Re: looking four q9 action game
Re: looking four q9 action game Not to dispute what you've said, because there was an update recently, but I'd hardly call a version 3.2 to 3.3 a major update, now if they'd released version 4.0, then I'd call it a major update. Now that you mention it I do believe the new game is a fantasy role playing game and those things don't happen overnight. Just look at what happened to Entombed, for the longest time there was rumor of a version 2 and there was even an alpha floating around for a while, but the web site has had version 1.20j as the official release for about five years now. Personally I think that development on Entombed died out long ago.Check your PM URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=323965#p323965 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
Re: developers and empty promises
Re: developers and empty promises I never said that I was promised any additional chapters for those games. Although disappointing, I'm fine with only getting the first chapter and nothing more. What annoys and upsets me is when the developers neglect to tell you that you are only getting the first chapter, you only learn that when the game ends rather abruptly. Blindside is still being sold and there is no mention anywhere that you are buying episode 1 of a multi part story, nor that the rest of the story isn't forthcoming. And even though they are no longer being sold except maybe to get rid of remaining stock, there is no mention anywhere that Chillingham and Time Adventures are only the first part of a story that now will never be finished.Omitting that information is just as much a deception as a out right lie is. It's still a deception to get your money, because if they came right out and told you that you would only be getting part 1 and that the rest of the story would nev er be produced, would you buy it?And then there are games like Steam Punk Neverland and Watch Tower Chronicles, that developer even went so far as to collect money for preorders for those games, and two years later, the games still haven't been released and the developer is still collecting, or at least asking for, preorders! While I agree that taking the route of being patient and watching what develops as I am doing with Code 7 is the best course. There are too many examples of things going way south.I have downloaded the prelude for Code 7 and will be trying it out later today, but I'm not going to order the rest of the episodes until they are ready for immediate delivery. Re: New Playable Action Side scroller: Icey
Re: New Playable Action Side scroller: Icey Life as a blind person is challenging enough without choosing to try to use something that isn't designed to be accessible.I don't shut myself out of things not designed for the vision impaired, I have quite a few items and programs not designed to be accessible and have figured out how to use them. The primary reason I don't use Steam besides the fact that it more often than not is the source of the problem when games running under them don't work as they should, it's Valves attitude towards the vision impaired community by refusing to actively participate in making Steam accessible. That's a terrible attitude and I for one am not going to encourage it by patronizing them. No, I'll take my money somewhere else where they are more open minded and willing to be inclusive of everybody regardless of their abilities or handicaps. A good example is EA. They are at least willing to explore what they can do to make some of their games more accessible. Re: developers and empty promises
Re: developers and empty promises I see this whole debate in three or four flavors.1. Developers who want to include the visually impaired among their customers and make every effort to make their products accessible to them. The accessibility components of the product may or may not be in place when the product is launched, but if the developer is serious about their commitments, they eventually will be, all it takes is some patience.2. Developers who's products aren't accessible to the visually impaired, but the developer is willing to consider making their products accessible in future releases. Again some patience is needed, time will tell just how serious the developer is in including us in their product designs. Some developers will follow through, some won't. The best way to deal with these is to vote with your wallet by supporting those developers that are willing to add accessibility into their product designs, and boycott those who won't.3. Developers who simply r efuse to consider making any changes at all or give any consideration to making their products accessible. While patience won't resolve this situation, neither will verbally abusing the developer, that will just make them more determined to ignore us. The best way to deal with this type of developer is to boycott them. Besides the problems the clients frequently cause, it's one reason why I won't consider using Steam. Why should I reward Valve's very wrong attitude towards the visually impaired community by patronizing their service?4. And then there are the developers that promise great and wonderful things in the works, and then start ignoring us while at the same time taking our money for preorders that will never matterialise. Breakerbox Studios and their Steam Punk Neverland and Watch Tower Chronicles is a perfect example. He came on the forums promising all kinds of wonderful things and even said that for the low price of $25 you could reserve your c opies of both games. That was two years ago. Has anyone who paid the $25 ever received their games? They also said they had playable demos of their games for us to try before buying, yet at this time all of the