Days...I'm still
waiting on her reply and I mentioned it last week. ☺ She's not near the
TAGS fan that I am.

A TAGS Smile: I recently watched the episode where Barney refers to the
Mayberry jail as "The Rock". Watching Gomer's expression while Barney is
instructing the inmates about the rules at The Rock is hilarious and ALWAYS
makes me laugh and smile...like most anything that Barney says, or does.
It's also a joy to watch Andy capture the inmates and then credit Barney
for coming up with the idea of dropping the light bulbs off the courthouse
roof to simulate the sound of machine guns. Barney goes from feeling VERY
BAD about himself, to "cloud nine" after Andy gives him the credit for the
capture.

I hope all is well with my fellow WBMUTBB subscribers. Congrats to Ken and
his wife on another successful parade season. I can't even imagine keeping
that kind of schedule after my retirement, but when you're doing something
you absolutely love, I guess that makes it much easier. Thanks for
spreading good news and good cheer to everyone you meet, Ken.

Two Actors-One Character

2017-04-26 Thread Brian Kaufman
Thanks to all who corrected my error. I rushed my response and didn't think
about the Mayberry mayor being two separate characters. One position I
guess...but two separate named characters for the position.

Barney's Ingenuity

2017-04-19 Thread Brian Kaufman
While watching episode 27 of Season 4, Fun Girls', Barney displays even more of
his ingenuity. While working on the inventory, Barney tells Andy how he repairs
Otis' blankets by knitting them. He also tells Andy how he was going to crochet
him an afghan for Christmas. Later Barney shows Andy the desk lamp he
repaired.
Too bad Barney left town for the 'Big City', he could have had a second career
in Emmitt's Fix-It Shop.

Camera Use in Mayberry

2017-04-19 Thread Brian Kaufman
The very first episode that came to my mind was the Filling Station Robbery
episode where Barney is employing his High Speed Surveillance and
Reconnoissance to identify the robber stealing all of Wally's tools, parts,
etc... Of course, Barney failed to realize he took a picture of himself when he
was demonstrating to Gomer how the contraption would work. I will have to say
that Barney displayed lots of ingenuity in that episode.

Barney: The camera doesn't lie; it knows all, tells all..here is your criminal!
Why, it's me!
Gomer: You take a real good picture Barney. Me, I never do. :-)

Larry's Christmas Memory

2016-12-27 Thread Brian Kaufman
Larry,
Thank you so much for sharing your memories.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading
about your childhood experiences around Christmas.  My family and I were
fortunate to live in Germany for 3 years, but we never made it to Oberndorf,
Austria, where Stille Nacht (Silent Night)  was written.  I guess we now have
another reason to go back and tour Europe.
Thanks again for sharing great memories and Happy New Year!

Growing Up in a Different Time and Place

2016-12-24 Thread Brian Kaufman
Growing Up in a Different Time and Place
Like Ken, growing up for me holds very fond memories.  I also remember ice
skating on a small local pond when I was a child.  People from all around my
small town would gather during the winter and ice skate on the pond.  I could
not skate on ice skates, but I made a very good attempt at skating wearing my
cowboy boots.  Christmas was always a very special time of year for me and my
family of six children.  On Christmas Eve we would gather at a relative's home
for good and fellowship.  After a few hours Santa Claus would arrive and greet
all the children.  Santa Claus was typically played by a friend of my father
who arranged for Santa's arrival.  We would then go home, very excited for
Christmas morning to arrive.  Christmas Day was spent opening our presents
under the tree and later enjoying a large Christmas dinner at another
relative's home; typically my dad's side of the family in the afternoon and my
mom's side of the family in the evening.  Not sure how my dad did it, but with
six children, our living room floor was always filled with presents on
Christmas morning.  We were not rich by any means, but always had what we
needed and a little bit more on Christmas morning.

Barney Runs for Sheriff

2016-12-19 Thread Brian Kaufman
Today I watched an episode from Season 5, Barney Runs for Sheriff.  In that
episode Andy is contemplating taking an executive job offer from his friend Ed
Crumbpacker.  I find it very odd that Andy does not file a petition to run for
Sheriff before he is offered the executive job from his friend.  It seems that
Andy was "putting the cart before the horse".  Andy could have easily withdrawn
his petition, if he was indeed offered the executive job.  For Andy to assume
he had the job and not to complete a petition for Sheriff was really strange
considering Andy is normally very analytical when it comes to decision making.

