Hello Stefan,

I just installed the current packages from the edgy repositories. If you
don't need the GUI front-end you only have to upgrade a few, if any,
additional packages.

Be aware that the packages later than 1.38.8 use sqlite3 instead of sqlite2
as default which is horribly slow.

[Bacula-users] Quick question about requested tape

2006-09-11 Thread Jaime Ventura
Hello.
When adding a new tape to the pool, bacula ask me in with slot the
new tape is.(I'm using an autocharger)
When launching a restore job, bacula asks me for a specific tape so
it can perform the restore.
My question is:
 do i need do insert the requested tape on the original
slot(specified when the tape was added to the pool),
 or can I insert the tape in any slot (bacula should search
for it)
 or insert it on the drive?
What then? Will issuing a mount command be sufficient for bacula
to continue the job?
Thanks

[Bacula-users] Bacula Heavily Duplicating Data

2006-09-11 Thread Gavin Conway
Hi,

I've setup a bacula instance for one of our customers for 20+ clients
but we have a problem. We have a Fedora system that is using 41gb in the
  / directory. When we run an estimate against the system it comes back
with 86gb's. When we try to run the backup it tries to actually backup
this much data.

Is bacula doing something unusual with symlinks as I'm at somewhat of a
loss to account for how we can be duplicating the data so badly.

If anyone could let me know if there's a setting I need to use (sparse
files?) as I can't see anything obvious in the docs for this.

Fileset below (I've explicitly stated the directories);

FileSet {
   Name = Full Set
   Include {
 Options {
   signature = MD5
   onefs = yes
   compression = GZIP1
 }
 File = /
 File = /bin
 File = /boot
 File = /debootstrap
 File = /etc
 File = /home
 File = /initrd
 File = /root
 File = /sbin
 File = /srv
 File = /usr
 File = /var
   }
   Exclude {
 File = /proc
 File = /.journal
 File = /.fsck
 File = /backups
   }
}

Client config;

Client {
 Name = server2
 Address = 10.0.44.100
 FDPort = 9102
 Catalog = MyCatalog
 Password =
 File Retention = 6 days
 Job Retention = 6 days
 AutoPrune = yes
 Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 10
}

Storage Daemon config;

Device {
   Name = FileStorage
   Media Type = File
   Archive Device = /backups
   LabelMedia = yes;
   Random Access = Yes;
   AutomaticMount = yes;
   RemovableMedia = no;
   AlwaysOpen = yes;
   Maximum Network Buffer Size = 65536;
}

Cheers,
Gavin

[Bacula-users] Bacula-dir and remote Postgres

2006-09-11 Thread Gabriele Bulfon

Hello,
after discovering that Postgres is too slow on Sun 280R machines for
Bacula management, I decided to test one of them and have the Postgres
DB run on another faster Solaris machine on the LAN.
So I prepared the new DB from scratch, modified my original bacula-dir.conf to connect to the new DB host :

Catalog {
 Name = MyCatalog
 dbname = bacula;
 user = bacula;
 password = "bacula"
 DB Address = myhost.mydomain.com
 DB Port = 5432
}

Now I see the Director starts on the new DB (the old one is down), but...
if I run bconsole as before on the Director's machine, any command hangs for a while and then says:

Could not open database "bacula".
postgresql.c:168 Unable to connect to PostgreSQL server.
Database=bacula User=bacula
It is probably not running or your password is incorrect.

I am absolutely sure that Director connects to the DB, because debug is enabled, and I can see the Director is ok at startup.
Infact, if I shutdown the remote DB, Directors complains and does not start up.

...what is my problem?!?

Thanx
Gabriele.

Are you sure you're only running 1 director? Are you sure bconsole is
configured to connect to the director that's able to talk to the database?

Without more details, those are the best guesses I've got right now
Based on your narrative, I was confused as to where the director is now
running -- is it on the database machine or the 280R?

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula-dir and remote Postgres

2006-09-11 Thread Gabriele Bulfon

The original setup was one Sun280R machine running all the daemons and postgres.
This machine is responsible for backups.
Because the DB is too slow, and slow down the overall backup
performance (from 10K it slows down to 1K...), I wanted to move
Postgres.
So now, all bacula daemons are still running on Sun280R, and here I'm also running bconsole.
I only changed the configuration to connect to the new DB on the other host.
And actually the Director is connecting correctly.
Probably, the scheduling will run.
But I need to add volumes and run a job by hand now, to check performance, and bconsole is giving problems.
When I run bconsole, it correctly connects to the Director, and its
prompt is there ready to accept commands. But any command comes out
with that error.

configured to connect to the director that's able to talk to the database?

