[Zope-dev] new wiki.zope.org editor login

2011-10-24 Thread Simon Michael
Hey all.. the shared login for wiki.zope.org editing has been discovered by a
spammer, so I've changed the password. The
login is now zope, edit0r. See the message below for more context.

Best,
-Simon

In 2011/05 I wrote:
  Dear all,

edit spam across the wiki.zope.org wikis, gradually increasing over
the years, has reached multiple incidents per day, multiple days per
month. Current cleanup procedures take too much time (and are not 100%
thorough - spam remains in history) and I don't want to spend time
developing cleverer defenses. Therefore, from today making changes on
any of the wiki.zope.org wikis requires authentication (a zwiki
username cookie is no longer enough.)

This marks the transition of our wikis from those early, lowest-
possible-barrier-to-entry wiki days, to the modern era of mandatory
  access control. :-/

Since there is no member management software in place to allow you to
self-register, to get a login you'll need to either

  - - ask an admin to make one for you. The current wiki.zope.org admin
users are: Simon Michael, Andreas Jung, Baiju Muthukadan, Sascha
Welter, Michael Haubenwallner, Fred Drake, Jim Fulton, Ken Manheimer,
  Kevin Teague.

  - - use this generic login: zope, zope. The downside of using this a lot
is that edit history will become less useful.

Also, on wikis using the default skin (all but the zope3 wiki), to
trigger a login prompt you'll need to manually visit some restricted
url. Eg append /editform to any page, like so:
  http://wiki.zope.org/zope2/Zope2Wiki/editform

I hope this will stop the spam, and not inconvenience editors too
much. Please let me know if you have authenticated and still can't edit.

If you are interested in improving this setup, doing any other
maintenance of the zope wikis, or taking over as zope wiki czar -
please step forward! I'd be happy to mentor and provide all needed
  support.

  Best,
  - -Simon

[Zope-dev] zope 3 wiki update

2011-07-07 Thread Simon Michael
I've made the zope 3 wiki's skin consistent with the other wikis,
leaving the pond design for sole use of the foundation site.
I also did a little front page cleanup and updated the intro -
corrections welcome.

Until some cache expires or can be flushed/restarted by Jens, you might
see a messed up display caused by the old stylesheet
(http://wiki.zope.org/Zope3Wiki/stylesheet). If so, just shift-reload.

Re: [Zope-dev] Defining Zope 3.

2009-04-16 Thread Simon Michael
This message seems like a reasonable start to me: Zope 3 has become
focused on supporting frameworks and applications, rather than trying
to be one itself. It is now called the Zope Toolkit. Parts of it are
used by Zope 2, Plone, Grok, Repoze.bfg, and by many other different
 applications and frameworks.

I also like this message because it is simple and positive enough for everyone
inside and outside the dev community to
understand and buy into.

Insiders know that the Toolkit going forward will be much more focussed than
old Zope 3 was, but outsiders don't need
those details; outsiders certainly won't understand subtle intra-project
renamings and dyings. If some of those details
are positive selling points, they should appear in the official release notes
and announcements.

I'm thinking about the case where a request generates a redirect and

Do you know if there are any facilities for this already in ZPublisher ?

Not *just* social. I would say there seem to be
social/structural/technical/perceptual reasons why such a thing simply
cannot exist at ZC-managed zope.org right now. So, while zope.org would
be the ideal url (and I tried to nudge zope.org in this direction for
years without coming across as a zealot) I think there are actually some
advantages to having a slightly separate docs site. More modular, scales
better. Of course the more integration and interlinking the better.

Constructively-intended zope.org criticism: zope.org is the zope
community's biggest documentation asset. And yet at this point it is
indeed also a big fat piano sitting on the windpipe of zope
documentation, and hence the zope community itself.

This is despite the best of intentions on all sides. To say (as Stephan
has) that it's due to lack of volunteers is wrong. Many of us have
tried. Perhaps ZC expects more from a volunteer than is realistic.
Compare with other successful successful open source projects.

