[Ontbirds] Greater White-Fronted Geese Milton

2019-03-23 Thread Rick Eckley via ONTBIRDS
There are currently (3:50pm) two Greater White-Fronted Geese at 8th Line
and Brittania Road in Milton, in a flooded farm field at the NW corner of
this intersection. Also present is a White Morph Snow Goose and a number of
Tundra Swans. We had an adult, male Bald Eagle flyover as well.

This intersection can be reached by heading north on Ford Drive off the QEW.

There are six Greater White-fronted Geese on Stoney Creek mtn in a flooded
field across from the Vinemount sign on Ridge Rd. between 10th Rd. E and 8th
Rd. E. No doubt these are the same 6 found by Mike MacLeod at a nearby
location yesterday. The number of waterfowl has greatly increased since
earlier this morning, including many (60+) Northern Pintails and American
Wigeons etc. Earlier there was also a Ring-necked Duck in the mix.

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese Ridgetown S.T.P.

2017-03-12 Thread Blake A. Mann via ONTBIRDS

Hi all,

Although there is quite a bit of ice, waterfowl is abundant at Ridgetown
sewage lagoons. Of note, 10 Greater White-fronted Geese were in the SE pond
(as seen from the viewing stand on the south side of the road). They were
difficult to see as they were right against the berm. Seen just over an
hour ago.

Over 2000 Tundra Swans were present, mostly in the north cell behind the
treatment building. I looked for "Bewick's" to no avail!

Lots of ducks are in the south pond at the viewing stand, but in the far
corner.

Rondeau Park was rather quiet today and fewer ducks on the Bay visible from
the park. I did not see the Eurasian Wigeon of last week. There were
actually two males last weekend!

Directions: Ridgetown Lagoons Directions: Highway 401 exit #109 south on
C-K Rd. 20 to Gosnell Line. Turn right and go to intersection at grain
elevator. Jog left to Mitton Line and go about 400m. Viewing stand on left,
or go a bit farther to treatment plant on right and go into lane to view
north lagoons.

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese at Arnprior

2016-11-09 Thread Michael Runtz
Late this afternoon there were 12 GWFG in the Madawaska headpond at Arnprior
amongst hundreds of CANG. The flocks of geese were leaving near sunset but
may well return tomorrow. The GWFG were in separate groups of 4 (2 ad, 2
juv), 7 (3 ad, 4 juv), and a single adult that flew in near sunset. As the
ratio of young to adult birds was different yesterday (apparently only 4
juveniles were present then), there have undoubtedly been more than 12 GWFG
present over the past few days. I arrived at 4 p.m. and many geese had
drifted out into the headpond and many others had already flown away.

The headpond is at the east end of Baskin Drive, which comes off Daniel
Street just north of Highway 417 (north of the White Lake Road).

Happy Birding!

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese near Owen Sound Mar 15, 2016

2016-03-15 Thread Jerry Walsh via ONTBIRDS
--- Begin Message ---
3 Greater White-fronted Geese seen late this morning, at about 30 metres
distance in good light. Associating loosely with a large group of Canada Geese,
but when something flushed the birds, the three Greater White-fronted Geese
flew away separately.
One way to reach the location from Owen Sound is to take Hwy 21"south" ( which
is actually west at this point) then right onto Bruce Road 10.
Turn right again onto Sideroad 5. Follow this road until it ends, and take an
abrupt right onto the 5th Concession of Kepple Township. Watch for a barn with
2 large silos on the left. This is Fire Number 058613. The geese were
feedingclose to the road along with several Canada Geese about 50 metres before
Concession 5A.
There was a also large mixed feeding group of ducks and geese beyond the
fencelines behind the barn and along the wetland at the bottom of a small hill.
They were out of binocular range for us, but a scope view might turn up some
good birds.
FYI this can also be a very good locations for Autumn migrant Sandhill Cranes.

