method to extract album art (in automatic manner, obiouvsly) or You
think in a next version of ACC this will be a feature?

 Ciao, Riccardo

It is possible to extract any tag data including album covers from a
mp3 file. So what I mean to say is that I cn change ACC to get the art
from the file and make an option if this is prefered or not. To do so I
need a COM/ActiveX object but haven't been able to find one yet. I'll
post a question about this in the developers forum. If I find one, then
yes this will be a future option else I must disappoint you.

I do think though that the majority uses the cover.jpg or folder.jpg
files.

Re: [slim] Wireless - yes, Homeplug - No

2008-01-15 Thread willyhoops

I use ethernet cable for one squeezebox and homeplug for all the rest of
my transporters and squeezeboxes (five in all). It has proved much more
reliable than wireless and stopped my wirless commected laptops having
dropout issues as well. Uing the software netstumber I can see dozens
of wireless networks in my area which of course must be my problem.

I would highly reccomend homeplug even though setting up the network
key to stop neighbours getting into your network is pretty ugly with my
netgear devices.

I guess the next generation of routers will have homeplug all built in
and i would love to see this in slimserver devices as well.

Well, prices here (Switzerland) aren't any better than in the EU, and our

Are you really using a hub? I thought they were quickly going out of

The 'normal' setup (IMHO) would be something like what I have:

internet - router - switch - sb3
 - server (slimserver)
 - pc

In fact I have multiple switches and a wireless accesspoint, all
connected to the 'main' switch, but the principle remains the same.

where and what is your server?

Yes, the wireles was switched off on the laptop (I just used it to
check connection to the internet using Homeplugs)

The SB3 gets the IP adress automatically, no problem. It then says

Re: [slim] can't download waveinput plugin

2008-01-15 Thread bpa

Unless you are very sure of your Windows audio subsystem, I think to use
wavinput as your main input for a Transporter may be a waste of money
as Windows sometimes resamples audio up to 48kHz as well as other
processing before wavinput will get it. Wavinput may have to request
that the stream is resampled again to 44.1kHz.

There is a good chance the audio stream being fed to Transported is
*unlikely* to be an unadulterated decode into WAV of your audio files.
When you use Slimserver/Squeezecenter your audio files will be decoded
by the Transport or transcoded by apps into a format suitable for the
Transporter. No other processing will be performed.

Why would you want to?

With the SB3 the answer is yes, simply press and hold left to get back
to network setup, skip everything but the select music source step
and specify a different server/IP. However with the SBR you might have
to go through setup again using the Controller.

Thinking about this - it might be! In my situation, I have a static IP
network. If I get an SBR and turn it on, how can I tell it what its IP
address will be? It can't get on the network. Chicken-and-egg?

DHCP makes things a little easier but as many posts on this forum show,

[slim] Release 7.0 advantages? and when?

2008-01-15 Thread juniper

I read in this forum at the start of Dec that. the target date for an
official 7.0 release was to be 5th Jan. That has come and gone.

a)Is anybody able to explain in a nutshell the selling points of 7.0
over 6.5.4 please?
b) When is the formal release now likely to be available to ordinary
non techie users like my goodself?
c) If still some time off - is there any point in downloading 7.0 beta
- following on from a) and b).

Thanks in anticipation

Re: [slim] can't download waveinput plugin

2008-01-15 Thread vrasenas

Thanks BPA for your insight. I was afraid it was going to be something
pretty technical. I am using a Thinkpad Z60t as the server and it is
optimized for media. Although I don't know that much about laptop sound
cards this is a high definition (Analog Devices, SoundMAX Integrated
Digital HD Audio) card. This probably means it does sample at a higher
rate.
This is what I got off of the Analog Devices website for spec.'s
Professional 20-bit DACs with 100dB SNR*
Up to 48kHz sampling rate
Microsoft® DirectSound™
Dolby Digital pass-through
5.1 playback over two speakers via Virtual Theater Surround™ or over 6
speakers via systems with the AD1980 CODEC (DVD software must support
5.1 decoding)

Re: [slim] Problem running Slimserver on PC with VPN client software

2008-01-15 Thread Mario

Hi, I've the same problem: the PC running SC7 sometimes connects through
Cisco VPN client; since then the SB3 cannot link to SC until the VPN
client disconnects.

I've opened the slimserver.pref but there is no httpport statement.
Have I to add it ?

BTW, in the network preferences I already use 9001 as port number of
web server (I access SC on http://10.0.0.100:9001)... Is it a different
param from httpport ?

