Hey, Darrne.

I didn't realize that it was random.
However I spent a good while trying to figure it out before I ask.

Re: [blind-gamers] Coming up with ideas for a new game project.

2018-02-12 Thread Justin Jones
A few possibile scenarios that the player could explore:

1. Exploration
2. Military conquest
3. Economic superiority
4. Diplomatic mastery, e.g. the United Federation of Planets from Star Trek

Or, the player could play around with all of these ideas, doing a
little of each.

Hi,

I have to say I really like Dark's suggestion too. I think the idea has
lots of potential and could have loads of replay value, due to the different

Hi Knick.

Hope I'm not too late to this discussion being as I've been on a vocal
studdies course all weekend :D.

One game I'd love to see which I think you'd be in an ideal position to make
is an sf themed single player space colonization game.

There are hundreds of games online where you can minimax your space colony
or space empire to battle other players, but very littel that actualy give
you the idea of going out into an alien environment.

I'd love to see a game where you had to build up a colony from scratch, grow
and manage your population, look at the resources of your planet or star
system and see what you can make, try to relate to nearby aliens by war or
peaceful means, and generally attempt to survive.

The sort of game I'm thinking would be a little like castaways in that
you'd be building buildings, producing resources and other pieces of
technology, but you'd also be researching, exploring your planet as well as
(when you have the vehicles and resources), it's moons and near by space,
to gather more resources and increase your colony even further.

It'd be particularly awesome if the game could be a little random so you
had to adapt to things, both small scale disasters, like maybe your planet
has some rainy weather that rusts some of your materials, to major problems,
like maybe your planet is low in metals and so you need to take more time
working on genetics and organic research instead.

What I've always found irritating about so many click happy online space
games (apart from the endless minimax pvp elements), is they miss the
random, haphazard nature of really being in an alien place. You click "build
ship hanger" and ping! there it is.

In reality, maybe the ground would be too soft, or maybe you have a sudden
attack of alien giant flying jelly fish you need to beat back.

I'd love to see a game that had you look after human colonies, had you
struggle against the environment, and come up in the end.

With your focus on games related to time, as well as the great job you did
Park boss, I definitely think this could be a good project, and one which
would give a very unique experience in audio gaming.

Hth.

All the best,

Dark.

Love using the mouse for certain games like swamp. I wish more audio
games had mouse support. Also gaming on the mac is not so good, unless
you have a vm or duel boot. I don't use my mac for gaming because I
have a lame 128 ssd. A nice computer but still prefer windows for most
things.

Re: [blind-gamers] audio game walkthroughs

2018-02-12 Thread Shaun Everiss

I have an old gaming mouse which works.

As for having moter issues I feel your pain.

My brother completely due to his teen aged gaming addiction now has rsi
badly and has to take medication that well has issues with it.

Anyway he really can't type or mouse round much well he can but its
really not a good time for him to do that constantly.

He has voice recognition software but loads of different mice.

So your standard mouse is 1 type or ergonomic mice.

You can have a mouse which is a series of bars, foot pedals, which just
click, track balls, and a mouse that looks like a joystick which he uses
a lot.

A touchscreen he uses a lot to.

Compaired to the expense of all his mice, a logitech touchpad only costs
20 dollars including shipping.

On 13/02/2018 1:07 a.m., Jude DaShiell wrote:
Actually that's incorrect for one reason.  The mouse moves easily.
Unless you have parkinsons disease you can probably use a touch screen
since you'll be able to keep a finger still long enough to do a gesture.
I can't use mice either and have a major fine motor deficit yet I can
and do use a touch screen every day.  I think what you could have used
to play those games with is a track ball.  That has a ball in a case
you turn to move the cursor and then there are two separate buttons on
the case you press to click.  You also keep your hand in the same
position to use a track ball since only the ball in the track ball
turns and the buttons are its only moving parts.  If you try any of
this stuff, I'll be interested to know what results you have.  There's
also a rat.  A rat is on the floor and attached to the computer and
you operate a rat with your feet.  Never having used one of those, I
can't go into specifics on that device though.  I have two problems
with mice.  First those move way too fast and second the targets for
them (controls) are too small. If a screen could have no more than 9
controls in three columns of three rows I expect then I could have
used a mouse effectively.