I hope all our WBMUTBB subscribers have a very Merry Christmas and a joyous and
prosperous New Year!

I loved Gloria's answer to the question of what were Barney's middle names.  I

2016-10-23 Thread Brian Kaufman
I was attending a local college Homecoming parade yesterday when I had a
perfect opportunity to infuse a quote from Barney.  The Homecoming parade was
very well attended and traffic (pedestrian and vehicular) was quite heavy
afterwards.  Many of the pedestrians were standing in the street after the
parade, so the vehicle traffic could not proceed.  I told a person working on
the security staff that we just need to tell the people what Barney Fife would
tell them..."Okay everybody!  Cease and disperse!"  We both had a good laugh
afterwards.

Odors in Mayberry

2016-10-12 Thread Brian Kaufman
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this one, but how about the natural gas smell
coming from the broken heater in the courthouse that Gomer was attempting to
fix when he faints from the fumes.  Luckily Andy came in and saved Gomer's
life, which leads to countless "good-deeds" being done by Gomer to thank Andy

I'll bet the old Rimshaw house had some "very interesting" smells...especially

Animals on TAGS

2016-10-12 Thread Brian Kaufman
I am a little behind in answering this question about animals on TAGS, but I
was watching the Cave Rescue episode this evening and heard Barney mention two.
First was his mention of bats to Thelma Lou and how bats can lay eggs in your
hair and make you go crazy.  Barney then mentions that moths can do the same
thing.  I believe someone else responded with bats, but I'm not sure if anyone
mentioned moths.

Barney and the Choir

2016-05-25 Thread Brian Kaufman
One of my all-time TAGS favorite episodes is Barney and the Choir.  In my
opinion, it's one of the funniest episodes on TAGS.  It's also filled with
great music, as long as Barney is using the "very sensitive" microphone that
Andy provided him.  I also think one of the prettiest ladies I have ever seen
on TAGS is in that episode.  She is a blonde haired lady who stands to the
right of Thelma Lou when the choir is practicing and performing.  Does anyone
know who that actor is and what other shows or movies she may have performed in?

Dog Viewer of TAGS

2016-05-12 Thread Brian Kaufman
I have a confession...I understand that most of us who absolutely love TAGS
enjoy showing TAGS to grandchildren, friends, family, neighbors, etc... hoping
that others will also have the same appreciation that we all do for one of the
greatest shows ever produced for television.  Here's my confession...I come
home each day for a quick lunch and to walk my dog so she can do her
"business".  When my dog and I return to the house, I turn on Netflix and start
a TAGS episode after I put my dog in her crate.  I position her crate directly
in front of the TV before I head back to work, so she won't miss a single
minute of the episode.  I don't believe she has seen the episode "Dogs, Dogs,
Dogs", but I have a feeling that will be her favorite.
We love to share TAGS with our human friends, but how many TAGS fans can say
they are hoping their dogs gain an appreciation of TAGS!?  :-)

Ken Anderson's Squad Car

2016-05-06 Thread Brian Kaufman
Wow!  That is a great picture of Andy, Barney and Opie in Ken's squad car rear
window!  If you haven't gone to Ken's web-site, themayberryguru.com, I
encourage you to do so.  Besides the picture of Andy, Barney, and Opie, there
are many other great pictures to see.  It is obvious that Ken is keeping the
villages around Wisconsin much safer.   However, I'm not sure it was necessary
to give the man in the wheelchair a speeding ticket.  I believe there was a
small upgrade in the road and the man was just trying to get a good start
before he came to the upgrade.  Remember on TAGS when Andy thought
Ken...uhh...I mean Barney shouldn't ticket the truck drivers for speeding
before they got to Turner's Grade?  There was apparently a long-standing
agreement that the truck drivers needed that extra 5MPH to get over Turner's
Grade.  I believe that man in the wheelchair should have appealed his citation
to the Justice of the Peace and argued that he needed that extra speed to get
over the upgrade in the road.

In all seriousness...thank you for what you do Ken.  You're truly an
inspiration to TAGS fans everywhere.