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese, Sweets Corners

2016-01-08 Thread Ken Burrell
Hi Birders,

I had a group of 4 Greater White-fronted Geese amongst a large flock of
Canada's (~500) sitting on the lake at around 1:30pm. The group appeared to
be comprised of a single adult and 3 young birds. The location was opposite
1351 Lakeshore Road, 100m. west of Reicheld Road.

I also had a pair of Common Raven's on my drive home, in Brant County on
Bishopsgate Road, where Hwy. 403 intersects, attending to fresh roadkill (
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S26775898).

Directions to the GWFG: coming west from Dunnville on Rainham Road (#3),
take the first road (Reicheld Road) south (left) after Sweets Corners.
Reicheld will end at the lake, keep an eye out for a large flock of CANG on
the lake. The birds could be moving around a little bit, so be sure to
check the shoreline as needed.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese St. Clair NWA

2015-11-29 Thread Blake A. Mann
On the way home from Point Pelee, I briefly stopped at St. Clair NWA.
Thousands of geese and swans are present there and the surrounding fields.
Near the entrance I spotted at least 3 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE along
with 8 SANDHILL CRANES and a single SNOW GOOSE.

I did not spend much time there, so there are likely other things to find!

Nearby at the NE corner of Rivard Line and Heron Line, I saw a SNOWY OWL
sitting in the field. First one I have seen this fall, but this area is
known for numbers of Snowy Owls.

Directions:
St. Clair is on Townline Road between Heron Line and Belle Rose Line. From
west of Chatham, head north on Bear Line to Pain Court Line. Head west on
Pain Court Line through village until you hit Townline Road. Go north on
Townline Road.

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese, Everett Gravel Pit, near Alliston.

2015-11-23 Thread John Schmelefske
This afternoon at 4:00 I had 4 Greater White-fronted Geese at the Everett
Gravel Pits.

To get there, go west on Highway 89 from Alliston. At the 4th concession turn
right (north). Drive to the next intersection. Turn left (west) onto the 5th
concession. The pit is on the right. The best viewing is from the top of the
hill. There is just enough room to pull over on the right side of the road.
Be careful because this is at the crest of the hill. It is best not to stop at
the bottom of the hill because you are much more likely to flush the geese.
There were over a thousand Canada’s there this afternoon.

[Ontbirds] Greater White Fronted Geese - 3 found, 2 flown, 1 remaining

2014-09-28 Thread Ellen Horak
Patience paid off - 5th trip to Moodie Pond around 5:30 today for a brief
couple of minutes 2 GWFGeese paraded past a number of die-hard birders
determined not to leave without a great view -the lighting was right and the
birds were seen and then they joined the hundreds of geese leaving the pond and
flew south. A few of us remained and another GWF Goose was found on the far
shore again offering great views as the Canada Geese left all around it until
it remained on the shore on its own.

Thanks to all the trip leaders this weekend who worked so hard to find birds
for us newbies despite high water, heat, biting ladybugs, black flies and
mosquitoes. Your dedication is outstanding. Thanks OFO for a great weekend!

Will try to post pics to our blog in the next day or so - we are still on the
road...

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese and Cackling Geese in Whitby

2014-03-23 Thread Glenn Coady
Ontbirds subscribers,

It was quite a good afternoon for viewing arriving geese today. Just northwest
of Whitby Harbour, on the soccer fields across from the Abilities Centre at the
southeast corner of Victoria St. W. and Gordon St., I found a flock of 68
Cackling Geese in among close to 4000 Canada Geese feeding on the lawns there.
Before I could scan through all of the geese, someone came and ran their dogs
through the area. This scattered about 90% of the geese into the air and they
flew off to both the west and northwest, many flying off north of Hwy 401 - a
noisy and impressive sight.

In driving down Halls Rd. S. a little later, I found 3 Greater White-fronted
Geese feeding with about 80 Canada Geese in the corn stubble on the east side
of Halls Rd. S. about 400 metres south of Victoria St. W. They were still
present when I left about an hour ago.

