Father's Day Tribute

2022-06-20 Thread Joe
Today in our newspaper's weekly TV listings magazine, there was an article
about the 15 most memorable television fathers.
Here's what it said about our favorite TV Dad:

*"Sheriff Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith, "The Andy Griffith Show") - The
plain-speaking widower's love for son Opie (Ron Howard) was evident in
every breath he took, and every life lesson he taught."*

Well said.

Tribute to Jim Nabors

2017-12-02 Thread LGillum
It was a number of years ago when my wife and I met Jim Nabors . . . not
the usual expected sort of meeting.  Jim was performing at Denver's
historic theatre in Elitch Gardens and we had arrived to enjoy the show,
thrilled to be able to see him in person.   We pulled our car into a
parking space near the theatre.   At that very moment, a small sports
car convertible, top down, whizzed into the space immediately left of
our car.  Out jumped a vivacious young man wearing a big smile from ear
to ear.   It took a moment for our eyes and brains to register the
reality:  The driver parking next to us was none other than Jim Nabors.
When we finally accepted that, we expected that he would ignore us and
rush off to ready himself for the evening's show.   Not so.  Jim gave us
his classic friendly greeting and stopped momentarily to chat, to ask
how we were, and to inquire if we had come to see the show.   It was the
strangest but most wonderful thing, for my wife and I immediately had a
strong sense that this was someone we had known for a lifetime -- an old
friend.   Needless to say, this encounter certainly heightened our
enjoyment of his show later.  We had always appreciated Jim's acting and
singing abilities, especially in his comic character on TAGS, but now we
knew closeup that his friendliness and caring manner were genuine traits
in his personal character.   We have never forgotten that brief moment
of parking next to a star and near an old friend.   He was such a warm,
personable, genuinely nice person, and we already miss him.    Rest in
peace, dear friend Gomer.

Tribute to those passed on

2017-01-02 Thread Johnna Clarke
Our Blood Brothers fan club meeting is January 8 near Macon, Missouri. It's
our annual Christmas gathering, and we have special music planned by
members Ronnie and Mary Beth, husband and wife duo who play guitar and
upright bass, respectively. We'll also plan to play "Merry Fishmas"
followed by our gift exchange. Our noon luncheon main dish will be Mrs.
Foster's Chicken a la King (we just hope it doesn't taste like wallpaper
paste). As part of the program, I want to pay tribute to those actors who
have passed away in 2016. I know recently was Malcolm Meriwether and Mr.
Heathcoat. Could someone please post a definitive list? My last resort is
to peruse the old issues of the newsletter. Just hoping to get a list here.

Many thanks in advance.

Andy tribute

2012-12-30 Thread jlj9675
I'm happy to report that unlike People magazine, TCM put Andy first in their
tribute to the losses of 2012 in the entertainment industry. Their
presentation this year begins with the scene of an abandoned drive-in movie
theater and thereafter shows Andy before all the others who left us. It is
certainly befitting to us Mayberrians as that surely was our greatest loss.
The only aspect I don't like is the very sad music that accompanies this
airing; it seems to get sadder every year.

2012-12-30 Thread Dolly
Chuck; I found the short wave questions interesting because I'm a big short
wave fan. They had them back in the 60's, Daddy had one. I had one in the
late 70's which had to have an antenna attached outside so they obviously
took some artistic license with that episode. However now you have me on a
quest to find out and to get another shortwave. I found the MiG-25 (with
battery)was designed in the very early 60's, and first flew in 1964, so if
that episode was post 64 it might have been real. Now I want another
shortwave.

Aunt Bea, I agree with you,the music get's sadder every year and perhaps
part of that is our sadness in seeing it gone.

Andy Tribute at IBMA Award Show

2012-09-22 Thread Jeff Koontz
My wife is co-producing the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA)
Awards Show at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville TN again this year.
The show will open with a nice tribute to Andy Griffith featuring Roland White
(and my Martin D-18 on a rocking chair). I'm sad that I won't be there to see
it in person but am very proud of her hard work and know it will be a great
show for bluegrass fans. There will also be tributes to Doug Dillard, Doc
Watson and the big finale will honor Earl Scruggs with current IBMA Entertainer
of the year, Steve Martin (yes, that one - comedian, actor, author, art
collector, etc.) leading 30 banjo pickers!