Aunt Bees Badge

2015-12-26 Thread Brian Kaufman
Debbie,
I have also noticed that Aunt Bee's badge does not look like her outfit.  I was
watching that episode yesterday when CBS was airing the special.  It was really
interesting to see the black and white episode shown in color.  I also noticed
that the calendar on the wall to the left of Andy's desk did not have a snow
scene pictured, even though the episode supposedly takes place very near
Christmas.  I would have guessed that since the calendar month should have been
December, there would have been a winter landscape scene pictured.  It's
interesting what you can notice when observing the show closely.
I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas yesterday.  It was a very
interesting one here in East Tennessee with the rain and thunderstorms and a
high temperature of 73 degrees.  I'm not sure I have ever experienced weather
like that on Christmas Day.

There was a fire recently to a old brick building built in 1897.  The building

After church this past Sunday, my wife and I decided to have brunch at IHOP.
When the waitress came over to take our order I took the opportunity to create

that hungry and proceeded to order two eggs over easy, 2 bacon strips, 2
sausage links, hash browns, a croissant with black berry topping and creme
filling, and a black coffee.  Our waitress made a comment about me not being

I think Janine's (Aunt Bee of Orlando's) idea for a Mayberry theme park is a
great one!  I would definitely take the family to it...very often, probably.
Weaver's Dept. Store would be a great place to display and sell the TAGS
memorabilia.  We could all head to Wally's for a Nectarine Crush, or any
flavored soda of your choosing.  Perhaps it could have a classic car ride where
all the cars on the ride were seen on TAGS, especially the squad car.  Of
course, I'm sure that the park's replica squad car would not be near as nice as
Ken's.

Great idea Janine!

TV Land Shows

2014-07-30 Thread Brian Kaufman
Lucille,

I agree with you about what is being shown on TV today.  Most of it has nothing
to do with moral character.  Quite the opposite; most of the shows seem to
focus on immoral character.  However, I think the blame lies first with the
family breakdown.  I am a high school teacher and I'm shocked about the high
number of students who come from broken homes.  A minority number of my
incoming freshman students will reside with both of their parents.  That
doesn't mean that a single parent, or grandparents cannot be good parents, but
it is more difficult.  If parents monitored what their children were watching
and knew how to say, No, this country would be much better off and teachers
could focus more time on teaching.

said that he couldn't hand Andy the mail because “you’re
not an authorized receptacle”.  Barney
later says, “Put a mailsack on some people and it goes right to their heads!”.

Alan Jackson's Version

2013-09-07 Thread Brian Kaufman
Harriet,

Thank you for sharing that video of Alan Jackson.singing the Dillard's song
There is a Time.  I thought Alan and his group performed the song well, but I
prefer The Dillard's verson of the song, or should I say, The Dillard's and
Maggie Peterson's version of the song from TAGS.  It is a quiet and reverent
song, and as Andy so fittingly described the performance, I believe that is
the prettiest song I ever heard.

Thanks again Harriet!

Gasoline Sale Iin Mayberry

2013-08-08 Thread Brian Kaufman

Ken brings up a great point for discussion.  I have never actually thought
about how Wally's was the only game in town.  Perhaps the proximity to
Floyd's Barber Shop, The Diner, Fred's Drugstore, the courthouse, the Mayberry
Cinema, Mr. Goss's drycleaning store, and Mr. Foley's butcher shop made it so
convenient that people did not have to drive.  Afterall, remember Aunt Bee and
Opie taking their specially priced frozen beef to Mr. Foley's butcher shop via
wagon when the Taylor's freezer broke-down?  Just a thought...

Ken's Learn a Month Submissions

2013-07-22 Thread Brian Kaufman
Just wanted to publicly thank Ken for his submissions from his Learn A Month
magazine.  I have shared the animal facts with my family and they have really
enjoyed them.  I'm not sure I want to share the insomnia cures, though.  :-)
To Dan...do NOT try Ken's cures.  For some reason, I think he just may be
steering you wrong here.  My wife uses Valarian Root, a natural remedy that
seems to work well for her.

Thanks for the laughs Ken!

Ntt Airy and Mayberry

2013-06-25 Thread Brian Kaufman
I am a high school teacher teaching Life Skills to JROTC students.  I have used
clips from The Andy Griffith Show to emphasize a point regarding honesty,
integrity, patience, effective communication, etc...Most of the students love
the show and easily understand the point I am trying to make.  I am basically
teaching biblical principles without using the Bible.  I can't think of a
better way to do that than our beloved TAGS.

