Re: [slim] Best way to make systems more available to the average Joe?
As a recent newbie and a non- geek Joe, I have been following this discussion with great interest. The first place I got stuck was ripping 100 cd's to mp3 using itunes, then discovering the sound quality was poor. After looking at the forums I discovered EAC and also downloaded Foobar (which I haven't used yet), but have now got all my cd's onto the computer using EAC/FLAC. (had to buy a 500gb external hd when computer full). My SB3 seems to work ok, although it often switches itself off. As a UK resident my main problem is that the non-geek facilities Rhapsody, Pandora and radio are all aimed at a US customer. The UK equivalents Napster and Lastfm are not integrated and don't seem to be able to be accessed as easily as the US ones. The SB3 is sold by PCWORLD in the UK which is the main retail outlet in the country. Logitech is an international brand. But your average newbie/non-geek finds he has bought a piece of US technology that is not that easy to set up and no one at his local store will know much about it. The forums are a great support and its enjoyable joining in, but I find I've got a new hobby, not a simple addition to my hifi system. Re: [slim] Failing Irish radio stations
I think there is a limitation that SB3 native needs mms URLs to use http transport. Usually a station forget to check the box to enable this facility (which also allows radio to tunnel using http through firewalls). If you have a Windows PC then try disabling Native/Built-in WMA decoding in Server Setting/Advanced/Filetypes. This will force handling of the stream by wmadec on PC. If it plays then I think http is the problem. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43541 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

hey phil, of course you can! :-) why do i use vorbis? 1. because i can. the main reason i bought the squeezeboxes is because the feature list says they play vorbis natively. 2. i am too lazy to encode my songs twice - lossless for at home and lossy for on the road. maintaining every track twice is a PITA. 3. some friends of mine and i have ABXed the vorbis files i use (preferrably gtune3b2 encoded @ q6) vs. wav/flac. we could not reliably find differences. as a matter of fact, when we tried to find the version that subjectively sounded best (not which was the original!), the gtune encoded vorbis came out ahead! no joke. we were astounded ourselves. 4. mp3 needs a lot more bits to sound as good, which we also found by ABXing. i would need some HQ LAME @ 256 kbit VBR to compete with vorbis @ q6, which is still ~30% smaller. 5. vorbis is patent-free. i resent the fact that some corporation could nail me for encoding my music in their proprietary format. 6. my portable player supports vorbis, too. so does my GF's ipod, after we installed rockbox on it. 7. my server is completely full of hard disks with no further expansion room. flac would instantly increase my library's size from ~35GB to ~200GB. 8. i use my WLAN for other things sich as mpeg4 playback as well - i need the bandwidth. -- dcote dcote's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9701 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43298 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] SB3 stops randomly
DanH: sounds like a very plausible explanation to me. i am pretty sure i didnt have this problem in the beginning, either. Phil: hmmm... i am not sure if that will yield results that are different from simply using regular mp3 files i already have. besides, i wouldnt even know which vorbis files to convert, since i have no conclusive evidence which specific ones are causing this. new experimental results: - playing a purely vorbis playlist *will* cause the stops to occur. sometimes as early as after the 10th song, sometimes as late as after the 40th. re-starting the same playlist from the start never has reproduced the stops at the same position, they occur at seemingly random tracks and positions. - the stop is *always* preceeded by a sudden jump or skip one or two tracks ahead in the now playing display. slimserver's web-interface skips ahead too! - a purely mp3 playlist has been playing for some hours now with no stop. - i tried playing purely vorbis UN-synched on one player last night, to see if the problem is connected to the synch function or not. unfortunately, the SB stopped after 11 tracks sometime in the night. :-( the summary so far: 1. it seems only vorbis files decoded natively will cause the stops. 2. the now playing display *always jumps/skips one or two tracks ahead and freezes the progress bar. this applies to the web-interface and the SBs VFD. this happens when natively playing vorbis as well as transcoding to flac. 3. even though it also occurs when un-synched, it does not seem as often. 4. transcoding vorbis to flac/mp3 will not crash the SB anymore, but will still cause the now playing display to corrupt and has caused an utter and total slimserver crash. 5. playing native mp3 or flac does not seem to cause problems. my newest hypothesis: there is something wrong with the ogg container file handling on the slimserver, since eliminating the SB as a problem source through transcoding did not solve the problem. since the now playing display is controlled by slimserver, its corruption also points in that direction. the SB's DSP+DAC crashing may only be a symptom, not the root cause. i guess there is only one more thing for me to do: try SC7... :-( -- dcote dcote's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9701 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43298 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