The show is this coming Thursday night 9/27 at 8pm EST and it will be broadcast
live on Sirius XM Channel 61 Bluegrass Junction and then edited down for radio
broadcast the following weeks. Claire isn't sure if the Andy Tribute will make
the live broadcast since it is being rolled into the opening announcements
(exits, turn off cell phones, etc.). I trust they'll do the right thing.

As proud as I am for her efforts, I was also proud that she corrected the
script with Aunt Bee rather than Aunt Bea.

Singing News Tribute to Andy

I previously reported Mark Bishop's tribute to Andy in this month's issue of

Andy Griffith Tribute week-Elizabethtown, Kentucky

2012-08-20 Thread Dannylobrien
The city of Elizabethtown, Kentucky had a special Andy Griffith Tribute
Week last week at our restored 1940's art deco theater. One night they showed
No Time For Sergents to a fairly full house, then they had 5 great
episodes of the Andy Gifffith Show one night to another good crowd, then they
showed Return To Mayberry one night (I enjoyed it much more now than I did
in 1986), and then finally on Saturday night Karen Knotts was in town to do
her Tied Up In Knotts show to an almost packed house! There were folks
there from all over! It was a great week for Andy Griffith Show Fans in
Kentucky. With the very good response I think the theater and city will try to
do more in the future related to the show. They are showing The Ghost and
Mr. Chicken in October! Karen Knotts' show was very good, I am a big Don
Knotts fan and learned a lot of if trivial trivealities as well as a few
facts known by few! The director of the theater is a very big Andy Griffith
Show fan and I think she will try to work this into some type of yearly thing
with the wonderful response she got on this first attempt. Maybe she needs
to get in touch with Alan and David Browningthey could add a lot to the
 festivities!

Mount Airy tribute to Andy Griffith - September

Andy tribute not planned until September
by Tom Joyce
Staff Reporter

Andy Griffith fans seeking to honor hismemory through an organized public event
in his hometown will have to waituntil September, according to city and Surry
Arts Council officials….

Instead of a Mount Airy memorial service or similar event being held inclose
proximity to the actor’s death, which occurred last week, a tribute to Griffith
is planned forMayberry Days. This year the annual celebration of characters and
events of“The Andy Griffith Show” is slated for Sept. 27-30 — more than two
months away….

Mayor Deborah Cochran added that the September observance might be betterfrom
the public’s standpoint. “We are confident that we will have a largenumber of
fans from all over the United States, some from othercountries, and we want to
give them enough time to make plans to be here.”….

In addition to the salute to Griffith, the upcoming Mayberry Days will include
two tribute concerts to Doug Dillard onSept. 28. Dillard, known for his role as
a member of the Darling family on “TheAndy Griffith Show,” had performed here
during each of the previous 22 years ofMayberry Days until his death on May
16….

My Tribute to Andy

2012-07-06 Thread Ken Anderson
I spent some time this past weekend being interviewed by our local
newspaper and one of our TV stations. I was also on one of the morning
local talk radio shows. I submitted the following tribute to Andy which
will be printed in our newspaper this week.

For the past two years I have had the pleasure of traveling around west
central Wisconsin driving my 1965 Ford Galaxie replica Mayberry squad car
and dressing as Barney Fife. I have attended many classic car shows and
have participated in parades in many small towns as The Mayberry Guru.

I think it is only fitting that I share a few thoughts about the passing of
Andy Griffith. In one of The Andy Griffith Show episodes, Deputy Barney
Fife said that Andy Taylor was the best friend Mayberry ever had. I would
like to expand that thought by saying Andy Taylor was one of the best
friends America ever had. Portraying Sheriff Andy Taylor, Andy Griffith
showed millions of viewers for five decades what is decent and right about
this great country. The town of Mayberry and the character Andy Griffith
portrayed may have been fictitious, but the values they represented were
very real then and are very real today.