Tony Awards Memoriam Segment

2013-06-12 Thread Brian Kaufman

I also saw the Tony Awards show and really appreciated the applause that Andy
received during the In Memoriam section of the show.  I have never really
watched the Tony's before, but I must say, it is by far the best awards show I
have seen on TV.  Of course, the appreciation for Andy made it better, but it
truly was a better awards show than any other I have seen.

Squad Car License Plate Number

2013-05-23 Thread Brian Kaufman
Well, I again attempted to order a specialized plate here in Tennessee (Blount
County).  Thanks to Ken Anderson, I realized that the squad car plate number I
ordered last year was not the correct license plate number.  The actual license
plate number used on Andy and Barney's squad car was JL 327.  Unfortunately,
the state did not approve that plate number for my car.  I imagine some other
TAGS fan in my county already has it.  I did get the 327 part of the number,
but I had to use other letters instead of JL.  I picked the first name initial
of each of my children for the letters,  When you think of the family values
that TAGS teaches, I guess using my children's initials was appropriate.

Thanks Ken!

Mayberry Food List

2013-05-15 Thread Brian Kaufman
Remember when Barney and Gomer are on the roof of the courthouse and Barney
says, Something is going on, I can just smell it!  Gomer replies, Oh!
That's just the diner.  They have corn beef and cabbage on Tuesdays.  So, corn
beef and cabbage is my addition to the Mayberry Food List.

Filling Station Robbery

2013-04-30 Thread Brian Kaufman
Just finished watching the Filling Station Robbery episode that Holland
supplied the web-link for.  I believe Barney needed a screwdriver to remove the
camera from the shelf.  Barney probably had the camera secured on the shelf
somehow, so it wouldn't fall when the shutter was released.  Barney then needed
the screwdriver to un-fasten the camera from the shelf.

Ken's Jokes

I may be a lone wolf here, but I think Ken's jokes are pretty clever and

Shady Character Vote

2013-04-18 Thread Brian Kaufman
First of all, thanks to Ken for his post.  Ken always seems to come up with
very interesting ways to analyze TAGS episodes.

My vote goes to Gentleman Dan Caldwell.  Gentleman Dan receives my vote due to
his very deceptive personality and because he pulled a gun on Aunt Bee and Opie.

Andy's Homeplace

2013-03-22 Thread Brian Kaufman
Like many of you, I too was disappointed that Andy's home-place would not be
turned into a museum.  But, after some considerable thought, it made perfect
sense to not transform his home into a museum.  Cindi knows exactly what Andy
would have wanted.  Afterall, I believe she probably knew him better than any
one of us.  In addition, Andy was indeed a private person.  He also seemed to
be a person who was very considerate of others, and preferred to not live in
the limelight.  With this is mind, it makes perfect sense that his home-place
would be torn down instead of being transformed into a museum.

Our fond memories of Andy can best be enjoyed by watching TAGS and other shows
and movies he participated in.  One day, when our time on Earth has ended, we
will all be able to live eternally with Andy in God's heavenly home-place.

Squad Car License Plate Number

2013-02-03 Thread Brian Kaufman
Last year I ordered a license plate for my car that I thought contained the
three numbers from Andy and Barney's squad car.  The numbers I used were 283.
I am certain that I saw those numbers from the squad car license plate on an
episode.  However, while I was watching the TAGS episode The English Valet
recently, I discovered very clearly that the squad car license plate contained
the number 327.  Were there a variety of license plate numbers used on the
squad car license plate throughout the seasons of TAGS?  I imagine Ken would be
able to provide details regarding my question.

Janet...I really enjoyed reading your post about a TAGS reality show.  That was
very enjoyable to read.  Thank you.

Andy's Uniform Trivia

I just watched a TAGS episode this evening where Andy was adorned in his FULL

but Andy rarely did.  Please submit a reply to see if you can guess which

Visit to Mt Airy

2008-07-14 Thread Brian Kaufman
My wife and I are going to visit Mt Airy in September (before the Mayberry
Days Festival) and will be staying a night at Andy Griffith's birthplace.  We
know we want to have lunch at the Snappy Lunch Cafe, but does anyone have a
list of things we don't want to miss seeing from Mayberry.
Thank you.
