Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name Question

Liz, I just saw this post as I was gone all day helping with an Estate
Sale. I think that all they are saying is that they are ignorant of the
first name. You don't say who the ignorata is, the father, mother, woman,
who??
Post the URL so we can see what you are talking about.

Oh. That’s what that means. Ignored
I know of their mistakes. I fight it all the time. I was just really curious

Something else I thought of this morning is that if you have a person like
“Maria de Jesus” and no last name you enter “Maria de Jesus
\\” the program would then leave the last name blank otherwise it would
arbitrarily assign “Jesus” as the last name. You can try entering names in
different ways and then check on how everything sorts when you do a search.

I believe Rick is correct. I'm not a FTM user, but I don't think that program
asks for Given Names and then Last Name. I think it just asks for Name and does
the American thing of assuming the very last name is the surname. It doesn't
work that way in all countries.

Sam,
I use Legacy but when I am in the "Given " name field, I write it as Maria da
Gloria de and then Sousa in the "Surname" Field. When it prints out it comes
out Maria da Gloria de Sousa all in a row. I would think that FTM does the
same?

Wow, that's too bad! Maybe you need to do the name as Richard says with the
/Sousa/ around the 'Surname'? That's what we used to have to do with PAF.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name patterns in genealogy programs

2019-03-01 Thread 'Sam (Camas, WA)' via Azores Genealogy
Rick and Cheri; Thanks so much for this info. Now that you’ve said it, I
recall having read that before. If only I had been intelligent enough to do it
that way! Now, I have some 5,000 plus names, with a large percentage being
Portuguese and I will have to go back and add the back-slashes. Oh, dear!
Something to keep me busy, I guess!

That is the same method I use in TMG. Sorting and searching by last name is
much easier without the de’s, da’s, do’s, and dos’s, and of course it prints
out in the right order.  In FTM the last time I used it you had to use I think
back-slashes at each end of the last name for example: Maria da Gloria de
\Sousa\.  Then the program would treat  Sousa as the last name

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name patterns in genealogy programs

2019-03-01 Thread Cheri Mello
I believe Rick is correct. I'm not a FTM user, but I don't think that
program asks for Given Names and then Last Name. I think it just asks for
Name and does the American thing of assuming the very last name is the
surname. It doesn't work that way in all countries.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Name patterns in genealogy programs

2019-03-01 Thread 'Sam (Camas, WA)' via Azores Genealogy
Hi all; I’ve been trying to see if I can follow Cheri’s procedure in my
familytreemaker program. That is First name/names followed by de/da/do and
surname only in surname field. So far, I only see one space for inputting the
name and it is for the full name. Am I missing something? Is there a work
around?

Thanks all,

Sam (Mazatlán, MX)

[AZORES-Genealogy] Name and relationship of godparents to the baptized

2019-02-14 Thread Maria Lima
Ooh, I just saw that it says '"and avo"! Sorry, it was so clear after I
figured it out. Is his last name vasconcelos(?) and is his daughter Anna de
Sao Joseph?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Name and relationship of godparents to the baptized

2019-02-14 Thread Maria Lima
TOP LEFT, 5th line from the bottom

Does it say The Godfather is Manoel Ferreira de Vasconcelos, married, brother
of the baptized and Anna de Sao Joseph (??) daughter of the godfather . (?).

Maybe it does say he was the brother(?)

Thank you for looking at this and helping me.

It was Joao Brum Santos Macedo, which is the name shown as father on my
grandfather's birth record. The change was to Joao Brum. The Santos was not
used by his ancestors but was for at least 2 of his children. Now I'm
wondering if that note is on all his children's records. Always something more
to do!

This is the first time I have seen this. It is possible that the priest made a
mistake when writing that record and changed the father's name. Later he needed
to mend this and went to Court.

An example: my paternal grandmother is Emília Cândida Gaspar. On my father's
birth record his mother is listed as Maria da Conceição, who actually is his
paternal grandmother. If this would be an issue, we would need to mend his
birth record.

Funny, my mothers last name was Santa. They put Santos on her birth so I had

Left hand page, 6th line from bottom going up.

Can someone please help me decipher the name of the parish??

It says the name of the parish for Antonio Francisco was the Matrix of Sao
Rego(??) on the island of Sao Jorge.

I looked up and didn't see anything that resembled that. Maybe it's name
changed ? Maybe I'm not reading it correctly?

