Re: speech synths in movies?

@30:That's by design actually to get the message out and make it super easy to understand for everyone. The EAS uses one voice, the weather radio has a different voice for broadcasts and alerts however. THe NWS actually mandates that the alerts are easy to understand and at least in some WFO they've been looking into doing their own improvments to the voices, I dunno if they have however. Yet when the EAS was hacked in Montana it had another voice. IIRC it's up to the station in question to set the voice up correctly following the guidelines.

Re: an accessible method to earn a little extra income

No it's not  just for that industry. You can't magically snap your fingers and suddenly 'accomdate' disabled people ina  workplace instantly. It takes time and effort and money, it takes a company taking, say, an office out of use to outfit it or being accessible, it takes, say, an IT tech pulling computers offline to make it accessible, it takesyou get the idea. It takes time. Time is something companies value more than money, you can earn money, you can't ever earn time back.If you were an employer would you want to shut down an office for two weeks to make it accessible knowing other people work there and it'll impact your finances? Also no, it's not just the flooring industry Ethin. Businesses are not charities. They need to make money to stay afloat, so the cheaper they can do things the better. Or rather the more they jack up prices, the better for the company in question.Don't forget for a company it's not keeping 10% of profits. You have taxes, rents, bills, wages and all that on top of it, you only keep a small %age of your profits after everything's said and done. You don't get the full million dollars you made, the IRS gets their cut, then rents, then overheads, then wages, then utilities, then any bonuses the managers award themselves...then the rest gets put away. I'm oversimplifying it here, but that's how life is. It's not fair, no, and the nature of business ain't gonna change. Businesses always want to make as much money as possible, while spending the least amount possible. If that means not hiring dissabled people or cutting corners to save cash, so be it. Businesses do it every day.ow

Re: an accessible method to earn a little extra income

#Accomadating disabled people is not a magic cure all though. It costs a lot of money and time and did you ever thing the rest of the workforce may well resent the time and money and changes to the workplace though? That happens. Plus the time and money it costs aren't  recouped instantly, ESPECIALLY not the time aspect. Yes you may well earn back the $10,00 or whatever it is, but as far as the time goes, shutting down a factory for a week, or a store for a week, or whatever the empolyer owns, that has a far bigger impact on the business than money. That is lost sales and lost income all the while, debt is mounting up. I'm speaking from my family being involved in business practically all their lives,it isn't just a simple oh make X accessible and we'll be a bettr businessLife don't work like that, it's again a double edged sword. That guy in a warehouse I mentioned earlier? Yeah his dad has lost customers that turned over half a million a year because they don't want to deal with his son interacting with them. Through no fault of his own that guy is seen as a liability to suppliers and customers...even if they don't directly interact with him, just the idea of it scares off certain supppliers/customers, and in an industry dominated by the big companies, you neeed all the customers and suppliers you can get...so what did his dad do? Went around to the customers and suppliers BSing he let his son go and the supppliers and customers came flooding back to him. That's one company, ine one specific industry. But it shows that at least in the flooring industry, disabled people aren't thought of that highly, which, I get it. You may scream and scream and whine and bitch and moan it's not fair, and realistically, it isn't...but these are firms that are constantly out there every single day. I got talking to one of my dad's customers the other week when he dropped by to talk to my dad who was out. I made a joke about needing a new carpet for my room, and asked if it could be done in bright colors so I could see it better. He asked if I was joking, I said I was and asked why disabled people are treated like shit. His response was, quote.and yes, I've left out the companies. I happen to respect what the companies do and want them to carry on making flooring so my family can stay in businessJace, a it's like this. The guys on the and don't want to shut their factories down in Belgium and Holland and train the workers in five different languages and take five or six weeks to get through that, It'll kill their margins, it'll screw up too as they buy from them. My reps deal with and they'd have to be trained in English, Flemish, Wallonie, Dutch, German and Romanian so that's easily several million Euros or their workers and multiplay that by several factories. Okay they could take the hit but they'd have to raise the prices on the rolls and raise the cuts too and that'd hurt the buyers. It's economics, they want to do business as cheap as possi/i]That shed light on it, I get where he's coming from, if you're a business you want to spend as little cash to make as much as possible. I asked my dad about this and paraphrased what the other guy said and my dad essntially said it costs too much and there's no way in hell for his company the managers would ever actually agree to redo the office or warehouse given they are leasing the land from the city and haven't ourgith bought it. More money down the drain for planning stuff and hiring workers and shutting the office for X weeks while it's going on and pissing off the managemnt, who to be fair are not the nicest bunch of guys in the world. Actually, as a rule the flooring industry is very very cut t throat and bitchy and not for the faint of heart. Ever heard your dad go on a 45 minute explitive rant at a supplier and dropping a ton of interesting words? I have, and I get why, I get that particular supplier tried to fuck over a number of firms and then refused to own up and pay for damaging equipment, then tried to lie their way out of it.tl: DR: Accomdating disabled people may not always be in a company's best interests. Re: blind characters in games of any media, present and discuss.

