[slim] Failing Irish radio stations

2008-02-16 Thread vinnielo

The UTV set of radio stations refuse to play on the Squeezebox.
They just rebuffer from 0 to 100%.

Such stations include:
Q102 mms://stream.u.tv/q102
Live95FM mms://stream.u.tv/95fm

I've tried with both SqueezeNetwork and SqueezeCenter to prove that it
isn't a geographical issue.
Could it be a codec issue?

I've tried using #slim:noscan=1

2008-02-16 Thread mikeswingler

As a recent newbie and a non- geek Joe, I have been following this
discussion with great interest. The first place I got stuck was ripping
100 cd's to mp3 using itunes, then discovering the sound quality was
poor. After looking at the forums I discovered EAC and also downloaded
Foobar (which I haven't used yet), but have now got all my cd's onto
the computer using EAC/FLAC. (had to buy a 500gb external hd when
computer full). My SB3 seems to work ok, although it often switches
itself off. As a UK resident my main problem is that the non-geek
facilities Rhapsody, Pandora and radio are all aimed at a US customer.
The UK equivalents Napster and Lastfm are not integrated and don't seem
to be able to be accessed as easily as the US ones. The SB3 is sold by
PCWORLD in the UK which is the main retail outlet in the country.
Logitech is an international brand. But your average newbie/non-geek
finds he has bought a piece of US technology that is not that easy to
set up and no one at his local store will know much about it. The
forums are a great support and its enjoyable joining in, but I find
I've got a new hobby, not a simple addition to my hifi system. (and I
still haven't discovered how to make a playlist yet - is that what
foobar does ??)

Re: [slim] Failing Irish radio stations

2008-02-16 Thread bpa

I think there is a limitation that SB3 native needs mms URLs to use http
transport. Usually a station forget to check the box to enable this
facility (which also allows radio to tunnel using http through
firewalls).

If you have a Windows PC then try disabling Native/Built-in WMA
decoding in Server Setting/Advanced/Filetypes. This will force
handling of the stream by wmadec on PC. If it plays then I think http
is the problem.

[slim] SC7 with Vista- won't stay awake

2008-02-16 Thread parrydave44

I've just switched to a new Vista PC and installed SC7. I'm having a
problem with wake-on-lan. I can get the SB3 to bring PC out of sleep
mode, but it doesn't stay awake. Keeps going back to sleep after the
sleep period set in Vista.

Previous PC (Vista) with 6.54 worked fine.

I have wake on magic packet set.
I have wake on directed packet off (as it wakes as soon as going to
sleep otherwise). In the power plans, I have Prevent sleep when
sharing media set to on (not sure it is relevant).

Any suggestions how to get SC7 to override the Vista sleep schedule?

Thanks

 Mike Swingler
 UK non-geek Joe
Mike - the easiest way to create a playlist is to just load all the
tunes you want, in the order you want, into your player (which could be
softsqueeze on your PC while something else is playing in the living
room) and then just click save - and you will be prompted for a
playlist name to save this list as - and you're done.
Judging from another thread here, if you have parties, have a list of
tunes you've created and let friends mess with the SB - save your list
to a playlist.
And... -treasure- your average-Joe-ness (or maybe, being in the UK
that'd be average-bloke-ness(?)). Once you get comfortable doing
something, you won't have that perspective any more.

Without being a programmer myself (heh) what I'd picture is an SC

actions and delays, and a button that writes these commands to a script
that gets sent to the SBC.

There would be another plugin on the SBC that would activate this
pre-generated script on command. Just point the SBC at the equipment.

The SBC isn't really suitable to send individual IR commands like a
true universal remote (not enough buttons) but a series of commands
following a pre-arranged script, probably! The SC IRBlaster plugin GUI
would be perfect for this - doing it on the SBC would be incredibly
 clunky.

Re: [slim] Internet Radio suddenly getting garbled

2008-02-16 Thread ds2021

I routinely listen to Live365 stations, although not Soundscape. I have
not encountered this issue.

Does it occur with all the stations you listen to via Live365? Does it
replicate if you connect via SqueezeNetwork?