However, now all I can do is go right to the song playing, right again only shows the song title information, and nothing else. I'm not sure I'm making myself clear... If this script could be passed to an as-yet unbuilt SBC plugin, then all it would have to do would be to pass the commands to the IR port, following the delays you have selected. The plugin could be fairly minimal, it would be just an extra menu item that would execute the script when selected. Easy for me to say, but hard for me to do as I have no programming experience with lua or perl. But I'm gathering that at some point, when the proper plug-in is written, I could (possibly) accomplish my goal of simple AVR control via IR from within the SBC. Correct? Yes, there's no reason why not. The SBC currently has a test applet that mimics the SB3 remote control and controls an SB2/3/Transporter just fine by IR. -- Mark Lanctot Ben Klass: I won't even eat a pre-7.0 meal. Re: [slim] DAC quality...SBR vs. USB-DAC vs. Apple TV
Unfortunately I don't have an SB3 or an SBR to compare with the ApplTV, I have a transporter. However, I also have an ApplTV, and my opinion of the analogue output is that it is extremely poor, with no dynamics or life in it at all. Consequently I use it via its optical out straight into my AV receiver, in which manner it performs quite well. However there is more to the difference between the Slim products and the AppleTV. In particular the AppleTV is aimed at an AV experience rather than a straight music experience, and as such is useless without being connected to a TV, and in addition it is set up to use a widescreen TV, not a 4:3 ratio screen. Basically the products are aimed at slightly different user needs, and you must decide what your needs are before you can decide which is the best product to met them. I personally think the AppleTV is good at what it does for its price-point, but I wouldn't want it in a music only system. -- bigfool1956 David Ayers Music is what counts, hifi just helps us enjoy it more bigfool1956's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13782 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43528 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Transporter fonts
Has anyone successfully modified the font files that are used by Transporter? I'd like to have a narrower font used for the second line of the Title/Artist/Album so I can fit more on that line. The three line display is too small. The next size up is the one that I'd like to change. It might be beyond the capabilities of the Transporter, but it would be cool if I could select one of two fonts in the title display. Re: [slim] The Play button
I am saying that the obvious intuitive function for the play button would be to add the song immediately after the current position in the playlist and begin to play it. Obvious because...? Intuitive because...? The iPod, which is probably the best known digital music access interface in the world, doesn't work that way. Nor does iTunes, the most used music manager in the world. My car stereo, my CD player, my tape deck, my turntable, etc. don't work that way, either. What might be obvious to you may very well confuse someone else. It's about point-of-view, previous experience, etc. Every device takes some level of learning, and with an installed base of customers that already use the current methodology, changing it would create grief for a lot of people. I'm not saying the way it works today is the right way but it is THE way it works. Working As Designed is really only a good response when the design makes sense. But, hey, y'all stick to your guns on this and let the Squeezebox controls continue to baffle and frustrate beginners. See above. Personally, when I became a part of this team and used my first Squeezebox, I made similar mistakes, primarily because I'd worked on the design of MP3 players, music managers, etc. in the past and made assumptions about the controls based on that work. After using the SB for a bit, I understood the decision behind the controls, and while I don't agree with 100% of them, find the remote/menus easy to deal with. From my personal point-of-view, I'd prefer to see Play/Pause function overloaded on a single button (because that how it's done on a huge number of devices), use ADD to put music in the Now Playing list, and have a Clear Now Playing list menu item. Of course, that will confuse some people who would go to an album or artist and press PLAY to play that music, instead of ADD to queue it up. You could say that PLAY would also add to Now Playing, but what happens if music is already playing? Does it pause or queue (or even both!)? It gets complicated, pretty quickly. Believe it or not, an awful lot of thought has gone into the current behaviors and they are a pretty balanced compromise that give you the functionality we want to deliver without too many modalities or buttons. -= Jim -- JimC well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that. -- BKlaas' college buddy JimC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43538 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