Without more details, those are the best guesses I've got right now
Based on your narrative, I was confused as to where the director is now
running -- is it on the database machine or the 280R?

 Try setting the sparse flag, or excluding /var/log/lastlog

If it is a 64-bit system, you may want to exclude

It seems to me that there's a few ways to resolve this issue - to implement

 if I run bconsole as before on the Director's machine, any command hangs

 It is probably not running or your password is incorrect.

I do not get this error.

 I am absolutely sure that Director connects to the DB, because debug

 shutdown the remote DB, Directors complains and does not start up.
 ...what is my problem?!?

Have you tried starting bconsole with -d?

Yes, providing you are not running multiple simultaneous jobs that do the
substitution.

1. Use a RunBeforeJob with the jobid edited on the command of a script you
call.  E.g.

   RunBeforeJob = /mnt/snapshots/setup-filelist %j

2. The script will setup a file list in a fixed place --

[Bacula-users] Volume confusion

2006-09-11 Thread Brian McCann
Hi all. I've been using Bacula for a little over a year now, and I
still don't understand something. Here's a snip of parts from my
config:

Pool {
  Name = Server1
  Use Volume Once = yes
  Pool Type = Backup
  LabelFormat = Server1
  AutoPrune = yes
  VolumeRetention = 8d
  Maximum Volumes = 9
  Recycle = yes
}
Storage {
  Name = Server1
  Address = x.x.x.x
  SDPort = 9103
  Password =
  Device = Server1
  Media Type = File
}

I wanted each file to be used only once so I can delete one backup if
I needed space in a pinch. I thought that one backup would take one
volume, but this isn't the case. I've got several backups for various
clients that take multiple volumes. Why is this? Is there anyway to
predict this or prevent this from happening?

Thanks!

[Bacula-users] Rescue cd create/make problem

2006-09-11 Thread Don MacArthur
First, thanks to so many who have contributed to creating a robust and
elegant backup solution. It is the only one I could find that has
enterprise-class features, and backs up all my OS's (Win, Lin, OS X).

rh: es4 2.6.9.42.0.2.el
rescue: 1.8.6
bacula: 1.38.11
both sources located under /root

My task is to prove the restore process. I'm trying to use the boot cd.
If I should switch to something else that is better, please point me in
the right direction. My windows restore process went very well, no
hitches. I'm working on my Linux servers, and OS X is next.

I've run through the process a couple of times and assume some error on
my part is the cause of the problem.

I've tried it with and without bacula-fd ./configured as static.

In my first attempt I compiled non-static:
1. start-network failed because the mask was 255.0.0.0 on a 192.168
network, and no gateway.
2. there was no bacula-fd.conf anywhere after booting. To determine
this, from / I ran ls -Rl|grep bacula-fd.
3. hard drive partition didn't in that the last partition created
exceeded the available space on the disk.

I recompiled the fd from /root/bacula-1.38.11/ with:
./configure --bindir=/usr/bin --sbindir=/usr/sbin --enable-static-fd --
enable-client-only

make all created an image that used the bacula-fd.conf from the
bacula-1.38.11/src folder, instead of the one from /etc/bacula.

Booting this cd and running start-network again set a network config
with the wrong mask, and no gateway.

So, before I spend another few days trying to patch this, can anyone see
what I'm doing wrong?

TIA,
Don.

2006-09-11 Thread R.I. Pienaar
hello,

I think its safe to say that there is no canned solution to make
Bacula talk directly to Zabbix you'd need to write something to do it.

There are many posts in the archives here that lists ways to monitor
nagios, some lets nagios email the central monitoring, some puts down
files on a webserver with success/fail statuses and some query the
MySQL database of the Bacula director, any of these will work with
Zabbix but you'll need to script something to make the two work and I
suspect that is dependant on your local Zabbix installtion etc.

 that all wonderful IT answer of I know and I'm busy working on it

You'll be needing a commandline application which can send an SMS, given
some text to send, and a number to send it to (this could be hardcoded
into the application).

Something like

./sendsms --to +4477123123123 This is an SMS

Once you have that, it's easy enough to interface to Bacula, in the same
way that job results are emailed.

You'll probably find the same tool useful for a bazillion other things
(pushing your bill up in the process :)

[Bacula-users] FW: Autoloader: Replace tape in magazine after backups complete?

2006-09-11 Thread Jeremy Koppel
Actually, as a result of my testing last week with umount, my weekend
backups didn't run; umount only logically unmounted the tape, and then
Bacula sat there waiting for someone to manually (logically) remount the
tape. And the manual actually says:

If you have an autoloader, the mount command will not cause
Bacula to operate the autoloader.

