[BVARC] MSWE - how did you do?
Hello all, This was my second year for MSWE and it seemed like conditions were worse than last year, but my persistence was up. I got started at my Woodville QTH about 3 hours after the event started and logged 17 ships by 2300 UTC on Sunday. The majority of those were on my Maxcon 80-6 OCF dipole at 35'. However, i did get 5 total contacts on my PAR Electronics 20m Omni. at 25'. Nice when I can use that antenna as it drops the noise about 5 S units. All but one of my contacts were at 100w. One of them I got at 20w as I forgot to switch the power back to 100w after finding out PSK31 still isn't working on my Kenwood. I know what I need to do better next year are antennas with GAIN. Thanks to Rick, the op on the Elissa, I think that was my 15th ship. I know getting to Galveston was a bit dangerous due to the high water. Next year I'd like to do more digital on MSWE, like RTTY and PSK31, if I can ever get the bugs out of my HRD + Kenwood setup. And i'd like to try a magnetic loop antenna when using those modes. I am curious, did anyone else in the club participate and if you did, what was your setup and how did you do? 73, Rob, KC5RET ___ BVARC mailing list BVARC@bvarc.org http://mail.bvarc.org/mailman/listinfo/bvarc_bvarc.org

Here's the, almost, last call for members wishing to attend the Museum Ships Weekend at Seawolf Park this Saturday and Sunday. I'm turning in the list of those members that have expressed interest in attending, to the park, for passage at the gate. A separate email is being sent to those members who are on the list. 73MarkK5MGJ ___ BVARC mailing list BVARC@bvarc.org http://mail.bvarc.org/mailman/listinfo/bvarc_bvarc.org

Think I will call it a wrap with 18 ships. Only need 15 ships for the NJ2BB cert. Thank You Sparks AF5T for the visit yesterday and putting back up my carolina windom that went down to the ground in a storm 1 week prior to the flood. Was able to make contacts now on warc bands with tuner. Not a bad job putting up the antenna for an 85 year old. I think by now our KK5W crew are breaking down the stations at Ft Travis. I wish to say THANK YOU to the very few that made our KK5W club representation of the USS Cavalla and USS Stewart happen. It for a moment brought me to tears that my illness prevented me from my participation on site at the MSWE event. I have always loved this event and still remember 8 years ago when old Sparks and I started this aboard ships. I will always miss the old ship curator Chief of Boat John McMichael for allowing us way back before this new Ship board to restore ship antennas, radios, tour gide and operate in the radio rooms. In our hay day I presided the Cavalla Historical Amateur Radio Society that spawned from BVARC member participation. 73 Bill WS5H___ BVARC mailing list BVARC@bvarc.org http://mail.bvarc.org/mailman/listinfo/bvarc_bvarc.org

Re: [BVARC] MSWE Calling Frequencies
These frequencies are for calling the ship stations as published by N2BB, not for calling the site for directions of information. We will try to monitor 146.53 for talk in, 832-630-1799 and possibly other cell numbers. Also, at times 146.23/94 repeater, but you will only be able to hear it well in Galveston is you have a very good mobile setup. (good 5/8 external antenna and 50 watts or more). The Texas City Repeater will have a better signal than 34/94 on the Island and Peninsula. It is on 147.74/14 and is an open repeater which can be used with the normal courtesy for open repeaters used without prior coordination. If you take the ferry and wait until you are on the Peninsula you should be able to contact us directly. Otherwise, travel past the first gas station/convenience store (where you can buy ice and other supplies) and take the next paved road to the south which will bring you to the park entrance. You will be allowed in during the daylight hours. We do not have instructions at this time for entrance during the evening before 0700 AM. Try to contact us on 146.53 FM or by Cell during the dark hours. I have a mistake in that 146.53 came from my memory banks rather than the Simplex recommended frequency list. A better frequency is 146.55. [BVARC] MSWE 2015
Bill Stone and I spent a Sunday last year checking out all the alternatives. I did not document it well because I did not intend to be involved this year, but the messages this year remind me of what I did not remember. I have also contacted the American Undersea Warfare Board of Directors and asked if they would allow us in the compound for the event. They considered it in a board meeting and decided that they would not support the Amateur Radio Community in any way for MSWE. The Coast Guard will not support us using their turf because of restrictions from Homeland Security after 9-11-2001. The Yacht Basin will not support us because they do not have facilities that allow this to be a proper place for the event. Last year we were welcomed by the Galveston County Park Board and their employees and everyone except the Ft. Travis wildlife cooperated fully after we determined that they were worried mostly about the Paranormal Club that was sharing the park. We had no trouble with the paranormal club but the mosquitos were fierce. We left the skunk alone and she did not bother us other than a bit of a scare. The birds were a bit of a poop, but we dodged that. The showers were nice, even without hot water and the facilities were welcome. I don't know the status of the Cabanas this year, but I plan a trip this week end to check them out. Last year we did not have electricity, but we made do. The building was being renovated last year, so may be better this year. I think the mosquitos can be kept at bay with a bit of screening, some tents and Yard Foggers with better planning. The more help that I can find, the better it will be. So, get your suggestions in quickly so that I can act on them. Volunteer for what you are willing to help with. If you are involved with the hamfest, let it be known and we will wait for your availability. If you want to do dual duty with Field Day, great. Let me know your plan and I will try to work with it. I am starting early enough to have flexibility. I still need a co-chairman, but demands on your time will be minimal for a while, so do not worry about interference from the ham-fest if you are involved there. Let me know what you would like to see. Last year was a bit rushed, so there are some things that could go better and we will try to do better this year. [BVARC] MSWE 2015
I have received a reply from the BOD of American Undersea Warfare and they do not want participation from BVARC or any Amateur Radio Operators in the Museum Ship Weekend on their property this year. That leaves us with finding another site. Last year we were denied permission to operate from the Park Area and though I have not asked this year I would not expect to be welcomed in Seawolf Park either. Last year we operated from Ft. Travis on Bolivar Penesula and were welcomed by Galveston County to their Park. We all had a good time except that the mosquitos were bad after dark when the sea breeze brought the critters in from the grassy area. We were able to use the shelters last year, but we have not asked if they are available this year, waiting for an answer from AUW. I have been planning for Jerry Muller to assist me this year as Co-Chairman, but Jerry has withdrawn as of this week end. So, I am soliciting comments from the membership. What do we do? Do we go to Ft. Travis where we can stay at night or call it off. Who will commit to attending and helping. Do I have another candidate for Co-Chairman who will commit? Now is the time for us to make plans for the first weekend in June.