But media in general, at least books etc are escapism, fantasy if you will, it's supposed to pull you out of every day life if you pick up a romance novel. Same for comics and movies based on comics though. Daredevil was written a certain way for a specific reason howwever. As for games, again, escapism. Nobody who pays $60 for a AAA game would want to play a realistic portrayal of a blind character. Realistic realism does not sell copies, aceptable breaks from reality happen in games to make them fun to play really...Even the hardcore simulators do not simulate everything because who would actually want to, say, drive or 20 hours to get somewhere versus 2 in a scaled down map, or who would want to.say..in GTA deal with running out of gas in the middle of a mission, or in FSX not be able to instantly reset a flight or teleport to any place on the planet or instantly switch aircraft. Realistic realism is, I'm afraid, overrated. Yes there's things like ARMA that do it to a degree, but even those hav breaks from reality. Same with any genre, there's breaks from reality because realistic does not always equal fun. End of the day publishers have targets for games to hit so devs have to make a game that sells as many copies as possibble. If that means not being realistic to get extra sales, they'll do it. Been there, done that, having to cut features that weren't fun is a part of big game development really

@Mason:No, in Firefox you can trick Skype to think you're on Chrome by changing the user agent, you just need a hrome user agent string and to do a bit of tweaking in about:config in FFZorin's Ubuntu based so it uses apt as well, though I'm not sure if Zorin's going to update to go along with Ubuntu 18.04.If you got a VM handy.I'd say try out different distros as wel though. For the FF thing, I use this and it works fine.Go to about:config in FF and accept the warning, and in the search field put in useragentCreate a new string titled...general.useragent.override.web.skype.omFor the value, put this:Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/60After that you should be able to make calls and such on Skype but it may well break in any browser.

Atually ChromeVox only half works with Chromium itself, you need to tell Chromiu to work with the speech-dispatcher. Chrome itself works out of the box mind.

Already did, with the same end result, it failed to boot, and it's the latest ISo from Antergos themselves.Amusingly, Manjaro works  fine no problem with DD or any other method, Ubuntu works fine with DD and its derivatives, so I'm not sure why Antergos gives me .c32 errors. And yes, This happens over multiple USB sticks. I've verified the file's not corrupt, I've tried several different tools, I've even tried using two different distros to burn the ISO to a USB drivewith no luck. So, ideas? Also what's wrong with DD? I've been told to use it as it's more reliable as long as you know what you're doing that is.

2018-02-25 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : JaceK via Audiogames-reflector

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

To answer the point about the book series.Got in touch with the author after I posted that to clarify. Here's the CLiffs Notes version:1. The character in question is written a certain way for plot and character reasons and she's not rewritten it to please the NFB2. The NFB also objected to the mere concept of the character having a seeing eye dog, completely missing the point that it...ya know, helps with the very thing the NFB  are preaching.3. Said character is ensconced in a Victorian-era society and is very high up in the social order, so yes people do things for him, which the NFB objected to a king (which the character in question is) having servants and a butler who help out and cook and do housework. Which is, by the way, how things were, if you had servants and were high up in the aristocracy in, say, Victorian era timesyou didn't lift a finger, the servants did all the work and you took the credit. So that's accurate. Also the NFB objected, at least in part to the idea of that character hitching a ride with other characters. their general mantra was well he should drive. To which the author responded no, he's blind for a specific reason as far as the backstory goes. He's not driving, he rides with the rest of his people and that's that.Oh also siaid author in question was heavily invovled with hospitals up in NY/Mass/Boston area by the way so she knows first hand how blind people are.worked Additionally...the ADA doesn't cover every single eventuality. though, if you check the specific wording, there's a crapton of loopholes and issues with it. If the NFB wanted to not give out, say, a harness for a guide dog, they'd find the specific part to justify not giving it out according to the ADA and wave that around.Additionally, a comment I saw on Twitter has blind people up in arms that sighted announcers are caling goalball games. The reply from somebody working for a TV network was priceless, pointing out announcers need to see what they're talking about. Hey, college radio could take a hint from those guys

Also to add to yer point about the NFB members being againsthere's  a short list of things they are against:EverythingWell everything bar being 'independent'Guy I know out in RI who works with a band I'm friends with had a blind roomate who was taught by the NFB. He couldn't do anything in the real world from washing food before preparing it (supposedly the NFB had taught that wasn't required if you bought food...the fuck? I took high school cookery classes and that was the first thing we were taught) to not knowing how to work a button oven or a stove or microwave at all, and of courserefusing any help. It culminated in the Proidence FD being called because the smoke alarm went off since said blind guy decided it'd be a wonderful idea to cook fries on the stove. Without help or supervision, because, independence. Cue a whole apartment building being evacuated into a fall evevning at around 6 or 7and a hell of a lot of angry people turning their hate on that blind guy who genuinely couldn't understand why people were angry at him. Oh I don't know...forcing them out of their homes into 40 degree weather while firefighters put out a pan fire maybe?

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

Surely filming the NFB would qualify as a low budget horror movie? Just curious if you're planning to make it an indie arthouse film Nah see my previous posts on the first few pages about my run ins with the NFB and their kind. I still think they need to learn to be independent and be independent of their own bigotry and assholeness. Yes. That's a word. I said so!Also my bad for misgendering you. Your writing style made me think you were a guy so sorry for that one...I know an author who is a NY Times bestseller who told me, no joke, the NFB 'asked' her to rewrite her blind character into a more independent figure who wasn't out finding his significant other, who had a guide dog and lived with other people. The fact that character is more independent than the NFB cares to admit is neither here nor there. IIRC said author just went with their original idea for that character and had him being blind as a small part of who he is, not the main focus. Which if anything pissed the NFB off more. We're talking a series where the first book has the character doing things anyone does, he just happens to be blind. That's not good enough for the NFB, who want him to act like a blind guy, theyget thisobjected to the author including a seeing eye dog as an animal companion, objected to him being driven around by a butler, and oh yeah, objected to him joining in fights and having meals cooked for him. Last I checked no changes were made to the book series and hey, I'm thankful for that. Are the NFB really going to get so butthurt over a fictional blind character  in a book that millions of readers cheer for? Who has a very valid and screwed up reason for being blind by the way and by the way #2: His blindness is only ever mentioned in passing in the book, sure he has a braille clock but that gets thrown out at one point in the series in favor of him and his mate having a discussion over what time it is (4am at that point)