Which is, I guess, what I need. Bacula is operating the autoloader for
the actual backup, it just keeps the tape in the drive when the backup
is finished. It looks like it's calling a program, mtx-changer, to do
the actual magic, so I'm going to experiment with that once my weekend
backups have completed.

Those aren't commands. Commands are those that appear in the list when
one types help.

Try 'umount' and see what the next step in the script should be. All
you're looking to do is write a sequence of console commands -- no
different than running them at the console.

If you don't know what the console commands are, read the manual.

 I see your point. When I look through the Bacula logs, I see stuff

 02-Sep 01:02 ns2-sd: 3303 Issuing autochanger unload slot 1, drive 0

 But typing loaded drive 0 or autochanger loaded drive 0 or other
 various variants into the Bacula console just gives errors like

 Nope. My guess is the zero has to do with autochanger slots.

 Important to keep in mind here is that all this is doing is running

 commands on the console. If umount [CR] 0 [CR] q [CR] doesn't work in

 the console, it's not going to work here either.

 I don't have an autoloader, so I don't know how prompting for them

 works. In any case, I'd still recommend a more specific umount

 storangename line -- good to be as specific as possible.

Currently we do it by using the ntbackup tool and letting Bacula backup
the resulting *bkf file. When you have Exchange installed a different
ntbackup tool is installed which allows for a complete backup of the
Exchange server.

Works like a charm, or so we hope, havn't needed to recover an Exchange

 2. there was no bacula-fd.conf anywhere after booting.

Re: [Bacula-users] Backing Up Microsoft Exchange

2006-09-11 Thread Georger Araujo
Yes, Bacula can easily back up an Exchange Information
Store, but only if the hard part is already done.
You should

1) Back up the Information Store to disk using
ntbackup;
2) Back up the .BKF file ntbackup just created to tape
using Bacula.

Yes, I know it takes twice as much time and storage. I
don't know if you have the time, but I know you have
the (110% percent * IS size) required free disk space
to do those monthly defrags (Don't have? You should!
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328804/), so it
shouldn't be an issue.

Other backup solutions (CA's ArcServe, Symantec's
NetBackup) can backup Exchange on the fly because they
have application-specific agents that leverage the
APIs Microsoft makes available. The same goes for
other applications: SQL Server, Oracle, etc. As of
today, Bacula does not have an Exchange backup agent.

Georger

As it was mentioned before, there are only 2 ways to backup exchange.
1. Use 3rd party soft (ntbackup.exe will work. I use it to backup system
state on all servers)
2. Use VSS under Win 2003.
To conserve space on the server itself in the case of ntbackup, you
could map a network share on any other machine (even Bacula server
itself via samba) and backup exchange to the network share. Then use
bacula to grab that file. (you could also delete that file with RunAfterJob)

You can also use exmerge. It is a MS tool to dump mailboxes into PST

is that it is easier to extract single mails from a pst file.

APPARENT BUG: What is interesting is that it is complaining about
wanting a new volume exactly 24 hours *AFTER* it last tried to run,
and didn't find a new volume. (You can see that a we're a few days
ahead of 30 days, so I'm having to manually purge the volumes each
day until we catch up)

HOWEVER: I didn't purge the volume and release it for writing until
11pm last night.

ANALYSIS: So.. the volume's usage period is being determined not by
when it was first written to, but instead by the start time of the
first job that wrote to it.

Is this behavior known? Is it fixed in current? Obviously it's not
a crucial flaw, but if its decided not to fix it then it should be
documented.

[Bacula-users] Quantum Superloader3 LTO-3 Not seen as autochanger

2006-09-11 Thread Michael Nelson
I am pulling out my hair here trying to get our Quantum SuperLoader3 LTO-3
autochanger working with bacula 1.38.11-3.

The OS is CentOS 4.3 up to date on patches, kernel 2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp.

I previously had this same jukebox working just fine on a Dell server
running the same OS and with pretty much the same config file, but since
moving the drive to the tape host where it will be living (an IBM x336
rack server with an Adaptec 29320A Ultra320 SCSI adapter that is there
just to drive the jukebox), I can use bacula and tar to write to the tape
(/dev/st0), but mtx and bacula and tapeinfo and every other utility I can
find don't seem to believe this jukebox is a jukebox.

