[WISPA] Network World Interview

2005-09-14 Thread Rick Harnish

Yesterday, Michael Anderson had John Cox of Network World
call me to interview WISPA on what we have been able to accomplish in the
Hurricane Katrina Crisis Relief Effort.
He is writing a story that will come out in Mondays Issue. He was very detail oriented and I
forwarded contact information for Matt Larsen and Mac Dearman to him. He also interviewed Michael. He asked me to provide the mailing list
with his contact details.

He is looking for more material with how our teams have been
satisfied with their work effort, the flow of equipment, volunteers and so
forth, the frustrations that you have faced and he is definitely interested in
some human interest stories, such as the one Jim Patient sent out last
week. I cant seem to find that
one now. If someone has it, please
forward it to John. If you have
even 5 minutes today and you have participated in this effort in any way,
please send John an email. Im
sure he has deadlines to meet so git r dun today.

Also, a brief description of any help from other groups in
our effort such as CUWIN, MediaAccess Project, Churchofthe.Net,,,others? We
should recognize their efforts as well.

RE: [WISPA] Need Inputs From Hurricane Relief WISPTeamsForFCCPresentation on Thursday

2005-09-14 Thread Rick Harnish
Tom,

What you have said here parallels some of the work I have been trying to
accomplish. We Have to look at the bigger picture, not just the petty day
to day stuff that happens, usually as a result of list traffic. We need to
recognize our strengths and weaknesses (we definitely have both of them) and
take a look at other groups which have similar interests yet a different
menu of strengths and weaknesses. While it would be nice to have a WISPA
presentator at the FCC open commission meeting, I see it more as a wedge
driven between efforts to unite the industry. In the eyes of the FCC,
further fragmentation of the WISP industry will not be looked kindly upon.
They want one interface to deal with. That seems to be one of the
advantages that Part-15 has over WISPA right now. Part-15 is the interface
of choice in the current administration. My opinion is that we accept that
fact and begin interacting with Michael, removing personal issues we may
have and doing what is right for our industry. This crisis will come and
go, there will be another, but if we allow the building blocks of this
partnership to be set in the foundation, we can continue to build the wall
strongly in a more calm period. This is obviously not the time to force
these talks right now, but it is time to strengthen our relationship with
Part-15 by showing our willingness to trust him when he says he will
represent the WISP industry in Washington and not just Part-15.

Look at it this way, If Michael takes credit for all that has happened and
does NOT give WISPA, Mac and JohnnyO's teams any credit, I can envision a
mass exodus of Part-15 subscribers from his ranks. Who in their right mind
would want to support such a selfish display of grandstanding! I say, let's
give the man a chance to do right. Will he say everything correctly? I
doubt it, but would any of us in that situation. Michael has provided us a
seat at the table, let's support him on this one.

Respectfully,

explain what benefit it is to form a relationship with Part-15.

The benefit is there is strength in numbers and strength in unity. The
world doesn't know the difference between a WISP, a WISPA member, a Part-15
member, a training organization, or a non-profit association. Customer
awareness is weak just for wireless alone. By partnering with any
organization that represents WISPs, for any reason, it strengthens WISPs in
the public eye. Regardless of wether Part-15's first effort worked out,
they openly took WISPA on as partners before hand, and I see no reason to
change that after the fact, just because one party ran into an unfortuneate
situation. That would be like using them. Everyone has their contribution.
Part-15 has gotten the ear of the FCC and DC officials, and WISPA has
success stories like Mac Dearmans. Its a match to work togeather. We all
have a common goal, to help solve a crisis. If the intent is real, it only
makes sense to work togeather where ever we can. By coordinating, we also
minimize duplication in efforts between the groups, which in turn allows us
to move faster.

I don't know how you can't see that.

explain what benefit it is to form a relationship with Part-15.
From what I recall, Part-15 is a for profit organization focused on
training and education. The only benefit I see is that the
Part-15 membership rolls are good targets (forgive the not exactly
accurate term) for WISPA membership. I don't see the two

What Part-15 attempted to do in the aftermath of the Katrina event
was honorable and would have been beneficial had it worked out.
There were a combination of things that happened to make their

Yeah, congratulations. I must have been all wrong about Part-15.
 (sigh)

You know, it's kinda strange...

