[slim] AlienBBC, mplayer, and Mac.

2005-08-29 Thread Daniel Cohen

I find the issue with AlienBBC and mplayer on the Mac very weird.

First, there are issues with getting versions of mplayer and the cook
codec that work together - some do, some don't.

Then it seems that when I do have mplayer working from the terminal,
with some versions AlienBBC works and with some it doesn't. I can't
see why, unless I ought to quite SlimServer between tries, which I
have done sometimes but not always.

I sometimes feel in the mood to experiment, but at other times it
just feels like a waste of energy given that I have a setup that
works fine for me.

I'm wondering if it is practical for the AlienBBC site to hold copies
of mplayer and the cook codec for downloading, or does it get you
into licensing issues. Given the whole range of versions available,
to have one place where there is a guaranteed working version would
be useful.

[slim] Re: T9 or similar smart text entry

2005-08-29 Thread hickinbottoms

I've finally produced a 6.2-compatible version of my lazy searching
patch for SlimServer, which I originally made available in January for
SlimServer 5.4.1 (and referenced by kdf for bug#386).

For those not familiar, it lets the user very quickly search using the
remote control without having to multi-tap to get at non-first
letters, or to wait/press right-arrow between letters on the same key.
Note this isn't predictive text as seen on mobile phones as there's
no suggestion of alternatives that are narrowed as the user is typing
(in my opinion - if anyone knows different then let me know and I'll
cease to make it available).

I hope it may be of some use. You can find it on my webpage here:
http://hickinbottom.demon.co.uk/SlimServer/lazy_searching.htm

Whilst not a complete solution for bug #386
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=386), I believe it's as
close as we might get with SlimServer.

I'm going to add a preference to allow the user to control whether this
functionality is enabled or not - I'll post an updated patch to the bug
when I've made some progress so subscribe to it for updates.

[slim] Re: SlimDevices losing out in the UK

2005-08-29 Thread audiofi

Steve,

I'm not sure if there have been many reviews of them both side by side,
I have the What HiFi here somewhere, but from what I can remember it
only had the Roku and Netgear in it, no Squeezebox.

Having owned both the Roku and Squeezebox though, the Squeezebox does
sound better, the Roku really needs an external DAC, the built in one
isn't brilliant.

Although the Roku links straight into itunes, when I had one it refused
to play AAC files (that may have been fixed now, I'm not sure).
The Squeezebox will quite happily link to your iTunes database file so
you can manage the files in iTunes and play them via SlimServer, I do
this and I'm sure a lot of other people do.

One other thing, the Squeezebox is on offer at Dabs at the moment which
makes it cheaper than the Roku

Hope this helps a little

I agree with that. I have a DAB radio too, but I hardly ever use it
because it's stand-alone and not plummed into the hifi. Being able to
listen to more regular and digital radio stations would be great. I
have managed to find Virgin in one of the radio index's though. :) It
sounds quite backward to want to listen to regular FM and digital
radio on the Squeeze but there you have it.

Haven't tried Alien but read about it, and it scared me. And I've been
using Unix/linux since 1996

I do think Slim need more PR/reviews in the UK though. I got mine
through broadbandstuff.co.uk and am very glad I did!

I'm ripping to FLAC using EAC.

I've only just started, and there are already a couple of albums where

Is there a way to change this info after ripping?

sounds like you need to edit the tag information that is encoded within
your FLAC files.

In which case you need a tag editor: there are many, but here is one
commonly used (and free!).

http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

Download, install, change any tag info you like. You may need to tell
slimserver to wipe its cache to make it re-read the info.

For people asking why let's just say that Slim has some serious
competition on their hands from Sonus, Roku and others and staying
complacent is not going to get them where they need to be.

I would predict that SB3 has more integration with subscription
services and possibly an all new remote control design.

It makes absolutely no sense for it to be a budget player. It could
be so redesigned that it requires new software and is not compatible
with SB1 and SB2 (although that's unlikely they might have to break
with the current software to support an all new architecture).

[slim] Small footprint receiver?

This is not strictly a Slim Devices query, but someone may have some

many small systems at Best Buy for example, but they all seem to

small. An in wall receiver would be ideal. Anyone have any

formatting be a minor concern with how my library is structured.
I am not strictly consistant, but I usually renumber the tracks and
consider a two or three CD album to be one big one.

