Re: [slim] Slimserver Database Question

2008-02-14 Thread ceejay

So, do you actually have BAND and ALBUM ARTIST tags in your files, and
is Slimserver ignoring them? If that's your problem you might need to
say more about the files types, and the exact tag names you are using.
For example, in FLAC afaik ORCHESTRA is not recognised - it has to be
BAND (thats the subject of an enhancement request I raised a long
time ago). And I seem to recall there being something about ALBUM
ARTIST vs ALBUMARTIST, but I could be wrong.

You shouldn't need to check the include ... in artists boxes just to
have the tags scanned.

As for the virus scanning problem, IIRC that was a problem with McAfee
blocking Slimserver from the MySql database, which was easily
resolvable by telling McAfee to ignore database files. Or are you
thinking of something else?

Anyway, 6.5 itself will soon be history, we're about to move on to 7.0.
So if I were you I'd hold off a little longer and then try it out - you
might be surprised by how much has changed for the better.

Re: [slim] Server finding one album per song (NOT in separate directories)

2008-02-14 Thread ceejay

Just to add to SMCs comment - try adding COMPILATION=1 on these tracks.

Separately - I'm intrigued by the comment about not doing a full scan
because it deletes playlists - that definitely should not be happening,
could you say more? Do you mean the current playlist on each player - if
so you can/should just save it if you want to keep it. Your fixed
playlists stored in the playlists directory aren't affected, surely?

Is there any merit in the possibility of users here being able to 'Rate'

Perhaps people with a higher rating have more weight when voting, and
people with a poor rating cannot vote at all.

I appreciate that for the few casual posters who seem particularly
prone to flaming it won't make a lot of difference, but the
risks/rewards of long-term posters might be better served? Just a

Re: [slim] SB3 stops randomly

2008-02-14 Thread dcote

hi slwiser!

interesting issue you are describing here. i have two SB3s and they
also both suffer from random stops while playing. i am curious if we
have similar problems and maybe we can find commonalities?

first, a description of my setup:
- WLAN g
- slimserver 6.5.5 (waiting for SC7 release)
- PIII, 700MHz, 1GB RAM
- virusscanner active (not norton)
- both SBs have at least 60% sig. strength
- network/bandwidth test checks out to max with no problems
- all other wlan devices (2 laptops, 1 PDA, 1 DVD player via
e-net/wlan bridge) work with no problems whatsoever
- around 9.000 tracks in library

my symptoms:
- SB3 will simply stop playing for no apparent reason. no specific
track/audioformat/track sequence seems to be reproduceable. the only
thing which is reproduceable, is that is occurs WAY more often when the
SBs are synched. altho it does happen when not synched, too.
- the other day, i *finally* got an error message (of sorts): out of
decoder RAM (or was it memory?). the message was strangely garbled on
the display as if there were pixel-errors. i think this is the first
time i actually saw the message, because i happened to be watching the
SB when it happened.
- after that, SB will react to the remote, but it will not produce
sound. (seems like the DSP/DAC crashed, but the rest is still ok) only
unplugging the unit will reset it.
- it only seems to happen when i play mixed audio formats, in my case:
vorbis + mp3.
- when the crash occurs, the SBs display is not showing what is being
played - it is one or two tracks ahead (!?) of the the track that was
being played. as if slimservr and SB have lost synch at some point...
- when synched, the stops will occur between every 5 minutes (track to
track) or sometimes play for hours before crashing. when unsynched, it
usually takes some hours to happen. almost as if two synched players
cause it to happen double as often as one!

what i have tried so far (with no results to speak of):
- re-played the same playlist again, to see if SB will crash on the
same track.
- used huge playlists (~700 tracks) vs. small ones (~30 tracks). as a
matter of fact, the small playlists will play once or even twice, only
to crash the player on the third time round.
- stopped just about all the other software running on my server
- exempted slimserver from my virusscanner.
- fixed IP

my suspicion:
- i have seen that error message before (out of decoder RAM), in
context with the vorbis decoder crashing on certain internet radio
stations: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4418
since i use vorbis a *lot*, this seems related.

@slwiser (or anyone else ;-): how much of this sounds familiar to you?

Totally agree.

But why can´t offensive posts be deleted/moderated, rather than whole
threads removed or locked? Sometimes it is uclear why action is being
taken against a thread other than it being plain stupid and the boiler
plate proposed is vague.