My total Mac experience is now about 30 hours elapsed time (with some spent sleeping), so I'm assuming user error of some type is the most likely problem. SlimServer/SqueezeCenter can't use OS X aliases... you need to create a symlink. There's no easy, GUI-based way to do this with 10.4 (I haven't upgraded to 10.5 yet so I don't know if they've added that functionality). I use a third-party application called Make Symlink (found 'here' (http://www.naratt.com/MakeSymlink.html)). It installs as a context menu (accessed via either a right-click or Ctrl-Click) and is easy to use. Install Make Symlink, right-click on the other music folders, and select Make Symlink from the context menu. That's pretty much all you need to do! Copy the symlink into the folder SqueezeCenter is set to use for music and rescan your library. You should be all set. -= Jim -- JimC well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that. -- BKlaas' college buddy JimC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43567 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] iTunes alternatives
Sorry for the late follow-up. I did eventually resolve my iTunes library rebuilds. I don't understand what was going on. It seems to have been issue with confused resource forks on the file server (an Infrant/Netgear ReadyNAS) on which I store my iTunes library. Some combination of carefully deleting all the hidden files containing the resource forks and temporarily connecting via SMB/CIFS instead of AppleShare did the trick. (I prefer AppleShare since it seems to more gracefully handle my machine going in and of sleep.) -- Lorrin Lorrin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3886 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39111 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You want it to interrupt the currently playing song as well? That wasn't obvious to me because the last guy who complained about this (two days ago or so) explicitly did not want this. The proposed IR map change doesn't do this either. Please take the time to read my posts if you are going to respond to them. I did, but I missed this point. That's probably because there are many ways people think are intuitive and whatever choice the software makes is going to require some adjustment for some users in the way every hardware or software package does. [slim] printout of the library
I would like to have a printout of my music library. Selecting the music of the next moment requires some inspiration, and this is supported by a simple print out stating all my tracks. One set of papers showing all the artists another giving all albums. Who knows a programme for such a printout that I can configure on my own. Doing this by MS-DOS features like dir c:\my music /s is not that attractive... -- rohmilch rohmilch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15544 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43569 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Missing accented files: iTunes and composed vs decomposed unicode
Files with accents in their names aren't showing up in my SlimServer library. This is an iTunes interaction problem. For example, I see this in the log file: 2008-02-16 22:23:51.7372 iTunes: file not found: /Volumes/media/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Wir Sind Helden/Soundso/04 Fu#776;r Nichts Garantieren.mp3 The corresponding entry in my iTunes Music Library.xml is this: keyLocation/keystringfile://localhost/Volumes/media/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Wir%20Sind%20Helden/Soundso/04%20Fu%CC%88r%20Nichts%20Garantieren.mp3/string Note the u%CC%88: that's a u-umlaut created with a u followed by a Combining Diaeresis (dialytika). If I browse to the file in Firefox, the URL I end up with this: file:///Volumes/media/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Wir%20Sind%20Helden/Soundso/04%20F%C3%BCr%20Nichts%20Garantieren.mp3 Note it uses %C3%BC to get the u-umlaut directly. It seems like somewhere along the way there's a failure to recognize that the decomposed Unicode path in the iTunes Music Library.xml is equivalent to the composed Unicode that is the name of the file on disk. My SlimServer setup involves three machines: a Mac that runs iTunes, a file server (Infrant/NetGear ReadyNAS) that stores the music library, and an Ubuntu machine that runs SlimServer. The Mac accesses the NAS via AppleShare and the Ubuntu machine accesses it via NFS. SlimServer Version: 6.5.4 - 12568 - Debian - EN - utf8 Perl Version: 5.8.8 i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi MySQL Version: 5.0.45-Debian_1ubuntu3.1 Thanks for any help... -Lorrin -- Lorrin Lorrin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3886 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43570 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The MusicInfoScreen plugin is well worth trying. Can't change the fonts You can. Re: [slim] Missing accented files: iTunes and composed vs decomposed unicode
hmm.. I should have been more specific. If I browse to the file in Firefox on the Ubuntu machine, the URL contains %C3%BC. But if I do on the Mac, the URL contains u%CC%88. This implies the NAS is exposing one file name to the Mac and another one to the Ubuntu machine. Seems like the fix needs to be there, rather than in SlimServer. Advice welcome... :-) -- Lorrin Lorrin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3886 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43570 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
