I'll second the call for "the Riftwar Saga" ("Magician: Apprentice",
"Magician: Adept", etc, etc.) by Raymond Feist, the Belgariad
(Eddings) and, of course, Tolkien. I picke

David Eddings might appeal at that age, especially _Belgariad_ as Garion
and Ce'Nedra are about that age in the series. Then there is _The
Elvenbane_ by Andre Norton and Merc

Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy are excellent fantasy books
ostensibly aimed at children. The volumes are _The Golden Compass_ (or
_Northern Lights_ in some countries), _The Subtle