The official change log is here:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/*checkout*/trunk/server/Changelog7.html?content-type=text/html

One thing that currently isn't mentioned in the change log is that 7.0
is required if you like to use the newly announced SqueezeBox
Duet/Receiver/Controller hardware.

Different users will focus on different things in the changelog, so it
is hard to tell exactly which ones that will make a difference to you.

Some highlights:
- Improved integration with SqueezeNetwork
- Direct support for several music services such as MP3Tunes, Pandora
and Rhapsody
- New default skin for web interface (this makes a big difference if
you use the web interface)
- Support for new hardware SqueezeBox Duet/Receiver/Controller
- Improved stability/robustness
juniper;258901 Wrote:

 b) When is the formal release now likely to be available to ordinary

It's required for the new hardware which I think should be available in
the stores during January. So I would guess it will be officially
released within the next 2 weeks. But this is just a guess, I have no
other indication of the release date.

juniper;258901 Wrote:

It's currently pretty stable, so if you don't have any problem to
upgrade again when the final version is released, I would recommend you
to try it.

[slim] MusicIP in New SC7 Default Skin?

2008-01-15 Thread Bradley

I'm waiting for the official release, but was wondering if there is
MusicIP capability in the New SC7 Default Skin?

Currently in SS I use the Fishbone skin for this. Thought by now,
folks would have integrated it into SC7.

Thanks.

A PC application doesn't have to communicate over IP. It can use
ethernet broadcasts to discover SB devices and configure them over raw

Alternatively an SBR could have a default IP address and netmask, the

[slim] DroboShare and SlimServer

2008-01-15 Thread cak

The Drobo data robot was very attractive when it was announced, but a
non-starter for me because I need a NAS. What I really want is a NAS
that can run slimserver directly and not choke when I'm using the
web-based controller (unlike my NSLU2).

They just announced the DroboShare, which is a gigEther connected
SMB-only front end to a Drobo. It's a closed box, and won't run
applications other than Drobo.

I like the Drobo RAID technology better than Infrant's, but I would
need to come up with a slimserver box, preferably something that
doesn't have rotating parts. I'm not sure that the WRT54 family has
what it takes to run an SMB client and SlimServer and the web front end
... they're limited in both RAM and horsepower.

Any words of wisdom out there? I know the Drobo is new, but perhaps
you've already run slimserver on a WRT box or something similar? Which
one?

Thanks.

No, because your local files have DRM. But as I said you have access to

There is no reason to use your local files, they are the same quality.

I am also having this problem with 6.5.4 on WHS (Tranquil T7).

I never had this problem with 6.5.1 on XP home (my laptop), so I may
try 6.5.1 on WHS.

Currently it's wired via router to the WHS, and no IP conflicts, power
cable is in solidly, output from the SB3 is via glass optical to a DAC
(ie no interference from the DAC can make it back).

I'm very confused now. By personal collection do you mean CDs
ripped to one's hard drive (or DRM-free MP3s bought from Amazon or
whatever), not downloaded from Rhapsody, or something else?

Because what I'd want to do is listen to my own personal music and also
Rhapsody music without switching back and forth between servers in an
awkward fashion, and it doesn't sound like that's possible right now.

Re: [slim] can't download waveinput plugin

2008-01-15 Thread bpa

That seems to be a good spec. It's been a while since I looked at the
source of the wav2input application but it hooks into the Windows sound
system and asks Windows for a copy of the sound stream that will be
output to systems that sends sounds to the speakers.

I'm not sure what happens with a high spec output systems - perhaps
that is part of the problem.

The wav2input was intended as a workaround for internet sources which
could not be handled by Slimserver (e.g. flashaudio streams) and in
general these streamed source would not be high quality. Use wav2input
as your main audio source probably does not do justic to Transporter or
your audio files.

I finally had some time to do some fixing and posted the RC2 release on

Changes in RC2:
FIXEDAlbum covers not correctly displayed when path contains
special characters
FIXEDWhen a starting or compilation folder is selected and
Start was pressed the folders fields reversed to the previous setting
but were executed correctly
FIXEDAlbum covers were not displayed in firefox
CHANGED Calibri font in Artist and Album header to Tahoma as
Calibri is only default installed on Windows Vista OS which caused a
font replacement to Times New Roman when Calibri was missing

Still working on some other issues with Schatzy which may result in a
fix later this week (hopefully).

The question has come up before, and there are some NAS's that have
sufficient access and power to run Slimserver, though usually with some
 performance limits.