Super+alt+S doesn't work for every distro, but alt+f2 Orca --replace does. Out of curiosity what desktop are you using on 16.04? I'd suggest getting Mate for use with Orca honestly. Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

There's a huge difference between buying cheap stuff because you're on a small paycheck or food stamps for instance, so you have to be cheap to make the most of what you have, versus being cheap when you can afforrd to buy stuff though. I'd even argue if you're well off and you are being cheap you're being cheap for the sake of being cheap, even though you have money.I know quite a few people in the US through mutual friends who simply don't have the money and don't have the means to buy, say, a new top of the range phone, or they pick and choose what they buy, maybe cord cut and ditch cable to save money for car insurance for instance, so at least from that end of things I understand living cheap. That's not my isssue. My issue with Bob is, and I agree, he works a steady job, yet doesn't wanna give up his free shit he's got given on welfare. I asked him one, do you really need a top of the line iphone and a top of the line laptop, and a top of the range this and that, his response was VERY telling. Yes, because I'm blind. I can't have anything else. I'm sorry but what? I pointed a few sighted friends who fall into the aforementioned living paycheck to paycheck to this and they all mostly said the same thing, why do the blind get all the free stuff when we're sighted, we work our asses off, get taxed and struggle to pay bills every month, yet the blind get everything given to them?I understand that sentiment, Iget the anger and the bitterness, I do feel welfare should be readdressed if only to help the truly vulnrable, hell I'd be in favor of taking the cash it'd cost to buy a blind person an iphone and a carer, I'd be willing to put that into ensuring a single mother raising two kids on her own could afford to eat and pay utilities come the end of the month. I don't se a reason why blind people should get top of the line iphones, imacs, Macbooks, whatever they want and then go waving it at people who are scraping by on a paycheck that's just above the SSI cutoffand yeah, I've seen it done, I've seen blind people showing off their new iphones, macs, whatever to people and we're talking expensive stuff they've not had to work for at all. I'm in favor of like I said taking that balance and scaling welfare bak to what somebody absolutely, blatantly needs to survive. Access to Jaws is not a *must* for survival, Access to a computer is *not* a basic human right. Food and shelter are.Okay that's my little rant over. I just feel like there's some people out there, blind, sighted or whatever who play the welfare system for all its worth and then bitch and whine when the loopholes are closed.

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

Okay yeah posed the question to a blind guy I was at high school with. This is his reply, paraphrased...let's call him Bob for this instance:No because I'd have to give up my free housing and my freee stuff I get on welfare, I don't want to give all that upThe problem, though is last I spoke to him, he works and has a good social life so I'd argue that could come off as entitled, the 'I work but I want free stuff' mentality when Bob actually works, has a full time job and still somehow claims to be a helpless blind guy. Nope, not making it up, he works a 40 hour week,.yet still plays the woe is me, I'm blind, card. Which frankly pisses me offf because I know for a fact there's a lot of unemplyed sighted people who could do the exact same job and do it just as well, without requiring (and this is from Bob's own words to me), getting his employer to fork out for training, for accomadating his needs. My uncle runs a roofing businesss, and again, this is paraphrasing his own words:He doesn't want to seek out and deliberately hire disabled people simply because being a sales rep involves driving and selling roofing stuff to people on a dady by day basis, e.g. leave house by six, drive to the office, then go drive all around the area till 4-5pm then head home. As my uncle stated, there's no way a blind person could do that at all. Yes, he has an office secretary who has her own issues, but as he stated, that's a different job. In that case he hired the best candidate for the job, this woman Lysssa could start right away, and get to work with minimal expense needed. I was shocked to learn how much it costs in certain fields to train or provide services for a disabled person, f.ex. my uncle has been forced by the fact he runs a business to not hire blind office workers because the company would simply lose too much money in bringing them in, getting the hardware and software all set up to  get them settled in, then go for the training. I was told during a conversation over Christmas it cost, and this is in GBP, or British pounds, £3500 to bring in one blind office worker from scratch, train them up with courses, then the cost of modifying the firm's computers to be accessible. This is where the bigger isssue comes in. I know the firm's IT specialist, Brian, he's honestly tried, and tried, and tried to find a way to do it on the heap to keep the company making moneyand from a pure tech perspective it's simply not doable, I explained to my unle Charles bout NVDA and he told Brian, Brian went and looked it up from what I heard, I got a call about it and it ended up as thanks for telling me about this but the charities are pushing us to use Jaws and won't give us discounts, the government won't either so we're screwed...which pissed me off. End result was my uncle told my aunt reported the company has made a concious choice not to deliberately hire any blind employeees simply to stay afloat. I understand that. I get for a company that turns over around a million a year...before taxes, I get where my uncle and Brian are coming from, I've heard the numbers, it's around £5-6k to get a blind guy set up, then you have the recurring costs. The final bit that pushed the roofing firm over the edge was how one blind guy pushing for a job told the firm to, quote, 'Make the job accessible' meaning the sales representative job. When it was suggested, reasonably, he'd be paired up with another rep and they could cover the same area, the blind guy apparently turned angry and said something like what the hell's the point of that? I don't want to be paired up with a sighted person to do my job. I'm independent.Which turned out to be a ton of bullshit, honestly because, the story goes that blind guy found his way out of the offfice and started screaming at one of the wagon drivers (the firm has a couple of 40 ton trucks for moving stuff around), the truck driver apparently floored the blind guy for threatening him with his cane, sure, the wagon driver got a warning for it but after one of the other guys stepped up and said he was hit with a cane, last I heard that warning got taken off his record after it was shown he was protecting himself.

