Postal Worker
My wife and I recently moved to a new community and are living in an apartment. On my way to taking out the trash this evening, I noticed a postman walking nearby and delivering mail to apartment mailboxes. On my way back to my apartment I noticed the postman dropping mail into my building's mailboxes. I thought about asking him to just hand me my mail, but then I thought about the experience that Barney and Andy had with their postman. I knew from that episode that the mail must only be placed in an authorized receptacle. There will also be an antique sale going on, food vendors, a book sale at the library, the Lion’s Club hosts a BBQ chicken lunch, and the American Legion hosts a breakfast. Growing Up in a Different Time and Place
Growing Up in a Different Time and Place Like Ken, growing up for me holds very fond memories. I also remember ice skating on a small local pond when I was a child. People from all around my small town would gather during the winter and ice skate on the pond. I could not skate on ice skates, but I made a very good attempt at skating wearing my cowboy boots. Christmas was always a very special time of year for me and my family of six children. On Christmas Eve we would gather at a relative's home for good and fellowship. After a few hours Santa Claus would arrive and greet all the children. Santa Claus was typically played by a friend of my father who arranged for Santa's arrival. We would then go home, very excited for Christmas morning to arrive. Christmas Day was spent opening our presents under the tree and later enjoying a large Christmas dinner at another relative's home; typically my dad's side of the family in the afternoon and my mom's side of the family in the evening. Not sure how my dad did it, but with six children, our living room floor was always filled with presents on Christmas morning. We were not rich by any means, but always had what we needed and a little bit more on Christmas morning. Barney Runs for Sheriff
Today I watched an episode from Season 5, Barney Runs for Sheriff. In that episode Andy is contemplating taking an executive job offer from his friend Ed Crumbpacker. I find it very odd that Andy does not file a petition to run for Sheriff before he is offered the executive job from his friend. It seems that Andy was "putting the cart before the horse". Andy could have easily withdrawn his petition, if he was indeed offered the executive job. For Andy to assume he had the job and not to complete a petition for Sheriff was really strange considering Andy is normally very analytical when it comes to decision making. I need to add to Ken's comments about his upcoming TV appearance and his magazine story. Ken wrote, "Mayberry is very much alive and well here in Wisconsin." I feel the need to correct Ken's statement. Ken should have written, "Mayberry is very much alive and well here in Wisconsin AND soon to be alive and well across the entire country." Barney and the Choir
One of my all-time TAGS favorite episodes is Barney and the Choir. In my opinion, it's one of the funniest episodes on TAGS. It's also filled with great music, as long as Barney is using the "very sensitive" microphone that Andy provided him. I also think one of the prettiest ladies I have ever seen on TAGS is in that episode. She is a blonde haired lady who stands to the right of Thelma Lou when the choir is practicing and performing. Does anyone know who that actor is and what other shows or movies she may have performed in? Brian KaufmanTAGS Fan of the Smokeys ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Dog Viewer of TAGS
I have a confession...I understand that most of us who absolutely love TAGS enjoy showing TAGS to grandchildren, friends, family, neighbors, etc... hoping that others will also have the same appreciation that we all do for one of the greatest shows ever produced for television. Here's my confession...I come home each day for a quick lunch and to walk my dog so she can do her "business". When my dog and I return to the house, I turn on Netflix and start a TAGS episode after I put my dog in her crate. I position her crate directly in front of the TV before I head back to work, so she won't miss a single minute of the episode. I don't believe she has seen the episode "Dogs, Dogs, Dogs", but I have a feeling that will be her favorite. We love to share TAGS with our human friends, but how many TAGS fans can say they are hoping their dogs gain an appreciation of TAGS!? :-) Have a great weekend TAGS Fans and keep the posts coming. Ken Anderson's Squad Car
Wow! That is a great picture of Andy, Barney and Opie in Ken's squad car rear window! If you haven't gone to Ken's web-site, themayberryguru.com, I encourage you to do so. Besides the picture of Andy, Barney, and Opie, there are many other great pictures to see. It is obvious that Ken is keeping the villages around Wisconsin much safer. However, I'm not sure it was necessary to give the man in the wheelchair a speeding ticket. I believe there was a small upgrade in the road and the man was just trying to get a good start before he came to the upgrade. Remember on TAGS when Andy thought Ken...uhh...I mean Barney shouldn't ticket the truck drivers for speeding before they got to Turner's Grade? There was apparently a long-standing agreement that the truck drivers needed that extra 5MPH to get over Turner's Grade. I believe that man in the wheelchair should have appealed his citation to the Justice of the Peace and argued that he needed that extra speed to get over the upgrade in the road. In all seriousness...thank you for what you do Ken. You're truly an inspiration to TAGS fans everywhere. Dan Goodwin's Comments
I guess I didn't think much about it when I responded with my least favorite episode being any episode without Barney, but Dan Goodwin brings up a great point. Our focus should be on discussing all the positive aspects of TAGS (which are almost endless) and the various nuances that made for such an amazing show. Aunt Bees Badge
Debbie, I have also noticed that Aunt Bee's badge does not look like her outfit. I was watching that episode yesterday when CBS was airing the special. It was really interesting to see the black and white episode shown in color. I also noticed that the calendar on the wall to the left of Andy's desk did not have a snow scene pictured, even though the episode supposedly takes place very near Christmas. I would have guessed that since the calendar month should have been December, there would have been a winter landscape scene pictured. It's interesting what you can notice when observing the show closely. I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas yesterday. It was a very interesting one here in East Tennessee with the rain and thunderstorms and a high temperature of 73 degrees. I'm not sure I have ever experienced weather like that on Christmas Day. Mayberry Moment
There was a fire recently to a old brick building built in 1897. The building is part of a quaint and historic downtown area in Nelsonville, Ohio where my family and I lived for 3 years. This is a quote from an article about rebuilding the old structure...Ms. Oakley is hoping that any new construction reflects the town's heritage. “Glass and steel just wouldn't seem like Mayberry,” she said. Mayberry Moment
After church this past Sunday, my wife and I decided to have brunch at IHOP. When the waitress came over to take our order I took the opportunity to create a Mayberry Moment. In true Barney Fife fashion I claimed that I really wasn't that hungry and proceeded to order two eggs over easy, 2 bacon strips, 2 sausage links, hash browns, a croissant with black berry topping and creme filling, and a black coffee. Our waitress made a comment about me not being hungry and laughed. I don't believe she knew that it was a Mayberry Moment, but at least I made her laugh. There are two quotes that I really enjoy and that still make me smile. The quotes are from the episode, Opie the Birdman. Opie had nursed the birds Winkin, Blinkin, and Nod until they were ready to fly on their own. Andy and Opie determine that it is time to release the birds from their cage. TV Land Shows
Lucille, I agree with you about what is being shown on TV today. Most of it has nothing to do with moral character. Quite the opposite; most of the shows seem to focus on immoral character. However, I think the blame lies first with the family breakdown. I am a high school teacher and I'm shocked about the high number of students who come from broken homes. A minority number of my incoming freshman students will reside with both of their parents. That doesn't mean that a single parent, or grandparents cannot be good parents, but it is more difficult. If parents monitored what their children were watching and knew how to say, No, this country would be much better off and teachers could focus more time on teaching.