playable demos that did exist are no longer downloadable and attempts to get a response from them regarding this have gone unanswered. The people complaining that code 7 isn't accessible on launch need to open their ear and listen for a change. There are only two people behind the Code 7 project and two people can only do so much. They aren't a Valve or an Electronic Arts with hundreds of coders available to do the work. It's just the two of them. Grow up and cut them some slack and be thankful that they are working on making the game accessible. As they have said, accessibility wasn't in the original tgame design plans. They could just as easily have ignored us and Code 7 would be for sighted players only.I for one am very thankful that I hav e Code 7 to look forward to and intend to support these developers by buying the game when the accessible version is released. Re: Petition for SomethinElse games to be back
Re: Petition for SomethinElse games to be back Yeah, it's not just the program code's license. You'd also have to get all the other artists who aided in creating the game to sign off on the idea too. And even if you accomplished that, if the original development team is no longer available, you have to pay somebody to learn the code to remove the DRM and simply making the game open source or free wouldn't justify that cost. And at only a few bucks I consider most of these very inexpensive or free mobile apps akin to rentware anyway. The games are gone, time to move on to newer games. Re: Does anyone have a copy of Endgame by Malinch Entertainment? Oops! Don't go dissing Zork (wink), of all the interactive fiction I've played, Zork is my absolute favorite.Zork was originally written on a minicomputer, a PDP 11 I believe. When Infocomm ported it over to micros it was so big they had to split it up into the now familiar Zork Trilogy. It was during the porting of Zork that they developed their interactive fiction engine that they later used for all of their games, of which I've played most. Re: Does anyone have a copy of Endgame by Malinch Entertainment?
Re: Does anyone have a copy of Endgame by Malinch Entertainment? I prefer interactive fiction in the style of Zork where you type in your commands, and pass on the multiple choice variety which I guess is called game book style. My first, and only, experience with game books were the Inspecter Cindy series and I hated them. There appeared to be no way to preview the choices before you selected one, and there was little, if any, documentation on how to use the programs, and what documentation there was refered to keys by what they did without ever defining what key on the keyboard it was.Needing to hit the move key in order to change locations made sense, but which key was the move key, it sure wasn't the em key, all that key did was ask a question to whomever I was talking to, and who the heck was I supposedly talking to anyway. Apparently you are always talking to someone, but until you tell the game who you want to talk to, you have no idea who the game thinks you are talking to.It didn't take me long to un install the game as poorly written trash and to write off 7-128 software as a vendor to avoid.I'll take the Infocomm approach over that nonsense any day. At least with the Infocomm adventures you knew what the allowed set of commands were and all the puzzles are solvable without walkthroughs or hintbooks, though some of the in game clues can be a bit obscure. And the writing is extremely good. Re: Does anyone have a copy of Endgame by Malinch Entertainment?
Re: Does anyone have a copy of Endgame by Malinch Entertainment? Nope, there are no menus in the Inspector Cindy games, nor are they HTML or PDF game books, they are written in Java and use the Java Runtime Environment. As far as I could tell, the only thing you could do in the games was to ask various suspects or witnesses questions and use their answers to solve the mystery. The only action in them was you moving from one location to another to question a different suspect or witness. The first interactive fiction game I ever played was the Colossal Caves adventure, though back then, the term interactive fiction hadn't been coined yet. That wouldn't happen until Infocomm came along and ported Zork from the PDP 11 to micros of the day.So you might say I grew up on parser type interactive fiction, game books didn't even exist yet. That is probably why I prefer them to game books, though the Inspecter Cindy experience didn't help my opinion of game books any.By the way, for those of you that have an Alexa enabled device, the original Colossal Caves adventure has been ported to an Alexa skill. So don't be so hard on those who got taken until you know their story.I've been able to avoid traps like these by making a general policy not to order anything until it is a real product ready for immediate delivery.I made an exception with the upcoming Victor Reader Trek, because Humanware is a much more substantial company than Breakerbox, and they won't bill my credit card until my order is ready for shipping. Two factors that have earned them my trust.I did get taken by Blindside though, nowhere on their site or in the game& #039;s documentation are you made aware that you are only buying the first of many episodes. You don't find that out until you actually finish the game.My solution to that deception is to never buy from them again, no matter what they promise. Re: Edge of Winter - New Castle Adventure Audio Game
