I know with our older Tranzeo's it was a common problem, since we switch
to MT, we haven't seen that problem, plus the features MT provides is
light years beyond any Tranzeo.

How old are they and what models may answer be the answer to why the lock up
when you change them. I've got one TR-5a that I know I should go to be able to

I am going to chime in here and say Look at RADWIN 2000c series. I have one
pair pushing 80+ MB FDX over 20 mile link.

They are more money than UBNT but allot less than Dragonwave and Moto.

http://www.radwin.com/Content.aspx?Page=radwin_2000_series

200 Mbps throughput (40 MHz Channel)
Native TDM (Up to 16 E1s/T1s) + Ethernet over the same link
Single radio supporting multiple bands (2.4 and 4.9 - 5.9 GHz)
Long range - up to 120 Km/75 miles
Adaptive asymmetric capacity - dynamic allocation of uplink & downlink traffic,
enabling more capacity at longer ranges
Advanced MIMO, OFDM and Diversity technologies

I wouldn't use a Nano anything for a long link. The gain is minimal for a
link like that anyhow.

2010-08-31 Thread Robert West
Depends on the equipment but the rule of thumb I always was told was to
power it up only long enough to disable the radio unless you are using
loads. If you don't load the radio and run it long enough, it will indeed
be damaged. I have various examples of that laying around from where uf/l
connectors had popped off the MT cards. Yeah, they still work but only for
close in use now!

I know.

I had trazeo FDD radios that other guys had prepared and 'tested.' Their
testing was putting them back to back. Like that, even with the wrong
channel shields they connected. I was already suspicious about them not
working, so I put up the NS5's as a backup plan, put their power all the
way down, and set channel width to 5Mhz. When I got to the other side
and I could not link with the FDD's, I logged in through someone else's
connection to the Nano at the other side and changed both side's
settings till they came up. It was awesome to at least link, but it was
not stable enough to keep them up. I'd say the link was up about 90% of
the time.

This brings me to another question. Do radios get damage by not having
an antenna connected when powering up? Say just to configure them.

I have found that happening most often on radio's that are daisy chained,
especially older ones. Luckily as most of our radio's are on the roof's of
members there is someone there to power cycle them, or a call to some one on
the other side of it to power cycle it through the on site power
controller. It also depends on how much traffic is going through them.

That confirms my feeling.  I've noticed that there was a much higher
chance it would crash if there was a lot of traffic.  Some of these
radios are fairly new and not daisy chained.  I'll work towards
replacing all critical backhaul links to UBNT or MT.

Stupid question, but is anyone selling little dummy loads (only needs
1 watt max, after all) built into the various types of antenna
connector that these radios use? I suppose you could just take a 1W
carbon resistor and solder up your own, though it would leak a bit.

(I remember the original Cantenna. This wasn't a Pringles can. It
was a dummy load, made by Heathkit, consisting of a gallon or so
metal can filled with oil that cooled some big resistors. An SO-239
was on top and it could absorb a kilowatt for a brief test, or a
smaller load for a longer time. I did watch somebody smoke one with
a serious 2-meter grounded-plate amplifier. Those 8877 tubes were
great. It was a very generous kilowatt amp.)

[WISPA] FCC Form 477 Due Sept. 1st

2010-08-31 Thread Rick Harnish
This is the final reminder that FCC Form 477 is due tomorrow. All broadband
service providers, (telecommunications, cable, and broadband over power line
providers) must report broadband services by census tract, type of
technology, and upload and download speeds on the FCC's Form 477. The Form
477 is due twice a year - in March and September.

http://www.fcc.gov/form477/

File Online

Tutorial

Technical FAQ

This is not an invitation to discuss the politics which created this law.
It is a law that Broadband Providers need to abide by. Providers that do
not abide by this law are more at risk of subsidized overbuild through
Broadband Stimulus Grants and other funded sources.

Respectfully,

Haven't seen that. There are some issues as such due to alignment,
firmware and Ack settings... that affect all links, medium range & long
range.

To get to higher end of the throughput / over the air rate, you will
need to use 40meg channel / have a nice clean connection in the -60's...