In the case of the Australia thread, if the thread was profane or

The battery is easily removable and is a mobile-phone type battery,
although it is a custom-job so, although replaceable, it would have to
be ordered from Logitech.

The only way to charge is to pop the remote into the cradle.

Note that recently Logitech enabled power management on the remote. IMHO
(at the risk of sounding like a fanboy) the result is spectacular, after
10 hours of usage the power indicator still showed half full (or half

hi leuzi!

me neither, until a few days ago.

would you mind decribing a bit more of your setup?
- wired? wireless?
- common vorbis bitrates/q-levels and encoders you use?
- mixed playlists? (mp3/vorbis/flac) how large are they typically?
- do you use saved playlists or create them as needed manually?
- do you let your SB play for hours at a time from a huge playlist or
manually keep changing the music?

btw. - i am currently trying the SBs wired and synched. (was a P.I.T.A.
to un-install them from their audio setups!) just a couple of minutes
ago, they stopped at the end of a song. display said now playing but
they weren't. at least they didnt freeze this time (odd, that) - i
pressed play on the remote and they started up again. re-playing the
same tracks was flawless, however...

I don't see any advantage over the cradle except that you can charge
more than one device at a time.
You still need to place the remote on the charging pad.
The cradle takes way less space and is more appealing to the (wife's)

I'm assuming that you don't want to fill in the box on Slimserver that
tells it where your music is stored. If this is the case then it will

At the moment you have a Slimserver with no music and a NAS with music

Slimserver where your music is stored.

Now that I've seen your other message in another thread I see that the
problem you are having is determining what the directory information
should be.

I don't know the TS-109 but usually a format of \\servername\directory\
will work. This UNC format should be the same for every box on the
network.

Servername would be the name by which your TS-109 is known on the
network and directory is the way you navigate down from the first
directory you get to on the TS-109 until you hit the head of the music
directory tree. eg \\TS-109\music or \\MyNAS\Music\MyMusic\ etc

I also thought of that, some other forums that I frequent have

But reputations and warnings are not a complete solution for a couple of

1) you need moderation anyway.

I don't know enough about this space to make technical recommendations

- the now playing screen is still showing on both SBs and the
spectrum analyzer has frozen. i can still scroll through menus, but
play will not commence.

- SB and SS skipped a track completely for no apparent reason, too.

- when i do press play (on remote or web-interface), i can see the
buffer re-filling back to 100% and the now playing screen shows the
correct track again - but no sound and the now playing progress
indicator does not move. so SS is still receiving and responding to
commands and even filling the SBs buffers properly.

conclusion so far:
- i do not have a WLAN problem, this is about something else. the fact
that both SBs crash so badly that only a power-down can revive them
indicates to me something wrong with the SBs firmware, not with SS, the
SB hardware, my network or anything else. i suspect the DSP/DAC
firmware.

ps. sorry slwiser if i hijacked your thread! please let me/us know how
much of this is familiar! ;-)

[slim] Any way of doing this?

2008-02-14 Thread MadScientist

Is there any way I can get SqueezeCenter to run a script when its starts
up? It would need to do this when it starts up again each time my
server comes out of standby. My server being a Dell PC running XP
pro.

The reason for this rather unusual request is that I want to have the
server in standby mode when not being used and to be able to control
the time between SB3 ceasing activity and the machine going back into
standby (several good reasons for this which I won’t bore you with).

At the moment this is not possible since the PC goes back to standby 2
min after SB3 activity ceases and it does not appear possible to change
this. If I can run a script to simulate a key press on SqueezeCenter
start, then the time to standby should come under control of the
Windows power management settings which I can modify to suit.

Any help appreciated

Could you try in Server Settings - File Types to transcode to another

Following on from your message I downloaded Slimserver 6.5.4 and the issue

I'll follow this up with a bug report for SC7.0 - in the meantime I guess
I'll need to stay with Slimserver, which is a shame because SC7.0 is a much
nicer interface all round.

 HTH
The main reason I haven't upgraded is that I put together a
considerable amount of scripting to link what is going on with the
Squeezebox to our web site and I also modified the Perl of a plug-in I
use.

It looked like upgrading would require much gutting of code, and I just
wasn't in the mood after all of the effort it took to get things working
in the first place.

So I'll stick with obsolescence for a bit longer.

I'll post a link to my music listing for the morbidly curious if and
when I get it working.