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

Blind people were downtrodden in 1900? Yes. Because society was different then, you had a very religious perspective on the world, you had several different strains of Christianity in the US, and you had a smaller US to bootIn 1900 it was common for disabled people to be treated as drooling idiots, incapable of anything, that attitude lasted up until the 1970s at least in some areas and still happens today. Certain religions viewed, in the late 1890s/early 1900s blindness or disability as a punishment from their chosen deity for not being religious enough, for instance a child born out of wedlock that was blind was blamed on sex outside marriage, a child born to a married couple was seen as blind due to the faults of the parents and a god punishing the child, for example. Also for 1900s society consider the social constructs. You didn't exactly associate outside your social level, the aristocracy didn't associate with the common riff raff in the streets, and the disabled were seen in certain areas as no better than beggars or even criminals. In certain parts of the world, blind and disabled people were forced into 'therapy' to 'cure' their disability. Or just tossed into insane asylums.Society hasn't really changed in 117 years from the given date, as a whole. If anything, things like the NFB/RNIB/etc are a throwback to social class structures, I feel, they need to get with the times and notice the world's adapting,  and changing. They need, I feel to stop treating blind people like it's the 1900s and they need help doing the simplest little things, or to stop treating them, at the worst ends of it, like babies who can't be trusted to do anything on their own.

No need to go download any programs, just enable Orca once logged into the Mate desktop and go, it works fine with the stuff provided, which is the usual fare, Firefox, Thunderbird, Pluma and so forth., it's a lot easier here but to each their own. Also yeah my school CIT (200) course was Windows this, Microsoft that, I used Narrator oddly enough because it was a Microsoft product. Yeah cars were simpler in the 70s/80s and up until the early/mid 2000s at least. Also something I wanted to touch on, re: depressionI'd argue it's not depression on its own, I'd argue that hey, those services/social stuff/etc are out to condition you to their way of thinking, the sad thing is the people who do that truly think they are doing the right thingwhich they aren't. It's either their way or not at all. For instance, if I mention I run Linux I get told to use a real accessible OS, Windows with Jaws 99% of the time from people in social services/blind services. Nah. I'm fine on Solus with Orca up to date thanks...

Speaking of remote startbecause everyone needs a snarky Ron Pearlman momen. I'll just leave this 1000 Ways To Die clip here to illustrate how not to start a car...enjoy the karmaertruckma:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyqXd-w7keYThough without htat they are more complex. That being said I still don't think self driving cars would solve anything, either though simply because it shifts the problem elsewhere, you still have to hope said auto driving car is reliable and you stil have to know how to manually take over in theory.

@106:Disagree, for the most part cars have gotten easier to start, consider 50 years ago you had to pu out the choke, kepe a foot on the brake, other on the clutch, hold the key turned in the ignition and make sure the car was in neutral, then move the choke at the right time, all the while keeping the clutch pushed in so the car didn't stallyeah, I'll take keeping a foot on the brake, turn key, push gear, go. Helps that my mom used to run a driving school in the 60s and 70s so I know where I'm coming from with that, the Minis were a bitch to start and several other cars were more complex. For the issue of not asking for directions, sighted people do that all the time. If I'm heading somewhere with my family I know for sure my dad won't ask for directions, my mom will just go the way she's always gone, not ask for directions unless there's trouble on the road and so forth.@Ethin/Eenz:It's not as simple with 3D printing either. Okay, printing a replacement part for an arm or a shoulder's one thing, I know a guy who actually printed the parts he needed and had surgeons reattach those printed parts getting his shoulder working again, but the eye's a whole other ballgame.@Braille (again):I'd argue that yes it is the services fault though since at the age most typically get caught up in them they are still learning and like a sponge, and (at least in my experience) the services and social stuff doesn't take no for an answer and the more you try to do stuff they don't want you to do the more they lock you down. Maybe that's just the services I've dealt with however

@92: For me at least, sweeping the ane around tripped people, the long ass canes that is sweeping them across an entire corridor for instance, it's easy if you're walking a certain way to get that cane caught up in your legs or btween your arms. Also I partially agree with scaling back the free stuff...but only because the media makes such a big deal out of what disabled people get for welfare money that it auses resentment, actually most people on welfare get treated like this by the media, the 'look at X he gets Y and Z without working' mentality.

