All I can say is I have enough Squeezeboxen and a Transporter to keep me
going. I'll archive the official SC7 release and code and that'll be
the end of the road for me if the deal goes ahead. Hopefully they're
built to last and Sean's non-compete doesn't forever prevent the

Having had all sort of problems getting my SB3 to talk to the slimserver

It was working perfectly and then suddenly only white noise!

First off all I would like to thank you for your active involvement in
this thread and ACC. I think you have done a lot of good work for users
with remote DBs.

I have thought about how this could be implemented but I need some
additional scenario and technical info to see if the process can be
automated or that, because of the broad range of scenario's possible,
some things can't be automated and have to be adapted manually to the
users situation. If its implemented it ofcourse has to be a reliable
solution. But, its on my todo list.
I actually really look forward to creating all the new options but
there are still some issues to resolve with this one I think.

Do you think the ACC user base is already large enough to take it more
serious and do it the sourceforge way? I have no overview of users
really using the tool already because I have no download stats so
judging from the forum thread there are not really that many active
(involved) users. That can ofcourse also mean that the script works as
it should for them.

Do you think there is potential and an oppertunity for ACC to grow
bigger? (other users are welcome to react)

BTW. I have made an RC2 version which should address the 'script is
running slow issue' and perform better but that is currently being
tested by Schatzy and it may still have a problem with it so I hope to
be able to post this soon.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox options to stream

2008-01-11 Thread bpa

Minimal s/w development approach - you could consider the following:

1. Take the current SqueezeCenter sourceand disable all user menu
options you don't want to provide to your users. I'm sure some advice
will be given how to scale to 500 users.

2. If MP3 files are on the same server as SqueezeCenter there is no
need for any more server s/w.

3. If MP3 files are on remote servers then you just use standard
network file shares or could try UPNP server which comes bundled with
many NAS or Windows. I haven't tested UPNP server with Suqeezecenter
but I believe it works.

4. Broadcast type servers - try something like icecast.

Re: [slim] External CUE sheet parsing problem

2008-01-11 Thread ermine

I've also seen this behavior on some FLAC + external CUE sheets (also
made with EAC). I haven't tracked it down to a specific cause. But
basically it is a right PITA with my transporter and 6.5.4 running on
XP pro - often selecting an album the first track is slow to start (
10s) and I get the same issue with the second track title allocated to
every following track. I found getting rid of some of the REM
statements EAC adds as to date and Genre helps with that, and getting
rid of apostrophes in track names also helps that. I will see if the
pregap stuff is the fix. I was going to change the server o run on
linux and also with a second network card dedicated to the transporter.
When it works the transporter sounds lovely, but the software isn't
really reliable enough for everyday usage :(

It is always surprising to me that this facility was never part of the
core slimserver. Reading the forums there are so many threads providing
alternative approaches. I believe that there is a demand for such a
facility, either as a stand alone application, or embedded in
slimserver. I am sure the limiting factor to the development of ACC is
your own time, hence partly my suggestion to host on a development
site. I don't think number of users should put you off from this. I am
sure the more the code is developed the more users there will be. The
disadvantage of increased popularity will be an increase in feature
requests ! There are just so many different ways to sort and print the
data, everyone wants something slightly different !

It takes a long time to boot up each time it goes to sleep and the IR

Personally, I would be more likely to use the smaller Nokia even though

2008-01-11 Thread Sike

I agree with Mnyb:

I have gone through all the phases of SB's from the first batch to the
SB3's
we have today.

I always constantly replace all of my SB's to the latest generation (To
get rid of wireless-B products.. or for the nice
screen/design/form-factor) .. I have probably bought over 40 SB's over
the last (has it been 6 or 7) couple of years.

Over the years I bought 10 SB's at a time. Doing this gave me a
slightly better price from SlimDevices and paid for the swiss import
duties.. This also helped me get my friends exited about them...

I am a huge fan and will be buying the duet and maybe a couple of
controlers. The only slightly annoying/tedious is getting someone from
the states to bring them over. Getting someone in the states to order
and then they send them over...

The dollar is 1.10 to our Chuffs right now (CHF) and Logitech is
selling the set over here for 599 CHF.. against 439 CHF in the
states)..

