continuity supervisor
Hi Joe, Regarding script continuity, I believe that the responsibility may be for the continuity within each story, rather than across story arcs. The person in charge of that makes sure that certain shots have consistent features and are tied together with the rest of the story. One of the many examples of what the person does might be this: with the single camera technique, there is the possibility for props to become altered between each shot, and so the person makes sure that these props are consistent. Sometimes this responsibility may also be in the propmaster's bailywick. We've all seen examples of when little slips occur. For example, Barney's famous hair change during the recitation of the Preamble of the Constitution, shows that his hair was one way during one shot, and quite different during another shot. Makeup may also be in charge of this, along with the director. Also, the continuity supervisor makes sure that word usage is consistent in the script, etc. It seems that, with different productions, the role of script continuity supervisor changes somewhat. Night Shoots and Dialog Additions
Hey Joe, I always thought it was due to the technology, as you said. Maybe the film couldn't handle it, or it would prove too expensive to light the set adequately. Another thing along those lines you mentioned, is that some shows would shoot without location sound. So, if the Andy Griffith show was shooting at the 40 Acres lot, it's conceivable that they may have shot without sound and added dialog later. The Avengers (British 60s show) was, in its early 60s era, shot without sound on location shoots. There's one scene that comes to mind on TAGS. Barney has been stood up by Thelma Lou (and Gomer). Andy finds him at the courthouse, all dressed up with a bag of fudge. Together, they go out and check the doors, Barney sharing the fudge with Andy. There are a couple of lines that Barney says while he has his mouth full of fudge, outside. That makes me wonder if some of that dialog was added later. Radio Gunsmoke - Floyd and Mayor Stoner
Speaking of Gunsmoke, on the radio version of Gunsmoke, which aired from 1952-1961, our very own barber, Howard McNear, portrayed Doc Adams alongside William Conrad's Matt and Parley Baer's Chester. Now that makes ya thank. Was Mayberry really Dodge City, or vise versa? The Old Radio World website has 480 episodes (in mp3 format). http://www.oldradioworld.com/shows/Gunsmoke.php The versions on this website are of higher quality than those offered on archive.org. Can't you just imagine the opening Gunsmoke credits that show Matt Dillon in a shootout, with Barney in his place? Fellow Mayberrians, Thanks Joe for mentioning the Andy Griffith appearance from 1985 on the David Letterman Show. What a great one! That's a great story Larry! Yes, Jim was a wonderfully personable person. I once found myself standing next to him in a buffet line, in the 70s. Leonard Blush - Howard Morris et al
Mike, I'm with you about it being Howard who did the singing, although in some ways it sounds a bit like Don Knotts. Although the singer's voice isn't typical of Don's, in its sound, I was going back to the sound of Don's voice in "Now In The Month Of Maying". This topic is fascinating and might beg for some investigation into the manner in which the shows were produced at that time. For example, was this radio voice 'feature' done simultaneous to the scene being shot (elsewhere on the soundstage), or was it pre or post recorded and mixed in with the scene? The Griffith Show was a little different from the usual 3 camera sitcoms, many of which tended to do things as much on the cheap as possible. The single camera approach of the Griffith Show, however, may have afforded the resources necessary to perhaps pre or post record such a feature. So, to make a long story longer..lol...it may (or may not) have been Don Knotts. Leonard Blush's speaking voice does sound almost like a different voice than that of the singing voice (although this is common in many singers). Howard Morris was undeniably a man of many voices, as well, and I wouldn't doubt it for a minute if he did the singing and news reporter voice (which is very evident in his speaking voice and range). The Ghost and Mr Bon Ami
Hi Paul! I'm with you on that! It's my favorite of Don's movies too. When I was a kid, it was even a little scary (esp when Kelsey turns around slowly when playing the organ, hunched over). The picnic speech (with the paper notes flapping agains the microphone, only to be swept away ('gone with the wind')) was excellent and always leaves me gasping for air!! :) I got to enjoy the tail end of it on Saturday night, and I couldn't help but wonder if Don was hurt by the impact of Reta Shaw's purse (did she have a brick in it?)! The interesting thing is that the scary parts are played very straight, which adds to the ambiance. :) The music is classic...who can think of the movie without thinking of Vic Mizzy's organ music? Even the opening "Universal Saturn" clip is scored to blend with the movie.. Nydia Westman did a great job with "And they used Bon Ami." I saw her in another scary film: with Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard in "The Cat and the Canary" from 1939. Burt Mustin then shakes his hand, after handing Luther the flashlight...cracks me up! Allan did a great 2 part "Two Chairs No Waiting" (episodes 159 and 160) just on "The Ghost and Mr Chicken" back in 2011. Andy at the Bus Station