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

I think it's sevral things Jeff. One: The obvious argument, you stick out with, say a wheelchair or a cane or somethinghowever that leads to a related if tangential pointwhy certain disabilities are more 'accepted' than othersSecondly: The idea that, or perception that disabled people in general are weaker or not able to do certain things. It ties into the general perception of what is disabled, I mean the symbol is a wheelchair, right? Sonaturally, people associate disability with not being able to do stuf and thus have a mindset in certain cultures that it's a weaker group of people.Third: CulturesI touched on this briefly in point 2 but.Had a friend who was of Thai descent in college and she spoke more Thai than English , but her culture had a totally different way of viewing disability than say a Western nation. I'll take it a step futher and throw religious and cultural views into the mix, some sects of various religions believe disability o any kind to be punishment for sins, for years the oft told tale was masturbating would make you go blind. Each culture has its own way how it views disability however based on a whole range of factorsFour: How various disabled groups present themselves:I'l refer back to the militant blind activist groups and autism activist groups here, they present to the world at large their views and those views quickly get taken up as the views of an entire set of people, at least if you believe everything you read, which a lot of people do. Even if there's several moderate people in either group the perception (which isn't helped by the extremists) is that all blind people or all autistic activists are militant flag waving anarhists hell bent on toppling a world that they don't like and basically, fuck the rest of the world, it's all about them...rightly or wrongly that's the perception of such groups. Also on the subject of entitlement@Orco:I'd argue you could come off as partly entitled for taking free stuff but at the same time society is enabling you to be entitled by showering you with free stuff, it's arguable if you absolutely need every single thing they're throwing at you

I do think this issue of entitlement is one sided though. Yes, sighted people can be pushy and entitled but so can blind people. I'd even argue blind people are more entitled and arrogant and pushy than sighed people in some cases too.Oh the militant groups are out there though, they absolutely are, I'm not going to say they aren't because you haven't run across them yourself but they certainly do exist. As do peaceful advocacy groups, too.

@Braille:That happens though even if you don't remember it...okay maybe not so much now for the user guide stuff but certainly 10+ years ago when everything had printed manuals.which is one thing I miss about modern tehnology, now you get a little slip of paper in a box instead of a nice printed manual. Even flat pack furniture skips out on the cheap stuff, or so I ben told. That being said I got into the same discussion with family who work in preschool settings and an interesting point was raised. I was asked if it's easier not seeing the traffic that's coming, that got me thinking that in some situations, not seeing what's coming is a good idea. I've been skiing and it was more interesting not seeing where I was heading and going by feel, not by sight...though admittedly I had my head down the whole time anyhow.

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

For meno. I've had mostly, say, 99% positive interactions with people in general outside of social services/advocacy groups which have been extremely, EXTREMELY negative in their attitudes and perceptions. If anything I'd argue it's the aformentioned prison/monster experiments again with social services/advocacy groups being closed minded, arrogant, pushy and extremely demeaning. Take that away, I have no issue with the world at large. I could have full vision and run into assholes, that's just a fact of life, nothing to do with ability or not.I don't fit with the OH MY GOD YOU HAVE TO BRAILLE LABEL EVERYTHING!111 type of blind people, I don't fit with the Jaws is X, NVDA is Y type, I'm somewherer on the edge of it doing my thing, I mentioned earlier I broke a disabled riding organization by being good at riding (to the point where I'd go for long trail rides and showjumping and suchlike and barrel racing) and they had no idea where to put me next, so as said I got trained by the stable's instructor. She was always willing to treat me as somebody who can ride just as well as the next guy, but just can't see that well/at allsuits me fine.Do I feel limited? No, but again I was not raised as blind with input from blind services, ahem, 'blind services' so I did stuff normal kids did, games, watching TV, reading and so onyet blind services would, and had this happen, limit me from those things because, paraphrasing what I've heard, 'blind people do not watch TV or play games', which from both RNIB/NFB stances, is completely and utterly false, I'd rather stretch out on a couch, find a good show to get into and not deal with audio description since I find it extremely intrusive, personally, but I don't feel like that's  a limit at all. It's who I am.Maybe part of it's giving the finger metaphorically to the worst parts of being blind, the stereotypes, the stereotypical culture o having every tiny tiny bit of yer house Braille labled and such, of doing what blind services tel you like some dog. I'm sorry but that's completely and utterly fucking demeaning to my way of thinking, having somebody come in, not even know you and say oh, this this this this and this have to change, stop doing this because you shouldn't and you have to do this from now onya, no. No thanks.

I was, and oh look, a demeaning sport, or at least taught in a demeaning way, and I don't know any kids who are legally blind with sight who willingly want to play goalball...Fun fact bout me: I'm a horse guy, I did barrel racing, I learned show jumping and freaked my instructor out. I also broke the RDA (riding for the Disabled) system by being too good for it. So, I got trained by a regular instructor and helped around the stable, which worked out well for me. Gimme a horse and somewhere to ride, I'm good thank ya.Oh and also, speaking of demeaning stuff, being forced to learn braille, I dug my heels in and refused. To add to my previous postI'd argue that yes, you do need a backup of some sort, be it an external HD, cloud (yah right?) or a backup OS like I suggested, I'm personally in favor of a backup OS because 1. Having another OS on your system is useful for many reasons, 2. It'll help you become a better user if you can get good with that othe OS and 3. Let's say Windows gets infected with a virus that locks your data, you still got Linux/Mac/Etc on that machine and it's still useable, for instance. Plus it's good to try other OSes

Ubuntu Mate won't be supported past July for 17.10 and 2021 for 16.04 Long term suppport. The drawback to the LTS vrsion is you have older software. Also, do not, ever, use Vinux. Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

