Re: [Blind-Computing] Computer suddenly doesn't recognize USBportordevice

2009-05-07 Thread Jacob Kruger
Well, then, chances are that either there's a driver/hardware issue on that
machine - if other USB devices don't want to work either, or the specific
port itsself is a minor problem, but, yes, best is to test another USB
connecting device first.

What have you all tried to get it recognised?

Sometimes I take my USB cables out, and tap them on the desk a bit, or
else at least try unplugging/plugging them in/out a few times since I'm
pretty sure they do sometimes obtain a bit of atmospheric wear and tear,
but this might not be relevant at all.

Have you tried other USB devices in the same port, or the external drive
connected to any other computers?

Have you tried the applications key to delete the folders? Place your

press the enter key. That should take care of the problem.

OK

What version of Windows are you using?
I can give you step by step for re-installing your USB drivers on your
machine for XP. I have actually copied this below from my web site. I had
Vista taken off my machine so someone with Vista would have to check if the
same steps would work with Vista.

To do this

Unplug all your USB devices with the exception of your keyboard and mouse if
you use one.

Go to Control Panel and then open the System applet.

Pres control tab until you hear hardware.

Press tab until you hear Device Manager. Press space to open this.

Press tab once to go into a tree view of devices.

You need to cursor down until you hear Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Press the right cursor key to open this view.

You now need to find the core USB driver for your PC. This may be named
after your processor. On my PC this driver is called

Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host

Highlight this line and press the delete key.

Confirm that you want to delete the driver. Windows will immediately start
to re-install it.

After a few seconds Windows will recognise your keyboard and mouse.

Exit device manager and restart your windows.

After windows have completely reloaded start to plug in your USB devices one
by one. As you would have cleared the windows database of devices there is a
chance that any problems will now disappear as windows re-constructs it USB
device database.

If this does not work and your hardware is not faulty then I am afraid a
system restore or windows re-install is indicated.

Does the external drive have a power supply?
Is there any sign that you can tell that power is going through to the

Are you able to see the power light come on? If not is there any activity

If there is a power supply is this emitting heat or cold?

If the drive is powered from the USB Port is there an optional connection

Hi,
I was just going to say that you should take a look in Device Manager and
try updating the drivers for the individual USB devices. Also, if that
branch of the tree view for USB is closed, Windows thinks all is well.
I have seen Windows throw a driver for USB with no apparent reason for it.
Good luck.

Re: [Blind-Computing] unable to remove unwanted folders from a drive

2009-05-07 Thread The Cluless Wanderer

Hi Trepan Singh,
Windows XP is notorious for not letting you delete files and folders. I've
had several instances where I couldn't delete folders and files. Here's a
easy to use program that will do the trick for you.

Unlocker for Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003
The program is free ware.
You can read about the program from this web site:
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
You can download any previous versions for Windows 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista

From this website:

http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/old/

Hope this helps solve your problem.

Hi,
I was just going to say that you should take a look in Device Manager and
try updating the drivers for the individual USB devices. Also, if that
branch of the tree view for USB is closed, Windows thinks all is well.
I have seen Windows throw a driver for USB with no apparent reason for it.
Good luck.

Good suggestions, John, and I have tried the cord in another USB port, as
well as connecting my device to another computer, on which it works. This
tells me I probably have some kind of USB issue, so I'm going to do one
more
thing, which is to connect another USB device to the computer and see if

Hi Nancy,
Have you tried a different usb port on the off chance that it's the
port and not the device that's giving you trouble?
Also, if you can disconnect the cord at the other end, try another usb
cord and see what happens.

Try turning on keyboard help and see if everything being typed is in

If so, try tapping them etc. to see if you can get it unstuck.

OK

What version of Windows are you using?
I can give you step by step for re-installing your USB drivers on your
machine for XP. I have actually copied this below from my web site. I had
Vista taken off my machine so someone with Vista would have to check if
the

same steps would work with Vista.

To do this

Unplug all your USB devices with the exception of your keyboard and mouse
if

you use one.

After windows have completely reloaded start to plug in your USB devices
one
by one. As you would have cleared the windows database of devices there is
a
chance that any problems will now disappear as windows re-constructs it
USB

device database.

If this does not work and your hardware is not faulty then I am afraid a
system restore or windows re-install is indicated.

We need a little more information.
Does the external drive have a power supply?
Is there any sign that you can tell that power is going through to the
unit?
Are you able to see the power light come on? If not is there any
activity

that you can feel if the unit is powered on?
If there is a power supply is this emitting heat or cold?

If the drive is powered from the USB Port is there an optional connection
to
increase power to the drive?
Have you installed any other devices since yesterday?
Have you tried plugging the drive into another USB Port?
Have you tried plugging another device into this Port to check it works -
a
USB Pen drive for example.
Do you have access to a friend's computer to check to see if the drive
works
on another machine?