As I travel around the state in my squad car I get to talk with hundreds of
people and while doing so I have discovered an important truth. Many people
today are yearning to return to a time when life was much slower and
simpler. They yearn for their children and grandchildren to be able to
grow up in a place like Mayberry where they can enjoy being children and
where they are not forced to grow up too fast.

I have also had the great privilege of giving my Mayberry Presentation to
over fifty groups all over Wisconsin and Minnesota. People of all ages
share with me their love of the Andy Griffith Show and what an impact Andy
Griffith had on their lives through his portrayal of Sheriff Taylor.

I never had the honor of meeting Andy Griffith. But if I would have met
him I would have said to him, “Thank you my friend. Thank you for giving
us more than fifty years of great entertainment. Thank you for showing us
what life is meant to be like. Thank you for all the laughs and for all
the tears.”

Just because Andy Griffith is no longer with us, that does mean the end of
Mayberry. Mayberry will live on in all the hearts that have come to love
that wonderful town and its wonderful people. And thanks to modern
technology future generations will also be able to enjoy Andy Griffith, a
true icon of the entertainment industry.

that Mayberry town
                                                      as we watch the Andy

Nice Tribute

2012-07-04 Thread Harry Brewbaker
I was listening to Mike and Mike this morning on ESPN Radio and had no idea
those two were such big fans of Andy Griffith.  For their first tribute they
whistled the theme to the show and then later they played the version from the
early 60's where Andy sang the lyrics to The Fishin Hole.  Mike Greenberg
then made a comment I found very touching.  He said, Andy Griffith was an
artist.  It is the goal of most artists to leave a legacy that outlives them.
99.9% of artist fail to do that.  Andy Griffith has left a legacy that will go
on long after his passing.  Amen, Mike.  They went on to talk about TAGS never
being off the air and Greenberg said something I could definately relate to,
even though I was raised in the south and he was raised in New York City.   If
you were a kid home sick from school, you watched The Andy Griffith Show
during the day.   These guys know more than sports.

While it is a sad time, there is much to celebrate.  A truly fine and caring
man who gave so much pleasure and entertainment to so many people.  I was
talking to a friend yesterday about Andy.  He gave Andy a great compliment.
I'd put Andy Griffith up there with John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart, if they were
in it, I would watch it.

This may sound strange, but even though I never met Mr. Griffith, I'm proud to
say I knew him.

My Tribute to My Mother and My Mother in Law

2011-05-08 Thread Ken Anderson
My mother once told me that she wished she would have met me before she decided
to have kids. I have often wondered what she meant by that. My mother had a
great sense of humor. One time my brothers and I took her shopping in my
brother's 1954 Pontiac convertible. ( now there was a car). We had the top
down on the way home and she complained about her ears getting cold. We called
her an old fuddy duddy. She got even. She reached into her shopping bag and
took out a new bra she bought and put it on her head so it would cover her
ears. It fit perfectly. I never knew my mother had size 36 D ears. My wife's
mother was named Gladys, but I always called her Happy Hinder. Linda has 16
siblings and it all came about because her mother was hard of hearing. Her ma
and pa would go to bed each night and her pa would say, Honey, do you want to
go to sleep or what? And her ma would always answer, What?.

A Tribute to TAGS

2011-05-05 Thread Susan Blank
Every year at the elementary school where I teach music, we celebrate Right to
Read Week. This year's theme is Dive Into Reading, and I was asked to write a
song for the kids to sing at our Kickoff Assembly. The first day is fishing
day, and everyone wears fishing gear. Well, as soon as I heard about the
theme, the TAGS theme song popped into my head! I rewrote the words, and we
have a song! When I taught it, I was surprised and pleased to find that a LOT
of the kids recognized the tune, and a lot of them and their parents are fans
of TAGS! It really made my day. Long live TAGS

Mr. Schwump tribute artist

2010-10-12 Thread King of Mayberry
Harry, I am happy to report that there IS a Mr. Schwump tribute artist. He
appears every Mayberry Days at the Sat. evening Col. Tim's Talent Time. I've
heard his toupee is quite bad too. He is not seen in the Mayberry Days parade,
but I've heard folks do get him mixed up with the Mayberry Days trivia champion
though. People sure are odd..

