“My” six-mile-creek Louisiana Waterthrush is also back this afternoon, not
singing like I was listening for, but calling its sharp chip calls as it
surveyed its turf up back and forth along the creek before landing fairly close
on a tree for good ID-confirming views of its tail-pumping gray-and-

When I arrived at Shindagin Hollow's little wetland area, a largish brown heron

While cross-country skiing through Hammond Hill, I saw a flock of about 50

Stopped by Goetchius wetland preserve this morning and was treated to a
wonderful air show by a winnowing Wilson's Snipe. The unmistakable winnowing
sound could be easily heard coming in waves one after the next, but spotting
the bird in the sky was trickier until I figured out how high to look,
Hawthorn orchards was quiet this morning, no big arrival due to overnight storm
I guess. Only warblers were one yellow warbler and two common yellowthroats.
Blue-headed vireo, eastern towhee, and wood thrush were the only other

On my bike ride home, heard Blackpoll Warbler near the wood chip piles opposite
the Newman golf course, and also along the east hill recway at the NW corner of

Sunday morning was again good at the Freese Road gardens, attracting a good
assortment of both birds and birders. Besides the sparrows, among which Mr.
Lincoln was again a star attraction, there was a passing Northern Harrier, a
House Wren, and at one point a largish bird looked to me like a f-t
I didn't post my dickcissel photos from yesterday because they were unfocused
and overexposed, but I got some better ones today late in the morning, perched
nicely under a coneflower stalk, then flying out into the sun briefly before
dipping into the northeast-most corner plot. Those photos, alo
14 turkey vultures are roosting on trees between Penny Lane and the Second Dam
of Six-Mile Creek. Haven't seen that here before. The surrounding passerines
seem a little unsure about what to make of these big and somewhat-but-not-quite
raptor-scarry-looking visitors.

killdeer in the gravel island of salmon creek by Myers - or there was until the
hunters started firing nearby. I don't see it anymore, but can hear it calling
from nearby somewhere.

Tomorrow morning I'll be leading a Cayuga Bird Club field trip to Connecticut
Hill. Meet at 7:30 am at the Wegmans parking lot (away from the store, by the
inlet) or around 7:50 am at the intersection of Connecticut Hill Rd., Boylan
Rd., and Lloyd Starks Rd. We'll plan to finish around
Had a nice CBC field trip this morning, starting with a willow flycatcher at
the Wegmans parking lot. With Dave Gislason leading us through a variety of
interesting trails at Connecticut Hill, the seven of us ended up with a good
variety of species, though most were visually rather uncooperative

on Highland Avenue in Cayuga Heights, we heard a Merlin calling from a pine
tree up the hill SE of the church. Soon we saw a Merlin circle around in a