It goes back to having a machine with enough horsepower to run a pretty
complex and large database (cross indexing albums, artists, composers,
genres, years, etc...) without spending a ton of money... You would
have to either massively increase the CPU power of the player or the
NAS box.. spending money on the player is bad for people who either
don't need that functionality, or who have more than one player. (Ie,
if you have 2 players, it would be more cost effective to spend the
money on a server with more oomph than to increase the cost of each
 player.)

If you can deal with Linux (or have geek friends you can bribe with
pizza and beer) it isn't hard to put together a headless Linux box you
can hide in the garage or closet and use that as a server. A sort of
do-it-yourself NAS box. As you get addicted to the music, it starts to
 pay for itself in enjoyment.

(Gah, I played with SC7's new and improved syncing this weekend... and
especially with songs with just a tad of reverb for 'depth' it was
impressive to hear the echo from my bedroom player in the living
room... now I want a player for the bathroom, the spare room, the
office... I am glad I don't have to pay for the server horsepower on
 each device.)

I have just placed an order on a QNAP Turbostation 209 Pro and 2 500 GB
HD which I plan to hook up in a raid 1 configuration. I hope it will be
able to do the job. At least it will be able to host all my CD's riped
in FLAC. Looking forward to a hack to do the job on the server stuff.

Sorry, your personal collection of Rhapsody music is available to you

The stuff you ripped yourself is available in SqueezeCenter.

With SqueezeCenter 7 you don't have to switch between servers. It's all
available from SqueezeCenter's web interface or with the Squeezebox

No migration wizard as yet... I doubt very much if there will be one as
the plugin/preferences architecture is so different. As far as I know
it's not been mentioned anyway. The hard working Michael Herger is the
chap who'll know for sure. At the moment you need to *completely*
uninstall 6.*.* and all plugins/preferences etc and then install 7 and
all the upgraded plugins.

I thing not mentioned that 7 is good for is synchronisation. It doesn't
drift anymore still get the track gaps in mix albums tho... which
is a bummer.

The web gui layout etc is a lot cleaner and more logical than previous
versions. It's a great step up from 6.

Re: [slim] Rumor: Microsoft to buy Logitech?!

2008-01-15 Thread matthijskoopmans

Folks,

What are we discussing here? I have seen no reference in the major
media other than the article linked in the beginning of this thread.
When Microsoft (or any corporate for that matter) is interested to
acquire another company, that does not mean that it actually happens.
As it is with these things, neither Microsoft nor Logitech can confirm
or deny such acquisition talks. Even a denial is seen as a
confirmation. Before we go in the cynical doom and gloom scenarios,
let's wait until something actually happens.

I remember clearly the tenure around the Logitech acquisition of Slim
Devices. Now all that doom and gloom did not materialise, did it? We
did get a nice SqueezeBox Duet out of it, and hopefully we will have
better local warranty support (this is one thing that has disappointed
me so far).

Also, a Microsoft acquisition does not necessarily mean death to open
source, or platform independence (although it is not hard to imagine, I
suggest waiting for the original statement around that). As for a brand
name: I don't care if it is Slim Devices, Logitech, Microsoft, Alpha
Monkey, or whatever. As long as the product and the service surrounding
it add value to me.

Just my two cents.

Cheers

Matt

Huh? Trivial? The firmware seems to me is pretty hard to write if you
don't know intimate details about the hardware. A working slimserver
would only be working for me if it is able to serve my SqueezeBox.

But I do agree that this is pure speculation. Mostly we just need to

Besides using ASIO or KS to pass stream directly to digital out, there
is one more important setting people often missed. Set the wave input
and mixer output to 100%. Even KS won't bypass volume control (it just
prevented the 44/48kHz conversion). Any volume adjustment will alter
the DTS waveform and not regonised by receiver.

As for a migration wizard: no there's no such thing. Plugins will have to
be updated. You best check with its author. Many of the most favorite
plugins should be available for SC7 by now. Though many still wear some
beta in their name. Mine do, just because SC7 is still beta too. But I'd

Re: [slim] MusicIP in New SC7 Default Skin?

2008-01-15 Thread Siduhe

What OS and what version of MusicIP are you running? Also, do you have
the latest nightly release of SC7?

I had a few problems when I initially upgraded to SC7. I think this
was because I run MIP headless. It was resolved by stopping
Slimserver, stopping my MIP service, restarting my MIP service, then
restarting Slimserver and then doing a full clear and rescan (after
setting up MIP in the Slimserver settings) and it has worked fine ever
since, even on reboots (although I don't do many of those).

If you are having problems with the start up order, and runing XP have
a look at 'Spicefly' (http://spicefly.com/content/view/32/32/) which
has a neat little shortcut to get these two running the same way.