If it was me, I would update to the latest SC7 build, log out and log
in to Live365 via the SB or SC interface, and try other stations. If it
persists, I would then try SN.

I have not used an SB1 for a long time (my brother inherited it), and
could not comment on whether or not that hardware could be at fault.
Perhaps a Slim Devices representative could chime in here, or you may
pose the question via a support inquiry or bug report.

Re: [slim] SB3 stops randomly

2008-02-16 Thread dcote

hey phil, of course you can! :-)

why do i use vorbis?
1. because i can. the main reason i bought the squeezeboxes is because
the feature list says they play vorbis natively.
2. i am too lazy to encode my songs twice - lossless for at home and
lossy for on the road. maintaining every track twice is a PITA.
3. some friends of mine and i have ABXed the vorbis files i use
(preferrably gtune3b2 encoded @ q6) vs. wav/flac. we could not reliably
find differences. as a matter of fact, when we tried to find the version
that subjectively sounded best (not which was the original!), the gtune
encoded vorbis came out ahead! no joke. we were astounded ourselves.
4. mp3 needs a lot more bits to sound as good, which we also found by
ABXing. i would need some HQ LAME @ 256 kbit VBR to compete with vorbis
@ q6, which is still ~30% smaller.
5. vorbis is patent-free. i resent the fact that some corporation could
nail me for encoding my music in their proprietary format.
6. my portable player supports vorbis, too. so does my GF's ipod, after
we installed rockbox on it.
7. my server is completely full of hard disks with no further expansion
room. flac would instantly increase my library's size from ~35GB to
~200GB.
8. i use my WLAN for other things sich as mpeg4 playback as well - i
need the bandwidth.

Re: [slim] SB3 stops randomly

2008-02-16 Thread dcote

DanH: sounds like a very plausible explanation to me. i am pretty sure i
didnt have this problem in the beginning, either.

Phil: hmmm... i am not sure if that will yield results that are
different from simply using regular mp3 files i already have. besides,
i wouldnt even know which vorbis files to convert, since i have no
conclusive evidence which specific ones are causing this.

new experimental results:

- playing a purely vorbis playlist *will* cause the stops to occur.
sometimes as early as after the 10th song, sometimes as late as after
the 40th. re-starting the same playlist from the start never has
reproduced the stops at the same position, they occur at seemingly
random tracks and positions.

- the stop is *always* preceeded by a sudden jump or skip one or two
tracks ahead in the now playing display. slimserver's web-interface
skips ahead too!

- a purely mp3 playlist has been playing for some hours now with no
stop.

- i tried playing purely vorbis UN-synched on one player last night,
to see if the problem is connected to the synch function or not.
unfortunately, the SB stopped after 11 tracks sometime in the night.
:-(

the summary so far:
1. it seems only vorbis files decoded natively will cause the stops.
2. the now playing display *always jumps/skips one or two tracks
ahead and freezes the progress bar. this applies to the web-interface
and the SBs VFD. this happens when natively playing vorbis as well as
transcoding to flac.
3. even though it also occurs when un-synched, it does not seem as
often.
4. transcoding vorbis to flac/mp3 will not crash the SB anymore, but
will still cause the now playing display to corrupt and has caused an
utter and total slimserver crash.
5. playing native mp3 or flac does not seem to cause problems.

my newest hypothesis: there is something wrong with the ogg container
file handling on the slimserver, since eliminating the SB as a problem
source through transcoding did not solve the problem. since the now
playing display is controlled by slimserver, its corruption also
points in that direction. the SB's DSP+DAC crashing may only be a
symptom, not the root cause.

i guess there is only one more thing for me to do: try SC7... :-(

Yep. Prevent Sleep plugin is enabled. I disabled and re-enabled which
seems to have changed things.

When I use windows then stop, PC seems to sleep after x mins as set.
If I wake it by pressing power on SB3 remote it wakes ok. Goes back to

awake, but now doesn't go back to sleep when I turn off the SB3.
Almost as though the prevent sleep plugin isn't releasing the Windows

Yup, completely agree. Nice as it is, but I just need some basic AVR

suffice.

