Flipping the order of the items and adjusting their names matches the behavior in GNOME Shell GNOME Classic's default notification area. (In fact I fixed that for GNOME Classic for Oneiric but realized too late that the indicator wouldn't automatically get the improved text.) GNOME actually uses ellipsis for the first item, but not the second one which I believe is the opposite of what we want in Ubuntu. Before: Keyboard Preferences Show Current Layout After: Show Keyboard Layout Keyboard Layout Settings… The keyboard layout indicator is hidden by default. But when you double click on the title bar, it (un-)maximizes it. If you double click on the menu bar... Nothing happen! It is very confusing for users who now expect both thoses bars to behave as one. In fact, many users will not see the difference between the 2 bars, and will not understand why sometimes it doesn't work! It is not consistent at all. I understand why the global menu was used for the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by many desktop users. A commonly suggested solution is: [ ] Global Menu on [ ] Global Menu off [ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only for maximized windows). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 928762] Re: Theme and Launcher labels are hundreds of pixels away from their controls
Right-aligned labels would solve this specific problem by setting them nearer to its controls, as seen in the wireframe I'm attaching. But the solution arises other problems: the 'Background' label seems out of place, and the 'Launcher icon size' option seems to belong more in the 'Launcher' tab[1] (in the current implementation it's named 'Behavior'). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 928764] Re: Look is a synonym of Appearance but used as a subset
We translated look as «aspecto» (lit. 'aspect') in Spanish. It is, indeed, synonym of appearance. Open the Appearance panel of System Settings. What you see: Look and Behavior tabs. This does not make sense in two ways: (1) Look is a synonym of appearance (see http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/look definition 19), but is presented as if it is a subset of appearance. (This may also cause localization problems, if the two labels are translated using the same word, or when a language does not have two different words for this meaning.) (2) Behavior is, at first thought, not appearance. The obvious way to fix this is to move the launcher size control to the second tab, rename the first tab General, and the second Launcher'. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 844081] Re: Unity Greeter - Background of the Unity Greeter should reflect the background chosen by the user that is currently selected
@Afzal, comment #36: Mark Shuttleworth is not the CEO of Canonical ;-) And why whould we complicate our life? Simply don't pick an innapropiate wallpaper, go back to the roots, no need to add more settings... I don't quite understand why some users are always complaining about features added or removed, because they can always change the defaults and, for example, install another greeter or display manager. Sorry, but commenting in a closed bug report is not that helpful. Discuss this in Ayatana mailing list and don't spam bug subscribers.