Re: Edge of Winter - New Castle Adventure Audio Game Yeah, before I lost my vision and played mainstream games, there were several that I preordered because I wanted the collector's editions. You have to preorder those or get seriously scalped after the game is released. But those were all from big companies with generally good reputations to keep, and good standings within the gaming community to maintain, and you don't do that by screwing people. The only one that was a mistake was Duke Nukem Forever. Duke Nukem 3D was a great game, but after eleven years and still no Duke Nukem Forever, and then the news that 3D Realms had fired the entire development team, then a couple of months later closed their own doors. The Duke Nukem rights were picked up by Gearbox Studios who then finished Duke Nukem Forever and it turned out to be a worthless piece of crap that made you wonder where the eleven years of development work went. The wise cracking Duke Nukem charm that made the first three games such big hits was nowhe re to be seen in Duke Nukem Forever. One of the problems was that half way through the development work, they decided to abandone the Quake engine in favor of the Unreal engine. The two engines are so different that to do that you basically had to start over. Not to mention that I thought the Quake engine was a far superior engine. None of the games that I played that used the Unreal engine were what I considered technically impressive. They just all seemed pretty much the same old crap, just in a different box. Re: Looking for the full version of Smuggler's5.
Re: Looking for the full version of Smuggler's5. As far as I know, Steam itself is a nightmare to use if you are visually impaired. Last I heard, to use it, you have to use NVDA along with an add on, plus you have to apply a set of modifications to the Steam client itself, to make it accessible. And when Valve updates the client, you have to reapply the modifications because the update removes them.To me, that's a lot of work that should be unnecessary just to use the thing, plus I don't like the restriction to working with only one screen reader, that's not what I'd call accessible. Finally, nine times out of ten, back before I lost my vision and used Steam, the client itself was the cause of most game problems. Get a version of the game without Steam and the problems disappeared. Re: What is the first thing I need to do in private detective school.
Re: What is the first thing I need to do in private detective school. That's an old technique that harkens back to the 80s and the Apple 2.Standard discs had sectors with a known format for their headers which contained information like track and sector and some other internally used information such as the sector's checksum. A common trick was to change the values of the lead in and trailer bytes. With those changed, standard copiers could no longer find the sectors. That was one of the easiest copy protection methods to break. I know how I'd attempt to make a copy of the game but because discussing cracking methods isn't allowed here, won't say anything more than that. Re: What is the first thing I need to do in private detective school.
Re: What is the first thing I need to do in private detective school. Ah, I see and understand, and that makes a lot of sense. However, my point of view is if I can buy a legitimate copy of a piece of software, either from someone who no longer wants it or from a vendor that has some old copies around, then I'd rather do that than use a cracked version. Even for abandonware. The reason being that more often than not, cracks tend to come with nasty surprises. They are one of the most common ways that viruses and other malware are distributed. Now for this Starforce protection, as I recall the people behind it went out of business a long time ago. Starforce did provide very good protection but it became well known for being very buggy and no matter what they did to fix the bugs, they could never get over the damage it's bugginess did to their reputation so it never became very popular. Sony's SecureROM won that battle. With that in mind, if you can get one of the traditional cracking groups to do it, Starforce shouldn& #039;t be that hard for any accomplished cracker to remove. Unfortunately their cracking activities is more of a competition to see how many current and popular programs can be cracked in a given period of time, and accessible games for the visually impaired just don't fit into that category. So the approach we are pretty much stuck with is duplicating the disc to the point that Starforce thinks it's an original. Now the method of copying the disc is unfortunately based on information that is years old from a time before I lost my vision. If I recall correctly you can configure Elaborate Bytes' Clone CD to copy a Starforce protected disc. Unfortunately I've never had occasion to attempt this so I could be wrong about that. Plus, I believe Elaborate Bytes' programs are not what I would call accessible, so it might require help from a sighted friend to pull this off, if it is possible.http://www.elabora tebytes.chhttp://www.redfox.com URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=314289#p314289 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Plus, I believe Elaborate Bytes' programs are not what I would call accessible, so it might require help from a sighted friend to pull this off, if it is possible.http://www.elabora tebytes.chhttp://www.redfox.comI hope you find this helpful, I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help. During my Apple 2 days, I was well known locally as being able to remove the protection from anything, nothing was safe from my cracking activities, though even then cracking was a hobby for my own enjoyment, I never gave any of the results of my efforts to anyone, which annoyed a lot of people. Unfortunately I never got to that level of expertise in the x86/x64 world. Re: What is the first thing I need to do in private detective school.