I currently have my SB3 IR remote programmed into my AVR remote for

that subjectively sounded best (not which was the original!), the gtune
encoded vorbis came out ahead! no joke. we were astounded ourselves.
 4. mp3 needs a lot more bits to sound as good, which we also found by
ABXing. i would need some HQ LAME @ 256 kbit VBR to compete with vorbis

Ah - I see. All perfectly reasonable. It does seem like you (or rather
the SB/SS setup) has an issue with this format that doesn't affect the
other formats. Sorry I can't be of any help.

because I just moved 200GB of music files onto this drive. i guess it

[slim] Now Playing not workling properly?

2008-02-16 Thread chris . mason

Hi all,

I have a PC running Ubuntu 7.10, with SlimServer 6.5.4.

I recently re-installed everything on this machine, after buying a new
hard disk. I put back everything as it was before.

When I play a track through my Squeezebox, I used to be able to go
right at the Now Playing menu, which would show you the song playing,
then right again to be able to browse the attributes of that song
(title, artist, album etc).

However, now all I can do is go right to the song playing, right again
only shows the song title information, and nothing else. I'm not sure
I'm making myself clear...

Anyone else see this behaviour before? It might be a plugin problem -
I did update all my plugins - but I don't see how.

Any help appreciated.

Chris.

Heh heh, great!

Most of what you typed above is completely lost on me (being the epitome
of the technologically challenged). *rubs eyes*

It would become much clearer if you played around with the IRBlaster
interface.

Plus the structure and programming are already almost there. I haven't
looked at the programming nor do I have the skill, but as-is, the plugin
executes a script based on what you enter in the interface.

If this script could be passed to an as-yet unbuilt SBC plugin, then
all it would have to do would be to pass the commands to the IR port,
following the delays you have selected. The plugin could be fairly
minimal, it would be just an extra menu item that would execute the
script when selected.

Easy for me to say, but hard for me to do as I have no programming
experience with lua or perl.

But I'm gathering that at some point, when the proper plug-in is
written, I could (possibly) accomplish my goal of simple AVR control
via IR from within the SBC. Correct?

Yes, there's no reason why not. The SBC currently has a test applet
that mimics the SB3 remote control and controls an SB2/3/Transporter
just fine by IR.

[slim] SB3 and Audioengine 2 - current draw

2008-02-16 Thread MuckleEck

I have just made a few current measurements on my kitchen SB3 connected
to a pair of AudioEngine 2 loudspeakers.

All currents are measured on a 20A scale and at 240V (nominal). There
is a +/- 0.02A error.

Squeezebox 3 in standby with display off (or zero brightness) 0.02A
Squeezebox 3 in standby with display full brightness 0.03A
Squeezebox 3 AE2 in standby display on 0.07A
Squeezebox 3 AE2 in standby display off 0.06A
There was no discernible difference in current by switching the AE2
volume from off to 100% with the Squeezebox 3 in standby so can
conclude that the AE2s are siwthcing off with zero input.

Playing Music

(playing Robert Plant and Alison Krauss with replaygain, FLAC
compresion level 0, wireless network)

AE2 volume set to 50% - Squeezebox 3 volume set to 50 current peaked at
0.13A

AE2 volume set to 50% - Squeezebox 3 volume set to 100% current peaked
at 0.25A

If there are any other results people would like to see just ask.

Re: [slim] DAC quality...SBR vs. USB-DAC vs. Apple TV

2008-02-16 Thread bigfool1956

Unfortunately I don't have an SB3 or an SBR to compare with the ApplTV,
I have a transporter.

However, I also have an ApplTV, and my opinion of the analogue output
is that it is extremely poor, with no dynamics or life in it at all.
Consequently I use it via its optical out straight into my AV receiver,
in which manner it performs quite well.

However there is more to the difference between the Slim products and
the AppleTV. In particular the AppleTV is aimed at an AV experience
rather than a straight music experience, and as such is useless without
being connected to a TV, and in addition it is set up to use a
widescreen TV, not a 4:3 ratio screen.

