Actually, you don't _need_ to edit the system fonts.conf file. Just copying /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/6x13-ISO8859-1.pcf.gz (or whatever) to ~/.fonts/ worked for me. Copying that font made Fixed 10 (Pango description) show up as