Re: [slim] SB3 stops randomly

2008-02-14 Thread dcote

superpin, apart from this bug:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4418

i was not able to find a similar bug in bugzilla. not surprising tho,
because diagnosing a sporadic and non-reproduceable problem like this
is a PITA. ;-) i work in IT, and i run as fast as i can whenever i come
across problems like these.

today i have some time in the homeoffice tho, so i can do some serious
diagnostics.

here is what i will try next:
- as mark suggested, i will transcode vorbis to mp3 and see if the
problm goes away.
if it doesnt - not a vorbis problem, more likely a problem with the
ogg container format not being handled properly by SS, no?
if it does:
- i will try homogeneous playlists consisting entirely of vorbis or
mp3 tracks.

ps. as i am typing this, it happened again. :-( SB just changed the
now playing screen to another track (new track is displaying in now
playing, but the old one is still playing). and sure enough, at the end
of the current track, the SBs stop.

new data:
- rebooted the SBs, resumed playing at the track before the stop.
played no problem this time.
- the progress indicator behaved strangely. it displayed the total
time of the track in now playing, but it stopped at the precise total
time of the track that was previously playing. complicated - let me try
to explain:

DISPLAY:
now playing: (40 of 765) (**__)-3:46
8. the night before - Dessous - gamat 3000

alternating to played time gives me:
now playing: (40 of 765) (**__)4:21
8. the night before - Dessous - gamat 3000

alternating to buffer fullness gives me:
now playing: (40 of 765) ()100%
8. the night before - Dessous - gamat 3000

it stopped at precisely the total runtime of the *previous* track being
played, which was:
Il Cherchio Rosso - Nicola Conte - Bossa Per Due with 4.21 mins playing
time...!?

weird: this time, they didnt skip a track, but just went on to the next
one in the playlist.

Re: [slim] Can we avoid inflamatory titles?

2008-02-14 Thread juniper

I like this forum very much. I have received lots of helpful patient
advice and sometimes when I have felt brave enough contributed some
ideas, help myself. I have no personal experience of being flamed,
trolled, nor have I seen any instance of it. That maybe is because the
threads I follow do not attract that type of abuse.

I am however worried with the idea of moderation because of the risk
that it it could be perceived as a form of control by the
authorities in this case Logitech.

It appears to be a bit sledgehammer to crack a nut, and lock down a
really useful thread, which may have been running for some time. Surely
it is better to remove an offensive post, if more than n members have
complained, as an alternative to a moderator locking down a thread
which they perceive to be going inflammatory.

Other alternative approaches to the problem have also been proposed in
this thread. Is there any way that we the members / peers could vote on
what we feel to be the most appropriate way of dealing with the problem.
We are all grown ups and members of this SB community.

There is the Execute Script plugin, which lets you run scripts from the
Squeezebox, rather than from SqueezeCenter. I think you could do what

I don't use a PC, so I have no idea what the actual script should be.

On my Mac, I use a little program that keeps it alive and I run a

Re: [slim] SB3 stops randomly

got some results faster than i thought...

i am transcoding vorbis to flac now - still problems, but slightly
different.

after about 10 tracks, now playing skipped ahead again as before. but
this time the SB's progress indicator has frozen at max:
now playing (51 of 765) (***)04:52
6. On the rails

progress bar is full and time is not moving, BUT it IS playing!
(amazing)

ok, now next song: display now playing skipped ahead to next track
way too early (about 30 sec.).
getting the same symptoms:
now playing (51 of 765) (***)05:00
4. Extensions Of Life

progress bar is full and time is not moving, BUT it IS playing!
(amazing)

ok, next song: display skipped ahead again way too early. and so on and
so forth...

it seems as if the vorbis tracks are somehow throwing the SBs and SS
out of step. even with transcoding, something goes seriously wrong at
some point. frankly speaking, i am starting to think it may not be SBs
fault after all, but what SS is feeding it. maybe something wrong with
the way SS deals with the ogg-container...?

btw. statistics so far are: 4 stops in ~54 tracks. that is too much and
not sporadic anymore. :-(

2008-02-14 Thread ert

I just had almost this exact thing happen to me, too. Sony remote with
very old (circa 2003) SlimP3, worked fine for years, suddenly stopped
working.

