Re: [ZION] Soccer Rules!
- Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I would MUCH rather watch a soccer game (or lacrosse game...or hockey game...) than watch basketball. I can't STAND basketball! -- I don't necessarily disagree with you here. That is, I don't particularly care for basketball myself. But I see it simply as being a fast-paced, higher-scoring version of soccer. The only thing I see in both sports is a bunch of people running from one side of the court or field to the other. But at least in basketball when someone shoots they usually at least hit the backboard. There are many instances (the majority) in soccer where the ball goes no where near the goal while shooting. I say if you have to have soccer, get rid of the regulation time and go straight to the penalty kicks that almost inevitably determine the outcome of the game since there are so many ties. Re: [ZION] Does anyone know?
Getting back to the original topic, I find it quite telling that not one person has mentioned the World Cup volleyball. I take that to mean that though it is called the World Cup, little if any attention is being paid to it in America. [ZION] Does anyone know?
Attempt to start new thread #4? Does anyone here even know that the World Cup volleyball tournament is being held? Here in Japan it's hard to find much else on TV right now. Seems quite silly. I mean, it isn't like we're talking about a real sport like football (the real kind, not that whimpy game more correctly known as soccer) or baseball. Oh, I suppose Japanese politics could be considered a sport of types. But the media seems to have drifted away quite quickly. Does anyone know there were parliamentary elections on Sunday? Re: [ZION] Soccer Rules!
From: John W. Redelfs [EMAIL PROTECTED] I don't feel the way you do about football, soccer and baseball. Professional football in this country cannot be played by ordinary people. They have to be giants. It is the same way with basketball: the best players are virtually freaks. But normal sized people can play soccer. -- Exactly my point. Soccer is a wimpy sport that anyone can play. Well, almost anyone. I'm so wimpy I probably couldn't play it. -- As for baseball, well... when my kids all got stuck out in right field while the coaches kid got to be pitcher I learned that baseball, softball actually, wasn't much of a sport except for a favored few. When I put my kids in soccer they all got to play their guts out every minute that they were in good enough shape to play. -- Grampa Bill never let any of us kids play sports. He thought that we wouldn't study if we were playing. I guess I showed him. I didn't study anyway. :-) At the time I wasn't too concerned about not playing sports, but now I wish I had done something. I will admit that those who play soccer seem to have a good time. I personally don't see how you can call it shooting when the kicked ball goes no where near the goal. So I will grant you a point on soccer perhaps being a fun game to play. But I think I would rather drive dull nails into my temples than to have to sit through watching a soccer match. Cousin Bill [EMAIL PROTECTED] Our country, right or wrong. [ZION] The play's the thing.
Attempt to start new thread #3. As many of you know, I reside in Japan, making my living by babysitting kids ... I know that ELF and Tom Matkin have made reference to being in various dramatic productions. I'm sure there are probably others as well. Does anyone here have any ideas on where I could find simple plays (the operative word being "simple") that these kids with little English experience could learn and perform? [ZION] A reading list
I'm sorry to rain on everyone's parade. I see that many people enjoy discussing the gospel. I do not qualify to join such discussions. I just don't have the knowledge everyone else has. So I decided to start a new thread. In the past, my efforts have had mixed results. At times I have started threads that have lasted weeks. Other times my post seems to be the only one, so I suppose it could not even be called a thread. We shall see how this one works out. Please forgive the lightheartedness. I was just wondering what everyone is reading these days. I'm currently working my way through Red Rabbit by Tom Clancy. I had decided to read the Iliad and the Odyssey, but I didn't get too far before I realized that I will need to get the Cliff Notes to go with that. My little brain just doesn't function that well. Luckily I will be heading for Savannah next month so I plan to pick it up then. I'm thinking of reading Contact by Carl Sagan next. I really enjoyed the movie, and I can't imagine anyone having seen that movie without being convinced that there is life out there beyond the confines of the earth. So does anyone care to share what they are reading these days? Or their thoughts on life in outer space? I'm kind of angry at myself. Astute readers will notice that I have a new e-mail address. I also have a new computer. I downloaded the SETI program, but when I tried to add on to my previous SETI total they asked for my password. I have no idea, and since they only send the password to the old address (which has since been cancelled), I'm out of luck. I had over 400 completed work units, and had to start over. I'm at about 90 now. One good thing, my new computer whips through those work units between two and three times as fast as my old computer. Anyway, I ask again, what are you guys reading? Re: [ZION] Election Day
Don't forget to vote early and vote often. Till -- My absentee ballot was sent over a week ago. Unfortuately, I will have no real say in who becomes mayor of the fair city of Savannah. There will almost definitely be a run-off and Georgia law (or perhaps Chatham County, but probably Georgia) requires all absentee ballots to be in by the end of election day. Since the run-off will be held only two weeks after the general election, I doubt very seriously that Savannah will have its ballots ready to be mailed in time to get to me for me to get it back in time for the run-off. Or something like that. I don't particularly feel like going back to make sure my grammar matches up. Hope you guys know what I'm trying to say. Re: Voting and parties (was Re: [ZION] Cuba and Castro)
