[CGUYS] Ethernet Controller Problem
All, I need some assistance with a problem. I started my PC one morning and had no local area network or internet connectivity. Check of device manager showed that Ethernet Controller has a yellow question mark and the network adapter is completely missing. Network adapter is integral to the motherboard. It's LEDs are lighted. Device manger advises that the ethernet controller is not working as it has a problem. Google search pointed to corrupt or missing driver for ethernet controller. Re-installed drivers from original CD, no solution. Downloaded updated drives and utility from Intel website and installed. Did not fix problem Attempts to update or roll back drivers fail with message that they could not be installed as the necessary software could not be found. I installed older wireless USB network adapter and have internet and LAN connectivity through that. Windows did warn that the fixed IP address I entered for the wireless adapter was already assigned to the missing wired network adapter but that that one was not currently attached to the computer. I would like to repair the onboard ethernet controller / network adapter if possible. Can anyone offer any advice or should I just buy a new network card.System info below. Thank you in advance. My burner is laCie, although I believe it actually is a Panasonic. I guess the bottom line is that I like a nice, dark and crisp image; it's a matter of what is acceptable to each of us. Perhaps I should try another brand of disc. Verbatim works very well for me. I have noticed that I do get darker labels on my Samsung lightscribe than I do on my HP, single burn cycle. Does installation of Open Office mess with the desktop? (like an installation of Star Office did when I installed it many years ago. After I installed Star Office, I couldn't find anything.) Re: [CGUYS] Comcast bundle feedback
Bill, I have been a long standing customer with Comcast for Digital TV and High Speed Internet. Until recently, I had the TV and Internet ala cart. That is separate. I bundled the two together back in Jan. to get more premium TV channels for only a slight increase in monthly payment. It was a poor choice. The separate businesses of the company do not talk to each other. I was triple billed for two months running for the TV service. The drawback to the bundle became apparent when every time I called to straighten out the TV billing (and I had to call many, many times!) my high speed internet service would be disconnected. I then would have to make many more phone calls to get that restored. Seems that with the bundle, if there is the least little discrepancy or change in one of the bundled services, Comcast requires that ALL the services in the bundle be disconnected and then the customer has to contact the business office of each services (in your case three!) and navigate through their bureaucracy to get the service restored. By the way, they continue to charge you for the disconnected service. This takes a lot of patience as often multiple calls to each business office is required. So you will never have a single problem, true, you will have them in threes! This is a good reason to avoid bundling. For more detail, especially why you might not wishto bundle phone services with Comcast. visit this page: http://www.comcastmustdie.com/ I can not recommend Comcast to anyone with a clear conscience. Regards, John Settle Quoting Bill L'Hommedieu [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I'll be moving into an apartment (don't know which yet) in Arlington from a single family home and wonder what options for cable/satellite exist. I suspect the Comcast is the only choice. If that's true, what's the service like on the bundle of TV, phone and internet. Is FiOS available in multi-unit rentals/condos? FiOS *is* available to multi-unit buildings. Some friends of mine have it (in Annapolis). I don't know if they have to build it in with the building (their's is a fairly new building), or if they can retrofit. It seems like apartments/condos would be fairly profitable pickin's for Verizon since the potential customers are--literally--right on top of each other. As for Comcast's bundle, I don't know, but you can tell them that you can get Verizon's Triple Play for $99 and see if they'll match it. Re: [CGUYS] UDPATE: Running a portable hard drive
Yes other companies have different names for it and even different capabilities. To quote the Wikipedia entry for example: Sony's implementation of the system is known as i.LINK (fully incorporated in 1394a-2000), and uses only the four signal pins, omitting the two pins which provide power to the device in favor of a separate power connector on Sony's i.LINK products. The ports are sometimes labeled S100 or S400 to indicated speed in Mbit/s. When I got my 3G iPod back in 2003, it canme with a 4 wire adapter for the firewire plug. I always thought that was because the early Apple implementation of 1394 didn't have the two power lines just the four data lines. I think this is wrong. [CGUYS] Disc or Disk? Pardon me, my I use your Ameche?

