Regarding the fish-eating mammal observations, I asked my friend who studied
mink in grad school (now he works for USFWS), and he says it's most likely a
mink. He says mink will often start at the tail end.

I stopped by the Portland Point Osprey nest about 6:00 today. To my surprise,
there were 3 adult ospreys at the nest; one was in the nest cup, one was
perched on the nest rim, and the third was hovering over the two. I couldn't
judge its intent but it left after a few minutes.

cavity not far from the house. It had some peace for an hour or so, but the
chickadees have found it out now.

Speaking of Kingfisher nest sites, I think I found one, too. Yesterday around
8pm I was pulling up to the stop sign at the intersection of Myers Rd. and
Lakeshore Rd. (near the entrance to Myers Park). A Kingfisher flew overhead
with a fish in its bill. Looking in my rearview mirror, I could

A few months ago, we were startled by a banging sound on our back door at
night. When I went to look, I found a flicker appearing to fly into the door
repeatedly, but which might have just been it trying to perch on the wooden

At 9:30am this morning my neighbor Janice Levy reported an Osprey perched atop
the platform on Myers Road (Lansing). I didn't see it, but we both live near
this platform and drive by it every day, so I'm trusting her id.

I just had the "spring feeder bird trifecta" here in Lansing:
A male Indigo Bunting, Baltimore Oriole, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak all on the
feeders at one time.

There was a single Osprey on the Myer’s Hill nest in Lansing this morning when
I drove by. It wasn’t there yesterday for my commute, but it could have arrived
later in the day and I would have missed it. But it’s there now, and I was glad
to see it.