Mr. Schwump

I suprised there isn't a Mr. Schwump tribute artist.? He'd never have to talk,
just smile and nod.? At the Mayberry
Days parade he could ride in a convertable with a Mrs. Wiley or a Nice Dress
Nellie tribute artist.? I know a man who
doesn't look like Mr. Schwump, but he has a toupee that looks a lot like Mr.
Schwump's.? Maybe he loan it to someone.

Tribute Artists..more

2010-08-09 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)
Just to add to what Sandy and Mike have said, Tim does have a great
relationship with George Lindsey. The last time I saw Tim, he talked
about going to George's birthday party. He reported that George asked
Him How is our career going? George's heath does not allow him to do
much acting or very few appearances, as I understand.

So, not to beat this to death, but there is no rule written or unwritten
that a tribute artist's character's original actor cannot be alive. Don
Knott's enjoyed many joint appearances with David Browning before his
death. Just to add one more tidbit. While some Tribute Artists could
be basically volunteer, David Browning is a professional actor. Doing
the Mayberry Deputy (as well as other acting) is his career.

I enjoyed seeing the clip also. Thanks for sharing that.

Tribute Artists

2010-08-09 Thread Ken Anderson
Someone mentioned whether or not I got paid when I do my presentations. I
usually ask for the very nominal donation of $25 and then I give that to our
food bank at our church. I also donate 100% of the price of my books to our
food pantry too. We serve between 300-400 families every week. Many times
I present for free if the groups do not have funds. Just to clarify too
that I do not consider myself to be a tribute artist in any shape or form.
I always begin my talks by saying that I am in no way pretending to be
Barney Fife nor will I try to act like him. I simply wear the uniform as a
way to make my presentations a bit more interesting and to pay tribute to
Don Knotts for the fine actor that he was. I have the highest regard and
respect for all those Mayberry tribute artists out there. What a remarkable
job they do keeping Mayberry alive and well for all of us. I enjoyed that
news clip the other day so much. Having never met any of the artists in the
flesh it is always great to be able to see clips of them.

Thank you to all of you who emailed me regarding my talk that I am going to
give at my school reunion. So many of you mentioned that Guy Doud has
influenced you as well.

MAYBERRY TRIBUTE

2010-08-07 Thread DAVID QUINN

I was watching the video posted on this site about the people doing the
Mayberry tribute today. One part of the tribute bothered me. I have no
problem with people impersonating our friends that have passed on, Otis,
Barney, Howard, but it made me uneasy to see someone impersonating Goober when
Goober is very much alive, and as far as I know is trying to make a living by
acting. I am not smart enough to know if that is legal, but it just does not
seem right to steal a man's character while he is still using it.

to steal my character. You know, the chicken coop casanova thing.

Joe Gritton has so much feeling for Mayberry and it's message in our lives. I
was so proud to perform the piece that he wrote. I first did it in 2000 at my
home church and then last Saturday night in Berea SC at Berea First Baptist
Church with their Minister Ronald Vaughan. What a thrill it is to take
someone's idea and words and make them come to life. Joe, you are a prince and
I am so grateful to have you as a friend and ghost writer. Also, my new
friends Tom and Kathy Rusk couldn't have been nicer and some of the photo's

Don Knotts Tribute

2007-02-22 Thread Ken Anderson
Because I will not have my computer available early next week, I decided to
post this tribute to Don Knotts a bit early

It will be exactly one year ago next Monday that the entertainment
industry and fans of comedy everywhere lost one of its all time great
artists. Over the years many new comedians have come onto the scene in
Hollywood, but one thing remains certain. Don Knotts has to take a back seat
to no one when it comes to true talent and class.

Comedy has undergone tremendous changes over the years, but because of Don
Knott's portrayal of Barney Fife, some of the greatest comedy of all times
has been preserved forever. Without ever using a four letter word, a sexual
innuendo or an off color joke, Don Knotts was able to bring laughter into
the homes of millions of people around the world. And the wonderful thing is
that after more than 47 years since he first appeared as Deputy Sheriff
Barney Fife, he continues to bring that same laughter in homes everywhere.
Families continue to gather in livings rooms across our great land to spend
special times with Barney Fife and all his friends in Mayberry. Fan clubs
have emerged everywhere, websites are dedicated to his memory, and people
gather in churches to study their bibles through the laughter of Don Knotts.
I challenge anyone to name one other comedian that has attained that status.
Don Knotts was more than a comedian. He was an outstanding actor and even
more importantly, he was a gentleman and a role model for everyone who ever
saw him.