Back on 9-1 and 9-2, we were all asking how we could help. Mac Dearman
asked for some help in his efforts. Bullit was asking people to join in
emergency relief in an active organization. A couple people were
suggesting that an organized group of WISP's should be actively out there
attempting to get stuff done on this list.

In the timeline of events, Bullit was the first to try to put together a
structured organization.

He tried to get WISP's a role in the official efforts of FEMA and ARC, and
in return the ARC mislead us and FEMA never offered any role at all.

Now, in the timeline of things as they occurred, Part-15's efforts are
pretty much the only structured means of WISP's deploying. The ad hoc
support and efforts of others, like Mac Dearman have been, as could be
expected, relatively small in terms of numbers of people, but highly
effective. WISPA did not form an organization, but a couple of our
influential members have played some personal roles in supporting those who
were already there and on the ground.

None of this says anything negative about the character, intentions,
motivations, or anything else, of the people who joined in each effort.
Rather, it offered some of us, who didn't have money or hardware to send,
the ability to use our time and skills the means of least trying to help,
and it offered those who did have those or could move immediately, a means
of doing the same.

Now, becuase I had and have no means of supporting Mac (I have neither money
nor stuff to donate), I offered to support the other organization if they
had some role for me. And they offered me a small one. Should I, then,
have to observe hostility toward the organization I was offered a small role
in by people who I trust to have no other desire than to be useful or do
something good? I'm sure none of you have any desire to obstruct - I'd bet
my last buck and my business on it.

Whatever the personal motivations that an individual, even if that
individual were the one who started t he organization, may or may not be, it
doesn't really matter anymore. There's a whole chartful of people who, as
best I can tell, REALLY want to do something. I know, becuase they've
spent a lot of thier own money to come and play a role, some as far as from
IRAQ to get here. No matter what I think of Michael Anderson personally,
be it good or bad (and Im not willing to open my mouth and say ANYTHING on
that topic right now), those people who are under him are dedicated to doing
something good and have made great investments, some of time and money and
equipment, others of just time, none of which are in ANY way antagonistic to
WISPA, the WISPA members efforts and it would be totally wrong if they met
obstruction or hostility, or a lack of cooperation or support from us.

The very best outcome is that both means of support work out well.

The worst possible outcome at this point, since there's folks on the ground
doing what needs to be done... Is that Part-15 hogs all the credit to the
press. Does that really hurt me, as a WISPA member? No, but it does mean
lost opportunity to advance WISPA in the public eye. And right now, I don't
see that happening. Let's not make there be any reason for it happen, and
if it does, it's a relatively small setback on the road to carrying out our
WISPA mission, that I believe is more than offset by our concerted efforts.
In other words, the outcome - people helped - is to me, worth any possible
future negatives.

These two diverse approaches will be a good study in the future... something
we can all learn from, so we can be more effective in the future, next time
tragedy strikes... and there will be a next time. There always is.

Thanks

Mark

I know Matt has been away from home a bunch lately but I think we
should send Matt Larsen to this FCC event if he will go. We can take
the $500 from Charles as part of the expense and have WISPA cover the
rest. I think we need a front line guy to speak at this event. I think
we should ask Michael to introduce Matt and yield a bit of his time if
the FCC will not grant Matt his own time. This shows unity between
industry groups and gives Part-15 and WISPA both an opportunity to show
our efforts in helping those in need. Thoughts?

Congratulations Charles, so now we have a little Wu I'm sure you're

I'm not trying to start an argument here but WISPA was not invited to
attend
this function. We received very late notice about the conference call
two

weeks ago and none of us caught it in time. Because of that missed
conference call, Part-15 submitted a plan to the FCC and became one of
the

approved vendors. It is my understanding that this open commission
meeting is to allow those vendors to tell their story.
Each vendor has five minutes to give a short presentation. Would the
FCC
allow another slot for WISPA? I'm not sure, maybe Marlon would have
insight
into this. The next question is: Do we want to portray a divided
industry
with Part-15 and WISPA taking credit for the same work? Michael has
asked

the WISPA board to provide him with bullet points of what we have
accomplished this week. He given his word to portray WISPA as an
important
contributor in the efforts of this week and last week. He is very
aware
that the Mac Dearman team has been aligned much closer to WISPA than
Part-15
and he realizes the damage he will do to his own reputation if he
labels

this effort as a Part-15 project.