Jacob, Thanks for the great perspective from the 60s-70s. It reminds me of the photos when Andy would re-visit Mt Airy, and how the town was then. That simple 8x10 at the bus station was so succinct that it says it all. A simple town with little pretense and a 'town notable' at the bus station. Just as Andy didn't want the movie made about Mayberry, it seems that that 8x10 was as extravagant as the original town wanted to be, at the time. Thanks, Clyde "Barn" -- Message: 1 Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2017 13:13:48 -0400 From: Jacob ShepherdTo: wbmutbb@wbmutbb.com Subject: re: Mayberry Days Report 2017 Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Nice report Allan. I listened to the podcast too. Sounds like a fun time. I lived in Mount Airy from 1964 to 1972 and at that time, there was no 'Mayberry' themed influence in the town at all. The Snappy Lunch was there, of course, but it was not well-known that it had been mentioned in the show. Everyone knew that Andy had been born in Mount Airy, but he seemed to make a conscious effort to distance the show from the town and he seldom, if ever, visited. There was a black and white 8X10 photo of Andy on the bulletin board of the local bus station; that was the only Andy Griffith-related item in town at that time. Mayberry Days
Hi Gang, It was a real (BIG) pleasure getting to return to Mayberry Days again this year, after being absent last year. Arriving on Friday, I first encountered Floyd sitting on a park bench, chatting with a few of us. A lady barber arrived and wanted a picture of her cutting Floyd's hair, so I snapped a few of the ceremonial hair clipping. There were quite a few loose scalps around, let me tell you what! It was nice to meet you again, Allen. I found the Mayberry postmark, and the friendly folks at the post office gave me the scoop on that. Moseying on down (or up) to the Andy Griffith Museum, I chatted with Emmett Forrest and Allen and took their photo. Emmett has some nice new items in there, including a sheet music for What It Was Was Football that I hadn't seen before. He also pointed me to the Mad magazine that featured Andy, from 1958, I think. George Lindsey, Jr. was super friendly, and we chatted for quite some time in the lower level of the museum. He posed with me, and mentioned that he would be barely recognizable in the Saturday parade. Saturday began with the great and incredible parade with the traditional rain, which was all a part of the proceedings. RE: What did Opie say; Fudge Sound; and Opie Hanging on to Andy's Arm
Hi Gang, That's a good one, Paul! Thanks for sharing that. There's a similar scene in which Andy and Barn are walking, checking the doors, as Thel was going with Gome to the movies. We can still hear Barn talking as if he had no fudge in his mouth, yet the camera shows him chewing. I wonder if quite a few of the outdoor scenes in particular had overdubbed sound? In reading about the British tv show from the 60s, the Avengers, it said that they filmed 'mute' (without recording sound) on the location filming in the early/mid 60s and I was wondering if TAGS did the same thing at times? I also have another question that's been praying or preying on me lately. I can't seem to find the episode in which Opie is hanging on to Andy's arm at the Taylor house, and Andy is trying to shake him loose, seemingly annoyed. Andy is standing, and it seems like they were getting ready to go somewhere. Thanks for any noticing. :) Over and Under, Clyde Barn ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Thanks Paul, for the DVD and memorabilia info! Does anyone out there know if the new complete box set has fixed this problem? I wonder about those ebay items. There is an actual barber brush used by Howard McNear in the $200 price range. RE: Ghost and Mr Chicken Letterbox
On the topic of The Ghost and Mr Chicken, I was wondering if any of you have ever found a laserdisc or dvd release that has the Special haunted house design on the top and bottom letterbox areas, as described below? I remember seeing it on tv this way, and I think That the opening titles were the only part of the movie to have this special border artwork - when the movie started in earnest, the picture became 'full screen/pan and scan'. http://www.kiddiematinee.com/g-gmchicken.html On TV, from the late 1960's to c.1990, the letterboxed titles of The Ghost And Mr. Chicken had the old Universal widescreen borders, which normally featured a curlyque design in the spaces. For some prints of The Ghost And Mr. Chicken, they featured a special haunted house design in the top and bottom letterbox areas. New video copies have only black letterbox bars. (AP) -- Bluegrass legend and banjo pioneer Earl Scruggs, who helped profoundly change country music with Bill Monroe and later with guitarist Lester Flatt, has died. He was 88. Scruggs' son Gary said his father passed away Wednesday morning at a Nashville, Tenn., hospital. Gary Scruggs said his father died of natural causes. The elder Scruggs was an innovator who pioneered modern banjo sound. His use of three fingers rather than the clawhammer style elevated the banjo from a part of the rhythm section -- or a comedian's prop -- to a lead instrument. His string-bending and lead runs became known worldwide as the Scruggs picking style. It was perhaps most prominently displayed on the iconic theme from The Beverly Hillbillies. Floyd....the Plumber?