It is only a matter of principle...

this could be the first reported case of an old-style diode break.

The appears to be a problem with Firefox. When I open the .MHT file in

 Peter,
I agree with Erland about the problems of cannabalizing sales of the
current device by releasing a new one and that SlimDevices has already
made a commitment to the current device. However, history and
companies such as Apple have shown that building the right device the
first time out obliterates the competition and wins a loyal customer
following. It is a dilemma for SlimDevices and the users that need a
 larger screen.

The form factor of Sonos and iPhone with their larger screen makes it
obvious that a little bigger is better. I actually like to look at the
album cover graphics because I tend to recall the albums more by there
artwork than their name. Also, anything that mimics flipping through a
CD collection, whether crystal cases or in a CD book, replicates a
familiar user experience. Again, the new iPods do this. To me this
 beats reading text anyday.

Peter, I'm showing my age (54) but do you need reading glasses? I hate
it but I do. I tend to pop my glasses up or look over the top of them
so I can see small text or detail clearly. This means holding the
object really close (~6) to my face and flipping them back on for
distance. My progressive lenses (distance on top, reading below) are
not real clear for close-up and tend to tire my eyes because of the
angle at which I have look through them for close-up vision. It is a
universal problem among people that need correction for distance and
 reading.

 Steve
Have you actually seen or used the SBC? If you haven't, then it seems
premature to be speaking authoritatively about its deficiencies. For
example, it does display album art, and if you browse by albums, that's
what it shows. Along with text, which is important for those who don't
have art for 100% of their collection -- think of that text as the
printing on the spines of physical CDs.

The SBC screen is small but very sharp. My 48 year-old eyes don't need
reading glasses yet, but I'm on the verge of needing them, and I've
been using the SBC beta for 3+ months without any problems of reading
the text.

Bigger-is-better isn't obvious to me. The Sonos remote and iPhone
require two hands, but you can easily operate the SBC with one hand.
And this demographic you're talking about (older, home owner, etc.) is
just as likely to want a glass of wine or beer or a book in the other
hand. Yes, some people prefer the two-hander remotes, but no way is it
obvious that a little bigger is better.

Trotting out Apple as an example of a company that nails it the first
time is actually pretty funny. I'm reminded of Steve Jobs' comment
after his NeXT project flopped commercially; it was something along the
lines of You never get it right the first time. Did you ever hear of
the Apple I? (If you're 54 you're old enough to remember the first
PC, which was the Apple IIe.)

Re: [slim] SB Controller vs. N800

2008-01-11 Thread Siduhe

I would second Heuer's comments. OS2008 is a big step forward in terms
of stablility and speed (and we have Diablo to look forward to in
2009!). Not so keen on the formatting (everything is now thumb/finger
access sized) but it's a lot more snappy.

Word of caution before upgrading to OS2008 though. Take out your
memory cards (a few reports of these being corrupted by the upgrade,
although this was with the beta release not the current (supported)
release) and check whether the applications you use most often on the
N800 have been ported over to OS2008 - a lot of popular apps are only
in the process of being made available on OS2008.

Use the 2nd (blank) drop-down box to choose another display option, and
then save/apply the changes. Then you'll see those 2 options, plus a
3rd drop-down box, which is blank. Repeat that process until you have
all the options you want. Then you should be able to cycle through them
via Now Playing on the remote.

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-01-11 Thread miw

The Duet is an interesting next step in the audio world. It brings
convenient user interface and allows the audio equipment to be hidden
from view (a big plus for me).
As a potential first time buyer, the SBR is spot on. The SBC or the
duet combo is less appealing, as i'm not yet convinced that the SBC is
the right user interface. The iTouch seems another promising way
forward, especially if that product opens up for 3rd party
applications. Hence, it was a bit of a disappointment to learn that the
set-up process of the SBR requires the SBC.
From the odd clues in this thread, it seems that at set-up, the SBR
sets up its own WiFi network to which the SBC connects to perform the
initialisation. One would thing that this process can be easily copied
to an application running on a WiFi enable PC.
So it seems that there is no need to wait for future revisions of the
SBR firmware to allow initial setup to be done from the wired ethernet
port.