[Zope-dev] Re: Core Dump (Zope 2.7, Python 2.3.3, FreeBSD 4.5)

2004-02-18 Thread Simon Michael
It does sound suspiciously like the freebsd python issue. What do you
get in the event log when python crashes ? Is it SIGSEGV(11)/SIGBUS(10)
or whatever ?

This tends not to get triggered with a zeo debug prompt, for whatever
reason.

To find out, you could:

- rebuild python with a very large stack - 1Mb *should* be enough

- rebuild python with debugging symbols, then run python/zope with gdb
and see what the stack trace says when it crashes.

- sprinkle the zope code with log statements until you narrow down where
the crash is happening. If it's the stack thing, it's probably in a call
to the re module.

Since then, as a temporary measure I set the no robots meta header in
standard_wiki_header. Also, I cleaned up various link holes that would
lead to infinite urls, using page_url() and wiki_url(). Finally, all wiki
links were changed to use absolute urls (now optional). These things
should help, and in fact it should be safe to allow google into a modern

Back to the original poster: yes, to avoid getting hammered by search

infinite urls. This may not be as hard as you think. Hackers can make up
urls, but search engines don't (yet).

[Zope-dev] help! I've broken refresh

And life is just not the same without it!

I had auto refresh working fine until recently. Today, if I change a
py file I see the pyc file being regenerated, but only when I do a
manual refresh. And I do not see the effect of the changes until I do
a full zope restart.

FWIW, several things happened lately:

- I cleaned out some shadowed older product versions from
/usr/lib/zope/lib/python/Products

- I experimented with ZEO (but I'm not running it now), and

- I rearranged the product quite a lot. __init__.py was changed,
modules were split up, imports moved around, and there is a new
sub-package tests which also contains a refresh.txt.

GPL is not actually in effect.

I'm not sure I'd use those words - the license is certainly fully in

One of the consequences being that someone re-distributing zope
zwiki together, under their default licenses, is technically in
violation right now, I think we are all agreeing.

I'm not aware of anyone doing this right now, though there was a zwiki
package for Debian GNU/linux at one point. Would Debian be in
violation shipping both zope zwiki packages on a cd ? If they
thought so, sooner or later one or the other would get dropped from
the distribution. Unfortunate and detrimental to both zwiki and zope.
In principle this would apply to all linux distributions.

Does this serve as an example of a problem with the current situation
for DC management ?

Another would be the fact that DC's own options are limited if it (DC)
ever had the desire to distribute or sell something leveraging
zwiki. Sure, it could convince me that LGPL makes better sense, or
offer me a large sum of money to draw up a special alternate license
(hey, on the double :-). But this would have to be repeated with each
developer where the situation arose.

Probably better to update the ZPL to solve this problem in one sweep,
ensure that zope is participating fully within the preeminent sphere
of software creativity, and earn a whole bunch of new support from the
world developer community.

And python did it.

And there's no downside to making yourself GPL-compatible that I can
think of.

Explain why it's important to you and why you can't get by on the
current situation. You can send them directly or I can forward emails
 to the management.

Thanks Shane, please forward. DC management, please consider yourself
lobbied - I'd like to encourage you to review the situation and
consider making some adjustments to zope's license, or join our
discussion here.

Best regards
-Simon

Technically yes, although I like to think that the product developers
implicitly grant redistribution permission by attempting to apply the
 GPL.

I'm not sure that would be a valid assumption. Speaking for myself, it
wasn't my particular intention to unconditionally grant that
permission given the licenses as they stand. I mean, I didn't intend
that zwiki's GPL be some kind of watered-down GPL. :)

I think you're right. The reaction to the Python license becoming GPL
compatible wasn't as enthusiastic as I expected, though.

Well, I'm guessing there was a shout of joy around the world - it made
my day. I think many of us then said well thank god for some sanity
and got on with the productive work that needed doing. Unfortunately
the positive reactions are less apparent than the kind we have when
disaster is looming.

If someone wrote a GPL-covered program specifically for Zope, you
are pretty safe taking that as implicit permission to combine it

Now here, I have to assume RMS is using combine above to mean

I hope I'm right ? If combine included install zwiki on your zope

Naturally it has led to complications.