@10: I agree and disagree. Personally, if I'm...say out for a meal I usually* get the wait staff helping me out once they notice my cane and such, I've had cleaning staff help me out if i'm...say in a store and they strike up a conversation, so I get where you're coming from but in my experiences, once you're out of school and away from blindness services, and out in the real world, I personally have found people to be mostly helpful and genuine, though yes, there are two faced people out there and people who avoid blindies, but...I've on the whole had mostly positive reactions from people I've run across in every day life. That being said I'll expand on your point on blind services: I find them degrading, demeaning and extremly, extremely pushy, maybe it's a cultural thing. I split time between the UK and US when I got the cash, and in both countries, the RNIB and NFI/AFB/whatever else is Stateside are extremely pushy. I've stood in an apartment in Boston (staying with a friend) and had an NFB representative loudly tell the whole, fucking, floor, quote: Oh he can't do that, he's blind, here's what you have to do, this, this and this. Ended up taking a call to the cops to get the guy out for harrassment, plus he put his hands on me and I told the cop I was willing to press assault charges. That shut the NFB guy up. Or the NFB (again...they are pushy) guy who wanted me to quit using programs on my laptop because they 'were not blind friendly'Programs in question? Notepad. Chrome, Oh andbest one.Windows desktop back when I had Windows. They tried pushing me to buy, yes, BUY Jaws, I told them politely I wasn't interested, they got aggressive and said, quote: You'll never succeed in life if you don't use our stuff.Nope, no thanks. I said something like you go first down the stairs but be warned, I may trip over my cane. That subtle threat got the guy to leave me the hell alone. No, I ain't joking about that last story either. Maybe it's just a New England thing, but..Alright, anyone who has been to NE knows we (and I'm practially one by association) love to say fuck a lot. It's a thing up there, and hey, I've heard everyone say it, what the fuck is pretty much a question up there, from gas prices (looking at you BP!) to just a general inquri to everyday speech. So I got told I shouldn't say it. My response was summed up in four letters. Not to mention the response of the other people I was hanging out with. I believe from memory there were a few threats to punch said blind services guy.RNIB's no better. I have a social worker here who drops by to help cook and for a talk and such, I told her I'm not okay with stuff being forced on me, i.e. braille, and we had a long discussion about it while I was slicing up fish. She said something to the effect of the RNIB is out of touch with modern life. That, I agree with. I don't see the point of going all in with blind services, more use them as a resource for, say, Kindles (I love my paperwhite thanks...), and such but don't take their bullshit seriously, if I did I'd be posting this from an internet enabled brailler while waving my cane around the floor demanding my room door be brailled. That's the level of bull my local RNIB people are pushing for. I've explained I use the web a lot, and I'm fine on Linux, I'm used to it. They told me Linux isn't accessible, despite me showing them it is, then I 'must use VInux' despite me pointing out it won't be supported next year, and walking them through my laptop setup (Solus/Orca works fine for me), they then tried to force me to sign up for braile lessons. No thanksI told them so, hey tried guilt tripping me into it.

@7::The Dutch, Spanish, French and others did the exact same thing (imperialism and conquests), for instance the Spanish conquests with the conquistadors, and the African tribes willingly sold their own people into slavery for decades before the European colonial powers got there, in fact African tribes are still reported to sell off their own members today long after imperial powers collapsed. What about...saythe US 'empire', that is committing the exat same imperialist acts as the British, or French or other European colonial powers? Also, I find it odd you single out the British when there's documented proof the other colonial powers were just as big into the slave trade, in fact some sources state it was American and Carribean (yeah a lot of them ended up in French or British or Dutch or Spanish controlled islands, not just the USA) land owners paying the captains for slaves, not the captains sailing down to Africa of their own accord and buying slaves.Lasly, a lot of prisoners of various powers were dumped far away. Australia's the notorious one, but quite a few ended up in the Carribean, the thought was if they were out there they couldn't do much harm...look how that turned out...

Ack, well there goes my hope for Mint's flgship DE to be useable...admittedly Mint Mate is okay but...it's Mate.I can't. I just can't go back to a distro without the Brisk menu. That's a godsend really, the Brisk menu, hit super/windows key, menu comes up and you can navigate it like a Windows start menu. It's super useful...I just wish I could hide the alt F1 menu on Solus Mate since I never use it but hey, unbinding the alt F1 shortcut works, and rebinding alt F2 to super and R works fine hereadmittedly I kpt alt F2 to do the same thing however for convenience's sake.Okay, so, I'm just meh about Mate right now, It works fine, I have it set up how I like but it's just like yeah, okay< I got Mate, right, but what else is out there that's a decent DE that works with Orca and is simple, easy to learn and lightweight?

Re: Linux assistance center

You referring to Ubuntu Budgie or Solus Budgie as I've got Orca to work with Budgie last year, however any sort of updates completely broke it, so there's that...but out of the box, at least for Solus it did actually work with Orca for a few months thenthe updates got put on the ISO. I'd ask the Solus devs what their plans are for Budgie and Orca, since right now AFAIK it still uses GTK but they're shifting Budgie over to QT...but I'm going off an old 2017 Budgie ISO I got laying around which still used GTK so caveat: Not tested the latest Budgie release. Mate works fine here...Also for the launching from terminaleh no, depends on the distro but some (Mint) you have to, or it's easier to launch from a terminal, or when the shortcut just insstantly closes (oh hi Mint...AGAIN). Personally I've had more success getting Orca going from a live session terminal than the alt F2 menuAh crap thought you could hide the Alt F1 menu. I just unbound the key combo then, so there's that. On another note, gotta love digging around in conf files. I managed to get my desktop to shift everything 90 degrees...which is both hilarious and annoying for everyone else who walks past and asks if I know my desktop's rotated 90 degrees. Yes. I'm aware. Yes. I like it better like so.