I think it depends on what your previous settings were, and whether or
not you wiped out your previous settings when you updated to the
nightly. For example, I always preserve my preferences file when
updating, and haven't seen that problem.

My recollection is that the default is to have a more complete list at
the beginning, and if the user wants fewer options to cycle through,
he/she can remove them by setting some to blank.

Re: [slim] Rumor: Microsoft to buy Logitech?!

2008-01-11 Thread iwp

I don't think I've yet seen a hi-fi digital audio receiver that
integrates nicely with any of the online stores. I suppose Apple
Airport does, but IIRC you need to control that from a Mac rather than
with a remote, so it's rubbish for living room use. A SqueezuneBox
would actually be a fairly unique product.

My Magnatune plugin was partly an experiment in this idea, except it
doesn't do purchases via the remote, of course. Which brings us to the
obvious drawback from MS' viewpoint - the Squeezebox is a remarkably
open platform. They'd presumably want to restrict its use, so that we
couldn't add other music providers etc. All the relationships Slim
built up with mp3tunes, RadioIO, Pandora etc. would be suspect from MS'
viewpoint as these are the kind of services MS might want to offer as
part of Zunes.

All of which, of course, means that even if a SqueezuneBox is
interesting as a product, an iLastsqueezuneslackerBoxio is even better
- and that surely would never happen if a content provider such as MS
got control of the Squeezebox range.

[slim] broken remote

2008-01-11 Thread sjuttiosju

I own two Squeezebox2 since quite some time and I'm very happy with
them. But now one of the remotes seems to be broken. The power-button
still works (sometimes) but nothing else. I exchanged batteries and
tested both remotes with both boxes to exclude the box as an error
source - it's the one remote.

Now the questions:
* How do I open the remote without breaking it and is there a chance
for fixing it?
* Does the remote from SB v3 work with the SB2?
* If not, where do I get a replacement? Is there a simple/cheap third
party remote that works without hassle?

Thanks in advance for any help

[slim] SBR: button behavior not what users would prefer?

2008-01-11 Thread peterw

A quick glance at the SC7 source suggests the SBR button may not have
the flexibility I hoped for, largely because the canPowerOff() method
suggests the SBR cannot turn off. Dean has asked in the past what
off means, and I'll give you a new answer: it means the player will
go silent and not affect what's playing in any sync group the player
might be in. When synced, off is like one audience member leaving a
concert hall mid-performance, but pause and stop are like the
conductor silencing the whole orchestra.

If a Receiver is playing a playlist different from any other player,
then it would make sense to have the button act as Pause.

But if the Receiver is synced with one or more others and its button is
interpreted as Pause, doesn't that mean that pressing the Receiver
button would pause every player in the sync group? I think that's
probably not what most people would want. I think most folks would want
the button to control only that receiver -- more like the power_toggle
on any of the other players.

Best would be giving users options:
1) smart operation (pause if acting alone, power if synced with

2) always treat like pause
3) always treat like power_toggle

Option 1 would be great with SyncOptions and local MP3 or FLAC tracks,
as the effect of the On or Unpause press would be to start playing
music -- either what the Receiver last played (if acting alone) or what
the sync group is playing (if synced).

[slim] Soft Squeeze Won't Connect Remotely to SlimServer

2008-01-11 Thread Ed C

I'd like to thank everyone whose posted in the past regarding how to
set-up remote access to SlimServer. Thanks to that wealth of
information, I was able to successfully access SlimServer remotely and
listen to the stream through Windows Media Player with the URL
http://host address:9000/stream.mp3 (In fact, I'm listening to it as
I write.)

What I haven't been able to do is get SoftSqueeze to work. When I
launch SoftSqueeze from the SlimServer window, it does launch, but
never gets past the Please wait. Connecting to Slim Server. message.
I've spent a lot of effort scouring the forums, the FAQ, and the Wiki
looking for an answer, but so far, no luck. Any suggestions would be
appreciated. I think SoftSqueeze would be the better interface since it
could control the SlimServer directly instead of controlling the stream
with SlimServer in one window and listening to it through a separate
mp3 application.

T.I.A.,
Ed

[slim] How to add a playlist from the computer?