Directions: Take Hwy 401 to Exit 410 (Brock St.) and proceed south on Brock St.
to Victoria St. W. Turn right (west) onto Victoria St. W. and immediately watch
for the soccer fields on the left before the lights at Gordon St. across from
the Abilities Centre. Many of these geese will likely return to the Whitby
Harbour area in the late afternoon. Proceed further west about 2.8 km. on
Victoria St. W. where you can turn left (south) on Halls Rd. S. and the fields
north and west of Cranberry Marsh, another good spot for geese.

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese at Rondeau

2014-02-22 Thread Jim Burk
Early this morning there were four Greater White-fronted Geese just east of
Shrewsbury near Rondeau. They were very skittish and proceeded to fly towards
Rondeau Bay where they are currently not visible.

They should come back out to feed
at some point.

Jim Burk

Directions:

Exit highway 401 at Kent Rd. 15. Proceed south to New Scotland Line. Turn right
and head towards Shrewsbury. They tend to feed anywhere along this road but
usually between Mull Rd. and Shrewsbury. There was a dead (long winter) Tundra
Swan right beside the road where they were feeding.

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese at Ridgetown

2012-03-10 Thread Blake A. Mann
Ridgetown Lagoons had a total of 12 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE today. Six
were swimming in the north back pond, and another six were on the east dike of
that pond. Those on the dike were mainly visible, by scope, from the viewing
stand.
Also present was a total of 22 SNOW GEESE (6 of blue form). Nine white and one
blue were visible on the north dike, while the others were visible on the east
dike (north of Mitton) only from the viewing stand at the south pond south of
Mitton.
There were hundreds of Tundra Swans and Canada Geese. Ridgetown always
attracts a large number of geese and swans!
A good assortment of ducks was present as well.

Nothing really noteworthy at Rondeau Park today. Some Eastern Towhees are now
in and dozens of Song Sparrows.

Lagoon Directions: Ridgetown is about 30 minutes east of Chatham. Exit 401
at Rd. 21 (#109) and head south. From the main corner in Ridgetown at Erie
St. and Main St., follow Erie St. north about 1.5 km to Mitton Line/Palmer
St. Turn left onto Mitton Line and go past fertilizer plant. Lagoons are
on the south (left) side and you will see a viewing stand. Do not enter
beyond fence.
You can also view the north ponds by driving up the laneway on the north side
of Mitton and around the buildings.

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese at Aylmer Wildlife Management Area

2012-02-07 Thread Dave Martin
Yesterday [Feb 6] at 3:30 p.m. and today [Feb 7] at 4:45 p.m. 4 Greater
White-fronted Geese were present at Aylmer Wildlife Management Area
along with about 200 Canada Geese and 50 Tundra Swans. We also checked
this morning about 8:00 a.m. but only a few Canada Geese were present
along with the swans. It appears that the geese head out early to feed
somewhere unknown. Hence, the best time to look would be in the
afternoon after they return from their morning feed.

On a side note, a birder from southwestern Elgin County reported that he
had an American Woodcock doing a courtship flight and calls from 6:00 to
6:30 p.m. on Saturday evening February 4.

Direction to Aylmer WMA
Aylmer WMA is located about 5 km northeast of Aylmer in Elgin County,
Ontario behind the Ontario Police College. From exit 203 on the Hwy 401
drive south on Elgin Road [formerly Hwy 73] which becomes Imperial Road
in Elgin County. Turn left on College Line and then right on Hacienda
Road. At the south end of the Police College property turn left into the
laneway leading to the WMA. The geese and swans were in the large pond
in front of the viewing stands.

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese at Lee Browns

2011-03-16 Thread William Corrigan
Hi Ontbirders,

Today I visited the Lee Brown Waterfowl Management Area near Long Point and
found that the Greater White-fronted Geese reported yesterday by Jeff
Skevington were still in the fields north of the road and visible from the
viewing platform. From 2:00-3:00 today I counted 8 Greater White-fronted
Geese in a flock with several Tundra Swans. A scope is required to find them
as they are far out in the field. Also seen were large numbers of waterfowl.