Well played then. I like stuff like that, but @Dark: Speaking of the Beatles, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was always figured to be about an acid trip...which was certainly not the case. I still think Imagine is one of the most creative ways of getting Lennon's political beliefs across, he was after all aa self confessed socialist. Also, Leonard Cohen's version of Hallelujah..that gives me chills every time but I agree with Mojo on that one, it's not a love song or adoration if you listen closely, I feelit's an absolutely amazing song. Re: The Hidden Meanings Of Songs?

The two links were to a pair of WatchMojo videos about song meanings everyone gets wrong.I wouldn't say Don McLean's American Pie is really a hidden meaning. Vincent, now that's a different story...the one that goes starry starry nightyeah that's a hidden meaning.I always laugh at Born in the USA being lauded as a pro-US song. Another one I wanted to mention, and this was absolutely brilliantwas The Guess Who? had their US number 1 with American Woman. Radio loved it, the US loved it.yet it turned out it was criticising the US and US life. Gotta love Canadian musicians for that one. Oh and if anyone can explain Poker Face's hidden meaning...Okay one more. I Don't Like Mondays, this one's not quite that well hidden, just look up Brenda Spencer and you should get the story. Short version: She had mental issues, her father got her a rifle. She woke up one Monday and decided to shoot out of her window at a school. Years later Bob Geldof immortalized it in a song. She (Brenda) TOLD The police her reason for shooting people was, simply. I don't like Mondays. Also, this just popped into my head while researching the Boomtown Rats song... Pumped Up Kicks iswelllisten very, VERY closely. Also listen closely to Green Day's songs, specificailly Wake mMe Up When September Ends, and Time Of Your Life. They are not what you think.Oh and since the Dave Matthews Band was mentioned earlier.yeah, Crash Into Me is not a love song.nope. Not if you don't want to come off as a voyeuristic creep that is.I'll keep going. This got mentioned in the videos but Tom Petty's American Girl was not about a college girl who killed herself, and no, Hey Man, Nice Shot was not about Kurt Cobain's suicide, that was about the tragic cas of Budd Dwyer, who spawned many, many dark jokes in Pennsylvania after his live suicide at a press conference. No, I don't suggest you read up on his situation if you don't want to get quite angry knowing he was innocent all along but took his own life at a televised press conference. That led to the aforementioned song, Hey Man, Nice Shotwhich in itself is  arather dark title for a song dealing with such a public suicide.Okay, one I didn't get until relistening a few times even though it was covered in the videos I posted.Hey Ya by Outcast. It takes a few listens but hello existential crisis loomingsame with Some Nights by FUN. Also, If You Seek Aimy by Britney Spears.isn't, a[[about sex. It's about how she feels people deal with her. Oh andagain covered in the video but Like a Virgin is.not about sex. It's about dealing with a breakup and a new relationship.Lastly..yeah, In The Air Tonight was about Phil Collins going through a divorce. Ouch. He made millions off of it mind.smart, smart guy

Not sure on that one then, I didn't have any issues installing on actual hardware here, and I left the bootloader box to whatever it was on a fresh install, checked I believe by default.Okay that's odd about the installer as for me on my desktop and laptop I could tab through it no issues. Okay, question. Is your VM set up to connect to the internet, if it isn't, try it again with it hooked up to the internet, as I found when it was not connected I had issues but once H hooked it up to the wifi for me it worked fine, I could go through the install process. For the black screen, once instaled did you go and remove the install media and restart it? It'll take you to a login screen and you put your password in. At least, that's what's meant to happen here but again I've had no issues installing Solus on either of my two machines  so not sure what's going on with a VM but I do know some distros hate VMs

Also it only upgrades if it finds things to upgrade4. For the bit when it asks for name, and passwordI used num7 and num9 to scroll up ana down and tab to cycle through the boxes and do my input. It won't auto log you in but that's an easy fix, it's also handy to know too.Hopefully that helps.

@26: Solus (the OS) is an independent distro from the ground up,  that's amazingly good, comes in Gnome/Mate/Budgie flavorsand I'd say Gnome or Mate. Budgie's moving to QT so that sort of broke for me after an updatehttps://solus-project.com/home/ (the site), oh and did I mention it's stupidly easy to learn too? It at least here is amazingly lightweight on my system, even if the few gripes I got with the Mate flavor I can probably fix myself, Orca doesn't start up quick enough for my liking so I'll just do that manually once the system fires up, and I had to compile a few things myself but that's a minor issue.either way, I'm now on team Solus here, fast, snappy, responsive and it's not going to go EOL any time soon.So there ya go @26, there's another good OS

Eh I dunno, If/when I get a new laptop I'll probably just get a cheap Dell I can throw a bigger HDD in or one of those portable machines. Also, I'm not the world's biggest fan of Ubuntu, simple because Solus is leaner, cleaner and doesn't have half the bloatware Ubuntu comes with. I get that you want programs to do everything butI'd rather personally install them myself after setting the machine up. Rather than having a distro bundled with apps I'll (probably) never use..which is a lot of them Solus comes with, the photo/graphic editing ones for instance, so I'll always remove them, , though I still do think Ubuntu is far far worse for including bloatware apps than other distros.. IMO I'd much rather have a distro that comes with (say) the Mate desktop, a terminal, and the whole range of Gnome stuff preinstalled, a web browser, and just go from there. I only use Ubuntu because it's quick and easy and about half of the Linux distros are based on it in some way, shape or form. That being said I'm not against the idea of UbuntuI'm against the idea of packing a distro full  of apps people may not use just because some people might use it once or twice.