[WISPA] I-80 Dark fiber

2010-08-31 Thread Mike Hammett
Some of you already know about this, but I would like to pipe up again
about a buy in opportunity on some new dark fiber construction from
Chicago to New York. Too much for any one WISP, but maybe those of you
along the I-80 corridor (it's actually on train track right of way)
would be interested in teaming together on this effort.

I have no financial interest in this, nor do I have experience with
these operators. I'm just trying to get my fellow WISPs up to the next

I've been having quite a bit of problems with Tranzeo radios not coming back
online if I make a change to them remotely. Usualy this is with AP's or
backhaul links. I'd say about 30% of the time they will not come back after
making a change.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Does UBNT ever have that problem, or MT?

Re: [WISPA] RB1100

2010-08-31 Thread Paul Gerstenberger
I have the RB1000 and 1100s in production here as core routers (450G, 750G,
493AH's as tower-site routers, OSPF back to the core RB1x00s). Transitioning
all our customers to them (about half done). Been stable so far, aside from my
configuration screw-ups. Our only x86 device is running our user manager so we
could throw more CPU at it and keep it out of the routing path, had been
running the UM on one of the RB1000s but it was taxing the CPU.

You could combine an RB1000 or other RB/x86 with a managed switch to pipe VLANs
to more physical ports, we do that in some applications also.

Re: [WISPA] UPS with IP

2010-08-31 Thread Paul Gerstenberger
I second this. We had been using Belkin consumer UPS' because of their physical
dimensions, but we've been changing them out for APC 750 and 1500s with SNMP
where ever we reasonably can. Get ours new through Ingram Micro.

Re: [WISPA] netflix/hulu IP's

2010-08-31 Thread Tom DeReggi
Its also relevent to mention that there are multiple Akamai Server configs.
A basic server config only stores some of the Internet content in its cache.
Much larger cache servers are needed, for more effective caching.
What volume is needed to get equivlent cache performance as Comcast Verizon?

Also, hosting their servers is not necessarilyl free. For example, the most
logicial place to put it might be at one's NOC. That NOC might reside at a
Colo. At $50 per U of space, that is a residual cost that you will pay.
And how many Us are each of Akamai's 3 servers in the base configuration?
Note with 100mb for $150/month in a colo, paying teh reoccuring rack fees
would be more expensive than buying an extra 100mb of bandwidth, thus I'd
argue even for the ISP there is a minimum usage capacity before it would be
cost beneficial the the ISP as well, not just Akamai.

What some ISPs are doing is working in cooperation to put in a single Akamai
server, and then havingthe partner ISPs peer with the ISP that homes the
Akamai server, and use their aggregate bandwidth to qualify.

Where the caching is most beneficial would be caching data for server s
located on the opposite coast. For example, bypassing 70ms latency required
to get from East to West Coast.

Re: [WISPA] netflix/hulu IP's

2010-08-31 Thread Paul Gerstenberger
Our TOS is written in such that we can regulate them if they are interfering
with other customers. Our problem isn't upstream bandwidth, but the wireless
network (in places). We need to use Trango 900s in places, hard to educate
people that their using netflix ruins the internet for X number of other
customers on that AP... when many other customers on the network can use netfix
with no problems.

We do not have an enforced overage policy, but with the increased accounting
with our PPPoE changeover, we will be able to enforce soon. I'm not looking
forward to those phone calls, but it must be done...

I don't think there are any laws on it at this point. It's like
ESPN's service - the default policy is to block but there is an accept

Your network, your rules. Legally, you can probably block whatever you want.
Doing so without informing your users (customers, for ISPs) is ethically
very iffy, but legally it's probably just fine. (Not a lawyer, et cetera)

It's probably a very bad idea, but that's another discussion. :)

Thankfully, there is no "net neutrality" rule preventing this.

ISPs always block IP addresses. Spammers' address blocks, and ISPs
who tolerate spammers, and ISPs who tolerate ISPs who tolerate
spammers, are routinely blocked. As others might be. Shoot first,
ask questions later -- this is the Mutually Assured Destruction rule
that keeps the Internet from collapsing. And which the neuts have no
klew about.