To get there take highway 59 to Long Point and turn right onto Lakeshore
road until you reach the viewing platform at Lee Brown Waterfowl Management
Area.

Hello Ontbirders,

Best birds while birding the Long Point area today were 14 Greater
White-fronted
Geese near Lee Browns. My Dad spotted them and we watched them for about 15
minutes at ~2:30 pm today. They were with a large mixed flock of waterfowl in
the fields north of the road visible from Lee Browns. The closest house is
number 2597 Lakeshore Road. There are lots of waterfowl coming in with the
warmer weather now (20 species seen today).

To get there, take highway 59 to Long Point, then follow Lakeshore Road west to

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese over Thickson's Woods in Whitby

2011-03-13 Thread Glenn Coady

Ontbirds subscribers,

Today I observed many large flocks of migrant Canada Geese crossing Lake
Ontario and coming in overhead above my house. Just after 5:15 p.m., I noticed
a group of 6 Greater White-fronted Geese in a flock of 160+ Canada Geese flying
northwest over Thickson Woods. They were quite low overhead and may possibly be
in search of somewhere quite local to roost this evening.

Thickson Woods is located at the southern terminus of Thickson Rd. S. in
Whitby. From Exit 412 on Hwy 401 go south on Thickson Rd. S. to it terminus at

On December 5 (Sunday) 47 White-fronted Geese in different flocks departed
between 2:30 and 3:00 PM at the Canard River site in LaSalle, apparently to
feed in the surrounding farmland. The largest flock had 28 birds, the smallest
had 2 birds flying with Canada Geese. The two Snow Geese were present, as well
as one flyby Rough-legged Hawk (dark morph).

LaSalle adjoins the south side of Windsor in Essex County. The following was
given by Paul Pratt who initially posted these geese: The birds were at 9000
Canard Drive which is mid way between Malden Road and County Rd. 8 at the

[Ontbirds] Greater White-Fronted Geese and Snow Geese Carp []

2010-12-05 Thread Iain Wilkes

At 7:30 am I arrived back at Carp Rd just south of the town to see if I could
get the White-fronted that I missed last night as I left before they returned
at the end of the day.I was soon joined by two other birders staring at the
hundreds of geese hundered down combined with the bitter wind making it rather
challenging. Eventually one head was spotted in the main group on this side of
the water. Using the arm waving technigue we were able to get a lot of the
geese to at least put their heads up. There were four White-fronteds and two
Snow geese.

Good luck to anyone else - it just takes perseverence and lots of scanning

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese at Aylmer Wildlife Management Area

2010-12-04 Thread Dave Martin
This afternoon at 2:30 p.m. there were 14 Greater White-fronted Geese at
Aylmer Wildlife Management Area..

We haven't visited Aylmer WMA since Nov 28 so don't know if these are
the same birds that we reported to Ontbirds that day [13 individuals] or
a different flock. A couple of winter listers have reported not seeing
the white-fronts at Aylmer over the last few days. If they are the same
group as showed up on Nov 28, perhaps they are moving back and forth
between here and Aylmer sewage lagoons which are about 5 km to the
southwest, which would account for their absence for part of the day.

The birds were feeding with Canada Geese in the short-cut grassed field
to the north of the ponds within the enclosure. Also present were 120
Tundra Swans, 500+ Canada Geese, 2 male Northern Pintails, 500+
Mallards, 30 Green-winged Teal and 25 American Black Ducks.

Directions:
Aylmer WMA is northeast of Aylmer in Elgin County. From Hwy 401 drive
south on Hwy 73 from Exit 203 [on Elgin Road which becomes Imperial Road
once you are in Elgin County]. Turn left/east on College Line. Turn
right/south on Hacienda Road and drive to the south end of the Ontario
Police College. Turn left/east and follow the laneway to the viewing
stands.