At some point in the past, Mark (and Marc) wrote: Marc: In the U.S. every voter registers for a party (or as an independent -- as I recall the rules vary considerably from Mark: What? You mean to say that you cannot vote in the US unless you register your preference? Is that true? And if it is, what's the point of it? Since your vote is secret, why register a preference? Cousin Bill tries to explain: Different states have different rules for registering to vote. No state (that I am aware of) requires you to register a party in order to vote in general elections, such as those that are coming up in a couple of weeks. Party registration is required by some states in order to vote in primary elections (when choosing the nominees for each party for each office). Georgia, where I am registered to vote, does not require prior registration of party. On the date of the primary elections (or in my case, when requesting an absentee ballot) you state which party's primary you wish to vote in and you are given a ballot for that party. In Presidential election years, Georgia holds two primaries. One for the presidency and one for other offices. In Georgia you can opt to vote in the Democratic primary for president, and then a few months later vote in the Republican primary without any trouble. (Or vice versa) But then when the general election roles around, no one asks party preferences and one is allowed to vote however one chooses. Mark: As to voting or supporting a party: I'm not sure that I follow what Elder Jensen was saying. What's the point of voting for a party if you don't accept their policies? The Brethren have always told us to study the issues and then support the candidate that best represents our interests or who supports the issues we believe in. If a candidate supports things that we are opposed to, then why would we vote for him or her? Okay, granted, probably every candidate supports some things that we are opposed to, but if a candidate supports many things we strongly oppose, why would we vote for him or her? Cousin Bill: I think there is a problem with definitions here. Someone (John?) wrote that he thought it was impossible to be a good Mormon and a good Democrat. Someone else (Marc?) wrote that Elder Jensen said differently. This is where the definitions come in. My definition of a good Democrat is someone who agrees with and supports the party platform, party leaders and office holders. By using this definition, I believe it is impossible to be a good Mormon and a good Democrat, because the party platform, leaders and office holders hold to many planks that are against what is taught by the church. But maybe there is a different definition of being a good Democrat that others use. If one defines a good Democrat as being someone who works within the party to bring about a better platform, select better leaders and elect better office holders (those that would agree with church teachings), then it would be possible to be a good Mormon and a good Democrat. Re: [ZION] Voting and parties (was Re: Cuba and Castro)
At some point in the past, Stephen wrote: To make sure the Democrats in an area don't band together and elect a Republican candidate who can't possibly win the general election, and vice versa. - This happens, I'm sure. I mentioned before that this is the way things are done in Georgia. Whenever someone loses a primary, they inevitably use this as an excuse for losing. It doesn't make much sense, though, when both parties are holding primaries. I have mainly voted in Republican primaries. Off hand, I don't recall ever voting in a Democratic primary, but I wouldn't deny it. Before I became of voting age, I understand that practically everything in Georgia was determined at the Democratic primary because the Republican party didn't have much of a chance at anything. That is no longer the case, though Democrats still maintain a firm grip on a lot of offices. BTW, I have sent in my absentee ballot. I have no idea whether it will actually be counted or not. There were many offices in which I voted for neither the Democrat or Republican candidate. I am a firm believer in voting for who you think is best, not who you think will win. That includes the liberal use of write-in voting. (I have voted for Grampa Bill many times in the past, and for two offices this time around. Gramma Letty, too, for that matter.) [ZION] United Nations
The following article makes an argument against the United Nations that, thought I had never heard before, makes perfect sense, and leads me to wonder why I had never heard it before. (I'm also slightly embarrassed that I had never thought of it before.) United Nations James Humes Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002 http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2002/10/22/230948.shtml The argument in a nutshell: When did the United Nations become the supreme moral authority of the world? One might advance such a proposition if most of the organization were represented by democratic governments, but that is not the case. Of the 191 nations in the United Nations only about 40 percent (85 countries) are democratic societies that enjoy political rights and civil liberties. The rest are either controlled by dictators or by a one-party government. [ZION] And a little on the lighter side...
Clinton aide slams Pentagon's UFO secrecy By Richard Stenger CNN Tuesday, October 22, 2002 Posted: 3:09 PM EDT (1909 GMT) http://www.cnn.com/2002/TECH/space/10/22/ufo.records/index.html [A] former White House chief of staff and an international investigative journalist want to know what the Pentagon knows, calling on it to release classified files about that and other incidents involving unidentified flying objects, or UFOs. It is time for the government to declassify records that are more than 25 years old and to provide scientists with data that will assist in determining the real nature of this phenomenon, ex-Clinton aide John Podesta said Tuesday. Re: [ZION] Bunny Boots and Mukluks
At some point in the past, John wrote: Here in Alaska bunny boots and mukluks are not the same thing. During the two years we lived in Kotzebue in the arctic, we learned the difference between mukluks and bunny boots. Mukluks are made from animal furs and are the traditional dress of the Inupiat. They keep your feet warm down to many degrees below zero. Bunny boots are a rubber and plastic monstrosity created in a white man's factory, providing a perfect vapor barrier, and keep the feet warm to an even lower temperature than mukluks. People who work outside in minus 25 to minus 50 degree temperatures for any length of time need to wear bunny boots. They are funny looking, but they are the only thing that will keep the feet warm in some conditions. Do you know of a store that will sell and ship overseas (like, say, to Japan)? I lost my good pair of boots to a septic tank accident and haven't been able to find any since. Bill Lewis AKA Cousin Bill [EMAIL PROTECTED] Guess what! I'm published! RE: [ZION] Developed Story
At some point in the past, Sandy wrote of his experience with the INS. Yes, I remember going through that with Shuko. However, we had a rather pleasant experience. There was only one time that the lady who did the interview threw us a zinger. She asked why we didn't do the paperwork in Japan. I told her that we were going to come right back to America after the wedding so we didn't have the time. Not much else went wrong. Unfortunately, we never got back to take off conditional status. By that time we were back in Japan. :-( Maybe some time in the future.