[Zope-dev] zwiki ZUnit support added

2000-11-22 Thread Simon Michael

This is great, Lalo! Thanks.

I checked in ZUnit support to ZWiki-cvs, and the first couple of unit
tests. Suddenly, I feel all Extreme!

FWIW, here's how I run the tests. I made a TestRunner called
ZWikiTests, pointing to "Products.ZWiki.TestSuite". I have these rules
in a makefile:

  unit-test test:
@wget -nv
'http://username:password@localhost:port/ZWikiTests/manage_startTests' -O
TESTOUTPUT
@cat TESTOUTPUT

  refresh:
@wget --spider -nv

After making some changes to the product files, I

 make refresh test
200 OK

14:03:17
URL:http://username:password@localhost:port/ZWikiTests/manage_startTests [34] -
"TESTOUTPUT" [1]
 .
.
 .

Time: 1.329s

OK (3 tests)

This rocks. In fact, as I ran the above it caught a typo in
ZWiki/Tests.py which otherwise you all would have had to deal with.

[Zope-dev] Re: question re problem adding zwiki webs

2000-11-10 Thread Simon Michael

Re this error when adding a zwiki web:

  Error Type: KeyError
  Error Value: H?v`H?v$y_?-006412673360557
  Content-Disposition: form-data; name="wiki_type" basic

Tony McDonald [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
It is a Mac actually. IE 5.0. I've just asked a colleague to try
creating a ZWikiWeb on his PC and it's worked fine!

I do have other problems with IE 5.0 in that it has a limit on the
number of things I can 'copy' and 'paste' - in general I don't bother
doing it and export and reimport folders etc. I'd really like to know
why it's behaving like that, I do have a *lot* of cookies in my IE and
have also heard that the sequence in which HTTP headers are sent to IE
can be an issue to (sigh)

Thanks, that helps a lot! To narrow it down, if not to solve it :(

It does appear that the problem is not with zwiki, but that HTTP form
data headers are being sent in some unusual format and confusing
zope. I wonder if you experience mac-IE-specific problems with other
zope forms or forms in general. I suppose it could be related to your
cut/paste problems.

I'm cc'ing the list, perhaps someone knows more.

Cheers,
-Simon

[Zope-dev] another debugging howto, and a question

2000-11-02 Thread Simon Michael

Here are some draft howto-like things some might find helpful
(improvements welcome) :

http://zwiki.org/ZopeDebuggingRoadmap
http://zwiki.org/HowToDebugZopeInEmacs

and a burning question:

how can I invoke zserver such that I will get the interactive debug
prompt ? I'd like to have my breakpoints trigger when I access the
server in the normal way with a web browser, poke around, let it run
on and do it again. I was able to do this in the past and it's useful.

Many thanks!

[Zope-dev] zwiki 0.7.0 bugfix

2000-11-02 Thread Simon Michael

this should resolve a problem with the recent release. From
http://zwiki.org/FrontPageNews:

"The original (pre-0.7.0) problem was this: in dtml modes, initial
lines containing : followed by a blank line were not rendered (because
they were considered to be http headers).

The symptoms of my interim fix in 0.7.0 are this: ^M's appear at the
beginning of pages and blank lines sometimes get eaten.

I think I have a suitably ugly workaround now. It's running here and
available in http://zwiki.org/zwikidir/releases/ZWiki-0.7.1rc3.tgz,
please try it out."

[Zope-dev] ZWiki 0.7.0 release candidate (was Re: Cruft on dev.zope.org)

2000-10-30 Thread Simon Michael

He 8-) ... sounds like a good time to mention the below
(and Ken, your new feature priorities look very close to mine):

I have uploaded a release candidate:
http://zwiki.org/zwikidir/releases/ZWiki-0.7.0.tgz .

Please hammer on it if you can - tomorrow is an auspicious date for
release!

ZWiki 0.7.0 2000-10-31 "Halloween!"