For instance, when it was connected to the Dell, I could run label
barcode and it cycled through all the tapes and labeled them per the
barcodes that are on them, just as should be. But if I try the same on
the IBM box:
*label barcode
The defined Storage resources are:
 1: File
 2: Autochanger
Select Storage resource (1-2): 2
Connecting to Storage daemon Autochanger at 10.10.0.10:9103 ...
3306 Issuing autochanger slots command.
Device Drive1 has 0 slots.
No slots in changer to scan.
*

... it thinks it has no slots. Utilities outside bacula report errors. I
tried the stuff at
http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/Autochanger_Support.html:

nsb:/etc/bacula#  /etc/bacula/mtx-changer /dev/sg2 list 0 /dev/nst0 0
mtx: Request Sense: Long Report=yes
mtx: Request Sense: Valid Residual=no
mtx: Request Sense: Error Code=70 (Current)

mtx: Request Sense: FileMark=no
mtx: Request Sense: EOM=no
mtx: Request Sense: ILI=no
mtx: Request Sense: Additional Sense Code = 20
mtx: Request Sense: Additional Sense Qualifier = 00
mtx: Request Sense: BPV=no
mtx: Request Sense: Error in CDB=no
mtx: Request Sense: SKSV=no
READ ELEMENT STATUS Command Failed
nsb:/etc/bacula#

Most commands give similiar results:

nsb:/etc/bacula#  mtx -f /dev/sg2 status
mtx: Request Sense: Long Report=yes
mtx: Request Sense: Valid Residual=no
mtx: Request Sense: Error Code=70 (Current)
mtx: Request Sense: Sense Key=Illegal Request
mtx: Request Sense: FileMark=no
mtx: Request Sense: EOM=no
mtx: Request Sense: ILI=no
mtx: Request Sense: Additional Sense Code = 20
mtx: Request Sense: Additional Sense Qualifier = 00
mtx: Request Sense: BPV=no
mtx: Request Sense: Error in CDB=no
mtx: Request Sense: SKSV=no
READ ELEMENT STATUS Command Failed

Yes, /dev/sg2 is the correct scsi generic for this machine. It has an LSI
Logic raid controller that takes up /dev/sg0 and /dev/sg1.

I recompiled the kernel to make sure CONFIG_SCSI_MULTI_LUN=y was set (it
wasn't before, but rebuilding it with that switch turned on didn't help).

This drive has a webserver in it and I am able to run the drive through
all its diags and move tapes around and stuff through the web interface.

Here is the section from the bacula-sd.conf file:

#
# An autochanger device with one drives
#
Autochanger {
  Name = Autochanger
  Device = Drive1
  Changer Command = /etc/bacula/mtx-changer %c %o %S %a %d
  Changer Device = /dev/sg0
}

Device {
  Name = Drive1
  Drive Index = 0
  Media Type = LTO-3
  Archive Device = /dev/nst0
  AutomaticMount = yes; # when device opened, read it
  AlwaysOpen = yes;
  RemovableMedia = yes;
  RandomAccess = no;
  AutoChanger = yes
  Alert Command = sh -c 'tapeinfo -f %c |grep TapeAlert|cat'
  Maximum Spool Size = 10737418240
  Maximum Job Spool Size = 5368709120
  Spool Directory = /home/bacula
}

This is the same as the one that worked on the Dell (except for changing
from /dev/sg0 to /dev/sg2).

Any ideas on what could be wrong here? As I said, this drive DID work
just fine with that Dell machine running the same OS and bacula. And even
on this machine, I can back up to and restore from the drive, but bacula
doesn't know how to manipulate the changer because it doesn't think there
is a changer there.

Thanks
Michael

[Bacula-users] Multiple File Systems problem

2006-09-11 Thread Lautaro Di Martino
hi all

I have a problem with a partition mounted on the file system when
bacula doing a backup. For example:

I have this directory:
/backup/nn1
/backup/nn2
/backup/nn3

on /backup/nn2 I have mount a lvm partition. When bacula do run job
in /backup for backup it and try read the directory /backup/nn2 a
warning error tell me this:
hostname-fd: Filesystem change prohibited. Will not descend into
/backup/nn2

Ok. I search in the bacula site and I find in File Set Resource this onefs
If I set onefs=yes I can do backups on multiple filesystems
technically, but this no work to me.
Any idea?

Thanks anyway
Sorry for my english.

onefs = yes tells Bacula _not_ to change filesystems.
onefs = no will allow Bacula to switch to other mount points

Re: [Bacula-users] Quick question about requested tape

2006-09-11 Thread Arno Lehmann
Hi,

 My question is:
  do i need do insert the requested tape on the original
 slot(specified when the tape was added to the pool),
  or can I insert the tape in any slot (bacula should search
 for it)
  or insert it on the drive?
 What then? Will issuing a mount command be sufficient for bacula
 to continue the job?

No.