It doesn't take talent to stand up in front of people and tell tasteless
jokes. It doesn't take talent to stand up in front of people to belittle
others or poke fun of our nation's president or religious leaders. It does
take talent to portray characters such as Barney Fife, Jesse W. Heywood,
Royal Fleming, Hollis Figg, Luther Heggs, and countless others.

I will always be thankful for having experienced the talent of Don Knotts.
He has brought to my life so many moments of pure joy and laughter. He has
transformed some very difficult times in my life into moments where I could
forget my problems and pain. Don Knotts emulates what a true artist should
be. Many so called comedians in today's entertainment industry do not
deserve to be called artists. They may get laughs when they perform, but
that is one of the key differences between them and Don Knotts. While they
simply perform, Don Knotts became the characters that he portrayed, and he
did it with dignity, professionalism, and class, Don Knotts has no equal,
and I doubt that he ever will.

lecture tribute to Don Knotts

2006-09-28 Thread Kathy Hinkley
Hello fellow Mayberrians,

Wanted to say we had a good time at Mayberry Days.

However, we missed the tribute to Don Knotts. We thought

There'd be one in the Colonel Tim's show like they had last year

For Howard Morris. Needless to say, we went to Colonel Tim's in the
afternoon,

And found out the tribute was in the cinema at the same time.

So, we'd like to know if by any chance anyone taped the lecture and would be
willing to

Let us pay for a copy? We were hoping to get the tribute on tape ourselves
as we were

The only ones able to attend from our club this year. If anyone could do so
please let me know!!

Sure would appreciate it!!

TRIBUTE TO ANDY GRIFFITH

2006-03-17 Thread Karla Nurnberg
Hi,
I cannot say that I grew up watching TAGS, because I graduated from High
School in 1964. However, I enjoyed watching reruns of it, while I attended
college, because one of my roommates had a TV. Some of us wish for the good ole
times to return. On a visit to my husband's brother and family in Georgia we
visited a little country store, which I just loved and there was a Goober's
Peas stand across the street, so this former Idahoan got to taste them for the
first time. Now that we live in the south I am looking forward to more Mayberry
type experiences.
In 1988 I contracted Guillian Barre Syndrome and spent 35 days in a
University Medical Center. My five young children were taken care of by my two
sisters, so that my husband did not have to worry about them. My oldest sister
sent me a Reader's Digest Article about Andy Griffith's struggle with this same
illness. What an inspiration to me that he had fought it and he had not become
paralized from it. When I got discouraged about whether I would ever get
better, I had his example to remember, so I fought. My dear aunt sent me a card
to remind me that I was a fighter, too. Thank heavens for people like Andy and
my aunt..
Thank you Mr. Andy Griffith for sharing your talents with us the American
Public. Your TAGS shows can be shared with our children and grandchildren over
and over again without any smutty lines to have to explain or to embarrass us.
Another thing that we enjoy about TAGS is when Andy picks up his guitar and
shares that talent with us.
One of my favorites is when he sang DOWN IN THE VALLEY.
Mr. Griffith thank you for the Mattlock series also. Some of us enjoy a
good Whodunit. When I was a youngun, I mispronouned that word, as Whod unit. I
must have some of Jeff Foxworthy's ancestors on my line.
God Bless You Mr. Griffith for loving our Barney to the end. Good
Friends are priceless. They are the riches that we all need to seek after.
Also, it is rewarding to be a good friend.
  A loyal TAGS Fan,
  Karla

Ron and Rance Howard / Tribute to Andy

2006-03-07 Thread Cynthia Mahoney
The older Ron Howard gets, the more he looks like his father, especially in
the eyes.

