I'll be at SxSW. If somebody wants to arrange a meetup, I'd definitely
put it on my calendar.

After recently talking with my wife about making a donation to the Red Cross
(to support the Haiti recovery effort), I went and had a look at their
donation form. All in all it's pretty weak. Which is unfortunate given how
important their organization is. I don't think it's so bad that people

Which particular form are you referring to? They seem to have several
online forms at different countries. Is it one of these?

I think it's a great idea. However, aren't they moving away from
forms to make donations? I just read an article that said people
could send a text message to a specific number and automagically
donate 10 bucks to them.
To me, no interface is better than a form just my 2 cents...

Great idea, but I guess I would have to ask if anyone at these
organizations even has time to manage and implement a new form on
their sites at a time like this. I imagine that they're completely
overwhelmed by this crisis.

I agree they're likely overwhelmed, Anne.
I've also spoken to some developer friends who can help out with the back
end. I'd like to take as much of the burden off of their shoulders as
possible.

Do we have a PR person in the org.? Perhaps they'd be more likely to take us
seriously if they were doing the talking (rather than some schlub like me!)?
Just a thought.

It's a good thought - many charity sites need help in this regard.
Last Christmas, the various branches of my family all suggested
favorite charities to donate to, and I had the opportunity to make
use of three different ones - all were clunky, awkward, and

Hi Hugh, et al., I'm the IxDA Vice President and I'd be glad to help
with any Red Cross communications if an official voice is
considered important for this urgent initiative. You can reach me via
email most easily at ixd(at)elizabethbacon.com and I'll do what I

You people do know that the IxD's at the Red Cross (who are on this
list mind you) might not take kindly to be told what to do.
Just saying.

Of course. They could very well tell us to take a long walk off a short
pier. Never hurts to offer though.

At least 4 people on my team (in addition to myself) will be there. We

Hi All,
I'm Austin's local IxD leader. I hadn't posted yet, as we're still trying to
work out the details, but the Austin IxDA team is working on a UX breakfast.
Not that we're opposed to drinking, too, but Tex-Mex breakfasts ROCK and we

David Meltzer is the

If you decide to offer them your services, perhaps he

It certainly doesn't hurt to offer. And it doesn't hurt to consider
where they're at or where they're coming from either.
Many times a kludgy interface is due to it being dictated by the
back end where an apparently easy tweak can wreak havoc on other
layers (talking to the DB, e-commerce, etc.)
Are there any standard to have labels about the input necessarily. Shouldn't
placement of labels and input fields depend on length, type and other
parameters of a form?
If you are talking of Haiti...
Great idea! I'll be there, so count me in!

initiative, I'd be happy to help out in that capacity as well :^).

I'm trying to figure out a methodology that I can use to gain a

The user group is essentially a business person that is on the go,
often working remotely in different locations. In