* cookie-based user options, including edit form size, timezone,
bookmarks and wikiwikiweb-style username (help from Phil Armstrong)

* ZWiki is now zope 2.2-compatible (Garth Kidd) and -requiring,
and benefits from the 2.2 security model. Executable dtml pages
now run with those permissions that are common to both the
page-viewing user and the wiki web's owner. Set the folder's
owner to limit the permissions of executable pages.

* incorporated updated Chris Withers' product for creating wiki webs

* added streamlined "hierarchal2" wiki style other layout tweaks

* wikiwikiweb-style late page creation

* added simple javascript-disabling code

* made paths work with virtual hosting again (Evan Simpson)

* fixed unreliable ! line protection in structuredtext modes

* fixed unreliable remote wiki links in classicwiki mode

* more permissive remote wiki link regexps (Geoff Gardiner)

* "with this" dtml kludge no longer needed

* added built-in defaults for all dtml methods

* simpler, more consistent urls api

* code refactoring/cleanups, other misc. bugfixes

It's dark.. and the witching hour is near. Don't be afraid.. :)

[Zope-dev] Flat Database/ZPatterns api, performance ?

2000-10-26 Thread Simon Michael

Flat Database (was ListMate) is just what I need to whip up an
interface for non-technical administrators - thanks. So I migrated two
data tables ("workshops" "registrations") from gadfly to flatdb
instances using the CSV import feature, and the admin interface is
working fine.

I'm having a hard time, though, figuring out how to access the data
programmatically. I scavenged the docs (zpatterns wiki very helpful,
as far as it went; not much available for flatdb), searched the lists
(nothing) and grovelled around in the code. I'd appreciate any
comments or advice on the following.

1. how can I look up a row in the table by column value, other than
searching the whole table: ?

  dtml-in "workshops.entryValues()"
  dtml-if "getProperty('col_workshopid') == workshop"
  dtml-var "getProperty('col_description')"
  /dtml-if
  /dtml-in

2. how can I add an entry to a table ? I tried this:

  dtml-let entry="registrations.manage_addEntry()"
  dtml-call "entry.manage_addProperty('col_workshopid','string','TEST')"
  dtml-call "entry.manage_addProperty('col_firstname','string','TEST')"
  dtml-call "entry.manage_addProperty('col_lastname','string','TEST')"
  ...
  /dtml-let

and it seems to create a number of spurious rows with only the first
field set. This didn't work either:

  dtml-call "registrations.manage_addEntry().manage_changeProperties(
  col_workshopid='TEST', col_firstname='TEST', col_lastname='TEST', ... )"

3. displaying table contents seems quite slow. On this P100 with 48Mb
ram doing nothing but zope, no load and generally snappy, generating
the 50-row, 20-column registrations table listing takes 15
seconds. Any ideas about where this comes from ?

4. this is my first encounter with the mighty zpatterns. I wonder how
one might add a thing (data plugin ?) so that FlatDb could read the
data out of zgadfly or something faster, instead of migrating it as I
did ?

Many thanks!

I think everyone agees about that, but at least some of the participants in

 different modes of discussion _at_the_same_time_.

Re: [Zope-dev] I feel your Wiki Pain ;-)

2000-09-22 Thread Simon Michael

I like where you're going with this Martijn.

Spurred on by your concrete examples, how about this: every wiki page
has an email address and functions as a "mailing list". Eg: I could
subscribe or send edits to

ZWikiWeb:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
StructuredTextWiki:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (defaults to the front page)

A zwikiweb could be seen as a hierarchy of very lightweight mail
lists. When I subscribe to a page(list), I would also receive
edits(mail) to its child pages(lists) by default.

Implementation: a sufficiently smart mail server, or (better?) build
on the "mail into zope" project for an all-zope solution. Eg: I might
install and configure the "ZWikiMail" product, and suddenly my
existing wikis are mail-enabled..

Comments ?

I wonder what Simon Michael is up to nowdays?

I have been visiting family.. I'll be back in the US next week.

Great thread here. I also feel this pain, grovelling around between
wiki, mailing list, newsgroup, message board, etc.

I wonder if we should expose all messages, edits and annotations in
some RSS/RDF-like format, for easier syncing/monitoring/indexing of
the different forums and to faciliate alternate UIs.