Ah the thing with the Broadcom drivers is this, they provide two different ones for LTS and current kernels, make sure you're installing the correct ones for your kernel typeAlsosince you're on Budgie do NOT update the system since it'll convert Budgie to QT which breaks accessibility. I'd have to double check on Mate if the Broadcom drivers are installed, here, but you could always grab the linux drivers from a Windows OS, save them, go into Solus, and copy them from your Windows partition to your Linux partition and install them that way. I know, it sounds convoluted but it should work, I don't have a broadcom chip thankfully, mine just worked out of the box so to speak.@Trenton: Dell Vostro user here, works fine for my needs. KDE as far as I'm aware, isn't accessible  easily, but don't quote me on that, I don't use KDE as I personally don't like it.Cinamon isn't, as far as I know, accessible with Orca, or at least when I tried a few weeks ago it didn't work. I'd try out a bunch of desktop environments and find what works for you, but I'd say stick with Gnome based desktops  since they do work fine with Orca, the Gnome 3.X, the Mate 1.X and even their derivatives.Note: XFCE/LXDE do not, AFAIK work out of the box without exporting variables.

Re: Windows vs Linux

Okay you got a few ways to get into Linux1. Virtual machines. This is probably the easiest way, get VMWare or VirtualBox and a Linux ISO and set up the VM2. Actually making a bootable ISO and installing Linux on your physical systemFor the second one you'll need to turn off secure boot however which is going to be a bitch to get to and turn offbut if you can do itI'd recommend it personally if you want to ditch Windows.Orca works perfectly fine with Gnome based desktops, I'm partial to the Mate desktop myself, I'd suggest it for everyone as it's easy to learn and everything is easily and logically laid out, you got your applications in on menu, places in another menu.Games on WINE is a thing, you can run Windows programs with WINE and once you get that set upit should run a good number of Windows programs. For accesssibility again, Orca keeps on improving, and it's open source so you can view the code and make tweaks and help improve itt as well, unlike on the Windows side where things are closed source and tweaking closed source code is often viewed as hacking and/or illegal and/or piracy and/or Is Orca perfect? No, but it's absolutely useable with Firefox or its derivativesplus it comes preinstalled with most distros, so that's a plus.Last thingI've used both Windows and Linux and I've said it many times, on a laptop, Windows FEEELS slower, even if the numbers are the same. Here's a few distros to get you started:Ubuntu MateWhy? It's Ubuntu, it has a metric load of stuff in the repos, and it's perfectly useable with Orca, but it will stop being supported at some point. That being said, upgrades are free. That being said, again, you're stuck with the software and versions in  a particular version you download, 16.04 does not have the 16.10 software for instance, though there are ways around that.ArchWhy? If you want to go the ultra hardcore geeky Arch route then there's Antergos or Sonar that, in the latter case is accssible Antergos which is an installer that simplifies the Arch install. Advantages of Arch? You get the latest software without waiting for it to be curated or added to a repo. Disadvantages? Bugs, Lots of bugs Oh and Sonar comes with the Gnome desktop by defaultSolusWhy? Indie distro, it has a Mate and Gnome flavors that work fine with Orca and  it's a midle ground btween the cutting edge of Arch, and the fixed releases of Ubuntu.Hopefully that helps, I'd say Solus is your best bet as far as getting into Linux goes frankly, it's walked through how to install it on their site and it doesn't come with half the bloat Ubuntu's saddled with, plus you get put into a live session to try out Solus without having to go through a menu like in Ubuntu

Re: Wine, audiogames and SAPI. How do I...?

Nope, I just installed the speech SDK via winetricks and the dlls argument.Tried it on my 17.10 laptop and it did the same thing, I only installed the speechsdk file, it changed my whole session from a Mate to gnome (I'll assume fallback), so no clue what's up with that. That's just something absolutely weird with the speech SDK

Re: Any Windows 10 Users Experiencing Severe Slow Downs After Update

I did come across claims of 28-40% slowdown on som machines, so there you go...Quidsup mentioned it on his video that the slowdown may be significant for some machines. So there ya go. A 27-40% slowdownyeah, good job MS in how you handled it. Still not as bad as Intel's PR mind

Re: Lightweight Orca linux distros...any good ones?

Just gonna necro this to say I came back to this topic to point out a few things1. Solus Mate is much, MUCH improved after a sudo eopkg update and is much much more useable now2. Seamonkey/Waterfox are lightweight browsers3. Orca in Solus Mate is much much improved too, and since this is one of the top search results for lightweight linux orcaI'd say everyone should, if ya got a 64 bit PC, try out Solus Mate. That's the good newsThe bad news is I came to this after Budgie decided to jump to QT without telling me making it useless here, which is a shame as I like the feeel of Budgie. So, yep, back to Mate it is, and it works fine for me. Fast, no crapware installed with it a la Ubuntu and it's constantly up to date, plus it's mostly idiot proof. Which is pretty damn good for me.