After you change tapes, you have to inform Bacula of these changes. You
could do this manually, using the 'update volume' command, or
(semi-)automatic by using the 'update slots' command. If your
autochanger has barcode support and your tapes are barcoded, this is a
rather quick operation, otherwise use the 'update slots scan' syntax
which will have Bacula load all the tapes from the slots you specify (so
no need to read all tapes when you only changed some slots!) and update
its catalog accordingly.

For example, I use the following command twice a week: 'update slots
scan storage=HPDAT' when I swap magazines for incremental and
differential backups. When, for example for restoring, I only changed
two tapes, the command could be 'update slots=2,3 scan storage=DLT'.

These are real-life examples so I expect them to work for you, too.

More information is, as usualy, in TFM, especially the chapters dealing
with the console commands.

Hope this helps,

Arno

 Thanks

Re: [Bacula-users] WOW

2006-09-11 Thread Arno Lehmann
Hi,

and damn, here are some punctuation marks: ...,,,;;:: ;-)

apart from that-

I don't know Zabbix, but as long as there is any possibility to invoke
some command from the shell that sends the notifications you want I'd
say this is the right place to use a run command.

Set up some script which gives the actual message to Zabbix. Call this
script, either by ssh or directly from the run after command. Command
substitution from Bacula allows you to pass the job name and status to
the script you run, so it's easy to filter and only send a notification
for failed, important jobs, for example. (I use a setup like this as an
interface to Nagios.)

If Zabbix works differently to what I assume, you could have a look at
http://smstools.meinemullemaus.de/ which is a collection of programs to
send SMS using a cellphone or a GSM terminal attached to your server,
which has the advantage of being rather faster than some internet
service, working even when internet connectivity is down, and being
easily integrated into all sorts of software.

All this assuming I understand your problem correctly :-)

Arno

  I've run through the process a couple of times and assume some error on
  my part is the cause of the problem.

  I've tried it with and without bacula-fd ./configured as static.

  In my first attempt I compiled non-static:
  1. start-network failed because the mask was 255.0.0.0 on a 192.168

  2. there was no bacula-fd.conf anywhere after booting.

  TIA,

Although I had recompiled the kernel and enabled CONFIG_SCSI_MULTI_LUN and

So, I quit out of bconsole and stopped bacula and:

So the device is still there.

I hate computers.

Re: [Bacula-users] Nagios plugin

Hi,

On 8/22/2006 11:00 PM, Masopust, Christian wrote:
 Hello Dan,

 as check_bacula is my child it's up to me to answer this :-))

that reminds me... :-)

I upgraded to Bacula 1.39.22 and the check_bacula doesn't work any longer:

 elf:/usr/local/nagios2/libexec # ./check_bacula -H goblin -D dir -K yesindeed
 -M elf-monitor ; echo $?
 BACULA CRITICAL - Director Status: Automatically selected Catalog: BaculaCat

I managed to fix this myself by ignoring a message starting with
Automatically selected Catalog: - just like it's done with Using -
but I found that there's some other problem, too.

During make, I get:

Looking into the technotes file, I noticed the following line:

kes Rename the cram_md5 routine names to be slightly more appropriate
  to what they are doing (challenge and respond).

With some help from the tray-monitor sources, I fixed that, too. The
source now compiles, and my modifications are these:

[Bacula-users] Can't get DVD writing to work

2006-09-11 Thread Scott Simpson
bacula CVS version 2006-09-11

I still can't get bacula to write to a DVD using the latest software on
Kubuntu. Every time I run it I get

dvd.c:432 Error writing part 1 to the DVD:
ERR=Running /usr/bin/growisofs -use-the-force-luke=notray -quiet
-use-the-force-luke=4gms -A 'Bacula
Data' -input-charset=default -iso-level 3 -pad -p 'dvd-handler /
growisofs' -sysid 'BACULADATA' -R -Z /dev/hdc /bacula-spool/DVD6
:-( /usr/bin/growisofs is being executed under sudo, aborting!
See NOTES paragraph in growisofs manual page for further details.

Error while writing part
file:  /usr/bin/growisofs -use-the-force-luke=notray -quiet
-use-the-force-lukMarking
Volume DVD6 in Error in Catalog.
CatReq Job=*System* UpdateMedia VolName=DVD6 VolJobs=0 VolFiles=0 VolBlocks=0

EndTime=1158030791 VolStatus=Error Slot=0 relabel=0 InChanger=0 VolReadTime=0
VolWriteTime=0 VolParts=0

and bconsole hangs (I have to kill it from another window). I read the message
in the growisofs manual page about sudo but I'm not running it under sudo
(but I don't know if bacula is). I'm running bacula-dir as root and growisofs
isn't setuid. Thanks.
Scott