To get to Aylmer lagoons from Aylmer WMA, drive south on Hacienda Road.
Turn right/east on Glencolin Line. Cross over Hwy 73/Imperial Road and
drive to Rodgers Road. Turn left/south on Rodgers and drive about 1 km
to the sewage lagoons on the right. You may have to walk west along the
berms to the 3rd or 4th lagoon.

[Ontbirds]Greater White-fronted Geese Port of Newcastle

2008-02-16 Thread Carol Horner

Hello Ontbirders

This morning I made a detour on my way to Peterborough to check out
the Port of Newcastle. As soon as I stepped out of my car an untagged
juvenile Trumpeter Swan and a yellow-wing tagged adult #075 ran over
to me. They seemed to have me mistaken for someone else (someone with
food no doubt). When I left about 30 minutes later, they again rushed
me. The adult seemed to be considering eating the car keys out of my
hand.
In the harbour I easily located the 4 Greater White-fronted Geese
together in a large flock of Canadas.
There was also one other "white-fronted" goose. It was a hybrid, I
would guess a domestic x Canada cross. In addition to the white
forecrown it also had orange legs, but the bill was black and the
bird was as large as the Canadas it was hanging out with beside the
parking area.

Also of interest when I stepped out of my car in Peterborough I was
greeted with the sound of a Northern Cardinal singing.

Directions to Port of Newcastle:

Exit Highway 401 at Mill Street exit 440. Go south under the bridge.
Turn left at the all way stop. Follow the road south to the parking
lot by the lake.

[Ontbirds]Greater White-fronted Geese, Port Hope

2008-02-03 Thread Joyce Collier-Brown
At 1:30 pm there were six Greater White-fronted Geese on the ice at
the Port Hope Yacht Club. This is at the head of the channel
immediately to the east of the Cameco plant, not in the river.

The geese were with dozens of Canada Geese, but luckily they were on
the outer edge of the flock and thus nearest to the road. They all
had their heads tucked under their wings, but there was no mistaking
the orange legs and dark barring on the undersides of two of the birds.

The birds were seen from Hayward St. in Port Hope. From 401 to
Ontario St. thence to Mill as per Margaret Bain's instructions, but
Hayward does not cross the river and you can't access it directly
from Mill St. I believe the route is Mill south to Robertson, right
(east) to John, south on John under the old railway bridge to
Hayward, turn left and the head of the channel is on your right hand
side.

Jim - you turned off a hundred yards too soon! I was barking at Dave
for not following you when we saw the channel.

2008-01-27 Thread M. Bain
Clive Goodwin discovered 4 Greater White-fronted Geese on the ice at Cobourg

Presumably these birds are part of the group that has been commuting between
Port Hope and Cobourg for the last week or so.
Gull-watching at Cobourg harbour has been good recently, especially on days
when there is plenty of ice in the harbour. Several Glaucous and Iceland are
usually present with one or more Thayer's and an adult Lesser Black-backed
some days.

Roger Frost saw the female Barrow's Goldeneye again today at the mouth of
the Port Hope harbour.

Directions to Cobourg harbour: Leave Hwy. 401 at Division St., Exit 474, and

[Ontbirds]Greater White Fronted Geese, Bruce Peninsula

2008-01-05 Thread ALFRED RAAB
4 adult Greater White Fronted Geese were found by Ken Teasdale this morning.
I went looking for them and found them at 1pm and watched them for 30 min. They
were feeding in an open field near a drainage ditch. It appears they are of the
Greenland race with orange bills and lots of dark barring on the belly on 3
birds.

Directions:
Go 25 km north from Wiarton, turn left (west) of Spry Rd, go for 2km then turn
left (south) on The Burry Rd (there is no road sign). Go about 500m to the
drainage ditch. The geese were seen on the east side of the road on the north
side of the ditch about 200m from the road.