She convinces them to try to include current slang. One of the mobster characters states he has to make a telephone call by saying Gotta use the Ameche referring to Don Ameche's 1939 role in The Life of Alexander Graham Bell. (Same Studio.) Cue central casting stuffy professor types falling all over themselves to document the usage. (in this case Cue the central casting IT types...) I've never been able to document that usage in the wild. If it was in the vernacular, it life must have been ephemeral in the extreme. I'll agree if that was intended to say: The Oxford Dictionary of the English Language is not the authority on our (fill in the blank for your highly specialized field of interest) technical terminology. It is the wrong standard to apply. For usage in the general population of English speaking peoples, consistent, widespread usage over time would need to be documented and proven by we or what ever pronoun puts itself forward as an authority for inclusion to be considered. I believe 10 years is a generally accepted rule of thumb although those egghead English majors like Dr. Johnson have been known to show a remarkable degree of flexibility when presented with documentation included in a reasoned, intelligent argument. Somehow, the fiat of because we said it means that appears to come up a little short on intelligence and reason, IMHO. Seems, like the English language, technical jargon is in a constant state of revision and expansion. I humbly submit this thread as proof thereof. Jargon provides a wonderful and quick way of communicating among like minded people; use it frequently myself. The con is that it excludes those outside the cult. The key is knowing when it gets in the way and when it does not. She convinces them to try to include current slang. One of the mobster characters states he has to make a telephone call by saying Gotta use the Ameche referring to Don Ameche's 1939 role in The Life of Alexander Graham Bell. (Same Studio.) Re: [CGUYS] Disc vs. Disk
Sir, I believe the authoritative text on the English language is still the O.E.D.(The Oxford English Dictionary.) Have you queried the unabridged version of that source? Regrettably, I have no access. Re: [CGUYS] solar battery chargers
Betty, Do you by chance live in Maryland? My wife and I have been discussing going solar with our circa 1905 house and an looking for a reliable solar contractor. betty wrote: And what about Windows users who are perpetually in the dark? The price for those panels is lower than some of the new cable/DSL/ADSL modems. Searched online and found one that retails at $44.99, and another for $37.95; will be much less if bundled with FIOS service boxes. Betty: Is this packaged in a way that will allow a DIY installation? First time I saw photovoltaic trickle chargers for 12V batteries was at a Volkswagen dealer. They had the chargers plugged into many of the cars on their lot, with the PV panel on the dashboard. I'd guess they might have some kind of deal from the German government where homeowners and businesses are given incentives to install PV panels on their buildings to generate electricity. These panels are integrated roofing, like tiles [search SunSlate], not big panels bolted to the roof, as were used 20 years ago. Initially the equivalent cost of energy from PV was around 40 cents per kw hour while power companies charged 10 cents/kwh. Government paid the difference to the customers. Cost has gone down to 30 cents, 20 cents, and is expected to reach parity within 5 years. After that the electricity from PV panels will be free. I didn't look at the brand that they were using, but I could ask the VW dealer, or you could ask a dealer that uses them. I got the prices by using a search engine. These chargers plug into the cigarette lighter in a car. The laptop chargers were well over $200 when I looked for one several years ago and are still expensive, but chargers for cell phones and iPods can be found for under $40. And, yes, the battery chargers are easy to set up. Some models are even sold in the online NPR shop and many other places on the Internets. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

[CGUYS] I Made a Green-Horn Error in Windows Install
Greeting! I recently built my own PC for the first time. When I installed the operating system (Windows XP SP2 Home Edition) I made the green-horn error of having a combo floppy drive and 7-in-1 card reader install. Windows wound up lettering the floppy and all the 7-in-1 drives before it lettered my hard drive, hence the operating system is installed on Drive H. I've install the Microsoft Office Suite and a few other pieces of software and non-standard drive lettering does cause some problems. I'd like to correct the drive lettering and was curious to see if there was an alternative to uninstalling, formatting and re-installing the operating system and the other software. After I disconnect the problematic software. Any advice anyone? I suppose if I have to do that, now would be the best time! Thank you in advance. [CGUYS] Comcast new Legal Policy / Co-incidental Loss of service?
The link below is to an article in the W.P. on how local governments are upset over Comcast's new legal policy. The interesting co-incidence is that I live in Prince George's Co., got my cable bill, read the document and promptly opted out protecting my right to sue and be part of class action lawsuits against Comcast. Did that Friday. Monday I lost service from Comcast for both TV and high speed internet. Still out and no tech available until Thursday. Tried to check my Comcast email from work over the internet which I have done many times before and can't login. Bad password error message. Glad I don't have the triple play package or I probably wouldn't have a phone either! I am sure this is all just a co-incidence, yeah right. http://www.tiny.cc/WPComcast Clear skies, John J Settle (longitude 76W 56' 30.34, latitude 38N 57' 22.06) * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail?