This is one reason why ISPs are not common carriers. Providing
"information service" (legal term in the US) means that you are not
carrying stuff blindly, though you don't have full editorial control.

So yes, a web-browsing and email only service is perfectly
legal. Verizon Wireless sells just such a plan, in fact; it's
basically mandatory with Blackberries. "Full" (but not quite
neutral) Internet access, as used with Droids, costs more.

limited to 256k. I anticipate a phone call shortly.

Many radios can be damaged by transmitting with no load. You have to
look up each one. It's always safer to have either a dummy load or
antenna connected.

Re: [WISPA] netflix/hulu IP's

2010-08-31 Thread Paul Gerstenberger
When I googled the issue some months back, I saw a post about blocking the IP
for the netflix DRM server. That would resolve most the issues by preventing
the DRM authentication, and as a result, the movie from streaming. But I
couldn't get it didn't work reliably. Maybe time to revisit that approach.

I don't want to block the netflix website of course, I just want people to get
their movies via DVD the way they used to! And I only really want to block
streaming on the segments of the network that simply can't support it.

Re: [WISPA] netflix/hulu IP's

2010-08-31 Thread Tom DeReggi
OK, so should we be doing DNS redirecting.

Redirect "hulu.com" to "allowvideo.com" for $9.95 Shopping Cart item.

Alacart content?

Its no different than Microsoft Windows XP, being allowed to bundle
Iexplorer and MSN with WindowsOS, as long as they included signup links for
downloading and subscribing to NetScape and one ro two other Big Internet
Providers.

As long as its not discriminatory Make sure to include an Allow Item for
EVERY Video Provider you can think of Example

Welcome to Allow Video.com Shopping Cart.
1. Enable Hulu $9.95
2. Enable NetFlix $9.95
3. Enable GoogleTV $9.95
4. Enable ESPN360 $9.95 (Note... would redirect to third party ISP
partnering with your ISP able to deliver an ESPN360 compatible IP or cached
data :-)
5. Enable MYISP TV (Note: charge for access to your own Video services that
you self host/offer, so its availble accross other ISPs also from this site,
and so non-discriminary)

Disclaimer: This site/fee allows access to reach the above video provider
sites. Access to enter and obtain the site's offered services and content is
not covered by this fee. Additional subscription fees may be required
directly by the Video content provider. View their sites for their fees,
terms and conditions..

So.
Comcast my video access provider charges consumers $9.95 for HBO and $9.95
more for Showtime alacart, why cant I as the Internet Access provider charge
my subs the same?

The problem is NOT charging for content. The problem is not allowing some to
buy access to content. The problem is not allowing all to carry or resell
the content.

The facts are...Verizon and Comcasts wont charge for content, if we are
allowed to carry content and we choose to not charge for it. If we charge
more than the market will bear, consumers will leave us, and that keeps us
honeset and fair. Its already established that Consumers have been willing
to pay for content.

If the video content providers complain, tell them you'll give them a
revenue share if they send you a caching server for you to host::-)

I don't think there are any laws on it at this point. It's like
ESPN's service - the default policy is to block but there is an accept
policy for those that pay.

Why not bandwidth shape them down to something reasonable? I find
1.1~1.2mbit for netflix and it looks fine. they will each 5mbit if you

If you mean that they're abusing your service, you'll have to clarify
what that means - the customer pays for bits to be delivered, and you're
delivering them. If you sell an "unlimited" service, them's the breaks.
If you bill by usage, just send them their next bill showing all the

Re: [WISPA] Classified Ads

2010-08-31 Thread Rick Harnish
I need some page layout help on the classified section. Anyone good with
WordPress and PHP give me a shout. I want the ads to show at the top of the
page instead of the bottom and thus far, the forum has been little help to
me.

Thanks,

Re: [WISPA] Tranzeo lockups

2010-08-31 Thread Matt Larsen - Lists
If you are using Tranzeo TR5a, 49a or AP6000 series radios running in
PtP mode on an all bridged network, they will lock up. Newer firmware
helps, but does not completely resolve this problem. I ran in to this
very problem recently while troubleshooting a client's network.