2008-01-11 Thread Fjatle

Maybye this should have been posted in the beginners catalog, but
anyhow:

In the server configuration, I set up a location to where my playlists
is stored. I have stored one playlist in there (made
from Rhythmbox, Linux media player). So from what I expect, the
slimserver should easily find my playlist, and play it like a charm.
But that don't happen.

The only way I get to create a playlist, is from the Slimserver or from
the squeezebox itself.
Since creating playlist from Rhythmbox is much faster, than from
slimserver, I would prefer to do it the way I am trying to do.

So, is there anything I have missed out on here or what?

Re: [slim] How to add a playlist from the computer?

2008-01-11 Thread aubuti

First, did you do a rescan in slimserver after copying the playlist
over? Slimserver won't know about it unless you at least rescan the
playlists.

Second, there is no one standard for playlist formats. It is possible
that Rhythmbox's playlists aren't the format that slimserver uses, so
slimserver doesn't know what to do with it. Use a text editor to
compare a Rhythmbox-generated playlist with one that you generated in
slimserver to see if the formats are the same. If not, you might need
to do some tweaking of the Rhythmbox playlist to convert it to
something that slimserver will read. Normally it's something you can do
quickly with some intelligent search-and-replace, or 'sed' commands, or
a script.

Re: [slim] Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2008-01-11 Thread jerimiah797

There a couple things I'd like to see slimserver7

-RhapsodyDirect support. Browse, search, and play from the Rhapsody
Music service natively. This will enable rhapsody streams to be pushed
to all squeezeboxes in the network. :-)

- NetRemote/mediaBridge support, so slimserver can display tracks,
album art, rhapsody search, etc on a NetRemote enable PocketPC.

These two things together make Slim the better option for whole house
rhapsody service than Sonos, since it would be automatable,
controllable, and customizable.

From my testing the Musical Fidelity X-DACV3 is an inferior DAC compared
to the Benchmark DAC1, so not a fair comparison drawn. That being said
I'm still considering buying a transporter to replace the SB3 for the
added functionallity and display. Considering the value of the
transporter, maybe Slim Devices could bundle the Duet remote with the
tranporter minimal price increase in anything, and make it a true
hi-end product in all respects.

[slim] Viewing text files from slimserver

Has there ever been discussion about the ability to view text files

my music. These text files contain detailed information about the
music files in the that folder (song, date, source info). I understand
that I could load tags and other stuff, but lets assume I don't have the

Thoughts? Appreciate the help

That was a really good review in Stereophile by Wes Philips. And as I
am a Slim Devices customer and supporter I thought it was very well
deserved. I hope Slim Devices sells a lot of Transporters at that price
and continues to plow the profits back into new products. But there are
two big things that audiophiles consider when making a purchase
decision:
1. How good are the technical specs?
2) How good does it sound?

It is certainly true that the systems with the best technical specs
don’t always sound the best. So it is very possible that the
Transporter could sound better than a comparable system with better
technical specs. And while that inversion isn’t uncommon (i.e. better
sound from lower specs) it’s usually achieved by companies that have
spent decades building audiophile stereo equipment. Although Slim is a
very creative and clever technology company, they haven’t yet proven
themselves in the audiophile stereo market, so it’s harder to make the
leap that a Trasporter would sound better than a system with better
technical specs that was designed by an audiophile company.

The truth is that there are several ways to pair an SB3, and now an
SBR, with an external DAC designed by a company with decades of
experience in the audiophile business, and which will also have much
better technical specs than a Transporter, as well as cost less. Of
course there might be a slight ease-of –use edge to the Transporter
over such a combination, as well as other positive considerations. I
look forward to trying out a Transporter one of these days, but it’s
hard to pay $2K when I consider the other combinations I could buy with
better tech specs and still have money left over for a Duet in another
room.

[slim] URL for live audio for WGCY

2008-01-11 Thread norderney

I would like to listen to WGCY via my Transporter, but I do not know
what the URL is for the audio feed.

Here is the link for the station -
http://www.wgcyradio.com/Aux%20Pages/Listen%20Live!.htm

Thanks

Such as which one?

The DAC1 is an excellent DAC but it does NOT beat Transporter on specs.
Also, it uses ASRC, which as expected makes for OK measurements but is
not universally believed to be without disadvantages in subjective
sound quality.