I am unable to make this trip myself even with Charles great

I have been burning the candle at both ends the last two weeks and
have

plans to go help Mac's Team this weekend. I have been accumulating a
truckload of supplies, computers, monitors, etc. from my local
community

this week. If WISPA needs to have a representative in Washington on
Thursday, I suggest someone step up. I don't believe it necessarily
needs
to be a board member. Mac would be great, but do we really want to
ask him
to do more than he already is? Matt Larsen would be great as well, so
would

Marlon. We will need to get on the agenda right away if someone is
committed to do this.
I have been communicating with Michael a lot lately and I believe I
have
convinced him that part of his frustration in getting assistance has
been
because his first several press releases focused most of the attention
on
Part-15. He IS GETTING BETTER now. He took on a huge project, one

threads.

No knock it off. We're (officially) working with p15. If you don't like
it, take it up with the board.

Arguments about who's daddy is bigger have no place on a public list at this
time. IF the time comes to look back on things and point fingers I'll be
first in line.

For now though, I don't give a rats ass who gets credit. I want to see
those who've got NOTHING left. Now home, no job, no food, no family etc.
taken care of.

No more talk about who's taking the lime light. No more talk about how the
entities are structured. No more back biting. You guys talk about what can
be done to make things better, make people's networks run better, argue
about who's got the best gear out there or whatever, but this push and pull
between p15 and wispa stops now.

I don't have the power to get people booted from this list, but if folks
don't start contributing instead of putting others down I'll make a motion
at the board level to have a few people (even though some of you are my
friends) banned for a cooling off time.

[WISPA] Funding help - The Challenge

2005-09-14 Thread John Scrivner
I am coming down your way Mac. Expect me Thursday late or more likely
Friday. I will either come with Rick Harnish or load a trailer of my own
and bring it your way. Either way I am coming to help any way I can for
a few days.

For those of you who want to help, cash is the word of the day. Get
Mac some money. He won't tell you this but I know he has spent several
thousand of his own money running this deal. It is time for all of you
to help. Go to http://crisis.wispa.org/ and you can send through the
Churchofthe.Net 501c3 there if you need the tax write-off or is only way
your company can help. Send it directly to Mac's Paypal if the tax
credit is not required. His email for paypal is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Jon Price of ISPCON has sent us $2000 to help. That is a challenge I
think. If any of the rest of you have done well in this business and
have it to spare then please send Mac's group some cash. Last I heard he
needs lots of Cat 5 also. So let's get it together guys. Mac and many
others down south are working to help these folks. Let's help them. They
need food and water too. We need to get them money to operate and to
live. Until Uncle Sam steps in (maybe never) then we will have to do
whatever we can to help with what we can put together ourselves.

Here is the challenge to all. I want Mac to have $10K to work with
before Monday morning. Get to work! Get him some cash!

Thanks guys,
Scriv

volunteers by the weekend. If any of you are interested in DONATING

abilities using the KISS method ( keep it simple stupid)

I can not have anyone and everyone just roll into camp. If you do
not have authorization from me - - do not come. I have experienced
this and allowed a couple guys into camp because they came from so
far.I am trying to keep us at a maneagble and efficeient level and not

badges to wear around our necks for identification. We have a FULL

they went home to take care of some business and are back!!!

This just in from Michael Anderson. Why don't you contact him and see if
you can get clearance to attend.

Hi all

Today at noon, I was required to submit my formal Commission briefing that
was to be held tomorrow morning in Washington. The Commission had
originally, back on Sep 12th asked me to provide an industry wide status
report. That report was to be forwarded to the commission no later than
noon, Washington time today.