It may not be the perfect solution, but one thing you could do that is
quick an simple is install some of the Digital Loggers auto-ping/reboot
devices at any site where you have a Tranzeo backhaul. Turn on the
autoping to test for the opposite side of the link and you won't have to
make any more drives.

Re: [WISPA] Suggestions for high bandwidth @ 25 miles.

2010-08-31 Thread MDK
As the distances go up, the longer it takes for the packet to be transmitted
from one point to another, and the round trip time grows, which reduces the
throughput.

My experience is, that it would be all but impossible to do two parallel
links in 5 ghz with UBNT stuff, as the antennas are not sufficiently
isolated from each other, and despite being on channels that don't overlap,
they still seem to have issues from strong nearby signals. And that would
be even more true, using 40 mhz channels, as the spectrum it's "listening"
to is so much wider.

Perhaps my early hardware hasn't the selectivity of later, but I haven't
heard there's significant differences.

It was really my first thought, but so far I don't see it as viable unless
somehow I can physically isolate the two links so they don't hear the closer
transmitter.

That doesn't sound right to me...radio waves travel at the speed of
light. There is some round trip time for internal electronics
processing, but usually what happens is that on further links the
radio's have to go to a more robust modulation scheme such as QPSK
rather them QAM so you can't transmit as much info. Of course to
compensate for that you can increase the frequency being used, higher
power, etc.

Good idea.

All my models fail. I simply can't charge enough to justify it. The
lack of spectrum is the limiter.

I beg to differ with this logic, applying to UBNT only... While
generically it is true about the separation... if your logic were true
about in-sufficient isolation... then we would not be able to operate a
full POP, where there are three Sector Panels and a 2ft Dish, all within
the same 10-20ft of each other, all running Rocket M5's, all on
different channels.

Just as an FYI folks,

After seeing this thread I sent it to the Tranzeo guys and they taking a
look at it. Please do, when you encounter issues such as these, report
them to your vendor (regardless of brand). Getting a record, finding
trends, etc. is the only way a vendor can uncover issues, then do root
cause analysis and create fixes as necessary.

I appreciate the value of seeking out list advice, but please remember
to give your vendor a head's up too. Matt, et al, thanks for offering
your advice. I passed those along as well.

Cheers,

If you are using Tranzeo TR5a, 49a or AP6000 series radios running in
PtP mode on an all bridged network, they will lock up. Newer firmware
helps, but does not completely resolve this problem. I ran in to this
very problem recently while troubleshooting a client's network.

It may not be the perfect solution, but one thing you could do that is
quick an simple is install some of the Digital Loggers auto-ping/reboot
devices at any site where you have a Tranzeo backhaul. Turn on the
autoping to test for the opposite side of the link and you won't have to
make any more drives.

Re: [WISPA] netflix/hulu IP's

2010-08-31 Thread Jeromie Reeves
Yea hulu is hungry. Netflix has a much better codec. I would love it
if WISPA could work some kind of deal with netflix so that we could
offer netflix for 'free' with a specific package. If they charge 8.99
I can see some kind of package deal along with one of the caching
server setups. With the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 support most of my users
would not even need a pc or other STB device. If my cost was in the 3
to 5$ range I know I would have to beat them off with a stick and
would naturally only be packaged with the correct accounts. Add in the
correct voip setup (still on the look out for a good rebrandable voip)
and it would be a good triple.

Haven't seen that. There are some issues as such due to alignment,

To get to higher end of the throughput / over the air rate, you will
need to use 40meg channel / have a nice clean connection in the -60's...

Haven't seen that. There are some issues as such due to alignment,
firmware and Ack settings... that affect all links, medium range & long
 range.

To get to higher end of the throughput / over the air rate, you will
need to use 40meg channel / have a nice clean connection in the -60's...

Yeah, They got back to me today. Said over the last 30 days we have a 9Mb/s

Emailed Akamai last night. Got a response back today saying we're pulling
an average of 19mbps from them, and do not meet the minimum requirement of
75mbps required to qualify for the Accelerated Network Partner program.