Basically the products are aimed at slightly different user needs, and
you must decide what your needs are before you can decide which is the
best product to met them. I personally think the AppleTV is good at
what it does for its price-point, but I wouldn't want it in a music
only system.

Read the manual?

Seriously, though, there is a remote control reference in both the
printed documentation and from Help on the SlimServer/SqueezeCenter UI.
Lots of good tips on how the buttons work.

At any rate, the PLAY/ADD buttons work as follows:

Press *PLAY* to clear the Now Playing list and start playing the
track/album you selected.

Press *ADD* (the '+' button) to add to the end of the Now Playing
list.

Press and Hold *ADD* to insert the track(s) to the Now Playing list,
immediately following the current song.

If you want to skip the remainder of the current track at that point,
just press *FFW*.

[slim] Transporter fonts

2008-02-16 Thread LeifPederson

Has anyone successfully modified the font files that are used by
Transporter? I'd like to have a narrower font used for the second line
of the Title/Artist/Album so I can fit more on that line. The three
line display is too small. The next size up is the one that I'd like
to change.

It might be beyond the capabilities of the Transporter, but it would be
cool if I could select one of two fonts in the title display. Then for
example I could do

TITLE by ARTIST from ALBUM

and have the words by and from be in one font. And the actual text
displated for TITLE, ARTIST and ALBUM maybe in an italic font.

If anyone has any experience with this kind of thing (on the
Transporter), I'd sure like to learn from you.

Thanks,
Leif

Your obvious intuition must work differently than most.

There's the 'party mode' idea, currently being debated in another
thread and for the last several years. Essentially a concept that
would lock the interface into working like that of a jukebox. It would
keep anyone selecting songs from clearing the playlist. New songs could

likely to be implemented any time soon.

It would be nice if the squeezebox could be a useful tool to create and

And for what? It's not difficult to clear a playlist. Playlists take
time to compile. Taking five seconds to clear them with the clear

Re: [slim] The Play button

2008-02-16 Thread JimC

I am saying that the obvious intuitive function for the play button
would be to add the song immediately after the current position in the
playlist and begin to play it.

Obvious because...? Intuitive because...? The iPod, which is probably
the best known digital music access interface in the world, doesn't work
that way. Nor does iTunes, the most used music manager in the world.
My car stereo, my CD player, my tape deck, my turntable, etc. don't
work that way, either.

What might be obvious to you may very well confuse someone else. It's
about point-of-view, previous experience, etc. Every device takes some
level of learning, and with an installed base of customers that already
use the current methodology, changing it would create grief for a lot
of people.

I'm not saying the way it works today is the right way but it is THE
way it works.

Working As Designed is really only a good response when the design
makes sense. But, hey, y'all stick to your guns on this and let the
Squeezebox controls continue to baffle and frustrate beginners.

See above. Personally, when I became a part of this team and used my
first Squeezebox, I made similar mistakes, primarily because I'd worked
on the design of MP3 players, music managers, etc. in the past and made
assumptions about the controls based on that work. After using the SB
for a bit, I understood the decision behind the controls, and while I
don't agree with 100% of them, find the remote/menus easy to deal
with.

From my personal point-of-view, I'd prefer to see Play/Pause function
overloaded on a single button (because that how it's done on a huge
number of devices), use ADD to put music in the Now Playing list, and
have a Clear Now Playing list menu item. Of course, that will
confuse some people who would go to an album or artist and press PLAY
to play that music, instead of ADD to queue it up. You could say that
PLAY would also add to Now Playing, but what happens if music is
already playing? Does it pause or queue (or even both!)? It gets
complicated, pretty quickly.

Believe it or not, an awful lot of thought has gone into the current
behaviors and they are a pretty balanced compromise that give you the
functionality we want to deliver without too many modalities or
buttons.

What I usually do to test this is to load the http:// version of the

an http problem. In the case of the UTVs, they open up a copy of WMP, so
I don't think it's that.

Is their anyway I can access Slimserver now?

I just tried doing a full rescan - no difference.
I did wonder if it was a MusicIP problem - I've just realised its not
running, but I since did another rescan, to no avail.