I was able to produce a document that I believe was a humble attempt to
bring the FCC up to date. I also believe that the report has it's
shortcomings. However, those shortings can and will be addressed during
future updates. In essence, I was pressed for time on this one and did not
nor could not include everything the industry is doing. I will continue to
strive for more in-depth reporting.

I found out late last night that the actual Commission meeting is being
postponed and relocated to Atlanta, GA and although my report will be
included in the overall Commission meeting, I will not be providing a
presentation in person.

Now onto future reporting - I still am in need of your continued status
reporting from the field. Please continue to submit photos, emails and also
the use of the form submission we have established at:
http://www.part-15.org/emergencyrelief/report.asp

Regards and keep up the great work everyone is doing. You are making a
direct and significant difference.

Can you haul port-a-pottys' with the chemical in them? We have two

trailer (dry box) that we are using to make the move in and would have
(make enough room for) these two if they can be transported.

We are going down to bring Internet connectivity, PCs and VOIP to
three places initially. One is a shelter that has 300+ evacuees that
are local to Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi. One of them is the camp
site of City Team and one other camp other than our own.

We are also splitting up and making a second team with a relay yard

of the resources that we are providing. The big trailer will initially
be deployed in Alexandria. Our intentions are to provide as long and
as fast as we can. We will be pulling out of here after while headed

RE: [WISPA] Funding help - The Challenge

2005-09-14 Thread Jon Price
In addition to what's below, fwiw:

1) I'd like to challenge and/or incent any supplier to send gear to Mac in
return for anything I can provide in equal value of exposure or additional
support during the show... space, ads, whatever makes sense to get that
pallet of equipment off the dock on the road to NOLA.

I've been talking to a few of the more conspicuously absent names for that
donation list about this already, but haven't had any firm takers so far. If
you are on the fence about doing something, lmk and we'll find a way to make
it worthwhile to ship out whatever you have that Mac needs and can get into
the field ASAP.

2) If anyone sends Mac / Churchofthe.Net / WISPA a donation of $350 or more,
I'll comp you a pass for our full conference if you haven't signed up yet.
After you get your receipt from Mac, just send me an email and we'll sort it

3) If you don't have the $350 to kick in, but are on the fence about
pitching in from afar or just going there to help for even a few solid
hours, same difference. Send me an email afterwards and we'll work it out,

If any of the rest of you have done well in this business and have it to

Cat 5 also. So let's get it together guys. Mac and many others down south
are working to help these folks. Let's help them. They need food and water
too. We need to get them money to operate and to live. Until Uncle Sam steps
in (maybe never) then we will have to do whatever we can to help with what
we can put together ourselves.

Here is the challenge to all. I want Mac to have $10K to work with before
Monday morning. Get to work! Get him some cash!
Thanks guys,

too. We need to get them money to operate and to live. Until Uncle Sam
steps

in (maybe never) then we will have to do whatever we can to help with what
we can put together ourselves.

Here is the challenge to all. I want Mac to have $10K to work with before
Monday morning. Get to work! Get him some cash!
Thanks guys,
Scriv

I will shoot you the info to get you base camp, but our sleeping
arrangements are less than desireable and we have men sleeping
everywhere so come prepared for whatever. I also am going to have
another changing out of crew and may be in need of some more
volunteers by the weekend. If any of you are interested in DONATING
YOUR TIME GAS please shoot me an email off list stating your
abilities using the KISS method ( keep it simple stupid)

I can not have anyone and everyone just roll into camp. If you do
not have authorization from me - - do not come. I have experienced
this and allowed a couple guys into camp because they came from so
far.I am trying to keep us at a maneagble and efficeient level and not
overwhelm the Camel we are riding. We are now EOC certified and have
badges to wear around our necks for identification. We have a FULL
PASS permit given to us by EOC Mississippi. We had a group of men roll
back into camp this morning that was at the farm for a week and then
they went home to take care of some business and are back!!!

Thanks,
Mac

Did you guys catch the location of the meeting :-(

Forgive me for any negativism, but I wouldn't be surprised if the WISP
report actually just ends up telling Bell South where they need to focus
their efforts.

