This workaround works well on real Squeezeboxes (Boom, SB2, etc).
However, it does not work when using the iPad / SqueezePad itself as
the playback device. The file handle remains open in this case, even
after powering off the iPad completely.

When I'm listening on the iPad I often use Splashtop Remote Desktop to
connect to my PC. Once connected, the playback quietens then

I wouldn't say that Squeezey and SqueezePad work the same.
Squeezey only supports mp3, so the LAME codec needs to be installed on
the server - and anything must go through the CPU intensive mp3
encoding.
SqueezePad support a lot more formats natively (and I'll implement
native FLAC in some later