- Remote didn't work with either old SlimP3 or newer Squeezebox v2
- Other remote worked fine with both old SlimP3 and Squeezebox v2
(wasn't the IR receiver)
- Volume up/down was still fine (wasn't the IR transmitter)
- Put in fresh batteries, problem still there.
- Turned on d_ir debugging setting, watched slimserver.log. Lots of IR
activity, all unknown (IR: c091 - unknown)

So I remembered this was originally a multi-purpose remote. I tried
each of the TV, VCR, CBL/SAT, DVD buttons, and found that pressing the
DVD butting fixed the problem. It was just stuck in the wrong mode.

Good luck.

[slim] Pls Clarify Duet IR capabilities

2008-02-14 Thread TechHome

Let me start with my praise of all that the folks behind Slimdevices
have done! I've been an enthusiastic user since the SB2 came out and
take advantage of Nokia 770 control and SSH web streaming to
Softsqueeze as well as the XM Radio plugin.

The application I have in mind with the Duet is a to hide the duet
receiver in a closet with a standard Denon stereo receiver. I'd like
the Duet remote to be able to control volume and switch power to the
Denon. Denon on-off should be linked to on-off of the Duet receiver.
irt system volume, I'd like the RCA analog output of the Duet receiver
to be fixed and for the Duet remote to vary the volume of the Denon. I
use this functionality today with the SB2 Felix's fine IR Blaster
plugin.

My understanding is that the Duet remote DOES have an IR emitter and
that it will soon be enabled to control the SB1/2/3 via IR and that it
COULD be enabled to control 3rd party equipment within line of site (NG
for stuff in a closet). The Duet receiver DOES NOT have IR blasting
capability in its hardware implementation.

I can use a Duet controller with a SB2/3 along with the IR Blaster
plugin to do what I want, but the Duet controller is not currently
offered for sale independently from the receiver. This will also be
expensive ($700); paying for a VFD that no-one will see and a Duet
receiver that is not needed!

Do I have this right?

Will the duet controller be sold without the receiver?

If so, has pricing been determined?

Thanks!
doug

PS: The decision to omit IR blasting capability in the Duet receiver is
a bitter pill for me.

Re: [slim] Any way of doing this?

2008-02-14 Thread pichonCalavera

Since the software is open-source, I\'ve done something similar
(executing a script at shutdown of Squeezecenter), adding some lines of
code to the stop process, but I use Debian Etch and I modify
/etc/init.d/squeezecenter (the startup script in Debian), not sure if
on Windows XP this can be acomplished, as maybe this is done a bit
different. Right now I\\\'m not at reach of my server, so I\\\'m going
to check when I get home.

That is indeed a pity. It can't use the PowerSwitch plugin either, which
would be very handy for a device that (even though it looks nice enough)
seems particularly suitable to being locked in a closet with an amp.

Yes, it will be available for $299 (or E299 if you're in Europe).

PS: The decision to omit IR blasting capability in the Duet receiver is
 a bitter pill for me.

Perhaps SD misjudged this one, I've seen more posts like yours.

Just curious. The time interval you described could easily be adjusted
with the Windows Power management setting in control panel. Why do you
need a plugin to do that?

Completely agree with your opening statement!

With that said, lack of programmable IR is just downright silly. I'm
not in the for $300 I want a universal remote group. But I would
deffinately want at least the *basics* in IR programming/learning like
simple AVR/AMP control (volume, mute, on, off, input select, etc...)

No, that's the problem. The time to sleep after a wake-on-lan can't be
controlled by XP power management. It's 2 minutes - like it or not.
Once a key is pressed then it does come under my control and this is

Do you have any permissions set on the NAS? Perhaps they are
restricting access and preventing slimserver from accessing it. Do you
have slimserver set up to run as a service? You can see what this is

Re: [slim] Scanning For Music On Slimserver

2008-02-14 Thread Zaragon

If you don't have a local DNS resolver the using the IP address is the
right way to go. Make sure that the TS IP address is consistant, either
statically assigned or reserved in the DHCP server.

Whilst the UNC path ought to be the same to access the music from the
network as from the TS itself I could envisage problems if the TS turns
the call around within itself rather than using the network stack.

A couple of things to try. Save a shortcut to the TS music folder on
your windows desktop then look at it's properties to see the UNC.

If that doesn't work then start a cmd box (start-run type cmd and OK).
Use a command: net view \\192.168.x.x
This should give you a run down of all the network visible directories
on the TS just in case they are different to what you see in windows.