OTOH, I often split classical albums apart, because they often
have works by two composers and I often don't like the pairings.
So I'll have separate albums for the Beethoven part and

Yep, that's what I'm going for with compilation albums. I'm not sure
what the server setting does, but if I follow the names on the
database, the disks are treated as individual albums, with a disk
number attached - which is a bit pony. I've just used that editor to

[slim] Browse Playlists Changed?

2005-08-29 Thread Chip Hart

Before I file a bug, I thought I'd check here for something
stupid I've missed.

I've created a significant hierarchy of playlists based on the
source (for example, a dir-tree of Magnatune playlists sorted by
genre). Previous to my latest upgrades, when I would Browse
the Playlists, it would allow me to follow the directory tree,
which is what I wanted.

Now, it seems, every m3u file in the entire playlist directory
chain is being listed together. So, by illutration, Browse
Playlists used to look like this:

  Browse ---
 magna ambient Rapoon.m3u*
 npr blues
 radio1234 metal
 whatever

Now, I just get ALL of the m3us in each of the subdirs above,
sorted by alpha. One long, hard to nav list.

Have I missed some server setting?

This is with the latest 6.2 nightly and started, by my notice,
with one of the nightlies in the last few weeks.

Thanks.

maybe a 650 or 700. The 500 can now be had for about $85.00; the MX-700 for
about double that. www.bluedo.com will extend the warranty to two years on
the 500. It's highly customizable, and has been able to control everything
I've thrown at it. Plus I'm comfortable with it, and can probably clone my
existing one to a new one.

Give us some details of your system and setup, perhaps in the forum

There are several places where things can go wrong. I have it working
fine on my Mac, but there are several different versions of mplayer

It would require a total change to the squeezebox I think.

At present all the UI, file management etc. is done on the server PC.

Not saying impossible or course, I guess the processor in the

[slim] I'm going to open the Realslim can of worms again...

2005-08-29 Thread Aaron Zinck
I've been trying to set up a new (new to me...old in actuality--it was
given to me by a friend) server these past couple of days but have had fits
getting the Realslim plugin to work. There have been a number of problems
(I've always had a number of problems initially configuring realslim), but
with some fiddling I seem to be able to get everything to work except that
the Rhapsody portion of the plugin (hookanddie.exe) doesn't hook into the
Rhapsody application.

While I can't get this to work on my new server, in the past I've managed
to get the setup working on various computers with Win2k SP4 as well as
WinXP SP1. I've never managed to get it working on WinXP SP2 (if anyone out
there has had success with that I'd love to hear about it!). My new setup
follows:

Duron 650
384 MB RAM
integrated NIC
integrated sound
WinXP SP1
Rhapsody v. 2.1

I'm logging in under an account with administrative privileges that's not
called administrator.

and probably not pertinent but I'll list it anyhow:
Squeezebox 1 wired with character-based display

I've tried the setup with both slimserver 5.4 (Dec. 3rd '04 nightly--old, I
know, but it's the version I've had success with on other machines) with
Realslim 0.6 as well as slimserver 6.1 (the latest release version) with the
modified Realslim plugin.pm and altered upnp common.pm file as specified by
gsamsa in this thread (btw, thanks, gsamsa, for doing some work on
Realslim...it's greatly appreciated):
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=14253highlight=realslim

Does anyone know if the hook into the Rhapsody app is dependent upon the
sound card in any way? Or perhaps I need to do something with the ports on
this machine...I have no firewalls running of any sort. I'll also mention
that I *do* have UPNP turned on in the rhapsody app. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. This machine has a totally fresh install of XP,
updated to SP1 with nothing on it but rhapsody, realslim, and slimserver. I
have no other 3rd-party plugins installed into slimserver and have only a
handful of mp3 files in a test music directory.

On Topic Post:

I've just finished reading this months T3 magazine and there were
approximately 4 references to the Roku, either as direct editorial,
reviews or advertisments.

Total references for the SB2: Zero.

Even the MP101 got a write up. And in a comment giving examples of
available streaming kit just about every available device got a mention
EXCEPT for the SB2 - one almost gets the impression it's a conspiracy!

