I forgot our Volunteer policy from my previous email:

Volunteers

A volunteer is anyone who performs a task at the direction of and on behalf of 
the college, without compensation or expectation of compensation. Volunteers 
are not considered employees of the college.

Volunteers are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all 
proprietary or privileged information to which they are exposed while serving 
as a volunteer. Failure to do so may result in termination of the volunteer 
relationship with the college or another corrective action.

Volunteers Under Age 18
The recommended age for volunteers is 18 or over; exceptions may be made for 16 
or 17-year olds in certain cases, with the written permission of a parent or 
guardian.

Criminal Background Checks
Wake Tech will conduct criminal background checks on all volunteers. Credit 
reports will also be obtained for volunteers with access to cash, checks, 
credit card transactions, or bank account information.

Our leave policy practices depend on the employment classification and the
relevant contract, of which there are 7.  For Administrative Professional
Staff, various leaves are described here:

  This is the only non-union group, so it is the easiest to access.  The
manual covers sick, FMLA, bereavement, Jury and other leave options.

Our Student Employment policy is posted here:

through our Financial Aid office, and they need to be very involved if you
process federal financial aid.

We do not have a policy for volunteers, but we do have a legal agreement
that must be completed:

Lessons learned:  We are in the process of converting our policies into our new 
template. See above Benefits and Leave Accounting policies. It is very hard to 
research personnel policies and in the process of converting the policies, we 
are trying to update the personnel policies and SOMEHOW they keep getting stuck 
along the way. Even when people say researching and updating the policy is 
their priority - it's not and it gets put on the back burner so I did all of 
the research for the benefits policy myself (even though I am not in HR). It 
got done a lot faster that way. I was able to send them a draft with benefits 
that were red-lined that were outdated and questions already in there to speed 
the process up. I've updated personnel and non-personnel policies and the 
personnel policies take the longest - even when they are cut and dry.

Also, I spoke with our HR VP ahead of time about whether we could eliminate our 
Employee Handbook hardcopy a few years ago (and our General Counsel) to make 
sure there were no reasons we actually needed it. I was assured we didn't and 
we have been running an electronic handbook for the past few years, but I still 
get questions every few months "Why don't we have a hardcopy of the Employee 
Handbook".  For some reason people still want to hold on to a copy of personnel 
policies. It's frustrating to keep trying to convince people it's a waste of 
time to update policies on the web and in print (if there is not a legal reason 
for both).
