Of note, 10 Greater White-fronted Geese were in the SE pond (as seen from the viewing stand on the south side of the road). They were difficult to see as they were right against the berm. Seen just over an hour ago. Over 2000 Tundra Swans were present, mostly in the north cell behind the treatment building. I looked for "Bewick's" to no avail! Lots of ducks are in the south pond at the viewing stand, but in the far corner. Rondeau Park was rather quiet today and fewer ducks on the Bay visible from the park. [Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese at Arnprior
Late this afternoon there were 12 GWFG in the Madawaska headpond at Arnprior amongst hundreds of CANG. The flocks of geese were leaving near sunset but may well return tomorrow. The GWFG were in separate groups of 4 (2 ad, 2 juv), 7 (3 ad, 4 juv), and a single adult that flew in near sunset. As the ratio of young to adult birds was different yesterday (apparently only 4 juveniles were present then), there have undoubtedly been more than 12 GWFG present over the past few days. I arrived at 4 p.m. and many geese had drifted out into the headpond and many others had already flown away. --- Begin Message --- 3 Greater White-fronted Geese seen late this morning, at about 30 metres distance in good light. Associating loosely with a large group of Canada Geese, but when something flushed the birds, the three Greater White-fronted Geese flew away separately. Follow this road until it ends, and take an abrupt right onto the 5th Concession of Kepple Township. Watch for a barn with 2 large silos on the left. This is Fire Number 058613. The geese were feedingclose to the road along with several Canada Geese about 50 metres before Concession 5A. There was a also large mixed feeding group of ducks and geese beyond the fencelines behind the barn and along the wetland at the bottom of a small hill. This afternoon at 4:00 I had 4 Greater White-fronted Geese at the Everett Gravel Pits. To get there, go west on Highway 89 from Alliston. At the 4th concession turn right (north). Drive to the next intersection. Turn left (west) onto the 5th concession. The pit is on the right. The best viewing is from the top of the hill. There is just enough room to pull over on the right side of the road. Be careful because this is at the crest of the hill. It is best not to stop at the bottom of the hill because you are much more likely to flush the geese. There were over a thousand Canada’s there this afternoon. [Ontbirds] Greater White Fronted Geese - 3 found, 2 flown, 1 remaining
Patience paid off - 5th trip to Moodie Pond around 5:30 today for a brief couple of minutes 2 GWFGeese paraded past a number of die-hard birders determined not to leave without a great view -the lighting was right and the birds were seen and then they joined the hundreds of geese leaving the pond and flew south. A few of us remained and another GWF Goose was found on the far shore again offering great views as the Canada Geese left all around it until it remained on the shore on its own. Thanks to all the trip leaders this weekend who worked so hard to find birds for us newbies despite high water, heat, biting ladybugs, black flies and mosquitoes. Your dedication is outstanding. Thanks OFO for a great weekend! [Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese and Cackling Geese in Whitby
Ontbirds subscribers, It was quite a good afternoon for viewing arriving geese today. Just northwest of Whitby Harbour, on the soccer fields across from the Abilities Centre at the southeast corner of Victoria St. W. and Gordon St., I found a flock of 68 Cackling Geese in among close to 4000 Canada Geese feeding on the lawns there. Before I could scan through all of the geese, someone came and ran their dogs through the area. This scattered about 90% of the geese into the air and they flew off to both the west and northwest, many flying off north of Hwy 401 - a noisy and impressive sight. In driving down Halls Rd. S. a little later, I found 3 Greater White-fronted Geese feeding with about 80 Canada Geese in the corn stubble on the east side of Halls Rd. S. about 400 metres south of Victoria St. W. They were still present when I left about an hour ago. Directions: Take Hwy 401 to Exit 410 (Brock St.) and proceed south on Brock St. to Victoria St. W. Turn right (west) onto Victoria St. W. and immediately watch for the soccer fields on the left before the lights at Gordon St. across from the Abilities Centre. Many of these geese will likely return to the Whitby Harbour area in the late afternoon. Proceed further west about 2.8 km. on Victoria St. W. where you can turn left (south) on Halls Rd. S. and the fields north and west of Cranberry Marsh, another good spot for geese. Eventually one head was spotted in the main group on this side of the water. Using the arm waving technigue we were able to get a lot of the geese to at least put their heads up. There were four White-fronteds and two Snow geese. Good luck to anyone else - it just takes perseverence and lots of scanning iain CO DSBC(NC) ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese at Aylmer Wildlife Management Area