Also, note that at this level of performance, you can't really look at
two manufacturer's own specs side by side and expect a difference of
one or two dB to tell you much. They have to be tested on the same
equipment with the same cables etc, because these tests are going to be
pushing the limits of the measuring equipment itself. Benchmark's
published specs were done on AP, whereas our were done on the dScope.

If you are interested in how it stacks up against the DAC1 in
particular, here is a test I did which deomnstrates Transporter's
significantly lower jitter and noise floor. All products tested the
same instrument:

BetterDAC, your posts are quite ill-informed on the whole subject. You
should read up further on our products, and on DAC characteristics in
general, because your controversial viewpoints don't seem to be
supported by anything at all!

Most likely you need to open port 3483. More details about exactly what
you need to do is here:

Mr. Adams, It's a pleasure to get a response from the founder of Slim
Devices. Thank you. It's very impressive to see the founder of Slim
Devices as deeply involved in his company as you are. So it's easy to
see why you've been so successful with Slim Devices.

Having said that, I take exception to your assertion that my
controversial viewpoints don't seem to be supported by anything at
all! and that I am ill-informed on the whole subject.

I haven't written that many posts, but if you've read the few that I
have written I don't see how you could say they were unsupported or
ill-informed. Indeed several of them are very complimentary of your
products. And the post you're so thin-skinned about isn't ill-informed
at all. I’ve read a lot of the posts on the Slim Devices Forum and
there are some very bright people here, as well as some that truly are
“ill-informed”. I enjoy reading all of them. I suspect some of the
really bright guys might make some posts supporting my position and
challenging your assertions versus DAC1 or some of the other external
DAC options. But I’ll collect some public sources and web links and
respond to your challenge with information supporting my position.

I would have thought that one of the benefits of establishing this
Forum was to get some feedback from your clients: some good, some bad,
some stupid, but perhaps a few really good ideas mixed in with all the
noise and banter that you might use for a future product? Or was it
established just so that you could read uncritical compliments?

Thanks. A Shields-Up probe tells me that 3483 is open. I only have it

[slim] Whole House + wireless + flac ....SUCCESS!

2008-01-11 Thread jsunandmax

I have finally achieved musical nirvana. After about 5-6 months of
various problems, I thought some folks on 'the path' would appreciate
hearing a success story. Here's what I'm running:

ReadyNAS NV+ running Slimserver 6.5.4- w/ 3x 750gb drives
(3) Slimboxes in 3 seperate (2 distant) rooms
D-Link DIR-655 Router
(2) Linksys Range Expanders (for 2 distant rooms, these are key)

My collection is exclusively .flac, i'm up to about 1.2TB. Not sure
how many albums (Performance - Library Statistics Disabled of course),
but i'm guessing around 3000 albums?

For my stereos, I'm running:

Living Room
Sunfire Ultimate amp
Infinity Intermezzio 4.1T speakers

Office
Onix Tube amp
Rega R1 speakers

Bedroom
Naim 5i amp
PSB Image T65 Tower speakers

I read so many people having problems, and so much frustration on this
board (me included), I thought I would just let everyone know IT IS
POSSIBLE. Dont give-up!

(oh, i'm interfacing w/ the NV+ from a craptastic 500mhz PC running
W2k!)

Oh, and welcome to the forum. :)

Thanks for the welcome! But I still think you're being a little
thin-skinned about this. “guns blazing” and all that hyperbole.

I recently bought an SB3 and have been thoroughly enjoying it. It
really needed a better remote control and you have delivered on that
very nicely...see my previous posts. But there are always deficiencies
with every product ever made, and I have been doing quite a bit of
research looking for interim solutions. Indeed a lot of this Forum is
devoted to conversations about alternative or add-on solutions, and
involving your community of enthusiastic users/developers seems to have
been a fundamental design point of Slim Devices. But it seems my
criticism has struck a bit of a nerve, and it’s not going to be
difficult for me to prove. I’ll try and post an interesting contrast by
tomorrow that has both better technical specs, and costs less.

BTW, I'll happily change my handle if BetterDAC so offends you. It
wasn't meant to be silly just the first name that popped into my head
as I was planning to make a post but needed to supply a handle first.