The SB2 definately needs it's profile raised in the UK, but it's likely
the same could be said for the rest of Europe too. This is definately
going to be a problem long term for Slim Devices but is this something
their distributors should be sorting out, or Slim? Deep pockets will be
needed to fund any in-your-face advertising, so perhaps a review on
theregister.com would help raise the profile globally without costing
too much?

Word of mouth sales will only work so well - trust me, I'm a UK TiVo
owner! Eventually maintsteam marketing is required to sustain the
product, and in this regard SB2 is an also ran. :(

[slim] Re: Universal (All-for-one) remote controls?

2005-08-29 Thread mkozlows

The MX-500 is, as others here have said, an excellent remote. The hard
buttons are laid out and labelled appropriately for everything from a
cable box with PVR capability to a DVD player to a TV to a Squeezebox;
and the controls that don't naturally map to a hard-labelled button can
go nicely in the custom button area on top.

Plus, macros, which are great at allowing me to easily switch sources
in my otherwise unwieldly setup (which might normally require three
devices to change inputs). Plus, it's easy to set up, being sensibly
pre-programmed for a variety of devices and with fairly intuitive menus
(and an excellent manual) for doing learning, label editing, and macros.
Plus, it's got a nice backlight. Plus, it's an attractive unit with
good feel (the unit itself has the same powder-black finish as the
black Squeezebox; the buttons are a glossy hard finish that depress
satisfyingly).

It's really an excellent remote, and it seems to be intermittently
possible to find it for under $100, which is a steal.

Well it has speakers but it is beautifully minimalist, sounds great,

Re: [slim] Slimserver Suddenly Stops

dos propt because I use iTunes Updater. Here is my readout from the
Log.txt with 10,000 Maniacs playing first (and playing fine)...

Could you try running this with the DOS prompt window set to stay open?
That, or open the command prompt from the start menu and run the
server from command line:

cd \program files\slimserver\server
slim.exe

The crash message is probably not a slimserver debug message, so is
being spit out just as the dos window closes on you.

I don't know why I didn't think of this originally but it occurs to me that
I should have posted this in the 3rd party plug-ins forum. Sorry about that
folks! I'll move it there now...

seems to me like slim devices has always liked the niche market instead
of the mass market. frankly i think we slim customers have benefited
from them NOT pandering to the pay services. mass market consumers are
in for a RUDE awakening when they finally realize they did not actually
purchase that song from itunes but where just renting it. drm is doomed
to fail because the techies will always be able to crack it and joe
sixpack will only be frustrated when trying to merge music from two or
more different services or trying to reload/restore their music
collection after a major crash.

[slim] Soft Squeeze Stops

2005-08-29 Thread NickM

I run SlimServer and SoftSqueeze on one PC. I use another PC to control
SoftQueeze via the web interface.

After opening the web interface and selecting tracks, the music stops
playing after 10 to 30 seconds. This happens with all tracks. If I
click Stop then Play, playback resumes OK with no more stops, even with
the web interface remaining open.

Can anyone else replicate the problem? Any suggestions most welcomed.
I am using SlimServer Version: 6.1.1 - 3774 - Windows 2000 - EN -
cp1252.

If you're comfortable, update to the 6.2beta version. With a couple of
glitches not affecting playback, it should work fine for you.

Amazing how many RP listeners there are on this list :-) It's clearly my
favourite station I've found so far. And they made me detect quite some
good, new (to me) music.

It's excellent listening for anyone over 24 years old (precious little
DJ noise other than the occasional site ident and no ads means
practically 100% good music!)

That's right! So much good music and almost no noise.

and RP works great with Squeeze Network as
a manual addition. :)

Don't have to add it manually. You should find it browsing the Shoutcast
streams (that's where I found it).

2005-08-29 Thread Michael Herger

The SB2 definately needs it's profile raised in the UK, but it's likely
the same could be said for the rest of Europe too. This is definately

I just had some mail exchange with a french guy who asked me where to buy
it in France - me being Swiss German :-). He told me that one of the
distributors stopped selling them. I see this here in Switzerland, too.
As SliMP3, SB Cie. have been tested/mentioned in the german press, it's
known in the german part of Switzerland (but still something rather
exclusif). But I know of one single person here in the french part who
knows it (besides me, obviously). And I think he's American/British.
France seems to need some development, too...

I'm attaching a modified version of HookAndDie.exe. I made some comments