This afternoon at 2:30 p.m. there were 14 Greater White-fronted Geese at Aylmer Wildlife Management Area.. We haven't visited Aylmer WMA since Nov 28 so don't know if these are the same birds that we reported to Ontbirds that day [13 individuals] or a different flock. A couple of winter listers have reported not seeing the white-fronts at Aylmer over the last few days. If they are the same group as showed up on Nov 28, perhaps they are moving back and forth between here and Aylmer sewage lagoons which are about 5 km to the southwest, which would account for their absence for part of the day. The birds were feeding with Canada Geese in the short-cut grassed field to the north of the ponds within the enclosure. Also present were 120 Tundra Swans, 500+ Canada Geese, 2 male Northern Pintails, 500+ Mallards, 30 Green-winged Teal and 25 American Black Ducks. Directions: Aylmer WMA is northeast of Aylmer in Elgin County. From Hwy 401 drive south on Hwy 73 from Exit 203 [on Elgin Road which becomes Imperial Road once you are in Elgin County]. Turn left/east on College Line. Turn right/south on Hacienda Road and drive to the south end of the Ontario Police College. Turn left/east and follow the laneway to the viewing stands. To get to Aylmer lagoons from Aylmer WMA, drive south on Hacienda Road. Turn right/east on Glencolin Line. Cross over Hwy 73/Imperial Road and drive to Rodgers Road. Turn left/south on Rodgers and drive about 1 km to the sewage lagoons on the right. You may have to walk west along the berms to the 3rd or 4th lagoon. [Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese--Erieau--Chatham-Kent
Winter Listers: Yesterday at dusk Jim Burk found 8 Greater White-fronted Geese near Erieau. I needed those for my Winter List , so went searching for them. They had moved into the Bay in the village of Erieau, along with many Canada Geese. They are easily seen today as there is very little open water. At the fishing tugs there is an active Belted Kingfisher, and very little else ! Directions: Erieau is found off #3 H. [ Talbot Trail], a few km. S/W from Blenheim. Watch for sign. [Ontbirds]Greater White-fronted Geese in Port Hope
Hello Ontbirds subscribers, For those interested in an update on their present whereabouts, Gerry Binsfeld and I viewed the 6 Greater White-fronted Geese in the harbour in Port Hope this morning. All six birds were together among a group of a few dozen Canada Geese. Directions: Hwy 401 to exit 464 (Ontario St.). [Ontbirds]Greater White-fronted Geese Port of Newcastle
Hello Ontbirders This morning I made a detour on my way to Peterborough to check out the Port of Newcastle. As soon as I stepped out of my car an untagged juvenile Trumpeter Swan and a yellow-wing tagged adult #075 ran over to me. They seemed to have me mistaken for someone else (someone with food no doubt). When I left about 30 minutes later, they again rushed me. The adult seemed to be considering eating the car keys out of my hand. In the harbour I easily located the 4 Greater White-fronted Geese together in a large flock of Canadas. There was also one other "white-fronted" goose. It was a hybrid, I would guess a domestic x Canada cross. In addition to the white forecrown it also had orange legs, but the bill was black and the bird was as large as the Canadas it was hanging out with beside the parking area. Also of interest when I stepped out of my car in Peterborough I was greeted with the sound of a Northern Cardinal singing. Directions to Port of Newcastle: Exit Highway 401 at Mill Street exit 440. Go south under the bridge. Turn left at the all way stop. Follow the road south to the parking lot by the lake. [Ontbirds]Greater White-fronted Geese...No
I went to go see the geese yesterday at the Port of Newcastle and only found a large group of Canadas and Mallards. So i took a drive along Lakeshore Rd. to Port Hope and found a Northern Shrike along the way, along with about 6 Horned Larks and a flock of about 300 Snow Buntings sitting in a field just outside of Port Hope. A quick drive down to the waterfront at Port Hope proved to show no geese. I do not know if they have moved on, but hopefully they will turn up Chris Street _ ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds]Greater White-fronted Geese, Port Hope
At 1:30 pm there were six Greater White-fronted Geese on the ice at the Port Hope Yacht Club. This is at the head of the channel immediately to the east of the Cameco plant, not in the river. The geese were with dozens of Canada Geese, but luckily they were on the outer edge of the flock and thus nearest to the road. They all had their heads tucked under their wings, but there was no mistaking the orange legs and dark barring on the undersides of two of the birds. The birds were seen from Hayward St. in Port Hope. From 401 to Ontario St. thence to Mill as per Margaret Bain's instructions, but Hayward does not cross the river and you can't access it directly from Mill St. I believe the route is Mill south to Robertson, right (east) to John, south on John under the old railway bridge to Hayward, turn left and the head of the channel is on your right hand side. Jim - you turned off a hundred yards too soon! I was barking at Dave for not following you when we saw the channel. [Ontbirds]Greater White-fronted Geese Cobourg Jan 27