Re: [WISPA] netflix/hulu IP's

2010-08-31 Thread Nick Olsen
I think the big thing here is the way they do video. Hulu, has like 3 quality
settings. And you set them. Atleast with the desktop app, The flash on the
pages will try to autoselect. Netflix is much more in depth. It just picks what
works, With the ability to go WAY down on bitrate. When I had a netflix
account, It could pull as little as like 200-300 K and the video was about as
good as what you got out of the first camera phones. But then I've seen it jump
all the way up to like 8Mb/s to do "SD" quality. This was all on a PC, Which
only does "SD" where the consoles and set top boxes will do HD. Don't want to
even imagine what they can pull if its maxed out, And you have the capacity on
hand. I'd guess something like 15-20Mb/s

2010-08-31 Thread Jeromie Reeves
Yup I bet it could. Ive seen 2 of them at the same time max out a 15mbit
pipe. That lasted about as long as it took to re-enable the bw queues.
Still a dozen or so and the eat the entire pipe and i knock em down a tad
more, but under 900kbit and it seams to choke up. After moving to Ubnt M
gear, my net feed is my bottleneck for sure these days. Looking at getting
fiber points out at the ends of the network but its not easy to get away
from that loop fee and that kills it for now.

Yeah, Loop fee's are the killer. On-net bandwidth is cheap bandwidth. I've seen
cogent come down to $3 per megabit.
And I've heard of Hurricane electric going as low as 75 cents per megabit. Just
got to build out to them.

fees for the fiber huts + a break in fee. I have someone who says
he can get me into a place with out much if any fee, at $20/mbit. We will
see.

Stupid question, but is anyone selling little dummy loads (only needs
1 watt max, after all) built into the various types of antenna connector
that these radios use? I suppose you could just take a 1W carbon resistor
and solder up your own, though it would leak a bit.

(I remember the original Cantenna. This wasn't a Pringles can. It was a
dummy load, made by Heathkit, consisting of a gallon or so metal can filled
with oil that cooled some big resistors. An SO-239 was on top and it could
absorb a kilowatt for a brief test, or a smaller load for a longer time. I
did watch somebody smoke one with a serious 2-meter grounded-plate
amplifier. Those 8877 tubes were great. It was a very generous kilowatt
amp.)

Re: [WISPA] UPS with IP

2010-08-31 Thread Robert West
Sadly. My last UPS I built was from parts pulled outta the
dumpster behind the local defunct Gold Star Chili Store. Salvaged the EXIT
sign. 2 6v batteries and charging/switch board.

I live a strange life.

I second this. We had been using Belkin consumer UPS' because of their
physical dimensions, but we've been changing them out for APC 750 and 1500s
with SNMP where ever we reasonably can. Get ours new through Ingram Micro.

[WISPA] Akamai / other caching servers

2010-08-31 Thread Scott Carullo
Could a squid caching server accomplish the same sort of bandwidth savings,
maybe more due to the fact it is caching ALL the content not just Akamai?
I've never use used a web cahce always had the bandwidth and the problems

Re: [WISPA] RB1100

2010-08-31 Thread Scott Carullo
The 1100 will do ospf fine but load them up with bgp 2 or more times and
they suffer. We were going to use them and we changed plans to use a
supermicro server with a 4 or 6 port NIC. The 1100 seems to be a good
tower choice because it has enough ports to handle a set of gear without
additional equipment in most cased. Add an 8 port managed switch along
with it it can handle any configuration we have had. And from our
experience there is no need to upgrade the memory unless you are doing
something you shouldn't be doing any way. We put two full feeds on one
with stock ram it fit fine.

I have the RB1000 and 1100s in production here as core routers (450G, 750G,
493AH's as tower-site routers, OSPF back to the core RB1x00s).
Transitioning all our customers to them (about half done). Been stable so
far, aside from my configuration screw-ups. Our only x86 device is running
our user manager so we could throw more CPU at it and keep it out of the
routing path, had been running the UM on one of the RB1000s but it was
taxing the CPU.

You could combine an RB1000 or other RB/x86 with a managed switch to pipe
VLANs to more physical ports, we do that in some applications also.