Thanks for looking at it

Yeah, I read that Bernarda & her husband were born in the Sao Miguel Arcanjo
church of Vila Franca and had done Lent there.
I have Bernarda's parents marriage in SMA. I don't have the generation back. So
Bernarda's grandparents going on back. I think I did the work way back in the
early 2000s. I think I was at the Biblioteca using Canto's indices. I know I
have some notes somewhere, as the stuff in the computer is kinda incomplete.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name the baby (Vila Franca do Campo, 1697)

2017-10-10 Thread JR
Sorry, guys, I have her married to Jose Botelho Veloso as Bernarda de
Medeiros, SMVF, May 10- 1723. If you look at body of text, you can see the
stylized 'n' as part of Bernarda. The margin name is misleading as priest
tried to repair a 't' that he had inadvertently written. But I was also
fooled until I studied the the text and then looked for the parents.

Both bap and contrahentes VFSM

Cheri, is this your ancestry? Or is it Shirely's?

Jeremy, I'm used to this priest and it's Joao. If you look a little further
a couple of pages you will see his writing of Joseph and see how he writes
his "J". Barb is looking at the second up from the bottom not the bottom

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name of Child (Santo Espirito, Santa Maria)

2017-03-16 Thread Ângela Loura
We share this Andrade Puim line.

The priest did write the name with an "i" first, then with an "e", and with an
"i" in your direct ancestor.

I've ser both versions, and also a similar name, Izidora/Isidora.

Assunto: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name of Child (Santo Espirito, Santa Maria)

A second set of eyes on this would be greatly appreciated because I'm having
trouble with this child's name:

Here is the Link to her baptism...
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-SANTOESPIRITO-B-1765-1779/SMA-VP-SANTOESPIRITO-B-1765-1779_item1/P94.html
 (2nd entry on the left)

As was discussed earlier surviving childhood was a significant challenge and I
believe she died just after turning two. Here is the link to her obit...
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-SANTOESPIRITO-O-1776-1808/SMA-VP-SANTOESPIRITO-O-1776-1808_item1/P4.html
 (5th entry on the right)

Is her name Ezideria or Izideria... it looks similar to the modern form of
Isadora.

For extra bonus points... this couple has another child about three years later
and they name the child a suspiciously similar name. Here is the link to the
second childs baptism...
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-SANTOESPIRITO-B-1765-1779/SMA-VP-SANTOESPIRITO-B-1765-1779_item1/P147.html

Although it's a similar (or perhaps the same name of the child that has died)
this one baffles me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

George

By the way, I'm a direct descendant of the second child and I have found many
other references to her and it appears that there is no consistent spelling of
the name.

Thanks again...

[AZORES-Genealogy] Name of Child (Santo Espirito, Santa Maria)

2017-03-16 Thread George Sousa
A second set of eyes on this would be greatly appreciated because I'm
having trouble with this child's name:

Here is the Link to her baptism... http://culturacores.
azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-SANTOESPIRITO-B-1765-1779/SMA-VP-
SANTOESPIRITO-B-1765-1779_item1/P94.html (2nd entry on the left)

As was discussed earlier surviving childhood was a significant challenge
and I believe she died just after turning two. Here is the link to her
obit... http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_
digital/SMA-VP-SANTOESPIRITO-O-1776-1808/SMA-VP-SANTOESPIRITO-O-1776-1808_
item1/P4.html (5th entry on the right)

Is her name Ezideria or Izideria... it looks similar to the modern form of
Isadora.

For extra bonus points... this couple has another child about three years
later and they name the child a suspiciously similar name. Here is the link
to the second childs baptism...
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-SANTOESPIRITO-B-1765-1779/SMA-VP-SANTOESPIRITO-B-1765-1779_item1/P147.html

Although it's a similar (or perhaps the same name of the child that has
died) this one baffles me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

George

By the way, I'm a direct descendant of the second child and I have found
many other references to her and it appears that there is no consistent
spelling of the name.

Thanks again...

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name of child

2017-02-23 Thread Maria Lima
Hi Roslyn and all who have helped me with this.

  Thanks so much.

It took me some time before I noticed the names were above the baptismal
information. The name on that baptism looked like Maria at first glance but
then I started comparing letters to other records and started doubting my
initial reading. I've since seen the priest write the same name (Maria) more
clearly and close enough to this one to be certain it is Maria. Thanks so
much.

You are right!