Re: What is the first thing I need to do in private detective school. True, disc duplication doesn't alter the software so it's safer than cracks. Once you can successfully make a working duplicate, you can reapet the process, but this time save the disc as an image. That way it could be made available through the internet. All downloaders have to do is use the image file with Clone CD to make their own disc.I think the real challenge will be the accessibility of Clone CD itself. Re: What is the first thing I need to do in private detective school. Update:Still no response from the contact I was given that might have some copies of the game available. At this point I don't expect to get any response, so the best bet right now appears to be if somebody with an original CD will attempt to make a working copy with Clone CD.If there isn't one already, I seriously doubt that a cracked version of it will ever exist. The game is too old and for such a small market that crackers with enough skill to break Starforce won't be interested, unless they were paid to crack it.Pity, the game sounds very interesting. Re: What is the first thing I need to do in private detective school. I doubt that Nero would be able to duplicate a Starforce protected disc, or that if it did, it wouldn't work. The reason being that Nero was never designed to defeat disc protection like Clone CD is.But I could be wrong, and wouldn't mind being proven wrong, if it results in a way to get the full game. Re: What is the first thing I need to do in private detective school. Clone CD might actually be accessible, I've never tried to use it myself. I based my comments that it was probably inaccessible on Another Elaborate Bytes program that I have actually tried called Clone DVD which was inaccessible.Starforce caused so many problems that the developers of one game I played called Darkstar One ended up releasing a patch to the game that removed Starforce. I don't recall if it added a different brand of DRM but think not. VG Storm games and JAWS While looking at VG Storm's games, I noticed that at least one of them said it was developed with Blast Bay Studios or that they were involved.Since I use JAWS and there is a conflict with JAWS and programs written with BGT, I was wondering if anyone knew if any of VG Storm's games were written using BGT?Thanks! They are also written in BGT but require that a screen reader be active to be accessible. It would sure be nice if someone could figure out what the conflict is and come up with a permanent solution. Thanks for the answer! Re: VG Storm games and JAWS
Re: VG Storm games and JAWS Matchmaker is the game I was referring to, it is written in BGT, has to keyboard hooking conflict with JAWS, and does not use SAPI, it depends on you having a screen reader running for the game to be accessible. While checking out the start up of the three games I downloaded, Manamon, The Gate, and Psycho Strike, I noted that the gate also had the keyboard hooking conflict, so whether VG Storm programmed around it, I set JAWS to go to sleep in all three games.I don't think it's fair to blame JAWS for the keyboard hook conflict. At least some of the blame has to be laid on BGT because in my three and a half years of running JAWS, the only programs I've ever encountered with the conflict are programs written with BGT.I tried Paladin of the Skies a year or two ago and didn't like it at all. With all it's beeps, boops, and bops, instead of real sounds it seemed like I was trying to have a conversation with R2D2 instead of playing what was s upposed to be an immersive audio game. If the sounds had been more like those in Blindside or Entombed, perhaps I would have liked the game, but as it was, I quit playing it after only 15 minutes. Re: VG Storm games and JAWS
Re: VG Storm games and JAWS That's not the symptom of the keyboard hooking conflict between JAWS and BGT, that conflict shows itself as keys being pressed that should go to the game, more often than not, just disappearing. It's been a long standing problem between the two programs, Blastbay won't fix it because they've stopped all work on BGT and my attempts to get VFO to look at it have so far been met with deaf ears. Probably because it appears to affect only games written in some obscure language doesn't get it any kind of priority, which I can fully understand. They must have much more important fish to fry, like making sure JAWS works with the latest version of Office. And as far as trying something else goes, I do that already, but not to avoid this conflict, I like games so I try any game that interests me. If the game shows the JAWS/BGT conflict, and it is self voicing or use SAPI like the VG Storm games do, then I just set up JAWS to go into suspend mode when those gam es have the focus. I also do that with some games like Spoonbill Software's card games because in those games both JAWS and SAPI start talking at the same time. But honestly, if I want to try VG Storm's games, telling me to try something else doesn't make a lot of sense, unless somebody else wrote a clone of VG Storm's games in something other than BGT. Re: VG Storm games and JAWS