Clive Goodwin discovered 4 Greater White-fronted Geese on the ice at Cobourg harbour this morning, Sunday January 27, and they were still there at 1pm. Presumably these birds are part of the group that has been commuting between Port Hope and Cobourg for the last week or so. Gull-watching at Cobourg harbour has been good recently, especially on days when there is plenty of ice in the harbour. Several Glaucous and Iceland are usually present with one or more Thayer's and an adult Lesser Black-backed some days. Roger Frost saw the female Barrow's Goldeneye again today at the mouth of the Port Hope harbour. Directions to Cobourg harbour: Leave Hwy. 401 at Division St., Exit 474, and go south on Division to the harbour. Drive west around the harbour to the parking lot on the west side. The 5 Greater White-fronted Geese were asleep on the ice among the Canadas at the foot of the Ganaraska River in Port Hope at noon today. This was just where the river empties into the harbour and right by the parking lot at the foot of Mill Street. There is a small flock of goldeneye at the mouth of the harbour and among them for the last week or so has been a well-studied female Barrow's which I thought I saw again today. 4 adult Greater White Fronted Geese were found by Ken Teasdale this morning. I went looking for them and found them at 1pm and watched them for 30 min. [Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese and Snow Geese nr St. Clair NWA
HI there, While looking for stuff down at the St. Clair National Wildlife Area, my wife and I found a huge flock of about 3500 Canada Geese feeding on corn, etc, near the Bradley Farms, near the wildlife area. ie. Baited area. In amongst these geese were 2 Greater White-fronts, as well as 2 Snow Geese (Blue). We noted several small, small geese, but at the distance they were out there, and in the confusion of them milling around, couldn't definitively say that there were Cackling geese in with the masses. No doubt these birds had gathered there sometime during the day, but this was about 4 pm. So not sure how much of the day they are present there. Later we were down the road a piece when they decided to head out to roost in the St. Clair NWA for the night. What a sight and sound to see them stream over there. The marshes are open and lots of waterfowl are present, but mainly monocultures of Mallards and congregations of Canadas. If in the wildlife management area, on the access road to the parking area, or along the dikes on Balmoral, which runs along the side of the management area, note that the waterfowl are extremely agitated, and easily frightened since they are a lot gun-shy. Please use your car as a blind and don't walk out on the marsh trail from the parking area in the wildlife area, that leads to the tower. It may not be allowed anyway, by the wildlife management people there, but would certainly result in thousands of ducks going wild over your head. Give those poor quackers and honkers a break. Pete and Sue Read Directions. The St. Clair National Wildlife Area is on Town Line Rd, southwest of Chatham north of the Thames River. From the 401, take the Bloomfield Exit, number 81, north and into Chatham's west end, then River View Line (left) southwest to Jacob Rd, where you can cross the Thames heading north(right turn). Take Maple Rd southwest (left) to Town Line. Going north (right) you will come to Balmoral, and turning left and then immediately right just over the bridge there is an access road to the wildlife area. To get to where we saw the geese, instead of turning right onto Town Line, take a left, and an immediate right just over a small bridge, putting you onto Bradley Line. Follow the curve of the road which leads to the southwest to almost the end, and then look out to the north where there is a large field with a dike and tree line on the far side, bordering the marshes. The baited area is over on the far side of the field. There will be a drainage ditch on the north side where you are, and one running out to the north to your left and further to your right. Two large heaps of junk carrots (look like dirty orange mounds) are out past the left drain, near where the geese might congregate. Keep checking the area throughout the day, and the geese might arrive sometime, off and on.
[Ontbirds]Greater White-fronted Geese Cobourg harbour
5 Greater White-fronted Geese were discovered in Cobourg harbour at 1pm today, January 11th. They were swimming together in a small group among hundreds of Canada Geese and other waterfowl. Their dull orange bills suggested they were of the Greenland race. The local hotline brought several birders to see them, but they could not be found after 2pm and may have flown west. A large flock of gulls on the water in the harbour included a nice adult Thayer's Gull and one Bonaparte's Gull. One or two Glaucous and Iceland gulls have been present recently as well as a first-year Lesser Black-backed Gull.
