workbench I have a gps distribution amplifier with several outputs that I
can hook gps receivers with coax cables to. For testing things with patch
antennas, I use a passive gps patch to couple the signal into the device.

Hmm... this sure doesn't match my experience with "Timmies". But again,
I'm not a coffee drinker, and I have a slight addiction to timbits.
Thankfully they're only available north of the border.

I have a wifi one that I got a few months ago for a fair bit more ($79 if I
remember right)., Looks very similar but with a battery pack and wifi
transmitter on one end. I've used it a couple of times since then - the
most useful was to figure out why the vacuum kept clogging up even after
I wanted to reply to an email or two here, but didn't know which one - This
seems as good of an email to reply to as any, since Mark makes exactly the
correct points.
Let me show with visuals what the problem actually is
Without any additional introduction, let's start with this picture:
Let's talk about each of these status.
Used pulses are pulses which were received from the GPS and a pulse was
generated for. These should be happening once per second, no more no
less. If you were to write down (or clear) them at an exact time, then

Ok, I popped the lid here... after realizing it's able to be opened withoud
desoldering. I take it back... There are several 33.2 Ohm resistors which
are wired suspiciously like heaters This now is starting to make some
sense.