What would really be interesting would be if Bell South offered to hire
WISPs to help restore their systems. Or Bell south disclosed info where
WISPs could be the most helpful based on where the most damage is to their
network. So the ILEC and WISP united as one in response to tragedy.
Although, I don't see that happening :-(

I'm interested in where the $667 million is going. Does some of it go to
help re-build telco networks? Or is the Bell going to have to foot their own
repair bill?

I'd presume it means WISP presentation time was
squeezed off of the agenda in favor of someone else. I'm sure getting an

I doubt it's size of the room. Since it's
being held at a "Bell facility", I'd bet money what interest may have squeezed
WISP off the agenda. I just think what happened in Texas "this" are

RE: [WISPA] Funding help - The Challenge

2005-09-14 Thread Jon Price
Hey, it's only generous if someone sends Mac some funds or gear. I figure if
we are going to keep losing $ on these conferences, it may as well be for a
good cause.;)

In addition to what's below, fwiw:

 1) I'd like to challenge and/or incent any supplier to send gear to Mac in
return for anything I can provide in equal value of exposure or additional
support during the show... space, ads, whatever makes sense to get that
pallet of equipment off the dock on the road to NOLA.

I've been talking to a few of the more conspicuously absent names for that
donation list about this already, but haven't had any firm takers so far.
 If
you are on the fence about doing something, lmk and we'll find a way to
 make
it worthwhile to ship out whatever you have that Mac needs and can get
 into
 the field ASAP.

 2) If anyone sends Mac / Churchofthe.Net / WISPA a donation of $350 or
 more,
I'll comp you a pass for our full conference if you haven't signed up yet.
After you get your receipt from Mac, just send me an email and we'll sort
 it
 out.

 3) If you don't have the $350 to kick in, but are on the fence about
pitching in from afar or just going there to help for even a few solid
hours, same difference. Send me an email afterwards and we'll work it out,
but either way just do something NOW.

btw, a few weeks back someone here was talking about having a WISPA
 meeting
in a field with tents and jetskis. Well, now's your chance, gang.:)

 cheers,

 Jon

I am coming down your way Mac. Expect me Thursday late or more likely
Friday. I will either come with Rick Harnish or load a trailer of my own
 and
bring it your way. Either way I am coming to help any way I can for a few
 days.

For those of you who want to help, cash is the word of the day. Get Mac
some money. He won't tell you this but I know he has spent several
 thousand
of his own money running this deal. It is time for all of you to help. Go
 to
http://crisis.wispa.org/ and you can send through the Churchofthe.Net
 501c3
there if you need the tax write-off or is only way your company can help.
Send it directly to Mac's Paypal if the tax credit is not required. His
email for paypal is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Jon Price of ISPCON has sent us $2000 to help. That is a challenge I
 think.
If any of the rest of you have done well in this business and have it to
spare then please send Mac's group some cash. Last I heard he needs lots
 of
Cat 5 also. So let's get it together guys. Mac and many others down south
are working to help these folks. Let's help them. They need food and water
too. We need to get them money to operate and to live. Until Uncle Sam
 steps
in (maybe never) then we will have to do whatever we can to help with what
 we can put together ourselves.

Here is the challenge to all. I want Mac to have $10K to work with before
Monday morning. Get to work! Get him some cash!
 Thanks guys,
 Scriv

 Rick,

PASS permit given to us by EOC

If you are just looking for speakers; I speak at conferences regularly
without compensation. Granted they are all software development
conferences, but I certainly wouldn't mind speaking at other industry
conferences.

While it's not the FCC, we are putting together a keynote session on the

stands (I'll even up the ante to 2 speakers)

Do we have some interest?

Colleagues, (Is anyone else
going? I arrive 9:20 am on Air Trans Airways fl 363 from LGA.0

BTW, I have heard that 3.5 GHz
equipment Broadband Wireless Equipment pre-WiMax and 802.11d (2004) certified
may be allowed temporarily by the FCC. There is a lot of good long range equipment
avaialble with QoS built in for quality voice, especially if mounted for line
of sight transmission. Also there is enough spectrum at 3.5 GHz for both
Bell South and independents to compete on price and service. Lets
take the high road and push for an open and level playing field.