Another symptom - when you select browse - album - album name -
track name - you got nothing - comlete blank, after going right on
the track name, which is similar to what happens on Now Playing.
All very odd. It does sound like an attributes/database issue though.

Chris.

[slim] Cannot Scan Multiple Disks with Mac Version of Squeezecenter 7

2008-02-16 Thread aeo12

I just got a new Mac with the 10.5 OS and have been attempting to scan
my music library on the Mac version of Squeezecenter 7 (the 2/16/2008
nightly). My music library is split onto 3 different hard drives. The
Squeezecenter scan reads the files in the music folder on my primary
drive with no problem. However, it will not read the alias files in
the same folder that link to the music folders on the other drives.
When I click on the alias files, I can open the music files on the
other drives, so I think I've created the alias files correctly. Any
suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong? My total Mac experience
is now about 30 hours elapsed time (with some spent sleeping), so I'm
assuming user error of some type is the most likely problem.

SlimServer/SqueezeCenter can't use OS X aliases... you need to create a
symlink. There's no easy, GUI-based way to do this with 10.4 (I haven't
upgraded to 10.5 yet so I don't know if they've added that
functionality). I use a third-party application called Make Symlink
(found 'here' (http://www.naratt.com/MakeSymlink.html)). It installs
as a context menu (accessed via either a right-click or Ctrl-Click) and
is easy to use.

Install Make Symlink, right-click on the other music folders, and
select Make Symlink from the context menu. That's pretty much all you
need to do! Copy the symlink into the folder SqueezeCenter is set to
use for music and rescan your library. You should be all set.

Re: [slim] iTunes alternatives

2008-02-16 Thread Lorrin

Sorry for the late follow-up. I did eventually resolve my iTunes library
rebuilds. I don't understand what was going on. It seems to have been
issue with confused resource forks on the file server (an
Infrant/Netgear ReadyNAS) on which I store my iTunes library. Some
combination of carefully deleting all the hidden files containing the
resource forks and temporarily connecting via SMB/CIFS instead of
AppleShare did the trick. (I prefer AppleShare since it seems to more
gracefully handle my machine going in and of sleep.)

[slim] printout of the library

I would like to have a printout of my music library. Selecting the music
of the next moment requires some inspiration, and this is supported by a
simple print out stating all my tracks. One set of papers showing all

Who knows a programme for such a printout that I can configure on my

[slim] Missing accented files: iTunes and composed vs decomposed unicode

2008-02-16 Thread Lorrin

Files with accents in their names aren't showing up in my SlimServer
library. This is an iTunes interaction problem.

For example, I see this in the log file:
2008-02-16 22:23:51.7372 iTunes: file not found:
/Volumes/media/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Wir Sind Helden/Soundso/04
Fu#776;r Nichts Garantieren.mp3

The corresponding entry in my iTunes Music Library.xml is this:
keyLocation/keystringfile://localhost/Volumes/media/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Wir%20Sind%20Helden/Soundso/04%20Fu%CC%88r%20Nichts%20Garantieren.mp3/string

Note the u%CC%88: that's a u-umlaut created with a u followed by a
Combining Diaeresis (dialytika).

If I browse to the file in Firefox, the URL I end up with this:
file:///Volumes/media/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Wir%20Sind%20Helden/Soundso/04%20F%C3%BCr%20Nichts%20Garantieren.mp3

Note it uses %C3%BC to get the u-umlaut directly.

It seems like somewhere along the way there's a failure to recognize
that the decomposed Unicode path in the iTunes Music Library.xml is
equivalent to the composed Unicode that is the name of the file on
disk.

My SlimServer setup involves three machines: a Mac that runs iTunes, a
file server (Infrant/NetGear ReadyNAS) that stores the music library,
and an Ubuntu machine that runs SlimServer. The Mac accesses the NAS
via AppleShare and the Ubuntu machine accesses it via NFS.

SlimServer Version: 6.5.4 - 12568 - Debian - EN - utf8
Perl Version: 5.8.8 i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.45-Debian_1ubuntu3.1

Thanks for any help...