[Ontbirds]Greater White-fronted Geese-Echo Bay, Algoma

2007-04-01 Thread Kirk Zufelt
Birder's:

As of 1630, Sunday,April 1st there were 19 Greater White-fronted Geese just
east of Echo Bay. They were with several hundred Canada Geese off Barr River
Rd.
To get there take the Barr River Road exit off Hwy. 17 a few miles east of
Echo Bay. Go north to the first intersection- Government Road and turn right
(east). The geese were about 100yds. to the east of the intersection on the
south side of the road just east of the fence line in the deep grass.

[Ontbirds] Greater White-fronted Geese and Snow Geese nr St. Clair NWA

2006-12-17 Thread Pete Read
HI there,

While looking for stuff down at the St. Clair National Wildlife Area, my
wife and I found a huge flock of about 3500 Canada Geese feeding on corn,
etc, near the Bradley Farms, near the wildlife area. ie. Baited area. In
amongst these geese were 2 Greater White-fronts, as well as 2 Snow Geese
(Blue). We noted several small, small geese, but at the distance they were
out there, and in the confusion of them milling around, couldn't
definitively say that there were Cackling geese in with the masses.

No doubt these birds had gathered there sometime during the day, but this
was about 4 pm. So not sure how much of the day they are present there.
Later we were down the road a piece when they decided to head out to roost
in the St. Clair NWA for the night. What a sight and sound to see them
stream over there. The marshes are open and lots of waterfowl are present,
but mainly monocultures of Mallards and congregations of Canadas.

If in the wildlife management area, on the access road to the parking area,
or along the dikes on Balmoral, which runs along the side of the management
area, note that the waterfowl are extremely agitated, and easily frightened
since they are a lot gun-shy. Please use your car as a blind and don't walk
out on the marsh trail from the parking area in the wildlife area, that
leads to the tower. It may not be allowed anyway, by the wildlife management
people there, but would certainly result in thousands of ducks going wild
over your head. Give those poor quackers and honkers a break.

Pete and Sue Read

Directions.

The St. Clair National Wildlife Area is on Town Line Rd, southwest of
Chatham north of the Thames River. From the 401, take the Bloomfield Exit,
number 81, north and into Chatham's west end, then River View Line (left)
southwest to Jacob Rd, where you can cross the Thames heading north(right
turn). Take Maple Rd southwest (left) to Town Line. Going north (right) you
will come to Balmoral, and turning left and then immediately right just over
the bridge there is an access road to the wildlife area. To get to where we
saw the geese, instead of turning right onto Town Line, take a left, and an
immediate right just over a small bridge, putting you onto Bradley Line.
Follow the curve of the road which leads to the southwest to almost the end,
and then look out to the north where there is a large field with a dike and
tree line on the far side, bordering the marshes. The baited area is over on
the far side of the field. There will be a drainage ditch on the north side
where you are, and one running out to the north to your left and further to
your right. Two large heaps of junk carrots (look like dirty orange mounds)
are out past the left drain, near where the geese might congregate. Keep
checking the area throughout the day, and the geese might arrive sometime,
off and on.

[Ontbirds]Greater White-fronted Geese Cobourg harbour

2006-01-11 Thread M. Bain
5 Greater White-fronted Geese were discovered in Cobourg harbour at 1pm today,
January 11th. They were swimming together in a small group among hundreds of
Canada Geese and other waterfowl. Their dull orange bills suggested they were
of the Greenland race. The local hotline brought several birders to see them,
but they could not be found after 2pm and may have flown west.
A large flock of gulls on the water in the harbour included a nice adult
Thayer's Gull and one Bonaparte's Gull. One or two Glaucous and Iceland gulls
have been present recently as well as a first-year Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Hi All!

I've been asked by a few people to try and update the Ivory Gull situation
daily.

To the best of my knowledge, the bird was not located today (if you know
otherwise, please let me know!), though it could still be in the area.

If I hear anything different, I will post right away.

Good birding!
Sarah