Usually they wrote the name side by side to the record, so i didn't even

2017-02-22 Thread Hughes Roselyn
Hi Maria,

I believe that if you look just above the beginning of the last record on
the left page you will see the name Maria. This priest wrote the child's
name above the record instead of in the record.

Hope this helps.

I hope I didn't confuse anyone with my JR, which stands for John Roias.
Although I wrote posting on Teresa, you are perhaps directing your remarks
to John Raposo.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name of child

2017-02-05 Thread Maria Lima
Thanks, I went with Tereza after studying the letter T and "L" in other records
he wrote. It's definitely a Tereza. Whew, it was a challenge.

JR: this TEREZA is a child of Heronimo Martins x Maria Cravalha our common
ancestor. So far I found records for three children for them

MARIA, baptized 15 October 1667, page 0162
(Ginetes, Baptisms 1588-1677) (wife of Antonio Ferreira)

MATHIAS baptized 27 September 1671; page 0162

TEREZA, baptized 13 January 1676

I've searched into the year 1684 and haven't found any more children. I
noticed the three kids they had were spaced out; being 5 years between the last
two.

I'm going to look for obits to see if one or both of parents died.
I dont know if you already had these in your data base but they are our
cousins

I would stick with Tereza. Study the L's, there is complete bottom loop.
This first letter stops at the bottom. The dotted 'i' is perhaps

[AZORES-Genealogy] Name switch Santa Barbara, Santa Maria

2017-01-10 Thread aportugee via Azores Genealogy
Trying to locate the birth record of Maria Jacintha. According to the marriage
record of my great grandparents, my great grandmother was named Maria Jacintha
and her parents were Antonio Jose de Moura and Rosa Jacintha. In the marriage
document which was written 7 January 1874, Maria Jacintha is 23 years of age
and she was born in the parish of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria. Here is the link
to the marriage record in case I have read any of this incorrectly. It is the
only one on the page and very clear.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-SANTABARBARA-C-1870-1879/SMA-VP-SANTABARBARA-C-1870-1879_item1/P33.html

I have looked at the years 1850 thru 1852 for Santa Barbara, Santa Maria births
and the only one I can find that comes close is this: Right hand side, middle
one. The father’s name is correct but; notice that the mother of Maria is
shown as Maria Jacintha, not Rosa Jacintha as the marriage document shows and
the paternal grandmother is named Rosa Jacintha. My question; Do you think
the priest switched the names around in this birth record? Is there any way to
further verify if this is the correct document or not?

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-SANTABARBARA-B-1847-1860/SMA-VP-SANTABARBARA-B-1847-1860_item1/P23.html

As always, thanks in advance for any help you can give me,
Sam (Mazatlán, MX)

U.S. Censuses are not released for public viewing until 72 years after the
census was taken. So the 1950 won't be released until sometime in 2020. You

There was a Gil family from the Azores who emigrated to Lawrence, MA in the
1950's. I remember the daughter being Maria Gil, and a son Frank Gil. Don't
know which island they were from.
You might want to check the US census in 1950.

Hello!

I just unearthed the marriage record of one set of ancestors of mine.   It is
fairly neat writing and I don't have much trouble deciphering most of it.

I can make out that on November 27th 1779, Antonio de Quadros son of Antao
Pereira de Quadros and Maria Ascencao (deasesed) married to Anna Pereira de
Borba daughter of Simao Pereira de Cunha (deceased) and Maria (deceased).

I am however having trouble making out Anna (the bride's) mother's last
name Gil? It looks like an abreviation for something whatever it is I
am certiain I am misreading it.  If anyone has any thoughts on it please let me
know!

The only other thing I would like to verify is that the grooms mother is
deceased, not the grooms father.  I usually see defuncto after the parents
names, but in this case it is before her name am I correct that she is the
one that is deceased, and that Antao is living?

Thank you very much!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name Abbreviation on Marriage Record

2017-01-06 Thread Cheri Mello
RR=Rodrigo Rodrigues, the author of "Genealogies of Sao Miguel and Santa
Maria islands." I would not go looking for your family on those islands. Or
any other island until you trace them back in time and it tells you that
they came from another island. No Goose Chases for you!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name Abbreviation on Marriage Record

2017-01-06 Thread Mary Bordi
I was reading the names and I was thinking "Sao Jorge" and when you
provided the link it was! (I like to do that.)

Anyway, I have Nunes Gil in my Sao Jorge ancestry. (Norte Grande.) Not sure
how common it is, but it did exist in this timeframe.