Hi Gang, I've been enjoying the broadcasts of the great Burns and Allen Show lately, and I've been delighted to see Howard McNear appear on several of them. In several episodes, he has a recurring role of Mr. Jansen, a widowed plumber with four teenage daughters. One episode in particular, The Plumber's Union (1957), is strikingly similar to another episode...Floyd, the Gay Deceiver, in that some of the facts about Mr. Jansen are 'stretched' in order to attract a female. The only thing that Mr. Jansen didn't do was shout Miserable, deceitful WRETCH!'. Floyd, the Park Commissioner, talks to Gracie about his bulbs
Well, well, well (as Barn said), who should I see Saturday night on Burns and Allen, but Howard McNear, playing the Parks Commissioner of New York City (Mr. Lambert), on the Burns and Allen Show (episode 196 - The Stolen Plants). Gracie had nipped (in the bud) some daffodils, and she was turning herself in to Howard (well, submitting herself for arrest), who suggests she can just pay for the plants. Well, that turns into a scandal, as Gracie starts spreading the word that Mr. Lambert (Floyd...err..Howard) is selling plants out of the park, and it winds up in the paper. Re: Andy's Autograph
Thanks Paul! Yes, unless it's an in person autograph or there is photographic evidence of the signing, or the seller is extremely trustworthy and/or belongs to and is in good standing with the UACC and other reputable organizations. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, in which a known non-signer will sign (human nature), but it pays to err on the side of caution and step out with the right foot so all will go well. :) Here are some good links to help those with buying autographs: http://www.oocities.org/hollywood/cinema/3950/dealers.htm http://www.geocities.com/~sbeck/dealers.htm Both offer tips, advice, and organizational links. Hope this helps, Clyde Barn Almost all autographed photos of Andy Griffith were actually signed not by Andy himself, but by his manager, Richard O. Linke (with Andy's permission). When anyone wrote in to ask for an autographed photo, Mr. Linke would do the signature. He could make a near-perfect copy, and he probably still can to this day. That being said, it is certainly true that there are a few genuine items out there that Andy actually did sign with his own hand. For one thing, according to Mr. Linke, Andy always signed his checks himself. So a cancelled check with Andy's signature is the real thing. I have one, and will be glad to send a picture of it to anybody who wants to see what the genuine signature looks like. Another thing to remember when buying autographs is that a certificate of authenticity is worthless. Anyone who would sell fake autographs would not hesitate to print up a fake certificate to go with it. The only way to be absolutely certain that an autograph is authentic is to get it yourself, in person, but to my knowledge Andy has never appeared at any sort of autograph show, and I'm also told that he quit giving out autographs decades ago. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Those McNearian Shades
Fellow Mayberrians, Here's a subject that hasn't come up, so far as I can see, at least in a wee while. This is under the wider umbrella of Mayberry props and costumes... During his early years in the show, Floyd wore a sort of wire rimmed glasses, up until his time away from the show, due to his recuperation from the stroke. After the stroke, his appearances were with the dark rimmed glasses. I've always assumed that the stroke necessitated a glasses change, but the more I think about it, I also wonder if it was part of a wardrobe update for Floyd? Has anyone read or heard anything about this? Most of the cast didn't seem to have any really noticeable wardrobe changes or updates, but maybe they were very subtle. It's one of those things that many of us, I'm sure, take for granted when we see Floyd, but it's got me real curious! RE: Mayberry Days!~
Thanks for the great update on Mayberry Days! For those of us who couldn't make it this year, this makes one feel like one is really there. About that cheaper gas, was it Ethyl? I hear Barney has been doing a random gas check on cars in Mayberry, so everyone lookout! You just might wind up with a pickle! RE: The Gun on Top of the Hutch