If it is not a hardware or power issue There are steps for you to take
to
re-install your USB drivers which I can post. However this will
obviously

not work if there is a power or hardware failure issue so information on
this is the best initial step.

Hi,
This means the Windows Installer, Nulsoft etc. or some uninstaller package
has been removed in part, or is missing files or has been corrupted.
There is no way at this point to uninstall the program correctly.
If you're brave, it's on to deleting folders, shortcut and Registry entries
dealing with the program.
A system restore and a registry export first are advisable.

So far, no known power or hardware issue. Works on another computer,
and I need to find a USB device to plug in to this one to try that
option. Hard drive has its own power supply, so don't need to power it
 from the computer.

 Thanks,

We need a little more information.
Does the external drive have a power supply?
Is there any sign that you can tell that power is going through to
 the unit?
Are you able to see the power light come on? If not is there any
activity that you can feel if the unit is powered on?
If there is a power supply is this emitting heat or cold?

If the drive is powered from the USB Port is there an optional
connection to increase power to the drive?
Have you installed any other devices since yesterday?
Have you tried plugging the drive into another USB Port?
Have you tried plugging another device into this Port to check it
works - a USB Pen drive for example.
Do you have access to a friend's computer to check to see if the
 drive works on another machine?

If it is not a hardware or power issue There are steps for you to
take to re-install your USB drivers which I can post. However this
will obviously not work if there is a power or hardware failure issue
so information on this is the best initial step.

 Two Achilles' Heels
 By: Dr. Mark W. Hendrickson
 Thursday, May 07, 2009
Two sore spots could sink this administration.
In my recent article Checkmate, I made the case that President Obama's
 grand strategy
has outfoxed the opposition, dooming us all to a massive increase in the
 scope and
power of Uncle Sam. Is the situation hopeless? Never! If Americans who
 believe in
individual liberty and free markets rally to the cause, then we may some
 day look
back on the current gloomy period as the Valley Forge winter of a new
 American revolution.
The Achilles' heel of Obama is most likely the hubris that is common to
 those who
seek nothing less than the total transformation of a society (of our
 economy,
were Obama's exact words). In their consuming desire to be the Great
 Leader, such
individuals shed restraint and grab impatiently for more power. In a
 society where
people prize their individual rights and retain a residual distrust of Big
 Government,
overreaching may prove to be Obama's fatal strategic miscalculation.
In recent decades, Americans have been like frogs in the chef's pot. Just
 as frogs
don't realize they are being boiled alive when the heat is turned up
 gradually, we
Americans have been lulled into passivity by the gradual, decades-long
 expansion
of government power. If we don't wake up and jump out of the cauldron, we,
 like the
frogs, will be doomed-in our case, by losing our freedom and prosperity to
 socialistic
Big Brother. Obama's bold power grabs are startling us, waking us out of
 our torpor,
giving rise to tea parties, righteous indignation, and a renewed will to
 resist the
 encroachments of tyranny.
Let's get the s word out of the closet and into the open. I abhor
 name-calling,
and have never labeled President Obama a socialist-even after I heard
 through the
grapevine that some Democrats were describing him as such at Washington
 cocktail
parties. But since socialism is the specific term for government ownership
 of various

Took the end which goes into USB port on computer and dampened it (like
you

used to when you plugged in your mic or keyboard or guitar...); soon as I
plugged it into the USB jac on computer in question, hard drive
automatically came on and computer started back up. Jeese... Thought I had
turned it off yesterday! Anyway, needless to say, computer recognized
external hard drive! Still keeping instructions in case needed in future!

Thanks again,

OK

What version of Windows are you using?
I can give you step by step for re-installing your USB drivers on
your machine for XP. I have actually copied this below from my web
site. I had Vista taken off my machine so someone with Vista would
have to check if the same steps would work with Vista.

To do this

Unplug all your USB devices with the exception of your keyboard and
mouse if you use one.

This may be
named after your processor. On my PC this driver is called

Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host

Highlight this line and press the delete key.

Confirm that you want to delete the driver. Windows will immediately
start to re-install it.

After a few seconds Windows will recognise your keyboard and mouse.

Exit device manager and restart your windows.

After windows have completely reloaded start to plug in your USB
devices one by one. As you would have cleared the windows database of
devices there is a chance that any problems will now disappear as
windows re-constructs it USB device database.

If this does not work and your hardware is not faulty then I am afraid
a system restore or windows re-install is indicated.

Hi,
This means the Windows Installer, Nulsoft etc. or some uninstaller package
has been removed in part, or is missing files or has been corrupted.
There is no way at this point to uninstall the program correctly.
If you're brave, it's on to deleting folders, shortcut and Registry
entries

dealing with the program.
A system restore and a registry export first are advisable.