Re: VG Storm games and JAWS Well now, that's information I didn't have before. Most games I know of generally use DirectX to handle video, audio, and input. DirectX is generally only used for games, so if JAWS is doing something with DirectX, that might explain the conflict. So the real question becomes, wwhy did the authors of JAWS feel that they needed to do anything at all with DirectX?I can understand why a screen magnifier like Magic or Zoom Text would use DirectX to display the magnified image, but can't see why a screen reader would need to use it for anything? VFO must think that using DirectX is a better way to intercept the keyboard than the way other products are doing it.Right now, I'm not in a position where I can afford the time to learn my way around another screen reader. Besides, this one issue is the only problem I have with JAWS, so I see no reason to change to something else. Re: What is the first thing I need to do in private detective school. Oops! My apologies! I got the link to RedFox wrong in my previous post, it's fixed now.For what it's worth, It does appear that Clone CD just might be accessible enough to use. I just tried it and found that while I couldn't access any of the controls that might be in the program's main dialog, I could access it's functions through the drop down menu. Unfortunately it doesn't appear to have a specific setting for Starforce protected discs, but I think it's still worth an attempt.I believe the program I was thinking of was a program called SoftDisc which allowed you to simulate a physical optical drive using an ISO image file. You could configure it to mimic the disc protection of several disc protectors, such as SecureROM, SafeDisc, and Starforce.I hope somebody who has this game will give Clone CD a try and that it works, I'd really like to get this game.Meanwhile, can somebody provide a link to the demo, o r if it's not available somewhere to download, would somebody who has the demo please upload it to my Sendspace Pro account here:https://www.sendspace.com/dropbox/qn017uIn return, I'll then provide a direct download link for anyone else that wants it.Thanks! Re: VG Storm games and JAWS
Re: VG Storm games and JAWS I agree with you there. It's a pity, Q9 is a great game which deserves better treatment than what it is getting now. It's too bad that Brian Hartgen isn't open to making it available as a separate product, as good as it is, it could have been a money maker for him. I'd be willing to bet he'd sell more copies of it than he does Leasey or any of his other products. But then again there's Phillips own remark that nobody was buying it, so maybe not. Brian's reaction to the idea of making it a separate product gives the impression that he doesn't care anything for the visually impaired community unless he can pick their pockets clean. It's also unfortunate that Phillip chose to sell the rights to the game instead of simply making it free as he has done with most, if not all, of Blastbay Studio's other products. Like Brian, he didn't make many friends with what he did. Re: VG Storm games and JAWS
Re: VG Storm games and JAWS Ah well, not much legal we can do about it now.Anyway, back to the VG Storm games. At least, unlike Match Maker, it appears that none of these VG Storm games I've decided to try requires a screen reader to be accessible, so that's an easy fix.I tried suggesting to VFO to provide an option similar to suspend mode, except that all it would to is turn off JAWS' intercepting the keyboard so that at least the voice would still be available. That was something that is a lot easier said than done or I got ignored, again probably because it only affected games. While it may serve their goals now, I would imagine that eventually ignoring home users will come back and bite them in the ass. The problem for them though is by then the damage will be done and anything they do will be too late.I mean look at this community, it seems to be full of former JAWS users that probably left JAWS in favor of NVDA because they felt like VFO wasn't listening t o their customers. I'd be willing to bet money that the people in this community aren't the only ones that are making that switch for the same reason.Hmm.