If that doesn't help then you will probably need to gain a terminal
access to the TS to check permissions of the unix path to the music
files. Unfortunately I can't help you in that respect as I've never had
a TS.

Another thought occurs. If you have created accounts for users on the
TS into which they can store their own personal files then you will
probably need to give the music directory structure access for the
guest user ie one that logs in with no credentials. An alternative is
to grant access to the account under which the Slimserver is running on
the TS platform.

 following problem for me.
 1. some internet radio stream not playing until I hit pause twice.
 2. Chinese large font display top 2 pixel cut off.
 3. Some album art in unicode directories not showing up.
 4. More reliable wake-on-lan.

Hi

I downloaded the Windows .exe file, but have not yet run it. There was
also a .zip version which I ignored. Do I need to uninstall my current
version 6.54? I can't seem to locate instructions for version 7.0.
Also, there does appear to be a version of the Sirius plugin for SC7.

Thanks.

setting COMPILATION=1?

I installed the Windows .exe last night on my secondary server, and it
uninstalled 6.54 for me. I actually wasn't expecting this and might
have preferred to keep the previous version around (or at least be
warned that it was going to be removed), but everything is working OK
with it so far.

Did it keep all your preferences, directories etc? Did you need to
uninstall any plugins and reinstall ones designed for SC7?

deleted.

This seems to have been an ownership problem. The .m3u files weren't
owned by the slimserver user, and for whatever reason the server's
solution is to delete them entirely.

That behaviour sounds very odd. Unless the playlists folder is within
the cache folder perhaps??

Before spending any more time troubleshooting this, you might want to
try a 7.0 download - there are a lot of changes, and there won't be any
more bugfixes to the 6.5 branch AFAIK.

[slim] Best way to make systems more available to the average Joe?

2008-02-14 Thread bobkoure

First off, I love my Squeezebox and SqueezeCenter to death (so long as I
haven't done something to break 'em)
But... I'm a geek. I've written drivers and firmware and applications -
so the fact that I find installation dead easy means, well, nothing.

We've been getting more-than-occasional posts on the forums with fairly
inflammatory titles. I read that as average-Joes pissed off that
something isn't just working for them.
IMHO, the problem here is that they blame the product - and then tell
their friends (you know, that old saw about if you like something you
tell a friend, if you hate it you tell everyone you know).
I'm sure that SD and Logitech see this as a problem, but we have a
group of very smart people here, who, so long as they remember that the
rest of the world isn't necessarily as technically adept as they are,
may actually have a brilliant idea or two as to what to do.

So... all that said, and, just to start:
It seems to me that maybe SD had ought to think about having some kind
of installer certification , including training and testing - and a
way for those certified installers to get published - maybe here on
SD. I'd guess that'd help the loves music, has money, but technically
clueless part of the market. (Note - I'm not saying that this is a
brilliant idea - but it might help you think of one).

Or is this kind of thread a really dumb idea? (self-doubt creeps in...
guess I'd have tried product marketing if I didn't have that problem
:-) )

[slim] Add genre after extraction?

2008-02-14 Thread lorirobn

Hi -

I have ripped most of my cd collection, using Exact Audio Copy.
Now, over 100 cds later, I am realizing I did not pay attention to the
genre field. I think it is missing from most of my cds.

Is there any way I can go in and add genre to my .flac files now, so I
can browse music by genre?

Many thanks...
Lori

Re: [slim] Best way to make systems more available to the average Joe?

2008-02-14 Thread autopilot

I think it's a daft idea personally. Giving a product a 'installer
certificate' would just make the product even more complicated to
average Joe. It's would not help sales, possibly harm them.

If people can's get on with the product, maybe they need to look
elsewhere. Apple or Sono's for example - really simple to install and
use, but at the expensive of functionality, customisability,
flexibility and community plugins, etc etc. But most people cant accept
that something might be a little difficult for them and blame the
product.

Also, if someone is so technically incompetent that they need a
professional installation, you could argue that they should not bother
at all - as how are they going to cope with maintaining it, trouble
shooting network issues and ripping and tagging music etc when the
'certified installer' is not around? Slimserver/Squeeeze Center is far
from perfect, but I would in fact argue that the initial installation
is not actually that hard, most problems people have are with their
existing Wifi network, PC or badly tagged music, not the Squeezebox
specifically.

My biggest fear has always been since the logitech acquisition that the
products could be 'dumbed' down to give them broader audience.