I know that Vista/SC7/MIP combination has caused a few problems for
some people - although I think these have been resolved for some by
swapping MIP to a headless install.

[slim] iTunes Album Art in SqueezeCenter

Unfortunately i have the same problem that others have experienced that
the iTunes album art is not held in the same directory as the tracks and

Is there a fix that forces SqueezeCenter to look at my iTunes album art

If Google doens't know of any sid-to-wav conversion tools for Windows,
your best bet might be to find a friendly linux user who would be

You linked to a post which allows SlimServer to perform sid-to-wav

If you're using a Mac, just run the AppleScript in this blog:

http://nslog.com/2006/09/24/itunes_artwork_in_id3

It will automatically perform a process of embedding the artwork right
into its respective track as I originally documented here:

http://twistedmelon.com/blog/sep2006.html

Slimcenter (or any version of Slimserver) will then see the artwork
because it will appear where it belongs, inside each track.

Well, since the SBR will need the SBC for setup (at least for now) this
setup is not an option for me. Could someone recommend a solution that
would allow me to keep the hardware in a locked closet and allow
control from 2 seperate PC's on a wired network. I would be streaming
from the internet 95% of the time.

I'm trying to create a background music source for my office that will
allow me to set and forget.

Re: [slim] AppleTV and SlimServer/SqueezeCenter

2008-01-15 Thread willyhoops

Wow yea I was just watching that AppleTV advert over at apple.com.
Amazing that for the less that the price of the new duet plus remote
you get the whole 160Gb apple tv system. It looks really really strong.
Pro audio people will want multiple audio only units with no dependence
on a tv set, but for the mass market it's the way to go. And with the
tv as your interface all the hassles of small screen displays are gone.
I am blown away - I think I have seen the future and I am bit gutted
that it's apple.

Re: [slim] SB Receiver without controller?

2008-01-15 Thread mvalera

I don't understand... get a Duet, it's $100 more than a Squeezebox and
you get a 802.11 controller.

Then add additional receivers for $149.

Look around, but you'll be unlikely to find a better/easier/cheaper
solution.

I've updated to 6.5.4 without a hitch, so I'll keep an eye on things.

Is it just me or is the sound a bit more detailed with 6.5.4 and the
firmware upgrade? (Or am I risking opening a can of worms here?!)

He doesn't want a controller. Many existing users prefer to control
their Squeezeboxes with laptops, PCs, PDAs, Nokia Nseries, iPhones,
iPod Touches, etc. If you're going to place the SB in a closet, the
$150 SBR makes more sense than a $300 SB3. The current setup
limitation, though, would keep them from buying any SBRs. I assume it
will be addressed once the product has been released.

I just ran release candidate 2 and it worked for me albiet with no
background on the window and something I hadn't noticed before. ACC
tells me I have 351 Albums and SC 7 tells me I have 348. Also, I wonder
why ACC accesses the internet.

Overall, I happy with what I have.

Thanks again,

Storage aside, what's a minimal reasonable config for running

thinking I'd buy a mini-ITX box to do that job.

I have a small 'Shuttle' based linux box that is a Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU
2.40GHz with 256Meg of RAM.

As well as running Slimserver (503 albums with 7872 songs by 192 artists) it
also runs my firewall, internet gateway, POP3, SMTP, web proxy, SMB file
sharing and countless other services.

It's probably not the snappiest solution, but it's very usable.

I would expect that pretty much the cheapest PC you could buy these days
would be more than capable of running Slimserver under Linux. Adding more
RAM would likely be the most obvious improvement.

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator for SlimServer

2008-01-15 Thread schatzy

tomanaco,

I opened the ACC.cgf file in note padIt looks something like this

SF|I:\MP3\J\Jackson, Michael\(1979) Off The Wall
G2E|
CF|

Remove from the first line
I:\MP3\J\Jackson, Michael\(1979) Off The Wall

The file should then look like

SF|
G2E|
CF|

Save this and try running ACC-RC2.

If the path that we removed does not exist on your computer then this
will probably not work as ACC is looking for it and can not find it.

Let me know if that fixes it.

Re: [slim] SB Receiver without controller?

2008-01-15 Thread paltomare

Thanks Jim, that is what I was trying to say but you said it better than
I could. I find it much easier to control my old SB1 at home with my
laptop. In my office situation I want the SB locked in our server cab
to prevent unauthorized use, and allow me to control it from my office.
I guess the SB3 would do this, I was just hoping the cheaper SBR would
as well.