I have always thought that Ron Howard looked a lot like his dad, even when he
was a little guy. However, I do agree that the older he gets, the more he
looks and sounds like Rance. He probably always looked like Rance did at the
same age, but we didn't notice it until Ron was an adult since we don't know
what Rance looked like as a child. I remember seeing an episode of Happy Days
a few years ago and Rance Howard played a character in it. When I looked at
middle aged Rance in that episode, he looked so much like Ron does now.

I am in full agreement with the idea that we should create some sort of tribute
to Andy Griffith while he is still with us. Although I believe that he already
knows how much he is appreciated for his talent and hard work, it would be so
much better for us to let him know it while he is still able to enjoy it. One
single word of praise said to a living person is worth more than 1000 words of
praise after the person has passed on.

Oscar In Memoriam tribute

2006-03-06 Thread Dawn
Anthony, you beat me to it. I watched the Oscars last night, in particular
hoping to see a nice tribute to Barn' during the annual In Memoriam
montage. I was so surprised that he wasn't featured (nor Dennis Weaver nor
Darren McGavin). My guess is that they put together those montages a week
or two in advance and move onto the next to do item on their big list. I
expect we'll see a tribute to all 3 actors at next year's Academy Awards.
It will seem like very old news by then, but won't it be nice to have a warm
reminder of Don in March 2007.

Did I miss it? During the Academy Awards program I watched all the names of
the fine talents that left us this past year, and I didn't see Dennis
Weaver, Darren McGavin or Don Knotts.
I believe they all had worked in Hollywood before, and had been in motion
 pictures.
I know it's a club, and what kind of club would it be if they let everybody
 in?
It's the kind of club that if they do this to Don Knotts, I don't want
 anything to do with it.

Tribute to Andy

2006-03-06 Thread Lori Heine
I agree that some sort of a tribute to Andy would be great -- and (unlike the
ones for Don Knotts) before it's too late for him to know about it.

Let's by all means develop this idea, 'cause it's a good one.

Barney tribute

2006-03-06 Thread Kim
Someone suggested having the tribute to Barney on his birthday in July. To
quote our favorite deputy I think that's a peach of an idea. I also agree
that Barney will remain with us, even though I liked the obit. You know how
they write up obituaries for prominent people ahead of time, lets just think of
it as that.

I also like the idea of letting Andy Griffith, and other cast members, know
how much they mean to us.

Corrected Barney Tribute

2006-02-27 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (SBC-OPS)
Hey I've gotten a couple nice notes about my last post, and I really
feed bad that I had a couple typo's in it, so I wanted to send again
with corrections. Thanks again Bill of the Desert for the idea.

Thanks for the Memories
A Deputy named Fife, Thelma Lou his future wife, it doesn't matter that
he caught just a few crooks in his life...We'll miss him so much

Another hapless Jailbreak... A confident smirk and shake... another
messed up fishing trip for Andy at the lake We'll miss our Bar-ney

It seems he's doomed to fail, nothin' but good guys locked in jail, but
somehow his pal Andy will get him a commendation in the mail...That's
our De--puty Fife

His deputy recruits are a joke, everyone knows he'll go for broke, he'll
make a federal case out of a harmless little poke, but that's just...
Bar-ney

Thank God we've got TV, VHS and DVD, for years to come--generations
won't be glum...cause we'll laugh and love our Bar--ney!!

He's really a live wire, Many-a-shot he will misfire, but in the end,
our singing friend is finally in the Heavenly Choir...We will miss
him so much.

During our lifetime we travel many roads. Some big roads, some little
roads, rocky roads and smooth roads, dirt highways and improved
highways. - Barney Fife

Barney, this is a rocky road for your admirers.

I want to give a word of encouragement also to Betty Lynn. She is kind
of the social secretary that keeps all the remaining cast members
connected. She too has lost a great friend.

Thanks to Sam from Knoxville and others who supplied to word to the
Vacant Chair. It seems so appropriate right now.

A Tribute to Mayberry

2006-01-25 Thread Ken Anderson

  A Tribute to Mayberry

Music and laughter throughout the land

Andy's guitar and that sad town band.

Young or old and both girl and boy

Bringing to us many moments of joy.

Each week there were new people to meet

Roaming and walking every Mayberry Street.

Ridiculous Barney at work or play

Yesterday's memories are here to stay.
