I also run a Lavry DA-10 with my SB3 (Classic) in my main system.
I run a Duet in a second system with its own analog outs. Not quite as
refined, but still quite reasonable.

factor for some people is size. The Transporter is not a small
unit. The Duet and SB Classic are very small footprint items. (I
currently have my DAC out of sight.) Depending on how you display your
equipment, that could be a plus/minus in either direction.

losers regardless of whether you go the DAC route or the Transporter.
I don't know enough about preamps with built-in DACs to offer an opinion
on that option.

I bought a Bel Canto S300 amp and have been very pleased with it. (I use
a SB3 through a Lavry DA-10 DAC to drive it directly.)
Small footprint (8.5 wide, 3 tall, 12 deep), 150 watts/channel
(stereo) and cost new when I purchased about a year ago was $1,400.

However, back to your original question, I'd think you'd be in about
the same league DAC-wise with the DEQ vs SB3. I ended up finding that I
got more out of a high quality DAC (Lavry DA-10) than I did the
equalization.

I got my DA-10 from Vintage King Audio in Detroit. I don't think they
had a restocking fee, but that was six months ago and I couldn't state
absolutely. However, that's irrelevant to me as my unit is a keeper.

very rarely - basically only when someone brings over a CD and says
listen to this. If I like it the disk will end up ripped. The volume
is easily adjusted at the Lavry for those few situations so is not an
inconvenience of any significance.)

I ended up with my SB3 feeding a Lavry DA-10. The sound, to me, is
equal to the Transporter but roughly half the cost. The Transporter is
a lot jazzier looking (though not quite to my taste) and the Lavry
rather a plain-jane, but I couldn't justify an extra thousand just for
cosmetics.

3. If I would have sold my existing SB3, it wouldn't sell used for
$300. Figure maybe $200.
So, when all is said and done, I'm about $1,100 versus $2,000. To me,
that's a big chunk of change and close enough for me to refer to it has