Yes, that is a little odd, Ken! Maybe in principle, he was 'without a gun,' but he knew that there were times when one was needed. Of course, there was that rack of 'big guns' down at the court house, and Andy even had the bead on Goober 'that one time.' Big guns were in case Goober put a car in the courthouse. Maybe the small gun was just in case Goober made spaghetti *again*! Something that always seemed so out of character with the Taylor household and Mayberry in general is that in the episode High Noon in Mayberry we learn that Andy keeps a revolver on top of Aunt Bee's dining room hutch. He also kept the bullets close by. Andy had always made it known that he never felt the need to carry a gun in Mayberry because there was no need and he wanted the people to respect him and not fear him because he wore a gun. So why would he feel he needed to keep a gun in the dining room of his own home when he felt there was no need to ever lock the doors? I have also wondered whether Aunt Bee and Opie would have known the gun was there. Certainly they would have come across the bullets when they were kept in the hutch drawer. (not hutch door). At one time I thought perhaps Andy put the gun there after finding out that the ex con was coming to visit him. This is the only scenario that makes sense to me. But then Andy had no idea he would come to the house until he called him, and at that time the gun was already there. If anyone has any insight on this I would enjoy hearing it. Hey Wade, Sure thing! I think all chapters are pretty autonomous (I got that from one of them quarter magazines) so if there is contact info, they'll usually submit it to Floyd (Allen) and he puts it on the site. Alternatively, they'll have their own website (sometimes). Yes, as Linda said, the POC would be Floyd. Leon Ames in St. Louis
Dear Fellow Mayberrians, Well, the Borders bookstore (not to be confused with the border on Old Man Kelsey's Creek, Woods, or Ocean) on Main and Elm is closing down, and I got a nifty spiffy special edition DVD set of Meet Me In St Louis with none other than Mr. Hampton, the high school principal, before he came to Mayberry just in time for the Senior Play (not to be mistaken for the Senor Play). I almost said he lives in the 18th century, although I think the story was set in the early 20th century. ;-) Leon Ames sure had quite a career! RE: The Oval Window and Curtains
Debbie, Yes, I've noticed that window! It sure does seem to meander about town quite a bit. Did it appear in Barney and the Choir? Another thing that seemed to appear quite a bit was interior curtains that separated rooms. That was more of the style back then, but it seems that Thelma Lou's curtains appeared in several other stories as well. Mayberry Songs and Mayberry Weather
Hi Gang! I think my favorite songs in Mayberry are: 1. Mayberry Union High (when sung by Andy and Barney) 2. The Manhunt (especially when played as background music to Barney 'going over the top.') 3. Oh When the Saints Go Marching In (conducted by Earl and played by the orchestra in the Fun Girls episode at the big dance) 4. That little instrumental dance number (title unknown) that makes numerous appearances (when the Fun Girls show up at Andy's house at the end of the ? episode and have the radio/phonograph playing and Barn says Ange...since it's Friday night? They *are* good dancers.) Also, it appears when Aunt Bee is teaching Opie how to dance, although the arrangement is different and the tempo is slower. It usually features an electric guitar as the lead instrument. It might appear elsewhere. 5. Chattanooga Choo Choo (The Return of Barney Fife - played by Carl Benson's Wildcats, consisting of drummer, accordionist, and Mrs ? (the librarian) on saxophone). There's a neat site called rocklopedia fakebandica, dedicated to 'fake bands,' which listed this one. (www.fakebands.com) Over to Mayberry weather, yes, that big electrical storm in Dogs, dogs, dogs also came to my mind. Didn't it also storm when Andy and Barney were checking up on Quiet Sam? I recall talk of there being deputies left over from 'the flood,' as well. Over and Under, Clyde Barn ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Thanks for sharing, Keith! Yes, it's a good thing he's a 'Sheriff Without a Gun'! :) Speaking of Adam-12, I saw our own Aunt Nora playing an oinery landlady who was being just plain oinery to a tenant. Malloy told her to go back to her room or he would arrest her. I wonder what Uncle Ollie would've said? Over and Under, Clyde Barn A local station has been showing episodes of Adam-12. This evening the officers were attending an awards ceremony honoring Reed for saving Malloy's life. Accompanying Malloy was our own Helen Crump. The kicker was when the Sergeant told Malloy Keep an eye on her. She goes for men in uniform. Thank goodness Andy didn't know. He gets insanely jealous over his women.