Hi,
Being totally blind from birth, I've never touched a mouse, and I
hope I would never need to. Mice (mouses? mice? that just sounds
weird!) were unusable by the blind at the time when I was taught
computers, hence the reason I could never really play Swamp or
RailRacer, let alone think about complete system navigation with it.
Not only that but my coordination and spatial awareness isn't all
that great. If I can't use a touchscreen then I've no chance of using
a mouse.

Cheers.
Damien.

Windows users just think mac operating system is hard until they start
playing with the mouse then they learn different quickly.  Now, mac on
the command line interface, that's a different operating system and

Re: [blind-gamers] Coming up with ideas for a new game project.

2018-02-12 Thread Stan Bobbitt
Hi,
I would be very much interested in an audio Civilization like game. I have
longed for something like that. Years ago I used to play Utopia. It was a turn
based, online, text only game.

There was a computerized version of Axis and Allies and it was to that version
that I was referring. Still, I agree, Civilization is a better fit for what I
am talking about.

Other ideas:

1. A Dwarf Fortress-esque game
2. A good 2D action-platformer (that supports game controllers), The Gate was a
step in the right direction, but there were way too many flaws to make it
playable 3. Something similar to the above, only with an emphasis on
exploration, e.g. something like Metroid

No, the buttons are clicking buttons not equivalent to arrow keys. With
jaws you can't even do this since jaws doesn't support mice. With other
screen readers the screen reader will announce what you are
highlighting. Understand, until you use one of those buttons you
haven't activated what you've highlighted.

Hi,
No. Thankfully I don't have Parkinsons. But my motor skills aren't all that
great. Neither is my spatial awareness and coordination. I battled with
iPhones and iPads for the better part of 5 years and had to give up in the
end. Typing at averages of 60 WPM on a desktop keyboard, 40 WPM on laptops,
10 WPM on the old Nokia phones with qwerty keyboards (at least they had
standard buttons), 5 WPM with standard number-based texting on the really old
phones, I'm lucky if I can do a single word in five minutes with an iDevice.
The touchscreen is just too sensitive, my other fingers get in the way far
too easily. You have to be really careful about how many fingers you have on
the screen, how they're positioned...Ugh. Even my grandma can use it better
than me, and that's saying something.
As for a mouse. I'm guessing I'll have similar problems with that. Not to
mention I'm not sure how it's supposed to move with two buttons, unless those
are like arrow keys? I guess at least if you have a proper mouse they are
actually buttons and not just some stupid touch based area. And how do you
know how far it's moving? How do you know you're not activating the wrong
thing? This is all, totally brand spanking new to me. To think I can install
hard drives in laptops and yet as far as mouse operation is concerned you may
as well be speaking to an alien. Lol.

Cheers.

That has a ball in a case you
turn to move the cursor and then there are two separate buttons on the
case you press to click. You also keep your hand in the same position
to use a track ball since only the ball in the track ball turns and the
buttons are its only moving parts. If you try any of this stuff, I'll
be interested to know what results you have. There's also a rat. A rat
is on the floor and attached to the computer and you operate a rat with
your feet. Never having used one of those, I can't go into specifics on
that device though. I have two problems with mice. First those move
way too fast and second the targets for them (controls) are too small.
If a screen could have no more than 9 controls in three columns of three
rows I expect then I could have used a mouse effectively.

Being totally blind from birth, I've never touched a mouse, and I hope I
would never need to. Mice (mouses? mice? that just sounds weird!) were
unusable by the blind at the time when I was taught computers, hence the
reason I could never really play Swamp or RailRacer, let alone think about
complete system navigation with it. Not only that but my coordination and

I've no chance of using a mouse.

Hi Damien,
At least with swamp, you don't need to be precise. Moving the mouse left or
right turns your character, and pressing a button fires or walks. There's no
impact if you move the mouse up or down.
I will note though that this is coming from a trackpad user. Everyone else
seems to hate trackpads. I never got the hang of a mouse, and just go back
to playing on my laptop.

I also love my Mac and still use it for some things, but one of the reasons why
I came back to Windows was because of the lack of games available for the Mac.
While it is true I could have used Bootcamp on my Mac, I personally didn’t feel

audio games and a lot of the time I was bitterly disappointed because they
